Loxley rose in stiff increments, clambering off him and wrapping the scarf back around his neck. Thorncress followed him up, not quite meeting his eye. Hesitantly, Loxley took his hand. "I love you, and I would miss you, if you went. I need you to know that."
Thorncress made a quiet sound like a wounded animal. "I cannot promise what will happen come morning," he said, his throat working furiously, "but I will not leave you tonight. Wherever the hounds went, I won't follow. You have my word." Raising one hand, he traced the trail of tears from Loxley's eye to the line of his jaw. "Don't cry for me. Please."
"I will cry for you," Loxley threatened, though he managed a shaky smile. "I'll cry for you every night and every day until you realize the depth of my feelings for you."

I recently saw the 2010 Robin Hood movie again. And I had some thoughts.
[And they were thoughts other than “Oh thank goodness I’m not watching the 2018 one.]
Alright obligatory aside when talking about this movie: we have to talk about Nottingham. There was a time when in every discussion of the movie, Nottingham would come up, or someone in the comments would say that he or she wished we got to see Nottingham instead of this movie.
The story goes like this: working its way through development hell was a script titled “Nottingham” which was a different take on the Robin Hood story from the point of view of the Sheriff of Nottingham, the traditional antagonist of the stories. The main gist of it was that it was CSI: Medieval England, with the Sheriff investigating a series of murders and trying to catch the killer. I’ve seen conflicting stories over how this would have gone down–if Robin Hood was going to be the killer, or be framed for the murders. But either way, it would be a reversal of the usual format, with the Sheriff as the hero, and Robin Hood as being an antagonistic force.
When Ridley Scott signed on to do a Robin Hood movie, he discarded all of that to make this movie. Naturally, a lot of people got upset about it. And that’s fair, but it’s been over a decade since this movie came out, so I’ve kind of stopped caring about Nottingham in that time. Good movies don’t get made sometimes. It happens. We move on with our lives. So please, please don’t make the “I wish this had been Nottingham instead!” comment. I don’t care. Get over it.
So! Moving on!
Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood tells the story of Robin Longstride, an English archer fighting with Richard’s army on the way back home from the Crusades. When King Richard dies in battle, Robin and his companions make it back to England before the rest of the army by pretending to be knights–but Robin ends up involved in a quest of his own, and the group soon get wrapped up in a plot by the King of France to take England from the weak King John.
Alright this movie has too much going on, because it’s trying to be both a Robin Hood movie and a historical epic concerning real events. I don’t mind it that much–I like tying the Robin Hood legend to real-life occurrences, but it gets to a truly absurd amount of content. Not only is this an origin story for the outlaw and his Merry Men, it covers the death of King Richard I, Marion’s story, an invasion attempt by France, Robin’s own traumatic childhood, and the precursor to the Magna Carta all in one story. I’m not even against the movie trying this, but there’s not enough time here to properly address them all. Some storylines get clearly shafted (that’s not meant to be an arrow pune), like the orphans in the woods of Nottingham suddenly helping our heroes at the end of the story when they were just being a nuisance up until that point. Or the crazy coincidence that Robin’s dad just happens to have been Locksley’s comrade in making a document protecting people’s rights.
I get excited about including history in historical fiction like this! Usually Robin Hood only has the monarchs, and vague references to the Crusades, and that’s it. Having Eleanor of Aquitaine and William Marshal as actual characters is a nice touch, at least in my eyes. But including all of these elements means we take time away from some parts that NEED to be developed more. Perhaps the Director’s Cut is better in this regard?
The character development that we do get is nice though. I remember thinking that Robin and Marion’s setup in this movie is unusual for a retelling, and rewatching it still is, but it also makes a really interesting dynamic that I like. I’m sure fans of “fake marriage” types of stories would eat this up.
And Marion is a fascinating character! She’s been running her household for years waiting for her husband Sir Loxley to return, a man she doesn’t really know that well but is relying on to make this all okay, and the scene in which she finds out that he’s not coming is…. Really good. It’s a very good bit of Cate Blanchett showing off how to display strong emotions without speaking.
There is this weird bit of camerawork before it though in which it zooms in on her face, and that’s not necessary. We get it. There are a couple of other bits like this throughout the film that I didn’t get, but overall camerawork is pretty good.
Another thing that I think I really appreciate about this movie is that it doesn’t worship King Richard of England. Many adaptations of the Robin Hood stories idealize that the problems of England are just that this one douchebag, John, is in charge, and if Richard came back then it’d all be swell. This movie has scenes in which John points out that part of the reason his tax policies are in place are because Richard bankrupted the country for his wars (which everyone loved him for), and he’s RIGHT. Robin calls out Richard to his face for the cruelty of the Massacre in Acre (real thing that happened), though he’s put in stocks for it.
The Sheriff was wasted in this movie though. Matthew McFayden does good with what he has, but what he has isn’t that much.
But what’s really nice is that the final duel is settled with archery. I’d have preferred more archery in the movie, but Robin does make some good shots–unlike some movies, where he just does a couple for drama, and most of the deciding battles are concluded with a sword fight. This is Robin Hood guys! Make sure it ends with an arrow!
I do not know if this movie was really intended for sequels. Everyone acts like it is, and Russell Crowe was ready to do it, and there are enough dangling threads to do so. But I also see this as an origin story for a movie for a story you already know the main beats of. It didn’t get a sequel, but you know the gist of what happens next anyway, so it’s not too big of a problem. I am curious to know how that would have gone, but it’s not exactly a heartbreak.
I liked this movie. I know a lot of people hated it when it came out, but I thought it was fine. It hits a nice spot for me, being a fun historical fiction piece that actually uses the historical setting to tell the story rather than as slight flavoring like a lot of Robin Hood stories. But it isn’t a truly great movie because it doesn’t have time to deal with every element that it introduces.

Robin Hood (Ridley Scott, 2010) Cast: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Max von Sydow, Oscar Isaac, William Hurt, Mark Strong, Danny Huston, Eileen Atkins, Mark Addy, Matthew Macfadyen, Kevin Durand, Scott Grimes, Alan Doyle, Douglas Hodge, Léa Seydoux. Screenplay: Brian Helgeland, Ethan Reiff, Cyrus Voris. Cinematography: John Mathieson. Production design: Arthur Max. Film editing: Pietro Scalia. Music: Marc Streitenfeld. Did the world really need another Robin Hood movie? From the lack of interest at the box office, it would seem not. At least Ridley Scott and screenwriter Brian Helgeland tried to give us something slightly different: a prequel, in which Robin finds his identity and mission and only at the very end goes off into Sherwood Forest with his Merry Men, presumably to rob from the rich and give to the poor. Unfortunately, the prequel doesn't give us much that's new or revealing about the characters: The villains, King John (Oscar Isaac) and the Sheriff of Nottingham (Matthew Macfadyen), remain the same, with an additional twist that they're being duped by another villain named Godfrey (Mark Strong), a supporter of the French King Philip, who is plotting an invasion now that the English army is still straggling back from the Crusades. Robin is a soldier of fortune named Robin Longstride, who has been to the Crusades and is making it back with the crown of the fallen Richard the Lionheart (Danny Huston) as well as a sword he promised the dying Sir Robert Loxley (Douglas Hodge) he would return to his father, Sir Walter (Max von Sydow) in Nottingham.  When he does, Robin meets Marian, no longer a maid but the widow of Sir Robert. On the way, he has gathered a retinue comprising Little John (Kevin Durand), Will Scarlet (Scott Grimes), and Allan A'Dayle (Alan Doyle), and in Nottingham he will add Friar Tuck (Mark Addy) to the not terribly merry company. They'll take part in repelling the French invasion, which Scott makes into a kind of small scale D-Day, to the extent of borrowing unabashedly from Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (1998), including some landing craft whose historical existence has been questioned (along with much else of the movie's history). Robin and his fellow soldiers, including Marian, who arrives disguised in chain mail, save the day, but their hopes for a new charter of rights that has been promised them by King John are dashed when he proclaims Robin an outlaw. So everything seems to be set up for a sequel that will culminate at Runnymede and the signing of Magna Carta, but the film's flop at the box office put paid to that. Robin Hood certainly has some good performances, which you might expect from its cast packed with Oscar-winners and -contenders, but it feels routine and a little tired. It also resorts to filming much of the action with the now too common "gloomycam," in which fight scenes always seem to be taking place at night, so you can't tell who's killing whom.

ROY G BIV Tag
Ehy @avrablake! Thanks for the tag!
Rules: find the seven colors of the rainbow in your wips
(This is from H00D, my cyberpunk Robin Hood retelling.)
RED
He grunted, and his fingertips descended on the keyboard. Worth it. All he needed to do was change a number. From two to three. Inspector William Brewer modified and changed the file. In the morning, somebody else would’ve reopened it, and nobody would’ve noticed the last edit. With the click of the red X at the top of the document, Robert Loxley died for the world.
ORANGE
The bike took the side alley with a screech, leaving a black trail on the asphalt. The rider disappeared from under the street lights. After a few seconds, the orange glow of the suburbs painted red and blue with the lights from the police hoverbikes. The two armored vehicles, white in the shadows, glided half a meter from the ground, their skirts brushing the dirt as the two cops bent sideways to enter the alley.
YELLOW
She held him tightly and walked backwards, pulling him along. His heels left shallow furrows in the grass, and his head lolled with every movement, but they eventually reached the black door behind the main building. Mathilda, drenched in sweat, avoided the garbage bags stored there and fumbled to keep Guy up and hit the button on the yellow wall at the same time. “Come on… come on!” She begged. Her arms trembled, and she had her hair everywhere--in her mouth, in her eyes and ears. Guy’s eyes were half closed and rolled back in his head, and she snarled at him. “You’re no help, you know?” The lift arrived with a loud metal clang and the doors opened with a scratching noise.
GREEN
“Time’s up!” Mathilda sighed in light disappointment when the open, blood-slick thorax in front of her flickered and disappeared, leaving in its place the clean and scratched pale green surface of her desk. With a shrug she removed her visor and rubbed her eyes against the too bright light of the classroom. Around her, a dozen of her classmates were doing the same; their faces ranged from worried to resigned. “Damn. I killed another one”, said the curly haired guy behind her. “No big deal, Sianic: as long as we’re working with simulators, we can afford a massacre”, said  the plump dark woman that passed among the desks to collect the visors. “Still, maybe it would be better to skip cardiac surgery and opt for something less dangerous for your patients. Like dermatology, maybe?”
BLUE
“Are you sure you don’t need my password?” The screen faded from blue to black, and strings of endless symbols filled the darkness. Alan’s question hadn’t vanished entirely yet when Rob plucked the right strings. He was in, and from the wallpaper a very naked, very modified and extremely flashy girl stared at him with bright metallic eyes. “Classy”, Rob giggled. Still, he gave the model a thorough check. It didn’t last long. When the cloud painted his world white and dazzling, Rob lost every interest in the physical world. Roads that only existed in his head unfurled all around him, and he knew which way to take.
VIOLET
He got to his feet with a grunt and picked his bag from the floor where Jo had dropped it. The roll of violet bills bounced on the cushions. “The money’s here”, he muttered. Nobody answered, but Red’s voice rose in a furious protest. No, thanks but no thanks, I’m too tired for this shit. “... no common sense in that--thanks Rob--in that little head of yours! I can’t believe it!” Well, at least Jo had thanked him at last.
And I'm tagging @antique-symbolism @keen2meecha @calicojackofficial and whoever has a minute to spare <3

On Rebellion
“I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!”[1] These are the words of Howard Beale in “Network”. The American movie classic is about an aging network broadcaster who rebels against the corporate oligarchy and subsequently is murdered at their hands.  Rebellion and the rebels that foment them are a recurrent theme in story and song.  Spartacus[2], Robin of Loxley, William…

Heart of Stone by Johannes T. Evans
The year is 1764, and following a glowing recommendation from his last employer, Henry Coffey, vampire, takes on a new personal secretary: young Theophilus Essex. The man is quite unlike any secretary - or any man, for that matter - that Henry has ever met. — ‘Heart of Stone’ is a slowly unfolding period romance between a vampire and his inimitably devoted clerk: lushly depicted in flowing, lovingly appended prose, we follow the slow understanding these two men grasp of one another, and the cross of their two worlds into each other’s.
Henry Coffey, immortal and ever-oscillating between periods of delighted focus upon his current passion project, is charming, witty, and seems utterly incapable of closing his mouth for more than a few moments; in contrast, Theophilus Essex is quiet and keenly focused, adopting an ever-flat affect, but as time goes on, he relaxes in his employer’s presence.
Craving resounding intimacy but with an ever aware of the polite boundaries for their situation, Coffey and Essex perform a slow dance as they grow closer to one another, and find themselves entangled.
The Strange Case of the Big Sur Benefactor by Jess Faraday (f/f and m/m)
Billiwack, California, 1884. When translator Rosetta Stein comes across her rival, Bartholomew Vincent, under attack by weird, raven-headed man-beasts behind the infamous Puckered Rosebud Gentleman’s Club, she senses opportunity. Misfortune has stalked Vincent from the moment he took on the project, and he’s only too happy to share it. In the meantime, a lady marshal has come to Billiwack, investigating rumors of strange, unlicensed weapons, and she can’t seem to decide if she’d rather kiss Rosetta or arrest her. And Vincent is suffering romantic complications of his own, in the forms of Rosetta’s charming layabout brother, and an amorous professor who won’t take God, no! for an answer.
The Harvest Moon by Joshua Ian (Darkly Enchanted Romance #1)
England, 1834. On the night of a harvest moon, in the shadows of late autumn, Malcolm comes across a quaint village tucked away in the forest. It seems the perfect spot for a weary traveller to lay his head, and maybe find a little company. But there is dark magic afoot, and lots of local gossip swirls around the seductive titian-haired weaver, Daniel. All Malcolm seeks is a night’s pleasure. He never suspected he would have to worry about losing his life. Or his heart.
The Ghost of Hillcomb Hall by Joshua Ian (Darkly Enchanted #2)
England, 1910. Landscape designer Jonas Laurence arrives at the cheerless and fog enswathed Hillcomb Hall, home to the Earl of Stanley and his family, to renovate their crumbling gardens. With a great storm crashing all around, his time is at the mercy of the house’s odd and mysterious occupants. Captivated by the hauntingly attractive portrait of Lord Stanley’s ancestor, which constantly seems to watch and taunt him, Jonas’s dreams become weird and distressing. And his waking moments are consumed by the strange stories and weird atmosphere of the manor estate. Ghostly visits in the night leave Jonas no choice but to accept his attraction to the otherworldly spirit from the painting. But is this affaire de coeur real? Or it all just a trick of the mind, a sinister game being played by the inhabitants of Hillcomb Hall?

Assuming his father’s place has salted old wounds, but when a stranger arrives offering to help, Theo knows he can’t say no, even if Mr. Reynard makes him long for things he had sworn off years ago.

Secrets of Milan is the second book in Edale Lane’s Night Flyer Trilogy, a tale of power, passion, and payback in Renaissance Italy.
The Gentleman Attraction: a short victorian mm paranormal romance by Connor Peterson
Emerson Mallory never mixes business and pleasure. His eyes might wander but he certainly wouldn’t risk his professional reputation over a tryst. Not even for a silver-haired scoundrel who clearly knows his way around a bedroom and makes his heart race with just one look.
When a flirtatious train ride turns into a weekend in close quarters, Bennet Clarke doesn’t agree that it would be best to leave their attraction at the door. He gave up worrying about human sensibilities the night he became a vampire centuries ago, and right now he wants more than one taste of Emerson’s charm and unnerving ability to see past his cavalier masks.
Their host has a few secrets of their own and a madcap plan that requires Emerson to enlist Bennet’s help. When the inevitable happens, Emerson begins to think that maybe Bennet’s way of looking at things isn’t so bad. Bennet, however, is faced with a dilemma. Keep up the ruse, or confess that Emerson has no idea who he’s gotten involved with.
Amidst the flurry of activity surrounding their host, the two men will have to keep their affair secret, plan a successful party, and decide if forever is too much to ask.
The Faerie Hounds of York by Arden Powell
England, 1810. The north is governed by a single rule. Faerie will take as it pleases.
William Loxley is cursed. A pale and monstrous creature haunts his dreams, luring him from London to the desolate, grey landscape of his forgotten childhood. There, it will use him to open a door to Faerie—a fate that will trap Loxley in that glittering, heathen otherworld forever.
His only hope of escaping the creature’s grasp lies with John Thorncress, a dark and windswept stranger met on the moors. The longer Loxley stays in Thorncress’ company, the harder it becomes to fight his attraction to the man. Such attraction can only end in heartbreak—or the noose.
But Thorncress has his own bleak ties to Faerie. They come creeping in with the frost, their howls carrying on the winter wind. If Thorncress’ past catches up with him before they can break the curse, then Loxley will not only lose his soul. He’ll lose Thorncress, too.
Best Laid Plaids by Ella Stainton (Kilty Pleasures #1)
Scotland, 1928 Dr. Ainsley Graham is cultivating a reputation as an eccentric. Two years ago, he catastrophically ended his academic career by publicly claiming to talk to ghosts. When Joachim Cockburn, a WWI veteran studying the power of delusional thinking, arrives at his door, Ainsley quickly catalogues him as yet another tiresome Englishman determined to mock his life’s work. But Joachim is tenacious and openhearted, and Ainsley’s intrigued despite himself. He agrees to motor his handsome new friend around to Scotland’s most unmistakable hauntings. If he can convince Joachim, Ainsley might be able to win back his good name and then some. He knows he’s not crazy—he just needs someone else to know it, too.
Joachim is one thesis away from realizing his dream of becoming a psychology professor, and he’s not going to let anyone stop him, not even an enchanting ginger with a penchant for tartan and lewd jokes. But as the two travel across Scotland’s lovely—and definitely, definitely haunted—landscape, Joachim’s resolve starts to melt. And he’s beginning to think that an empty teaching post without the charming Dr. Graham would make a very poor consolation prize indeed…
Where There’s a Kilt, There’s a Way by Ella Stainton (Kilty Pleasures #2)
Sweden, 1930 Two years ago, Dr. Ainsley Graham proved the existence of ghosts, and fell in love–hard to top that. But a trip to Sweden to research at a prestigious University for the summer is nothing to sneeze at, especially since his partner, psychologist Joachim Cockburn, will be teaching alongside him. A change of scenery might be just the thing.
Their idyllic trip to Sweden is interrupted by a ghost with a proclivity for rude hand gestures and graphic curse words–and a ghastly history begging to be investigated. Life among the living is complicated, too, by a gruff professor who can’t take his eyes off Ainsley, and an enticing new job offer for Joachim. What starts as an adventurous trip abroad turns into mayhem, murder, and…a magical moose? And everyone–well, perhaps not the moose–is a suspect in the death of the ghostly young man who brings them
together to expose secrets, loves lost, and a crime that will shock them all. The Harp and the Sea by Lou Sylvre and Anne Barwell (Magic in the Isles #1) In 1605, Robbie Elliot—a Reiver and musician from the Scottish borders—nearly went to the gallows. The Witch of the Hermitage saved him with a ruse, but weeks later, she cursed him to an ethereal existence in the sea. He has seven chances to come alive, come ashore, and find true love. For over a century, Robbie’s been lost to that magic; six times love has failed. When he washes ashore on the Isle of Skye in 1745, he’s arrived at his last chance at love, his last chance at life.
Highland warrior Ian MacDonald came to Skye for loyalty and rebellion. He’s lost once at love, and stands as an outsider in his own clan. When Ian’s uncle and laird sends him to lonely Skye to hide and protect treasure meant for Bonnie Prince Charlie’s coffers, he resigns himself to a solitary life—his only companion the eternal sea. Lonely doldrums transform into romance and mystery when the tide brings beautiful Robbie Elliot and his broken harp ashore.
A curse dogs them, enemies hunt them, and war looms over their lives. Robbie and Ian will fight with love, will, and the sword. But without the help of magic and ancient gods, will it be enough to win them a future together?
Starcrossed by Allie Therin (Magic in Manhattan #2)
When everything they’ve built is threatened, only their bond remains… 1925 New York
Psychometric Rory Brodigan’s life hasn’t been the same since the day he met Arthur Kenzie. Arthur’s continued quest to contain supernatural relics that pose a threat to the world has captured Rory’s imagination—and his heart. But Arthur’s upper-class upbringing still leaves Rory worried that he’ll never measure up, especially when Arthur’s aristocratic ex arrives in New York. For Arthur, there’s only Rory. But keeping the man he’s fallen for safe is another matter altogether. When a group of ruthless paranormals throw the city into chaos, the two men’s strained relationship leaves Rory vulnerable to a monster from Arthur’s past.
With dark forces determined to tear them apart, Rory and Arthur will have to draw on every last bit of magic up their sleeves. And in the end, it’s the connection they’ve formed without magic that will be tested like never before.
Automata by Hayden Thorne (Curiosities #2)
A disastrous incident at a ball in St. Jude threatens to undo Alexej Sauveterre, and his protective adoptive family whisk him off to San Marco, a mythical and romantic city in the water. Born sickly, young Alexej has grown up resigned to the fact that only his family’s immense wealth makes him barely palatable to other gentlemen seeking partners.
The family’s sojourn in San Marco at first promises a much-needed distraction to Alexej when his older brother introduces him to an aristocratic inventor of automata as well as an old school friend who now tours the European continent as a classical pianist. Baseless hope and heartbreak, however, seem to follow Alexej everywhere.
Alexej’s fascination for automata and his hopeless infatuation with Briant Cousineau draw the attention of an entity from the otherworld, one that’s been wandering the globe for unwary souls to claim through cursed wishes. San Marco’s winged lion summons the city’s supernatural guardians in answer, and in the midst of glittering balls, magical clockwork puppets, and lonely dreams, a terrifying fight for Alexej’s soul darkens the streets of a fading city.

It’s 11:48pm where I am can I still get a FFF?
For future reference, I usually go to bed around 10:30. But I'm not going to make you wait another full week for a Fun Fact, so you'll get a rare Saturday Morning Fun Fact.
Today You Learned:
You know what? Let's hop back to Ivanhoe for a bit. You know basically every Robin Hood trope you've heard of? They're not all from Ivanhoe, but that's the story that made them popular.
-Robin Hood during the reign of Richard I/John? Ivanhoe didn't come up with this, but a lot of traditional Robin Hood stories have him floating around in different kings' reigns. Some, like The Ballad of Robin Hood and Allan-a-Dale doesn't specify the monarch at all, if I recall correctly.
[Okay a bit off-topic but one thing I like about Lawhead's King Raven trilogy is setting the story shortly after the Norman Conquest, in the reign of William II.]
-"Locksley/Loxley" as a title of Robin Hood was basically unknown before Ivanhoe.
-Robin as a returning Crusader? I don't know if Ivanhoe started this--I don't even think he's a returning Crusader in that big, but the title character is and if we're making Robin a nobleman in the time it's not too out there, I guess.
-The ending where King Richard appears in disguise? I don't remember if that's all too common in Robin Hood stories but it does appear in Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, and that's, again, similar to the role of Richard appearing as the Black Knight in Ivanhoe.
-The conflict of Saxons vs Normans is right out of Ivanhoe; it's fairly anachronistic as the Normans would have been in control for quite some time by that point.
-And of course, that thing where Robin goes to an archery contest in disguise and shoots so well that he splits an arrow? That's from Ivanhoe.
And I find this all weird, because most people in the English-speaking world know all about Robin Hood and there are a bajillion movies and television shows, but I don't think that many could tell you anything at all about Ivanhoe, which helped cement his tropes in popular consciousness.

He curled his fingers around a strand of Thorncress' hair, privately marvelling that he was allowed to touch it. "Perhaps, if I've slipped from God's attention, so too have I slipped from the eyes of the law. As if I'm fading from the world entirely."
"Does that trouble you?"
Loxley took a deep breath. "It should. But here, like this? I could be persuaded that it's not so terrible a thing."
"Then let me persuade you some more."
Their mouths joined again, hot and insistent, and Loxley threw himself into the sensation of it. He wanted to map the planes and angles of Thorncress' body, to feel his sweat-slicked skin. It was wild and it was reckless, but Loxley had been careful all his life, and it had earned him nothing but years of loneliness, and a fae enchantment he couldn't break. He smiled against Thorncress' lips.

28: any scene/line you wrote that you didn’t expect to write/that surprised you once it was written?
Simple answer:  ALL OF IT!
Longer answer/explanation:  No, seriously, I first started getting interested in writing when I was in high school.  I’d go to every writer’s workshop they had whenever I could get out of class, and I really enjoyed it.  But then college hit and any/all creative juice I had just .. vanished.  WRITER’S BLOCK.  That lasted through college and on through grad school and even through my teaching years.  That didn’t mean I didn’t read or do research for potential story ideas - I did, but nothing ever got written but the notes.
After ten years or so, after I left teaching and moved to where I live now, after I got away from academia and started my life ‘over’, the muses started to poke at me.  Slow at first, but it started trickling out.  (I look back now and shudder at those pieces - which I still have, some 25 years later)  I found encouragement in unexpected places (my now Ex, for starters; I sure wasn’t going to get it from my family, even if they knew I was trying to write), and it kept on going.
The biggest push was when my Ex got me Dragon Age for Christmas in 2009.  That changed my whole world!  Story ideas started to flow.  Mass Effect created a TIDAL WAVE, and it hasn’t stopped yet.  My fandoms are relatively limited (DA, ME, Horizon Zero Dawn (maybe), Werewolf: The Apocalypse), but I’ve now ventured back toward writing original fiction too, and so ... yeah.
ALL OF IT.
But, if you want something more specific, hmm ...  *rolls d20 ....*

(taken from my WIP, Mari’s Men; this is the initial draft and needs editing, but it’s a story I am incredibly invested in and will some day be satisfied with)
“Someone approaches.”
Little John’s whispered warning was just loud enoughto catch Marian’s ears.  Carefully, sheeased her way far enough out onto the tree branch to glimpse the figureapproaching them.  From this height andstill distant, all she could determine was that he was dressed in darkclothing.  It was several minutes beforeshe could narrow it down to the black robes of a priest.  He stood tall, broad shouldered, and had thegeneral shape of a man who might be a soldier, she thought.
“Black canon,” Much mumbled from below.  The shrubs surrounding him showed only theslightest hint of movement as he altered his position, resembling that of abreeze blowing through.
Her gaze turned again to the man approaching.  Much, as a hunter, had excellent eyesight andcould see more detail than she or even Little John from further away.  She quickly considered her options.  She had inherited Robyn today, so thedecision was hers to make.  There weredangers in approaching men of the cloth and incurring their wrath or the wrathof the good Lord above was not on Marian’s list of duties this day.  “I will speak to him,” she murmured beforescurrying backwards on the limb.  Shecarefully lowered herself to the ground behind the base of the tree andadjusted her hood.  Drawing her bow andnocking an arrow into place, she took a deep breath before stepping out ontothe path.
Robyn’s timing was, as always, excellent and thepriest, now near enough to recognize as a black canon as Much suggested, wasbrought up short.  “Why do you block myway?” he demanded irritably.
Robyn, bow still lowered, stood casually before him, hood drawn far enough forward to hide the upper half of his face fromonlookers.  “You travel through my landswithout permission,” he replied.  “Paythe tax and you shall be free to continue.”
The priest scowled, eyes narrowing as if trying topeer beneath the hood.  “These are theking’s lands.”
“And I am caretaker for good King Richard,” Robyncountered.  “Know this, you will pay oneway or another before we are through. Either the tax with coin, or with your life for trespassing on theking’s land.  What say you?”
The canon straightened, rising to his full heightwhich was substantially taller than Robyn. “And you expect to enforce this law of yours?” he scoffed.  He took a step forward towards Robyn.
Robyn, quicker than it took to blink, had his bowraised, aimed at the man’s heart, pulled the bowstring to its fullextension.  The canon wore no armor; thepiercing would go straight through.  “Ido,” Robyn replied, “and I should think you would see that.  I wish no quarrel with you, canon.”
“No,” the prior replied, “you wish only to rob me ofwhat I do not have.”
Robyn’s head tilted slightly to the side.  “The nearest priory is that of Thurgarton,”he decided.  “Do not tell me you aredestitute.  The conditions of the canonsthere are well known among the rest of the world.”
“I am a prior of Fiskerton,” he said.  Another scowl, darker this time, marked hisface.  “I was banished from Thurgartonbecause I opposed Prior Thomas.”
“Don’t believe him, Robyn!” shouted Little John fromthe left.
“Aye,” Much called out.  From the way his voice carried, he had workedhis way around the priest without notice. “They tax us as heavily as the king and his family!”
“We don’t!” the canon insisted.  Sighing, he pinched the bridge of hisnose.  “Or, rather, I don’t.  I was banished fromThurgarton was because I protested the deviation from the traditions of ourorder: poverty, chastity and obedience.”
“Banished?” Robyn challenged.  “I find that difficult to believe!”
“He lies!” Much shouted, now further to Robyn’s rightbut still behind the canon.  Robyn had nodoubt the man’s bow was aimed and ready.
“My disagreements with Prior Thomas run deep,” heinsisted.  “We both were in the runningfor the position.  Unfortunately for me,Thomas has a better relationship with Prince John.”
Betterrelationship.  They acerbic tone he used left no doubt thatthis prior was, like many others within the church, expecting to be brought upthrough the ranks along with the future king.
“And if you had succeeded instead of Prior Thomas?”Robyn asked.
His eyes were dark to begin with and the slits theynow became were enough to hint at anger, deep and profound.  “Thurgarton would be a better community,” hereplied, “and one not so closely tied to a spoiled prince.”
It was that last that caught Robyn’s attention and thepure hatred (??) in his tone that made the final decision.  Carefully relaxing hold on the bowstring andlowering the weapon, Robyn said, “If you are from Fiskerton, why are you notthere now?”
“Even that has now been denied me,” he replied.  “Prior Thomas, with Prince John’s support, has relieved me of my duties.”  Hesighed, eyes looking upward toward the tree-filled sky.  “I was heading north and considering myoptions.”
“Why north?”
“It is where the road leads?”  He shrugged, eyes falling to settle uponRobyn again.  “I have little but what Iwear,” he admitted.  “I have no coin forlodging or food.  Kill me if you must, butI leave nothing behind.”
Stepping forward, Robyn waved a hand so Little Johnand Much could see it.  “What if I wereto offer you a cathedral beneath the skies, canon?” Robyn asked.  “According to those in positions of power, weare nothing but a group of misguided souls. But we are more than that, and we could use spiritual guidance, if youare of a mind.”
He drew back a step or two and the startled expressionwas easy to identify.  “To what end?”
“Chastity. Poverty.  Obedience,” Robynreplied.  “The poverty we can provide, the chastity, well, I wouldn’t hold your breath on that count.”  Both Little John and Much chuckled.  They were nearer now, but still remained outof easy sight.  “The obedience would beup to you and your skills of persuasion. Do you search for a challenge?”
The canon blinked a few times, looked around them fora moment, then back at Robyn.  “Acathedral under the skies, you said?”
Robyn nodded. “Our camp is in the forest.  Yourcongregation among those most persecuted. This is the only home they have. They come to us willingly, each aiding according to their ownabilities.  We have bakers and tanners, blacksmiths, armorers, seamstresses and ….”
The prior nodded, cutting off Robyn’s speech.  “And outlaws,” he concluded in a voice loudenough for Much and Little John to hear, “in desperate need of Divineintervention.”  Taking a deep breath, hesaid, “I will gladly take on the duties of spiritual advisor, master outlaw, but with one stipulation.”
“That being?”
“I get to speak to you face to face and see you eye toeye.”
A moment of stunned silence rippled around the area, and Robyn heard sputtered protests rise from Much and Little John.  Raising a hand, they silenced.  “I am but a name, priest,” Robynreplied.  “A rumor, a legend among thelocal folk.  I am nothing but --”
“You are their leader, are you not?” hecountered.  “I will give my pledge toyou, and you alone, but I would do it face to face.”
Sighing, Robyn nodded. Shouldering the bow, gloved hands rose and carefully eased the hoodback, settling it around Marian’s neck. She looked up at the priest, green-grey eyes meeting stark brown for along moment and not flinching.  Offeringher hand, she told him, “Welcome to Sherwood, prior.  Have you a name we can call you?”
Unfazed by the appearance of a woman beneath thearcher’s clothing, he extended a hand and took hers.  “Tuck,” he replied.  “I am called Prior Tuck.”
Marian smiled, full recognition settling in.  “And you might have heard of me as LadyMarian FitzWalter,” she told him, “if you have been in these parts for anylength of time.  But these days I am LadyMarian of Loxley.”
His eyes widened in surprise.  “Lord William’s sister?”  She nodded. “I was sent to Fiskerton just after your brother’s return as lord,” heexplained.  “I heard that you came withhim to visit his lands.”
“It has been a long time, and things are certainlydifferent than I hoped,” she said.
“I thought you were governing in your brother’sabsence?”
“I am,” she agreed, “but Providence has given me anotherpurpose as well.”  Little John and Muchjoined them then and Marian introduced them. “The legend of Robyn and his hoode has taken on new meaning these days, and we try to put it to good use.”
“The Lord has truly guided me then,” he murmured.  “In all honesty, once I was relieved of myduties at Fiskerton, I had no idea where to go. I thought perhaps to York or other points north, but I know no onethere.”
Smiling, Marian nodded towards the north andeast.  “Come with us, prior,” she encouraged.  “We have just what you need.”
