Oh, Robin. I was such a bully, wasn’t I? I’m sorry for that. When I think back to our childhood, I struggle. On the one hand, we were just children, and that’s a fine excuse. But on the other, I overcompensated in a rotten way. I wanted to scare you. I sure did. I wanted you to be so scared you had no choice but to face it. To stand up like I’d stood up, to find it within yourself to co-exist in a house you knew was haunted. What you heard in the basement was not me. What you saw twice in the pink room was not my doing. And I was so glad for you to encounter these things, to see what I’d seen, to be given the chance to overcome your own fears, so that you, too, might live a life devoid of fear, so that you, too, might achieve everything you set out to do.
But I went about it wrong. I went at you with the zealotry of a fanatic, or, on the days when I’m easier on myself, as a child.

She eyed him critically. “I never thought that the Great Inconstant would be so finicky. I’ve been told men, children, and animals were often the object of your attentions.”
Humor left him, but he gave her a lazy smile. “I do draw the line at children,” he said. “And chickens,” he added as an afterthought.
“I’m prettier than a chicken.” Lord, she was a dangerous woman! If only she were a man, he could enjoy her deceptive wit.
“So you are,” he said. “But there’s no need to convince me. I have every intention of having you.”
And that, of all things, shocked her. Her luscious mouth dropped open in astonishment, and her eyes were wide with surprise. She composed herself so quickly that if he’d started his daily drinking, he might not have noticed, but he considered her reaction a singular triumph. “The stories must be true,” she said lightly. “You really are mad. Stick to the chickens.”

Classic: a small word that carries enormous weight, although sometimes it’s tossed around a bit too casually; a reputation earned over the course of time, and given only to those rare films that stand up to repeated viewings. That being said, The Princess Bride has aged remarkably well. I think this is in part because of the quality of the writing, the directing, and the wonderful ensemble of actors I had the sheer pleasure of working with.
Even though it is the fans who have truly kept the memory of the movie alive, each of us in the cast has remembrances of making the film, things that have stayed with us over the years. All of us have stories about encounters or moments, like being approached and asked to recite a favorite Princess Bride line. Mandy swears that barely a day goes by that he isn’t asked by someone, somewhere, to recite Inigo Montoya’s most famous words, in which he vows vengeance on behalf of his father.
“And I never let them down,” he says.

god i love rating classics on goodreads. this book was published in 46 BC and has been cited in philosophical/historical/religious texts for over 2000 years. entire chapters are lost to history. it has been translated dozens if not hundreds of times with each new edition representing the pinnacle of a scholar’s life’s work. i gave it 3 stars.

A quarter hour later, he was on his way to Golden Square. It was about 15 miles to the boarding house, so he’d packed a basket with meat pasties, fresh bread, apple tarts, and flagons of wine for the journey. But when the carriage pulled up in front of Lennox’s home, Jon’s stomach churned, forcing him to take several deep breaths.
Why are you doing this to yourself? Several hours confined together in a carriage followed by a full week in Lennox’s company, to pine and yearn and generally behave like a complete lovesick twit?
Jon fought the urge to tap the roof and turn around. However, he couldn’t change his mind now, for Lennox was strolling toward the carriage with a bulging satchel slung over his shoulder.
God. The way he moved. Sensual as a tiger on the hunt, loose-limbed yet purposeful. Every article of clothing artfully arranged: his usual jewel-tone jacket utterly contemptuous of Brummell’s grays, with tight black breeches that drew the eye to an impressive bulge, and a shirt with enough lace at the cuffs to stir a breeze. Lennox Townsend was a rake. No, king of the rakes. Forever may he reign.

“‘Goodnight, goodnight! Parting is such sweet—’”
A fat pot of pink begonias sailed through the crisp evening air and crashed upon the lawn in a scrambled mess of broken porcelain, water, and abused blooms.
Apparently, standing below the second-floor window of one’s beloved whilst quoting Shakespeare didn’t hold the exact air of shiver-inducing sentiment one would expect. Especially if the man doing all the quoting was most definitely drunk…and terribly unwanted, if the objects being tossed out the window were any indication.
Looking out her second-floor window into the garden of the house next door, Charlotte leaned her elbows on the sill, her chin resting in her hand.
Renting a house next to the stunningly beautiful heiress Lady Rosalind was certainly turning out to be entertaining.

When I like people immensely I never tell their names to any one. It seems like surrendering a part of them. You know how I love secrecy. It is the only thing that can make modern life wonderful or mysterious to us. The commonest thing is delightful if one only hides it. When I leave town I never tell my people where I am going. If I did, I would lose all my pleasure. It is a silly habit, I dare say, but somehow it seems to bring a great deal of romance into one’s life.

“Christ, did Montrose offer you one of his daughters to take as a wife?”
Rolling his eyes, Gideon didn’t bother to look at Whitfield, who had reappeared out of the crowd next to him. “You’re uttering all manner of ridiculous things this night.”
The duke chuffed. “I insist you give me my due, sirrah. I’m certain that at least eighty percent of the words that fall from my lips on any given day are ridiculous. I don’t save my antics for you alone.”

With regard to the anomaly of the UFO, it’s easy to recognize its potential to create a “paradigm shift,” depending on what is discovered once science decides to recognize it. Because of the extraterrestrial possibility—a challenge to our understanding of the physical universe and our place in it—there is, indeed, a risk of a very large scientific revolution. If the UFO is determined to be a secret technological creation of mankind or something more complex such as a manifestation of nature from perhaps another dimension, the discovery would be potentially transformative. And Kuhn says it can all happen due to one defining, “noncumulative” event—perhaps one pivotal, lengthy UFO display, a new type of explosive physical evidence, or even communication via radio waves or other more advanced means—an event that will leave scientists certain as to the nature and origin of the phenomenon.
