Thorncress' gaze turned searching. "You keep many things from me, Mr. Loxley. I hope this conversation has given you some relief."
"Some. I do take comfort in knowing you'd not cast me aside for it." Tentatively, he spread one hand over Thorncress' chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heart through his shirt. They had no way of breaking the creature's enchantment, and his days were surely numbered. For once in his life, he wanted to be brave. "But knowing that I have such desires is not the same as knowing that I desire you."
Thorncress stilled for a second, and Loxley held his breath. "No," Thorncress finally said. "I'd not turn you away for that, either."

THE THROBBING MEMBERS REVIEW: A Novel Arrangement by Arden Powell
If you’re going to write a book about polyamory, maybe don’t give one of your main characters the last name Turtledove. -Smurf
We have to talk about the bestiality. -Catherine
There was no conflict in this book and I’m going to have to read a million toxic romances to recover. -Sarah
Once again, we tried to pick a spicy problematic book and only read about happy people. So annoying. -Margo

Theme Song: We’ll Never Have Problems Again by Rachel Bloom and Vincent Rodriguez III
Summary: Elizabeth has just married Arthur, despite the attempts to drive her away made by his best friend/roommate Jules. Elizabeth realizes that Arthur and Jules are secretly in love, and decides to matchmake the two of them. Also, there’s magic, not that it’s ever relevant.
Review:
This was overall a fun enough book, but the couple, and then throuple, did not communicate like normal people or really any people at all. There was just no conflict or drama. I’m not saying there has to be life-shattering conflict or trauma, but there has to be something going on. You cannot just immediately agree with your signature other. Where’s the hurt feelings? The confrontation? As the designated slut friend, you need to have a moment (or three) of “I want to do this hedonistic thing” and then apprehension about your desire potentially making your pre existing pleasurable relationship messy/unsustainable. This is true for every category of life, including jobs and moves. This isn’t only about sex, this is about literally everything in life. I just cannot understand.
As usual, we have been (perhaps) unfailingly negative about a book that I genuinely enjoyed. The writing was actually really well done. (Which is rare when it comes to threesome/polyam books). That being said, “command f” would really have  been useful. The occasional elements of magic were really unrelated to the rest of the plot. On the rare occasion that it popped up, it was a little distracting. Like oh! Yes, there is magic here. For some reason. There simply was no need for it to be there. A little light editing would have really benefited the book over all.
The time period falls into the EXACT same issue as the magic. It was there so we can have an aura of *~trauma~* , but it really did not serve any purpose except to confuse the time period. MUSTACHES WERE NOT POPULAR!! This is a deeply bizarre historical anachronism. The author should have chosen a different time period that lined up better with the overall cultural norms and fashion that they did a genuinely good job writing about throughout.

Additional Ratings
Historical Accuracy: 0/10
Apparently, this book took place in the 1920s, even though all of the characters acted as if they were in the 1800s.
Sexy Sex: 3/10
Meh.
Trauma Score: 5/10
Earned 10 points for The War, lost 5 points for paying no attention to the actual effects of WWI on the people who lived through it.
Notes: It quickly became clear to me that the first book in this series is just Jeeves and Wooster fanfiction.

Epitaph by Mary Doria Russell - 4.25/5 stars
Surprise queer love story at the end! Also made me regret that we didn't stop in Tombstone, AZ, when we drove by it on our vacation to Arizona last year.
The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem - DNF at pg 18
Prince and Assassin by Tavia Lark - 5/5 stars
This book was A DELIGHT. I didn't expect to love it so much because I've been burned by so many Rainbow Crate selections, but goddamn this one was good. I ordered the next five books in the series from the parking ramp where we watched the eclipse, lol.
Briarley by Aster Glenn Gray - 4.75/5 stars
The gay, WWII retelling of Beauty and the Beast you didn't know you needed. Really lovely novella.
New Adult by Timothy Janovsky - 4.5/5 stars
Time travel! Crystals! I'm a sucker for books where the main character realizes that their career isn't everything (clearly, since my debut novel is about that). I love Timothy Janovsky. He's so good at writing characters who are deeply unlikable but who you root for from page 1 to get their shit together.
Stars, Hide Your Fires by Jessica Mary Best - 3/5 stars
A Glorious Mess by Kennedy Sutton - 4/5 stars
This is a prequel to a series I haven't read, but I really enjoyed it!
The Midnight Kingdom by Tara Sim - 4.25/5 stars
This is another high fantasy where I was like, okay, what happened again in the first one...? It slowly came back to me, haha. I love Tara Sim and this book was just as good as the first in the series. Definitely excited for the conclusion.
The Body in the Back Garden by Mark Waddell - 4/5 stars
Cozy mysteries aren't really my thing, but I really liked this one. There was enough violence to keep it from twee overload.
The Bookseller's Boyfriend by Heidi Cullinan - 4/5 stars
The Path by Ariel Tachna - 4.25/5 stars
Aka, now I want to hike the Inca Trail. This was a great book about two guides on the Inca Trail in Peru (and if you know me you might know I have interest in guiding). Not only was the book just good, but I loved the exposure to a country that I don't know much about.
The Bachelor's Valet by Arden Powell - 5/5 stars
Hello????? This book is so good???? If you loved Freya Marske's The Last Binding trilogy, give this series a shot. It's very lighthearted, and I loved dumb, kindhearted Alphonse with all my heart from the first sentence. Also the cover is super pretty, I had to keep taking breaks to stare at it.
Assassin by Accident by EJ Russell - 4/5 stars
Tramps and Vagabonds by Aster Glenn Gray - 5/5 stars
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Okay so I knew I'd love this book, because I went feral for Honeytrap, which I read last year. God this one was so good too. It's about two young men who ride the rails in the Midwest during the Depression. James is homeless and Timothy has parents he could go back to...except he's in love with James, obvs. If you're a fan of Cat Sebastian's mid-century books (We Could Be So Good, The Cabots), PLEASE read this. Gray deserves to be much more widely read.
The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley (reread) - 5/5 stars
Here's my copy after rereading:
Tumblr media
Those are all the spots that were particularly emotionally devastating. This reread secures The Kingdoms as my favorite Natasha Pulley book. Maybe my favorite book, full stop. Missouri and Joe, god be still my heart.

Review of The Bachelor's Valet (Flos Magicae 2) by Arden Powell
Blurb Alphonse Hollyhock is blessed with wealth, class, and more beauty than brains. Though he hasn’t got a lick of wit or magic to his name, he’s perfectly content living life as an airheaded bachelor with his valet—the clever, unflappable Jacobi—by his side to ensure everything runs smoothly. All he lacks, according to his mother, is a wife.Despite Alphonse’s protests, he’s to marry Aaliyah…

a thief and a gentleman is so funny. morgan taking sebastian to dinner with his friends like ‘be careful btw I don’t want these people to know I’m gay,’ and then sebastian walks into a household occupied by a transparent lavender marriage, the man of the house practically cuddling his valet at the table and the woman of the house talking about the magical love-aphrodisiac flower she had stolen for her ‘best friend’ for her birthday (who cooked this dinner and also lives here), and their current guests, a bisexual throuple who also can’t keep their hands off each other and one of whom paints queer erotic art for a living. morgan. sweetie. you’re not even the gayest one here.
