Quick Review: Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo Rating: 5/5
Why did I leave this on my TBR for so long??? It was so, so beautiful!
I loved everything about it - the lesbian pulp fiction novel Lily finds in the drug store, the insight into Chinese-American culture in the 50s, the struggles against the Red and Lavender Scares, the charming - and accurate!!! - portrayal of butch/femme culture. I loved it all.
An instant favourite for me that I would recommend to anyone with an interest in historical fiction featuring diverse characters.

Just finished these two and OMG why do I not hear more about these???? This series was sooooo amazing. Much better than the shadow and bone series!!! I don't understand how they haven't been made into big movies yet!!
5⭐ for both of them!
I fell in love with the characters. I literally cried over them. Jesper and Wylan deserve happiness forever because they are sweet babies ❤️
The actual story was so great. All the elements that go into a big heist with a lit of moving parts. The political aspect of the story. The risks of working with other people. It was just absolutely amazing!! 10/10 would read again.

Book Review: Dreadnought by April Daniels ✨🏙️⚡️
Tumblr media
rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕
(5/5)
After Dreadnought, the world’s greatest superhero, is killed in combat, closeted trans girl Danny Tozer inherits his powers and is transformed to have the body she’s always wanted to have. Now she has to deal with having superpowers and being an out trans woman, all the while hunting down the supervillain who murdered her predecessor.
This book was phenomenal, and I’m kind of at a loss for words to describe how much I liked it.
To start, I love the world of this book. This is such a classic superhero story. Daniels uses the conventions of the genre without making things feel like a parody and subverts tropes just enough to make the story distinct.
I also really love Dreadnought as a trans narrative. This book doesn’t shy away from transphobia. Between Danny’s parents, kids at her school, and other heroes she meets, we get a pretty broad and realistic representation of the types of abuse a young trans woman might face. There’s also so much trans joy in this book. It was really nice to see Danny come into herself, and it was cathartic to watch her realize that no one could take her transition away from her. This is the type of story that will give trans kids hope for the future.
I would recommend this book to literally everyone. In fact, I plan on recommending this book to literally everyone. But because that’s not helpful, I’ll be more specific and say I highly recommend this book to fans of Andrew Joseph White. Obviously, it’s very different from his work, genre-wise, but I think the themes are really similar. If you like Hell Followed with Us and The Spirit Bares It’s Teeth, I can definitely see you liking Dreadnought.

The Tithenai Chronicles by Foz Meadows is a romantasy duology consisting of A Strange and Stubborn Endurance and All The Hidden Paths. Both books are dual POVs, contain fast-paced mysteries, and are ultimately about the growing achillean relationship between the two main characters.
Tumblr media
A Strange and Stubborn Endurance
I love the first book in this series. The introduction to this world is done really well and I ended up flying through this book in just a few days. I love the world of Ralia and how casually queer it is, I loved the political intrigue, and I found the plot to be exciting and surprising.
Most of all, I love Velasin and Caethari. Both characters - and especially their relationship - is the true highlight of this book (along with Markel, of course). Vel and Cae have such a sweet slowburn throughout this novel. I finished this excited to dive into the sequel so I could see more of where their relationship went.
Please note: this book does contain a few trigger warnings that readers should be aware of (sexual assault, suicidal idealation, self-harm, and animal death). The book is ultimately about healing from these events but, because of that, they play a large role in a main character's growth and in the book overall.
All The Hidden Paths
I loved this even more than A Strange & Stubborn Endurance. The plot of All The Hidden Paths is just as fast-paced and twisty as the original book's but I loved the character and relationship growth in this one more. Vel and Cae's realtionship continues the growth from the previous novel and ends in an even more satisfying and healthy place at the end. Vel and Cae also grow a lot individually as they both deal with the events of book one.
In addition, I loved the new characters and the further exploration of the conflicting politics of their two nations.
There is a little of the miscommunication trope at the beginning of the book (which is not my favorite trope) but the pay off makes it very worth it in the end.
I'd love to see the series continue. I can't get enough of Vel, Cae, Markel, and all the others.
Tags for the series: queer, Achillean, romance, adult fantasy, magic, slow-burn, arranged marriage, spicy

Review: The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White Rating: 5/5
Andrew Joseph White has knocked it out of the park again! When I saw he was going to write a trans horror novel set in Victorian England, I was a little hesitant. The premise seemed so outlandish and I wasn't sure it was something I'd enjoy. But what a waste of time all that worrying was.
This novel is ... horrifying, tense, romantic, queer, and utterly unputdownable. What Silas goes through is completely gruesome and even listening to the audiobook there were parts I had to pause and take a few breaths to get my head on straight again. But it was a marvellous story that I can honestly see myself reading again which is not something I feel very often.
But what I loved most was really the characters. I loved following Silas along as he tried to figure out what was happening and what he could do to make himself safe. I loved Daphne's everything. I loved that the other girls at Braxton's all had each other's backs, even when they didn't necessarily like each other. Hell, I even loved the villains -- it was cathartic to just have some truly despicable characters in a book who you could just relentlessly hate.
AJW is swiftly becoming a favourite of mine. I've already looked up his next release and even though it doesn't sound like my kind of thing, I'm going to give it a go because he always manages to blow me away. He certainly has this time.

Long time no see! When I say I'm a slow reader I actually mean it, I haven't finished a book since I finished Manacled (I was too depressed to read anything else). Anyhow THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ!!!
I loved the plot, the characters (especially Nathaniel loml and Silas), the world building, the cover, everything. Nathaniel's and Elisabeth's relationship is pure gold I love them. Nathaniel's and Silas' bond goes beyond just a bargain and I'm obsessed. Speaking of relationships, I truly wish we could have seen more of Silas and Elisabeth, because they're lovely.
The chapters were the perfect length in my opinion, not too long, not too short. I have nothing to complain so this review will be sort because usually I complain very very much (oops).
Anyway 5/5 stars tyvm see you tomorrow (or next week in case I forget) for my review of the novella (also loved that one). Highly recommend this book especially if I like you.

My 2022 5 Star Reads
Tumblr media
These are all of the books I read in 2022 and rated 5 stars. I highly recommend them, so check out my reviews and feel free to ask me any questions! Let me know if you enjoyed them as well! Unfortunately not as many as previous years.
Hover Car Racer by Matthew Reilly Hover Car Racer is aimed at younger audiences than the typical Matthew Reilly fare, but I still love re-reading it. It’s still a fast-paced thriller with heroes to root for; the typical underdog tale in which the protagonist must fight for survival and success amongst a group that largely has it easier than him. As always, Reilly includes enough twists and turns to make it interesting. Out of all of Reilly’s novels, Hover Car Racer has perhaps the most characterisation. Jason Chaser is a young hover car racer who has recently won a place at the International Race School, where racers either make it on to the Pro Circuit - or they crash and burn. But of course, he’s much younger than the others and has a target on his back. [REVIEW]
The Younger Wife by Sally Hepworth Tully and Rachel are upset when they discover their father has a new girlfriend, half his age. Stephen is still married to their mother, who is in a care facility with end-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Hepworth sets up the fact that something tragic has occurred at the wedding of Heather and Stephen, and then the novel vacillates between the past and present. These events are told from multiple perspectives, including Tully, Rachel, Heather. I love all three of these women. They are eccentric and a little strange, but their stories and perspectives are captivating. Hepworth brilliantly foreshadows the toxic undercurrent throughout this novel, and my instincts and her clues told me what this was before the reveal. [REVIEW]
Book Lovers by Emily Henry I’m not a huge romance reader, but I loved everything about this book. Emily Henry takes a classic romance trope head on and brilliantly turns it around. This is an enemies to lovers romance, and they have incredible chemistry, but importantly they move between banter and serious conversations. At one point in a vulnerable moment Charlie says, ‘maybe I just say the right thing for you.’ and that pretty much sums up their relationship. Neither Nora nor Charlie have to hide behind a persona when they are together in order to appear more palatable. They are more comfortable in each other’s presence even before anything romantic happens. [REVIEW]
Persuasion by Jane Austen Whilst P&P is my favourite, I also love most of Austen’s other works, including Persuasion. Anne Elliot is a more introspective main character, who grows in maturity and understanding as she chooses to make the right choices for herself. I love Anne’s point of view, and how the truth and depth of everyone’s feelings is slowly realised. “You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope...I have loved none but you.”
The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn (Bridgertons #2) I love the dynamic between Kate and Anthony, and I especially love who Kate is as an individual and how she presents herself. The chemistry and banter between the two is perfect; they are both such staunchly proud characters who must always have the last word. But their relationship is so much more than that; their dynamic works because they can understand each other in ways no one else does. How their relationship progresses, and Edwina’s role in the narrative, is quite different from the show. [REVIEW]
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Yes, I still can’t manage to write a review for P&P even though it’s my favourite book. That would be because anything I write would pale in comparison to how I truly feel about it. If you’re interested in giving a classic novel a go, I definitely recommend it.
