Chapter 10: Fetch, Boy!
Word Count: 932
TWs: Sickness/nausea, breaking and entering, stealing, unhealthy relationships
/) /) ( • ༝•)
It seemed nothing could go right for Vanessa since Vanita showed up. Now, on top of second-guessing herself about how the rave had gone, she was beginning to feel ill. No matter what she tried, nausea pills, herbal tea, water, exercise, eating light, her symptoms remained. After a week, she was surprised she had anything more to chuck up. She was barely keeping down water and saltines and was beginning to experience severe headaches. She had stuck it out this far, but she knew she’d have to call in on Tuesday.
Not to mention she had absolutely no idea where the symptoms had come from. If she had taken any drugs at the rave, they should’ve been flushed from her system by now. While she shuddered and sweat in her bed with a bucket on standby, she almost swore she heard a door opening. Then she closed her eyes, briefly slipping out of consciousness… only to jolt back to reality when she heard footsteps. Someone had entered her room, though her reflexes were too delayed to do too much about it.
“Sawyer?? What are you doing in my apartment?? How did you get in?!” Vanessa asked weakly, trying to sit up.
“Don’t hurt yourself trying to get up,” Sawyer chastised, putting his hands out to stop her. He wore black latex gloves. “And frankly, you’re wasting energy. Don’t mind how I got in or why I’m here, just answer my questions.”
Vanessa made a puzzled and anxious expression. “I don’t understand…”
He took a breath. “When was the last time you saw your father?”
Her stomach rolled unhappily as her eyes widened at the question. “Why would you ask me something like that??”
“Just answer the question, Vanessa.”
“N-no, I won’t… I can’t… get out of my apartment!”
“Answer. The question. I can stand here all day… not like you can do anything about it. Honestly, a security guard who doesn’t even keep a weapon by her bedside, it’s like you’re asking for an intruder.”
He sighed when she began to tremble under his gaze. “How about I make you some tea? Calm your nerves…” He turned and exited the room. Immediately, Vanessa dry-heaved into her bucket, groaning and coughing afterwards. Tea? She had tried that already. It wasn’t going to stay down for long. Sawyer returned shortly, forcing a steaming mug into her hands.
“Drink up. When was the last time you saw your father?” He enunciated each word as he asked the question again. Reluctantly, Vanessa drank. Woozy and out of her mind, she couldn’t exactly refuse.
“Mom got full custody of me when I was eleven, but probably when I was sixteen… I talked to him over the phone when I graduated high school, and that was the last time I contacted him, ever.”
“Thank you for cooperating. And by ever, you mean a complete lack of contact since then, correct?”
“Yeah…” What did you put in this tea??
“So you’ve no idea of his current whereabouts?”
She nodded, then instantly regretted it, closing her eyes against the pain and nausea.
“Do you still remember his phone number, given that it hasn’t changed in the past decade?”
“Why are you asking me about my dad??”
“You should drink more of that tea.”
She did, resulting in nothing but disgust.
“The phone number, Vanessa.”
“Right… urgh… it’s…” She squinted as she tried to retrieve it from her memories. With little effort, it came to her as clearly and as violently as a baseball through a window. “555-1252.”
Sawyer quickly made note of this in his phone. “That’s all I needed.” He then walked over to her closet and opened it, examining the articles within.
“Hey, what are you doing…?!” Vanessa asked, her panic delayed as she set aside the ghastly tea.
“Just taking some things off of your hands. Lay back down.”
“Stop that!” She hoisted herself up onto her elbows, turning her head toward the wall. “Help! Somebody, if you’re home, help, I’m being robbed!”
“Shhhut, shut up!” Sawyer quickly ran back over, clamping his hand over her dry lips. “Drink the tea!”
Whimpering as he went back to the closet, she drank more tea. She watched helplessly as he began throwing her clothes into a garbage bag he had taken from his pocket.
“Why are you doing this??” She whispered. He didn’t answer. “Sawyer, you’re not a bad guy… this isn’t like you…”
“Have you finished that tea yet?”
“It’s horrible…”
“Yes, but it will help,” he lied. She gulped the rest of it down.
“There… are you happy?” She suppressed a vile belch. “Get out of my apartment…”
I’m sorry, Vanessa. He closed the garbage bag and her closet, then finally did as he was told, leaving the room, with her a wreck in her bed. She collapsed against the mattress, exhausted. Why am I so sick??
Once out of the apartment building, Sawyer ducked around the corner to text Vanita his findings.
S: I got the phone number and the clothes
V: good boy~
V: well, don’t be a stranger, send it over
S: 555-1252
V: thanks for finally growing a pair ;)
Sawyer grimaced at the texts. She’d treated him so horribly since they started “working” together, and yet, he couldn’t walk away. It was easy when they were in bed, or when he was alone, and could just think of her as a fantasy. That bubble burst whenever she bossed him around like this. She was making him into a criminal! All because he had a thing for alternative chicks… and apparently crazy chicks, too.

the case study of vanitas starters - volume 1 - taken from HERE edit as you see fit!
mémoire 1: vanitas - in the event of rusty hopes
take my advice, leave her and get lost, if you don't, you'll get hurt
what is this?! we're alive, that makes no sense!
that's all? what are you saying, that was phenomenal!
all that over this book? no one's ever looked at it with shining eyes like that before!
yes, you're funny and i've decided i like you
great fighting power, a sturdy body, no doubt you'll make a fine shield!
i'll do as i please, use methods i choose, and no matter what you people want, i will save you without fail
this is the tale of how we walked together, of all we gained and lost, and how at the end of that journey, i would kill him with my own two hands
mémoire 2: noé - in the city of flowers
i'll say it as often as i must, lend me your strength!
why not? what objection could you have?
listen to what i have to say first, if we talk it through, you'll understand
then you slept like a rock for nearly half a day until the poison was out of your system, do you understand now?
this teacher of yours has an awfully vague way of putting things
i've got it! i suspect i just don't like you very much!
i should probably go with you, but listening obediently to someone i don't like is bad for my mental health, or rather, physiologically impossible
anyone too ill-mannered to knock might as well be an intruder
i'll thank you not to take liberties with my former patient
this is exactly the problem with senile old fools who chain themselves to past conventions and stop thinking
YOU are helping ME! i am not helping you!
i know i'm repeating myself, but you mustn't kill, all right?
i can't forgive anyone who turns their blade on you
no matter who tries to harm you, i will crush them all
mémoire 3: jeanne - the hellfire witch
i don't do more work than i get paid for
you completely skinned me for that information!
that friend of yours just might get killed
if you want to save your "precious someone" take me to them
further talk is pointless, please give me an order
could you be any more of a country bumpkin?!
that was amazing, i've never seen a weapon like that before!
this is not the time to be impressed!
take off your coat, i'll stop the bleeding
whether you can or not and whether you did or not are completely different issues
to me that sight was something overwhelmingly "right"!
mémoire 4: femme fatale - love
i never imagined you'd have degenerated this much!
i'm saying i'm tired of playing with you
just as i thought, fighting monsters is best left to other monsters
why the tears?! this weak attitude?!
you gave yourself something to protect, that's why you're weak
you've grown weak, that's true. however, that very weakness heightens your beauty
you've come to interest me greatly, you know?
what is this throbbing in my chest?
i want to see all your different sides!
from now on i'll love you dearly, i must have all of you, marry me and be mine!!
but remember this: next time, i'll kill you, i'll come to kill you, i swear it!

Behind the Castle walls... lurks an intruder.  someone who isn't meant to be there but is drawn to Blitzillion Castle nonetheless his name is Blitzo Vanitas. as he wonders the desolate corridors. he is suprised to find that he isn't alone. Blitzillion has left his fledgling behind. With a begrudgance.  and the young hermphidte is eager to make new friends.  boundries don't exisist here.  How far will the Hermphidite go to ensnare his very own Omega....  ___________________________________________________ The golden encrusted bath was more like a sauna accented by the golden hued lights of the onyx candlelobras that  decorated the bathroom.  Reflecting within  the magnificent bubbles the floated around the air.  Blitzo stood their shivering in nothing but his boxer shorts. which by the look of the naked serpent standing before would be short lived.  Blitzo vanitas had already been through so much: from his resent capture with Mammon to finding out his sister's soul was still entact. by lying dormant within a doll stuffed to the gills with Loo-loo-land currency.   To using forbidden alchemy to restore his sister and ultimately paying the price. While earning his mates displeasure in the process.   Whereas each demon had given up something precious as memory, Blitz had given up his left eye as payment.  His left eye  had been sealed with magic.  None of them really understood. but standing before his mates as they each glowered down at him as if accusing him. his body had shook and he coulnd't bring himself to look. instead he had opted to run away: taking Eros's bike and leather jacket. the infomous cupid doll and bolting out into the rain.  Striker had left him in the bathroom: left him cold once he knew what he had given up.  Everything he owned and cherrished was strapped to his back.  A tear fell from Blitzo's eye as a slender hand wrapped around his neck. pulling him close almost flush against a warm naked body.  Blitzo flushed as he was drawn back to the present.  Striker nuzzled Blitz as Blitzo closes his eyes melting into the fledglings touch.  tears pricking his eyes. his heart lurches in his chest as the fledgling catches him.  "it'll be alright"  Striker whispers cupping the side of Blitzo's face.  "Forget everything that made you sad, they can't touch you here"  "I've never seen an omega before spoke the snake imp"  "whatever is on your mind I can easily put to rest"  Striker brings Blitzo's head closer to his neck.  "inhale, and reliquish your memories to me"  "soon you won't have a reason to leave"  "relax little one, I won't bite you"  "Shhh, my little one, your safe with me"  "Now let's finish that bath shall we"  Blitzo gulped. his eyes taking on a goldish hue as he obeyed.  Drake and the twin serpents faded from his memory as a single tear fell down his cheek: as the memory

Historic Vanitian Phrases
‘Vanitians are nothing if not ---‘
A joke used by Vanitians, poking fun at the many negative personal traits ascribed to people of the region. The trait may or may not be something actually used to describe Vanitians, and is usually used to downplay an action or for comedy purposes. If you aren’t at least a regular visitor to the area, (though a Vanitian native is ideal), you may be taken seriously, so it can be rude for foreigners.
“Vanitians are nothing if not stubborn.”
“Vanitians are nothing if not bad at gardening.”
‘That’s the stuff of Skarmory nests.’
A thorny or dangerous situation, particularly in relation to personal matters. Based on the fact that many Skarmory build nests out of brambles or thorns. Sometimes there’s the implication that the person will come out better for it, like how a Skarmory chick’s skin will toughen with exposure to the thorns.
“I can’t tell Rebecca that her lover is seeing another woman behind her back without revealing that I also had an affair with him. It’s the stuff of Skarmory nests.”
‘With the strength and unity of a Boariler.’
Historically, a compliment only used to refer to a group of people, particularly an army, that works together flawlessly in their combined goal. Given that Boariler was a national symbol, it was considered no higher honor than to be called this.
“After the cave-in, the miners acted with the strength and unity of a Boariler to rescue those still trapped underground. As a result, no lives were lost.”
‘A Probopass is less invasive.’
A sharp remark to warn someone that they want to know too much. It’s an extension of ‘sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong’, but given Probopass has one large nose and three mini-noses, it takes it a step farther. Can also be used to describe a person.
“Johnathan is nice, but only when he wants to know something. A Probopass is less invasive.”
‘Did you account for Ferrothorn?’
Ferrothorn are infamous for clinging to the walls and ceilings of mines and caves, dropping down on intruders. In Vanitas, particularly among miners and explorers, this was a well-known fact. So essentially, it’s a warning, reminding someone to be aware of a well-known surprise.
“This is an excellent location for a castle, but did you account for Ferrothorn? After all, we’re standing on a flood plain.”

WHATS UP YALL ITS THEORY TIME!!!!!
so this is related to the "fusions" in kingdom hearts, but specifically of ansem and riku and ven and vanitas.
given how soft we see ansem end up being by the end of kh3 i thought that it was possible that being tied to riku for so long might have passed some of riku's light / good nature onto ansem. he seems far less aggressive and invested in the organization and more interested in any and all things related to riku and his motivations. and it makes sense right? if their hearts were connected and so powerful and since ansem was able to influence riku's heart with his its completely understandable for riku to have been able to do the same to ansem, making him a more complicated person by having an "intruding light" within him.
so what about ven and vanitas? they're even more connected than riku and ansem because they're each other. so what comes of their fusion? they were a light and darkness so powerful their clash alone was able to form the literal x-blade.
what if in their clash they traded some of their light and darkness to each other?
its not that far fetched of a thought. though we dont see them much in kh3 its easy to spot differences in their character that arent just from story progression.
ive always found ventus much more mature in kh3 than bbs. partly because of his growth and experience but he also has a bit of a change in demneor that might not come from him. He’s much more subdued and quiet in kh3. Who’s to say Vanitas’ darkness, or vens original darkness, didn’t make its way back to him?
And for Vanitas he seems to be lacking a lot more oomph than he had in bbs in kh3. It’s possible it’s because he was weakened but can you really imagine bbs Vanitas talking with Sora and ven so calmly and openly like that? He wasn’t ever serious and he was much more scary and intimidating but not so much in kh3
I wonder if this is a concept that will ever get touched on and if so what they’ll do to it because it’s very interesting and there’s also terra and Xehanort to consider as well!!!

So I never gotta guess
spotify wrapped writing challenge: vanoé + 11
machi bhasad (bloodywood)
No flag on my bulletproof vest
Talk to my heart so I never gotta guess
“I… totally get you didn’t want me seeing your memories.”
Needless to say, Noé had understood from way before; after all he was already well aware of how it could come off as intruding greatly in someone’s privacy, not to mention the way such an ability wasn’t always pleasant for him either. But after what they had gone through, after knowing what he knew right then… getting such context offered a whole new perspective on why Vanitas wanted to keep his memories just to himself.
“And yet, bet my blood still smells like heaven to you.” They were sitting back to back, but he didn’t need to look to perceive the smugness in him.
“Tsk, it’s not like I can help it.” Because yes, it still did, and maybe knowing it was out of his reach only increased his craving. But, of course, Noé intended to keep ignoring the urge out of respect. And because… well, him being drawn to Vanitas was in no way only physical. “Still, I think it’s crystal clear how I won’t be jumping to you or anything. Just… tell me what I need to know. What I can know.”
“Are you that interested in knowing me?” Instead of cocky, that last question sounded genuinely curious, and even a bit soft.
“Yes.” Noé didn’t even have to think about it. “I am.”

“It’s nothing to be ashamed of. You’re allowed to cry” with Domijeanne? 👁👁
EZZY! I FORGOT THIS WAS IN MY DRAFTS!
anyway! this takes place somewhere in chapter 55 :)
"It's nothing to be ashamed of. You're allowed to cry."
"It's quite delicate, but powerful. Like Dominique herself."
Luca was right, Jeanne thought. She had never seen Dominique look so... exquisite. She was blinding.
Jeanne met Dominique in the dining room once everything had calmed down. Vanitas would be alright -- he was with Noé -- but she... she was alone.
"...Lady Dominque?"
"Domi, please." She took a deep breath and wiped her eyes. "I think we have been through enough by now."
"Domi..." Her name was sweet, like honey. "Are you alright, Domi?"
Domi pulled her shawl closer to her chest. There were dark circles under her eyes, like she hadn't slept in days. Jeanne wouldn't be surprised.
"There's no need to worry about me. How are the others?" Her voice shook. "How are you?"
I am worried about you.
"That was your grandfather, wasn't it?" The Marquis de Sade. Former Marquis. Jeanne knew about him through word alone.
Domi stilled. "Yes, he is."
"What could he want with a child? With Vanitas?" Jeanne did not mean to intrude, she truly didn't, but...
Danger was coming, that Jeanne knew. She did not want to see anyone, much less Domi, hurt.
"I don't know." It was too soon to be asking questions. Domi wouldn't even look at Jeanne -- she stared into space, her eyes glassy with tears.
"I should not have overstepped, I apologize."
Domi shook her head. "No, you're alright. I'm being too emotional-"
"It's nothing to be ashamed of! You're allowed to cry."

KISSES! 64 or 84! (if you want <3)
Okay I have done both in one and also may have gone overboard hehehe
(tw: blood)
She. Just. Wouldn’t. Stay. Still.
Vanitas gritted his teeth as he watched her dart away from another strike. For once, he would like to get a hit in and not have to watch her cartwheel away from every attack. He was getting tired of it, watching her glide away, watching those long beautiful legs move her in ways he could barely fathom.
Wait.
He was shaken so much by that intruding thought that he barely managed to parry her next attack. He was just glad he had his helmet so she wouldn’t have to see his face.
She stared down at him as their blades crossed. She seemed irritated more than anything, like the last thing she expected when wandering Radiant Garden was to fight the likes of him.
If only she was enjoying it as much as he was.
Despite his annoyance at how slippery she was, this fight was a very welcome one after that pathetic match with Ventus. Now, it felt like he was finally being challenged. She was a Master, so of course she would be able to put up a fight. Every spell, every movement was precise. And when her eyes burned as she stared him down, he couldn’t help but grin in glee.
“Is that all you got, Master?”
Her face curled in disgust. Maybe it was from the way he said it, but he was just glad he could get some kind of emotion out of her. She really did look gorgeous glowering at him in contempt like that.
Wait.
She swung at him again when she felt him falter. This time, she managed to strike him along the brow, hard enough that his helmet cracked.
As he felt the sting, all he could do was laugh. That’s it. That’s the sort of fight he wanted.
He watched her head tilt as she noticed the damage. Almost like she was surprised to hit him. He tutted and lifted his hand up, watching as darted backwards as if to get out of the way.
His fingers inspected the crack briefly, before he dismissed his helmet altogether. As it melted away, he kept his eyes trained on her. Now it was her turn to falter. There was no hiding her surprise.
“You’re… human?”
He grinned at that. A drop of blood began trailing down his face from where his helmet cut it.
“Surprised?” he taunted. “Were you just expecting some sort of faceless entity?”
Her guard was still up. He sauntered over to her. Something seemed to have rattled her.
He stopped when a thought occurred to him.
“Oh? Don’t tell me you’re having second thoughts about this.”
Her eyes locked onto his. They still burned with the rage from before, but he could see the doubt lingering within.
He took another step towards her and watched as she took a step back. If she went any further, she would hit the wall of the town square.
That thought made something rise within him. She was on the verge of letting herself get cornered. He grinned even wider.
She stopped with her back to the stone wall, and she seemed almost surprised to feel it there. But her eyes didn’t leave him.
“Why are you doing this?”
Something deflated. He watched her, disappointed to see some of that contempt fading. Was she trying to understand him? Did seeing his face garner him some sympathy?
He stepped closer, close enough that he could strike her with his blade if he wanted to. He hoped she knew that.
Maybe if he did, she would stop looking at him with those wide, beautiful eyes. Maybe her mouth wouldn’t be parted so temptingly. Maybe she would-
Dammit!
He struck out, holding his blade at her neck, not quite hard enough to break the skin. The act caught her off guard, and just that surprised him. He would have thought she would be more careful than that, but something had really disarmed her.
Then he remembered her question.
“Why am I doing this?” he mused. “Because I want to.”
He watched her breathe in. Her hands slowly rose to grip at his blade. There was something peculiar in her eyes. Like she was pleading him.
The grip on his blade faltered, but he regained it the moment he noticed. Maybe not quick enough. She saw him hesitate.
He was still hesitating.
The blood trailed down to his mouth and his tongue darted out to catch it. He watched her eyes follow the movement.
Dammit, stop that!
He needed to think. He needed to remember what he was doing. He was supposed to be there to test her and dispose of her if he found her useless. He wasn’t supposed to be ogling her like this.
She tugged at his weapon, gently like she was worried the slightest movement would set him off. She breathed out, and he wondered when he got close enough to hear it.
When she bit at her bottom lip, something in him snapped. He dismissed his weapon, instead reaching out to restrain both her hands against the wall. She gasped in surprise, and he could feel her starting to struggle. He leant his body into hers to slow her movements.
Her eyes were burning again. Something hot pulsed within him.
“Well,” he began, licking his lips again. “Wasn’t that careless of you, Master Aqua.”
She stiffened underneath him. Her eyes wouldn’t leave his. It was like they were glaring at him in warning.
But she hadn’t pushed him away. If anything, they were daring him to get closer.
“Who are you?”
She may have tried to keep her voice steady, but he could hear how frazzled she was. He grinned at her, making sure he showed his teeth.
“Your worst nightmare.”
Her eyes narrowed at his response. Seeing that expression on her face was delicious. He wanted nothing more than to devour it. He wanted to steal the breath from her chest, wanted to leave her gasping and begging. Something ached beneath his skin, and he began contemplating how to get her to alleviate it.
She still wasn’t trying to break out. He knew she could. Maybe she was just waiting for the right moment. Her glare wouldn’t let up, and all it did was rile him up more.
He stared into her eyes, hoping she could see how much this whole thing amused him. There was a nagging voice telling him he should kill her while she’s vulnerable, but he made sure it shut up for a while. He could take his time with her. She didn’t really seem to be in a rush to fight back anyway.
Yeah. Why was that?
Her glare wouldn’t let up, but she hadn’t moved away. The only way he knew this affected her at all was that stare.
Then she opened her mouth, and his eyes flicked to that instead. He heard the words tumble out.
“Well? What are you waiting for?”
That was an excellent question. And one he didn’t feel like answering with words.
He surged forward, capturing her lips in his own. She froze underneath him, and just as he thought she would finally fight back, she instead started to move her own mouth against his. He barely had time to focus on how unexpected that was before he felt himself start to be consumed by the kiss.
The taste of blood still lingered in his mouth and knowing that she probably tasted it too was maddening. His tongue darted out and prodded at her lips. He felt her groan before opening her mouth and letting him inside. She was far too good to him.
His head was spinning. He knew he should pull away, not just to catch his breath, but to finish what he started. What he was supposed to do. But the longer this particular battle went on, the less he felt inclined to accomplish his original task.
She broke apart on her own finally, moving her head back as far as she could. Her chest rose and fell from the force of her breathing. Her cheeks were painted a mouth-watering rosy colour.
And her eyes. They still burned, but it was with something other than rage. Maybe there was a similar burning in his own gaze.
He cracked a grin, before leaning in close to her again.
“Well, that was fun,” he murmured at her. “We should fight like this again sometime.”
Before she could respond, he let go of her wrists and jumped away from her. There would be plenty of time to go after her again.
She glanced over at him as he summoned a corridor. She rubbed at her wrists, and the flushed look on her face had yet to vanish.
He winked at her before summoning his helmet again and disappearing through the corridor. It was better to keep her waiting after all.
And she was definitely worth the wait.

[DA+KH] Let Down Your Guard for Me (Just This Once)
Summary: An unofficial part of @chibi-mushroom‘s Dragon Age AU for the Kingdom Hearts series, in which Ventus invites Sabrina somewhere special for one-on-one sparring practice. Inspired by something that happened in chapter 36 of Dragon Age: Wayfinder.
Rating: K+ (because DesireDemon!Vanitas is a very angry critic)
Word count: 3,862 words
If you liked this story, please reblog!
---
The conspicuous sounds of Ventus grunting is what initially caught Sabrina’s attention. How she was able to hear it when he ended up being on the other end of Redcliffe Castle was beyond her. She was quite disappointed to find that he was in the training room. Training sword in hand, he was giving some potshots at a straw filled dummy. The bard, curious to see how long it would take for him to notice her, simply laid against the entryway in amusement.
He didn't take as long to notice her as she first assumed, however. His reaction at her being there was just as great in the meantime. Ven had caught her out of the corner of his eye. At first, he just as easily dismissed the intruder, since they were just staying at the door. It was when he noticed the light purple cotton blouse that he ceased his movements. He had turned completely around before finding himself shocked at Sabrina's presence.
“Sabri-” Ven exclaimed, his voice reaching a pitch so high that his voice cracked. He quickly covered it with a cough before trying again. “Sabrina. What are you doing here?”
“In the castle or in the room?” she replied with a wicked grin. “Because that first one shouldn't be a surprise. I sleep with you.”
The young man let out a nervous chuckle as he rubbed the back of his neck. Beads of sweat reminded him of just how hard he had made himself work. Did he look like he had given himself an intense workout? Oh Maker, how much did he stink? Would Sabrina even notice? She didn't seem to act like it was noticeable at the moment. Instead, the bard casually strode into the room and almost to his side. His face started to heat up the closer she was. Whether it was from embarrassment or being flustered was a little beyond him at the moment.
“Let me see your sword.” she requested, holding her hand out to him. Admittedly, Ven had to do a double take. His confusion immediately made her groan in disgust. She amended her previous statement with an annoyed, “The sword in your hand, you moron. The training sword.”
“Oh!” Ven realized -just as easily feeling dumb for his initial thought- before giving the sword to her.
Sabrina gave one last judgmental raise of her eyebrow being looking over the training sword more carefully. She held the wooden sword with both hands, occasionally taking a few test swings out of amusement. Ven simply watched as she let out a small hum of interest. In a thoughtful tone, she mused, “You've always held your swords in reverse.”
Confused, Ven asked, “What makes you say that?”
Sabrina moved closer to him again, holding the sword up so they could better examine its craftsmanship.
“Your practice sword has a special guard.” she informed him. She even bothered to run a finger along said guard to help him see it. “It's better designed to block incoming blows.”
After saying this, she picked up Ven's hand so he could take the sword back. Although the sword was back into Ven's possession, the two did not step away from each other. The air had become a bit heavier as they lingered there. Ven, for one, wanted to say something but didn't know what. Why was carrying on a conversation so hard? He never had this problem when he and Terra would seek trouble together. All they had to do was mention sparring each other, and they'd grab the training swords to head out to...
“I want to take you somewhere.” the young man blurted.
Sabrina looked at him. Her fingers instinctively going for her rabbit shaped mask- even present when she wasn't wearing it on her face, it clipped to a string that she tied around her waist. Ven immediately stopped her by placing his hand on hers. The bard flinched slightly at the unexpected touch, but didn't move him. Instead, she looked up at him with a certain darkness in her eyes.
Ven unintentionally gulped before quickly telling her, “You won't need your mask where we're going. Promise.”
She raised an eyebrow at him, but in seeing his honesty, she relented.
“Fine.” she agreed. “But at least let me put it in my room.”
Ven quickly gave her an eager nod. “Meet me at the back gates.”
“The back gates?” she repeated. “I… Whatever. Fine. I’ll meet you at the back gates in 10 minutes.”
“You won't regret it, I promise!” Ven eagerly told her, almost taking her hand. He was impressed by his own refrain, actually.
Sabrina still looked him over- as if she still needed some reason to bail out of the situation. They both knew she couldn't find a good excuse for this, though. When she finally turned to go put her mask away, Ven's heart was already pounding in his chest. Even if they were just going to get sweaty all over again, ten minutes was enough time to take a quick bath. Right?
. . .
It was always suspicious when Vanitas was silent for long periods of time. Even more so when Ventus's heart fluttered at the thought of Sabrina's presence. Today the desire demon was quiet- not that Ven was going to ruin that quiet. He needed all of his thoughts to belong to himself. Taking Sabrina to this spot was as important as remembering which spoon to use during a formal dinner. Maybe the demon knew this was important, so he was minding his own business for once? Didn't seem right, but Ven wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
“Where are we even going?” Sabrina asked. She had arrived at exactly the ten minute mark. Of course she would.
“Do you trust me?” Ven just as easily questioned, offering his hand out to her. He was answered with a skeptic raise of her eyebrow.
“For now.” she replied as she took his hand. The young man held her hand tight as he started to lead them away from the castle.
Ven held a brisk pace as he lead them around the town and to a wooded area. The sounds of the town disappeared the further they went, and eventually the sounds of gentle waves hitting the shore became more prominent. Ven let go of Sabrina's hand when the woods finally dispersed to a small beach facing Lake Calenhad. A small chill coming off the lake sent goosebumps up Ven's skin. He turned back to Sabrina to take careful notice of her expression. She didn't look very impressed- her eyes drifting to the sand, taking note that it was clear of driftwood.
“Terra and I used to come here when we were younger.” Ventus then explained. He moved closer to where the sand met the lake water just to subtly guide Sabrina out of the woods some more. “He found it one day after getting mad at Dad. After awhile, it became a place where we would spar each other for fun. I was… I was wondering if we could spar too...”
“Did you bring another practice sword, then?”
It was the bluntness of her question that caught Ven off guard. “H-huh?” he fumbled, looking back at her with an almost fearful expression.
“Figures.” she grumbled with a roll of her eyes. Placing a hand on her hip, Sabrina looked over the area before tilting her head at something. Ven wasn't quite paying attention. He was absently rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment.
“Really didn't think that through, huh?” he mused to himself. “We should head back.”
“No,” Sabrina then all but snapped at him. “Just give me a minute.”
At this, Ven looked up. Sabrina had already ventured by the trees bordering the area, apparently looking for something. The mage gave her a curious look as she went over some fallen limbs and branches.
“Here,” she noted before bending down to pick up a branch almost as long as her body and half the width of her arm. “This will do for now.”
“You mean you do want to spar with me?”
“We're already out here, aren't we?” came the callous reply. “Might as well make it productive.”
Ven watched as she knocked some excess dirt off, and even stripped the bark in certain places. For a moment, he wondered if he had ever seen her wield different weapons before. Let alone something like a sword, or fighting staff as she was going to treat this branch.
“I thought you used knives?” he wondered.
Sabrina just let out a little hum as she tested the staff in her hands. “A bard is trained in many things.” she claimed. “Like various weapons, seduction, potions, and-”
Sabrina got cut off when Ven attempted to attack her with his wooden sword. Her reaction time was just skilled enough that she blocked it with the staff. Just barely.
“And how not to gloat when the enemy is also armed?” Ven teased, pressing up against her a bit more just to playfully grin at her.
Sabrina's momentary look of bewilderment became a boastful smirk. “Something like that.” she agreed as she pushed him off. Ven let out a small laugh as he moved away from her a bit. They needed a better area for their practice-  the main beach would have the space.
They were both incredibly confident as they got ready. Ven casually spun his sword with a single hand, his heart almost pounding in his ears as the grin on his face got wider. His cheeks were going to hurt later, and he didn't care one ounce. Sabrina stood tall as she adjusted herself for the fight. (And yes, he did notice that her foot was pointed when she brought one leg around to adjust her stance- assuming that little movement wasn't just to distract him.) She held her makeshift staff with enough certainty, you almost would have assumed that it was her weapon of choice. Sabrina was not a mage, though, and she certainly didn't plan on using it to channel magic.
“Whose count do we start on?” Ven asked. He couldn't even hide the excitement in his voice at the question. Something Sabrina countered with a firm smirk of her own.
“Mine.” she decided before lunging at him. Ven suspected as much, and was easily able to get out of the way. A laugh erupted from his lips as they continued to fight. Nothing else mattered at the moment- just him, her, and the sound of their wooden weapons knocking against each other.
. . .
Aqua needed an excuse to leave the castle for a moment. She had no sense of envy for the arl and arlessa- politics had never been the Hero of Ferelden's strong point. At least she was able to leave if the hustle and bustle served to be too much. Or, even use the distraction of finding Ven, who was no longer in the training room and apparently not even in the castle anymore either. He had a meeting to go to soon, and his random disappearance would probably be a cause for concern.
She wasn't going to lie about it, but Aqua had been worried at first. It wasn't until she realized that someone else hadn't been seen in the castle for awhile that she gained a certain hunch. A small trip to the training room helped support the theory. Now it was only a matter of where they went. It came to Aqua with a sudden realization- one that she was just as easily embarrassed about. Thinking on it more, it seemed only natural that he would take her there. After all, Terra had done the same with Aqua not too long ago.
“Have you seen Ven?” Aqua heard Terra ask her just as she was about to leave the castle. The Hero of Ferelden stopped just to look at her boyfriend.
“I was just about to go get him.” she affirmed. “Would you like to join me? I'm not quite familiar with the path yet.”
Terra raised an eyebrow, but didn't ask where she thought Ven was. Considering she made it seem like he would know where they were going anyway, he instead gave her a solemn nod of his head. Aqua beamed in satisfaction and gestured for them to walk together.
The woods had become more dense since the Fifth Blight. The canopy of the trees almost blocking out the sunlight as they moved away from the village. Sticks and small branches that had fallen out of the trees had also covered the ground- not quite big enough to be kindling, but too small to be used for much else than potential bird's nest supplies. It didn't take long for the duo to hear the sounds of some fight up ahead. From the sound of it, it seemed like wooden weapon against wooden weapon as the two duelists made snappy remarks at the other. Terra and Aqua recognized both voices at the same time.
“Not a bad parry.”
“I can do better. Watch this!”
“Oh, so close. So very, very close- yet so very far, far away.”
“Hmph. Maybe we should call a draw. You're not even trying.”
“Giving up already? It's not my fault you're easy to read, sweetie.”
Hearing them made Terra walk faster. He stopped when he and Aqua were close enough to see the other duo, but far enough away that they could still hide behind several trees. Aqua put a hand on him to guide him over a bit. She already knew he wasn't going to like this, so at the very least she could try to keep him out of sight for a bit longer.
“What is he doing here with her?” Terra questioned. His expression was darkening as his gaze locked onto Ventus and Sabrina. Most of it was targeted at the latter.
“For the same reason you brought me here, I'd guess.” Aqua calmly replied, even putting her hands behind her back. “He's getting her to open up. We can't interrupt them now, or they may never have this opportunity again.”
Terra looked at Aqua like she had gained another head.
“This is ridiculous.” he asserted. “Ven has other things he needs to-”
Terra was cut off when Aqua grabbed him by the collar, forcing the two of them to stand fairly close to each other. A mocking grin was etched on her lips as she told him, “Nobody interrupted us.”
Terra's face immediately lit up in a deep scarlet. He took several steps away from Aqua while refusing to look at her.
“I'll find Tidus and tell him that Ven is busy.” he grumbled under his breath. Aqua only smiled.
“Yes you will.” she agreed. Terra gave her a stiff nod before leaving. She laughed at him before turning her attention back to Ventus and Sabrina.
It was apparent that Ven was not used to fighting with a sword after so long. Sure, you could tell that he had fought with one in the past, but it was not at a level able to defend him in an actual battle. However, as Aqua observed with a tilt of her head, Sabrina was not showing the best of confidences with her two handed staff either. Of course, she had always been a more offense fighter than defense. There were small moments where Sabrina tried to be direct, only for her to leave an opening for Ven to exploit. It was equal to the times when Ven tried to prepare a spell, but remembered that he wouldn't use them- a small moment of hesitation that lead to a great advantage.
But it was their smiles that had Aqua's full attention. She couldn't see them well from here, however she could almost hear it in their voices as they bantered back and forth. Hearing Ven enjoy himself wasn't much different than usual. Hearing Sabrina with genuine amusement in her voice had been the more shocking discovery. It was in thinking that Ven was lucky enough to see this side of Sabrina, Aqua decided to quietly make her leave. She did make note of the sun's position, wondering how long it would take for the two to come back to the castle. The smile on her face wouldn't leave, no matter how hard she tried. It was great seeing the odd couple be so happy.
. . .
They never knew that they had gained onlookers for a few minutes. Even after Terra and Aqua left, Sabrina and Ven kept going at each other. Their faces were flushed from exertion, and their breaths came out heavy and shallow. But they kept going. Neither one wanting to give up the high they had in this form of intimacy. They weren't even keeping track of what they were saying to each other either. Words spilled out of their mouths that could have been flirting, or insults, or appreciation, and they would have forgotten their meanings almost instantly.
Their draw came without warning. It only took one last block that made the two pause. Ven's focus had immediately gone to Sabrina's eyes. Almost half lidded from her own exhaustion, they were trained to where his sword met her staff. If she was looking at anything else (anything lower), then the future arl had no way of knowing. He took a very careful step forward, bringing them almost chest to chest, and leading Sabrina to look up at him.
He almost kissed her, right then and there. As if he truly needed a reminder of how much he loved her.
“We work well together.” he managed to husk out. Sabrina simply looked at him. A certain sense of vulnerability and mutual attraction coming through that he'd only seen on her in the dark. It was even more beautiful in the day. Amazing, even.
“We do.” she agreed, not quite aware of her saying it.
But after this declaration, the tone started to become more somber. The weight of what they really meant coming down on them like a heavy fog. The gaze they soon gave each other measured an equal heartbreak. Ven moved forward just a bit more, closing the distance between their lips. Sabrina reacted by tilted her head up a bit, but didn't move much further than what they were.
“Please stay with us.” Ven then whispered.
“I… I don't know if I can.” she said. Her voice even more timid than his. “I only stayed as long as I did the first time because...” She trailed off, looking away from him as she took a few steps back. The corners of her mouth turned into a distressed frown. Ven only watched her- too afraid that any wrong movement would make her turn away. Her conflict on the situation was obvious. She couldn't easily find a way out of the situation- she felt trapped.
“This was a mistake.” Sabrina decided with a shake of her head. She immediately dropped the staff, turning away to leave. Ven was caught shaking his own head as well.
“N-no, wait!” he called out, not expecting it to work.
To his surprise, it did. Not knowing how much longer he had before she left for good, Ventus quickly tried to give her a speech from the heart.
“Sabrina, I love you. I love you so much that I don't even know how to express it. I don't know… I don't know how to say it so you know it too. So that you're sure that I'm telling the truth. And you know I can't just go reverse psychology on you because you'd still take it at face value. What do I need to do, Sabrina? What do I need to do to make sure you know that I love you?”
That was when Sabrina turned her body back toward him. She still refused to look him in the eye. She wanted to say something, but all words seemed to fail her. Instead, she just looked up at him with an expression so vulnerable that no other person would be able to see later. That was when he understood. Maybe not everything, but enough.
Ven used his hand to cup the side of her face, his thumb gently outlining her cheek. Sabrina cautiously leaned in to the embrace, placing one of her hands at his wrist. She didn't attempt to remove his hand- she didn't want to.
“I love you,” Ven once more said, almost afraid to say it, as he pulled them in for a small kiss.
The kiss had been bittersweet. At the same time, it bore a lot more affection than when they were actually heated. Pulling away had been the hardest thing to do.
“I'd rather you become an arl than Grey Warden.” Sabrina softly admitted. “But if you take on a political spouse, they have to fit my criteria before you ever dream of putting a ring on their finger. Got it?”
“I wouldn't have it any other way.” Ven smiled. Sabrina only offered a stiff nod. Her usual attitude was slowly returning- he could tell by the way she held herself. Her chest was lifting, her back a bit straighter, and any vulnerability was taken away to a hard callousness.
“I plan on staying in Ferelden until I receive word from Orlais. But I don't want to stay sitting at the castle. I need something to do.”
“You were still looking for things of your mother's, right?” Ven offered. A hand reaching behind his neck to absently rub it. “Maybe I can scout around for you. If there's a lead, we could go together to find it?”
In one last show of true emotion, Sabrina's eyes widened before her signature scowl came into play.
“I wouldn't mind that.” she agreed. The corner of her mouth twitched before adding, “Thank you.”
Ven offered her a small smile. She took it as a sign to leave. Her head was once more cast down as she went back through the trees.
'3 stars.'
Hearing the demon's voice in his head after so long nearly gave Ven a jolt.
'What?' the young man mentally replied, starting the trek back to the castle as well.
'I give this episode 3 stars. Good tension, but not a lot of build up between points. What even was that resolution? Did the writers not know how to end the story?'
'You do know that I have no idea what you're talking about, don’t you?'
'You're not the one that needs to.' Vanitas huffed. 'Could you guys do that thing were you take a bath and end up in bed after? I like that. I need it after this mess. You two really need to learn to start fucking it out when the tension's high, not bait switching it with pity. Sure, it gives Wabi-Sabi some development, but it train wrecks the whole mood. How hard is it just to get your shit together?'
Ventus couldn't help but roll his eyes. Nice to know that someone had faith in their relationship.

---
Just say it, say those five words and everything will be okay.
Swallowing against his dry throat, Noé fought tooth and nail against the rapid hammering of his heart against his chest. He forced a chuckle past his lips as he plastered a half-smile on his face. “I still don’t like you,” he said, and then finished whatever it was he wanted to say.
Vanitas would always turn his head away, gazing into the distance with a forlorn look in his eyes and an arm wrapped around his chest. His silence revealed everything Noé needed to know: their relationship had been on thin ice since the start. However, Noé had started to notice the splinters as of late.
That’s the way every encounter with Vanitas that went even slightly below the surface would go. There had been no exceptions to this formula. In the back of his mind, Noé feared what would happen should he choose not to say those five words, those words Vanitas implicitly demanded he say as security against his worst nightmare.
~ ~ ~
One night, as Vanitas sat on the ledge of the bell tower, Noé felt the divide between them lengthen with each painful pulse, the agony wracking against his bones as he stood beside him yet not with him. While Vanitas had gone to this spot for lonesome solace, to gaze at the city as the sun spilled beyond the horizon, Noé had merely followed him like a moth drawn to flame. And as Vanitas drummed his fingers on the cement platform, he began to worry he had overstayed his welcome.
“You’re intruding,” Vanitas said, his words slicing through the stiff air between them.
“I’m sorry,” Noé murmured as his gaze fell to his shoes. Shoving his hands into his pockets, he struggled to steady his breath as the drum of Vanitas’ clawed gloves grated against his ears.
Vanitas threw the vampire a sidelong glare, cocking a brow as he watched him incredulously. “Huh? Since when have you been sorry for intruding my space?”
Biting the inside of his lip, the least he could do was keep himself from getting flustered in front of him. “Look, I wanted to talk to you,” he started, the words creeping up from his throat.
“He’ll never know how you feel unless you tell him.”
It was the same advice he’d given Jean-Jacques at Gévaudan, and yet Noé found himself struggling to heed it. This was so much more difficult than he had anticipated...
“Spit it out then,” Vanitas snapped.
“Oh no, this is a bad time, isn’t it? He’s already angry with me and I haven’t even spoken yet!”
“I was thinking about how fickle life is, and how, if things had been different, it would have been you I had fought back at Gévaudan. I just wanted to say that... I’m glad the man I met on the airship that night called himself a Vampire Specialist and not a Chasseur,” he said, the words gushing out of him with more intensity than he had intended. Chancing a glance down at him, Noé was met with piercingly blue eyes staring back at him. As the last rays of sunlight illuminated his features in a golden glow, Vanitas held Noé’s violet gaze with anticipation. “And I wanted to say that I—”
“Humans are disgusting creatures.”
The words caught in his throat, and he stammered as the words jumbled in his head.
“The thought of someone being in love with someone as horrible as me... it’s absolutely vile!”
Vanitas’ countenance shifted, and as he stood to better meet Noé’s floundering form, his contempt faded away. His heartbeat stopped, frozen in his chest as the icy hand of fear crept up his spine. This wasn’t normal for Noé.
“What’s wrong?”
Snapping back into reality, Noé couldn’t tear his eyes from Vanitas as he watched with bated breath to hear what he had to say. He was transfixed by the beauty of the man before him, and the worry and agony painted across his visage was enough to tug his heart from his chest.
“W-Well, I,” he trailed, a hot blush rising to his features.
“What is it?!”
The desperation in his voice hurt Noé more than he wanted to admit, and it only served as a catalyst to free the words from the barrier of his tongue.
“I-I’m in love with you, Vanitas!”
The silence.
The silence was more than he could bear. It was agonizing, it was torture, it was—
“No you don’t.”
“What?” Who was he to say that? “Yes I do!”
“No, you don’t!” Vanitas bellowed, the gentleness and worry from his previous mask slipping away. “That’s impossible, it’s not true, you do not love me. You don’t even know what love is.”
Of all the emotions Noé thought he would feel if this were to happen, he didn’t expect for irritation to be at the forefront. Without hesitation, he reached out for Vanitas, grabbed his shoulders, and—right as Vanitas attempted to argue—kissed him.
Taken utterly by surprise, Vanitas whimpered against Noé’s warm lips, eyes wide and hands raised as Noé’s grip loosened. As his thumb caressed his cloaked shoulder, Vanitas was struck by a hot feeling behind his ribs. What was this feeling? What had Noé done to his senses? Did he like this?
His lips quivered, unchecked emotions rising to the surface as he clenched his muscles and pushed Noé backwards. Their lips separated with a smack, and his heart only throbbed harder.
“No you fucking don’t!”
Noé sucked in a deep breath, the corners of his lips tugging down despite the bright flush that still adorned his cheeks. His brows furrowed as Vanitas shouted.
“That’s...That’s... That’s just not possible! Humans and vampires are foul, loathsome, disgusting, wretched creatures, and I’m the worst of them all—there’s no way anyone would fall for me, and if they did, it would only mean that they’re even more horrible for thinking I’m—for thinking I’m—!” He sputtered, the words escaping him before he could stop it, the growl in his tone burning its way through each word before screeching to a halt. He couldn’t breathe. “You’re absolutely abhorrent, Noé.”
Each word serrated Noé like a knife until he was nothing more than a bleeding creature before him. His eyes stung with bitter tears, and his throat tightened painfully as he tried and failed to catch his breath.
“Okay,” Noé whispered, unable to speak any louder.
Gritting his teeth, Vanitas turned on his heels and jumped from the tower to the nearest rooftop, nearly losing his footing as he ran over the shingles as fast as his legs would carry him. Noé merely watched as he made his escape, unable to move his body to follow him. Oh, how he wanted to follow him—but something told him we wouldn’t like that. So, he resigned to letting him run.
Throwing himself through the hotel window, Vanitas slammed with shutters closed and drew the curtains tightly before making his way to the entrance and bolting the door shut, locking the chain for good measure, and finally making a beeline to the bathroom. He wasn’t a messy crier, truly, but this entire experience was foreign to him. Sliding down the wall to collapse on the cold floor, Vanitas curled his legs against his chest and wrapped his arms around himself, sobs beginning to wrack his frame.
And as Noé leaned against the brick pillar at his back, and as his own tears began to overflow, he began to wonder if he just had his heart broken.

Masquaerade
Here we have a scene from the most likely first chapter of “Vanitas Vanitatum” and one of the at least 3 first meetings between our two protagonists. Enjoy!
Nefele’s night would have been perfect if the room wasn’t so hot and crowdie. One would think the Stellarion’s family ball would be a more exclusive affair, but the list of guests had been bigger than she had expected.
There was one unexpected guest she had been very happy to see in attendance. Her parents wouldn’t approve if they knew Xavier was here, which was why she appreciated his discretion. He had arrived with only two of his soldiers, who were married anyway and as such passed as a couple in the crowd. Their clothes were also in the traditional style of the Harenish upper middle class.
She was very grateful she had chosen her birthday celebration to be a masquerade. She could dance all night with Xavier with no one the wiser. He had chosen a simple black mask adorned with lace that covered most of his face.
“You look positively glowing tonight, my princess. I love you in red, it makes your smile shine brighter than the sun. What does the poem say? Take away my sight, but let me bath in my lady’s light. ”
Nefele let the praise engulf her like the waves of the ocean. She loved this side of him, the dreaded General Serafium, waxing poetry just for her. Xavier was not a person who liked reading, let alone reciting poetry nor a man of many words, but he always had something sweet to say to her and her alone.
“I am not a princess. You know we have no such thing in Harena. Not anymore.”
“Not yet, you mean, my love. You do know that you will be my princess soon.”
Nefele chewed her lower lip, trying not to start the old argument again. Xavier never seemed to understand that she could not marry him. She could be with him, from time to time, when their paths crossed. After all, romantic attachments were hardly forbidden for Shadow Priestesses. In fact, they were encouraged as long as marriage or children did not happen. After all, there should be nothing to distract them from their sacred duty.
“Xavier, you know I cannot run away from my destiny. I do not want to run away. I chose this. I intend to honor my promise.”
Her handsome prince simply scoffed. He always did that when she spoke of her future as a Priestess.
“Choice, there was no such thing. A little girl desperate for love and approval made that choice, not you. Because her parents couldn’t wait getting rid of her.”
Do not cry. This is your birthday, you cannot cry.
“You know it is not true. I was twelve when I decided I will join the Order. I knew what I was getting into. And you have no right to berate me. I did offer to run away with you once and do you remember what you said..”
“Nefele!”
His tone was biting, a warning. But she had never been good at listening to authority.
“That’s right, nothing. You said nothing, you only laughed in my face. You will never leave your country and your army. Not even for me.”
“That’s different. My king is my cousin, the soldiers are my family, I cannot leave my family behind.”
“And the Priestesses are mine. So now we know where we stand.”
The dance ended right that moment and Xavier tossed her aside angrily. Instead of picking a new partner for the next dance – she knew from experience her prince will need time to calm down – she went on one of the balconies for some fresh air. She was tired of arguing with everyone, even the one person she had thought understood her completely. Maybe that was the problem, she and Xavier were just too similar.
“Excuse me, mareani, but I think your bracelet fell off.”
The unexpected intruder startled her from her thoughts. At first she thought Xavier had came after her -a very uncharacteristic gesture for him- the voice was just too much like his. But he would have never called her by a courtesy title. Turning around, she was surprised – or maybe unsurprised?- to see that the stranger even looked like Xavier. He was just as tall and he had the same golden-blond hair that Nefele knew from experience were even softer than they looked. He even were a similar outfit, a dark blue robe over white pants. But his was not tied in the front, letting Nefele see the white shirt underneath, that looked too cheap for a man who was a guest at her birthday ball. There however two startling differences from Xavier: this man were a silver mask that covered his entire face and he was young, so much younger than Xavier. In fact, he looked to be around Nefele’s own age.
The girl forced herself not to stare at him. The last thing she wanted to do is be rude to the man that was doing her a favor. Sure enough, in his left hand he was holding the thin gold bracelet that Harmony had gifted her the day before.
“Thank you, maren. I would have hated to lose it. It was a gift from a dear friend.”
Nefele could not see his face, but she could swear the stranger was smiling. She put her hand forward, wanting to take the bracelet from him, but he surprised her by tying it himself to her wrist.
“Here, now it will not fall off again. If I am not to forward, would the lady join me on the dancefloor? I would hate for someone so graceful to spend the night alone.”
This time, Nefele could not suppress a shiver. His voice had had a certain nervousness, but he lost it quickly as he talked. And he sounded even more like Xavier.
“Who are you?”
The question escaped from her lips before she could even process it. She felt her face heat up from embarrassment. But her mystery man didn’t look offended. In fact, his amusement was almost palpable.
“Join me if you want to find out. I bet it would drive your lover crazy to see you with another man.”
Nefele did not flinch at the world lover, she had no reason to. Her heart sped up in alarm. How could a complete stranger call Xavier that with such confidence? Nobody knew, it was her most well-kept secret, yet he took one look at her and he was reading her like an open book. She felt angry and powerless at the same time.
“The last thing I want to do is to dance with you, my lord.”
She added the title mockingly, as it was clear he was of no such standing. She expected him to have a biting reply of his own -mostly because Xavier would have and her prince and this stranger were now irrevocably linked in her mind-but he kept surprising her and grabbed her right hand, the one he had put the bracelet on.
“Believe me, Mareani Nefele, there are a million other things I would rather do than be here with you, but destiny has thrown us together for better or worse. Let us not be enemies yet.”
He had used her name. Oh, this was hardly the most unexpected thing he had done all evening. Plenty of the guests that knew her had recognized her easily even if Nefele had chosen a masquerade, in the hopes she could pass unnoticed at her own party if people didn’t pay too much attention. But this stranger did not know her. Should not know her and yet she felt like he was inside her head, under her skin. With a strong pull, she released her hand from his grasp and ran inside, trying to control her breathing.

The Lost Princess Chapter 67
Warnings: still don’t know
Rating: SFW
Tumblr media
You and the others arrived in what looked like a bedroom and all of the objects looked huge.
“What in the world?” Sora asked as he passed an equally oversized xylophone and soccer ball.
“Where are we?” you asked. Vanitas looked up to the larger-than-life bedside table and realized...
“Oh my gosh! Have we been shrunk?! And...and look at us!” he said. You all looked at yourselves, a similar figure though with considerably more plastic.
“You know what the magic is for. We have to protect the world order!” Donald said.
“Border?” Rumi asked.
“‘Order’!”
“No one can understand you, chicken,” Roxy said.
“I’m not a chicken!” Something to the left caught Goofy's eye.
“Gawrsh...” he said. You and the others looked over. “Who's gonna protect the order from them?”
“Heartless!” you and the others said. You all summoned your weapons and ran at the Heartless.
“Okay. We go on three. One, two...” Woody said. Buzz's wings opened suddenly when he saw you and the others arrive.
“Wait!” he said. Rex, already at a running start, almost fell off the bed.
“What are you doing?!” Woody asked. Buzz directed Woody's gaze back to the floor.
“Who are those guys?” Woody asked. You and the others took out all the Heartless as the toy gang made their way to the wooden floor.
“Are they new?” Hamm asked.
“Wait! Ah-- Ah-- You look familiar!” Rex said. He shoved past the rest of them toward a confused Sora. “I know this. You're, uh, you're, uhhh...”
“Yozora!” Hamm said.
“Huh? My name's Sora.” A red dot appeared on Sora's chest as Buzz stood on alert.
“Stay back! For all we know, the intruders sent them,” Buzz said. Rex excitedly tackled Sora.
“Yozora!” he said.
“Slow down there, Rex. We don't know them,” Woody said.
“But we can trust them. They're the number-one-selling heroes in the country!”
“Yeah, Andy's mom must've bought 'em for him,” Hamm said. Rex shook Sora's hand as Buzz continued staying his distance, walking around you all in a circle.
“Hamm's right. Did you see how easily they took care of the intruders? I bet they're here to figure out why all our friends have gone missing, and why Buzz's laser started actually laser-ing...and all the weird stuff that's been going on,” Rex said. Buzz stared at the laser gun on his arm. “I mean, that's what heroes do, right?”
“Let's not jump to conclusions,” Buzz said.
“Hmm...” Woody said.
“Gotta be smart, Woody.” Woody casually walked up to Sora, surprising Buzz.
“So, you're...Andy's new toys?” he asked.
“Toys?” you and the others asked.
“You sure did a number on those intruders.”
“Those are the Heartless,” Goofy said.
“The bad guys!” Donald said.
“There’s also these creatures called Negaverses. Super dangerous,” Rumi said as she played with one of the bunny ears on her hood.
“We've been fighting against those ‘intruders’ for a while,” you said.
“I knew it!” Rex said. Hamm chuckled.
“Hmm... Okay,” Woody said.
“Huh?” Buzz asked.
“In that case, you're all right by me. My name's Woody. Put 'er there.” He offered a hand and Sora shook it.
“Hey,” Sora said.
“Now hold on,” Buzz said.
“I'm Sora--”
“Yozora!” Rex said over excitedly. He got forlorn looks from everyone and joined the rest of Andy's toys.
“Actually, my name's Sora...”
“I’m (Y/N) and that’s my brother Vanitas over there.”
“‘Sup?” Vanitas said.
“I’m Yui and this is my twin sister Roxy.”
“I’m Rumi.”
“And I'm Donald.”
“I'm Goofy.”
“And I'm...Buzz Lightyear.”
“Call me Hamm. It's a real honor.”
“And I'm Rex! I'm your biggest fan. In fact, I've been playing your game for months now. And I've already gotten you all the way up to LV 47. But that Bahamut boss is really tough. Slinky and I can't figure out how to beat him.” The Green Army Men walked up to you and the group. “Oh, I wish Slinky and the others were here. They'd be so happy to meet you!”
“All troops at attention, sir!” Sarge said. The Army Men saluted and you and the others returned it. A rolling sound caught your attention and your heard a squeak as the three Little Green Men coasted toward you on Andy's skateboard.
“Weeee!” they said. You and the others leaped out of the way. After leaving the skateboard, the toy aliens waddled over to Donald, their eyes blinking individually.
“Strangers,” one of them said.
“From the outside,” another said.
“Welcome,” another said. Rumi squealed and tried to hold one in her arms.
“They're all toys? So that's why we look the way we do,” Vanitas said. He saw Buzz walking towards him and Sora as the aliens go on their way.
“Excuse me. You said that you've battled those intruders before. Tell us where and why,” Buzz said.
“Oh... Well, uh...we are--” Sora said.
“Order!” Donald said to him. Sora covered his mouth, making Vanitas snort and roll his eyes.
“Well? You must have come from somewhere,” Buzz said. Hamm agreed while Woody walked over.
“Take it easy, Buzz. What matters is that they got those intruders out of our way--for at least a little while. No need to interrogate them,” Woody said.
“Yeah, Buzz!” Rex said.
“Woody's right,” Hamm said.
“Noted. But still...” Buzz said.
“Oi. Have those ‘intruders’--the Heartless--been a problem around here?” Roxy said.
“No, they just showed up a little while ago,” Woody said.
“In fact, those ‘Heartless’ materialized...right after our friends up and vanished,” Buzz said.
“You don't think...” Donald said to Goofy.
“Well, gee. It can't just be a coincidence,” Goofy replied. Sora nodded and Woody gazed up at the window over Andy's desk.
“It wasn't always this lonely. One day we woke up, and we were the only toys left here. Nobody's heard from Mom, Molly, or Andy...” Woody said. He sat on a wooden block and stared at the underside of his shoe where the name "ANDY" was written in faded ink. “We keep waiting for Andy to come home.”
“You really care about him,” Yui said. Woody nodded and stood back up, rejoining you and the group.
“Yeah... He's the best friend that toys like us could ever hope to have,” he said. He placed a hand on Buzz's shoulder and the toys smiled.
“All right. We'd better start looking!” you said.
“Huh?” Woody asked.
“Have you gotten any clues we can go on--any other strange things that happened?” Sora asked.
“Well... Hmm. There's one thing.”
“One big thing,” Hamm said.
“Huge, sir,” Sarge said.
“What thing?” Rex said.
“After everyone went MIA, the intruders didn't come alone. They arrived with a guy wearing a hood, dressed in black, just like you. As a matter of fact, he's the only other toy we've seen, outside of you guys,” Buzz said.
“A black hood?” Vanitas gasped. “But that would mean...”
“The Organization!” you and the others said.
“You know who it is?” Woody asked.
“Yeah. They're bad news,” Roxy said.
“Seems like you have a lot of enemies,” Buzz said.
“We may have a hunch what's causing all the weirdness. Would you mind if we handle this?” Sora said.
“I'm sorry. But we're not gonna leave this to you,” Woody said.
“Huh?” you and the others asked.
“If that guy had something to do with our friends vanishing, then he's our problem too. We've got to work together.” He extended a hand once more to Sora, who reciprocated.
“Right!” Sora said. You and the others shared a delighted response.
“So then, where can we find that guy?” you asked. Woody knelt toward the Army Men.
“Sarge, any word from the recon team?” he asked.
“The latest reports place him in town, sir. At Galaxy Toys!” Sarge said. He pointed to the Galaxy Toys flyer on Andy's bulletin board.
“Then Galaxy Toys is where we're going. Sora, (Y/N). Follow me,” Woody said. He looked up to the window and you and the others followed his gaze. “It's out the window and down the roof.”
“Not so fast, cowboy,” Buzz said.
“Hm?”
“You seem pretty gung ho about going, but shouldn't we stay here and wait for Andy?”
“Well... You've got a point, but...we've tried waiting. Look, if we go with Sora, we might find a clue. Are you with me, Buzz?” Buzz smiled.
“Of course. Okay, let's move out!” he said. You all exited through the window and down the roof of the garage to the driveway, engaging in spars with the Heartless that blocked your way. You all reached Galaxy Toys, home of Vic the Visitor, their alien mascot, displayed by the gigantic flying saucer that stood atop the building. You all crossed the threshold and entered the enormous toy store, Rex running in ahead.
“We're here!” he said. You all followed in awe of the spacious place. Large displays of Gigas were scattered on different shelves along with game boxes of all kinds. In the center of the first floor was an oversized gumball machine labeled "Space Capsule" with metal tracks leading in spirals to the upper floors. Roxy noticed the giant red Gigas.
“Oi, why doesn't THAT toy move?” she asked.
“I guess it hasn't figured it out,” Woody said.
“Figured what out?” Sora asked.
“I can make it move for you,” someone said. You and the others looked above the Space Capsule, where a black hooded figure entered through a dark portal, uncovering his hood and revealing himself to be Young Xehanort.
“You!” you and Vanitas growled.
“You're from the dream--the first of the Xehanorts!” Sora said.
“I'm so honored you remember me,” Y!Xehanort said. He snapped his fingers and three Heartless appeared along with three Negaverses. One Heartless jumped into the helmet of the red Gigas and assumed control of it. Its claw arm started to move with clicking sounds and it leaped toward you and Sora. Woody raised his hat to see better.
“Oh no! He CAN move!” he said.
“Way cool!” Hamm said. The arm spun backwards into a fist with Hamm giving off a startled shriek.
“Look out!” Vanitas said. As the Gigas attempted a punch, you and your team held him off while Woody knocked Hamm out of the way.
“One heart's shadows fill the emptiness of another. See how they bring him to life? Like Heartless and Nobodies, they fit together,” Y!Xehanort said.
“Enough! Why the hell are you doing this?!” you said.
“There's a darkness we are missing and must reclaim. The way hearts connect in this world can provide us with a clue. So we made a copy of the world, and then pulled those hearts apart. I wonder how you'll handle the strain.” Hamm ran off to hide behind a potted plant with Rex. Young Xehanort summoned the portal again and began to enter.
“Wait! What the hell does that mean?” Vanitas said.
“Don't let me down.” Young Xehanort left and the Gigas knocked you and your team away. Woody caught you all.
“Oh no!” Rex said.
“Woody! What is going on? Is this toy a friend...or foe?” Buzz said. The Gigas stood, aiming its arm cannon at them.
“I think we've got our answer,” Woody said. The cannon fires burst, causing you all to flee in opposite directions, hiding behind shelving units.
“Oi, (Y/N)! You wanna take this?” Roxy said.
“Yeah! If the Heartless know how to do it, there's no reason you can't,” Sora said.
“I’ll give it a try!” you said. You ran toward the Gigas, taking a spinning leap and landing inside. You grabbed onto the two control sticks inside and closed the helmet, leaping down to the floor to face off against the Heartless-controlled Gigas while also having Odile close by. Using the toy mech's various blasters, punches, Odile’s power, and explosions, you defeated the main Gigas troops while the others took down the small Heartless and Negaverses legions on the floor. The red Gigas slowed to a stop and the helmet opened as a Heartless disappeared, the Heart being released from inside it. You leaped out of the blue Gigas.
“He was being controlled? He wasn't just switched into battle mode by accident?” Buzz asked.
“Buzz?” Sora asked. Buzz turned away
“It’s nothing,” he sighed.
“I'm confused. That guy in the black coat--did he say he made a copy of the real world? What's that mean?” Woody said.
“It...prob'ly means they split this world in two--your friends in one world, us in the other. Only one of the worlds is real, and the other is just really convincing,” Vanitas said.
“You can't be serious. Oh! That's right, you're from a video game. Well, maybe in your game, that's how things work...but here in reality, you can't ‘split worlds.’” Buzz said. You and your team were at lost for words.
“This is ridiculous,” Buzz said. He waved you and your team off and walked away towards Woody. “Woody, let's go.”
“I admit, it does sound just a little far-fetched,” Woody said. Donald and Goofy rejoined the group. “But...say we HAVE been taken to some kind of alternate world. That would explain why your laser's real. And is it really that crazy? Worse than ‘evil emperors’ and ‘protecting the galaxy’? Any of that ring a bell?”
“Point taken. But that just means these strangers are part of the delusion. And I say it's time we parted ways and went home,” Buzz said. Donald and the others looked crestfallen.
“Thought we were friends, not strangers,” Yui said.
“Look, I get that it seems weird, but we know something's wrong with this place. We should stick together,” you said.
“(Y/N)’s right. They helped with the intruders, so they might help find our friends,” Woody said. Buzz started walking toward the red Gigas.
“They have been there for us so far. You can't deny that. Come on. Every toy deserves a fair shake. Am I right?” Woody said.
“Tell it to that toy over there,” Buzz said as he pointed to the Gigas. Woody fell silent.
“Sheriff, sir!” Sarge said. Woody looked atop the shelf to see Sarge and another Green Army Man. “Rex has just been dino-napped!”
“What's that?!” Woody asked. Sarge turned to his fellow soldier, who saluted.
“My men saw him get hauled up to the second floor, sir! And Hamm and the Aliens are MIA,” he said.
“Come on. We have got to find them!” Woody began running and Sora followed.
“Please, let us help!” he said.
“Yeah!” you and the others said. Woody looked over his shoulder at Buzz who hadn't budged and ran back over to him.
“Well, Buzz? Do you really think we can save our friends on our own? We didn't get very far before. We gotta take all the help we can get,” he said. Buzz gave an abject sigh.
“Don't worry. Sora and (Y/N) can be reckless...” Goofy said.
“Wha?” Sora asked.
“Excuse me?” you asked.
“...and Donald grumbles a lot...”
“Huh?” Donald asked.
“It’s true,” Yui said.
“...And Roxy and Vanitas do lose their temper easily...”
“Say that again,” Roxy said.
“...And Rumi does get scared easily.”
“That was so uncalled for!” Rumi said.
“But you can trust 'em!”
“Hey! He suspects you, too!” Vanitas said.
“It's true,” Sora said.
“Huh? He does?” Donald threw his hands up and Sora chuckled.
“See, they don't seem bad. Am I right, Buzz?” Woody said.
“Okay, fine. We do need the extra help. But just so we're clear: I remain skeptical about this. I'll work with you till we find our friends,” Buzz said.
“Ohhh...kay,” you and Sora said.
“Thanks for the help, Sora, (Y/N), Vanitas, Yui, Roxy, Rumi, Donald, Goofy,” Woody said.
“My troops will return to the field, sir!” Sarge said. The Army Men saluted and walked off. You and the group walked over to the Space Capsule and Buzz ejected his wings right as Woody walked into them. He scowled at Buzz for a moment, but the feeling passed.
“This ascent is gonna be rather tricky,” Buzz said.
“Too bad we're not strapped to a rocket, huh?” Woody smiled. He leaned on Buzz's wings, but Buzz retracted them back into his suit.
“Hey! Think we could use that?” you said. You pointed upwards and you all saw the spiral tracks leading to the other floors,
“It's perfect. C'mon, guys!” Woody said. You all rode the rails up to the 2nd Floor and entered a store named Action+, where you all gazed in awe of the seemingly endless shelves of action figures. Woody saw something tail-shaped out of the corner of his eye and he turned in surprise.
“Rex!” he said. He dashed around the corner of a display, but saw no one there. “Where'd he go?”
“You sure you saw him?” Buzz asked.
“Yes, he just--”
“Shh. Do you guys hear something?” Vanitas said.
“What's that?” Rumi asked as she held her hood tightly. You and Sora saw waves of darkness though a break in the boxes on display where something was moving.
“Something feels wrong...” Buzz said. With a huge swipe of its claw, an immense dragon model toy called the Supreme Smasher knocked over the display of Smasher toys in front of you all. Donald and Rumi started running back to the exit, when the store's sliding door slammed shut. The Supreme Smasher let out a giant bellow and you all clearly saw the Heartless symbol emblazoned on its neck. You all summoned your weapons and guardians.
“Another toy's being controlled!” Sora said. Buzz shook off a worrisome look and readied his laser.
“Buzz, you sure?” you asked.
“If it wanted to play nice, then it should've stayed away from my friends,” Buzz said. You and the others managed to free the controlled toys and Sora and Vanitas dispelled their Keyblades with a sigh of relief. Suddenly, another Supreme Smasher landed behind you all and roared. You and the others heard a scream and looked over to see a dragon-shaped glider hooked to the ceiling flying in circles piloted by a shouting Rex. It spun at full speed, knocking the hook out of the tile, sending the glider and Rex flying into the Supreme Smasher just as it reached back for a claw slash at you and Sora. The dragon toy fell over as Rex flew into an Air Droid display along with an orange puppet hanging from a cloud-like gear. After landing on the floor, the gear tried to float away but Rex landed on it.
“What's this?!” he asked. The puppet turned its head to face Rex menacingly, revealing a Heartless symbol on its hat. “Oh no! What did I do?!”
He ran away from it while Sora and Vanitas struck down the Marionette Heartless with one swipe of their Keyblades. Woody sighed with relief, wiping his brow.
“Nice moves, Rex,” he said.
“That was great!” Rumi said.
“Great? Really? Would you say I was impressive?” Rex asked.
“Very impressive, Rex! We couldn't look away!” Roxy said.
“Hurray! Oh, that makes me so happy!” Rex turned to Donald. “Were you watching too? Did you see what I did?”
“Yeah, good for you,” Donald said as he and Woody tried to calm him down.
“Listen, Rex,” Woody said.
“I was going for fearsome...” Rex said.
“Would ya--”
“...but I think I might've actually achieved something close to terrifying!”
“Earth to Rex!” Rex stopped.
“Do you know where the others were taken?” Sora asked.
“What do you mean? Did something bad happen?” Rex asked.
“Back to square one,” Buzz said.
“Oh, great,” Roxy said. Woody heard a clicking sound of plastic on metal and looked up to see the sergeant climbing down the vent near the ceiling.
“Sarge! Have you got a status report?” he asked.
“Sir! One of my men just located Hamm forward of our position, in Babies in Toddlers,” Sarge saluted. You and the group smiled with the good news. “The corporal was debriefing him, but something must have gone wrong. All radio contact has been lost.”
“Anything more specific we can go on?” Vanitas asked.
“Right before I lost contact, I heard music with some sort of sonic interference.”
“Music?” Buzz asked.
“Ya think it could be the Heartless?” Goofy asked.
“Or a Negaverse?” Yui asked.
“What if it's another big monster?” Donald asked.
“Let’s find out,” you said.
“I agree,” Woody said. You and the group started walking ahead, while Rex stayed put.
“Actually...I think I'll head back and wait by the entrance. I'm sure those vents are gonna be much too narrow for my big dinosaur tail,” he said. Sora looked up at the vent.
“Really? I'm sure you'd fit,” he said.
“Rex is right. Besides, we need a lookout at the entrance. It's an important mission. Can you do it?” Buzz interjected.
“Yes, sir!” Rex made a determined fist with his little arm and Buzz saluted him. You and the rest chuckled and made your way up into the ventilation shaft. Using the vents to reach the third floor of Galaxy Toys you all exited into the Dolls section of Babies & Toddlers.
“This is Babies and Toddlers. Where do you guys think we should start?” Woody said. Goofy bent down to speak to the sergeant.
“Sarge, didn't you mention music?” he asked. Sarge hopped to face him.
“Affirmative, Goofy,” he said. You peered out through the vast toy section.
“Hmm... All right. Why don't we look for things that make noise?” you said.
“Sure!” Sora and the others said.
“That's good thinking for you,” Roxy said. She walked off, cackling.
“Wha... What do you mean, for me?” Roxy broke off into a run.
“Hey, where ya--” Roxy ran around Vanitas.
“Roxy!” you laughed. The two of you ended up in a standoff around Vanitas.
“I think they really are good guys,” Woody said. You tried to grab Roxy but she runs past you and shook her butt while sticking her tongue out.
“Hold still!” you said. Yui and your team chuckled and you ran after Roxy.
“Well, you wouldn't have trusted them otherwise,” Buzz said. Roxy tried to run around Vanitas again but you blocked her, prompting Roxy to dive through your legs. Yui and the team laughed harder.
“What?” you asked.
“Missed me!” Roxy laughed as she leaped onto her feet.
“Don't!”
“And I know that your trust is a hard-earned treasure,” Buzz said. You and Roxy continued to play cat and mouse.
“No! Stop that!” you said.
“Victory is mine!” Roxy laughed. Woody smiled softly at Buzz.
“Well...for all our sakes, let's hope you're right, cowboy. I'm willing to give 'em a chance at least for a little while longer. Especially if it means getting Andy and our friends back,” Buzz said.
“Agreed,” Woody said. You and the others searched through the store, taking out more Heartless and Negaverse-possessed toys, until you all reached a large gramophone in the corner at a display labeled Musical Toads. Sora and Vanitas hopped onto the turntable.
“Is this it?” Vanitas asked. He and Sora began to run on the record and the symphony of toads on the display lit up and began playing.
“Come on, you two...You've never used a record player?” Woody said.
“Huh?” Sora asked. He and Vanitas slowed down and the music stopped as Woody leaped up onto the record as well.
“Like this!” Woody said. He started running along the record, throwing Sora and Vanitas off-balance. The two boys returned to a run and laughed as the orchestra continued playing.
“It's working!” Rumi said. One of the instruments played a false note.
“Wait, did that sound off to you?” Yui asked.
“It did,” Donald said.
“Huh?” Sora and Vanitas asked. Distracted, Sora and Vanitas slowed down and almost crashed into Woody.
“Heeey!” Woody said. Sora and Vanitas sped back up and you called up to them.
“Sora! Vanitas! There's some kinda strange noise coming from the orchestra!” you said. Sora, Vanitas, and Woody exchanged glances.
“Got it! Woody, you keep the record going,” Sora waved. He and Vanitas jumped down from the turntable.
“Whoa-whoa-whoa!” Woody said. You and your team searched the orchestra for the instrument that's playing off-rhythm and found that it's the tuba-playing toad. Woody struggled to catch his breath as he kept the music playing while Goofy peered into the tuba.
“Hmm... Somethin' seems to be stuck in this tuba,” Goofy said.
“I'll get it out,” Vanitas said. He reached into the tuba, feeling around for the obstruction. He found it and struggled to get it unstuck.
“Almost got it...” he said. With a loud pop, he pulled out...”
“Got it!” he said. ...the corporal. Vanitas placed him gently on the table.
“Corporal!” Sarge said. The sergeant hopped down from a higher ledge and walked over to the corporal, placing a hand on his back. “You all right, son?” he asked.
“Yes, sir,” Corporal said.
“That's the soldier Sarge lost contact with,” Buzz said. Sarge got the soldier to his feet and put his arm around his shoulders, hoisting him up.
“So you found Hamm?” Sora asked.
“Yes. But...while I was radioing in, a giant hand grabbed me, and it stuffed me in there. They must have taken Hamm to another location. We have to hurry!” Corporal said. He tried to walk his injured self, but fell over.
“Wait, Corporal. You're not fit for action,” Sarge said as he helped him stand again.
“But Sarge...”
“Your tour is over, son. And it's all right. Our trusted allies will take over.” You and your team saluted them and the corporal started tearing up. “I will move the corporal to a safer location.”
“Good luck,” Corporal saluted. The Green Army Men walked off as the music continued to play and Woody continued to run. They reached the edge of the orchestra ledge and gave Woody a salute.
“Huh...?” Woody asked. They hopped down the ledge. “Hey, hey, hey, hey! What is...going on?!”
“Oh, right!” you said.
“Woody! Mission complete!” Buzz said. Woody leaped off the record player and the music slowed to a stop.
“Why didn't...you tell me...a little sooner?” he asked, winded. He fell to his hands and knees, trying to catch his breath.
“Sorry, there's no time to rest. Hamm needs us,” Buzz said. He hopped off the table and Woody gave an exhausted salute. You and the others soon found a dollhouse that was rattling around in a window display. You all struggled to get the side of the house open, but with everyone's help, it unlatched, and the you all landed in a pileup.
“Talk about cabin fever. Thanks for the save,” Hamm said. He walked out of the dollhouse much to your surprise.
“You okay, Hamm?” Woody asked.
“Yeah, aside from being locked in, the accommodations were fine.” He nodded over to the fully-furnished inside of the house, where Rumi and Donald stepped inside.
“Aww. What a tiny little house. Reminds me a lot of the one I used to have,” Rumi said. They walked by the window where a giant doll peered inside.
“Huh?” Donald asked. The doll brimmed with darkness and its sudden appearance caused Rumi and Donald to thrash about the house.
“Who was--” Woody asked. Hamm shrieked in terror and backed away.
“What's wrong?” Buzz asked.
“She's back! That's the doll that pig-penned me!” Hamm said. The doll's eyes glowed orange, matching the glowing Heartless symbol on her left bunny ear.
“Hamm, take cover,” Woody said.
“Uh, copy that. One stay in the dread-and-breakfast was enough for me!” Hamm said as he ran away.
“Not another possessed toy...” Buzz said.
“Guys, look alive!” Yui said. You and the others fought the possessed Angelic Amber doll along with a horde of Bouncy Pets and Patchwork Animals also under the Marionette Heartless's and Negaverses control. The doll stopped floating and its eyes return to their normal shade of blue. It slumped against the floor, lifeless.
“Wait... What if we end up just like her? Forgetting ourselves and... attacking each other?” Buzz asked.
“No way, Buzz. That won't happen,” you said.
“No way!” Donald said.
“You guys are too strong,” Goofy said.
“You can't be sure! What if I get taken over, then attack you?” Buzz said, hotly. Woody placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Buzz, you're overthinking it,” he said.
“Yeah. The Heartless--the darkness--can only creep in when our hearts falter. Trust me. You'll be fine if you don't lose heart,” Sora said.
“Well, that's good. Because I know you, Buzz. You'll never lose heart when it comes to your friends,” Woody said as he flicked his hat upwards.
“True enough, cowboy,” Buzz said as he gave a small smile. “Sorry to have worried you all.”
“No problem. Now, let's go find the others.” You all returned to the window, Buzz helping Woody up to the windowsill, and met back up with Hamm. Donald and Goofy spotted something through the glass.
“Look!” Donald said. A UFO with a crane claw sailed past the window, a trail of darkness behind it.
“A flying saucer!” Goofy said as Woody adjusted his hat.
“I think I know who that might lead us to. C'mon, guys!” Woody said. You all opened the window right as the UFO passed by and Woody waved you all  through when the coast was clear.
“Hey, Woody. I'd just slow you down, with all the loose change I'm carrying. I'll hang by the entrance,” Hamm said.
“No problem. Be safe, Hamm,” Woody said as he leaped out of the window.
“Hey, thanks, buddy. You just take care of your old self.” He left and Woody rejoined you and the group.
“Now, let's follow that UFO!” he said.
“Right!” you all said. You all entered the Outdoor playplace of Babies & Toddlers where the UFO was flying through. The Aliens spotted it with glee.
“They have come for us,” the first one said.
“The mystic portal awaits,” the second one said. The UFO stopped over the three Aliens and the claw descended, sending you and the group running after them.
“Oh no!” Buzz said.
“Wait!” Rumi said.
“Stop!” Woody said. The Aliens were snatched up into the mothership.
“Farewell!” they said.
“It's getting away!” Buzz said.
“Don't go!” Rumi said. Surrounded by Toy Trooper Heartless, you and the others took down the possessed UFO. It dropped the Aliens, which Rumi caught quickly, and faltered in the air, eventually losing power and sinking to the floor.
“We are back!” the Aliens said. They escaped from Rumi’s grasp and they started to run in different directions.
“Our ship is no more,” the first one said.
“Nirvana will not be reached,” the second one said. Sora picked one up with a squeak.
“Sorry I trashed your ride,” he said.
“Fear not,” it said.
“We still have our new home,” the first one said.
“The Chamber of Andy,” the Aliens said.
“They're right,” Buzz said. Sora set the Alien down. “This isn't where we belong. We've been in this toy store long enough. It's time for us to go home to Andy's room.”
“But...dad told us that room isn't even his real room,” Vanitas said.
“Can you prove that any of that nonsense is true?” Buzz asked. You and the others sighed. “And even if that Andy's room IS fake, it doesn't mean he's not somewhere in this world with us. I'm going home to wait for him. No more debate. Are you with me Woody?”
“Hmm... You’re right, Buzz. Now that we're all accounted for, we should meet up at the entrance and go home,” Woody said.
“Okay. We could have used friends like you for the final showdown...” you said.
“But Organization XIII's our problem to solve,” Yui said. Sora nodded and Donald hopped in place.
“Yeah, I can take 'em!” Donald said.
“I'm not so sure about that...” Roxy said. Goofy chuckled.
“I'll show ya!” Roxy laughed and ran up to Woody and Buzz, you and the others following suit.
“Guys, can we see you off?” you asked.
“That would be great,” Woody said. You and the others returned to the first floor.
“Sarge, roll call,” Woody said as he pointed to the Green Army Man and walked past him.
“Sir, yes sir! Roll call! All toys, fall in!” Sarge saluted. The Army Men, Hamm, and the Aliens formed a line as Buzz walked by them.
“Sarge... Army Men times four... Hamm... Aliens 1, 2, 3...” Buzz said. The Army Men saluted and each Alien squeaked as they raised their hands. “Wait. Where's Rex?”
“Aw, he took off. Said he wanted to prove to you you could trust Sora. He's up there by the video games,” Hamm said as he pointed up to the third floor and Buzz sighed.
“Well, here we go again.”
“Huh? This is about us?” Sora asked as he gave a worried look.
“He's not safe. The Heartless and the Negaverses are out there,” you said.
“You're right. Any chance you guys could help us one last time?” Woody said.
“Sure!” You, Vanitas, and Sora said.
“Of course!” Rumi and Goofy said.
“You bet!” Roxy, Yui, and Donald said.
“Thanks guys.” You all returned to the third floor and entered the video game store where you all found Rex among the Verum Rex merchandise.
“Hurray!” he said. He hopped down and rushed over to Sora with the game in his hands.
“Look! Look! I found it!” he said. He held it almost too close to Sora's face, trying to show him the cover.
“See, Sora?” The cover showed an image of the silver-haired Yozora lazing on stone steps with his sword and crossbow.
“Well, I never look THIS good. The clothes kinda match,” Sora said. Buzz and Woody walked further into the game store around a giant poster for Verum Rex, where they could see a much larger version of the game cover.
“Whaddaya know! They ARE video game figures. See? I told ya, Buzz. They're toys, just like the rest of us,” Woody said. Buzz looked over to you and your team as something caught Rex's eye.
“Well, I suppose,” he said. You and Sora Sora leaned over to speak privately with Donald and Roxy.
“Donald, I thought your magic decided how I look. Explain,” Sora said.
“And I thought that Spirit’s don’t change their looks,” you said.
“It doesn’t apply to all of the worlds,” Roxy said.
“And that’s not you,” Donald said.
“Say, Riku would make a great action figure!” Goofy said.
“Must be him!” Rumi said.
“It kind of looks like him,” Vanitas said.
“No! It's me. I've got the black clothes and, uh...” Sora trailed off slowly.
“So what?” Yui asked.
“All right, everyone. Now that we're back together, it's time to return to Andy's room,” Buzz said. Rex was reading the back cover of a Play Plus strategy guide.
“Now?” he asked. He dropped the book and searched through the shelf, tossing books aside.
“But can't I at least check the strategy guides? I want to know how to beat Bahamut!” He said as he managed to find the Verum Rex guide.
“Next time. Right now, we need to go home,” Buzz said. He took the book and tossed it away. Rex's face turned sad and Buzz consoled him with a tap him on the snout. Rex walked away hesitantly from the book, following Buzz back to the group. A figure with a pair of boots landed on the floor nearby.
“Oh, but you needn't rush off,” Y!Xehanort said. The voice caught your attention and you all summon your weapons and guardians.
“You!” You and Vanitas said.
“I have more to observe. I can't let you leave yet.”
“It’s me that you really want. Leave my friends out of this!” you said. Y!Xehanort smirked.
“You WOULD say that, Spirit of Light,” he said. Suddenly, a pounding headache ran through you, causing you to scream in pain.
“(Y/N)!” Sora and the others yelled. You fell to the ground, whimpering in pain.
“Roxy, Vanitas, stay with (Y/N) while we deal with Xehanort!” Sora said. Roxy and Vanitas nodded while Sora turned towards Y!Xehanort.
~~~~
You looked around and saw that you were in a dark place. You tried taking a step but found that you couldn’t.
“What’s happening?” you asked. Suddenly, memories of you as a child started showing up. From the day you were found by Xehanort to the day you met Sora.
“Why is he doing this?” you asked yourself. You heard someone singing and looked over to see what looked like a woman in the Realm of Darkness.
youtube
“Who is she?” you asked.
“(Y/N)...stop Xehanort...” a voice said.
“Huh?” Before the voice could say another thing, you were brought back to your friends.
“(Y/N)! You’re okay!” Vanitas said.
“Yeah...” you said as you sat up slowly. You looked over and saw Sora still talking with Y!Xehanort.
“What did you do to him?!” he asked. You looked over and saw Buzz trying to shoot Goofy with his lazer. Sora attacked Y!Xehanort, who phased away in the blink of an eye.
“I thought I made it clear. I am testing the strength of their bonds,” Y!Xehanort said. He walked around the room, phasing in and out as Sora tried to strike him down, but only slicing air.
“In this world, toys have hearts. And those hearts come from a powerful bond,” he said. Sora looked around, seeing Y!Xehanort on a high display case above a video screen.
“So what happens when those bonds are stretched to their limit? When they are worlds apart, can cloth and plastic hold on to their hearts?” Sora leaped to the top of the display with another failed attack.
“All I needed was a wedge to widen the divide--someone like you to fill them with distrust and doubt.” Sora found him walking along the display and Y!Xehanort dodged each of Sora's blows effortlessly.
“And that chasm you created can be filled with a vast darkness.” He appeared on the floor and Sora leaped down at him, striking nothing.
“Witness it for yourself.”
“Sora!” you and the others said. You and the others were trying to hold Buzz at bay, but he continued his laser blasts unflinching as Goofy stopped them from hitting Woody.
“Do somethiiing!” Rex said.
“On my way!” Sora said. He tried to run to their aid, but Y!Xehanort snatched him up.
“Sora!” you said.
“Not this time!” Y!Xehanort said. He summoned a concentrated energy blast near Sora's waist, which then exploded, blasting him into the nearby video screen. He phased into it, sending a ripple through the screen. He landed on a metal surface of an enormous boat several miles from a nighttime city skyline.
“Sora! What did you do to him?!” you said.
“Nothing that will kill him. Or maybe that’s my intention.”
“You son of a--!” You ran over to him and attacked him with your dagger. Meanwhile, Sora landed in the video game that Y!Xehanort was standing in front of.
“Where am I?” he asked.
“Haven't you heard? In this world, you come from a video game. So now, you can watch my experiment from inside that screen. That is...if you manage to find a moment's rest,” Y!Xehanort said. He teleported out of the store as Sora came face to face with the Gigas inside Verum Rex.
“There's got to be a way out. Buzz, Woody, hang on!” Sora said. After a few minutes, Sora leaped out of the television screen to the delighted faces of his friends except you. You sat on your knees, looking at where Y!Xehanort was.
“I’m gonna kill him...” you mumbled.
“Wait...Where's Buzz?” Sora asked. You looked behind you and saw him standing there. You stood up and walked over to him.
“He disappeared into a dark corridor,” you said.
“Oh...”
“Sora, how do we get him back?” Woody asked.
“I don't know. My power won't open those.”
“Neither will ours,” Roxy said. Yui nodded in agreement.
“Vanitas, what about you?” Sora asked.
“Same situation as the twins.” Woody breathed a large sigh as the Green Army Men walked nearer.
“Sir, did I hear you say ‘dark corridor’?” Sarge asked.
“That's right, Sarge. Any ideas?” Woody said.
“Well, it might be a long shot, but we've sighted a shadowy portal in the Kid Korral. We can infiltrate from a window inside Babies and Toddlers.” Woody's disposition lightened. “I'll head there and get it open.”
“Sarge, you're a lifesaver!” Woody turned to your and the others. “You guys in?”
“Yeah!” you all said.
“Please promise you'll bring Buzz home,” Rex said.
“With batteries included?” Hamm asked.
“Journey safely,” the first alien said.
“Farewell!” the second alien said.
“Don't worry. WE'RE gonna get our friend back,” Woody said. You and the others returned to the Outdoor section of Babies & Toddlers.
“Vani. Can I talk to you about something?” you said.
“Sure.”
“I think we have another sister.”
“Huh? How do you know?”
“During that headache, I caught a glimpse of a woman. She was in the Realm of Darkness and she was trying to tell me something.”
“What did she say?”
“She said to stop dad but before she could say another thing, I was brought back here.”
“Well, if she is dad’s daughter, then we need to save her before something bad happens.”
“I know she is. I can feel it.” Vanitas wrapped an arm around your waist and kissed your temple.
“It’s gonna be okay,” he whispered.
“I hope so.”
“Guys, look!” Woody said. High above on a windowed wall with the design of a house was a much smaller window.
“That must be the window Sarge mentioned,” Yui said. You all made your way up through the window and entered the Kid Korral, where Sora saw odd green cubes piled against the main door.
“The entrance was blocked by BLOCKS?” he asked.
“Can you use the Gigas to move 'em?” Vanitas asked.
“Yeah, maybe. I'll try.” Sora piloted a nearby blue Gigas, stretching its arm out. He activated the claw which sent magnetic bolts to the green blocks, causing them to glow and disperse, unbarring the door. You and the others moved further into the room where Donald spotted something.
“Up there!” he said. A stream of darkness emanated from the uppermost vent in the room, much too high to reach by normal means, especially at toy height.
“How we gonna reach that?” Sora asked.
“(Y/N). Your guardian is a swan. Maybe you and Odile can pile up the blocks so that we can reach up there,” Rumi said.
“Okay, if you say so,” you said. You pulled out your dagger and held it up into the air. “ODILE!”
From behind you, Odile was summoned. With the help from Roxy, you climbed on Odile and told her what to do. She gave a honk in agreement and she helped place the blocks together while Sora and the others took down the Heartless and the Negaverses. Once all the blocks had been gathered and piled up, three cones landed on top of the green figure assembled and a fanfare played. The figure, with a permanent surprised look on its face, leaned over toward the wall, providing a path up to the vent.
“Hey, is that...” Roxy asked.
“A cactus?” Rumi asked. The vent cover fell open.
“Yep, and it's our way up to the dark corridor,” Vanitas said. You and the others made your way to the vent and entered it, finding a corridor of darkness.
“It looked like this?” Sora asked.
“Yup,” Goofy said.
“Here goes,” You said. You and the others passed through the ominous portal, finding themselves in a hazy abyss. Buzz was hovering in the center, darkness coming off of him and spreading through the air. Y!Xehanort waited for them, waves of dark energy covering the floor as pieces of toys were scattered about the abyss, floating on invisible strings.
“Buzz!” Sora and Woody said.
“Dad!” you and Vanitas said.
“What do you want with my friend?” Woody asked.
“Look... Such tremendous darkness. All because he was ripped away from the boy who cares about him most,” Y!Xehanort said. The waves punched upward.
“Does that mean...we'll all be like Buzz...” The waves coalesced around Woody. “...if we don't...find Andy?”
“Wrong! Distance doesn't matter. Andy's part of their hearts, just like my friends are part of mine,” you said. Sora and the others nodded in agreement, glaring at Y!Xehanort.
“You can't rip that apart!” Sora said. Woody looked at the bottom of his shoe where Andy had written his name years ago, and then at Buzz's, just the same. Buzz was carried higher by the waves as Xehanort raised an arm.
“What? ‘Your friends are your power’? Ah... How very true. But if the light of friendship is a form of power...the darkness of being alone is a power...even greater. Darkness is the heart's true nature,” Y!Xehanort said. You were stunned to silence, but Woody placed a hand on your shoulder and walked past you.
“Whatever you're talking about, I don't care. Put Buzz back the way he was, then get lost!” he said.
“Or else what, toy?”
“Yeah, I am a toy. And a friend.” Woody stamped down with his foot, breaking the waves of darkness slightly, revealing the floor underneath. “My guess is no one's ever loved you before. Because you know NOTHING about hearts and love.”
“WHAT DID HE SAY?!” Roxy cackled.
“Roxy!” Yui scolded. You and Sora joined Woody in the circle of light, both making steps forward.
“There are hearts all around us, trying to connect. Your ‘loneliness’ only made Woody and Buzz's connection stronger. THAT's the heart's true nature--to never, ever let go. Wherever they are, Andy and the other toys haven't let go either,” you said.
“Yeah! You can't keep us from Andy. We're going home no matter what. And taking Buzz!” Woody said.
“Xehanort, you're so caught up in finding the shadows, you forgot about the light that cast them,” Sora said. The force of light broke through the dark waves, tearing apart the darkness holding Buzz in the air. As it reached Buzz, it shined out with a brilliant light.
“No!” Y!Xehanort said. You and your team charged forward, forcing Xehanort to summon his Keyblade, blocking the you all.
“Woody, now!” Vanitas said. Woody leaped forward over them, tossing out the pull string from his back. It latched onto a Lego floating in the air and Woody swung around, using the momentum to snatch Buzz from his tangled perch. You and Sora smiled and Y!Xehanort scowled as the pull string retracted back inside Woody with a message of "Giddy-up, partner! We gotta get this wagon train a-movin'!" Suddenly, Buzz opened his eyes, seeing Woody on top of him. Woody lifted his head and gazed back at his friend. He turned over and sat with Buzz, who held his head.
“Woody...Wait, how did I get here?” Buzz asked.
“Hmm. Oh, I don't know!” Woody elbowed Buzz. “Maybe somebody switched you into ‘dark and stormy’ mode.”
“But I don't have a-” He realized what Woody is saying. The cowboy extended a hand to him and Buzz smiled, taking it, getting to his feet.
“Thank you, Woody,” he said.
“Good to have ya back, Buzz.”
“Oi, hurry up!” Roxy said. The two of them looked over to see you and your team locked in combat with Y!Xehanort.
“We can't hold him much longer!” Rumi said.
“Don't give up, guys!” Sora said. Young Xehanort knocked you all back.
“So, even empty puppets can be given strong hearts. I am going to have to remember that,” he said. Buzz aims his laser beam at Y!Xehanort.
“Remember this--our hearts will always be connected to Andy's. No matter what you do!” he said.
“And that's something you'll never understand, because you're hollower than any toy,” Woody said.
“But now I know a heart can be placed in the vessel of our choosing. For that, let me give you a parting gift to play with,” Y!Xehanort said.
“Wait!” you and Sora said. The two of you ran at Y!Xehanort and slashed right through him.
“Find the hearts joined to yours,” Y!Xehanort said. (why did that feel like he was betraying org.xiii?)
“Huh?” you and Sora asked. Xehanort vanished and Donald leaped up, pointing at the sky where the darkness had begun to break.
“There!” he said. You and the others rejoined as the darkness was swept up, forming a giant flying saucer Heartless, revealing the room as a toy-sized cityscape with a puzzle-piece road.
“Careful!” Woody said.
“Here goes!” you said. After a long battle with the King of Toys involving an electromagnetic tornado, you all succeeded in finishing off the Heartless and returned to the first floor of Galaxy Toys. You all regrouped with your friends and began walking toward the exit.
“So, crusty got away again,” Roxy said.
“Not so much as crusty but more of a brat,” Yui said. You gave a small chuckle but it didn’t make you feel better. Sora hung his head and stopped walking.
“I’m sorry!” Sora said. You and the others turned back to him, confused.
“I wanted to get you back to the real world,” he said. Woody and Buzz looked at each other and smirked.
“It does seem that we're trapped here,” Buzz said.
“We'll never get home,” Rex said.
“Yeah, stuck like pigs,” Hamm said.
“Our position appears fixed,” Sarge said.
“Oh nooo,” the three aliens said. You and the others gave a sad sigh.
“A shame we'll have to stay a little longer...with our new best friends,” Buzz said.
“Huh?” you and your team asked. Woody walked up and leaned on Sora's shoulder.
“After all the adventures we've had, we're not quite ready to say, ‘So long,’” he said. Sora laughed.
“You guys...” he said. The space ranger extended a hand.
“I'm sorry that I was being so stubborn. Please forgive me,” he said. Sora shook his head, smiling, and shook Buzz's hand.
“Hey, you were just looking out for your friends. No biggie,” he said.
“Yeah, somebody's gotta be the sensible one, especially since Woody's always gettin' in trouble,” Hamm said.
“Gawrsh, that sounds a little like Sora and (Y/N), don't it?” Goofy asked. You, Sora, and Woody exchanged a look, pointing at yourselves.
“Yeah, and I'm the dependable one!” Donald said.
“Like Buzz! ...Kinda,” Rex said. You all laughed.
“Besides, if we do go back to the real world, we'll never see you again, right?” Woody asked. Sora scratched his cheek.
“But...what about Andy? You care about him so much,” Rumi said. Buzz put a hand on her shoulder.
“And he's still right here with us,” he said as he touched his heart, smiling. Woody put an arm around Sora.
“If we follow our hearts, we'll find him again,” he said.
“Yeah!” Sora grinned. You and the others continued walking to the exit.
“So, Sora, (Y/N), are you goin' after the guy in the black coat?” Woody asked.
“Something tells me we can't join you on that mission,” Buzz said.
“That's okay...because you've become part of our hearts.” Woody pointed to Sora’s heart. “So let us become a part of yours.”
You and the others extended joyous laughter and infectious smiles as Sora side-hugged Woody.
“Thank you!” he said.
“Now, off you go. To infinity and beyond!” Buzz said.
To be continued...
30 Days of Vanitas no Carte: Day 21!
Who do you think will still be living at the end of the series?
because this is mochijun, and people Will Die.
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the most obvious living character: Noé won’t die. He’s the narrator (similar to Gil in Pandora Hearts) and we know that he’s writing and creating the case study of Vanitas in hindsight after Vanitas’s “death”, aka after the manga is over. He might die at the very end of the manga, after he finishes his case study, but not any time before. Essentially, he’ll live until at least the last 3 pages, and will probably survive the whole manga.
Next up is Vanitas, who I’m really not sure about. Noé says Vanitas dies, but Vanitas says he doesn’t die, he’s just going away or something.... which makes me think he’s going to end up in some state of limbo, maybe returning at the very end of the manga from this limbo somehow? idk. Maybe living, maybe dead, maybe like half living and half dead.
I think whether Dominique lives or dies will depend a lot on the next Misha/ Exposition Universelle arc. It really depends on how deeply her actions impact the plot of the arc— the deeper/ more negative the impact, the more likely she is to die. I think her death could be an interesting way to show/ shape Noé’s psyche, especially if she dies at the hands of either Teacher of Vanitas... however, I did feel this way towards the middle of the Return of the Beast Arc with Jean- Jacques too so this might just be my brain being sadistic. Overall Dominique’s death would have some extremely interesting plot repercussions but since Noé would kill to protect her, her death seems a bit unlikely.
Jeanne is another question mark. I feel like her plot arc is just starting (I mean what’s with that weird random clone girl thing aaaaugh) so I can’t come to any conclusions until we know more about her situation. We do know, however, that Jeanne is currently one of the most well- protected people in the entire story. Jeanne is extremely valuable to every single power hungry vampire as the person Grand Duke Lucius Oriflamme loves more than anyone else in the world. Ruthven in particular will try to avoid killing Jeanne because of this. TLDR: she might die but definitely not any time soon.
Next up is Luca! To be completely frank... I don’t think Luca will die. He’s way too valuable to the vampires. Since he has no blood relatives that we know of besides his brother Loki and his adopted uncle Ruthven, there is nobody Luca can pass the title of Grand Duke to (I’m assuming it’s a hereditary title because Luca is like... 12) until he’s older, which means killing him means killing the second most politically powerful people in the universe. That’s causing extreme, extrEME retaliation. In addition to that most people underestimate Luca do to his age and don’t see him as as powerful as he actually is. The one exception to this “Luca doesn’t die” rule is if he dies protecting Jeanne— this is a very real possibility, but I don’t think Jeanne will let it happen. Luca won’t die.
Let’s move on to Jean- Jacques and Chloé, more characters who I don’t think will die. They live in an isolated forest, can protect themselves from intruders, and are both like a thousand years old. I think they’re just gonna life on happily in Gévaudan.
Next up in our “who’s gonna die” list is Roland. I’m not sure how he would die, because Roland is extremely powerful, but the fact that the character from the Matter of France that he’s based on dies makes it extremely likely that Roland is going to die too. I really can’t see how he’d die, though. But I do think he’s going to die before the manga is over. Roland is a character that’s honestly already completed his character arc— he loves himself, loves everyone else, has learned to accept people, everything else. Him dying nobly in some way or another would honestly not be an out of order completion of his character arc.
Everything I just said for Roland? Copy/ paste that (except for the part about loving and accepting people lol) here and you’ll get my feelings on Olivier. He dies in the Matter of France so it does seem like he’s gonna die in VnC too.
The next main Chasseur to talk about is Astolfo. I think Astolfo is going to live for the opposite reason that I think Roland is going to die— Astolfo hasn’t completed his character arc. If he dies now, just a kid full of fury and regret, his plot arc isn’t really satisfying in any way unless he has some kind of extremely last minute turnaround a bit like Elliot’s realization about Humpty Dumpty in Pandora Hearts. To sum it all up Astolfo prolly won’t die.
Riche and Johann won’t die.
I really don’t want Dante to die, but I could see him dying either for his family (Johann and Riche) or for Vanitas. Oof.
And now, let’s get into some of the more morally ambiguous characters in the manga! As for Misha, I don’t think Misha will die— the only reason for his death would be if there’s absolutely no other way for Noé and Vanitas to deal with him than to kill him/ let him die. However, I also can’t think of a way for the Misha/ Exposition Universalle to end neatly unless Misha dies. What a paradox.
Ruthven will die. He has to. There’s no other way for the story to end. There’s a sliiiight possibility that Ruthven will somehow go through an extreme change of heart or something, but I really think to only question I have about his ending is whether he’ll die a redeemable or irredeemable character. He’s also the character I could see nearly any other character killing and having a logical reason for doing so? He’s finna die.
The Teacher will live. This might just be my own strange liking for the Teacher as a character but I think he’s too OP to do anything but survive. Also, in a less opinionated way— the Case Study of Vanitas as a whole is nothing but a collection of letters Noé has written to Teacher that he’s collected and added his own memories to, creating one case file created for Teacher. Noé could be doing this all for himself/ to fulfill the Teacher’s last request or something, but that seems a tad unlikely.
And that’s about it! I hope to do more of these prompts, but they may be a lil out of order from here on out. I haven’t included a few characters who seem important— particularly the Beastias, Manet and Nox, and Luna— mainly because we either just don’t know enough about them (first four) or we don’t even know if they’re alive in the first place (Luna). What do you think? Who will live and who will die in Vanitas no Carte?
