Okay, time for a real post 👁
Wheeeeew its been a while. Shorter than my last break but certainly felt much longer, a lot has happened in the span of nearly two months. A lot has changed, some stress left some stress came anew. But I don't want to talk too much about that
What I do wanna talk about is that I came back to 1,100 followers?? Where did y'all come from? I appreciate it so much that even in my absence you guys have stuck around, and even grown in numbers. It means a ton. I genuinely am so thankful, it puts a big idiot smile plastered right across my face. I love it. I'm always nervous about taking a break because I worry I'm letting you guys down, I post so frequently and then all of a sudden I post lowly and then not at all, I know it can be irritating. But as much time as I spend on line there's a big world outside of it that I need to focus on. Sometimes at least
I'll probably still be a bit shoddy with activity, mostly because something happened in my personal life that I don't want to disclose too much about, but it is a very good thing and it's going to take up a lot of my free time. Like I said, trust me, it's a good thing. But that doesn't mean I'm going to hold from drawing.
I say that because, when I was running this blog, I was the most motivated I had ever been to create content. Genuinely, every single day when I woke up I wanted to draw. It was really therapeutic for me and I enjoyed it, and every time I have abandoned this blog my desire to draw goes out the window. Of course I do need to take breaks from this blog to focus on my personal life, but whenever I do I'm less motivated to create. I did create things here and there but I didn't really share them as much, mostly because I wasn't proud of most of it. But a step in the right direction is being happy about the things you make.
On that note of creativity I need to get something else off my chest. I've had a long and hard thought about coming back to this blog, I've been nervous to do so because this blog felt so "obligatory" to keep up. By that I mean it's totally became less about making art and more about posting content on a regular basis, even when I wasn't proud of it just so I could have something to post. There's a lot of you I want to make happy and it's difficult to do when I have to keep a narrow tunnel vision with content.
What I mean is, I know a massive chunk of you, if not 1,000 of you followed me specifically for DC content. And I can understand why, the whole reason I made this blog was because I got back into the nick of drawing again and DC was my main motivator. Trust me it still is a huge motivator, comic books and cartoons are some of my favourite things in the whole world, and that's something that's never going to change. But because so many of you followed me for a specific reason, I've always been nervous about posting anything relating to other topics because I wasn't sure if it would drive others away.
So I'm going to be posting art and other content relating to not just DC ( course the DC art will continue, Batman is one of my biggest interests) but a bunch of other interests as well I want to make content for.
I've been nervous to post art/content relating to other fandoms or interests because I'm worried that it would clog up the feed of people who followed me for a specific thing, but at the end of the day I don't mean to sound like a dick but this is my blog, and I want to share what I make on my blog. And I hope you guys understand that, I still appreciate you guys so unbelievably much and I cherish it always that you guys have stuck around.
Call this a fresh start for the blog, I understand some people might be upset but I want to express my creative side a lot more than before. As I said DC content will still be posted, I love posting content for it. But there's just so much more I want to make and share.
If it's any comfort I will be tagging everything I post accordingly relating to the sources it's from, so if you ever see something you don't like that I post you're welcome to blacklist the tags so only the content on my blog you want to see gets filtered in!
On that note, a very late happy New Year, and I hope everyone is doing and do as well today.

MONTHLY MEDIA: August 2021
Goodbye August and hello autumn. Here’s how I spent the dog days of summer (outside of the occasional trip outside).
……….FILM……….
Tumblr media
The Suicide Squad (2021) Just...so good. Yes this was the first movie I’d seen in theatres since 2020 (Birds of Prey, this wasn’t planned) but that’s not the only reason I loved this. The movie just knows exactly what it is and delivers that and more. So many character arcs and funny moments to compliment the endless gore. Very excited to see it again.
Tumblr media
A Quiet Place Part II (2020) I think a solid continuation of the story. It really kept up the intensity and while some stuff didn’t quite land for me (like the trope where there’s a community of humans as bad as the monsters...that always bums me out and comes across as suuuuuper pessimistic) it was still a fun time at the movies.
Werewolves Within (2021) Pretty decent whodunnit! The end didn’t feel quite as satisfying as I’d imagined (the culprit was fine, it was more the motive that didn’t quite stick the landing for me). Weird politics at times but it had genuinely tense moments so your mileage may very.
Tumblr media
Fear Street Part Two: 1978 (2021) Still enjoying this series and each segment feels complete while also feeding into the larger plot. The killings mostly feel like an afterthought or at least they don’t seem to be the main draw of the movie, and I’m into that. The events are still horrific, but it doesn’t feel quite as exploitative, if that makes sense?
Fear Street Part Three: 1666 (2021) Finishing strong! Everything tied together, the twists and turns felt earned, and it all really wrapped up in a satisfying way. Refreshingly strong trilogy.
……….TELEVISION……….
Tumblr media
Ted Lasso (Episode 1.08 to 2.06) Still can’t say enough good stuff about this show. It’s just really nice watching a bunch of flawed yet decent people work through their varying challenges with (and against) each other. Great stuff.
RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars (Episode 6.07 to 6.11) My money is on Ginger Minj but my gut says Ra’Jah O’Hara.
Marvel’s What If... (Episode 1.01 to 1.03) While I don’t rush to watch each episode, I enjoy each installment when I finally get to it. Superhero fatigue? Television fatigue? Who knows.
Bachelor in Paradise (Episode 7.01 to 7.04) I wasn’t sure I’d get back into this but after week 1 I was hooked! It’s just refreshing to shift gears from the Bachelor/ette dynamic of everyone vying for one person, you know?
The Bachelorette (Episode 17.09 to 17.10) Oof what an end to the season! The finale made it clear that Katie and her family have some stuff to work through. Between Greg and her Aunt’s general treatment of Blake, it really came across as unresolved history popping in. Outside of that, it was a fine finale. Though I will say that I continue to love Tayshia and Kaitlyn as the hosts.
……….READING……….
Tumblr media
Can’t Even: How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation by Anne Helen Petersen (Complete) This was a slow read for me cause it was such a bummer. I mean it was concise, informative, and presented a clear path to how we got here, but that didn’t exactly make it fun. Still HIGHLY recommend (especially for those older than the titular generation) but what are the odds a boomer is reading this blog post? Maybe gift it to them? I dunno.
Tumblr media
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and The Marvelous Land of Oz by Eric Shanower and Skottie Young (Complete) Technically I’m reading through the Omnibus that collects all 6 of Shanower and Young’s adaptations. These interpretations are so faithful and yet darker that I think they serve as a good balance between the two Oz movies. Definitely worth checking out if you’re interested in getting to know the world of Oz but aren’t interested in reading the original books.
……….AUDIO……….
Tumblr media
Aisles by Angel Olsen (2021) I love me some moody 80s covers.
I Hate Running by Number One Popstar (2021) This popped up in my spotify recommendations and now I’ve been listening to all of Number One Popstar’s singles (and they’re all excellent). Good energy, funny in a laid back way, and each one is a gem of a track. Go check out all of their music.
……….GAMING……….
Tumblr media
Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) More adventures in Neverland! My D&D group has started exploring the Skull and...it’s getting mixed reactions. Maybe a little too weird for some? Just weird enough for others. Anyway you can read more in-depth campaign diaries here on reddit!
And that’s it! As always, let me know if you have anything to recommend and thanks for reading!

CHARACTER INSPIRATION // C H A L L E N G E
Rules: Write up a blurb or make a visual collage of the people or characters (from books, TV shows, movies, etc.) that inspired your OC, either visually, personality wise, or just a general vibe.
I was tagged by this by so many lovely pals -- @thelockwoodroyals, @wa-royal-tea AND @ourwillowcreekroyals !!! I only feel bad that it took me so long but I wanted it to be as perfect as it could be while taking time to fiddle with Photoshop more (thank you @royaldevilliers for answering my silly questions). Below the cut are the descriptions for the personality types and tropes for each of the main three kids of this next generation!
Not sure who’s done this yet, so if you see this and you want to do it, this is me telling you to do it!
CHARLOTTE:
The Protagonist:  Protagonists are natural-born leaders, full of passion and charisma. Forming around two percent of the population, they are oftentimes our politicians, our coaches and our teachers, reaching out and inspiring others to achieve and to do good in the world. With a natural confidence that begets influence, Protagonists take a great deal of pride and joy in guiding others to work together to improve themselves and their community.
Spirited Young Lady:  She is the girl who bends the rules just a little. Oh, she can dance a country dance or pour tea with the best of them, but she may also be a good walker or horseback rider. She may be the most intelligent girl in the story, and she is almost certainly the wittiest and the most outspoken, sometimes earning her the title of spitfire. She may be talented in more practical ways, as well: if given the opportunity, she may turn out to be a wise investor, and she may harbor talent for music, writing, or art that goes beyond drawing room entertainment and might become a means of financial independence if necessary. In rare cases, she may even solve a murder. Though she occasionally runs into some trouble, especially if she fails to obey the powers that be, she usually comes through in the end.
Deadpan Snarker: A character prone to gnomic, sarcastic, sometimes bitter, occasionally whimsical asides. The Deadpan Snarker exists to deflate pomposity, point out the unlikelihood of certain plans, and deliver funny lines. Typically the most cynical supporting character. In most cases, it is implied that the snarker would make a good leader, strategist, or consultant given their ability to instantly see the flaws in a constructed plan. More often than not, their innate snarkiness is the only thing preventing the other characters from comprehending this for themselves.
Politically Active Princess:  The Politically Active Princess is a princess that takes active interest in and plays an active role in politics. Naive courtiers and commoners alike might view her only as a figurehead, but in truth, she discreetly uses her position and guile in order to achieve her ends. Skilled in diplomacy, she will usually attempt to solve conflicts via conversation or bargaining, rather than combat. Her defining trait is her involvement in politics or diplomatic matters, without letting herself serve only as a bargaining chip.
Inspired by: Mia Thermopolis (The Princess Diaries); Lorelai Gilmore (Gilmore Girls); Vex’ahlia (Critical Role); Jenny Lee (Call the Midwife)
PETER:
The Architect:  It can be lonely at the top. As one of the rarest personality types – and one of the most capable – Architects (INTJs) know this all too well. Rational and quick-witted, Architects may struggle to find people who can keep up with their nonstop analysis of everything around them.
The Dog Bites Back:  Unlike the Bastard Understudy and The Starscream, this character attacks as a crime of opportunity. There is no danger that he will take over the villain's place in the grand scheme of things. There is, however, a possibility that he will menace the others as a True Final Boss. The backstabber often ends up dead, but this is usually not Redemption Equals Death because their motive is not noble. Innocent victims who turn on the villain typically do it only for revenge, while evil victims prove that they were fine with all of the Big Bad's crimes except the one committed against them.
Middle Child Syndrome: Everyone loves the oldest child because the parents can rely on them, they watch out for their siblings, and they're so confidently attractive. The Youngest Child Wins because they're the "baby". But what does that leave the one in the middle? That's essentially the definition of Middle Child Syndrome, in which a child automatically may become The Unfavorite or the rebellious Black Sheep, specifically because they are the easiest child to overlook. They're not old enough to be given the responsibilities and privileges of the oldest, and the youngest child took their spot as the spoiled and doted-on "baby" of the family. This tends to be more of an issue when there are three children rather than four or more. Oftentimes in media, the middle child ends up becoming more of the Deadpan Snarker or the quirky one for this reason.
The Un-Favorite: Where there's an Alpha wolf, there's got to be a Beta. When there is a first banana, there is a second banana. This is the person in the family who can't get a break. For example, this is the child who's the big let-down to their parents, the daughter that was supposed to be a son (or vice-versa), the child the parents had by accident when they'd already decided they didn't need another mouth to feed, the adoptive, foster, or stepchild that came before the parents had a biological child, the illegitimate child conceived by infidelity on the part of one of the parents (if not even worse). But all in all, this is basically the kid who is always getting the short-end of the stick. In some extreme cases, this may cause Rich Sibling, Poor Sibling, especially if one sibling is forced into service to the other. A regular line that may be entailed with this is a variant of, "Honestly, [name], why can't you be more like [favorite's name]?"
Inspired by: Edith Crawley (Downton Abbey); Fiyero (Wicked: The Musical); Logan Huntzberger (Gilmore Girls); Rafael Solano (Jane the Virgin)
PEGGY:
The Mediator:  Idealistic and empathetic, Mediators long for deep, soulful relationships, and they feel called to help others. But because this personality type makes up such a small portion of the population, Mediators may sometimes feel lonely or invisible, adrift in a world that doesn’t seem to appreciate the traits that make them unique.
The Baby of the Bunch: Being the youngest of your group typically comes with some perks and challenges. On one side you're probably the cutest, have a pass to act immature, people like taking care of you, and you can embrace your fun side, knowing that the elders are there to handle the serious stuff. And if there's anything you're naïve about, you have plenty of others to give you the realest unfiltered advice without the generational gap and detachment that your parents or the Old Master have. On the other end, sometimes people don't take you seriously. There you're kinda stuck because no matter how old you get, you'll always be "the baby" in their eyes.
Indifferent Beauty: A character who is attractive, aware of their effect on other people, but doesn't care or at least doesn't value their physical attractiveness over their other traits. Often, this character is a consummate professional who is well aware of the fact that they could use their "assets" to get what they want by other means, but feels that it would be unprofessional or beneath their dignity, and is instead focused on proving that they can compete purely on skill, often to the exclusion of romantic opportunities. While such characters are not averse to dressing in sexy outfits, they don't plan on relying on or even exploiting their sex appeal - but the camera will often do that for them. Other characters' indifference is not due to regarding relying on appearance to be beneath their dignity, but rather that they consider it to be unimportant.
Spoiled Sweet:  The Spoiled Sweet character is a naive, spoiled, rich or comfortably upper-class or upper-middle-class girl, who has everything they could ever want, but instead of being mean, she is as nice as can be to everyone. While still spoiled, slightly naive, perhaps shallow, maybe even a bit selfish at times, when it comes right down to it, she is a loyal friend and doesn't use her money or popularity as an excuse to treat everyone like garbage — though the trope Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense is in play, especially since a particularly common sticking point is that characters of this type often believe their friends and other loved ones deserve to live just as well as they do.
Inspired by: Rory Gilmore (Gilmore Girls); Beth March (Little Women); Pike Trickfoot (Critical Role); Peggy Schuyler (Hamilton: An American Musical)

hi hi! this is a follower match up request xx. Firstly, I really adore your writings, and I think you have such a darling personality! Im impressed with your motivation to continue writing and I hope you continue to publish for a long time. This follower event is such a cute idea and I appreciate you putting so much time into it for others!!
Here’s some info for the matchup! I love to draw, read, write, anything creative! I kinda feed off of passion and i get overly excited /overly anxious pretty often. I do better when I have someone to calm me down when i’m getting too overwhelmed or when i’m getting too overwhelming for others. I’m very reliable and actually quite smart, but sometimes i get so overexcited I sell my intelligence short by seeming more hyper than smart... Despite seeming very extroverted, I tend to choose only one person who I actually trust myself with, so it would be nice if they could see through my ‘we can do it!!’ attitude and know i’m a very stressed person. I’m most comfortable around people who are shy or who can mellow me out. My zodiac is Taurus with some obvious Leo energy, and I’m INFJ! Pronouns are She/Her :)
Omg thank you so much 🥺❤️ I’ve genuinely enjoyed doing these match ups with y’all. It’s a really cool way to get to know some of you better and it’s fun writing cute little drabbles with snapshots of the hypothetical relationships. I always worry I’m gonna choose someone that the other person hates or sth but everyone has been so sweet and happy with their match ups so far 🥺 so this whole thing is genuinely making me happy too haha sorry I kinda rambled oops 💀 onto your match up
This may have a tiny something to do with the fact your description reminded me of Denki and I ship them together but I match you with Shinso Hitoshi!
He is absolutely fit to be your rock and help calm you down when you’re getting overexcited without going too far and dampening your passion. He keeps you grounded and your energy rubs off on him and helps him to get a little more expressive. He’ll see through your positive attitude immediately but he won’t call you on it, he’ll just offer you his support until you can trust him enough to let him help you more directly with your stress and anxiety.
You’re not sure how long you’ve been ranting for, but it’s probably been awhile when Shinso cuts you off.
“Slow down, Love. Take a minute,” he tells you gently.
You pause, nodding with a sheepish grin before forcing yourself to slow down for a second, taking deep breaths until your thoughts aren’t racing quite so much.
“Sorry about that,” you huff but Shinso shakes his head.
“Nothing to apologize for, just knew you needed a breath.”
You give him an appreciative look, taking more deep breaths as he studies you. He takes in every inch of your face, every little nuance of your body language, thinking something over before seeming to come to a decision.
“You’ve had a really long week, huh?” he finally asks.
You sigh with a nod.
“Cancel our plans for tonight.”
“What?”
You blink at him in surprise but he just shrugs as if it’s the simplest thing in the world.
“Cancel our plans,” he repeats.
“Won’t the others be disappointed?” you ask incredulously.
“They’ll get over it. You’re stressed and burnt out. The last thing you need is to deal with a bunch of people on top of that. Let’s just stay in and have a movie night. Ok?”
“Ok.”
“Ok. Now get over here and get comfortable, I already know what we should watch.”

jatp fanworks appreciation - day 1 (artists)
motivation - so in true me fashion and my aversion to brevity, i've made three (3) posts (see also writers, gifs/edits) to celebrate the wonderful people in this fandom who have made my jatp tumblr experience what it is; a community of people who simply shout into the void about their love of a ghost band and their fearless female leader. i've enjoyed simply being on the sidelines admiring everyone's love for the show, but i thought this would be a good time to really show my appreciation for all these wonderful people, because if i've learned anything from this pandemic, it's that there is NEVER a wrong time to tell someone that they are simply ✨the best✨.
disclaimer: i don't interact with most of these people personally and i simply absorb their content from afar and scream about how wonderful they are in the tags.
there’s definitely a bunch of people i am missing here because i’m horrible at cross referencing those on instagram to those on tumblr, so please know that there are SO many other artists i love that exist outside of this small list. (also if you saw that i just followed you... no you didn’t 🙈 i promise im following you on instagram.)
Once again, in alphabetical order:
@illgetmerope -> Hello, can I just say, I think you’ve been actively choosing violence with your recent art. That tombstone series was VERY uncalled for. But for real, your art elicits such emotion and as much as it pains me, I very much enjoy seeing it pop up on Instagram. Your tarot card series was so beautiful, and I admire your dedication to incorporating all the characters from the show into it!! I still cry about your drawing of the boys figuring out their band name.
@kidovna -> Your art is so fun and I honestly enjoy it SO goddamn much. The little doodles and comics you do are so smart and cute and I just really love your art style so much. Thank you for creating such wonderful art!! A special shout-out to your Double Trouble in Kpop outfits cause this was stellar.
@mamirugbee -> Please. Every time I see your art. I literally have to take a moment and remember to breathe. There is something about the way you draw Julie and Luke that just makes me lose all ability to function. So thank you, for sharing your amazing art with us. The set of soft Juke Kisses is on constant rotation as my phone background, and your Sailor Moon Juke literally made me gasp the first time I saw it.
@merry-the-cookie -> You are the captain of the Luke x Bobby ship and your little doodles and comics make me laugh so hard every time I see them. The way you draw movement and body language is exquisite. I think about the disembodied Caleb hand every day.
@theradioactivesoul -> You create absolute magic with acrylic paint. I do not understand how you get it to listen to you like that, but I am constantly in awe of your final pieces. I love your use of colours and the overall composition of your designs and the absolute insanity that is the SIZE of your paintings. Please know that your art brings me immense joy. Your Carrie piece is STUNNING.
@thesunwillart -> No words. Just a lot of Willex. Thank you for feeding my soul on a daily basis with your wonderful art. I also don’t know why, but the Mistletoe comic resurfaces in my brain every other day. I just think it would be very neat for them to do this. Also I am very much here for your Willex sock agenda.
@wendinella -> I love the way you draw expressions and body language!?! Everything about your art is so welcoming and warm and just so soft. I’m particularly obsessed with your Sunset Curve drawing because seeing the boys happy and pre-hotdog with Bobby really struck a chord in my heart.
@westywallowing -> Your art style is so unique and so warm and inviting and I simply adore it every time I see it pop up!! One of my absolute favs is the Juke mirror selfie simply because THEY ARE SHARING AIRPODS?!??! and they’re so wrapped up in each and look so happy. I wanna cry a little every time.
These are just some wonderful artists off the top of my head that I know are on Tumblr, and is in no way a definitive list of all the people I follow across all platforms for their wonderful art. Thank you to the people above, and to everyone in the jatp fandom who creates art in all formats. You guys visualize some of the coolest concepts and as a non-art person, it blows my mind every time.

I've really enjoyed your recent meta takes and was wondering if you could elaborate on your thoughts on Mandy + Ian and her going for Lip as a result (from your Ian Relationships meta)? I love reading about M+I and their connection is just so dear to me 😭
(P.S Thank you for being such a beacon of positivity in the Shameless fandom! I only got into the show during lockdown last year but it's become such a comfort so it makes me so happy to see positivity right now. ❤ )
Oh my gosh, thank you so much! You’re seriously too kind! I totally sympathize with you: Shameless has shot straight to the top of my list of comfort media since watching it right around the same time, so I’m really passionate about sharing the love around. 😃🧡
To me, one of the most important things to look at in this analysis is motives—who each of these characters are, what they desire for themselves, and how those factors fit together like a puzzle.
Mandy is in such a difficult position. It’s not as easy as saying that she’s a victim of abuse and wants nothing more than to get as far from her family as possible, because that’s simply not true. In s1, we see that she’s very comfortable in her house. She and Mickey exhibit your standard sibling animosity (and competition for Ian’s attention, unbeknownst to her), she makes breakfast for Terry even though she’s obviously not super respectful to him as a parent, and she clearly has a solid understanding of where her family stands in the neighborhood. In a way, she thrives on that in the beginning. At but a word, she can do serious damage to somebody without raising a finger herself. Viewing Ian’s lack of response to her advances as an insult, she takes full advantage of that. In s2, we know that she is being abused in such a heinous way. She takes charge of the situation, although not in a manner that would save her from it. She leaves the house for a while to avoid Terry; she holds him at gunpoint and forces him to accept what he already knows so that he won’t hurt Ian. When they talk afterward, she even recounts what happened in a way that makes it sound like no big deal—he was drunk, and he didn’t know who she was, so it’s whatever. (It isn’t. We know it isn’t. If this is going to be her reality, however, then she’s going to own it. No one will look down on her, especially not a Gallagher who’s barely ahead of her in social standing.)
We’ll pause there because so much of how Mandy changed afterward is tied to Lip, but we can already see that Mandy isn’t like Mickey. Mickey stuck it out with his family and very clearly fell into the same trap we’ve heard verbalized by other male characters, namely the notion that men can’t be abused. It doesn’t matter that that is entirely inaccurate—that’s what they’ve been taught in their environment. That’s what’s normal to them. (That’s part of the dramatic irony in this scenario: we can see how damaging and traumatic these events are, but the characters don’t have our perspective. I don’t think Mickey sees what happened to him as rape, just like Ian doesn’t see what happened to him as grooming or assault. That’s for the audience to comprehend in terms of gravity and should add to our sympathy for them.)
Mandy is different. Women are abused all the time in their neighborhood. It’s visible, and it’s pervasive. In s3, Mandy immediately teaches Debbie how to defend herself against it. She didn’t have to learn. Like not seeing themselves as victims is part of the boys’ culture, fighting not to be one is part of the girls’. But there’s a contradiction in her life: the Milkoviches are the neighborhood badasses, and while she shares in that, it’s limited by her sex. There is something she will never be able to overcome in order to see the same return on her reputation that Mickey and Terry do, not unless she gets out, which will be extremely difficult on her own merits. She’s living in poverty and not doing well in school. Her prospects are limited—she told the counselor so. Based on that conversation and her history with boys even before meeting Ian, she clearly sees one surefire avenue to get out of this hole she’s stuck in: a man with the resources to get out and take her with him.  If she’s lucky, it’ll even be a good man with a good heart who wants to do good in the world.
Now, let’s talk about Ian. (See what I did there?) This doesn’t need to be long because I’ve already talked so much about Ian already lately, but let’s wax poetic just a bit. Ian wants to be a good person. He wants to be able to get by, even be successful, without having to do it through scamming and stealing. He has goals and ambitions, and whatever anybody thinks of those ambitions, he did it with the mindset that he would be a hero—a protector. Along with that, he never gives up. When Mandy sets her brothers on him, he doesn’t hide forever—he seeks her out multiple times to fix the situation. When he can’t get into West Point, he doesn’t quit ROTC and ignore his dreams. He keeps going.
Not only is he someone who wants to be good for himself, but he wants to be good for others too. He shows Mandy kindness that she arguably hasn’t seen from anyone else before. He takes care of his family when hers tends to focus on themselves and their own individual survival more of the time. Ian has what she would have seen as the potential to get out, and at the time, that is what he wants. It isn’t as an escape for him, but as a way to facilitate his own dreams.
The problem? Ian is gay. We can see that that bothers her sometimes because she forgets. She goes in for a kiss in s2 and has to reel back, settling for a hug instead. She gets tired of hearing him talk about Kash in s1 and kisses him to shut him up, saying she just wanted to kiss her fake boyfriend. Ian isn’t attainable. If Ian leaves, he won’t take her with him as a partner, and she can’t ask as a friend. How desperate would that seem to someone who refuses to be put in a position where she even slightly perceives him to be pitying her? She can’t ask. Not Ian. She needs someone else, someone who is also good and capable of getting out of here—who can be convinced to even if they don’t want to. Someone she can also trust and has some sort of connection with. Someone who is a fixer, and someone she can draw in with the only thing she thinks she has of any value: her body.
That would be Lip. Not only does he meet all of those criteria at the time, but she knows she can trust him. She trusts Ian, and Ian is closer to Lip than he is to anyone else—even her. No, Lip doesn’t have any convictions or real desire to leave, but he has potential. She can work with that. She’s also there for the entire Karen saga, so she knows that Lip is someone who takes his responsibilities to the people he’s with very seriously and tries so hard to cultivate that connection. (For example, feeding him, making herself sexually available as often as possible, letting him stay with her when he can’t go anywhere else without any conditions, etc. We even begin to see her distancing herself from Ian a little bit by s3, putting all of her energy into what she has with Lip when, a year ago, they were sneaking around because she said she didn’t want Ian to know about them. That isn’t to say that Ian was seeking her out either, being quite distracted with Mickey, but it’s noticeable for me.)
Like Mickey, Mandy also has a very deep capacity for emotion and affection that seems incongruous with her personality a lot of the time. Also like Mickey, nobody brought that out in her—it was always there. As much as she seemed to hope that Lip would take care of her, the process of growing closer to him led to a level of affection. I don’t particularly read their relationship as being a deep one. Both of them were using the other, to an extent, to deal with their trauma in other areas of their lives. But that sort of thing can foster a kinship, a mutual understanding that transcends time and place and even the terrible stuff that people do to one another.
So, it doesn’t work out. Mandy is hurt and does something unforgivable. She then runs from Lip, straight into what she feels is her only alternative now: an abuser. What else is there for a girl in her position? Ian was unattainable because of his sexuality, but to someone beaten down again and again, perhaps she believed he was also unattainable because he was too good a person. Lip was unattainable despite her best efforts to bridge that gap because of what he had with Karen, but to someone beaten down again and again, perhaps she believed he was also unattainable because her position in his life was to give but never to take. With Kenyatta, all she does is give. She’s embraced being beaten down because what else is there? She leaves with him, believing there’s nothing for her there.
When she finally finds her strength, far from home but hopefully under better circumstances than when she lived in Chicago, she still follows the formula that has ruled her decision-making for some time: finding a place where she can have the control over her life that was never there before, but still with the belief that what she has to offer isn’t academic or able to be built or improved upon. Ian has worked past his perception that his body was what he had to offer, that it was what would provide him with the love he was looking for. But of course, he has. He’s had Mickey to love him when he’s healthy and love him when he’s lost a bunch of weight from a depressive episode spent in bed. He’s had his family to mess up here and there but ultimately love him so much.
Mandy doesn’t have that. She didn’t then either. She got what she wanted—she got out. She even implied that that was the most important thing by telling Ian that being born on the South Side doesn’t mean that’s where they have to stay. But Ian “got out” of the spiral of abuse he unknowingly suffered and the mindset that it fostered while Mandy didn’t. This isn’t to say anything negative about sex work, of course, only the mindset that led Mandy to this point in her life. And when she leaves the house for the last time, she looks at Lip after having asked about him, and they acknowledge each other the way that people who once knew each other do.
I’ve made the joke before that to Milkoviches, Gallaghers are like catnip. It’s flippant and funny enough when we consider how many of them have dated at one point or other. I’ve also said the Milkoviches are designed as a foil to the Gallaghers, a juxtaposed image of what they could have been had their situation been altered slightly. In s10, Mickey mentions how the Gallaghers are messed up and he’s never been happier to be a Milkovich, so there’s some awareness there that these are the two notorious families of the neighborhood, albeit for different reasons. For Mandy to see that not one, but two Gallaghers are out of reach? To perhaps feel as though she’s less than even them, or made to feel that way in her interactions with Lip? It’s the ultimate slap in the face.
She trusts Ian more than anyone else in her life, to the point where she will still call him to help her hide a body long after she’s left him and their home behind. But trusting Ian led her to loving Ian, and she couldn’t have him. Trusting Ian led her to meeting Lip, and if Ian was so good and loved Lip so much, he had to be worth it too. And to her, he was. The problem was that she felt that she wasn’t.
Self-fulfilling prophecies suck: when you’re treated like garbage by a neighborhood that sees your family as garbage and repeatedly experience things that will make you feel like garbage around people with the best intentions, you’ll start believing that you are, in fact, garbage. I think what we’ve watched with Mandy is a steady decline from a place of strength in herself and weakness in her environment to an overall place of weakness that she couldn’t escape. Not with Ian and, when she realized that wouldn’t happen, not with the only real alternative she thought she could trust since she trusted Ian so deeply.

Diamond in the Cold
Summary: While on the run, Marion is ready to abandon every last piece of the world she knows just to survive. After all, she hasn’t been herself in years. Then a stranger saves her life and she learns there is much more of her to rediscover than she’d ever suspected. Aladdin AU.
If I ever manage to get to it, there will be more chapters to this. For now, though, it exists as a one-shot indefinitely.
CW for discussions of murder, death and poverty.
"Let go of me!" Marion twisted her wrist viciously to no avail. Her strength was nothing compared to the man's grip on her. "I command you." The gleam of the golden domes of the palace flashed in her eyes from the distance to cut off her voice, her oxygen, her logic.
"You command me?" The man laughed amidst the anger still steaming from him, the sound piercing through her like a lightning bolt. He shoved his face into hers, the stench of his cologne exploding in her mind to make the world spin. The musky notes were like little daggers digging in her brain to spill blood as red as the apple she'd taken. "Perhaps you'd like to command the guard patrols?" the merchant growled like she'd only heard dogs do. "I'm sure they take orders from a common thief."
She had no power left. Not to her voice and not to her name. All of her authority had evaporated overnight as if she wasn't getting colder by the second despite the sweat beads rolling down her temple. Instinct burned through her, her muscles tensing before she pounced.
The unloaded fruits from the crates she hopped on rolled out from under her feet to nearly trip her on her second jump. Her soles connected with the man's chest and she kicked him in the ribs, using all her might to thrust herself away. The harsh tug on her arm blocked her vision with stars.
The limb was still attached and aching as her body thumped against the dirty street, her head ringing from the impact forcing all her air out. Pain pulsed through her but she pulled herself up to the sight of a bunch of guards surrounding her. The hurt buzzing in her bones had muffled the merchant's voice calling for them but she was cornered all the same, the sharp tips of their spears stalking closer inch by inch to poke her eyes out with the dead end she was facing.
A warm hand gripped her forearm as a blur of purple conquered her vision. "Come on!" A woman's voice sliced her loose from her stupor to allow her to be swept away.
Her arm protested against the rough motions and her feet scrambled to keep up despite eagerly following the path of escape. Her lungs burned fiercely, quite like the sight of the guards in her mind's eye. As tempting as it was, throwing a look over her shoulder would leave her plopping down and being dragged the rest of the way to wherever they were going or until they were caught. The guards could have fallen behind long ago thanks to the stranger's excellent navigation and maneuvering skills or they could be a breath away. She couldn't tell with the heart in her throat pounding louder than their feet hitting the ground as they rushed through an impossible to remember series of narrow streets and passageways. Her head was spinning again from all the turns they took to erase the directions of the world.
The woman ducked in a claustrophobic, shadowy alley that was more of a niche under the eaves of two houses and pulled her to the wall with their backs pressed against it.
The stranger's hand clamped over her mouth in the midst of her sucking in a breath. "Quiet!" the same urgent tone hissed in her ear to freeze everything around them. All that was left was the noise in her own system and the heat radiating from her savior and/or potential kidnapper next to her as the seconds trickled to an agonizingly slow rhythm.
The proximity of danger unfurled in a vicious burn as her lungs struggled to catch up with the distance she'd left between her and her past life. The darkness of the alley crawled over her body to swallow her but she had nothing to grasp at without exposing herself. She had to choke down the shivers from the black wrapping her on the inside the same way emptiness spread in her chest.
A galloping pack of guards passed the narrow slip between the houses without a glance spared in their direction to set her free of the tension of the chase in her muscles. Now for the next hurdle.
Marion's teeth sank into thin air as the woman released her. Despite the footing she'd lost, she had her eyes on the purple-haired mystery in one quick spin. She couldn't afford more surprises.
"You have to be the worst thief I've ever seen," the woman chided, her gaze skirting Marion's mouth. She'd caught her red-handed sending the heat spreading over her neck and cheeks. "What were you thinking?" Two golden eyes bore into her with the might of all the sunlight they caught out of the cover of the niche.
"I am not a thief!" Marion's pride reared its ugly head over the screaming wariness in her head. She had to find a way out of the city, not get deeper into trouble. "Why did you save me?" And how much would it cost her?
"Of course not! A thief wouldn't just grab an apple in plain sight. What did you expect? That he would give it to you with his regards?" Each word was another hard slap in the face but the woman's anger hit differently. Trusting a perfect stranger would be her biggest mistake yet. Regardless of how deep the lines carved into the face in front of her with each fiery breath to spell out the woman's concern. Why was she so involved with Marion's case if it weren't for personal gain?
"Answer my question!" Marion lifted her chin to stare any malicious intent down but her intimidating glare wasn't coming through.
The golden eyes narrowed at her–in contemplation or suspicion–and the woman stepped closer, invading her personal space. She studied her intently with Marion's stubbornness anchoring her in place where their faces were almost touching.
She could see every pore on the woman's face. The wrinkles were etched painfully into her ashen complexion. It was all an aggressive reminder of an old book with pages ready to crumble into dust despite the powerful knowledge they held. It drew Marion's fingers to run them over the coarse surface in hopes of soaking up the wisdom before it perished.
The down-turned corners of the woman's mouth tugging on her pale lips caught Marion short. They'd drain her blood to feed their own redness if she dared reach for them. The ginger of her curls wasn't nearly intense enough next to the woman's deep purple strands framing her face like a painting capturing the beauty and grace of a long lost time. Marion could swear the stranger was decades older than her–not to mention towering over her average height–if not for the wells of her eyes.
Light was pouring from them reined in by the lines of tiredness carved all around. The gold was still lively and stroking over the forest green of Marion's irises like the sun, with the warmth she'd known before adulthood had kicked her in the gut like an out of control horse.
The heavy fabric she'd draped herself in didn't have the thickness to cover her from the woman's gaze.
"That's the finest silk I've seen despite the fatigue."
It had torn off sending Marion falling in the tree under her chamber's window when she'd used old bed covers to climb out.
"And the supple leather..." The improvised cloak wasn't long enough to wrap her from head to toe leaving her trousers sticking out and drawing attention. "You're the princess," the golden stare burned through her pupils.
The world slipped from her sweaty palms. "I am not."
"What's your name then?"
"What's yours?" Marion challenged, eyes locked with the stranger. There was still time for the woman to bury her despite her help.
"Griffin... Your Highness." A sly glint set the golden on fire.
"Don't call me that!" Marion marched forward, forcing the other woman to crouch away. It was the first pulse of power she'd felt all day. She couldn't let go despite drawing her own blood where her nails dug in her palms. "I'm on the run from an arranged marriage. That's all." How she wished that could be the problem of her life. She'd stopped looking for love long ago. But she couldn't have given up on the very breath in her lungs.
"Doesn't mean you can't be the princess. And you are." Griffin had found her ground again and didn't give her a chance to protest. "You don't know enough about the life outside the palace, hence the expensive clothes and the near-death experience over an apple. Not to mention your attitude of spoiled royalty and your resemblance to the princess."
"How could you know what I look like?" Her eyes screwed shut but not nearly soon enough to protect her from the sight of her failure. She'd given herself away. "No one outside the palace has seen me before," she looked at Griffin for a sign of how deep she'd sunk. Maybe she could still escape. Griffin was faster than her and had better knowledge of the area but she was running for her life. All Griffin would get for her was money. Not enough to rival her motivation.
"I knew it." The smugness rolled off of Griffin in waves without suffocating Marion. There was too much softness to the genuine content for it to be malicious. But it could always be an illusion meant to trick her. She couldn't even trust her instincts. "There are rumors about you. You can't keep anything hidden forever, least of all the princess."
Marion wasn't so sure. In the palace the truth rarely survived and never long enough to see the sun.
"As you're proving here, running away from your responsibilities," Griffin's words cut to the bone with her sharp tongue stuck right in Marion's bleeding wounds.
"I am not running away. Just getting to know my city... my people." She had no people, no guards, no family. She was alone... She was a prey. She would die if she said the wrong thing to the wrong person. How to tell if Griffin was the right person?
"I thought you were on the run from an arranged marriage." Griffin raised a brow at her to punch her with her own weakness thrown in her face so casually. She was running out of options.
"No, I... lied about that. I would never abandon my responsibilities just to run away from a man." There were monsters after her.
"You're about as good a liar as you are a thief," Griffin spun around, her braid swinging after her like a whip the crack of which deafened Marion.
Would she turn her back on her and dissolve into the nothing she'd come from to save her life? No explanation, no price... Just the crippling loneliness that Marion had carried strapped to her back her whole life. It would crush her as if all of the capitol had been pushed on her head to balance like a book.
"If you really want to see the city, follow me," Griffin's voice drew tears from her and her retreating form as she walked further into the dark alley clawed at Marion's voice that refused to come out again.
She bolted after Griffin struggling to keep up with her and falling behind. Griffin maneuvered with ease through the crowded passageways, narrow even without the obstacles in the way, and climbed the rooftops like a monkey.
Marion had seen a monkey once when they'd been visited by the Linphean royals at the palace. It had been offered as a gift to them but her mother had rejected it. It hadn't been comely and refined enough to fit in. It had been for the best. The poor animal would have died in the palace. Everything did. Including her own mother who had been cut from diamonds and fire.
Marion shook her head to drop the images out of it. It was hard following Griffin anyway, no matter how intensely she focused on her frame. Her gaze never lingered long there, chased away by the pointy bones poking the skin from underneath. The air of light and friendliness to her was lost without the brightness of her eyes to mask away the sharp edges Griffin was made of. Her body looked worn away but she used the thinness to her advantage to make her way through places Marion had to hold her breath to pass through. Resilience cloaked her like an aura to transform her frailness into a testament of her will and determination to live.
Marion collided with the hard wall that Griffin was as she stumbled over the debris-covered staircase of a crumbling library. The floor creaked under every one of their steps and the wind howled menacingly through the holes in the walls with the possibility of knocking the ceiling on their heads.
Griffin's hands on her shoulders steadied her and guided her to an opening of missing bricks with a view of the city. "This is my favorite place... at night. You can see the stars sprinkled on the night sky."
Marion followed Griffin's gaze to the holes in the roof mercilessly letting through the scorching rays of the sun currently. At night it would be a beautiful sight, though. Patches of sky shining with starlight just for those that were awake as the world kept spinning towards morning. She'd spent full nights gazing at the infinite open space of the sky. No walls to keep you locked in, no people to stab you in the back for the crown breaking your neck. Just freedom.
The rumbling of her stomach was like a thunder sending her heart shooting up into her throat again where she couldn't swallow it instead of the food she didn't have. She folded her arms over her belly in hopes of muffling its desperation. Her chest was empty too but that Griffin couldn't hear so Marion hadn't had to train her gaze on the floor in an attempt to make it collapse and swallow her.
"Wait here."
Griffin was gone before Marion's eyes had touched her again. Now was her chance to run. She could make the trek down the stairs and disappear without sparing a glance at what she was leaving behind like Griffin had done. She had to. She had no idea what Griffin would bring back... or who, now that she knew her identity. But where would she go? She couldn't even fend for herself. She had no food, let alone a means of transportation outside the city. She couldn't have left behind a trail of gold or jewels from the palace.
She stepped closer to the hole framing the landscape like a painting. The floorboards wailed under her feet to twist her arm into backing away but her mind was captured by the view. She'd seen a lot following Griffin. She'd had her eyes locked on the unreachable shadow of a woman in front of her but she'd still caught glimpses of more than she'd wanted to.
The houses had been small and huddled together with cracks and holes in their facades and roof tiles scattered across the damaged roofs that surely leaked when it rained. The streets had been dirty and cramped in an impossible tangle, the ground unevenly covered with pavement that had dug into Marion's soles even through the hard leather of her shoes although Griffin had walked barefoot. The laundry they'd seen draped on clotheslines above the streets had been ragged and dusty, patching all over the fatigued fabric. She'd kept her eyes down and her step snappy when passing by people but she'd noticed a couple children playing with pebbles and sticks in the dirt.
The large-scale view from the library was gut-wrenching – ruins and poverty everywhere. As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but little houses barely waiting for the next snow to cave in and bury their occupants. How could a glorious kingdom like Domino fall from grace so fast? Her mother's illness had lasted just a couple years before she'd been disposed of. What had the three old witches done to destroy Marion's land so promptly?
A howl startled her with its tangibility before she figured it was the building's announcement of Griffin's return and not her own heart. Her muscles tensed, ready to pounce as she turned around to find Griffin with a satchel thrown over her shoulder. There was a weight straining it from inside but it definitely wasn't a battalion of guards coming to drag her back to her death in the palace.
"Here," Griffin reached in the satchel and pulled out a loaf of bread. It was fresh, the warm scent wafting off of it making Marion salivate. She'd been out on the streets for half a day and she'd already regressed into an animal. "Careful not to burn your fingers, princess." Griffin grinned at her and handed her a third of the hot bread. The rest she put away in the satchel instead of biting into it.
"So you're a competent thief?" Marion chomped down on the bread in her hands. She had to strangle the moan coming out at the divine taste. She had more questions but her stomach was only concerned with its own emptiness. How Griffin could resist the call of the hot bread in her satchel was beyond her.
"Someone has to be," Griffin smirked at her again but her eyes remained unmoved. At least until she focused on Marion and her pitiful attempts not to drop the loaf as it scorched her fingers. "Warned you," Griffin chimed at her but the playful sound died at the look of the city below them. "I hate this place in the daytime." She picked up the edge of a brick that had broken off and threw it at the wall opposite of her, making more of the red chip away.
Marion swallowed with a degree of difficulty but didn't comment on the potential danger of bringing down an already collapsing building. "Why does the city look like that?" Budgeting for public‐facility and infrastructure maintenance and repair was a main concern of the ruler and the royal advisors. It should have made life easier and safer for people. The failure was unbearable to look at.
"It's always been like that." Griffin could have pushed her off the building and it would have been less painful. She stopped breathing for the second time that day. "It's getting worse, of course, and fast at that but it's been a couple decades since all of this started."
What? Impossible.
"What about the maintenance?" The bread was burning her fingers but she was so cold on the inside she could barely feel it.
"Maintenance?" Griffin's voice was cracking ice and Marion would drown in the water below. "Only certain esteemed areas get maintenance. The inner city around the palace and the main streets officials take in and out of the city. The estates of influential merchants here and there. And that's about it. Even schools and museums are falling apart along with other cultural centers. Look around if you find it unbelievable," Griffin gestured to the disemboweled library around them.
Marion approached her hesitantly with slow and light steps she hoped wouldn't disturb the place or Griffin. "Do you... read?" It was an insensitive question, or at least way of asking, especially when the answer was obvious. But the rawness Griffin was bleeding filled the silence in her chest, the stillness of her lungs.
"My parents taught me when I was little. They hoped I'd go to school but we couldn't afford the textbooks. I wasn't good at breaking and entering back then. I have a small collection of books at home that I've stolen and read over and over again until I memorized them because I was scared one day they would fall apart in my hands from all the reading and terrible storage conditions." Griffin's eyes were on fire and melting like lava Marion has never seen in person before. Only through pictures. It would leak out of her eyes. "I had to get my smarts and skills on the street while my parents worked their lives away for scraps. Looking at the city reminds me that I am not alone in that suffering. So many other people know it as well. Every day many of them don't make it." Griffin stepped towards her as if to run her down and Marion had to retreat.
"No," Marion shook her head, the loaf crushed in her fist for the crumbs to rain through the holes in the floor.
"This is your kingdom, princess," she poked her in the chest with a finger. "Seen enough of it yet?" Griffin grabbed her hand and dragged her between the rubble covering the floor. "Time to go back to the palace."
"I can't," Marion pulled back only to find herself in an iron grip again.
"I'm sure you'll find your way. You can ask someone." Griffin was cold like the crown she'd worn on her head, like the corpse of her mother as she'd imagined it. She'd never seen it, concerned with not becoming one as well.
"I can't!" Marion dug her heels in the fragile remains of the library. It would either save her or bury them both. Better than being thrown to the wolves. "They'll kill me," she cried at the unmoved mask that Griffin's face had become. "My mother's advisors got rid of her and they are lying to the whole kingdom about it. They wanted me to marry their son," Griffin didn't question the logistics of that – whether because she was familiar with Valtor's family situation and his three mother figures or because she didn't care. "I refused because they'd use him to steal my throne so they've been trying to kill me ever since. My sister has agreed to marry in my stead and I had to leave her behind and run." It all spilled from her against her better judgment if she'd ever had it.
There were no tears to accompany her story. She hadn't cried for her mother and she couldn't cry for herself now. She wasn't done for yet. Maybe Griffin could help.
"So you are running away like a coward?" Griffin let go of her hand so that she wouldn't go down with Marion as well when she shattered.
"Weren't you listening to me?" How could she say that? She knew what it was to struggle for survival. They were just young girls forced to fight for their lives. They shouldn't be attacking each other.
"I heard, yes. You're going to leave a kingdom that's already falling apart in the hands of three monsters that took down the royal family – supposedly the most powerful family in the world." Griffin approached her again to loom over her. "You're dooming your people by abandoning them."
Marion gritted her teeth. "My death won't help anyone." She looked at the shapeless bread in her fist. "Thanks for the lunch," she shoved past Griffin. Any second in those ruins could cost her the freedom she'd always wanted, the freedom she was reaching for now.
"Go ahead!" Griffin goaded her. She would not turn. She would not fall for it. "Run. You'll be dead by the end of the day."
Marion whipped around, her balance not sufficient for the terrain. She had to put her arms out to steady herself on her feet – like a helpless baby chick. Not the threat she'd been trying to pose even though Griffin already knew she was out of options.
"I'm not going to sell you out. I'm not stupid enough to put myself in the line of sight of those monsters," Griffin saw right through her. Wouldn't she stop doing that? It left her skin crawling with all the things she couldn't bury deep inside herself now that Griffin had pulled them out to unravel them. "You will be your own death. You have no plan, no idea where you're going, no resources or skills to fend for yourself, let alone reclaim the throne. You'll kill not just yourself but the whole kingdom."
Marion's last warmth flickered out inside her. "I should just lay down and die then? Decay like this place?" She'd been promised the world on the very day of her birth. How had she come to having no prospects at all? How had she lost a whole palace, a whole kingdom?
"You should fight. You can't abandon the people that depend on you, and yourself."
She'd never been herself. It hadn't been becoming of a princess. And now she was a nobody. "How am I supposed to fight if I can't even save myself?" It was easy for Griffin to drop the paradox on her head for her to solve because of her blood. She hadn't asked for a crown or a throne. Just the opportunity to make her own choices.
"That's it. You've already given up on fighting for yourself, for who you are. You're insulted I suggested that you're betraying your people but you're passing the crown like it's not your birthright and responsibility."
"I am not the crown." All her life the crown on her head had been the only thing fitting. Every other part of her had been imperfect, unworthy, insufficient for the queen her mother had been... for the queen she was supposed to be. Without the crown on her head she didn't even have a home. Maybe she could have a life.
"No, but it's the people that wear the crown that make all the difference. Look at this!" Griffin gestured around them. "This is what they did without the crown, without a throne. Are you really going to give it to them?"
"It's very easy for you to say that when you haven't felt its weight."
"You think it's easy? You think this," Griffin pointed to the ruins of the city, "is easy? We live and die by their rules just like you. Your problems are our problems and vice versa. This is your kingdom, your people, and you know nothing about it!"
"Stop saying that!" Marion's shout startled her as well. Too loud. Just like they always said. The people needed a queen, not her. She'd fit the mold no matter how much of herself she'd had to shed away.
"It's the truth." Griffin didn't rise to her level but didn't quit either. She probably didn't know what the word meant. "You know nothing about your own city. You're a foreigner in your land. If you go out there, you won't make it out alive. You'll get lost in the maze of streets or get captured by the guards or get yourself killed for a bite of food. You can't survive a city you don't belong in and that doesn't belong to you."
"You don't know me!"
"You don't know me either. You know nothing about none of your subjects. I have a mother and a sister, too, that will starve to death without me." She'd been saving the bread for them. "I risked my life to save you. Not because you're the princess, but because if we don't take care of each other, we all die. You can't survive by running from your roots. I didn't want to be a thief, I hate this view in the daylight, I only eat after my mother and sister have. This is my life. I don't like it but I live it because if I throw that one away, I don't get to pick another one. I die. And there are people who depend on me, including you, today in particular, and I can't abandon you. I can't abandon myself because one day I might look at the city and see it rise from the ashes but that will never happen if I join them."
She was right. If Griffin had given up in the past, Marion would be dead right now. And if she gave up, more people would suffer and die. She would suffer and die. "Help me."
"What?" First time she'd taken Griffin by surprise.
"Help me. You know the city so you can guide me. You can be my voice of the people. And your breaking and entering skills might be useful. You said it yourself – my problems are yours. Help me solve them so you can look out to the city without dying every time you do." She'd offer her hand if she was sure Griffin would take it. It was an overwhelming proposal.
"I work alone."
"And where has that gotten you?"
Griffin considered her for a moment before looking her over from head to toe. "We have to get you some clothes. You look like a walking pot of gold."
"How did you manage to make that offensive?" Marion shook her head but a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. The first one since her mother had died.
"I have many talents, princess," Griffin curtsied theatrically. The first clumsy action Marion had seen from her. They had a lot to learn about each other.
"My name is Marion." For the first time it didn't sound like a death sentence.

Hey hey! Hope its alright if I ask for a  red velvet truffle.
My pronouns are he/him, I'm bi, zodiac is virgo, and my mbti is ISTP-T. People say I come off as intimidating upon first meeting which is interestingggg. Lol, though once you get to know me I'll probably end up being annoying. I'm a pretty friendly person once I get over my shyness and get to know someone, I like to make alot of jokes and make people laugh although my humour kind of really sucks. I'm a really really lazy person. I'm a bit creative I think!! I try to be atleast. I'm very indecisive and work best around people who are extremely patient with me. I'm also very touchy person...I like being able to wrap my arm around someone, playfully jab someone, etc etc. I'm awful at comforting people n I'm a massive night owl. I tend to be very moody and I have the worst temper ever =_= I tend to get angry over the smallest things. I have an irrational fear of the dark and a not so irrational fear of failure and loneliness lmfao. I tend to lean towards people who are patient with me and have a similar sense of humour as me! I try to avoid people with a quick temper because I hate the idea of constantly clashing with someone </3.
I'm super into making art and bakingI really like drawing! I really enjoy showing off my art to my friends and or making drawings for friends ^_^ <3. I also like baking things, I especially like it when someone is accompanying me while baking and helping me. I adore music not to be dramatic but idk what I'd do without it LMFAO(fave genre is modern rock nd indie pop according to my spotify) . I'm a big big cat person they make me so insanely happy. I enjoy horror things and video games though I may get crazy competitive. My favorite aesthetic is grunge.. Boring ik.. I don't have a grip on any aspirations I want, I guess something I'd like to do is be BETTER LMFAO and not.. Fail ofc IDK
Ok! Thats all I hope its not too much/enough to work with lol. Have a nice day/night💪
Hey hey yourself! I think you’re the first he/him I’ve filled an order for, so welcome and thanks a bunch for both requesting and waiting for so long 🤗 I got stuck between a bunch of options for you, but overall I think you’d have the best relationship with...
Ochako Uraraka!
«────── « ⋅ʚ♡ɞ⋅ » ──────»
Ochako might not seem like your type at first, what with her rep as the cheery airhead, but I think that you two would end up super close! Her sociability would break through your “intimidating” exterior and straight to your friendly and humorous side, which she shares in spades—you two probably end up annoying the whole class over how loud you laugh over the dumbest things, not that you two notice nor care >:P
She doesn’t worry too much about your temper (she has made friends with Bakugo after all <.<) and helps you either fix or get over whatever may be bothering you with her skills in empathy and observation. It also makes her good at comforting people, and an excellent motivator to push you through your more sluggish moments. Some might get overwhelmed or fed up in her position, but there’s nowhere else she’d rather be, cause in Ochako’s mind, there’s few other places you can find someone so fiery and passionate but insanely creative at the same time! Whatever you make she’ll get hyped over it in an instant, and gobble almost all of it up when it’s your food rather than art lol
In fact, Ochako adores baking with you even if she’s not really sure what to do, but it makes for some really cute teaching moments lmao as she’s got a massive sweet tooth. But it’s not just baking; you guys can also be found locked in gaming battles that’ll draw out her own competitiveness and make for some exciting matches, or cooing over stray cats together while feeding and playing with them before school, or sharing headphones on one of your beds and listening to albums all into the night since I can easily see her sharing your taste, too.
Also, she’s a Capricorn, which is an excellent match with your Virgo! You’re both super down to earth, honest, and steadfast in your beliefs and goals (even if they’re not fully defined yet in your case but that’s totally okay :D) so your relationship is full of understanding and strong feelings, making for a loyal and long-lasting connection.
On the surface it might seem like an odd pair, with her bubblegum vibe contrasting with your grunge one, but you’re more similar than you might think! Not only do you guys have the best time when spending it together, not only is she super affectionate and playful and matches your touchiness, but she supports you and your fears, the irrational and profound all with the same energy, helps you grow as a person, and all in all just complements you perfectly 🥰

im really quiet at first but when you get close to me i can get rlly loud. not all the time tho, talking too much exhausts me :d i appear as a very boyish person to others so i hide the fact that i like stuff like sanrio, pokemon, star butterfly vs. the forces of evil- ok i gotta stop. i like sending my friends weird memes at 3am. the reaction they give in the morning feeds my soul 👌 🍰
im a multimedia arts student!! i love editing photos and videos so thats what i do a lot on my free time. i write and draw too! but im not confident in it yet. im considered tall in my country so a lot of professors recommend me to be a student athlete, but i h a t e sweating.. i like watching people play tho! Hey! Thank you for your request! I'm sorry it took so long for me to get to. Hope you like it anyways!
I'd ship you with...
Tumblr media
Kuroo Tetsurou!
• I'm gonna assume you are in the class same as Kuroo for this, hope that's okay.
• He was walking with Yaku having another debate about their preferences for girls when he suddenly pointed at you and said "like her!", which caused you to freeze. Kuroo also froze as he realised what he did. He then ran up to you to apologise and explained that he was arguing about preferences and he was saying that you looked attractive. He then awkwardly blushed and jogged off, apologising as he went back to Yaku and the team.
• Honestly you were really shocked about the situation. Like...what just happened? This boy suddenly just came up to you, said you were attractive then left.
• You then saw him and Kenma the next day and he stopped and stared at you for a moment, before going over to you looking slightly flustered. He then said in a slightly nervous voice, "Uhm, I'm sorry about what happened yesterday, but the truth is I have kind of noticed you for a while. You look really pretty and I kind of wanted to talk to you. I noticed as well that you tend to doodle in class and when I glanced over, I thought you drawings were super cute...a-anyways, we don't have volleyball practice after school today, so did you want to go to a café with me later? My treat."
• Kenma quietly judged Kuroo because of how creepy he was being but also because he knew exactly what he was doing.
• You agreed without thinking since the whole situation caught you off guard, and he happily thanked you and walked off, saying he'd come find you after school. Then after he left, you realised what you'd done.
• You waited for him outside the school and he finally caught up with you, but Kenma was also with him. He then took the two of you to a cat café because of course he did and Kenma, who read the mood and realised he was third wheeling, left the two of you alone to talk while he went to play with the cats.
• It was a bit uncomfortable at first, but after Kuroo settled down a little, he became super easy to talk to and was really good at keeping the conversation going, which helped you to relax as well. Before you knew it, the two of you started sharing memes and cackling at them together. You could feel Kenma's judgement from across the room.
• Kuroo asked if he could have your number and you agreed. You sent him a 3am meme hoping he wouldn't get mad, and the next morning he sent you a bunch of messages about how he was wheezing and he couldn't breathe because of how funny the memes were, so you decided to add him to your target list of sending memes. Eventually, Kuroo started to participate as well, sending you memes as well as people on his team. Some found it funny, but others Yaku and Kenma got mad at Kuroo, which only motivated him to do it more. He also started to occasionally send some to your friends as well.
• You were afraid to be more open with Kuroo because you didn't want him to think badly of you because of the less "boyish" things you liked. One day, though, he caught you looking at pictures of Sanrio plushies on your phone, which made you panic. But he just smiled and said, "I like those too," which was really shocking. You assumed he was just trying to be nice, but then he pulled out his keys, which had a Kuromi keychain attached.
• (Apparently, he and Kenma found out about the Sanrio characters when they went to an arcade as kids and they bought each other keychains. Kenma bought Kuromi for Kuroo and Kuroo bought Gudetama for Kenma. Kenma's keychain was attached to the case for his Animal Crossing Switch. He told you to keep this a secret since he knew Kenma would get embarrassed, but it eventually came up in conversation at one point and Kenma showed his keychain.)
• As you and Kuroo got closer, so did you and Kenma. He was really good at noticing when something was off and he'd listen to your concerns. You also realised that you had a lot of common interests and you felt comfortable sharing your hobbies with him and Kuroo. When Kuroo saw the two of you talking comfortably about Pokémon one time, he had a really sincere smile on his face because he was amazed at how well the two of you got along and how you glew when you talked passionately about your hobbies. He fell in love with you a little more.
• You realised one day that you weren't exactly sure what your relationship with Kuroo was. You were friends of course and you'd spend a lot of time together, but you wanted more, you were just afraid to say since you didn't want to ruin what you had. Kenma noticed you seemed to be deep in thought and you told your feelings to him, to which convinced you to confess to Kuroo, saying it would make him happy.
• You nervously said to Kuroo that you'd like to date, and he just kind of froze and then said in a cracked voice "s-sure!" He then apologised for the strange response and then confessed that he'd had feelings for you for a long time, he just didn't know how to tell you. He then kissed your hand and thanked you for confessing, then he ran off to get ready for practice.
• Kuroo seemed to be a little bit more on edge with you now you were dating. When you confronted him about it, he said he wasn't sure how comfortable you were with displays of affection and the reason he was on edge was because he wasn't sure whether he was okay to hold your hand, hug you, kiss you, etc. You let him know what your terms were and he relaxed a little knowing what his boundaries were.
• You were glad Kuroo was taller than you because you loved being able to bury yourself in his chest or shoulder whenever he hugged you. And despite his tough-looking exterior, he really loves cuddling and he's super good at it and showing his affection in soft ways.
• Kuroo really loves watching you draw and edit. He either quietly watches you do it or he sits off to the side and let's you get on with it, maybe looking at you every now and then and smiling at how pretty you look. Either way, he is fine with quietly hanging around when you work and he does his best not to disturb you, but also likes to encourage you to take breaks and cuddles you when you do so you can recharge.
• The first time you let your hair down in front of Kuroo he just...stopped? You got confused because you didn't know why he reacted like that, but he had to turn his head away and cover his face because of how much he was blushing. Even if you don't think highly of yourself, to him you are the most stunning, attractive person ever, both in terms of how you look and your personality.
• Kuroo really appreciate you supporting him during matches, even if you don't go crazy cheering for him. Just knowing you're there is enough for him to feel grateful.
• The club members love you as well. Not only are you Kuroo's weakness which they sometimes like to exploit for entertainment, you also get along with everyone super well. They were so shocked when they saw Kenma talking to you so naturally. They started inviting you out whenever they'd go out as a team since you were practically a part of it now.
• Kuroo is super good at showing how much he loves you, even just through little things. You also make him super happy just by being you. Arguing with Yaku that day was the best thing to ever happen to him.
I was gonna pair you with Yaku but I felt like I was only doing that since I've already done Kuroo as a matchup before, but honestly I think Kuroo is a super good match. Hope you enjoyed this!
Sorry this is so long btw, I am in Kenma and Kuroo loving hours, so this was fun to write! To be honest, I could have written more if I wanted to, but I didn't wanna drag this out too much.

Death Note Audio Drama 10
Tumblr media
Disc 10: Karma Police - a summary / partial translation
Prior translations / an explanation as to what the fuck this is.
After I majorly burned myself out on doing these, I am BACK with the rest of this drama in tow. 10 down, 2 to go.
In this: nonsensical but wild shinigami lore, confirmation of ghosts, an actually sad dialogue of grief over Soichiro, and transparently agenda-based bad writing decisions that make me lose my mind with how bad they are.
_____________________
We start with a dramatic audio sequence from Kira’s Kingdom. Topics are the rise of pseudonyms in social media and unjustified Kira killings based on rumors online. There is also... a studio guest!
DEMEGAWA: Here in the studio, I can welcome Teru Mikami. Prosecutor in new Kira cases from all over the world.  I, Hitoshi Demegawa, take your calls, read your mails, listen to your stories. Whole lifestyles are overhauled, behaviours defined anew. How we approach other people is often only dominated by fear. And... love. The love of Lord Kira. This is Kira’s world. We’re just living in it.
(Note by me: what the fuck does this mean??? Literally what the fuck does any of that mean?? How is a case a Kira case?? He’s pro-Kira not anti-Kira?? Hello?? On that note, DEMEGAWA IS ALSO PRO-KIRA??? WHY IS HE SAYING ANY OF THIS???? The fact that the audio drama writers had zero commitment to even trying to make Kira-following believable in story irritates me a lot. They do so much obvious moralizing at the cost of the story. Like yeah, Kira is bad, but a sane listener doesn’t need you to literally punch them in the face with it............................)

TITLE MUSIC
______________________
Mello meets Ms Sugai, the mafia lawyer from last disc. They’re at the beach, waiting for the drone to arrive. Ms Sugai is very demanding, definitely views herself as the boss here. She takes Rod Ross’ role in this drama.
The drone gets there, Sugai nitpicks Mello’s methods, Mello stays calm, and the drone is retrieved and brought to Sugai’s place.
_____________________
L and Shidoh arrive in Tokyo. Shidoh remarks how it was very different last time he got there (after the war). Shidoh suspects the war is the cause of shinigami having gotten so lazy, since a lot of them didn’t have to kill for ages after this. (Nevermind that this is complete bullshit because shinigami don’t have anything to do with ‘normal’ deaths and thus would not actually have had to work any at a war unless they were directly painstakingly orchestrating it, lmao.)
L wonders if youkai in Japanese folklore. are just half-remembered sightings of Shinigami. Shidoh isn’t sure.
Shidoh also explains that L’s body is going to change. Everyone starts out with the body they died in and then changes. Shidoh speculates it is related to the manner of death or maybe the personality of the person.
L: Are you trying to say all Shinigami started out as humans?
SHIDOH: Not necessarily. But even a human will change over the course of centuries. I don’t know, L. Maybe your teeth are going to get longer and longer. Or! Horns may come from your skull. Or you’ll just keep growing taller. Death is only the beginning.
The two of them arrive at the Task Force Headquarter. Shidoh goes in, L leaves.
_______________________________
Soichiro is trying to get into the headquarters despite having already had his retirement party. But officially he’s still employed - yet he can’t get in because he’s suspended after stealing the Death Note to free Sayu.
_______________________________
Shidoh approaches Ryuk about his notebook. He demands it back, but Ryuk doesn’t know where it is.
_______________________________
Matsuda and Light are sorting through Watari’s huge amount of physical files that he kept in a storage room. None of that seemed relevant to them 5 years ago. It’s mostly data about his charity work, including his orphanage for gifted children, Wammy’s House. There is a file on N, but there is no picture, only a drawing. Likewise with M. M has a juvenile criminal record in his file. They deduce M is the one who stole the Death Note.
______________________________
Sugai comes to talk to the mafia guy the police arrested. Since she’s his lawyer. She tells him that he has to sit his time in jail for a few months until she gets him out. She also dictates what to state as his testimony.
______________________________
Shidoh then approaches the dude. The dude is appropriately shocked. Shidoh wants him to say where the Death Note is.
______________________________
Light sees this freak-out on the camera feeds and assumes a shinigami is in the cell. Light figures out that Ryuk handed over a stolen Death Note. He’s highly amused.
The mafia guy tells Shidoh where the headquarters are (on the other end of Tokyo) and the investigators who are listening in now also know.
______________________________
Sugai is incredulous that the weapon they got is just a book. She’s immediately wants to test the book. She and Mello discuss the rules and capabilities of it.
______________________________
Light decides not to tell Near about these developments. The Task Force wants to get the notebook back themselves. They scheme how to storm the building, there is a bunch of technical talk about methods here.
______________________________
Sugai and Mello still discuss the rules. Shidoh appears and immediately tells them the 13 day rule is fake.
______________________________
Misa and Light are at a public swimming pool. Light chose the location so nobody can wear a bug and also to drown out noise with the whirlpool. Misa is excited about the outing. Light tells Misa to get rid of the notebook. She’s supposed to kill the mafia first, then give the book up.
______________________________
Soichiro is tending to the roses. Sachiko is giving gardening advice, Soichiro doesn’t know shit about gardening. Sachiko is super happy Soichiro is home and wants to make out, wohoo. But Soichiro gets a call from Kira, rip.
Kira is Misa giving him the plan to storm Mello’s HQ, just like in canon.
______________________________
Mello starts wondering why someone would write the fake rules. And he figures that Kira wanted the police to read the fake rules, to give him an alibi.
_____________________________
The Task Force gets Kira’s Death Note. Soichiro has objections against the plan, morally. Everyone else is just like ‘eh’.
______________________________
Shidoh asks for his book back, Mello and Sugai don’t want to return it.
______________________________
The raid on the HQ is happening! Light is also in with them, he even has a gun.
MATSUDA: Is your weapon ready to fire?
LIGHT: Yes, Matsuda. It is. I’m a real detective.
MATSUDA: For less than a week. How many shoot-outs have you been at?
LIGHT: One, this one included.
MATSUDA: Right. You may officially be my boss, but I still have 7 years on you. This is not a game.
LIGHT: You don’t have to tell me that.
People start dying and the raid is starting.
______________________________
Sugai and Mello notice the attack. Shidoh suggests the eye deal so they can defend themselves.
Sugai also suggests Mello pretend to take her hostage, since officially she is not a criminal and can thus count as a civilian hostage. Mello agrees. They try to take the back door to escape.
Shidoh is surprised nobody wants the deal.
Outdoors, Soichiro yells at them to give up. Mello recognizes his voice and knows his name. Sugai suggests he kill him. They realize neither of them has the book on them.
______________________________
Soichiro meanwhile finds the left-behind Death Note, hurray. Mello and Sugai do their hostage plan to get him to give up the notebook. Sugai screams really melodramatically.
Light also enters the scene but a surviving mafia goon has a target on him. Soichiro meanwhile forgot his weapon on some table, rip.
The situation is dire, Ryuk tempts Soichiro into the eye deal in a lengthy sequence of pointing out just how dire the situation is. Specifically the motivator here is that Light’s life is in danger. Soichiro takes the deal for Light.
_______________________________
The stand-off continues. More and more people from each side arrive at the scene and its more complicated. Soichiro reveals that he has Mello’s name (he pronounces it Michael) and threatens people with it.
Ryuk helps (?) by turning off the light for a moment, which causes people to shoot wildly. Soichiro runs to the roof, injured. Mello and Sugai chase him.
______________________________
Sugai decides to escape without the notebook and fucks off. https://twitter.com/MiyataVld/status/1153658045374746624
______________________________
Ryuk comes to Soichiro and says he ‘has’ to write his name. I don’t know how the fuck shinigami lore works in this. Light comes up to the roof and wants Soichiro to give him the notebook. Shidoh steps in, Soichiro gives HIM the notebook, Light is really pissed about it.
SOICHIRO: We made it, son. We’re finally rid of it.... nobody can misuse it anymore.... And I still have the eyes.
LIGHT: Father...
SOICHIRO: I can see you now son... your name... your death date... do you know what that means?
LIGHT: You can’t go father! The ambulance is on the day. Stay strong. Look into my eyes. Look at me.
SOICHIRO: As I can see... it means... you’re not Kira....
LIGHT: Yes, father, I’m not Kira. But you have to hold on and tell it to the others as well. You can’t die, stay strong! Tell them what you’re seeing! Tell them... Father?! [sobbing noises]
______________________________
Soichiro’s funeral. A Christian sermon again, because who cares these guys are Japanese, I guess.
MATSUDA: Chin up, Light. He’d be proud of you.
LIGHT: Thanks, Matsuda.
AIZAWA: My condolences.
LIGHT: Thank you. Come on, mom. Let’s go home.
SACHIKO: You couldn’t change it either, huh...?
LIGHT: Mom!
SACHIKO: I had him for two days! I waited 35 years and you only left him to me for two. days.
SAYU: Mom... Don’t say that! Not here!
SACHIKO: He was retired. Why was he even there?
LIGHT: He saved my life.
SAYU: And mine, too.
SACHIKO: Hah.
SAYU: He was a hero.
SACHIKO: I didn’t want a hero. I wanted my husband.
SAYU: Calm down, mom...
SACHIKO: Don’t you dare tell me to calm down. I lost him to the police. I lost my whole life to the police! And now they’ve got you, too.
LIGHT: He was proud of me.
SACHIKO: Of course he was. You’re just like him. It’s as if he was still standing in front of me, ready to doom another woman who will spend her life waiting for him to come home!
MISA: Sachiko, please...
SACHIKO: Run while you still can, Misa. It’s not worth it! [sobbing] Why did you let him go?! Why didn’t you talk him into staying home?!
__________________________
RYUK: Humans are so funny.
L: You’re a monster.
RYUK: What the hell?? How did you get here?
L: Surprised to see me?
RYUK: Uhh, yeah? You’re... uh... You’re dead.
L: People keep telling me that lately.
RYUK: What’s going on here? Are you.... Wait. Are you buried here? Is this just a common haunting?
L: Nope.
RYUK: In that case you’re just an echo, you see? It’ll fade soon.
L: Do I sound like an echo?
RYUK: No. You can’t just come back from the dead. That’s impossible.
L: Are you sure?
RYUK: There are rules.
L: And do you also know the one that says you’re not allowed to steal someone else’s death note? That’s one of those rules, isn’t it?
RYUK: Aaah, that’s how Shidoh found me.
L: We helped each other out.
RYUK: But he’s back home now. He left you here.
L: Yeah, there’s still a few things I need to do.
RYUK: You know that there is only a single way for you to still be here? There is only one way for this to end.
L: Yes.
RYUK: Wow, L. You really have to carry a major rage inside of you.
L: I think I merely have a reason.
RYUK: Then just wait, buddy.
L: What?
RYUK: Light has got his teeth in your successor. You know, that miniature version of you.
L: Near. What can Light do to him?
RYUK: He’s close. Light is gonna turn his lights off.
L: But he doesn’t know his real name. He can’t kill him.
RYUK: He doesn’t need that. He just needs to cut him off from reinforcements. Cheers to the chief inspector!
____________________________
A press person tries to do damage control on Trump’s terrible politics. Many Trump jokes here. I am so tired of this drama reminding me Trump exists.
Trump then announces that the US won’t oppose Kira anymore.
___________________________
We’re still at the cemetery. Light is chilling there, as Ryuk urges him to go out. Light asks Ryuk what happens after death and wonders if Soichiro might know the truth now, wherever he is. Ryuk doesn’t answer conclusively. He accuses Light of being scared of his karma and scared of his father’s disapproval.
Light kept a few pages of Shidoh’s notebook. He killed Sugai with it. Light still wonders if his father is watching.
Ryuk says that ‘almost’ nobody ever came back from the dead.
__________________________
Mikami is on a debate program, opposing Paula Virilio. They’re discussing the US’s recent decision. This discussion is BIZARRE and I don’t understand why a single writing decision in it was made. Like, it just makes me so mad. I am solely translating it so everyone else can be mad with me.
TAKADA: Shocking statements from the US president today. But are they really so susprising? That’s what I want to ask general prosecutor Teru Mikami. Mr. Mikami?
MIKAMI: Good evening. No, it really isn’t surprising. I think this recent deed by the US mirrors are global, fast-growing movement that isn’t afraid to call Kira’s actions good.
TAKADA: It probably isn’t true that there aren’t any wars or crimes anymore.
MIKAMI: No. Kira’s actions are rather localized. He pays almost no attention to the third world. And not all crimes happen intentionally or are able to be put to trial without reasonable evidence.
TAKADA: And for you that’s alright?
MIKAMI: I think Kira is listening. I think he is watching us at this very moment. I think he reacts to movements and campaigns in the public. If his punishments reflect the worries of, say, the Japanese middle class, then that’s also a... how should I put this... function of his loudest supporters.
TAKADA: You’re saying that if we were more interested in, for example, Simbabwe, then Kira would do the same?
MIKAMI: That’s my firm belief.
TAKADA: Also in our studio, is the law consultant Paula Virilio, who has lead both Interpol and the SPK in the past. To you the question... where is the 180° turn of the US president taking the criminal justice system?
VIRILIO: I don’t know if this step was really thought through. Only a short while ago, he signed a paper assigning more money to the according task forces. This step now... it is putting the whole task force into a tight spot. There are definitely going to be conflicts with Interpol. The step back from American engagement will likely have consequences.
TAKADA: Do you mean financially?`
VIRILIO: Interpol still views Kira as the world’s most wanted terrorist. And those who work with Interpol usually do this in the shape of a substantial financial contribution. So yes, I think this step will freeze both the US engagement with Interpol and this form of international cooperation at large, for an indefinite amount of time. With a whole row of unpredictable consequences, by the way. Cooperations across borders, agreements to hand people over, tax agreements... At baseline, he just turned the US into a paradise for organized crime.
MIKAMI: Come on, Paula, that’s ridiculous!
_________________________
The scene cuts, to the SPK who was watching. They’re understandably displeased. And they argue that Kira must be blackmailing the president to do this. The SPK things they had something on Kira that made Kira fear them.
This makes them think back to the kidnapping stunt in Japan.
Mello then calls the SPK.
MELLO: My condolences for the end of your job contract. Looks like sticking to the rules was a waste of time.
He then tells Near that he used to have the notebook for a little bit. Near is shocked the task force didn’t tell him any of that. Mello tells Near that he’ll have to work hard to catch up with him now.
Thus he gives Near a tip, telling him a rule is fake.
___________________________
We’re back on Kira’s Kingdom. They talk about Sugai, who’s suicide included a confession (thanks Light), about the family feud at Soichiro’s funeral, and then about protestants circling the SPK building.
___________________________
Near calls Light. He confronts Light on not informing him on the raid. He’s pissed and says they failed because they didn’t use his resources for backup.
He also asks Light what he thinks of fake rules and immediately admits Mello told him this.......................
Near elaborates on the idea that the fake rules were made to create an alibi. Light ‘deduces’ the correct fake rules.
Near suggests testing the book and its rules, the task force refuses this. Near then addresses the task force members and calls suspicion to Light being Kira.
After the call ends, the anti-SPK protesters arrive at the building and try to storm it. Near and the SPK make a run for it.
_____________________________
Light says that Near is just desperate to present just about anything before his special task force gets dissolved. The task force discuss Near’s theory anyway.
Matsuda says that Near is just trying to split them apart. The other task force members aren’t as anti-Near.

The Violet Paladin (Keith x Reader) Ch 1
Summary: (Y/n) was just a normal girl with a normal life. She’s always been a dreamer looking to the stars and the future. When one fateful night changes her whole life what secrets lie beyond in the unknown?
[masterlist]
Word Count: 2447
It was just a normal day of classes at the garrison. I was standing in the back watching my best friend Katie and her teammates fly, unsuccessfully I might add... the simulator, which had resulted in a failure. I watched as Commander Iverson slammed open the pod door and yelled at the trio to get out. He used them as an example of a bad team.
Comparing them to my own team I think they're better than us. I'm on the team of Ina and Jacob, I hardly knew either of them before getting teamed up and even still I don't know much other than the basics like their flying and comm skills. I'm the team's engineer, I hope after I graduate I'll be able to help build new ships with my idea's.
I had been so zoned out in my thought's that I hadn't realized it was finally my teams turn in the simulator. Unlike with Katie's team, we hadn't crashed or anything so the rest of the class was as uneventful as usual. Thinking about it, it wasn't always like this. It used to be kind of fun, though I never really got to see it being in the engineer's class I had always heard of these two boys, I only learned the name of one, which was Keith because we were in a class together but he got kicked out not long ago.
He used to be one of the perfect models for when I was drawing, having this look about him that made it seem like he was never really here. I probably have more drawings of him than I'm willing to admit but I could help it. I grabbed my backpack with my drawing pad, pencils, and some snacks to go meet Katie on the roof. It had become a nightly routine for us, ever since she sneaked in after her father and brother went missing. I would spend the time sitting next to her either sketching the sky or when I listened to her machine I'd try to sketch what I imagined the voices to look like.
Tonight wasn't going to be any different, I walked onto the roof seeing I was alone I plopped down dangling my feet over the edge and grabbed my sketch pad and a pencil. I began drawing as I heard footsteps behind me and a heavy backpack sat next to me.
I looked over to see Katie. She quickly set up her machine and plugged in the headphone to listen.
"I hope we find out what Voltron is." She said with her eyes closed. "Me too, If it's as dangerous as I think it is, I hope those people we hear never find it," I told her. I went back to sketching the stars again but was soon after interrupted.
"You know it's not polite to ignore your girlfriend." I heard the familiar voice speak from behind. I turned to see none other than Lance and Hunk. "Oh, Lance, Hunk..." It seemed like it took her a moment to register what he had said, "For the last time we're not dating!"
"We're just looking at the stars," I told the Cuban teen. He'd looked pasted Pidge and me to see her tech.
"Man where'd you get that stuff it doesn't look like garrison tech at all," Lance remarked.
"I built it," Pidge smirked.
"You built all this?" Hunk slowly approached her gear to touch it but was slapped away.
"With this puppy, I can scan all the way to the edge of our solar system," She proudly started.
"All the way to Kerberos?" Lance retorted, Pidge immediately shrunk at the mention of that. "You go ballistic anytime a teacher mentions it!" I turned to Lance, "There are just things you don't understand," I took the liberty to slap Hunk's hand away for the second time.
"Well Pidge, if we're gonna bond as a real team we can't have any secrets and it seems like you're most comfortable with (Y/n) so we can bring her along too," Lance gave me one of his looks like he was trying to flirt with me, I had only known the looks cause I've seen him use them on other girls in the garrison. "Fine..." Pidge sighed. "The world as you know it is about to change," She had a sad look in her eye.
"The Kerberos mission wasn't lost because of pilot error or otherwise-"
"STOP TOUCHING MY EQUIPMENT!" Pidge shouted angrily at Hunk. You took note of this to keep an extra close eye on your sketch pad. "Anyways," She said after calming down, "I've been scanning the system and picking up alien radio chatter," She turned to look at Lance.
"Woah! Wait, Alien?!" Hunk panicked.
"Okay, so you're both insane," Lance crossed his arms and glared at us. "We're serious," I matched his glare.
"They've just been repeating one thing, and that's Voltron, and from what I've heard tonight it's been going crazier than ever," Pidge informed them.
"How crazy?" Lance questioned. We were interrupted by Iverson over the P.A. system
"What's going on?" Hunk looked around. "Is that a meteorite?" He pointed out something in the sky.
"Can't be," I mumbled.
"It's a ship!" Pidge announced.
"Holy cow! I can't believe what I am seeing! It's not one of ours,"
"That's because it's one of theirs," I almost wanted to smirk.
"So wait there really are aliens out there?" Hunk began to freak out yet again. Pidge and I immediately packed up and started to leave.
"I've gotta see that ship!" She cheered.
"Hunk come on!" Lance called following us.
The four of you sat on rocks near the base they set up but far enough away that we wouldn't be caught. I watched as Pidge hacked their systems to get a look inside. We watched Shiro on the feed surrounded by men in hazard suits. We had all perked up at the mention of Voltron from Shiro.
"We need to get down there and save him," I said.
"Hate to be the bearer of bad news but weren't we watching on this because there's no way to get down there past those guards?" Hunk pleaded.
"That was before we were properly motivated. Now we just gotta think. Could we tunnel in?" Lance was talking to himself. We all bounced ideas of how to get in (Or to go back to the dorms in Hunk's case), before agreeing on needing a distraction. That's when you heard explosions in the distance.
"Like that!" Lance shouted. Hunk began to freak out thinking it was aliens.
"No, that was a distraction," You commented.
"Yeah, for him," Pidge pointed out someone approaching from opposite of where the garrison had left.
"Oh no way, that guy is always trying to one-up me!" Lance shouted looking through the binoculars.
"Who?" Hunk asked as Lance jumped down.
"Keith!" Lance shouted as Hunk followed him down.
"Who's Keith?" Pidge asked, then turned to me since I was the only one with her still.
"He got kicked out," I told her as we followed the boys. When we made it down everyone but Lance (who ran in) stayed by the entrance and watched the exchange between him and Keith.
Pidge, Hunk and I all kept watching for a minute while Lance and Keith carried Shiro back to Keith's hoverbike.
"Is this thing going to be big enough for all of us?" Pidge asked.
"No," Keith replied. Lance handed Shiro over to Pidge and I as he sat on the wing. Keith quickly took off with the Garrison not far behind us. I helped Pidge keep Shiro on the bike as Keith was telling Hunk what to do to get the officers off our trail. So far it was successful except for one very persistent pursuer.
"Guys it that a cliff up ahead?" Hunk asked.
"Yup." Keith almost playfully said as he speeds up with us all screaming no.
"You're gonna get us all killed!" Lance shouted.
"Just trust me!" Keith said. How we survived that I may never know but we did.
Keith drove to a small shack in the middle of nowhere and parked, by this time it was almost morning and Shiro had woken up.
Everyone except Keith and Shiro was inside just kind of talking. "You realize how much trouble we will be in when we go back right?" I asked. We all remained silent for a moment that's when Keith and Shiro walked in.
Keith walked over to a board covered by a white sheet and ripped it off to reveal a bunch of pictures and diagrams.
"What is this?" Shiro asked.
"I don't really know, I've been working on it basically since I was booted from the Garrison, like some energy out here was telling me to search,"
"For what exactly?" I slightly zoned out from the conversation as I looked at the picture of the lion carvings. I only started paying attention again when I saw Shiro had turned to us.
"I guess I should thank you all, Lance right?" He shook Lance's hand. Then turned to Pidge, Hunk and I.
"(Y/n)," I shook his hand as well.
"The nervous guy is Hunk I'm Pidge," She introduced herself. "So did anyone else from your crew make it out?"
"I'm not sure. The last things I remember are the mission and when we got captured, other than that it's just bits and pieces,"
"Yeah sorry to interrupt but back to the aliens. Where exactly are they now?" Hunk began to panic yet again.
"I can't really put it together, I just remember "Voltron", Its some weapon they're searching for, but I think we need to find it before they do,"
"Well, last night I was rummaging through Pidge's stuff," As soon as I heard that come from Hunk's mouth I clutched mine tighter. "I found this picture, look it's his girlfriend," He chuckled a bit.
"Hey, give me that! Why were you in my stuff?" She asked him.
"I was looking for snacks."
"Did you go through mine?" I asked.
"No," He replied "Anyway's I found these series of number that looks like a Fraunhofer Line,"
"A what?" Keith asked.
"It's a number that describes the emission spectrum of an element, that is not found on earth, So it might be this Voltron and I can probably build a machine to look for it," Hunk quickly explained. "The wavelength looks like this," He pulled out a paper which Keith took and held to his board and it matched up with a series of rock formations.
After Hunk built his machine the six of us traveled out there and followed Hunk and Pidge to a cave with more drawings of the lions. I looked at each one, they were all fascinating. When they started to glow, I backed up a bit when the floor crumbled. We all screamed as we were on almost like a water slide and landed in a little pool of water at the bottom.
"Ow," I mumbled and looked up to see a lion.
"Is this it?" Pidge asked.
"It must be," Shiro said.
"This has got to be what's been causing all this crazy energy out here," Keith walked towards it.
"There's a force field around it." I said, "And probably for a good reason." I mumbled the last part, everyone had already started walking towards it I sighed and followed. Keith put his hands on the force field.
"I wonder how we get through?" He asked no one.
"Maybe we just have to knock?" Lance knocked and the Lion roared to life it seemed like we all had the same vision of six lions forming one giant mecha.
"Whoa," We all said.
"This is only one part of Voltron," Shiro said.
"I wonder where the rest are?" Pidge questioned. The lion lowered down and opened its mouth.
"Hey we probably shouldn't," I started but Lance already ran inside. "Touch anything..." as everyone else walked up.
"Come on (y/n)," Pidge said, I walked up behind her and into the head. The controls all powered on and were in a language we couldn't understand. I stood in the back between Keith and Shiro.
"Okay, guys, I feel like I need to point out just so we're all aware, we're in some kind of futuristic alien cat head right now," Hunk said.
"Whoa did you guys just hear that?"
"What?" Keith asked.
"I think it's talking to me," Lance turned to look at the controls.
"Wait Lance don't touch anything," I said but too late he already started to push buttons.
"Don't worry I've got this," He said and blasted out of the cave and started flying crazily. I grabbed the nearest thing, which happened to be Keith who was also holding onto something for dear life.
"You are the worst pilot ever!" Keith yelled.
"This is awesome!" Lance cheered.
"Make it stop!" Hunk pleaded.
"I'm not making it do anything,"
"Where are you going?" Keith asked as we took off towards space.
"I just said I'm not doing anything, it says there is an alien ship approaching Earth I think we're supposed to stop it," Lance said.
"What did it say exactly?" Pidge asked.
"It's not saying words just idea's... Kinda,"
"If that's them and this is what they're coming for maybe we should just give it to them," Hunk said.
"You don't understand, these monsters spread like a plague through the galaxy, giving them this won't stop them," We all glared at Hunk who shrunk back. As we turned back, we were face to face with a large Alien cruiser which began firing at us.
Lance avoided the blasts. "Okay, I think I know what to do,"
"Be careful man this isn't the simulator!" Pidge warned.
"Oh, good, cause I always crash those," Lance said. That didn't make any of us feel any better but Lance shot a beam from the lion and attacked it before flying us away from the planet and towards deep space. We passed Kerberos and we were all in shock, and a wormhole had opened in the distance. "Where does it go?" Pidge asked.
"I don't know, Shiro, you're the senior officer, what should we do?" We all turned to Shiro.
"I don't know what's happening but the lion seems to know more than we do, so, for now, we should trust it. However we're a team now, so we decide together," We were all silent but it seemed like we agreed to go through the wormhole was the best option.

Exactly one year ago, I posted my first Ninjago fanfiction on Tumblr
(Yes, this is one of these big and personal posts, but bear with me for a second ^w^)
I've already talked about how much Ninjago means to me, and what a positive impact it has had on my life, but to celebrate a year into this fandom, I'd like to focus on its community here on Tumblr.
Tumblr media
I've always been into Ninjago. In fact, I started watching it back in 2011, when it first came out!
Later on, I discovered fanfiction. It was like a dream come true, to read original stories about my favorite ninja, and to write them myself too! Eventually I began posting them, and I must say... They weren't good XD
But hey, I loved writing them! So I did just that - I kept writing and writing, until... Well, I grew out of Ninjago when I reached 7th grade.
But last year, I decided to rewatch the entire series during Christmas break. It was like falling in love with my favorite ninja all over again.
And who would have thought there would be an active fanbase here on Tumblr?
I remember scrolling down the tag and smiling at every single artwork and piece of fanfic (+ memes, of course. Who can forget about memes?) that I found.
(And bruh, discovering bruiseshipping? Holy FSM, that was truly a Christmas miracle.)
On December 28th of 2017, I made my first Ninjago Vocal Cover.

The feedback I got was incredible. I had never, ever received such positive comments before, and the encouragement to do more helped me get out of the bad mental state I was in.
So I got writing again.
If I was going to post Ninjago, I was going to post Pixane.
So I did do that, and on January 1st of 2018, I posted my first Ninjago fanfiction in years.
Did I post it as soon as I finished it? Yes!
Had I beta-ed it? ... No...?
It was still a huge step for me though! Once that story was up, I was on freaking fire.
To make you understand, I published a total of 30 Ninjago related stories (and that was just the stuff I made public!)
I have never produced this much content before!
If that wasn't enough, I picked up my YouTube channel again, occasionally made some art, and heck, somehow I got motivated to clean up my room to make space for LEGOs.
I even had the pleasure of hosting a collaborative project with around 30 people! (Yes, the new one is on the way, we're all still working on it :D)

youtube
Suddenly I was motivated to do stuff, I wasn't sad all the time, I made new friends!
All that is because of YOU.
I'm just a random girl from Greece that happens to like a bunch of LEGO ninja. Yet, you've treated me with so much kindness, and made me feel like so much more than that.
I'm not oblivious to the fact that I am known inside this fanbase. I just want to make sure you know that you made my voice loud.
And for that, I am greatful.
I am greatful for the joy you've given me, and the memories I was able to make because of you.
I've always wanted this blog to be a place of positivity. It makes me so incredibly happy that you can seek to it to get away from everything else, that it makes you happy.
This blog, is our blog.
So I'd like to take a moment to personally thank a few people from this community that played an important role in my life in 2018. If you don't want to go through a big thank you list, that is totally understandable, so I'll put it under the cut. To those of you who are leaving this post now,
Happy New Year!
Before I start, I'd like to say that it would be impossible to include every single person I know into one post. If you're not in here but you're still relatively active, chances are I don't know you personally (but I have probably noticed you!) OR I accidentally forgot to include you, in which case I'M SO SORRY, AAAA!
Without any further ado!
Thank you @diamantdrache, for drawing me like three times without me even asking, holy crap ;w; You're so amazing dude, I'm always happy to see you around. Keep being awesome!
Thank you to @strawberryhipster and @kunoichi-of-fangirling for always screaming with me about Pixane!
Thank you @i-am-the-bluejay for making me laugh through your amazing bruise fanfics! They never failed to cheer me up :D
A special thanks to @parachutingkitten, for, gosh, everything. Discovered your fanfics during a very hard time, and trying to solve the mystery behind them kept me going. You're so kind and sweet to me all the time, and I'm so happy we ran into each other!
Huge thanks to @volzorra for dropping by my inbox to tell me the randomest of things! I adore everything you do, keep it up!! :D
Thanks to @panwitha-plan, @purplerose244, @monstriframinerva and @ninjago-rewritten for making me giggle whenever you pop up in my feed and notifications! You guys rock 💜
A big one to @ninjakitten1699 for coming up with such amazing scenarios featuring the one true mastermind of Ninjago - Dr. Kitty Saunders! Not only that, but somehow you always remember what stuff I like, and tag me in funny posts (and angst bc I live for that) and making my day! Thank you so much for everything!
Thank you @coco-jaguar for being a mom to all of us in the fandom, and organising such cool events like the Secret Santa!
Thanks to @loud-quiet-and-fragile for going through 100 of my posts at once and commenting at every single one! You're just so fun to be around, and my mood instantly improves when I see you!
You knew it was coming, @nightlybirdie! Thank you, for always responding to my yelling about your art, and for yelling on my content as well! You're one of the sweetest people I know, I'm seriously so happy we met!
Thank you to @kara-is-so-ninja!! For not only having such an amazing AU, but for spreading joy everywhere you go! I admire your work so freaking much, but I admire you as a person even more. Thank you for always putting a smile on my face 💜
Thank you @ninjagojed, for being so easy and fun to talk to! I enjoy your company to death!
HUGE THANKS TO MY WONDERFUL DAUGHTER @lindsey-chr-not-found!! I've known you for so long and, its amazing we found each other again! Thanks for screaming to me about our ideas, and, well, for letting me adopt you XD
A big thanks to @echojulien for being such a supportive friend, and always there when I'm in need of our boy Echo!! :D
This is where it starts to get really difficult to fit things into a single paragraph...
To @hottchoco, who is basically one of the reasons I started shipping bruise in the first place, thank you for opening my eyes. Thank you for being that one person that is somehow into all of my fandoms at once, and screaming to me in random about them. Thank you for, even though we have different tastes sometimes, being respectful no matter what. Thank you, for being my shoulder to cry on when I need it. Thanks for everything dude :D 💜
Thank you @spinharmony, for creating a server where I made such amazing friends, and for BEING one of those amazing friends. It's so easy to talk to you about anything. You're always there, whether it's screaming about our misunderstood favorite characters, or talking about our problems. Thank you so much for just being there. I am so lucky to be able to call you my friend 💜
Thank you @hollsheadcanons!! You were one of the first people I met in this fandom, and definitely someone I was comfortable with since day one. We spend so much time just meming and yelling, that I literally feel like there's nothing to be afraid of when I'm with you. You make all my problems disappear, but you're also here to comfort me when I'm in need of hugs. Words are not enough to describe how much you mean to me. You're one of my best friends in the entire world, and for that, I thank you. Love you so much Holls!!💜
And finally, @clumsinessinperson and @ninjagoruinedmylife. You two, it feels wrong to talk about you separatedly because we're always together! I don't even know where to begin with you guys, I just love you so freaking much. No matter how upset I am, you always lift me up. You're so understanding of how I feel, and I know I can always count on you for anything. I just can't believe how close we are, and how many things we've created and been through together. I want you to know that you mean the world to me, and I love you so much. Thank you for being my friends. I love you 💜
To everyone reading this, regardless of being in my list or not, thank you so much for being part of my year, and for being part of my life. Thank you for everything 💜

ART SCHOOL | Q&A with Scott Chenoweth
A man of many sketchbooks, Long Beach based artist Scott Chenoweth’s black and white illustrations focus on subtle humor, puns, and all things that capture his many imaginations. Not only one thing, Scott creates art in different styles for different things– using what he has learned from being the art director at Surfing Magazine and his experiences as a director at What Youth art program. We’re stoked to find out more about Scott’s artistic process, find out his art school tip, and about some of his many projects in 2018 – including his first solo show in over 12 years!
Photographs by Taylor Dunfee
Introduce yourself?  I’m Scott Chenoweth, a freelance illustrator and designer from Ventura, Ca currently living in Long Beach. Lets see, the basic run down is I’ve spent the last 12 years making magazines, was the art director of Surfing Magazine for 5 years then started What Youth and just wrapped up my time there. I also opened a brewery called Madewest Brewing Co. in Ventura with some high school friends that’s been so much fun to work on and a great way to get art out that I never thought possible.
Describe your works for us. I have a few different styles, I like to use each medium for different things. For example, my illustration style is predominantly black and white silly line drawings of puns and other things I think are funny. I like to use that medium for myself, just to enjoy making things that people can smirk at.
Whereas my design style is a lot more buttoned up. It’s the one that I take a little more seriously. Clean, minimalist, no marks made unless they’re essential. That kind of thing. I do a lot of brand identities and have spent a lot of time in print. The design work is definitely more visible than my illustration stuff, but hopefully that will start to shift this year.
What were some of your early influences? Art heroes?  I got into art super early so I have a lot of different influences. Love the abstract expressionists Rauschenberg, Rothko, any of those artists that were really messing with the platform of what it meant to make art. Francis Bacon, Goya, Klimt and when I was a kid I was pretty obsessed with Nagel, H.R. Giger, Escher and so on. I loved anyone who was skilled with a pen. When I was a kid I thought the more realistic the drawing looked, the better artist you were. I think that’s why I gravitated to the abstract expressionists when I figured out that wasn’t the case.
Tell us what type of things are you inspired by in your recent works?  I get super inspired by working with the kids (ha, 18-24 year olds). I have been lucky enough to surround myself with some incredibly talented people at What Youth that are always questioning the way I learned to do things. Filmakers, artists, photographers - just kids who have never been told not to do something a certain way. I grew up and went to art school where I was yelled at and told how things must be done. The younger generations are skipping the school shit and just making stuff. There’s so many platforms for it now that didn’t exist when I was that age. It’s so sick to see unfiltered expression that’s the result of all this new media.
Do you keep a sketchbook or work your ideas as you go along?  I do, I have 5 in the works right now. One for notes the rest for sketches and ideas. I have small ones that fit in the pocket for when I’m out and about. Larger ones that get a little dusty from time to time. I stopped using them as much recently, cause if I ever wanted to do something with the art in them, it’s kinda pointless. I’m not going to have someone ask to buy a drawing and sell them my whole sketch book… and I definitely don’t want to rip it out. The books kinda become sacred personal items, and I am trying to get away from that. Art is meant to be shared, not hoarded on a shelf.
What’s something you can pass along art tip wise? What have you learned in your years of art making? I think a lot of people don’t understand the commitment you have to make to do anything with art. If you’re not completely self motivated, it’s probably not for you. Everyone I know that’s actually making rad shit right now is completely obsessed. And it’s so cool to see that drive and what they do with it. There’s no dabbling in it.
How do you stay fresh or spend your time when you’re not drawing? How do you overcome drawer’s block? The usual suspects I guess. Hitting the road traveling, spinning records, drinking beers on the patio and I’ve gotten super into cooking lately too. As far as drawers block, I just try and not force it. I have so many outlets drawing is kind of the fun thing to get back to. I have a silk screen press in my house, paint murals, design logos, build furniture, etc. There’s so much to do that drawers block kinda doesn’t exist. If you’re not feeling it, switch mediums or just take a break and walk around the block.
What do you think you’d be doing if you weren’t an artist? Probably be a paramedic. My pop is a doctor and my mom’s a nurse. I grew up around the medical stuff my whole life and was always super into it and loved being around that kinda thing.
What are your favorite Vans? Any of the classics. I’ve had em all on heavy rotation since I was 7 years old with my first pair of checkered slip ons and still rock the same hand full of styles. I guess that’s just part of growing up in southern CA. The classics never die.
What advice would you give someone thinking about art as a career? Now is the best time to do it. There’s more opportunity out there than I’ve ever seen. So many new things coming out, so may platforms to share your work on, so may ways you can get your work seen. If you’re getting into it now, be lucky, but also realize you’re not alone and you’re going up against everyone else trying for the same jobs. And if the job you want isn’t out there, make it up. That’s what we did at What Youth and we had great time running around the world making shit
What’s up for the rest of your year? Anything you’d like to mention?  This year has been and continues to be super hectic and exciting. I left full time work for the first time in my life to attack freelance design. There’s a ton of exciting projects coming in outside of the surf/skate world that really excite me, especially in the cannabis industry. I also have a few big painting and mural projects coming up this fall. Got the new silk screen set up and am cranking out new shirts under the label “Don’t Feed The Ghosts”. I have a bunch of new Madewest Beer cans coming out this summer, we’re launching like two new cans per month. And just overall saying yes to anything I can get my hands on. Oh, and I just signed up to do my first solo show in over 12 years at the beginning of next year, so its going to be a busy year to say the least. Thanks for reaching out!

Meet Ryan North, Writer on Bravest Warriors
Tumblr media
And lots of other stuff too: you probably know Ryan from his writing on the Adventure Time and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic book series. He’s also the mind behind the iconic Dinosaur Comics, in which clip art T-Rex, Utahraptor and Dromiceiomimus philosophize on the tri-weekly. He may be the biggest comics star out there who doesn’t draw!? Regardless, I’d like to see a challenger face off against him; he is, apparently, very tall. I caught up with Ryan just as he was in the midst of ECCC 2018:
When did you know you wanted to be a writer, or did it just kind of happen?
There was no "sit straight up in bed at midnight, suddenly wide awake, and whisper 'I want to be a writer'" moment, if that's what you're wondering!  But it's always been something I enjoyed. I went to school for computer science (and have a masters in computational linguistics) but when I graduated I had the choice to a) get a real job, or b) be a writer, and all I had to do to become a writer was fail to get a real job. And it turns out it's really easy to not get a job!
Having studied computer science, you created tech for webcomic authors - how did those projects come about? What other ways have your programming skillz intersected with your creative career?
That's true! The thought process was basically, "There is a service that does not exist, so I guess I'll have to write it.” There were a couple: RSSPECT for rss feed generation (remember RSS? I MISS IT), and Project Wonderful for advertising that doesn't suck. That continues on to this very day!  And of course when it came to writing Squirrel Girl for Marvel, I made her a computer science student too, so there's the intersection.
Tumblr media
So if you don’t draw, what motivated you to get into comics - were you just that big a fan?
I was more of a fan in abstract, really - I couldn't get comics growing up, and this was before the internet. But then when I got a job as an undergrad, I took my first paycheque and walked into a comic shoppe and just started buying things at random, and loved them all, so it was nice that my theoretical interest in comics was actually real. I started Dinosaur Comics - my fixed art webcomic - in my last year of undergrad.
Did you discover the dinosaur artwork for Dinosaur Comics - or did they find you?
Some would argue, quite convincingly, that they are a universal constant, and can never be either created or destroyed.
Tumblr media
What do you consider your finest accomplishment?
I would like to go to two places: Antarctica and space. I sell plush T-Rexes from Dinosaur Comics at topatoco.com/qwantz, and some AMAZING READERS brought him to both the South Pole, and the edge of space. It is a weird feeling to be jealous of a fictional character you created, but it's a good one. And I'm gonna take all the credit for T-Rex's accomplishments here, even though I had nothing to do with them.
What can you tell us about your writing process? What would you recommend to young writers trying to get disciplined/motivated?
Figure out where and how you work. You have to be honest with yourself. For example, I know that I work best in the morning, and I rarely do good work after 5pm. So I get up at 7am and I write until it's 5pm, and then I stop. I also know that I work best alone, so I don't go to coffee shops or hang out with friends to write. If I'm working, I'm alone. Knowing this lets me set up the circumstances that help me get work done. It's more fun to hang out with friends, but at least this way when I do it I know it's hanging out, so I don't try to work during it, and I can enjoy it for what it is instead of feeling guilty about not working.
Does it work pretty smoothly, writing comics like Squirrel Girl and Adventure Time and having them illustrated by other (super talented) folks?
I've been really lucky, I think, in always collaborating with amazing people.  Braden Lamb and Shelli Paroline were my partners on Adventure Time, and we just clicked as a team and we're still great friends, years after the book ended.  We even made our own comic together: The Midas Flesh, published by Boom! BOX - it's about King Midas in space. And with Squirrel Girl it's the same - Erica (Henderson) and I get along great and my favourite thing is getting back art from her - or any artist - because you get to see your words and scenes transformed into pictures that are even better than you imagined.

What are your thoughts about writing branching narratives / "make your own story" books - are they the Future? What are the biggest challenges, and what have you been most proud of in that area?
I mean, I like them! I like how they capture a lot of the semantics of gaming in a different medium. The challenge is keeping track of state: in a game you can pick up a sword or not pick up a sword, and that's easy: just set a variable. In a book you need to have a choice to pick up that sword, and then every option after that choice has to be duplicated, or else you lose track of whether they picked up the sword or not. There are ways to get around this but most of them involve cheating in some way (ie: just asking the reader if they have the sword, to which they will always say, "Oh yes absolutely, I just love swords especially now that I know they're useful.” So it's always something to keep in mind.
I guess the most impressive thing we had happen was the Kickstarter for To Be or Not To Be: my chooseable-path version of Hamlet.  We raised over $580,000 (for a book!), which was the most-funded publishing project on Kickstarter at the time. That was a crazy book.
Tumblr media
How did you come to write for Bravest Warriors?
I was already a fan of the show (having come in after the first season) so it was a matter of saying yes when I was asked if I was interested!  I WAS.
What are your favorite things about Beth, Danny, Wallow and Chris?
For me it's the teamwork: these are people who mess up - and save - the universe on the regular. Also, I love competent characters, and Beth is clearly the most competent character of the bunch. BETH4EVER.
What's your favorite thing about Bravest Warriors in general?
The series is set both in the future AND in space, which are my favourite time periods / general locales to be in. It opens things up to basically any kind of story you can imagine, which is terrific. No idea is too out-there for the Bravest Warriors, which is super fun for a writer, and hopefully super-fun to watch too!  In my first episode (RoboChris) I got to invent an evil robot Chris, and everyone said "Okay, awesome, let's absolutely go with that”.
Tumblr media
If you had to describe your writing style in a few words, how would you?
Enthusiastic! And also maybe a little teeny eensie bit wordy.
What are your favorite cartoons, and the biggest inspirations of your work?
I grew up on The Real Ghostbusters, and I loved that that show wasn't afraid to tackle big ideas in what was supposed to be just a tie-in show for a goofy movie (SORRY BUT GHOSTBUSTERS IS GOOFY). It's a lesson I try to take with me: you don't need to talk down to kids, teens, anyone: they're smart, and they'll pick up what you're laying down. Plus that show had Slimer, which I will argue RIGHT NOW is the original Catbug. The longer I get into answering this question the more parallels I see!
Would you ever want to make your own cartoon?
OBVIOUSLY, THAT WOULD BE AMAZING.
Tumblr media
(Slimer. Anyone want to draw him and Catbug as best pals?!)
Which 5 books / comics / movies / seasons of TV would you have on a desert island - a desert island with a functional entertainment center?
1. Babylon 5 (all 5 seasons, though we all know you only really need seasons 1-4 and then the “Sleeping in Light” finale in Season 5)
2. A complete print-out of Wikipedia, bound as a book in order to satisfy the requirements of this question.
3. Star Trek TNG (all 7 seasons, thank you)
4. A complete run of Action Comics (because that's gotta keep me busy for a while)
and let's say for the last one...
5... the Bravest Warriors comics by my good friend Joey Comeau (THEY ARE AWESOME AND SO IS HE).
Are you living the dream? Cause it kinda seems like you're living the dream?
I'm 2m tall and I've got my own dog and I've only gotten trapped in a hole once!  THAT IS THE VERY DEFINITION OF LIVING THE DREAM.
Thanks for the interview Ryan! Best of luck in all current and future projects. We look forward to seeing more of the work you do and the holes you get yourself out of.

Good Things that happened this year.
This year pretty much changed who I am as a person, and of course, it came with it’s good and bad. Having learnt from the bad, I think we should all just focus on the good that happened this year.
One of the best things that happened to me this year, was, surprisingly, people. This post is to remind you all of the impact you’ve had on me. Each of you, from your own little corner of the world has helped make my days and nights better. So these 2 words come from the depth of my heart, with all the emphasis I can place and all the gratitude I can muster: Thank you. I hope each one of you finds strength similar to, if not greater than what you’ve given me.
The Good Things of 2017:
B.A.P
@roses-for-jongup honestly no amount of words can fully convey what you mean to me, and this is a fantastically sub par attempt. I’m the most comfortable with you, and that should say a lot. we’re armed with absolutely ridiculous knowledge about each other, and your smallest words, deeds, and eDITS have made me so happy. as I always say, you’re my ‘all of the above’, my mvp, and the only annoying person I’d take a couple of bullets for. a honeybun.
@anna-something to the world you may be a stoic powerful gal with a thunderous ability to tear us all a new one, but to me, you’re also a soft socialist grandma who sends me lovely drunk texts. You’ve changed the way I look at so many aspects of the world. I could literally talk to you about anything and have the time of my life. Your words probably matter to me the most. Thank you for improving me. I owe so much to you.
@daehyuns-beautiful-golden-skin michael, nothing makes me happier than you angrily key smashing at everything I say. You’ve made me feel better about myself, raised my self confidence, and always, always supported me. You’ve given me a shoulder to lean on and an ear to constantly rant to. Just remember, be it your memes, your dancing or your life in general, suds shall always be in the audience cheering you on.
@doitforbangyongguk I’m always stunned by how soon I got so comfortable with you, It’s just your aura. You’re hilarious, kind, and you’ve helped me through so much. DOOT DOOT.
@zeloswaffles Ah my sweet pancake mother who constantly complains about my unnecessary rudeness. Thank you for checking up on me, for taking an interest in me, for the advice, for everything.
@daehnii MY LOVELIEST WIFE, I swear we have the best conversations, and I’ve never met anyone with such similar opinions to mine. You’re the softest bean and every single message from you cheers me up. Gosh I love talking to you sosososososoooo much i just love you lei bye.
@foxjae you’re pretty much the reason I got motivated to write more. You always listen, you always contribute and I always learn something when I talk to you. And it makes me very happy knowing that you’re proud of me. You’ve called me out on my mistakes and I genuinely do appreciate it. The realest, coolest, queer mom.
@dreamermoonchan you’ve been there since the absolute beginning and I treasure you so much? You’re up for any kind of conversation, and we bond over so many shared interests. Thank you for making me feel welcome in the fandom.
@onlystraightforjongup a severely underrated conversationalist, you send me big paragraphs, I send you big paragraphs, and it’s bloody brilliant. If I have to endlessly hypothesise about B.A.P in all sorts of universes, I’m glad it’s with you. one of my absolute favourite people.
@jongup-is-an-enigma the most approachable and open person I know. You’re so fun, and you’ve made me feel like I’m fun too, ya know? This gal knows how to cheer someone up. I hope you know that I’m always here for you, and so is my butt.
@zainbap my lovely unicorn dad, one of the defining aspects of my experience here is you sighing at every second thing I do. Your random bouts of affection, subsequently followed by utter exasperation are what I thrive for. You’re a beacon of light to not just me, but the fandom. i hope youre proud of how soft I’m being.
@jion-a my first mother, president of the mom squad and also one of the first people who gave me a sense of belonging in the fandom. You’ve been so kind to me. I almost feel like I don’t deserve you. Thank you for being a constant pillar of support for this smol child.
@7btobap6 ahhh my fight aunt, trust me I’ve never enjoyed fighting with anyone as much as I do with you. Beyond our external layer of hatred for each other, I hope you know that nobody probably has understood my problems better than you. I love you lots.
@fae-hyun I miss you like a hellofa lot okay. I genuinely don’t know what I’d have done without you. My everpresent daestan, we have shed tears of pain thanks to our goofball of a bias, but it’s all worth it because you’re you. God knows I’m still the koala to your tree.
@bapofficial you’ve borne my constant annoying callouts, the never ending puns, and all the general screaming and frankly, this is a big achievement. You’re so positive and motivating and your mere presence makes me feel a little brighter.
@bap-time ah my local mean dispenser, i will always be your fight child. Thank you for having my back, encouraging my content, and smothering me with all that soft. I love you even though you have poor taste in fashion.
@thediebutterfly my timezone sharing niece, you’re a blessing to the fandom. I love that we’re on the same wavelength about a lot of things *cough*bangdae*cough* and I love freaking out with you. Thank you for tagging me in cute/rude/all kinds of posts, it makes me wonderfully happy.
@aegyo-chan you have such a calming air about you, It’s so pleasant, and feels like home. I love that I finally have someone to cry to about the exploits of Kim Himchan while simultaneously torturing you with Daehyun. I love how we bond over our similar cultures. And I’m so thankful for how lovely you’ve been to me.
@moondance-mp3 MY ONION I DON’T EVEN REMEMBER HOW WE STARTED TALKING but I’m so glad we did. You never fail to make me laugh. We’re the queens of discourse now and no one can take that away from us. I love you as much as you love dae’s nose.
@bangedhim it’s all thanks to my lucky fate that I found you (see what i did there). weve been talking for longer than I can remember, wow. And you’re so goddamn entertaining. My cheeks hurt because of everything you send to me, the smiles just won’t stop. ily.
@daehdream remember that time I tried to adopt you and failed. Gosh golly everyone’s come a long way. I hope you know how much I and the fandom love and treasure you. an A+ fellow daestan and one of the strongest people I know.
@happy-daes my sweet billie bean, you’re very loved, and very strong and I’m always proud of you. All of your tags and all the sweet things you’ve said about me have made me feel loved too. Thank you.
@mooncakesjongup MY FIGHT ADI AUNTY, it was honestly the best thing for me to find out about how close we lived. Let the bollywood memes and b.a.p connections, and calling out each other’s kinks never stop.
@daesperado G IS THE MOST ADORABLE PERSON ON EARTH AND THAT’S THE COLD HARD TRUTH. You randomly popped into my dms and I’m hella happy you did because I got to know the wildest and cutest daestan ever. Bless your entire cute soul. Love blonde dae.
@brainboxercheetos pufffyyyyyy I always say this, but thank you so much for your unadulterated kindness. You’re true sunshine and you always send such supportive things to me, it’s heart warming. Keep being the lovely flower that you are.
@seren4moonjongup tezzy always leaves me tazed. From practically killing me with all those jongup stories to saving my life with brilliant words of advice. You’ve done it all, and I’m grateful.
@merlionmen we freakishly have a lot of common things between us, and it’s amazing. Thank you for calming me down, for bringing me face to face with reality, and generally agreeing that Leo is a loser. Romba Romba Nandri.
@feelsogukk you’ve always been so supportive of me and giving me motivation. Every time you call me your fav child my lifespan increases by 7 years. Thank you for all the giggles.
@daespacito you’re such a sweet soul, calling me out on my tags, complimenting my puns. I love seeing you in my activity AND YOU’RE DRAWINGS ARE MAGNIFICENT OKAY SHARE THEM WITH THE WORLD.
