How to Cope During this Pandemic: Mental & Tips for Student
Been worried this pandemic over Online Classes, or Mental Health? Worry no more!
3 Key Points
The COVID pandemic has resulted in increased loneliness, stress, anxiety, and depression, among many Americans, including college students.
Students can use a variety of coping strategies while at home to improve their mental health.
There are local and national resources to help students receive further support.
What is happening?
In line with the social isolation effort to help flatten the COVID-19 curve, colleges across the nation have closed their campuses and dormitories, forcing students to leave their campus community, friends, classes, and familiar routines. While many students may be happy to reconnect with family again, some have returned to abusive households, others to an empty fridge, and others to no home at all. Coursework was quickly transitioned to online for the remainder of the year. Much-anticipated culminating end of the year events, including commencement ceremonies, have been canceled. Many students have lost their on-campus or local jobs, and likewise, the job search for seniors has been severely disrupted. All the while, college students are experiencing these sudden and unexpected changes while physically separated from their familiar on-campus support systems.
Impact on mental health:
It is well studied that college students are especially prone to feelings of loneliness, and they experience higher rates of anxiety and depression compared to the general population. During this period of social isolation, uncertainty and abrupt transitions, they are prone to further worsening of these feelings. Removal from their social support system and extracurricular activities at their school can cause students to feel less connected with their friends, organizations, and hobbies. In addition, they are facing uncertainty about their future, their own health, and the health of their friends and loved ones. The situation they are living through is stressful and anxiety provoking, as there is a constant fear of the unknown in addition to a loss of control, making them especially vulnerable to developing mental health concerns.
Tips for Students:
1. Know that it is okay to feel how you are feeling. It is normal during this crazy time to experience feelings of sadness, anger, frustration, anxiety, or all of the above. You are allowed to feel this way and to communicate with others how you are feeling. It is also okay to sit with these emotions. If these feelings worsen to the extent that you are no longer able to function like your normal self, reach out to one of the resources listed below for additional support.
2. Maintain a routine. Start your day at about the same time each day. Set a goal for coursework to be completed for each morning and afternoon. Maintain adequate nutrition by eating three healthy meals per day; now is a great time to try new recipes!  Try to get in at least one physical activity each day. It is very good for your mental health to get some fresh air and go on a walk, run, or bike ride.
3. Practice good sleep hygiene. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule. The goal should be 7-9 hours per night. Limit screen time in the evening, and avoid caffeine starting in the afternoon.
4. Connect with others. It is easy to quickly feel lonely and secluded from others during this stay-at-home period. Make an effort to stay socially connected by engaging in regular video or phone calls with friends and family.
5. Take a break. Take time for yourself each day. Step away from the news and from your coursework to do something you enjoy and that you find relaxing or rejuvenating.

“Mind Matters: Break the Stigma, Embrace Support”
What is Mental Health?
Mental health refers to a person's psychological, emotional, and social well-being. It encompasses how individuals think, feel, and behave in various situations, as well as how they cope with stress, relate to others, and make decisions. Mental health is influenced by biological, environmental, and socio-cultural factors, and it is crucial for overall health and well-being.
Poor mental health doesn't just affect individuals; it impacts families, communities, and entire societies. It can lead to decreased productivity, increased healthcare costs, higher rates of disability, and strained social relationships. Addressing mental health is crucial for overall societal well-being and economic stability.
Many regions lack adequate mental health services, including trained professionals, facilities, and affordable treatment options. Stigma surrounding mental illness often prevents people from seeking help, exacerbating the problem. This is particularly true in low- and middle-income countries where resources are scarce and cultural beliefs may further stigmatize mental health issues.
Addressing global mental health requires a multifaceted approach that involves collaboration between governments, healthcare systems, NGOs, communities, and individuals. It involves promoting awareness, reducing stigma, improving access to quality care, and addressing social determinants of mental health. By recognizing mental health as a global priority, we can work towards a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive mentally, emotionally, and socially.
Remember, mental health is a journey, not a destination. Together, let's create a world where everyone feels supported, understood, and empowered to prioritize their mental well-being. Join us in spreading awareness and breaking the silence surrounding mental health. #MindMatters #BreakTheStigma

My Thotz ...
What i learnt today:
Write down everything that triggers you and that you hate. Everything you have written is who you are ‘being’. It is all you believe about yourself.
For example, you tend to hate liars. That would mean you lie in some way too. Do you lie to yourself in certain areas of your life? Are you authentically you or a people pleaser? do you deny your feelings to be more accommodating or liked? Are you possibly trying to buy love from others because you don't love yourself and not facing this fact yet?
What deeper relationship could you have with whatever triggers you?
Decide what you are going to ‘think’ before it happens.
Because everything you are thinking is what you are being, you can change how you choose to react to anything that commonly happens to you. Apparently, you can change your life in this way too.
When someone rejects you in anything, it makes you frustrated, deflated. You decided to be frustrated or deflated. Instead, change your thoughts : maybe they are having a bad day, etc.
Choose to see rejection as a step to your success, your growth, your development or even opportunities.
Start doubting your doubts.
You'll know your subconscious has changed when you observe that you are having new habits.
Get rid of doubt by doing exactly what you are overthinking. Do what you are worried to do, what you are afraid to do, and what you are uncertain about to do.

How Nootropics Enhance Cognitive Potential
🧠✨ The brain, a marvel of complexity, translates chemical reactions and electrical signals into a rich tapestry of experiences, behaviors, and knowledge. Its intricate billion-neuron network communicates via neurotransmitters, the messengers of chemical communication between the brain and body. These messengers interact with receptors, forming vital systems, each with distinct functions in the nervous system. Nootropics optimize this symphony by enhancing the efficiency of neurotransmitters and pathways responsible for cognitive prowess. 🌟🤝

Introduction:
Great philosophers and thinkers have been captivated by the intricate relationship between the mind and the body. The connection between the two remains very enigmatic despite the advancement of science and discoveries. Various philosophical perspectives often offer relatable examples to grasp this complex connection. What's most relevant to me as a doctor is the rising field of "psychosomatics" which I will discuss at the end of the post.
Dualism:
Our dissection begins with dualism, a notion that separates the mind and the body as distinct entities. Dualism suggests that the mind, often referred to as the "soul" or "consciousness," is non-physical, whereas the body is purely physical. To make ourselves very familiar with the concept, we can give the example of a video game character controlled by a player: the character represents the body, while the player's decisions symbolize the mind - thus separate entities influencing one another.
Materialism:
Materialism, on the other hand, suggests that everything, including mental or psychological experiences, can be explained through physical processes. In this view, the mind is purely a product of the brain and its neurological activity. Imagine a computer program running on hardware; the program is entirely dependent on the underlying hardware. Changes in the hardware can directly affect the program's operation, similar to how the mind, according to materialism, emerges from the physical brain's activities. In real-life medical examples, people who suffer from cerebrovascular accidents, whether bleeds or strokes, lose part of their neurological functions once an area of the brain gets damaged.
Idealism:
Idealism turns the tables by suggesting that only the mind or the consciousness is genuinely real. According to this philosophical perspective, the physical world is a construct of the mind's thoughts and perceptions. To simplify that, consider a dream where the dreamer's mind generates an entire world, people, and events. In the idealist view, the external physical world resembles a dream, existing as a projection of the mind.
Neutral Monism:
Neutral monism offers a unique perspective by suggesting a "neutral substance" underlying both mental and physical phenomena. This neutral substance gives rise to the rich combination of experiences that make up our reality. Consider the concept of energy, which can manifest as both physical (e.g., kinetic energy in a moving car) and mental (e.g., the energy of thought and emotion). In neutral monism, this shared concept of energy represents the underlying reality.
Psychosomatics:
Amidst these philosophical views, psychosomatics provides real-world evidence of the mind-body connection. This field explores the interplay between the mind (psyche) and the body (soma) and how mental factors can profoundly affect our physical health. For example, stress-related illnesses, like tension headaches or stomach ulcers, exemplify how our emotional and mental states can manifest physically, leading to serious health issues. Psychosomatics highlights the significant impact of mental well-being on our physical state, bridging the gap between philosophy and practical health.
I treated a young Syrian man who was a war refugee. Years before the war, his right arm took a hit and was fractured, but it healed the same year. After the war, he survived the bombings, but most of his family and friends did not make it. He witnessed atrocities being committed before him. Later on, his brother was killed and as a result, his mother suffered a heart attack that claimed her life. He later came to Lebanon as a refugee to start a new life. When he presented to my clinic, he was complaining of right arm pain at the site of the previously healed fracture. The intensity of the pain woke him up in the middle of the night and along with it, he felt warmth in his arm and it was sweating locally.
Later, I managed to diagnose my patient with "complex regional pain syndrome". Little did I know about such a syndrome and how it exemplifies psychosomatics. Several trials recommended antidepressants to treat his condition - as well as the overlying depression he was secretly suffering from.
Conclusion:
The mind-body problem, though centuries old, remains an open question, and while we've explored a multitude of perspectives, it's clear that the debate continues. Psychosomatics offers a tangible connection between our mental and physical states, underscoring the profound implications of the mind-body relationship. From a personal experience, I witnessed the improvement of physical symptoms under the influence of an antidepressant medication. That is fascinating to encounter and since then, I always considered the psychological aspect of any chronic or acute complaint.

Mental Health: Every Mind Matters
"I would enter into what felt to my 10-year-old self like a sort of dreamy uneasiness. I was completely out of touch with my physical presence and felt my consciousness, or whatever, carry me above myself." - (Source: Putting Words to My Mental Health Struggles Saved Me - Time.)
We're ignoring 'Mental Health'
Have we left talking about mental health, or did we really start? Is that what you want for yourself? Mental health issues are there when we wake up in the morning and when we go to bed at night. Most of the time it's ignored. My twin said she forgot to tap 'into her.'
We're failing to prioritise 'Mental Health'
We're failing to prioritise mental health. We ignore how we feel, just so we can go about our daily, busy lives, but there is no health without mental health. None of us can lead a long life when we're limited by mental health.
We think about everything else
Mental health is like a faithful friend, by ignoring it we don't treat it with kindness. We think about everything else. If we want a holiday, we organise and prepare to go on holiday. If we want to go out with friends, we organise a night out, but we fail to put any importance to mental health.
Mental health is one area of our lives that we fail to prioritise.
Will you prioritise Mental Health?
I prioritise mental health, I am continually talking about mental health on my blog The CP Diary. Will you prioritise mental health?
