Top 10 Representatives (2023)
This post is for 'Top 10 Representatives' I'd like to fuck and is purely based on appearance, not politics. If you don't agree, either scroll onwards, post your own idea or try another blog.
10. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-AL 1st District)
Tumblr media
An American politician and businessman serving as the U.S. Representative for Alabama’s 1st congressional district since 2021. Nothing to base this on, but Jerry looks like he could be had, if offered… THE DICK.
9. Rep. John Carter (R-TX 31st District)
Tumblr media
Damn… they grow them hot in Texas. The U.S. Representative for Texas’s 31st congressional district, serving since 2003. Nicknamed Judge, Carter is falls in my ‘loves to fuck’ theory and he does look like he loves to fuck.
8. Rep. James Comer (R-KY 1st District)
Tumblr media
An American politician from the Commonwealth of Kentucky who currently represents the state’s 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. Something tells me he could be a great cocksucker. Just look at those lips. What? I’m not saying he is… just that he could be and I'd love to find out.
7. Rep. Jim Baird (R-IN 4th District)
Tumblr media
An American businessman and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Indiana’s 6th congressional district since 2019. The best looking Pence brother from his silver hair, down to his nice legs and his various shoes.
6. Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA 41st District)
Tumblr media
An American businessman and politician serving as the U.S. representative for California's 41st congressional district. Married young divorced not long after, no new wife or lady friend that I could find. He has a cute little dog he dresses up and carries around with him all the time. I might be projecting, but I think my chances are high with this one.
5. Greg Pence (R-IN 6th District)
Tumblr media
An American businessman and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Indiana’s 6th congressional district since 2019. The best looking Pence brother from his silver hair, down to his nice legs and his various shoes.
4. Jeff Duncan (R-SC 3rd District)
Tumblr media
An American politician who has been the United States representative for South Carolina's 3rd congressional district since 2011. Well, all I can say is this man is almost perfect for me. Why not perfect? He's not naked and in my bed with my jizz all over him. What? Then he’d be perfect.
3. Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-PA 15th District)
Tumblr media
An American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Pennsylvania's 15th congressional district since 2019. Nice and manly, he looks like he would be a champion in bed.
2. Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE 2nd District)
Tumblr media
An American politician and retired military officer serving as the U.S. representative for Nebraska's 2nd congressional district since 2017. Handsome, nice tits and body. This man is husband material. Better yet, trophy husband material. The type of guy you can walk into a room with him on your arm, telling everyone “Yeah… I’m fucking this.”
1. Rep. Mike Bost (R-IL 12th District)
Tumblr media
An American politician. This man is almost perfect. The only thing wrong with him is that he isn’t in my bed. Nice build, nice dresser and a very handsome face.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA 20th District) Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL 3rd District) Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD 5th District)

“I remember telling my office to arrange some tickets for the family. You’ve got to do that in Liverpool. And my office were over-zealous as usual. So I asked for about 30 tickets. We have a huge family on Merseyside. In fact, some are breeding as we speak- there’s always a couple on the go.
I gave the tickets to my brother Michael to sort out. Otherwise it would be like ‘ere how come SHE’S going and NOT me?’ – that type of family argument thing. So I lumbered Michael with that job.
Anyway, on the actual night they let all the family in first. I didn’t know about it so when I got on stage the first few rows of people standing there were all MY relatives. It was bit off-putting at first. There was also a heckler who asked me to play ‘Satisfaction’ – I told him that wasn’t one of ours!
After the show I went for a drink with Julia Baird – John’s half sister. It was my first bevvie of the day, because I can’t drink before a gig – I’d forget the words if I did. Then one of my cousin’s kids says to me, ‘Hey, did you hear that heckler – that was ME.’”

Imagine a Librarians / Ghosts crossover.
-Robin announcing that he went through a Magic door like in the impro and played chess with Excalibur the flying sword
-the Lits then appearing at Button House because of the high concentration of Ghosts (maybe due to a broken ley line?) And posing as guests but they all can see the Ghosts and find out that it really isn't that kind of haunted house.
-Flynn and Jake playing chess against Robin and Julian
-Kitty and Cassie being the sweetest , bubbliest together
-Cassie bonding with Fanny because they are both science girls especially maths girls
-Baird and Allison bonding over their mom-friend roles
-Ezekiel getting into arguments about stealing with Pat and talking about the universe and Aliens with Robin
-Coronel Baird and the Captain bonding over their military history and their whole way to approach missions and problems because they were both soldiers
-Jake and Humphrey talking about History and Art and Art History and architecture for hours and tracking down humphrey's body so Humphrey can give Jake a house tour.
-Jake and Thomas fighting about Byron and poetry in general. It gets nasty Thomas goes into the lake before Jake helps him with his own poetry by talking about the true meaning and beauty of poetry
-Jake trying to learn as much as possible from Robin.
-Cassie making an impression on Julian when she uses mathemagics to help him with his online golf
-Mike and Baird just hanging out with each other being the most normal ones, adoring their very special significant others
-Robin being fascinated by Cassie's powers
-Julian getting a talking to from Baird and being super impressed afterwards because she means business
-Pat recruiting Ezekiel to food Club
-Ezekiel and Julian bonding over being tricksters/the Art of spin
-Jenkins showing up and impressing all of the Ghosts and they all swap stories from their times. Like when he remembers that he once was a guest at Button House. Or the Ghosts ask him what he did during their respective lifeteime etc.
-Jenkins bonding with Pat over their caretaker roles
-the Captain and Jenkins bonding over Stories about ancient battles
-Humphrey and Jenkins sharing a similar humour also the years of being alone also Humphrey is keen on Arthurian legend (my HC) and Jenkins is Galahad so.
-Jenkins impressing Fanny because he uses the proper etiquette from her time and is a true gentleman
-Cassie (aka a "Cassandra, a remarkable young woman") bonding with the Captain over the limpet mine project because she hast questions and he tells her about some difficult calculations and she solves them in a few heartbeats and he tells her how they could have used someone with her gifts back then but that his Lieutenant was very bright and he was glad to have him there and because her gaydar pings and she tells him about her Vampire (ex-) girlfriend.
-Ezekiel hanging out with Jemima ,playing dolls, because she reminds him of the time when he was a lost kid and because that's exactly whom he swore to help
-Flynn just being utterly enarmoured by the Plague Ghosts and spending a lot of time with them.
-ezekiel arguing with Fanny over her views on Australia. When Jake points out that he was indeed a thief he exclaims that that's besides the point
-also I feel like the salt of the earth, worked on an oil rig, cowboy with the 190 iq, love for travel, art , poetry etc., with the gentle smile and warm brown eyes and strong arms because of the martial arts would probably be worth a "Good Lord" upon first sight. (Flynn also looks like he fits the bill but I feel his energy is too manic in comparison. Jake is closer in demeanour to Havers, Adam and the Chap with the arms). Also I just really love Jake)

How did Mary McCartney have cancer? And when did Paul find out?
Hiya anon—apologies about the late response here, hope you still see it though!
I was *very* confused when I first read this, because I thought you meant Pauls daughter Mary and I was like “what?? I haven’t heard about this!”. Eventually realised though that you were talking about the famous Mother Mary.
According to Beatles bible, Mary McCartney had breast cancer, and on October 31st 1956, just over a month from her 47th birthday, she died of an embolism following an operation to stop the cancer spreading. (x)
However, @delightfullyatomicfest points out in a post that there are some inconsistencies when it comes to the timeline of Marys illness and how Paul and Mike found out. Essentially though, in some biographies you’ll find that Marys cancer went undiagnosed until 1956, while in others you’ll find she was diagnosed in 1948/1950. OP makes some interesting points, and Id highly recommend giving their post a read for further information on this!
In Chris Salewicz’s biography, he writes of Mary being in agonising pain over the summer of 1956, after dropping Paul and Mike off at a scout summer camp:
It was on this return journey that the nagging ache that Mary had felt in her chest for some weeks suddenly erupted into shrill agony. So far, she and Jim had dismissed the small lump that had appeared on one of her breasts as just one more irritating symptom of the "change of life" that Mary, at forty-six, was beginning to undergo. But on that drive back to Allerton the pain she suddenly experienced was so intense that she had to lie down on the back seat of Olive's small car. With this physical hurt almost matched by an excoriating mental anguish caused by the fact that her worst secret fear was perhaps being realised, Mary went straight to bed as soon as the car pulled up outside their trim, terraced house at 20 Forthlin Road, Liverpool 18. After a few hours, however, the pain subsided, and, with a nurse's distaste for symptoms of hypochondria, Mary stubbornly refused to mention it to any of the doctors she worked alongside.
But Mary's symptoms would not be ignored, and a few weeks after the boys' return from scout camp, twelve-year-old Michael surprised his mother one afternoon in his parents’ bedroom. Clutching a crucifix and a photograph of a relative who was a Catholic priest, Mary McCartney was quietly sobbing to herself: the pain was returning sporadically, each time with an increased anger.
Within a month, even Mary had run out of excuses for not seeking medical assistance. After an emergency consultation with a specialist, she was promptly admitted to Liverpool's Northern Hospital. Cancer of the breast was diagnosed: a mastectomy was immediately prescribed. Exploratory surgery, however, revealed that the cancer had spread far beyond the area where the symptoms had manifested themselves; it was decided that removal of her breast would accomplish little, if anything. The probings of the surgeon's scalpel, moreover, seemed to have unleashed the worst, final fury of the disease. Mary received the last rites and had rosary beads tied around her wrists. “I would have liked to have seen the boys growing up,” she whispered to Dill, her brother Bill's wife. Within a matter of hours of being admitted to Northern, Mary Patricia McCartney's life had ended. — McCartney: The Biography by Chris Salewicz (pg. 8-9)
By all accounts neither Paul or Mike knew about her cancer, with Paul stating in the anthology:
My mum dying when I was fourteen was the big shock in my teenage years. She died of cancer, I learnt later. I didn’t know then why she had died. […] When she died, I remember thinking, ‘You asshole, why did you do that? Why did you have to put your mum down?’ I think I’ve just about got over it now, doctor. (x)
Mike also said in a 2014 interview:
“We were the original Fab Four—Mum, Dad, Paul and me,” says Mike. “When she died, I blamed everyone, including God, until I slowly worked out why she died. I think the reason was for us to learn from her death and treasure every second of life.” — Interview with Mike McCartney, 2014 via @maclen100
Furthermore in Lewisohn's Tune In, he writes:
Mary McCartney had her 47th birthday on 29 September, receiving all the usual felicitations for ‘many happy returns’. She now knew otherwise. Around this time, amid discretion so great her two children knew nothing of it for a long time to come, she went into hospital for a mastectomy. Breast cancer had been diagnosed. Jim knew the score but adhered to Mary’s wish that Paul and Mike not be told: mum was the word. The closest either came to finding anything amiss was when Mike investigated a curious sound coming from his mother’s bedroom. ‘I could just hear this strange noise, it sounded like crying, so I went into her room and there she was doing her rosary beads. I said, “What’s wrong, Mum?” and she said [swiftly], “Nothing, son.” She knew what was happening.’ (pg. 152)
Paul and Mike may have been kept in the dark about her cancer diagnosis, but it does seem they were made aware of her illness given that they visited her in hospital shortly before she passed:
Despite instructions to rest, the day before she went into hospital she cleaned the house and washed and pressed her sons’ clothes. She wanted, she told her sister, to leave everything ready, “in case I don’t come back”.
The following day Paul and Michael went to see their mother after the operation. There was blood on the white sheets. “It was terrible,” Paul would remember. — Ray Connolly, 2013
"So when she got ill, she just got ill. And when she went to hospital, she was just in hospital for a short while. And it was all not spoken about it. And it wasn't until much later that I learned that she had, in fact, died of breast cancer. — Paul McCartney, NPR interview, 2001
Following their mothers death, they were sent to live with their aunt and uncle. In Salewicz biography, one of Pauls school teachers recalls see’s seeing him on the day of her passing:
It was Durband, who was Paul's form master for the three years leading up to his taking his O level GCEs, who in 1956 sent a letter around to the other teachers, suggesting tolerance of any sense of strangeness emanating from Paul McCartney. “He'd had a bad break, his mother had died. He did go through a bit of a rough patch then. I think it shattered him a lot; maybe it made him turn to other things, like practicing his guitar and getting away from the school environment, which was very academic. But his mother's death certainly didn't have the effect of making him become noticeably difficult. I vividly remember on the day it happened him coming into the class, in room thirty-two, and going to his desk, which always used to be under a window. He was still very nice, very polite, and always softly spoken…” (pg. 33-34)
Unfortunately, I haven’t come across any sources stating how either Paul or Mike found out about their mothers cancer—so I haven’t got an answer for that.
It does however seem that Paul learnt of her cancer diagnosis sometime in the years 1956 or 1957, given that Julia Lennon, Johns mother, knew of it:
Our kitchen was increasingly a practise arena for the small clubs and the talent contests that they were entering. When Mummy learned that Paul’s mother had died of breast cancer the previous year, she exhorted John to bring Paul home to eat. ‘That poor boy. He’s lost his mother.’ — Imagine This: Growing Up with My Brother John Lennon (p. 162)
Perhaps Paul ended up just sort of hearing it through the grapevine? Im not sure—but I hope this post was of some help anyway! And if anyone wants to add to it, please feel free to.

Dollar Bin #28:
Mike Heron's Smiling Men with Bad Reputations
Tumblr media
In 2003 I spent a day with two way-out-of-my-league hipsters. I was not cool: a social worker married with a 1 year old; I had no thoughtful facial hair or ironic t-shirts; they were the epitome of cool: screenwriters and poets by day and ladies men by night; it goes without saying that both had very thoughtful facial hair and very ironic t-shirts. Together we visited one of San Francisco's hippest independent music stores.
Once in the door, we split up. My peers thumbed and nodded their way through the Stereolab and Flaming Lips sections while making confident small talk with the shop's owner about how Jeff Tweedy had plagiarized him on basically all of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (the store had a big, loud, handwritten editorial on this subject on prominent display: according to the shop, they'd turned Tweedy on to the source for all the background noise on the record - you know, the lady repeating the call sign title and the swirling jet streams of periodic chaos - and therefore they deserved co-songwriting credits for everything; but they were way too cool to consider legal action, and, what's more, they considered the music Tweedy and Co had made detracted from and trivialized the original, CD collection of white noise, which they still exclusively sold for only 28 bucks) while I hit the shop's very small and disregarded Dollar Bin on the floor in a corner.
2003 was, as you know, still the height of the CD era. Only cheapskates like me still bought records, let alone still owned a record player. I had that Dollar Bin all to myself.
Similarly, the Incredible String Band was not enjoying any kind of renaissance at that point. (They've never really had one. I'm starting it right now.) In 03 people were still very much reeling from 9/11, wrestling with the Bush presidency and downloading Nabster. Everyone was listening to Outkast and Radiohead, not hippies who sang about minotaurs.
And so when I passed a Dollar Bin copy of Mike Heron's Smiling Men with Bad Reputations across that august shop's counter for purchase everything got real awkward real fast. The owner rang me up with disdain and great reluctance, like he was worried that Tweedy might show up at that very moment, his full, written apology in hand, and then see my transaction going down and change his mind. My hipster friends took deep breaths and suggested I get a bag with which to carry the record back to their squat; after all, flashing Mike Heron on vinyl was gonna cut our cool factor in front of the SF ladies down into the negatives.
Happily, the only lady I've wanted to impress since 1992 is my wife (only she can tell by the way I use my walk I'm a ladies man, no time to talk). And happily, I have no pride. So I declined the shop's bag and told everyone present that Mike Heron's first solo record rocked - think VU's third record, I told them, if Cale had fired Reed and replaced him with Brian Wilson and everyone was way into Scientology. The embarrassed sighs that greeted this speech were collective; had I asked for a copy of their white noise album the owner dude would have claimed they were sold out.
Listen: I am never shy about making a fool out of myself when it comes to Mike Heron. I once sat at a bar for an hour with the great Meg Baird before one of her Heron Oblivion shows. We were the only people there; I was so excited for their show that I showed up ridiculously early (again, I'm a no pride person).
Meg and I talked about her music for a bit, then I name dropped my famous brother, who she totally knew, because, you know, he's famous. Once discussion of his fame petered out, and after she'd politely asked me this and that about my own life, I got down to the most important topic of that or just about any other evening: Mike Heron.
Me: So, Meg, I'm guessing your band's name, Heron Oblivion, is a tribute to the great Mike Heron, yes?
Meg, who was fingering her Led Zeppelin necklace and thinking big deal rock and roll thoughts: Uh, Who's Mike Heron?
Me: You know Meg, from The Incredible String Band! Mike and Robin Williamson were Paul McCartney's favorite musicians in 1968. Paul's a smart guy, some of the time. Jimmy Page played on Mike's first solo record!
Meg: Oh yeah, right, Mike Heron. No, we definitely did not name our band after anyone in the Incredible String Band. We were thinking about the bird actually. You know, herons.
Me: There's a bird named after Mike Heron?
Okay, so I admit it: I didn't say that the last line. But I wish I had! And the rest of my story is true. Finally, who knows, maybe herons really are named after Mike, pictured flush left, who wrote about so masterfully about amoebas living the timeless life.
youtube
What song can you name that's more unique, bizarre and wonderful? That's right, none. Here's what I think: if indeed there are not already birds named after Mike Heron, then I think we should find some new ones and name them Mike Heron.
Back at the bar, I did go on to suggest, very earnestly, that Meg and her bandmates consider covering Feast of Stephen, the final track on the A side of Smiling Men with Bad Reputations. The track is totally ready for Heron Oblivion's twin guitar attack under Baird's howling vocals. Baird very nicely decided that she needed to get a life and stop talking to me at that point. I don't blame her, but I stand by my suggestion. Feast of Stephen is an under the radar platter of sonic sweetmeats ready for everyone's consumption. Eat it now.
youtube
Let's get into a little background on my man Mike and the story behind this record from 71.  ISB had made 6 or 7 (or maybe 8?!) records in the previous 5 years, records that are alternatively silly and deeply spiritual.  Heron typically wrote the lighter and more joyful tracks, except when he didn't.  Williamson wrote droning, brooding epics that turned delightful corners, except when he didn't.  The two men sounded as good together as they look on the cover of The Big Huge: clear eyed young geniuses sharing a double bill, like a behind the looking glass version of Lennon and McCartney with all their angst and megalomania swapped out for earnest, unbridled joy, plus kazoo solos.
Tumblr media
The boys played every instrument imaginable and included their lady friends, Rose and Licorice, who sang and played bass like they were in The Shaggs.  Song topics ranged from the joy one can find in a box of paints or new puppies to the meaning of life.  Imagine Robyn Hitchcock and Rafi dropping LSD and then sharing a jet ski. Why isn't everyone into the Incredible String Band?
But somewhere right before Heron slipped away on his own to make Smiling Men with Bad Reputations, Scientology slipped its slimy, parasitic hooks into the duo. It would quickly suck them dry.  Under evil uncle L. Ron's sway, Williamson's songs got longer and wilder, almost unlistenable.  Heron, his head at least momentarily more firmly in place, decided it was time to rock. And so he called his famous friends and admirers. They all came. And I mean all of them: sessions for Smiling Men with Bad Reputations featured most of The Who, Elton John, most of the Fairport/Fotheringay crew, and Stephen Winwood. Oh yeah, and Jimmy Page.  What's more, John Cale arranged much of the record, filling in all the cracks with his signature swelling grace; the ubiquitous Joe Boyd produced.
Heron may not be on any hipster's radar this century but he was, for a moment, the leading hipster in England in 71. Everyone wanted to spin in his wacky orbit. I imagine Lennon and McCartney showed up hoping to contribute but were simply not needed. (Stephen Stills, who, dedicated readers of the Dollar Bin will remember, was living in Ringo Starr's mansion at that point, surely heard that Heron had a song in development entitled Feast of Stephen and assumed the song was dedicated to his mastery; when he showed up to grace the sessions with his presence I trust Richard Thompson karate chopped him in onto his keister.)
Happily, Heron didn't simply bask joyfully in his famous friends attention.  He brought his best work to the table.  The album opens with Call Me Diamond, a joyful, flinging horn ride; it's weird the B52's never covered it.
Flowers of the Forest follows, featuring Richard Thompson's unmistakable gurgling guitar leads; the song is very nearly perfect.  All that's missing is Cale's polish; he appears on much, but not all, of the record.  Why, oh why, didn't Joe Boyd insist that Cale get his hands on every single song?  Even so, I encourage you to listen to Heron's passionate track alongside another masterpiece Cale did in fact arrange that same year, Nick Drake's Northern Sky.  What are better love songs than these?
youtube
youtube
All of Side 1 is packed with equally good ideas, the tone jumping from wild to earnest to gentle then epic.  Unfortunately, much of the flip side is dedicated to Warm Heart Pastry, Heron's paean to the kind of meat that is placed inside dough. Mike fronts The Who on the track which sounds awesome on paper; but the results don't fully justify its 6 minute run time.
Still, let's cut Mike a break. Smiling Men has got everything, even has a goofy, incomprehensible cover.  (What the hell is the story being told on the gatefold, anyway?  Heron joyfully presents a pineapple to a chaotic mod of Halloween Saudi sheikhs; there's enough aluminum foil on hand to cover a whale sized burrito.  I can't understand any of what is going, but I sure wish someone had invited me to the party.)
Tumblr media
So, why isn't this record famous? Why didn't Heron sell enough copies to instantly become chief captain of Scientology's battleship and crash all those John Travolta-look-a-like aliens that are secretly controlling our thoughts into the sun? As near as I can tell - and I'd love to hear from someone who knows better - Heron escaped the cult in the early 80's, but he hasn't made music of note in 50 years. What happened?
I don't know, but Mike is still alive and well. Rick Rubin, Heron Oblivion or Jeff Tweedy should get their act together and lure Heron back in the studio with them for a final run of genius. I have no doubt that the music they could create together would finally bring Heron the recognition he deserves.
And hey, Rick/Jeff/Meg: when you settle into the studio to record it all, let Mike know that I will graciously keep quiet about how the entire project is essentially plagiarism of The Dollar Bin (so long as I'm granted co-songwriting credits, of course).

Was John Philip Shenale a part of something like the Wrecking Crew? If he was, he probably had a couple of buddies he worked with. Look, I am not sure on whether or not he and Bill Wray are close, though I assume they sort of had a camaderie, since they both had a similar type of a career. Still, Mr. Wray tried to do his own solo material more often than Mr. Shenale. Therefore, we can find him playing on Mr. Wray's Seize The Moment, which could be seen as a formidable slice of the 80's rock. This is also a bad thing, because everything seems so shiny you have a hunch the entire things was made out of rejected parts from other musicians during the period. Sure, Mr. Wray knows what he's doing, yet he should be willing to bend the rule more to his whim.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
It's easy for great blue herons to keep themselves clean; these birds have a built-in scrubbing powder! Specialized feathers on their chest fray as they grow, and herons use the resulting powder to clean themselves of oil and dirt when they preen.

You're mean
i'm still in the limited access beta phase of my personality. the devs have had a hard time transitioning to the exploding userbase, especially balancing it with a new interest in birdwatching. have you seen the black-crowned night heron? it's got the most goth name i've ever heard on a bird and it indeed looks like a goth kid getting overstimulated at a middle school dance its mom tried to make it presentable for

Interested in your perception of Julia Baird’s portrait or Mimi vs more common narrative that Mimi rescued John from his mother Julia’s irresponsible parenting. I go back and forth between vilifying Mimi and considering that it might have been a challenging situation if Julia Baird’s dad was alcoholic and didn’t want John around. Although I lean towards holding Mimi accountable for getting social services involved to take away Julia’s custody rights….
First off: obligatory "It was a different time", except I do want to emphasize it, because it's not only to contextualize some of Mimi's behaviour that a lot of people might classify as emotional abuse nowadays, but because it affects literally all of this. Social mores dictated the actions not just of Mimi but of all the Stanley sisters, who in my view all enabled the situation to get as far as it did. And, most pertinently, I don't think people at the time really understood how damaging it is to all parties to separate a child from their parents (and tbh, especially their mother). My main takeaway from the whole situation, as well as what I've learned about "difficult homes" since, is that taking John away from Julia should have been an absolute last resort, unless there was extremely concrete evidence that Julia was being highly abusive towards him.
(and I do mean highly abusive. It, for instance, would not have done Paul and Mike any good to be separated from their father, even if Jim put them through hell at times [though of course, the extent of the abuse they suffered is debatable]. These situations are terrible all-around, but from what I can tell – and what I think John's story shows – breaking apart families is very rarely the best course of action.)
"But Julia was making little John share a bed with her and Bobby Dykins!" – okay, I see how this is potentially a problem, though it's from what I can tell entirely (implied? I don't know that she went so far as to say it out loud) conjecture on Mimi's part that John was made to witness adults having sex. In my opinion, the first course of action here should have been to help Julia out by acquiring a separate bed for John.
I recognize that Julia was probably often irresponsible and, from what I've read about her, I suspect she at times struggled with parenting in way similar to how John would later on – not due to a lack of love, per se, more due to a helplessness in the face of the true burden of taking care of someone and a difficulty comprehending the seriousness and scope of child-rearing. That being said, it's hard to fully blame her when she had her toddler taken away – because of her own sister, as you mention – and had to give up her second baby for adoption. That's twice-over the worst trauma a mother could endure* so it seems natural to me that she would have attachment issues with John later on. Again, helping Julia with her parenting instead of denying her the role of mother seems to me the best course of action here. (Oh look, it's my nuclear family take rearing its head again.)
*some people happily give up babies – I don't have much reason to believe Julia was one of them.
I also think Mimi thought she was doing the right thing and her decision to take John in admittedly made more sense when Uncle George was still alive. This is where the "It was a different time" comes back in, because it would be unfair of me to expect her to understand all the complexity I've been describing. I don't know that I believe Julia Baird's claim that Mimi instigated the entire situation so she could have John for herself – but there is perhaps a middle ground here, where Mimi loved her nephew a lot, felt no one was taking care of him the way she believed he needed, and let that blind her to the damage she was going to inflict by interfering the way she did.
It's difficult to fully assess Mimi's impact on John, because it seems the abandonment issues his early childhood instilled in him made him particularly loyal to her. Mimi was, if nothing else and above all, steadfast. (You can draw a parallel here to Yoko, though that's another discussion.) You aren't gonna find a ton of statements from him condemning her, and I definitely don't want to discount the genuine love they both had for each other. I appreciate that she didn't have an easy task, bringing him up, especially after being widowed, and I appreciate that she came through for him in significant ways.
The thing that motivated my (somewhat callous) post last night, was this:
"You wonder why John didn't have the strength to just say 'Look Mimi, I'm moving in with Mum.'" JULIA BAIRD: "Hm. Well, I remember the– a particular row in the kitchen, where he was going back [to Mendips] after the school holidays and he was crying. And my father [Bobby Dykins] said 'That's it. That's it. I've had enough. You stay here. I'll go and see Mimi. I will sort this out once and for all.' And John said 'Nononono, nonono. I've got to go. Don't tell Mimi.' That was another refrain [?]. 'My dream's out.' and 'Don't tell Mimi. Don't tell Mimi, don't tell Mimi.' She was fearsome, I can tell you. Fearsome." SOURCE: I am the Eggpod, Episode 100, 00:49:49
What I hate about the above quote the most is how often John, even as a teen, is conceptualized as this free-spirited rebel*; but looking at this, it hits extra hard that he was a child who had virtually no power in this situation the adults around him put him in.
*and writers like Mark Lewisohn are definitely not off the hook here; one of the things I find the most questionable about him as a biographer is that, despite his painfully obvious bias towards John, he still fails to contextualize huge chunks of John's childhood, preferring to defend Mimi at all cost.
Now, it does seem like there's some he-said/she-said going on regarding how much Bobby Dykins and John got along. I don't think John spoke super highly of him, but I also don't recall him expressing any larger issues with his pseudo step-father. Yes, Julia Baird is probably biased towards her own parents, but here's the thing: don't most of our pro-Mimi accounts come from her? Is John an unbiased source on the aunt who raised him?
So why should Julia Baird – whom I consider to be one of the most empathetic characters involved in Beatles history; rarely have I seen someone so interested in truly understanding their own family history, considering the cultural context, tying in her experience as a teacher in special needs and talking to multiple people to gain a fuller picture, even when a lot of it must've been incredibly painful for her – be seen as a less trustworthy source than Mimi – who we know has a history of editing stories to suit her:
I [Hunter Davies, the Beatles' official biographer] sent [the manuscript of the biography] to Mimi and she had hysterics. The chapter about his childhood came back with almost every paragraph heavily crossed out or amended. In the margins she had written beside John's own quotes such things as 'Rubbish', 'Never!' She denied so many of John's own memories of his childhood, especially if they contradicted her memories of the same people or events. She was against his use of bad language, as she maintained John had never sworn when he was little, and didn't want stories about him stealing. SOURCE: The Beatles by Hunter Davies, 2009 Introduction
The only thing Mimi has "going for her" as a source is that she was an adult and not a child when these events transpired. I think that's fair enough, and I do believe there are details to this story Julia Baird and we the public will never know, which made Mimi's decisions seem more justified to her and to her family. But that doesn't stop me from largely condemning most of the decisions made, even though I suspect Julia did at least on the surface agree with them.
