Few guitarists have had as big an impact on jazz and fusion music as Allan Holdsworth. Born seventy-seven years ago today on August 6, 1946, in Bradford, England, Holdsworth revolutionized the capabilities of the instrument with his innovative playing technique, refined harmonic sense, and limitless invention. He received a great deal of praise for his distinctive style of guitar…

What makes a jazz musician a jazz one? Why am I asking this? You see, the genre appears to be in a weird paradox, because there has been so much development going on in there, yet I assume many continue to mention the usual names about the most prominent players of the idiom. One could say that's understandable, but there's a sense the style stopped for some people in a distant past. I mean, Allan Holdsworth might not be familiar to those who occasionally listen to the brand, though they should've, since he provided this set of music with a development some of his peers seemed to ignore. I agree, this might be a bit too strong, yet you have to understand jazz got at one point reduced to a set of cliches. Actually, the genre became much more interesting than we give the style a credit for.

Quesito

“Girl From The North Country” - Bob Dylan, Rundown Studios, Santa Monica, California, February 1, 1978
Dylan-heads should definitely read Ray Padgett’s recent interview with Alan Pasqua, the keyboardist whose experience with Bob spans from 1978 to 2020, from Budokan to “Murder Most Foul.” Tons of interesting info and details — this tidbit about a “Murder Most Foul” demo is very intriguing:
They were playing a demo. I heard it and I just couldn't believe it. In rock music, things usually have a specific beat and pulse. This was free. The time was free. It was elastic. It wasn't specific to a certain time, feel or tempo. It just moved and flowed. When I was done listening to the track, I turned to Bob and I said, "My god, Bob, this sounds to me like A Love Supreme.” He just stopped and he looked at me. I thought, "Oh, I'm going to get fired" again. [laughs]
Anyway, good stuff — check it out and subscribe to Ray’s Dylan newsletter, he’s doing great work. And listen to Pasqua and Dylan at the very beginning of their on-off collaboration, rehearsing for the 1978 Far East tour in Santa Monica. The ‘78 period is sometimes referred to as the “Big Band era” but some of the best stuff was stripped down and spare. This “Girl From The North Country” is fragile and lovely, Pasqua adding a simple and beautiful organ part to Dylan’s soft vocal, as the rest of the players fill in behind them gradually.

Fuzzy Music , 2019
Cztery muzyczne znakomitości. Trzy wieczory w Los Angeles. Niewielki klub nieopodal lotniska. Dwadzieścia utworów (choć tylko siedemnaście kompozycji, bowiem „Have You Met Miss Jones?” powtarza się trzykrotnie, a „The Honeymoon” dwa razy). Precyzyjnie wyliczone czasy trwania poszczególnych setów – każdy oscylujący w granicach godziny i dziesięciu minut.
Pozazdrościć moż…
