Brett Tuggle, Who Backed Fleetwood Mac for Two Decades, Dies at 70
- Multi-instrumentalist’s credits also include David Lee Roth, Steppenwolf, Coverdale/Page and others
Multi-instrumentalist Brett Tuggle, who played onstage with Fleetwood Mac for two decades, has died.
“Sad news … delightful man,” said David Coverdale, who worked with Tuggle in his eponymous Coverdale/Page project with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page.
Tuggle was 70 and reportedly died June 19 of cancer.
From 1997 to 2017, Tuggle toured with Fleetwood Mac playing auxiliary keyboard and guitar. He also joined Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham on solo tours.
“He was one of those rare musicians that no matter what he played, it always sounded awesome, felt great and no wasted notes,” said Chicago drummer Walfredo Reyes Jr., who played with Tuggle in Buckingham’s groups and in various session gigs.
“If the U.N. would have hired Brett there would be peace in the world, (be)cause he had a special way of solving problems, and finding good solutions to every situation,” Reyes wrote on Facebook.
Tuggle’s other sideman credits include stints with Rick Springfield, John Kay and Steppenwolf, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels and David Lee Roth, for whom he co-wrote “Just Like Paradise.”
“God blues his beautiful spirit,” Springfield said of his former collaborator.
Tuggle was “the secret weapon” of Roth’s Eat ’Em and Smile album and tour, bassist Billy Sheehan said on Twitter.
“Loved by everyone that ever met him, and gifted with supreme talent - rest in peace,” Sheehan wrote. “We will never forget you.”

Former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth has released a new single, and it's an affectionate look back at his time with the band.
Called Nothing Could Have Stopped Us Back Then Anyway, the single's YouTube thumbnail is a picture of the original Van Halen line-up, while the song itself – a wistful affair with a touch of Crosby, Stills & Nash about it – features lyrics that relate to Roth's time with the band.
Highlights include, "We laughed, we cried, we threw the television off that balcony. That memory means so much to me", "Remember when you safety pinned the tablecloth to my pants" and "Kicked out the restaurant to make the night complete, six pack and a happy meal on a park bench down the street."
The song comes from acoustic sessions Roth recorded with guitarist John 5 in 2007, alongside Skyscraper-era Roth band drummer Gregg Bissonette and keyboardist Brett Tuggle. Later, John told Guitar World that the sessions had resulted in an album's worth of material.
"Dave and I have about 12 or 13 songs in the can for a future record," John 5 said. "And it’s all acoustic. But not strummy, campfire stuff – I’m talking lots of cool, crazy jazz chords, and 50 or 60 overdubbed guitar tracks, with all this harmonising and other weird stuff going on. Dave’s vocals are incredible. He sings his ass off."
Other songs to have emerged from the sessions include Somewhere Over The Rainbow Bar and Grill, which Roth released in 2020, and Giddy-Up, which came out in May last year, but it's Nothing Could Have Stopped Us Back Then Anyway that excites John 5.
"It’s unbelievable," he told al.com last year. "Being a Van Halen fan and a Dave Lee Roth fan, it’s unbelievable because it’s about Dave singing about Van Halen and what it was like. Really something special, so I really hope that comes out."

Time for your Rock Report
On September 23, Motörhead will release 40th anniversary editions of their fifth studio album, Iron First.
Originally released in 1982, Iron First was the final album from the legendary English metal band with its classic "Three Amigos" lineup of Lemmy Kilmister, "Fast" Eddie Clarke, and Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor.
"To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Iron Fist we're proud to announce deluxe, expanded editions of this seminal album with lots of previously unreleased bonus tracks, new sleevenotes and many unseen photos," the band said in its announcement. The special edition of Iron First will be available in two-CD and three-LP media-book formats, featuring a remaster of the original album, previously unreleased demos and a full concert from the band's performance at the Glasgow Apollo on March 18, 1982.
Former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth recently shared an acoustic single that pays tribute to his legendary band. "We laughed, we cried, we threw the television off that balcony," the opening lyrics go.
The track features a picture of the original Van Halen lineup: Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony, as its cover on YouTube and streaming services. According to Louder, "Nothing Could Have Stopped Us Back Then Anyway" is part of a song series that Roth recorded with guitarist John 5 in 2007, alongside drummer Gregg Bissonette and keyboardist Brett Tuggle.
Legendary Beatles drummer Ringo Starr will release a four-track album, EP3, on September 16.
The four new tracks were all recorded at Starr's Roccabella West studio, featuring longtime collaborators Steve Lukather, Linda Perry, Dave Koz, José Antonio Rodriguez, and Bruce Sugar. The songs span the spectrum of pop, country, reggae and rock and roll. EP3 will be available digitally and on CD on September 16, and on 10" vinyl and as a limited edition translucent royal blue cassette on November 18. "I am in my studio writing and recording every chance I get. It's what I have always done and will continue to do, and releasing EPs more frequently allows me to continue to be creative and give each song a little more love," said Ringo.
The upbeat rocker "World Go Round," written by Lukather and Joseph Williams, continues to spread Ringo's positive message of hope and togetherness.

Sorry for your loss… Repost from @lindseybuckingham • I am deeply saddened by the passing of our longtime musical comrade, Brett Tuggle. Brett was a collaborator, a friend, a brother. For over twenty five years, his versatility and soaring spirit contributed greatly to both Fleetwood Mac’s and my solo tours. Brett’s unique gifts always helped enable us to bring our musical visions to life on stage; off stage, his charm and buoyancy enlightened all who spent time with him. Professionally and personally, I feel lucky to have been close to Brett. He will be greatly missed. #lindseybuckingham #bretttuggle https://www.instagram.com/p/CfUVyy7LYyj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Time for today’s Rock Report,
British music icons Duran Duran and Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi are among the artists set to perform at the Opening Ceremony of the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, U.K. The Artistic Director of the Opening Ceremony, on Wednesday unveiled the music line-up that will provide the soundtrack for the ceremony. Returning to the city where their four-decade career began, Duran Duran will draw the Opening Ceremony to a close, performing four much-loved tracks from their catalogue. The ceremony will feature some of the city's most celebrated artists as well as its emerging talent on stage.
Elton John has added five special "encore" performances to his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour In Australia and New Zealand next year. The new shows are scheduled to be held in Newcastle, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Christchurch. The newly announced dates are in addition to two rescheduled shows at Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium on January 27 and 28, 2023, as a tribute to fans who've waited patiently for his return.
His Christchurch show is set for January 24 at Orangetheory Stadium. John embarked on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, a multi-year itinerary comprising over 300 shows across five continents, in September 2018.
After two years of Covid interruptions, he is back on stage again.
Former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth recently released a new song "Pointing at the Moon" and an accompanying a video. The YouTube page that showcases "Pointing at the Moon" doesn't offer musician credits or any other information about its recording. The piano/acoustic guitar ballad is the first new music from Roth since 2020, when he included five previously unreleased songs in The Roth Project, an online comic narrated by the singer. The songs included guitar and bass by John 5, Greg Bissonette on drums, Brett Tuggle on keys and Luis Conte on percussion. During a recent interview on AL.com, John 5 spoke about his work with Roth, saying, "You can't deny a good song and Dave writes good songs. He's written some of the most amazing songs of our lifetime, and Dave worked really hard on these lyrics. I'm not sure when it's going to come out or if it'll come out, but I hope it does." Roth announced his retirement in October 2021, saying he would end his career with a series of January 2022 shows in Las Vegas. However, he canceled all the dates due to COVID-related concerns.
