Character Agency
Your characters should have agency. That means they have the power to influence what’s happening around them. We talked a bit about agency last time, revolving around how many female characters get agency stripped away from them. But overall, agency is important for any character to make them active participants in their own stories and feel necessary to the plot.
So here’s how you enable your characters agency:
1. They make active decisions
Okay this is the obvious one in theory, but still manages to sneak by in stories undetected. An active character with agency makes things happen through their decisions, instead of just their reactions. Take these two examples of a scene plan:
John is walking home when he is caught by a sudden storm. Looking to hide from the rain, he ducks under the cover of a bus shelter. Inside is Mya, and they strike up a conversation about their shared sucky situation.
Vs.
John is walking home when he is caught by a sudden storm. Luckily he brought an umbrella in his bag, and draws it out. Then, he sees Mya getting drenched by the rain ahead of him. He jogs to her, offering to share the umbrella. They strike up a conversation.
In the second example John isn’t just reacting but making a choice that’s changed something in the world. He may just happen to run into Mya, but it was his decision to run up to her, to offer her his umbrella. This action is a great indicator of his personality—he’s kind, trusting, and thoughtful even towards strangers.
That’s the most important part. A character who just reacts to everything doesn’t show off any personality, whereas action lets you demonstrate who your character is at their core (especially in difficult situations that call for difficult decisions).
2. Their actions have consequences
Similarly, the decisions your active character makes aren’t really decisions if they don’t impact any part of their world. For good or for bad, every decision your character makes should have a consequence. This could be shown through their relationships with others, their environment, or even their own mental, physical, or spiritual state.
If we’re going from the example above, John sharing his umbrella with Mya maybe starts their friendship, but her jealous, toxic boyfriend sees them through his window, making her and now his life difficult.
It’s a decision that has multiple consequences throughout his life—a new friendship, and also a new enemy. And Mya is also facing consequences—from her decision to walk with him, and his decision to offer her the umbrella.
Make sense? How do you ensure your character has agency?

What a pleasant view at Hedgehog Town's Sparkling Lake.
Unfortunately, some people can't even have a single moment alone without someone interrupting and being verry persistent with it too..
This took a bit, due to me losing some hefty progress on pages 7 and 8, but still really proud of how these turned out! Hope you guys enjoy!

One thing I absolutely love in games, especially RPG's, is there being one guy who Definitely Should Be The Main Character but because the player character is there, he's playing sidekick.
Like, the best example is Alistair in Dragon Age Origins, what with him being the true king, half human and half elf, has dragon blood and Darkspawn blood knocking around in his veins. Dude oozes Main Character energy but NOPE, the player character is here and Alistair is playing second fiddle.
There's also Parvati in The Outer Worlds. She's got all the makings of a main character, plucky kid from a backwater colony forced into the role of galactic hero, but she's the sidekick because she's not the palyer character.
Like, its so funny. Its like those old (Y/N) fanfics where the main character is supplanted by this foreign parasite. Its just so endlessly funny to me.
Leave ones YOU know in the tags!

MC Who Has Undergone Extensive Physical Therapy
Once again, I’m on my bullshit because it’s ROUND TWO of the Physical Therapy Mambo, and now I’m just imagining characters of various properties interacting with an MC whose worldview on pain and movement are deeply tied to them having undergone extensive physical therapy.
The brand of physical therapy I’ve been undergoing for years now (This is because my body in recent months crashed and backslid A BUNCH), can be summarized by the following problem-solving list in order; - Move the body part - Does it hurt? Relax the body part. - Does it still hurt? Challenge your body’s limits by continuing to Move That Way - Rest - Repeat I should stress here that my physical therapy is because my body wonks up my pain signals, so I get pain c o n s t a n t l y. It’s so bad that when I get sucked into my pain vortex, it’ll slowly restrict my movement if I listen to the pain signals and stop moving as much to try to recover to make the pain stop. I gotta keep moving in spite of the pain, and stretching and pushing my limits, or I lose mobility. And that does some funny things to a person’s worldview. So I’m just imagining an MC who carries those kinds of lessons into their everyday stuff. I’m talking “PAIN IS JUST WEAKNESS LEAVING THE BODYYYY” type beat when they’re sore after an especially rough activity. I’m talking an MC who knows their limits and will sit down to relax plenty of times. They’re not blindly challenging theirself to their limit every moment of every day, they’re challenging theirself in calculated ways. They’re not a workout enthusiast, but they have to maintain some physical work. This is an MC that the self-care and self-improvement characters who love taking care of and improving themselves will admire for their personal strength and approach to personal care. This would be an MC that’s reknown for their pain tolerance. Years of chronic pain and having to deal with the extensive pain of physical therapy has made them unafraid of pain. Characters challenge them with pain and MC’s just like “That’s all?” which shakes the foundation of characters who’re known for being more threatening/tough. This is an MC that I imagine would be hard to deter from anything. They know they can and will rebuild and recover from anything thrown at them. They’re confident in theirself. Shy/meeker characters admire them and/or fear them for their tenacity. They’re intimidating with all that confidence when facing a threat. Scratches and burns and intimidating surface-level injuries wouldn’t really register to this MC. It’s pain, sure, but it’s not like it’s stopping them from being able to use that body part. Their “Unless it’s broken, I can keep going” and “Slap some first aid on that injury and I’ll keep going” mentality coming in full swing, unsettling everyone who then is like “MC FUCKIN’ CHILL-” Gentle and loving characters being like “Please, MC, FOR ME, chill for like a minute” The flipside of the coin would be... This would also be an MC who struggles with experiencing comfort/pleasure. Chronic pain/extensive years of painful physical therapy would have burnt out a lot of their associations to touch and physical interactions with the world. They’re numb to most everything. Feeling physical comfort/pleasure would be like coming home from a long war. Characters who specialize in creature comforts would find that MC is hard to please, but when they’re pleased, they melt like putty. Characters who love to be touchy would find MC is averse to most touch in the area of their physical therapy, but would also find that MC craves positive touch in those areas. Light, tickling sensations, massages, gentle, soft caresses. This MC would likely attract a lot of attention of someone who is capable and can weather any storm, but is equally as weathered by the storms they’ve lived through. Characters who’re softer would feel MC’s exhaustion, gently doting on them and giving them special attention and treats and little gifts. Characters who’re responsible would find MC to be admirable as well, but they’d also see a need to reassure this MC that they’re doing well enough. Likely even learning the statistics of back-sliding and reminding MC of how far they’ve come from when they began their journey. I imagine that the characters that tend to always have to do everything themselves would have a respect for this MC, seeing how hard they work day in and day out. Characters that tend to take care of others would feel a yearning to help MC put their feet up and rest, or relax after an especially rough day of physical therapy.

is it just me or did the winx paired with the WRONG group? Stella is all about herself and act all busy around in cloudtower and Musa looks like she doesn't care about Stella and since Musa can act very tough, it doesn't work so well with these 2 as a team Bloom is all into instinct and emotions while Tecna is all about logic, rational and a perfectionist, that really don't match well with each other, no wonder they argued a few times i don't know how to describe with Flora and Aisha, like yeah they don't fight but they're no better as a pair neither because Aisha is scared of the dark and that doesn't match well with Flora's personalities, they makes each other nervous and even more anxious this way, no offense to these 2 though my ideal pairs for each winx Flora and Tecna Bloom and Stella Musa and Aisha i don't know why but they can learn from each other and most of them have the opposite personalities so that makes more sense

I think it's so funny how no one is the slightest bit interested in Checo’s win today 🤣
Everybody is just like "uhhh wow look at how fast Charles was" and "uhhh wow look at how furious Max was and how he called Russel a dickhead and rightly so"
Everyone knows who the main characters of Formula One are ❤️ Lestappen all the way ❤️🏳️‍🌈🏎🏁

My political stance:
We should have to choose between the greater of two goods, not the lesser of two evils.
Having said that, Anarchy.
This is relevant because all the characters I write keep falling into government positions. I hate the (people in the US) government. Why do all my MCs end up in positions of power???

okay so like. every main character in a book ends up being bisexual coded and this is because the authors need to be very descriptive for their characters, including if they are attractive or not. this ends up (especially for male characters) making them comment on the attractiveness of the same sex (to give the readers some visuals) making them seem attracted to them.
personally, i think more authors should embrace this.
