Batfam Headcanons/Imagines/Rambles While I Eat

I like to imagine that when Bruce is out with Jason (or any of the kids tbh, I'm just thinking about Jason lol), he turns into my grandpa. In that he starts talking about the most random things from when he was younger.

Or like:

Just tells him random shit, and the most boring stuff he missed while he was dead like what businesses opened and closed. Then out of nowhere he hits him with something like "When I got into a car accident when I was younger-"

Bruce, parked in the grocery store parking lot: "Oh! Wait, look at these." *Reaches into his car's back seat and pulls out two mini propane tanks* "I just got these for 20$ a piece, and guess what? They're refillable. Most propane tanks I've seen aren't like that-" *Goes into a little ramble about mini gas stoves and cooking while the powers out*

Jason: *Awkwardly sitting in the passenger seat nodding along, but tbh he's actually sorta interested in the ramble*

Also, Bruce is totally an apocalypse dad, right? Like he buys ridiculous amounts of canned food and survival guides and tents and fire starters that he'll never use. This also applies to expensive stuff of course, cause he's a rich boi

Alfred: "Master Bruce, why exactly is there a boat in the Batcave?"

Bruce: "..It's the Bat-Boat. I thought it would help on aquatic missions."

*Literally never uses it ever, but refuses to let the kids use it either*

I'm all in for southern accent Bruce and wacky accent Dick, however I also propose:

•Jason who still has a Gotham street accent. Whenever he meets one of the street kids (Especially the older ones that have been out there for a while) and they have that thick street accent, he wants to pinch their cheeks. While some of the 'higher class' Gotham citizens might think of the accents as representing stupidity or filth, Jason adores the accent with his whole heart.

•Damian who mimics people he likes. We know that Damian can very accurately mimic peoples voices, but imagine if he likes being around someone he subconsciously starts to talk in their voice. It's a little creepy to people at first, hearing their voice (which depending on the person he's talking to is like, a deep, gruff, adult man voice lol) come out of this 13-14 year old kid, but you get used to it.

Damian, after talking to Jon for a few minutes: "So I wuz walkin' into tha trainin' room, and thare Tim wuz! Usin' MY katana! Can you believe that horseshit?! Absolutely ridiculus. How dare he! I wuz gonna knock sum semse inta him, but then faather came in and made me stop.."

Jon, a little concerned at Damian's lack of formal words and the way that they suddenly sound so similar, but kinda finding it cute: "Yeah, how dare he.."

(Jon has a southern accent, right? Cause he lives on a farm with Clark?)

Damian's favorite cartoon is the Wild Kratts, and Dick makes him watch Bluey because he feels like it helps Damian get out of the whole 'assassin' mindset and more into the 'child' mindset.

Also Tim never stopped the stalking, he still watches security footage and follows around people he likes. Bernard just got used to him suddenly popping up wherever he went-

Andrew and Neil watch Bluey.

No. They don't have children.

No. They aren't planning of having one anytime soon.

They just found it randomly one day and they sticked to Andrew's phone for HOURS watching all the episodes they could find. In the mean time Andrew somehow got chocolate milk and cookies for himself.

They do this at least once a week and it helped a lot in the bad days so now it's the confort show.

Bluey's episode "Surprise" and a discussion on the surprise

One of the first things I did when I woke up this morning was watch the Bluey episode "Surprise". I had three thoughts for most of it 1.) Yeah two kids and two different games is gonna get chaotic. 2.) I feel sorry for Bandit. All my man wanted to do was watch the race. Poor guy will definitely wake up tomorrow covered in bruises. 3.) This feels like a generic episode... why air it after "The Sign"? Like what makes it the better season finale. Then I got to the end.

Spoilers below the line

Adult Bluey. She looks great! I am not gonna lie though she maybe looks a little to young. Someone said she was older now because she has grey in her fur. Maybe I am just bad at guessing dog ages but I thought that was just texture to show her fur had gotten longer/thicker over time. I would have honestly believed that she was 18 and visiting home for the first time after going away to college.; particularly since Chili says Bingo is still at home. Then i remembered Bingo is hinted to have an intrest in the medical field/want to be a doctor, so maybe she stays at home longer to save money while working on her degree. But there is one thing to hint Bluey must actually be in her mid to late 20's at this point....

Her little child. Again I am not the best guess of the characters ages... I am going to guess this kid is around 5 based on them only being about a head smaller than Bluey was when she was 7 and played this trick on Bandit (also I just do not think you give a ball shooter to a toddler. Imagine Muffin with one).

The main topic surrounding this little pup right now seems to be who is the father. I understand the shippers want to know, But I am an adult viewer who really does not have that much interest in ships in a children's show. And there are other things I think people should be asking. First do we think this is Bluey's son or her daughter. They look a lot like Bluey, but also a lot different from her. Plus this show is pretty good at not necessarily making all the girls look exactly like their moms: both Bluey and Socks resemble their fathers and Bingo looks as much like her aunt as she does her mom. Other than that the dogs do not wear cloths and we do not hear a name or voice to help us guess. So really they could be either.

That drives me to my next point. I really want this pup to have a name. I definetly believe that Bluey's child would have a name that starts with "B" to carry on the little tradition from her childhood house. Since we do not know if they are a boy or a girl I have decided to christian them by the gender neutral animal name: "Bean". "Beanie" and "Little Bean" are affectionate names family members will call them. Their favorite breakfast food is biscuits with jelly, because then they will be asked "Jelly Bean?" which makes them laugh so hard they almost roll off their chair

here is a picture of Bluey's child ("Bean") , that I took off the official wiki, without the toy gear.

They have less jet black fur and more purple/dark blue than it originally looked like they did when they were wearing the toy. Personally I think they look like a blue/grey version of Brandy. Genetics are fun. It is much harder to say looking at this picture if they are a Blue Heeler/Border Collie mix or a Blue Heeler/ Black lab mix. Wiki says this is on purpose as both mixed breed dogs can look fairly alike and that the pup has traits that could come from either Bluey's friend Mackenzie or her Friend Jean Luc. So you heard it here. The creators intentionally left the breed/father of this pup ambiguous, and you are not wrong for believing either one of them is Bluey's husband/ the father.

a/n: simon and reader have 4 kids, twin son and daughter (4), a nonbinary teen (15) and a son (17), none of them are referred to with actual names except for the nonbinary child whose name is 'bug' (there is lore behind this i came up with while writing this if anyone wants a little fic extending on how bug chose their name), simon and the reader have been together for 18 years. i actually have no idea how old ghost is even supposed to be, i just headcanon him in his mid 30's but for this specific au he'll be 40 on the dot, reader is meant to be 38-40.

"are we there yet?" you hear the whine of your four year old son come from his car seat behind you. it wasn't hard to tell the poor guy was getting restless and impatient,

"just 20 more minutes bud, keep watching bluey with your sister." your husband, simon responds to the squirrely child before you can speak up. you flash him a sweet smile and look over your shoulder to glimpse back at your children.

you were currently on a roadtrip up to scotland to visit one of simon's military friends and vacation at the beach with your family. you found it a little funny that on his break from work simon was so happy and eager about going to see one of his coworkers, but it warmed your heart to know he had such close friends especially in people he had to work with, people who he literally trusted with his life.

"how're you all holding up?" you ask the four with a sweet smile.

"good." your eldest son mumbles, not moving his attention from his phone, texting his friends.

"how about you my little bug?" you turn your attention to your 15 year old.

"i'm good mama, just playing a word search game." they replied, turning their phone to show you the progress of their game.

"nice, you're doing great. i didn't even realize that fritz was a real word."

it was just under another 20 minutes when you pulled into the driveway of simon's friend's, johnny, house. it was s beautiful, quaint thing, the ocean a few hundred feet away behind the home. as you unbuckled your seatbelt you saw the man appear from his home, holding his arms out with a loud chuckle for simon as your husband stepped out of the vehicle.

you smiled to yourself as you got out of the car, watching your husband embrace his friend gruffly as you removed your four year old daughter from her car seat. "hello darling, we're here now." you say gently to the child, who is just awakening from the nap she decided to take in the car.

bug removed your four your old son from his seat for you, holding the boy in their arms as you thank them and give their head a pat with your free hand.

you and the four children approach your husband and his friend, offering the scott a sweet smile. "it's good to see you again johnny."

"you to mrs. riley, kiddos."

"hi uncle johnny." the kids replied.

"why don't the four of you go and play on the beach? it's a private beach and there's not too many others out on it today." soap suggests to the kids with a smile, thumbing over his shoulder to point towards the beach.

it was a couple hours later, you were sat on a beach chair under an umbrella watching simon in the water with your daughter, hearing the four year old's loud and excited giggling made your heart swell. your eldest son and 15 year old playing water volleyball against johnny as your youngest son rested in your arms, tired of playing in the water and just wanting to be cuddled by his mother.

your heart felt full as you watched the scene in front of you, this vacation was well needed for everyone, your two older kids having worked incredibly hard on their schooling and grades, simon having worked hard at work as he always does. and being four is harder than it may seem, the twins needed this break just as much as everyone else.

and of course yourself, you had worked hard at home, taking care of the kids, the housework, and so much more. with and without simon, you worked hard and deserved the break too. it was nice to finally get the time to do something fun like this together as a family. you wouldn't trade it for the world.

How to Make it Through to the End of the School Year

I myself am pushing through to the end of my spring semester (gotta make it to finals week 😅) and it's rough, for sure. I'm rounding out my junior year of college and it's quickly hitting me that after this, I'll only have one more year left of school (as of right now).

I know I listed in the bio of this blog that there would be advice/study tips and while I am no expert, I can speak from my experience and what has worked for me. DIsclaimer: everyone is different and what I may or may not list here is not a cure-all for everyone, this is just how I stay productive and efficient.

Taking breaks! - I struggle a lot with recognizing my limits and taking healthy breaks so I can work best. Recently, a friend and I have been having outside study times ("picnics") where we sit and do some work and/or color. One evening, we even made chai lattes on the lawn to have while we colored. Personally, I love simple coloring books (like Disney, but I'm currently working in a Bluey book). Also, this past weekend, I made time in between my textbook readings to rewatch a favorite movie of mine, Ella Enchanted. I haven't taken the proper time to watch TV in a while, so it was a nice change of pace.

Properly eating and hydrating - This is also something I struggle with. I understand how easy it is to get hyperfocused and forget about food in the midst of studying. I am thankful to have a girlfriend who will check in on me when she can to make sure my water bottle is filled if I have been busy throughout the day, but I have also set an alarm on my laptop to ding every 20 minutes. I'm using the Google Chrome extension "Water Reminder", which has been super helpful for me! It's not super cutesy and aesthetic like other Chrome extensions, but I like the simple ding that reminds me to drink water in case I haven't in a while. Hearing a reminder to drink water also allows me to check in with myself to see how I'm feeling in terms of hunger. I try to schedule meals times specifically for myself so that I can remember to eat. Some people are really great about intuitive eating, but I am unfortunately not one of those people. Keeping track of the time and keeping meals times at 7:30 - 8:00 am (breakfast), 11:00 am - 12:00 pm (lunch), and 5:00 pm (dinner/supper), I find it easier to keep up with eating so that I can stay healthy and nourished.

Studying - probably a more obvious "tip", but with my own addition. I like to romanticize the idea of studying. I use specifically colored pens, marker, and highlighters to make each of my notes in class and outside of class to keep myself focused. I love things that are artsy and colorful, so using lots of colors keeps my attention on the material.

Self care - I love face masks, body lotion, and moisturizers. I can't afford the super expensive skincare that you see on TIkTok and Instagram, but I have found some products that work well for me. I like the non abrasive Neutrogena face wash, Nivea body lotion (with shea butter - this also helped heal my tattoos!), and peach slices acne patches (my current lifesavers). Freeman is a brand that makes some really good face masks that have worked for my somewhat senstiive skin and they have a good variety so that you can find what you may be looking for you. They're an inexpensive brand (I think) that works pretty well. Even my sister who is into cosmetology and skincare and knows all the nitty gritty details about what ingredients are good recommended the brand to me so I definitely love to use those when I can (no more than twice a week, though; no need to wear down my face)

Get a study buddy - if you're like me and you find it easier to be productive with another body around, see if you can find someone to study with you or to at least hang around you while you work. As I saif before, a friend and I have been having little picnics outside in the nice weather to work, but I have also met up with others in a library space or a study room to keep myself prodcutive. Some days, I am really productive on my own and in my room, but other days, I really need a change of scenery. Being outside of the space where my lovely bed is and having someone else bear witness to how productive or not I am being is certainly a motivator.

I may discover new habits that can help me as I progress through the next month, but as of right now, these are the main things that are helping me.

I really do feel for today's young people feeling like they can't go out anywhere without getting into trouble or feeling like they aren't welcome.

I followed a nature path from a park behind some apartments that ended and let out into the building's parking lot. 'I was watching some birds through my binoculars (facing well away from the building and the cars mind you) and an old lady yelled at me that I was on private property.

I just held up my binoculars and said I'm bird watching over there, I'm not doing anything wrong. She grumbled and repeated herself, shutting the window.

And look, as someone who's had my car prowled I get being cautious people near my car but I was:

A: facing the nature preserve area with big ol binoculars in hand.

B: like 20 ft off the public nature path and maybe 30 ft from a public sidewalk

and most importantly

C: Dressed like Bluey hunted and skinned a piñata. Bright teal pants, bright teal shirt, rainbow alpaca hoodie.

I always were BRIGHT NOTICEABLE clothes when I go out birding so folks see me for one thing, and also so they don't think I'm skulking.

But yeah, I kinda get why a lot of younger folks feel trapped inside. I had to cross this parking lot to get back to the sidewalk from the end of the nature path REGARDLESS if I was bird watching or not.

Would I have still been yelled at if I was jogging, biking, walking a dog? Who knows.

Its pretty sad that the first things some neighbors do is sus you out as a threat when you're not. Especially when you try to project that you're not.

I've had plenty of other neighbors lean out and ask what I'm looking at or if I've seen anything good, and then we chat for a bit. Those are the ones I still wave to when they see me pass around their buildings near the park now.

And for the folks who are wary of the unknown person frequenting their area, you can still call out to them 'see anything good, what are you looking at, how's it going?' is still received as 'we see you, we notice you' without being aggressive and accusatory. If the person seems cagey they'll probably stop chatting and try and leave.

But yeah, apart from mood killer old lady today I saw some good stuff: snow geese, varied thrush, wrens, northern shovelers and a Mystery Duck.

Currently Watching: veep with my husband. i got a little stalled on the whole 911 thing but i'm still very slowly working on that. but also really, encanto for the 20 millionth time. toy story for the 70 millionth. daniel tiger is currently on the tv (i miss you bluey...). thomas the tank engine (og only, i'm sorry, i hate to sound all ~back in my day~ but the problem with modern day thomas incarnations is that those trains are too fucking nice to each other. it's awful.)

Currently Reading: in dc comics specifically i'm making my way through batman: death and the maidens. but i also have several manhwas i follow. and the last book it looks like i was reading was "those who work, those who don't: poverty, morality, and family in rural america" but i really have so little time to actually sit and read lately so comics it is lmao

Current Obsession: would be dc comics i guess? even then i hesistate to call it an actual obsession lmao. i talk about it on tumblr a lot but it actually takes up so little of my actual day and thoughts. currently replaying dragon quest 7.

Day 13: Friday January 13, 2023 - “He Just Needs Love”

My current hobby: learning all I can about how to have really exceptional Dad days with a busy toddler.  From wake up to bedtime, being mindful every step of the way, stacking one piece at a time.  Audrie wants to put a beautiful spin on it that makes it seem so simple - and maybe thats why she’s such an effective Mom. “play, eat, change diaper, repeat. As for me, Ive got to work a lot harder!  Where I am not a natural, I need to be skillful.  I’ve learned the importance of having a plan, and staying a step ahead, having distractions in my back pocket ready for when things get sideways on me.  Its a big responsibility and I can’t just wing it.  I got him.

Today, after only about 4 hours of sleep, we were up and watching some Bluey.  Until 9am when I had to get on a work call. I got the butter noodles and Signing Time queued up to help me out so I could juggle both. It worked, enough = Win.   I got him down for morning nap after a little struggle - no Mom milk available buddy, going to have to do this right or risk not getting that break at all!  Got the right combo of songs, and toys, and cuddles and he was out at 10:45.   

Time to hustle now.  I figured I had 20 to 60 minutes to be productive and I used it to clean and reset the house...nothing is more helpful to my mental health on these days than that.  Clean slate.  Time to breathe and clean up the chaos. When he wakes up, we’ll have our fresh start.   We’ll have gotten over the biggest hurdle - the “Thursday night / Friday morning tornado.”  Ready to start over.  

At one hour, on the dot, he started quaking from his bed.  I quickly scooped him up, bopped him across the house, and settled into our bed.  I figured Id lay and cuddle him, extend his nap, and take as much bonus rest as we could get.   He laid there with me, drooling on my shoulder, for another 75 minutes.   Big win!!!   Day=shortened.  Win. 

Just after 1 and I had to listen in on another work call - A+++ for whomever invented the bluetooth headset.  I have to imagine it was for working Dads and moments like these as I chased and entertained William all through the house and even outside while multi-tasking....where we both enjoyed how nice and warm that sunny sky felt!

As soon as my call was over, the next step of my plan was ready to go.  Lets go back get outside!    Drove down to the Zoo for our first visit to the giraffes in 2023.  Lots of other people to watch as we made our way around to see the Peacocks, the Rhino, an elephant, meerkats, Lemur, the flamingos, the lion, and even the big bear up close!   William, in his cute little romper, was happy to say hello and wave at everyone.  Happy boy.  Daddy was doing good work.   And I was ready for my reward.  Zoo Fries.  Yum!  Win for us both!

Great time to facetime in with Mama (who was settled into New York City for the rest of the day) - check in time=check.   Good for mama’s heart to see her happy baby boy mow down some ketchup and ice.   But this is where my planning was important.  Knowing he had that late nap, I knew Id need to do more to run out some energy and not just drive home.  So we walked Reid Park, and saw the ducks, visited a playground (he had little interest today). I could see the ball fields were busy and William noticed to.   All week, William has been pretty obsessed with his baseball and we wondered if he connected his “baseball” (a special one from Cooperstown) with the sport he hasn’t seen on TV for a few months....and then he answered it as he stood in his stroller, pointed at the fields off in the distance - “baseball!” I guess he does know.   So we wandered around the outfield fence trying to learn the way to the diamonds next to Hi Corbett Field where the UofA plays.  Covered some ground together finding our way around this place.  Should be spending more time here! What awesome soft green grass!  We found our way in, under a beautiful sunsetty sky and found 3 different travel high school games being played between the Tucson teams and a team from Washington state.   Very cool.   We stayed for over an hour watching the games (a long time for a Toddler!). Win again!  

I pushed William right up behind the dugouts so he could get a close up view of the boys, and hear the sounds of the game and the coaching and the cheering.  He loved it. “Baseball” became the word of the rest of the day, and as soon as we got home, thats what he wanted to find.  He definitely connected the dots.   And for me it was fun too, to think about coming out here to watch more baseball this Spring -”I should look up the UofA schedule!”  I looked affectionately at the other baseball Dads there keeping track of the runs and the pitch counts.  I let him play in that great grass and he took advantage of that time to tackle me over and over and over....burn that energy buddy.  It was my favorite part of the day. 

We strolled our way back to the car, and started the commute home, and he was asleep in his car seat before we were out of the complex. I watched in the rearview mirror as his head started to bob, glad I was able to push that out to get it logged as a really solid sleep. Successful Afternoon Nap= Check.  

Whats next?  Home stretch! But my work isn’t done yet.  If I could get through the next 2.5 hours Id have a successful Dad day.  Had the quiet drive home to vision it out and reset again. Groceries, dinner, Spartans Basketball, bath and bed.  Lets have fun with this last little bit and get to the finish line!  Engage play and enjoy.  The secret weapon?  Butter and Noodles.  Take me home Noo Noos.

Before we knew it, he was fed, bathed and ready for a baba.  I whipped up a good combo that include butter and heavy cream, and he drank that right down as we looked at the Trucks book and read Booby Moon together as we talked about wanting to get some good sleep tonight.  It wasn’t the easiest goodnight.  Every time I put him down he was right back up like he hadn’t been out cold moments before! He’s been doing that a lot the past week for both of us, but I stayed calm and patient.  “You having trouble going to sleep?” I asked.  “yass” he answered.  “Its ok, Im here with you, for as long as you need. And even when I step out, I’ll come right back if you call me.  We’ll do this together.”   I bopped him to the finisher song, I’ll Be Around, and laid him down quietly.  He held still. I think I got him this time. ...  waaaiiittt.....  He quietly whimpered “mama” then “night night” - deep sigh, and that was it. Id made it to the end.  Check.  Win!

Donald Miller writes about a “good story” having a very simple formula:  A character that wants something and overcomes conflict to get it.  My fatherhood story here hasn’t been easy or natural. We’ve had some bumps.  But here we are, the story still being written.   I haven’t just left it at “this is impossible” - that wouldn’t be a very good story at all, for anyone; most of all William.   So as the plot takes shape, Ive had to work harder at it and these weekends on my own are the inciting incident(s).  As each Thursday night rolls around, its time to accept the invite again.  If I am going to have good days. - happy days - successful days, like today, its going to take a lot of effort. And I am sure as soon as I have it figured out, I’ll have to figure it out again.  I got great advice from Deni (Grammee) last week after the Friday morning tornado wiped me out;  “don’t get frustrated, just try something different.”  It takes a plan that is flexible enough to shake with his frenetic pace, and time to think of new and different things.  It takes more than just saying “that didn’t work” - but instead “what am I going to do if this doesn’t work?” - its not enough for me to know the play, its about “whats the next play?”  

Each weekend, I learn a little more and add some more skill. And the most important skill, is the importance of sequencing.  Its not enough to hope for an easy good night but what do I need to do from A to B in order to set him up to have an easy goodnight.   Audrie, in her love for both of us, simplified it down to “he just needs love.”  Sounds easy enough.  But knowing how I am going to deliver that love step by step through the day to keep up the positive momentum, thats the real game.  Before she left yesterday, we started something that I asked be a part of our weekly routine.  The pep talk.   We vision cast each of the days until she was back, including “what do you want for dinner Sunday night?”  We talked about whats been working recently and maybe what some new ideas are for play and for food.  I am not good enough at this to just be able to run out the clock, and take it easy.  At least not yet.  Maybe one of these weekends in 2023 I’ll put together the perfect weekend, and get through from start to finish without even so much of a raised blood pressure.  Im not there yet, but I am getting there.  Days like today make me believe that I am on my way.  And who knows, maybe when I am done putting together this great story, I will be apply everything Ive learned to my own every day life and then we can laugh about the cliche, “who was teaching who?”

Well mostly YouTube and social media, so technically this is my hobby XD.

I guess audio editing?? Atm I’m making a Nogizaka46 karaoke but I had to shorten it first so I guess that’s a skill? XD.

Strengths: I don’t like complimenting myself omg I guess I don’t let things get to me?? Like ‘nasty comments with Zakuro’ that started on my first hate comment and we all know how I just laughed at that XD.

Weaknesses: I have SERIOUS anger issues. Like, when I say I have impulsive anger people think I’m just playing it up, no honestly I am known to throw things, break things, slam things, do not let me hold anything expensive when I’m frustrated cos it will break. I get it from my Dad but I legit think I’m worse than him XD. Oh also fyi I’ve done this before if I’m being harsh to you about seemingly nothing PLEASE TELL ME cos I don’t know I’m doing it oops.

I would be typical and say my Myu merch, but it’s my Yoshi cuddly I got from Camelot Theme Park about 10 years ago. I truly am a Baby Spice at heart XD.

I do boss ass scrambled eggs. And I’m also great at roast potatoes, I can get them crispy but not hard but soft on the inside. I roast them in a small cake tin it works AMAZINGLY.

After 2017 I really like how they’re trying different things rather than sticking to conventional normal cast musicals. Like NogiMyu is so experimental and has a Nogi cast, the Super Live is a dance show, I hope Kaguya-hime no Koibito will be similar to this pattern XD.

21. Which cast member catches your attention the most at the moment?

Well it’s ALWAYS Nao, but y’all know how much I’m loving Hinachima atm.

FOUR / height: UMMMMM LAST I CHECKED (and that was a long time ago), 153cm???

FIVE / hobbies: reading, first and foremost. creative writing is next, and drawing? or sketching, because it’s been a long time since i’ve gone beyond pencil scribbles in my various sketchbooks. i also love to bake, and owning a stand mixer is my dream.

(does window-shopping count as a hobby because i could structure a whole day around just wandering through malls and shops just doing that without spending a single penny. it’s fun! particularly if you’re in good company.)

SIX / favourite colour: blue is nice. i like blues.

SEVEN / favourite book: the honest answer is that it’s very hard to choose favourites, my taste in books vary depending on the time and some things i used to be utterly convinced were faves end up being...alright...at a later date?  the last two years i’ve been steadily immersing myself into a lot of SF/F and i tend to adore all of them as a result of getting those reads from woc reviewers.*

in the meantime, here’s my current faves that come to mind without hesitation and with little doubt in hindsight: (literary fiction) frankenstein by mary shelley, never let me go by kazuo ishiguro, (fantasy) the tiger’s daughter by k. arsenault rivera, (sci-fi) the long way to a small angry planet by becky chambers, and finally (fantasy/mythology?) the song of achilles by madeline miller.

*if you’re a queer poc like me who’s gotten a bit picky and cynical about mainstream publishing over the years (partly due to being spoiled by wonderfully written and equally wonderfully free fanfic), woc reviewers usually have the best recommendations.

NINE / last film I watched: rocketman. it was awesome! 

TEN / inspiration or muse: there’s some writing out there that just gets those creativity gears running. the kind of writing where you just wanna absorb via osmosis or something because just reading it with my own two eyes isn’t enough. i’m not even saying like good stories kind of writing (although that’s definitely one form of inspiration), i mean like writing style. the turns of phrases that stick to you, choice words that make you feel a great number of things, clever syntax that has you coming back. you could drink it all up.

don’t @ me for saying this: i know there’s a lot of stuff worth critiquing over with john green’s novels, it definitely isn’t for everyone and i totally respect that because i see all the flaws in his books as well, but his writing style is something i quite unabashedly enjoy, for example, because of how dry and direct it is. (which makes me wonder that not nearly enough White Men are dry AND direct: they’re all dry and.....insufferably and intolerably long-winded.) and then there’s madeline miller, k. arsenault rivera, and naomi novik -- fantasy writers that have very atmospheric writing, the kind where you feel the beat of some unsung song in the way their story is told. they’re also my go-tos for when i feel the creative well is all dried up.

TWELVE / meaning behind your URL: i used to refer to myself as “bluey” Back In The Day (which is another long story that involves warrior cats), and i had an online friend who lived in japan that nicknamed me “brew” because it was how she pronounced “blue” in her head. the nickname caught on in the community i was in, and i grew quite fond of it myself; figured it was time for a change after a while and went with some combination involving “brew” thereafter with my social media handles (sans my instagram). the “-cha”....well...tea, anyone?

THIRTEEN / top 3 ships: aziraphale/crowley from good omens, chirrut/baze from rogue one, aaand peraltiago from brooklyn nine-nine. some variation of Married™ and two halves of a whole idiot.

FOURTEEN / lipstick or lip balm: lip balm. i do like seeing lipstick on other people more because other people wear lipstick better than i can.

FIFTEEN / currently reading: red, white, and royal blue by casey mcquiston. sign me the heck up for gay ass hate-to-love.

SIXTEEN / work: i’m an english teacher, but i am self-employed on an official capacity since i’m hired through an agency. i have yet to land a permanent job, though i’m starting a masters in creative writing in september. we’ll see how things go.

SEVENTEEN / fiction: most of the things i’ve written for public/semi-public consumption (i.e. submitted as an assignment/project, had it published in a collection, etc) have been just about....people? people as people and people interacting. my most notable(??) piece is a short-short story about a 20-something gay woman’s relationship with her single father, who is also gay and has been in love with his childhood friend the whole time. it’s not a tense story, the father-daughter relationship is a good, strong one; just one where the daughter reflects on Life as she considers coming out to her dad, when it turns out he wants to come out to her too because he’s so inspired by her. i wrote it for a short story class, and imagine how gratified i felt when all my classmates in the workshop kept asking me if the dad + childhood friend get married later!!

but i’ve also done a lot of SF/F in my spare time, some projects i’m experimenting with. there’s one about a girl and a sword from space, there’s another that might as well be good omens fanfic since the characters involved are very aziraphale- and crowley-like, and there’s one completely suuuuper self-indulgent thing involving superheroes. just a lot of stuff i’m exploring and figuring out!

EIGHTEEN / fanfiction: I HAVEN’T WRITTEN FANFICTION IN SO LONG. the last thing i wrote and uploaded was a short chirrut/baze thing. they were played by chinese actors, one of whom’s from hong kong where i live, so it was an au where they (particularly chirrut) grew up in hk. the most fanfic i’ve ever written was during my free! and haikyuu!! days...those were some awesome days not gonna lie.

would love to write good omens fanfic, considering how obsessed i am with it, but there’s something ineffable about them that makes me hesitant to even attempt nailing down their characters in my own writing. like i’m not even worthy of the multitudes they contain. i’ve enjoyed all the fanfic that’s been pouring out of the fandom lately, however. i love me some sweet, sweet tropes.

(remember that project in #17 where the characters are very aziraphale- and crowley-like? sometimes i look at the shorts i’ve written for those ocs, the slice-of-life type of shorts where i’m just playing around with dialogue instead of plot, and think to myself “with some name-changes and tweaking this could be GO fanfic. why not??? WHY NOT????”)

65) Lips or eyes: Eyes, they tell you so much about a person and they’re really pretty to look at.

66) Shorter or taller: Depends on what for. For friendship I’ll say shorter because I’m used to that. For a romantic relationship I’ll say taller, but not by much, probably because of relationship stereotypes. I think I’m slightly traditional in terms of romantic attachments.

67) Older or younger: I don’t care about age specifically, but I internally believe in the stereotype that older people are more mature so might go for someone older for relationship on that basis. I focus on personality more that age.

68) Romantic or spontaneous: I really don’t know, I want a connection with my partner so I don’t really care about romantic gestures.
