the sacred 28 is peak jkr tbh. We learn nothing about progress or how things changed for halfbloods, muggleborns, squibs, etc, but years after the series ends we get more pureblood focus, like why did this even need to exist beyond her racism huh?

Sorry anon, I don't know if you were expecting solidarity or agreement from me, but I...don't really have any to offer.

...Really? We're going to presume she's a blood purist in her real life politics because she added a bit of in-universe world-building to her cash cow like, ten years ago? (I mean...she might be, but this isn't proof.) It is not surprising that the Pureblood Directory exists. Nor is it proof of anything. I actually think it's kind of neat. I like that we don't know who wrote it. That it has inconsistencies and flaws. I am not remotely surprised that such a piece was published in this world. And I'm not going to assume anything about the author based on this update because...honestly, that's nuts.

Trying to guess a writer's real life politics based on the nuances they include in the sub-creationist fantasy world they craft is...a losing game.

I don't know why the fandom feels the need to keep doing this. Not saying this is you, anon (though you kind of give that impression) but some of the HP fans (or "former fans" if you like) are fixated on dissecting the book and trying to find traces of the person Rowling is now in a narrative she wrote twenty years ago. You guys really don't need to keep inventing new reasons to hate her when there's perfectly good transphobia already out in the open. Transphobia that she keeps doubling down on.

Gotta be honest...I don't think this is helping. Criticize her for her actual bigotry and the damage she's causing, sure. But people will choose to focus on the books "supporting slavery" through the House Elves or featuring a "trans stereotype" with Rita Skeeter...all of it feels like people are reaching. No, the series isn't homophobic just because Dumbledore's sexuality could have been handled better. It isn't racist just because Cho Chang has two last names. (This is just a side note but she's not explicitly Chinese...or even explicitly Asian. They never confirm her race in the text. I mean, it's pretty clear that she is, I'm just saying.)

We don't need to waste time on this stuff. Rowling is actually hurting people with bigotry that she actually believes in. Let's focus on that instead of trying to piece together a dossier about how she was "always" awful. I honestly don't think that's the case, but it doesn't matter anyway. When I see posts like these, it frankly just comes across as people who have been burned by Rowling trying to "ruin" Harry Potter for the allies who still feel a connection to the series...if so, that's not going to work, and there are productive things you can do. Follow Daniel Radcliffe's example, he is slaying as a human being.

Hi GT! I love Lionheart most ardently - it is truly one of my favorite stories (in general, not just fanfiction).

One thing that really impresses me is your ability to make the personality, depth, and voice of every character shine, far beyond just the core four of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Draco. Two questions for you - one, which supporting character has been the most fun for you to write? And two, are there any characters that you especially wish had gotten more character depth or "screen time" in canon? Thanks!

Taking the core four off the board, Theo and/or Pansy have been the most fun to write, because they're so deliciously nasty. After a lot of scenes in Gryffindor, which is a warm, cozy, everyone-knows-your-name kind of place, Slytherin is a splash of cold water. Teddy and Pans in particular are tangled up in the kinds of toxic oddball dynamics you get when you take a bunch of emotionally repressed children, give them more money than God, and tell them they can't trust anyone but each other. Also, they deliberately talk like they're in a novel, because they're pretentious, and that's fun.

Characters that I wish had more time in canon: my kingdom for a scrap of information about Narcissa. Some lore, some dialogue, some narrative anything from Narcissa. Because if you just lay it out in bullet points, her life is the most fucked-up insane series of catastrophic fall-of-the-Roman-Empire type disasters — like, her (canonical) timeline currently goes, in chronological order:

Sister elopes and gets disinherited

Cousin runs away and gets disinherited

Other sister joins a cult

Other cousin also joins a cult

Husband joins a cult (timeline unclear, possibly predates your sister and/or cousin)

Other cousin goes missing, presumed dead(??)

Disinherited cousin is arrested for betraying his best friend to your cult leader and killing ten muggles (even though the muggle-killing was what he got all pissy about in the first place?)

Disinherited cousin's dead best friend's kid kills your cult leader on accident.

Your husband is arrested and tried for trying to overthrow his government (which he did) but they acquit him because you guys are rich. Your sister (also rich(?)) goes to prison though

Your husband unleashes a string of murders at the school your only son attends by smuggling a Dark artifact bequeathed to him by your dead cult leader to an eleven-year-old girl

Harry Potter frees your house-elf by tricking your beautiful idiot husband into punting a twelve-year-old's sock at it

Disinherited cousin breaks out of jail, tries to kill(?) Harry Potter

Your cult leader comes back from the dead

Your cult sister breaks out of jail to join her resurrected cult leader and moves into your house

Your son joins the cult and tries to kill his school principal. You make a suicide pact with his chemistry professor to help him out. Your son appears to succeed; everyone is still in your house for some reason.

Cult leader kills Harry Potter, Notoriously Unkillable Guy, and doesn't check the body himself. Maybe has bad knees or something? Unclear. Anyway, kid's not dead, so you lie to your immortal cult leader because you're sick of having all these people in your fucking house.

But hey, I'm glad the books made time for us to meet Ted Tonks.

I have a panel I'm trying to plan for an upcoming con and I figured there's no better place than tumblr to ask for help with it

The premise is basically just a kahoot game that asks questions about older fandoms, be it insane plot beats in the story (a la ICP becoming the first dual presidents of the United States and Guy Fieri being the antichrist in Homestuck) or insane fandom drama (such as the time a klance shipper tried to blackmail the voltron writers into making it canon, the rainbow dash cum jar, the sharpie bath, etc)

The problem is, I was never super involved in older fandoms (because I was a child who didn't know fandoms existed yet lol) and am therefore somewhat uninformed and my list of potential questions is very much incomplete for a 50 minute kahoot game

If anyone could send me asks or DMs with ideas for questions or even just ramble about topics I could include, I'd be really grateful for the help!

Based off one of your podcast episodes where you think Dumbledore killed Flamel, do you think Dumbledore would kill any wizard who found out different methods to being immortal?

Anon's referring to an @rankheresy episode by me and @therealvinelle (specifically this one)

TL;DL: @therealvinelle and I concluded that Dumbledore had killed Flamel before the events of Philosopher's Stone.

The thing is, that wasn't why we theorized Dumbledore killed him.

Dumbledore and Mortality

First, a bit about Dumbledore and death.

Dumbledore has some major hangups on death. To be fair, we all do, but Albus especially seems to in part because he seems to have obsessed over it in his youth as well as at his canonical age.

We know he chased after immortality as a young man and this concept of Master of Death. We know that upon gaining the cloak from the Potters, as well as the ring, he did get weird about it. Mostly, though, it's how he talks about death.

Dumbledore's often reiterating that death is a natural occurrance, which yes it is, but he romanticizes it. Death is the next great adventure, death is like going to sleep after a long hard day's work, it's a rest, a new path, and something we should look forward to when our time comes. And true, he's saying this to a child and of course sugar-coating things, and he's trying to explain why Tom's obsession with death and his horcruxes are unnatural, but it's still very strange things to say.

And the feeling I get, at least, is that Dumbledore is trying to convince himself that he's okay with death. Especially in book six where his mortality is catching up with him, he has much to prepare, and yet he's not quite prepared for when the end catches up to him despite himself.

This is a guy who thinks about death a lot and why he's no doubt convinced himself that Flamel, who he views as a good man, was totally okay with him and his wife dying after he's been not dying for several centuries because Dumbledore swears a Dark Lord who's been dead for ten years is after the stone.

But Dumbledore doesn't seem to view Flamel with contempt in Philosopher's Stone, or even all that misguided, just someone who after a long life had realized it was finally time and accepted it gracefully because the stone was very nearly stolen thanks to Dumbledore's bizarre obstacle course he set up in the basement of his school.

(This is where @therealvinelle and I come in, because we call foul on Flamel rolling over to die that easily when there have surely been thieves in the past, or letting Dumbledore do any of Philosopher's Stone without any intervention whatsoever and then supposedly quietly dying while Harry's passed out and agreeing to smash the stone after all that work to protect it.)

What Dumbledore is Not

Dumbledore clearly views Tom as bad in not accepting mortality, in murdering others to ensure his own immortality (rightly so, that's a very bad thing to do, as is splitting your soul apart even if it didn't require murder) but, and as weird as it is for me to defend Dumbledore, he's not itching at the bit to destroy Tom for that alone. That's just a facet to him of why Tom has gone too far and is unsalvageable and must be destroyed. It's a character flaw to Dumbledore, but one of many and not the main issue for all he brings it up quite often.

Dumbledore never gives off vibes of getting rid of or killing anyone who ever looks into immortality. Flamel, if @therealvinelle and I are correct, was left alone for many years when Dumbledore was personally acquainted with him and his wife until 1991. If there's other people who have similar immortality granting things, then we at least don't hear about them canonically.

Depending who they are, Dumbledore might view them as misguided, fearful, or else hold them in contempt but he's not a serial killer who's planning to hunt down people and murder them for doing things he doesn't like.

But the short answer is no, I don't think Dumbledore would do that.

I've read some brilliant fics where Hob achieves minor godhood. Thus giving him the OK as future spouse material for Dream. But if anyone wants a different take... Bear with me....

In Northern England (where I'm from) a Hob is "a kind, if somewhat mischievous household spirit, helpful to people in need. They'd attach themselves to remote farms, doing jobs around the house and farm while the family slept. Only asking for food as compensation. They weren't tied to a particular place and came and went as they chose. The usual way to dispose of a hob was to give them a set of new clothing, the receiving of which would make the creature leave forever. One of the most famous hobs is Robin Goodfellow. Hob being short form for the name Robin or Robert."

Ironically the first mention of Robin Goodfellow by name is possibly found in the Paston Letter of (1489). 👀 He was often mentioned in Reginald Scot’s Discoverie of Witchcraft, first published in 1588.

You can't help feeling this is such a Hob thing. Since he discovered he was immortal, he's being going round, giving a hand to families in need on the sly. And the legend of Hob/Robert/Robin the Goodfellow starts to build. It's a title/ folk tale he's aware of and quietly proud of. Then along comes our friend Shakespeare in the late 1590s and steals the name to give to the fey Puck in a Midsummer Nights Dream. (Another reason for Hob to really, really not like the guy).

The belief in Hobs was at its peak by the 1700s. So do you think down on his luck 17th century Hob was going from one remote house to another. Taking shelter and in return, helping with chores while the families slept. Which in turn led them to leave food out for the 'Hob' spirit. And the legend builds. Sometimes they'd leave clothes out and he'd move on, knowing he'd stayed too long.

By the time 2022 rolls around, every belief that's stemmed from Robin Goodfellow, Hobs, Hobgoblins, Hobbits, even House eleves from Harry Potter have slowly elevated him to a rural/folk God. And have also given him a weird connection to bloody Puck. Thanks very much Shaxberg!

“Okay, orphan girl, let’s see you pass this test.”

“Okay, Riddle-Me-This, I’ll kick your ass at it.”

“Sure you will.”

Year Two

“Your last name is Riddle… isn’t it?” Y/n asked, looking around the Chamber of Secrets.

“It’s not what you think.” Mattheo said quickly.

She eyed the man behind him. “That’s Tom Marvelo Riddle… and you’re- you’re Mattheo Marvelo Riddle. So what is he?”

“I am Tom Marvelo Riddle.” Tom said irritably. “Voldemort is my past, present, and future.”

She eyed him. “You’re definitely attractive, Tom, but this weird voodoo shit is the type of witchcraft I am not studying.”

He rolled his eyes. “Son, kill her.”

“See? You heard that, Mattheo? Daddy Tom just called you son! You can’t tell me it’s not what I think now.” Y/n said angrily.

Mattheo gave her a pleasing look. “I’m telling you it’s not what it looks like.”

“But it is.” Tom said.

Y/n looked at him. “We’re having a conversation, and for some really old guy who wants, like, immortality or something, you’re not that wise. Like, clearly you’re being rude.”

“I don’t care! Son, kill her!” Tom yelled.

Mattheo turned to Tom. “I won’t. She can be resourceful to us. She’s Y/n Potter. Please, father. We’re friends. She’s a Slytherin. She speaks Parceltongue.”

Tom looked at Y/n suspiciously. “Speak then, girl.”

“What the bloody hell do I look like to you? Your servant?” Y/n asked irritably. “I did not just ruin Daphne Green Ass’s life and become queen bee of Slytherin for you to tell me what to do! I own this school now, got it? I am not gonna listen to some weird hologram type thing when you’re not even actually alive looking like that!”

Mattheo gave her a look. “Shut it.” He hissed.

She crossed her arms. “You’re such a good friend, Mattheo. Honestly. Telling me to shut it and begging your father not to have you kill me. And I thought Hogwarts was terrifying for a moment.” She said sarcastically.

Tom groaned. “You’re both fools!”

“Stop talking like that!” Y/n yelled. “You sound dumb and annoying! Talk like we do because I swear this whole Stone Age vocabulary is really starting to piss me off!”

“Hey, Tom!” Harry yelled, kneeling over Tom Riddle’s diary with a basilisk fang. “Get a load of this.”

Tom reached out. “No!”

But it was too late, Harry had already stabbed the diary and made Tom stumble.

Y/n smacked Mattheo. “You blithering idiot! How could you bring me down here?!”

“You wanted to save Harry!”

“Oh, so now saving Harry means almost dying with him?!” She snapped. “I’ll remember that one.”

“Oh, shut up!” He shot back.

Year Three

“Don’t try to kill me this year, huh, Mattheo.” Y/n joked as they sat at their usual table on the train.

He rolled his eyes. “I didn’t mean to.”

Draco sat beside them. “What’re you two going on about this time?”

“Mattheo almost killed me last year.” Y/n said brightly.

Draco looked at Mattheo. “She’s still not over it?”

“I could’ve died! Hello? Does you not see the problem with that?!” She yelled irritably.

“You weren’t going to die!” Mattheo yelled. “I wouldn’t have killed you and he couldn’t do it!”

She scowled at him. “Let me have my moment, Riddle-Me-This.”

Year Four

“Is that-“ Y/n started, grabbing onto Mattheo’s hand absentmindedly.

He squeezed hers. “Cedric Diggory.”

She covered her face in his shoulder. “That would’ve been me in the Chamber of Secrets. Why couldn’t it have been me?!”

“You’re so dramatic.” Mattheo said, rolling his eyes but still holding onto her tightly as he watched Mr. Digorry run down to where Harry was crying over Cedric’s body.

Year Five

“I swear that dwarf looking flamingo is getting on my last bloody nerves.” Y/n muttered.

Mattheo snorted, looking over at her. “I think you’re handling it all just fine.”

“Look at my hand!” She shrieked, showing Mattheo her hand that had three sentences cut into it with dried blood around it.

His eyes widened. “She did that to you?!”

“She gave me a pen to do it so I technically did it to myself.” Y/n corrected, her eyes watering. “It still burns.”

Mattheo rushed out of the common room and to Professor Umbridge’s office, barging in. “You can’t hurt her! I won’t allow it!”

“What was that, dear?” She asked innocently.

“Y/n. If she still has those cuts on her by tomorrow I’ll be letting my father know.” He said angrily.

She looked at him. “She was being disrespectful.”

“I don’t care what she was being. You better understand who’s higher authority in this, or you’ll end up dead on the street like the Mudbloods.”

She nodded slowly. “I’ll keep that in mind, dear.”

Mattheo hurried out and back to Y/n, holding onto her hand gently and looking at it. “I’ll have to find her little toy so she’ll have to find another way of punishing students, but I want you to know she’s not going to do this to you anymore. She won’t cause any harm to you as long as I’m here.”

Y/n smiled at him. “You’ve got more balls than I think you do.”

“Wanna test that theory?” He asked with a grin.

Year Six

Mattheo looked up at Lilith, who was pacing around his dorm. “You can sit down you know.”

“Shut it.” She hissed before going back to muttering to herself.

He got up from his bed and stopped her by putting both hands out onto her shoulder. “Stressing isn’t going to make this go away.”

“You’re in deep shit, Mattheo.”

“I know, love, but I’ll figure it out.”

“No. I can do it. I can kill him for you. I have reasons to and that way you can remain safe. You and Draco will be fine.”

“You’ll be killing someone, Y/n. I won’t let you do it.”

“I won’t let you follow in your fathers footsteps, Mattheo. I’m doing this and you can change my mind.”

He sighed. “Look, I know it’s scary, I know it’s risky, but I know I can do this.”

She paused then looked up at him. “And that’s exactly what I’m afraid of.”

Year Seven

Y/n hurried over to Mattheo. “He’s back.”

“What?!” He asked groggily, looking up at his fiancé through squinted eyes.

She looked at him. “Your father’s back, love. He wants you downstairs with the rest of us.”

“I’ll be down in a second.”

She pulled him off the bed. “You’ll be down there now. Let’s go.”

He stood up on wobbly legs and walked as quickly as possible behind Y/n. “Why’re we doing this so late?”

“They found my brother.” She whispered, her voice breaking. She cleared her throat and blinked back the tears she was holding before walking into the dining room where all the Death Eaters were.

“Mattheo, my son.” Voldemort said with a small smile. “And his fiancé, Y/n Potter. Lovely to see the both of you. Come sit, come sit.” They sat down on either side of him. “How’s the baby making coming along? I need a promise there will be another heir in case things go wrong.”

“Father, nothing will go wrong.” Mattheo lied.

Y/n looked at her soon to be father in law. “We have full confidence that this will be successful.”

“And you’re alright with me killing your brother?” Voldemort asked suspiciously.

Y/n sat up straighter. “He was a cruel person. I think you’d be doing everyone a favor.”

“The students at Hogwarts don’t think so.” Lucius cut in.

Y/n looked at him. “They don’t know him the way I do. Don’t forget,” she said, looking around, “i’ve spent more time with him than anyone else. Albus Dumbledore left us on the porch of our aunt and uncle for thirteen years.”

“He left you there for fourteen.” Lucius said.

She looked at him. “And that year away he sent me letters about almost everything.”

“But you didn’t find out about me until the next year?” Voldemort asked.

She nodded. “Exactly. Mattheo told me, actually- well he gave me a book about the history and all that.”

Mattheo chewed the inside of his cheek. “Why are we here, father? It’s the middle of the night.”

“We’ve heard of where Harry Potter might go. I have already sent Nagini on her way… If anyone hears anything or sees anything, let me know. The meeting is over now, everyone but the Malfoy’s, Y/n, Mattheo, and Severus can go.” Voldemort said, looking along the table with a smile showing off his ugly top teeth.

The Seraphina x Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way Lore Explanation (NOT CLICKBAIT) (Finally Coming Clean...)

i don't know if anyone remembers that teen apocalypse show Daybreak that Netflix cancelled after one season but im rewatching it while i wait for Yellowjackets s2 and i just transcribed turbo's entire on-screen-text speech from episode 6 and im going a little insane. i love him sm

So I know about inspiration. I’ll tell you this story. It’s something I didn’t understand at first but now I’m coming around to it. It’s a story my dad told me. There was this guy who used to make vases. I don’t know what they call that? A vaser? Maybe? No. That’s wrong. A sculptor. I guess that could be right. A potter? Maybe a potter? I wonder if that’s why the kid is named Harry Potter? Because he made magic. Like made it. What was I saying? Potter? The vase! Right. Those vases were beautiful things. And check this out… the guy would wrap and unfired vase in horse hair — then put it in his kiln. The horse hair would burn off and leave these black, charred scars. But to get the horse hair, the guy would have to pluck it straight from a stallion's tail. How baller is that? And every time he did, that stallion would buck. The vase-maker, vaser, potter — he was pretty good at dodging the kick, cause he knew it was coming. But more than once, the horse would get him. Knocking him in the face and shoulder. Nasty shit. He still had rolling shards of broken bone you could feel, where the horse shattered his clavicle. But Christ in a halo, it was worth the pain. Those vases, man. I know you think I’m a dumb jock, but I can appreciate a thing like that. Well, I look out at you all, and I think that’s what I have here. You’re the bucking horse. I’m the sculptor. And the beautiful vase is all this, Glendale High. Look what we have. But you fuckers broke the vase. And I’m not sure we can ever glue this thing back together. But I’m gonna try. I’m really gonna fucking try.
