My thoughts on FIVE
youtube
LONG POST AHEAD
I found it promising, I’ll tell you that much. I do have to acknowledge my bias towards to this piece of art. It’s WONDERFUL that a musical like SIX has sparked so much creativity and is even getting a parody!! WE’VE MADE IT INTO THE HALL OF FAME QUEENDOM!!
ALSO FUCKING JAIME??? STARKID FANS RISE UP!!
I’m was giving this thing the benefit of the doubt. I was sort of confused when I first learned about it, and I had this gut feeling that I’d hate it. I honestly thought it was kind of weird that we’re using this to make a parody of… TRUMP of all people??? Like these women are still ALIVE to my knowledge.
My only wish is that they acknowledge and give their opinion on this musical in some way because say it with me now; THEIR STILL ALIVE AND HAVE THE RIGHT TO AN OPINION ON HOW THEIR VIEWED!
However I have not seen it yet and I am excited to see what my favorite musical has inspired! …Is what I’d be saying if I hadn’t read some reviews. It seems the general consensus is that while it is funny it’s not as innovative in its humor as it could be. And it may not have done what it wanted
As this TheaterMania review states
“A musical send-up of the women in Trump’s orbit, Five: The Parody Musical, would seem to be just what the doctor ordered as we face the prospect of yet another Trump administration. So why wasn’t I laughing?“
I thought this article was being a little harsh on this musical, until I read THIS.
“The few genuinely funny moments in Five spring entirely from Jen Wineman’s adequate production — her choreography is both simplistic and sloppily executed, which is funny in its own way — and the ingenuity of the actors.”
I was surprised by this, the advertising leaned heavily into the humor of it all. The fact that it was a parody—“LOOK OUT SIX!” And “MAKE AMERICA LAUGH AGAIN!” made me excited to see how they’d creatively dunk on Trump. Like how SIX had done with Henry VIII
Then I remembered what else this article had said in regards to the humor
“The jokes generally hit three points: Donald Trump is orange, he has a small penis, and he likes getting peed on. This is territory that our overpopulated heard of late-night hosts have already stomped to death — without asking audiences to fork over the price of an off-Broadway ticket.””
And I was getting suspicious, so I looked at some more reviews. This article spends a lot of time dogging on FIVE and I was still trying to hold out hope.
This review from StageandCinema is a lot more kind! I was excited to find out what went RIGHT! About this musical!
“Five is much more sexual and crude in its descriptions of being fucked by Donald Trump. Hearing about his small prick and his sexual escapades (especially from pornstar Stormy), I struggled to immediately delete such images from my mind’s eye. The thought of Donald in any sexual act turned my stomach, which may have kept me from laughing. Perhaps nausea and comedy cancel each other out?”
OH… UHM…
Of course in the end they do have the same acknowledgment at the end of SIX, “Just because we were fucked by Donald Trump doesn’t mean we need to fuck each other over.” (A direct quote from the end of the paragraph containing the previous quote)
Through this article I also found out that this is actually a jukebox parody! (Which is when you parody existing songs in order to use it in the plot of a musical story telling medium). Which honestly was a welcome surprise. They’re not ashamed that is a BLATANT parody.
Okay! Let’s see what else we can find!
“It did seem like a clever idea, for at least five seconds”
WOW okay…
This article then goes on to discuss some political and legal matters that has come up surrounding the Sex worker that Trump is going against in court. He IS the first president with a criminal record (he went to court for sexual abuse, and also was impeached)
The article puts it perfectly
“Given such news of late, it’s increasingly difficult for me to appreciate, or even tolerate, a trivial show like “Five.” The creative team hasn’t read the room.”
This isn’t a fuck you to Trump supporters, this isn’t seriously discussing Trump’s effect on these women in ANY sort of fashion, this isn’t even ABOUT discussing Trump’s political status. It’s about parodying SIX and making fun of these women. The main selling point is “WHAT IF SIX BUT TRUMP!?”
“But even those who still view political humor as political armor will be disappointed, because “Five” seems little interested in Trump’s treatment of women, much less his threat to American democracy; instead, its main target is “Six.”  As political commentary, “Five” is near witless, tasteless, and toothless. But even just as a parody of “Six,” it’s too on the nose. If some theatergoers will find “Five” entertaining, I suspect it’ll largely be because its talented six-member cast makes the most of the moments in the show that add up to a stealth, second-rate “Forbidden Broadway.”
This review is BRUTAL it points out the flaws it see’s in FIVE with wit full words. This article was my turning point. It made me genuinely start to be dissatisfied with a show I HAVEN’T EVEN SEEN YET.
““Five” is not an exercise in female empowerment; the women in Trump’s lives are most often mocked.  Nor is it a takedown of a would-be tyrant; zingers against Trump rarely get more sophisticated than commenting on the size of his penis or calling him the orange bitch or orange troll.”
This is an insult to the very FABRIC of my opinions. THIS WAS A PARODY OF SIX. OF SIX. INCLUDE STUFF FROM SIX. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE MORAL DOES NOT MEAN YOU TAUGHT IT. TRUMP IS NOT A GOOD PERSON.
THIS IS A PARODY OF SIX. BE CREATIVE WITH YOUR INSULTS! IF YOU’RE MAKING A PARODY ABOUT TRUMP THAT HAS TO DO WITH THE SUFFARAGE OF WOMEN AND WHAT WE DO WITH TRAGEDY; FUCKING SHOW IT!
This is so obviously anti-Trump. But it does’t FEEL that way. It feels against these women as well. Which is strange, considering it’s supposed to be like SIX.
Don’t get me wrong I fucking HATE TRUMP CAN’T WAIT FOR HIS ACTIONS TO CATCH UP TO HIM. But HOLY SHIT this is NOT where I thought this musical was going!
I plan on looking more into this musical, but these are my thoughts for now. I was initially a hater, turned skeptic, turned confused and insulted.
Look—I don’t WANT to be so hateful about something I haven’t seen. But if THIS is what reviews are saying (and there’s barely any of them) then WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH IT???
I WANT THESE ACTRESSES TO HAVE AMAZING CAREERS! But if THIS is the show their put on, a show that is INSULTING women… then what???

The Handmaid’s Tale 5x03 “The Border”👀
Thoughts (and some over-thoughts) 🤔🤓 TLDR: Look, this episode really wanted to fuck me up, like really make me cry, not sure what I ever did to it. Still some laughs, though. Definitely my favorite of the season so far.
Luke… can someone please tell me why they are making him so obtuse if they want us to like him?😂 I get that “Gilead is a block box” on a some fronts but Luke has known enough people who have literally first-hand lived in Gilead (not to mention Rachel and Tuello who seem pretty available to him certainly know a bit about how society and the classes function if not the politics) that I’m getting a little tired of the “well he was never there” excuse for his continued ignorance of certain things, like how refugees deal with their own trauma differently, or that Gilead has a very strict dress color-coded dress code and ALL of it has meaning. You mean to tell me he has been gathering all that info and all those photos of little girls in pink dresses and bonnets for years in his search for Hannah and it doesn’t stand out that this is a very different (and much more grown up) outfit? I will ONLY give him a pass on this if it turns out he’s color blind.
I already love Lily, please don’t kill her off. "women always say that when they've done something extraordinary"👏 I love her. I also enjoyed the callback to “I thought you’d be taller”😂 (even though as a 5’3” person who’s always being underestimated I can relate to June🙄😂). I did find it interesting that the last person who delivered that line was “Daisy”, also resistance. And we find out later in s2 that Ofglenn who suicide bombed the new red center opening was also named “Lily”. All fighters, all flowers🌼. And now we also have a “Rose”? Coincidence?? (is anything in THT ever a coincidence?)👀
I feel like Moira was seeing June through Lily’s eyes here was so needed. They’ve been so disconnected lately, with Moira just seeming scared of, baffled and frustrated with June, and I think she needed that reminder of badass rebel June, not just the struggling June who killed Fred, but the leader June who made angels flight happen; her friend the fierce loyal fighter with a huge heart, who inspired her to fight and get out when she wanted to give up. She needed to be reminded of the good she’s done and hope she’s inspired in others (I’m not sure she even knew about the exchange for Fred June orchestrated??).  And by the end it seems like they’re back on the same team (at least for now?).
Serena is insufferable. The “respect Fred deserves" 😂😂 SHE IS FLUSTERED WHEN TUELLO WALKS OUT.
Can’t help but love when Lily refers to Nick as “your guy”😏😁
Likewise to her attitude toward June, I noted a similar shift in Moira’s attitude about the women’s camp. Very much see parallels here. She first refers to them as “suicidal”, infers that they’re dangerous and damaged (and she didn’t tell June because she was afraid June would join if she knew about them). They, like June, do not fall into the “healthy” “healing and moving on” mindset she’s subscribed to and think is best. But I think we see her realize maybe she was wrong, and gain and admiration and respect for them and what they’re doing (even if that way is not for her)...especially when we hear that MAGIC WORD...
MAYDAY. May. fucking. Day. Y’all, when I say I cried... I’m starting to well up just thinking about it."We thought it was made up. We thought it wasn’t real. We thought we made it up because we had to.”  “Then you were Mayday too” 😭😭 ...what a cathartic moment... WHAT a pay off.
Also loved when Lily, talking of the people they’ve lost, said “but everyone who works with Mayday knows the stakes”. Can the people who insist June is responsible for the death of literally anyone who dies while anywhere near her proximity please take note? Yes there are some choices she’s made that have specifically yielded bad consequences that she is more culpable for but everyone who chose to plan and fight alongside her (especially rn thinking Beth, Sienna, Alma, Brianna) knew the stakes and made their own decisions, and to say otherwise is to do THEM a disservice, in undermining their agency and their bravery. Enough with the “her fault” Aunt Lydia bullshit.
Lawrence laughing in Tuello’s face, he basically hung a metaphorical “no solicitors” sign on the door and said goodday, sir.
Serena doesn’t like MacKenszie’s suspicions about Fred’s death, she’s worried it might undermine her blackmail ambitions! Oh no!
Aunt Lydia is unhinged and needs therapy and anger management, not prayer. And yes, this is obviously foreshadowing / the seed of Lydia’s journey that will eventually get her to where she is in the Testaments. Got to say, this episode was really keen on foreshadowing.
Back to the Most Awkward Gilead Dinner Party From Hell ever (at least that would be my idea of hell without Lawrence’s one liners to almost save it. And I guess that Nick’s there). Speaking of, Nick (and Rose??maybe?? Might have actually been sincere on her part) performing the “Gilead happy couple show” or whatever that was, was... disorienting? This is the first time we’ve seen him play the “happily-married” “happy to be here, sir!” commander role and yeah it was a little unnerving because it’s so obviously not Nick happy, it’s Nick play acting at happy? Which I guess maybe we would buy except that we know Nick. And while it does seem that he and Rose have a caring partnership with a good deal of trust, and I do hope they are able to share some genuine moments of peace and levity in the safety of their home, we’ve seen him alone with her and by himself and that is not a happy man (and though I very much want happiness for him that will never happen in Gilead). His happy good young loyal commander mask started to slip real quick though when Commander MacAsshole started shit-talking June (calling her a devil! He LITERALLY demonizes her! 😈🤣 the drama! honestly these Gilead folks are too much) and throwing around thinly veiled metaphorical threats (or was that a simile?). Anyhow, excuse me, Mr. Blaine, PLEASE CONTROL YOUR FACE, SIR.😅 I will be VERY interested to see how much loyalty Mrs. Blaine actually has towards her dad’s (WHO IS HE?) very good friend (I mean THAT can’t be a coincidence). And will she also ultimately be forced to choose between Nick and her Dad?? Not really sure of her deal yet definitely makes me nervous, but we do know Rose also has shown a good deal of empathy for June and she seems genuinely kind hearted... (also she DOES kind of look like a grown up Eden and it kind of throws me 😳)
Of COURSE the young sympathetic guardian helping at the border has to go back to Gilead to HIS WIFE AND CHILD he can’t leave behind. Jesus, why not just name the character “NICodemus”? You could cut this foreshadowing with a knife
I would like to state for the record that I owe Mr. Mark Tuello an apology (FOR NOW, I’ve still got my eye on you, Mark) for assuming HE was the one to pull Nick into an indiscreet rendezvous in a very open gazebo with commanders nearby. Shoulda known, textbook Nick, only ever (and almost always) reckless when it comes to June. Oh, my poor love-sick boy.🥺 Although I might be careful, Mac, the last commander who insisted on calling Nick SON didn’t end up too well.
Started crying again when Naomi appeared in that doorway with baby Charlotte (even if she insists Lydia forced her, I don’t fully buy it). I think this season has made me wish for a redemption arc for Naomi? After Warren gets dealt with I kind of just want her and Janine to escape to Canada and be bff’s and eat macarons and raise Angela Charlotte together, is that wrong? (fan fic idea??👀) Yeah no I guess that would be wrong.
Not sure I can really go into the phone call without aggressively weeping… there are some things I loved and some I did not, and I may be still processing, so... I will just say that if anyone who makes fan vids really wanted to rip a shipper’s heart out in a very painful but kinda good way, the song “Someone You Loved” (duet version) would be a really good one to use for an edit centered around the call and reflecting back on their relationship so far from both their perspectives (and why they need each other)👀. I purposely say SO FAR because I refuse to accept anything is over, nothing is ever over with these two no matter how many times they say goodbye (and they didn’t even technically SAY goodbye hear, so hah).
Ok I will say one more thing about it: the Nick fantasizing/day dreaming about them kissing thing was interesting, wasn’t it? For one that they didn’t just use a flashback of a previous kiss (which would have been much easier), and also as I’ve seen mentioned, that this is the first time we’ve seen into a character’s head besides June(??) WTF is going on here? Am I just overthinking it?🤔
I think by now we have scientifically proven that Janine cannot be killed and ok I am here for it (but knocking on wood just in case).
I believe Serena is standing back in the exact spot where she read (the cost of which her pinky), receiving yet another undesirable sentence…she’ll roll with it, though. Infrastructure…😂
I have to end by saying just how much I enjoyed watching Serena get rejected by not one but basically two different men who she thought she had wrapped around her manipulative little finger. And she was SO sure of herself, so smug with Tuello about her “prospects” in Gilead🤣. Maybe overestimating your charms, Serena?😂😂  I mean, we knew she had no chance with JLaw but I was worried about Tuello for a minute there (STAY STRONG, MARK). The schadenfreude is real, y’all.
Actually no, I’m going to end by saying just how much I enjoyed how fucking SCARED of June Serena is. That’s right, you better RUN 🤣 Just shows what a hypocritical coward she is when she doesn’t have Gilead or Fred or Tuello or her deranged Canadian fan club to hide behind. After June was forced to live under the fear of Serena’s selfish whims, mood swings and cruelty for so long, it is SO gratifying to see the tables turned. That’s not even schadenfreude, that’s just justice.😂

So another try to get this part of the collaboration with @paigenoelchas-blog and other writers to upload 😮‍💨 Maybe this time it will work, if it worked the parts are split! I know it's annoying and I wanted to do it completely but there seems to be no other way😑 I got inspired by movies like Pride and Prejudice, little women and musicals like Hamilton and Cyrano for this part! I hope this works 🙏
I hope you like it! Have a great day<3
PS: I listened to a playlist while writing to get me in the mood 😅 I will link it for you on the other part.
PPS : if this works thanks for the help @x3kristax3
Dusty Rooms and Poetry (somewhere in America 1840)
Hospital - Jake
I'm walking through the white room, restless as I watch her still sleeping figure in the bed. She looks so small in it, as if she could shatter into a million pieces any second. My skin itches just to think about her never waking up again, my head hurts I should stop thinking altogether. My phone rings constantly, it's mostly Lilly and Hannah worrying about me and her, sometimes the other try to contact me as well but I just can't stand to text them. Not yet. Not right now. I shut off my phone and throw it back onto the small night stand beside her bed. I'm restless but tired, I'm nauseous but hungry, I'm dehydrated but I'm still crying somehow. I sit down on the chair that became like a second bed to me, like support when my legs failed to do so. Her hand is warm but it's not enough, I brush away her hair, put a little streak behind her ear and caress her soft cheek. "Hey there, my love." I say and do something that I started since we arrived here but never did before. I pray and hope to whoever might hear that she can feel and hear what I do and say. "I remembered that one movie you forced me to watch with you. And I know that I looked bored but I actually really enjoyed it and I enjoyed how much you fell in love with it. Like I fell in love with you. And I couldn't stand to see you cry because of the ending but I guess I have to get used to it, right? You are a emotional person and I love this passion about you. I remembered the movie because I was thinking too much again then I started to have this poem in my head. Maybe I write it down, read it to you. I'm sure you would love it."
I would love to hear your poem... It makes me happy... I think before I slip into another unwanted but needed sleep
Somewhere in America 1840
"MC wake up! Wake up!" I open my eyes and at that exact moment my Amme opens the heavy curtains of my room. Light floods every corner and I close my eyes once more to not become too overwhelmed. "Come on get up my lovely child. You have a big day today." I open one eye and look at her. " Big day?" She takes my arms softly and drags me into a sitting position, her brown eyes wide with shock. "Have you forgotten already? You are going to meet the bankers son!" I roll my eyes and push away the duvet. "What if I don't love him? You know what the people say...he is bizarre." My Amme pushes me off the bed and drags me over to the bathroom, sits me down onto a chair and begins to clean my face and body with a wet cloth. Her rosé dress swings carefully with her movements and the white bonnet is secure around her head. "Since when do you care about the talk of the people? And apart from that even if he is as bizarre as the people say, he can provide for you. Give you a good life, my sweet child." I close my eyes against the cold, wet cloth in my face which does not keep me from speaking. "I'm frightened, Amme. Frightened that I will not love him." She stops for a second. "My dear....children need love. Adults need a secure future and women need a safe, provided life. There is no need to fear as long as you have one of those things. Now let's get you dressed, my dear." We stand up and walk back into the bedroom. She began to dress me for the day, starting with my undergarments and the corset, then the under petticoat, the crinoline and then the over petticoat. Next came the camisole and we finished everything with the dress and the shoes. It was pale yellow with black features, I did not pick it out but I loved it immediately and was very grateful to have my Amme. " Now let's eat and then he will arrive." Amme starts to rush towards the door but I stop her halfway through. "I don't think I can swallow a thing, my dearest Amme." Her brown eyes look back at me and I know exactly what they say. "You will still try, Catalina put a lot of effort into your food as she always does." I huff quietly before I nod and join her.

One Dress a Week Challenge
June: Grey
Easter Parade / Judy Garland as Hannah Brown
As usual for this movie, the costume owes more to the 1940s (when the movie was made) than to the 1910s (when the movie takes place). The main nod to an attempt to look period is the length of the dress. Not that it really matters, as the fur wrap and bonnet are what draw the attention anyway!
Dressing Hannah in grey for this scene may have been thematic, as this is when she reveals her unrequited love for Don to Johnny. Bit of a downer for a first date...

For the one word weather prompt I ask for Sarah/Hannah and sunshine!!!
Anyways I love them so much.
Sarah can’t pull her eyes from the dust motes dancing in the shafts of sunlight that fall through the windows of the Meeting House, though she knows her attention should be focused on Pastor Miller, standing at the pulpit and assuring them all of their impending banishment to Hell, just as he does every week. He would likely take her wandering focus as further proof of her inherit wickedness, though Sarah tries not to take it personally. Every Sunday, the good pastor stands in front of his obedient congregation and calls them all worthless, doomed sinners. But every other day of the week, he’s quick to smile, to laugh, to play with the children and lend a hand to whatever needs doing in Union. The people in Union seem to love the fire and brimstone of his sermons, so Sarah can’t fault him for understanding his audience.
The dust continues to collect in the Sunday morning sun, the air just outside chilly with approaching winter. Between all the bodies in the Meeting House, the fervent exhales of breath and murmurs of agreement, the air is warm and almost stifling, alive with the presence of all her neighbors. Sarah forces her gaze to shift away, to try and settle on the pastor, but promises of salivation and damnation have never held much interest.
Especially not when her eyes seem to automatically shift toward Pastor Miller’s left, to the first pew where his dutiful family sits every Sunday. His zealous wife, murmuring even now in agreement to his words with her hands clasped together, knuckles white. And his obedient daughter, a strand of goldenrod hair having slipped free from her plain, simple bonnet. Sarah feels a twinge of interest for the first time all morning as she looks at the hair brushing the nape of Hannah’s neck.
As though sensing her thoughts, or perhaps just her attention, Hannah shifts in the pew, lifting her face enough to glance over her shoulder toward Sarah. There’s a quick impulse to look away, to pretend like she’s been focused on saving her damned soul, but Sarah doesn’t glance at her lap, doesn’t do anything but allow herself to meet Hannah’s gaze. She also can’t help but the hint of a smile that flutters across her lips, emboldened by the fact that everyone else’s attention is elsewhere, heads bowed in prayer or focused attentively on the pastor.
Hannah presses her lips together in an attempt to hide her own smile but it’s impossible given the way her emotions seem to show so plainly on her face. “Pay attention,” she mouths, making each syllable purposeful in her teasing, tipping her head toward the pulpit.
That only makes Sarah’s smile harder to fight. She lifts her hands, pressing them together demurely and makes as though to bow her head, though she doesn’t let her gaze leave Hannah’s, a smirk on her lips.
Hannah giggles, realizing her mistake only a second later, widening her eyes comically for Sarah’s benefit. Of course, Mrs. Miller’s head snaps up immediately and she puts a rough hand on her daughter’s shoulder, hissing something under her breath and Sarah watches as Hannah affixes a repentant expression on her face, nodding as she bows her head once more.
A beat later, satisfied that her mother is focused on her prayers once more, Hannah cracks an eye open and offers Sarah a quick, fleeting smile that leaves a smile lingering on Sarah’s own face despite the assurances of her own corruptible soul.
The sun is nearly toward the middle of the robin’s egg sky by the time the sermon reaches its conclusion and the members of the congregation rise, stretching stiff muscles and already launching into discussions of Sunday suppers if they’re lucky, or chores that need doing if they aren’t.
“Make sure you clean out the coop,” Sarah’s father grumbles as they shuffle with the others toward the Meeting House doors, falling firmly in the latter category. “It needs a new bedding of hay.”
Sarah nods, as though this hadn’t already been on her mind for the day. “Aye.” Still, she can be an obedient daughter on Sunday of all days.
Henry walks along beside her, uttering his agreement at some chore being offered in much the same tone Sarah often uses when their father tries to delegate work around the house, like they both don’t know he’s going to end up halfway to drunk before the afternoon is up, leaving them to their own devices as always.
Outside, Sarah squints in the sunlight, letting her eyes adjust to both the brilliant light and the abrupt chill in the air. It smells like snow is not far off, though it still feels a little early for that, and she frowns at the idea, at how much harder everything will be once the snow starts.
“Why so serious, Sarah Fier? Taking Father’s sermons too seriously?”
Sarah turns toward the voice behind her, toward Hannah pulling her threadbare shawl around her shoulders. “Oh, and you aren’t?” She smirks, shaking her head. “And here I thought the pastor’s daughter was to be best of us all.”
“Oh, the best?” Hannah lifts an eyebrow, taking a step toward Sarah, shortening the distance between them. The distance that always feels there, much to Sarah’s disappointment. “That doesn’t sound like much fun.”
The curl of hair is still brushing against Hannah’s neck and Sarah longs to lift her hand, to brush it aside or tuck it back into place. Hannah’s skin would be warm against the tips of her fingers, kissed by the sun overhead, and Sarah knows exactly how Hannah would react to the touch of her own cold fingers, how she would giggle and pretend to twist away, only to allow herself to be coaxed back moments later.
Just like she knows that sparkle in Hannah’s eyes. The curve of her lips. The rosy flush of her rounded cheeks.
Sarah smiles, the flutter in her chest and the brightness in Hannah’s eyes making it difficult to think of an appropriate response to her words. Not that Hannah doesn’t seem to know, somehow, exactly what she’s thinking.
“Hannah!” They both turn toward the voice that cracks through the air, Hannah taking an instinctive step backward. Mrs. Miller’s cheeks are red, eyes dark. “Come here, girl,” she snaps, beckoning Hannah toward where she stands beside her husband and Alderman Goode. “Stop dallying about.”
Hannah gives Sarah an apologetic look, fixing her expression into the one Sarah has noticed she wears for everyone else, assuming the role of the dutiful, pious daughter. Sarah just nods, ignoring the way that Hannah’s departure always feels like it takes a little bit of her with it, hollowing her out until one day there will be nothing left.
Though, that’s not entirely true. Because each time Hannah returns, each time she smiles or laughs or allows Sarah to see that otherwise hidden part of herself, Sarah gets all those pieces of herself back too.
