Eres un pollo 🐓✨
This is inspired by @greekmythcomix (really cute) Greek myth/Ancient Roman chicken series. They're all so charming, I had to try my hand at it.

Welcome to ClassicsTober 2023!
✏️🏺🖊️
In 2021 my friend Dr Cora Beth Fraser and I (@greekmythcomix ) accidentally started ‘Classics-tober’ – a list of Ancient Mediterranean Myth and History prompts for each day in October, so that we had an excuse to draw Classics stuff for a month. We did it again last year and even more people joined in, so we’ll be running it again this year – we’re just putting the final touches to the prompt list for this year. And now that there are a LOT of new Social Media platforms, we’re going to be attempting to run it on as many of them as possible!
The idea is to create something - anything - for the prompt. Like other October prompt lists, it can be an illustration, but it can also be text, reference, historical artefact, video, story, translation... pretty much anything you're interested in from the Ancient Med World that fits with the prompt. There's no pressure to do every single one, just the ones you like.
This year we’ve chosen Ancient Greek Myth Characters, some well-known and others less so.
If you'd like to join in, tag this account and use #ClassicsTober and #ClassicsTober23 on your social media posts when you share them (and if on Tumblr tag this account)
NOTE: please make sure if you share the graphic you add the ALT text (below for you to copy and paste)

Ancient Romans as Novelty T-Shirts from a Magazine
Caesar: Let's assume I'm right, it'll save time.
Octavian: I may be wrong, but it's highly unlikely.
(Like father like son, adopted or not.)
Agrippa: I'm not bossy. I'm aggressively helpful.
Antony: Admit it...life would be so boring without me.
(Bonus was "Anthony's Beer Removal Service. Pints. Pitchers. Kegs . No job too big or too small" which admittedly is spelled wrong but was close enough to make me laugh)
Lepidus: I'm just here for the leftovers.
Dolabella: How to Handle Stress Like a Dog. If you can't eat it or play with it, then pee on it and walk away.
Cicero: Don't worry I CAN FIX IT.
(Meaning the Republic...)
Cato: Yes, I know they pick on you at school and call you names, but you still have to go, you're the teacher!
Catiline: Just be happy I'm not a twin.
If you saw someone do this, let me know and I'll credit them. I legitimately got a magazine with those shirts in it today and picked from there, but I think I've seen this style meme before. I have seen too many Roman memes at this point 😂 I would guess @just-late-roman-republic-things or @theromaboo if there has been one! If not, they inspired me to let out my classical humanities nerdism anyway! (As well as @greekmythcomix and her chickens.

Under the adobe of Olympian palace 🏛️🏺🪔
Heavily inspired by Professor Jenks-Brown @greekmythcomix’s #Classicstober - even though deals with love magic, charms, amulets, & potions of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean-Near Eastern world (an idea from my friend, @aimee-maroux, who happened to be writing erotic stories of the Greek gods, also.)
Ares feels worn down from carrying the heavy war armor and weapons all the time, while his wounds haven’t been healed enough yet. This often leads to Aphrodite’s messaging one of Ares’ wounds with her magic love potions/charms and both of them cuddling, smooching, and having their passionate nights later afterward. The magical love potions/charms of late antiquity are all Ancient Greek, Ancient Near Eastern (especially Babylonians, Assyrians and Phoenicians) & Ancient Egyptian; as her home, Cyprus is a melting pot of all of them.
From right to left on the 1st table: the Ancient Greek honey cheesecake, figs, pomegranates, dates, grapes, mandrakes, and Roman honey cookies (often filled with various types of nuts, opium seeds & almonds) While the mandrake tree - often associated with witchcraft & magic - wasn’t popular among the Ancient Greek society per se (as they often burning them as incense), it is widely used as a tree of love & fertility/ a fortune amulet in Ancient Egypt & Near East. As cousins of the nightshade, mandrake is both hallucinogenic & narcotic, and small usages of the tree have been used as a surgical anesthetic/ pain relief in ancient times. The 2nd table got the main vegetarian meal, of course: hearty red lentil saffron soup & Greek pita bread. I plan to add a silver tray of oysters to it, but I don't think it will fit in the aphrodisiac collection. The final table was filled with apples, wine & several love potions/ amulets that the goddess currently working on.

I just had a look online to find if anyone had made a list of all the names of fighters in the Iliad, and I discovered that someone in fact had.
I had.
Me.
In 2015.
I have absolutely no memory of this.
I made a spreadsheet, and even wordclouds ffs.
It’s even got what side they’re on, where they’re originally from, their epithet and patronymic if they have one. Wow.
And, you can filter it by any of these to find which version of a character you need.
Oh my god I even put if they brought SHIPS? I made an excel spreadsheet of the CATALOGUE OF SHIPS. (I’m Dyscalculaic though so they might be wrong ha!)
Anyway, thanks, past-fugue-state-me?!
I’m sure I used it to make the Deaths in the Iliad infographic: https://www.tumblr.com/greekmythcomix/722650261704867840/death-in-the-iliad-an-infographic-originally
Anyway, the ‘names in the Iliad’ post is here with links to the spreadsheet: https://greekmythcomix.com/2015/07/21/fighters-in-the-iliad/
Have fun with it!

It’s the last day of #ClassicsTober23 , and I ( @greekmythcomix ) just want to say a massive thank you on behalf of me and Dr Fraser to everyone who has taken part over here on Tumblr, in our third year of running the prompts!
Such. Utterly. Fabulous. Art!
And such creativity in the types of posts!
If you’re on Twitter or Instagram it’s also worth checking out the hashtag - on Twitter particularly we’ve had artefacts: mosaic, pottery, stelae, and sculpture; reception paintings; storytelling; explanatory videos; translation; poetry; memes; cross-cultural mashups; jewellery design; soap, scent and candle creation; musical reception; cross-stitch; sewing patterns; and of course illustration! It has been a FEAST this year and such an amazing celebration of the ancient world!
Thank you all again!
Jenks x

This is one of the educational ones. Greek Myth Comix has Greek mythology in stick-figure format, probably influenced by XKCD.
These can be used to teach kids of all ages about certain mythological figures or ancient Greek concepts, like Kudos or the Homeric Hero.
I especially like the Moirai and the Muses poster, I printed these out and have them on my board for reference.
Make sure you visit their store for neat merchandise or large posters.

11) Lay-jax Tel-capon and Lay-jax Fowl-eus (Ajax Telamon and Ajax Oileus)
12) Ares. He's just not funny.
13) The Death of Sar-peck-don (Sarpedon) (With apologies to Euphronios)
It is very likely there will be more of this ridiculousness.

I know: it’s not Greek, it’s not myth, and it’s chickens of all things… but my brain is still an Our Flag Means Death fanzine and Tumblr is the place for this kind of ridiculousness so…
