A silly art piece of the gang couple in the 90s Disney and Dreamworks art style!!! Paying tribute to the some of my favorite series growing up: Dreamworks’ Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas and The Prince of Egypt, Disney’s Aladdin and Hercules.

I always imagined the Charites would wore the same as the Muses in the movie, albeit more colorful and patterns!!! The original designs of Aphrodite and Ares by Lisa Kudrow in the Disney Hercules film and series are also unironically my favorite, so I kind of took a little inspiration from them as well.

Aphrodite and Adonis in their older Mesopotamian forms; Inanna-Ishtar, the warlike goddess of beauty, fertility, and love and Dumuzi, her husband and the shepherd king of ageless Uruk.🦁🐏
Tumblr media
Here are the poem snippet that I used as the main inspo, written by Enhueduanna, high priestess of the moon god Nanna/Sin and daughter of King Sargon & Queen Tashlultum of Akkad. As she became a devotee of Inanna and composed various exaltation hymns to the goddess, she also composed 42 hymns addressed to many temples and sanctuaries across the land of Sumer and Akkad, the so-called Temple Hymns; which makes her become the earliest known named author in world history.
The ziggurat temple background was based on the Eanna temple (”House” of Inanna) in Uruk, which was built during the 3rd dynasty of Ur (21st cent BC) and had been mentioned throughout in the Epic of Gilgamesh; while their clothing was from later recent Assyrian & Babylonian era. All of the offerings were based on the depictions on the Warka vase from the National Museum of Iraq - an agricultural festival that seemed to be connected with the rituals involved with the goddess.

Mom I am sorry. I used to yell at you to stop telling me what to do. I thought you did not understand. I was tired of you asking so many questions. I can not believe that I was yelling and saying that you should leave me alone. It is now that I understand. It is now that I want you to please tell me what to do.  Now mom, it is me that does not understand this world. Now it is me with all the question without any answers. So mom, please never leave my side. Now I have realized that the other half of my heart always belonged to you. The woman that created me in the first place.

Aphrodite paintings in C1st A.D. Pompeii
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m in love with the way that the ancient Pompeiians drew Aphrodite. One noticeable thing is that in every painting she’s accompanied by her children (in 6/7 murals she’s with Eros and in the remaining one she’s with Aeneas)
Aphrodite was the patron goddess of Pompeii. Before the eruption of AD 79, there was even a temple in her honour being built in the Sanctuary of Venus. Although the temple was never finished, many frescoes depicting Aphrodite do survive
As her worshipper, I think that these artworks capture her SO well <3

✨Gossiping 🎙️🗣️✨
Had been throwing a little DTYIS challenge on Instagram, and now on Tumblr, too!!!! Inspired by what the name suggested, the later Roman murals of Ares and Aphrodite gossiping with each other. 🏛️🌿
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The goddess of love and beauty Aphrodite herself has always seemed to be acknowledgeable about everything literally, due to her both direct & passive involvement with various pantheon myths (as a center/ cause of attention😘🤭); while Ares always talks about his involvement in war, conflicts + his feuds with fellow soldiers/war gods, tbh. He had always been known to be much more of a ” armor & hat off, take a relaxing bath, smoke few joints and gossip sesh with my girl & her tribe” kinda guy. 😌

Finding love through sharing pain, sorrow, and loss. ❤️‍🩹🌹🍎
A study based on Adam and Eve after the Fall (Adam og Eva efter Syndefaldet) by Johan Vilhelm Gertner & inspired by the recent painting of @greypetrel. 💙 Had been quite a long time for me younger Aphrodite and Ares in their own Bronze Age Cypriot (Alashiyan) clothing (with jewelry ornaments came from all over Greece, Anatolia, Egypt, Levant, Mesopotamia) and Mycenaean Greek clothing.
Both of them met at a strange time and a strange place, outside the constraints of time and space. A spark between them would be created based on their sharing of grieving deceased mortal human lovers, bloomed into the flowers of close friendship bonds and ripened into the fruits of love. Aphrodite was still that brash, independent young woman during this time and until now, impulsive, ambitious and calculating, can be both kind or careless with other’s feelings, property, or even their lives. Ares, himself, was still hated and reviled by his family members, especially Zeus; and quite different from the later older, mature, and wiser bearded Ares that I usually drew him as.
