Chapter Two: Disappear
Ch1: Lifeline |
Read on AO3
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters: Radek Zelenka, Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Chuck, Evan Lorne, Laura Cadman, Sam Carter, Bill Lee, More to add
Rating: T
Word Count: 2,223
Tags: AU - Canon Divergence, Episode Rewrite
Note: I've labeled locations because of what happens in the actual episode. I may drop it after this chapter.
Location: Atlantis
Radek toweled the grease off his hands. “I don’t think it’s a spare hyperdrive, Rodney.”
“Oh yeah, and why’s that?”
Radek pushed his glasses up his nose. “It isn’t connected to the central engine,” he threw his hands up, “it isn’t connected to anything.” He leaned forward, “What if it was another ancient experiment?”
Rodney wiped the sweat off his brow. “Well, we don’t really have much of a choice now do we?”
Radek nodded sadly. “This is true.”
Rodney pulled open the hatch, “Shit.” he rubbed a hand over his face and tapped his communicator, “Alright, start dismantling sublight, only one at a time.” he grimaced, “We could deal with one missing.”
Radek frowned; he knew as well as Rodney that it would take at least two.
Location: Apollo
“Damn,” Sam said as the puddle jumper went into hyperdrive. “We missed them.”
“We’ll deal with that later,” Ellis said, “power weapons.”
“Powering weapons,”
The replicator ships came into view. “Fire,” he said.
They started breaking up from the impact. “Replicator ships destroyed.”
“Hurry,” Sam said, “follow their trail.”
They opened up a hyperspace window.
Location: Atlantis
Seven non-essential areas stripped.
Five teleporters.
One holo-room.
And three sublight engines.
“It’s done,” Rodney said relieved. It was short-lived as the billions of other problems flooded in. The first being the replicators on their tail. He tapped his communicator, “All ready to go on this end, Radek.”
“Thirty minutes till everything is connected together.”
“Thirty minutes!?” He held a hand over his forehead. Fuck. “I’m coming.” Rodney barreled into the room and shoved a scientist out of the way. He slid under the conduit Radek was wedged under. “Let’s make it five.”
Radek snorted, “Oh yes, because this is possible.”
“Fine,” Rodney rolled his eyes, “fifteen.”
They smiled despite the situation.
Ten minutes later they were both headed toward the gate room. Rodney explained the details of the cobbled-together hyperdrive to the technicians, “You got it?”
The group nodded and ran to their specific stations. Chuck turned in his chair and entered in the estimated coordinates, hand hovering over the button.
A hyperspace window opened close to their proximity.
“Sergent!” John yelled.
“Yes, sir.”
Chuck hit the button.
Location: Apollo
“Where’d they go?” Bill stammered.
“There was no hyperspace window.” Sam blinked. “They just disappeared.”
Ellis tilted his head. “I’m going to guess that this isn’t normal.”
Sam shook her head, “No, it’s not.”
Bill raised a finger, “You see, nothing we know is capable of making a ship-,” Bill smiled, “Well anything really,” he nodded, “-disappear without any traces left behind,” he pushed his glasses up, “it’s actually one of the more-”
“Bill,” Sam said, shooting him a look.
Bill visibly swallowed back the words, “Right.”
-
“Report,” Ellis said as he stepped onto the bridge.
Sam frowned, “Thirty-six hours and nothing.”
“They want us back.” He said.
Sam sighed and looked over at the place where they had disappeared. It had to be powerful to send them away in such a manner. No energy signature, no window. It was like nothing they had ever witnessed before.
“Understood sir.” She tilted her head. “Let’s drop a probe, keep tabs on this section of space. It’s quite possible they could return.” She shrugged, “Who knows.”
Ellis nodded, Sam left the bridge and made her way over to a window. She stared at the same patch of empty space. Bill came up to her side and patted her shoulder.
“I feel like they're out there somewhere,” he said, “I won't give up hope.”
“I think you’re right.” Sam smiled at him and bumped her shoulder against his, “and that makes two of us.”

A little something different!
I used to be a TOTAL bookworm as a kid, then sort of lost it for a decade or so, then in about 2016/17 I decided to start reading more (& also moved closer to a library & got in the habit of using it).
Fast forward 7ish years and I'm back in the habit of reading & am devouring stacks of books per year, with 2023 being my most ridiculous one yet. I somehow ended up reading 120 books? Mostly because I'm terrible at managing my library holds list & kept getting stacks of books I really wanted to read (I'm also lucky to be a really fast reader, which helps).
Anyways! All that to say - I compiled a top 22 + 19ish honourable mentions, as seen below:
My Top 22:
Tear – Erica Mckeen
Our Wives Under The Sea – Julia Armfield
The Vaster Wilds – Lauren Groff
Paladin’s Strength – T. Kingfisher
Paladin’s Grace – T. Kingfisher
Great Circle – Maggie Shipstead
Between Two Fires – Christopher Buehlman
Sisters – Daisy Johnson
How High We Go In The Dark – Sequoia Nagamatsu

The Memory Police – Yoko Ogawa
The Night Ship – Jess Kidd
The Conjoined – Jen Sookfong Lee
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter – Hazel Gaynor
If An Egyptian Cannot Speak English – Noor Naga
The Annual Migration Of Clouds – Premee Mohamed
Wandering Souls – Cecile Pin
The Only Good Indians – Stephen Graham Jones
Lone Women – Victor Lavalle
Ring Shout – P. Djèlí Clark
Lucy – Jamaica Kincaid
The Bookshop Of Yesterdays – Amy Meyerson
Honourable Mentions:
The Marigold – Andrew F. Sullivan
Five Little Indians – Michelle Good
Swordheart – T. Kingfisher…and all the other books of hers (9 of them in total) I read this year!

To clarify: This is not a case of both universes existing simultaneously. This is an inexplicably-dropped-into-an-entirely-different-universe crossover.
This is not necessarily about which is your favorite character out of these (although it could be. Who am I to tell you what to do here). This is about what would be the most chaotic, the most cursed, the most barely-justifiable plot-wise. The worst, if you will.
And, since there are far more than ten characters I can imagine dumping into the world of Batman and the Justice League with no valid reasoning, there will be more.
The post I made so I can actually add links as a I go because I can’t edit polls

riding the high of seeing challengers twice already means i’ve remembered tumblr (the gifs that will be reblogged..) in time for the monthly book wrap up! coming in thick and fast are we in a post-Easton Ellis world? where did your april reading take you and what’s on the horizon for may?
I've heard that's the movie of the moment!! do you think we'll see a cultural resurgence of casual tennis and all the clouty pickleball courts soon to be taken over by tennis as the lord intended? much 2 think about ..... april was laughably not a big reading month for me ugh so i'll take a page from ur book + talk about some fav watches
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood
my first Atwood! reminded me of The Vegetarian by Han Kang with its theme of appetite linked to interpersonal relationships + unraveling sense of self (in fact this book might've popped on my radar bc of its association with it). I liked how each character had their own quirks + weird shit going on too, made the stakes that much more layered and set a kinda zany world for the plot to unfurl in
Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis
finally acquainted with Mr Ellis... not as graphic as I was expecting it to get but I suppose it's his debut + ultimately a different subject matter/world than American Psycho so Understandable! very sparsely + unfeelingly written which I might've read as lazy had I read it years ago but luckily I'm a dedicated student at the Dennis Cooper Institute of Mundane Morbidity so I can appreciate the detachment as an effective vehicle for plot/development. a little repetitive and predictable after a certain point but I think that was the point of it all. im excited to dive into his later / more thorough works!!
Fan Fiction: A Satire by Tavi Gevinson
not actually a book but a 75 page zine that I devoured in one sitting truly unable to rip my eyes away, so im counting it. rookie mag + tavi were staples for me as a teen and tho I was never a swiftie, she also very much aligns with teenage years in my head + she's also just the perfect subject for this kind of piece so this was incredibly nostalgic... so playful and clever and funny and weird, reminiscent of I Love Dick by Chris Kraus with unreliable + obsessive narrator in autofiction form. RPF is actually very ethical and fun when it's this well-formed methinks
The Adjuster (1991) dir. Atom Egoyan
this is only my 4th Egoyan but I'm so amazed at how he portrays desire and obsession and detachment in an equally unsettling and blasé way, images that stay on my mind weeks later. I feel like I consistently see a lot of praise for Arsinée Khanjian's performance in his films (rightfully so!!), but Gabrielle Rose is such a queen of haunting intensity I just can't not stan!!!
Young Soul Rebels (1991) dir. Isaac Julien
really fun sexy cool giallo set in late 70s london. amazing soundtrack and costume / set design, cultural/racial/sexual clashes expertly touched on in both explicit + subtle ways. Julien has such an incredible eye for detail, I wish he'd make more narrative films
Girls Town (1996) dir. Jim McKay
sensitively nuanced and surprisingly (for being directed by a man) realistic portrayal of girlhood with another great soundtrack + costume design moment. just felt incredibly real between the friendship dynamics and adolescent handling of difficult topics - the kind of movie I wish I'd come across a decade ago but am grateful I got to see such a beautiful restoration of it
Hustler White (1996) dir. Rick Castro, Bruce LaBruce
WOOOOOOF tony fuckin ward........... hard for me to focus on much else at the moment but wow this was so sexy and funny like surprisingly slapstick at times?? i mentioned it in my letterboxd review, but literally slapstick stumbling into a BDSM scene... just a the perfect convergence of things I love to see on screen, a perfect fun time!!
my sister and I are buddy reading (2) referenced works in Fan Fiction: A Satire + I've got a handful of potential picks for AAPIHM reads, probably leaning more towards the nonfiction route bc this JCO short story collection has maxed out my capacity for fiction at the moment

A BRIEF REMINDER:
The final order cutoff for the Image Comics edition of GRIZ GROBUS is TODAY! So if you're a comic book store owner, a independent bookstore manager, or anyone who reads comics, consider ordering the book!
What is Griz Grobus? Here, from the solicitation text:
On a distant planet, a prying scribe, a sentimental constable, and a mayor resurrect a sleepy town’s long-defunct priest-bot. But "Father Stanley" is not what he seems. Meanwhile, in another universe, a hungry wizard accidentally conjures a war-god into the body of a goose. These two intertwined tales make up GRIZ GROBUS, the hit Kickstarter graphic novel sensation now at Image Comics!
Perfect for fans of Hayao Miyazaki, Asterix, and Arthur C. Clarke, and readers 12 and up!
Arriving: June 5, 2024 Lunar Code: 0424IM239 ISBN: 9781534397866
Nice things other comics professionals have been saying about the book:
"Griz Grobus' dual dovetailing narratives let us discover an alien world and a human heart, full of Ghibli style and the finest Tor-novella poise. The team creates a universe, and is generous enough to let us live there." —Kieron Gillen, The Wicked + The Divine, Die, Phonogram
"Rich, beautiful and very funny—one of my favorite comics. Get every book Simon makes." —Tonči Zonjić, Lobster Johnson, Who is Jake Ellis?
"Simon's worldbuilding skills are yet to be matched, but on top of that his stories are both crazy and profound!" —Carlos P. Valderrama, Giants
“It’s amazing. You won’t get a better world builder than Simon Roy. He’s taking us places and I am here for it. Do not miss this.” —Daniel Warren Johnson, Transformers, Do A Powerbomb, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth
"When Simon Roy announces a new book it's an event - and a must buy for me and anyone who loves the medium of words and pictures!!!” —Geoff Darrow, Shaolin Cowboy, Hard Boiled
“Simon Roy’s science-fiction embraces heady ideas of futurism while never forgetting for an instant the foibles and frailties of the humans that exist in it. Griz Grobus is no different—an alien world made lived-in and real by the very human characters who exist within it, where at the end of the day, a full belly is what is worth aspiring to. Another extraordinary piece of work, an addition to a growing body of modern classic science-fiction, Griz Grobus continues the trajectory that began with Habitat.” —Jed McKay, Avengers, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange
“Simon Roy has a way of making strange & alien worlds utterly charming. His world building is unique & filled with quirky characters I strangely want to eat with. AND—I really want an Elaphure.” —Ben Templesmith, 30 Days of Night
"Griz Grobus combines beautiful art and mystical storytelling with an intriguing look at humanity on a world half-alien, half-familiar. A sly and often funny take on the creation of new myths and the rediscovery of the past." —Adrian Tchaikovsky, Hugo and Nebula award winning author of the Children of Time series
"Seriously, it's the perfect kind of Ursula Le Ghibli world and I adore it. The right measure of everything from the writing to the art." —Goran Gligovic, Dagger Dagger, Company of the Eagle
PS - If any of this piques your interest, I'm also running a kickstarter campaign for the hardcover edition of REFUGIUM, - the sequel to this very book! If you or your customers enjoy Wayne Barlowe's strange creatures, or the work of Dougal Dixon, it might scratch a particular itch for you...

As much as Rodney McKay's general bullying, whining, frequent sexual harassment, and insistence on being the main character at all times infuriate the hell out of me, his unrelenting loyalty to Dr. Weir goes a hell of a long way towards redeeming him. In an episode where she is being so frequently dismissed and undermined, hearing McKay laugh off an order from Colonel Ellis, say "I don't think that's really your decision", and turn to Elizabeth for her assessment is positively heartwarming.

Father Figure(2)
Tumblr media
-Through Snake's alumni database, Emma does locate her biological father, Shane McKay, at an address in Stouffville. When she arrives at that address, she sees that it is a medical institution and that Shane, mentally disabled, is a patient. Emma's first thought is that her mother is a heartless woman who deserted Shane during his time of need. Emma's view of her mother changes when she learns the full story and why Spike did not tell her the truth about Shane. But Spike may be in trouble when Shane escapes from the institution and wants to see his old girlfriend. Meanwhile, Spinner managed to get Hazel's locker for Paige, who deems it not to be the perfect locker. In her mind, Jimmy has the perfect locker. Jimmy, knowing that Spinner will probably do anything for the locker, makes a deal with Spinner, one not only that Spinner will find embarrassing to do, but one that Spinner does not realize will put Paige in a bad light.
Pride(1)
Tumblr media
-Despite stating that she will no longer be his cover as his girlfriend, Ellie, who doesn't really get along with most of the others but especially Paige, decides to go along on Marco's invitation to the beach day. Also along as the chauffeur is Paige's openly gay older brother, Dylan. Dylan, attracted to him, suspects Marco may be gay. Marco, also attracted to Dylan, is not ready to come out, especially to his supposed best friend Spinner, who is openly homophobic. Marco goes out of his way to hide his sexual orientation. This includes showing an interest in team sports and going on a date with an unsuspecting Hazel. Meanwhile, Archie is staying at the Jeremiah's temporarily as he has a cold and Spike does not want him to infect Jack. Beyond ruining his weekend with Ashley as the unexpected chaperon, Craig thinks that Snake's symptoms may be a manifestation of something beyond the common cold.

how do you think Khonshu finds out about those who need punishment? from what it looks like in the show, he seems to stay around Marc and doesn’t appear to be able to go far from him. So how does he know about those who harm the travellers of the night? Is it just a sense? Is he all knowing? Or would he only know about people like that in the area Marc is living in?
So I'm going back to a little of the Ellis run for this one, maybe mix in a little Mckay.
Here we have the supernatural aspect. Khonshu is the god of the moon and the sky. If we look back back back into early early days, Khonshu probably watched over Egypt. People traveled by the light of the full moon because of the light it provided to help keep them safe. I imagine they would say a prayer to the moon for protection before leaving. If anything should befoul them, who fell under Khonshu's protection, then he would become vengeful.
When the world grew bigger, I can imagine a time when perhaps Khonshu saw all the suffering at night and it made him feel helpless. So many people looking up at the full moon. So many people in wonder and with hope. Young children watching the moon and dreaming of a magical world. There was probably a point when Khonshu felt for the world and humanity. All these people asking for help. For his help. And he decided that he could not leave them. You see, a god is only a god when he is prayed to. What better way to get them to pray to you than to get them to ask for your help. Who prays to the moon? Someone laying in the street in pain and misery, looking up at the night sky and wishing for more. Asking for anyone out there for help.
Now in the comics, Moon Knight operates in one city. In the latest run, he operates in one neighborhood. He can't be everywhere. Especially stripped of Khonshu's ability to travel.
So he relies on the people to come to him. For word to come to him of someone that needs help.
In the show, Marc talks about where he knew the dead people in the cafe from. Dubai, new york, and so on. So how did Khonshu know where to send Marc?
Marc talks about how these were all bad people. Murders and so on. This gives you the idea that Marc isn't arriving to save people. He's arriving to take care of someone that is hurting people. He's getting there late. He's getting there to stop them from continuing to hurt people. (and as I mentioned before in another ramble, Marc only sees the people he kills, not the good that he is doing in stopping them or the people he is saving).
So how does Khonshu find them? He can feel their pain too. Those murdered looking up at the night sky. There is a great sadness to Khonshu. A frustration and a bitterness that has grown as time slipped by. Especially towards the other gods who seem to prefer to sit by and only observe and do nothing.
Perhaps he feels someone call out and takes Marc to the city and leaves it to Marc to find them. So he travels and perhaps finds multiple people to take out in each city. It's no wonder Khonshu is always telling Marc "one more. This one more mission. How can you complain when there is someone out there causing such suffering?"
I can only imagine Harrow hearing this from Khonshu. How it affected his potentially already broken psyche. So many people in pain and suffering. It's easy to see how Harrow would swing over to Ammit's way of thinking.
It can also lead to a weight on Marc. Not only is he only getting there after the suffering so he can kill someone, but there are so many. It never ends. The suffering never ends. He's guilty of killing and guilty of knowing all the suffering he isn't stopping.
Perhaps Jake keeps Khonshu limited to their area. He can't risk Marc and Steven knowing they are somewhere else. But it is only a matter of time before Khonshu whisks Jake away to 'just this one very bad person'. I wonder how Jake may eventually be affected by Khonshu's desire and frustration to help everyone.
