A Codywan and How to Train Your Dragon crossover that turned into a the Mandalorians factions are dragons AU, because I can never just do something simple and for the heck of it.
If you’re not interested the AU lore, leave now or suffer my rambling lol.
Basically, the idea is that Mandalorians started as a race that could shift into dragons. The Mand’alor line and those of most influence were notably ‘Fury’s (for example Mand’alor Tarre Viszla was a Nightfury and so is his generational line). But over time most Mandolorians who could shift were killed off or just lost the ability as more non-shifter Mandolorians married in. Eventually only a few of the Fury’s were around, and when Mandalore split most chose factions lead by the remaining Fury lines. AKA: the New Mandalorians/Lightfury’s, the Haat Mando'ade or True Mandalorians/Duskfury’s, and the Kyr’tsad or Death Watch/Nightfury’s.
Basically this also helps explain (in my head) why Mandalorians would follow Death Watch (terrorists) or the New Mandalorians (Intense Pacifist). It’s because they see those lines that can still shift as chosen leaders or a physical embodiment of the Ka’ra’s will.
How is Obi-Wan a shifter though? Well in this AU he’s the son of Tor Viszla. Long story short, early on when Obi-Wan was born he displayed being force sensitive, and Obi-WAN’s mom (Tor’s wife??? Idk it’s not important to the story) basically went ‘Aw hell naw’ and tried to drown Obi-Wan. Only to be stopped by a traveling Jedi who stole Obi-Wan and saved him. Totally unaware that this baby was Mandalorian, the son one of the biggest Mandalorian factions, AND also one of the last few existing Mandalorian dragon shifters. (Also Obi-Wan’s mom doesn’t want to admit that she lost Obi-Wan to a Jedi and just tells Tor that he was force sensitive and she succeeded in drowning him).
Maybe I’ll get into it later but basically Obi-Wan grows up as normal in the Temple, but obviously at some point he shifts and has the biggest panic of his life. But with help from friends (Quinlan, Garen, Siri, and Bant) he figures out shifting (enough to control it) and helps keep it a secret (Mandalorians and Jedi still don’t have best relations and Obi-Wan is paranoid about being kicked out of the Order anyways *cough cough Brandomeer cough cough Melinda/Daan*). To be clear, Obi-Wan isn’t like ashamed of what he is. He just doesn’t want the judgments of coming from CLEAR Mandalorian roots, and Death Watch at that. Plus he kinda just decides to not think about how he’s pretty much definitely related to well known terrorist Tar and Pre Viszla, because then he doesn’t have to address it. Besides he’s happy as a Jedi.
Anyways, NOW CODY-
So without getting to detailed (mission failed lol) all the clones ARE shifters (Duskfury’s just like Jango Fett), but they have it suppressed by the Kaminoans (probably part of their chips? I haven’t thought it fully out yet). BUT THINGS HAPPEN, probably Cody and Obi-Wan get stranded alone somewhere for a long time and Cody gets his chipped fucked up somehow, and now he’s shifting into a dragon???? And scaring the shit out of both him and Obi-Wan. But Obi-Wan exposes himself as a dragon shifter as well to comfort Cody and show that he will keep his secret. Plus he clearly understands him. (At this point they both are under the impression the clones aren’t shifters, and think Cody is just an outlier and “late bloomer” so to speak). Cue them learning how to be dragons together and be comfortable in their other form.
And eventually they get rescued and find out somehow all the clones are shifters, and therefore find the chips and discover Palpatine’s plan, SO THE GALAXY IS SAVED!
(Additionally the clones get rights and go to form their own society/group (Obi-Wan comes with to be with other dragons, but mostly to be with Cody), and they form an alliance with the New Mandalorians and accidentally unit Mandalore purely by the three Fury types (Nightfury/Obi-Wan, Duskfury/Cody, Lightfury/Satine) being around each other lol.

From yesterday’s vote, Cody and Obi-Wan it is.
During the war the, Mandalorian prince picked a lion dragon called Ben, brought from a far away land, Stewjoni. At first he didn’t trust the beast, keeping it locked and guarded when it wasn’t fighting for them. With time he started noticing the much higher level of intelligence than the Republic said the dragons had and how calm it was towards his troops. Soon after, the lion dragon was roaming free with the battalion, keeping the soldiers warm at night and watching over the Prince’s tent.
During an ambush, when both the dragon and Cody were surrounded and wounded, the Wbn telepathically shared with his his real name, Obi-Wan, letting the prince use his soul weapon; a katana. With the mental link they began talking, Obi-Wan revealing what the dragons experienced every day in Republic’s slavery. After that Cody began planning how to help them all.

historically, Jedi were dragon riders, bonding for life with dragons to serve the Force and the Galaxy together
a being needs to meet a certain threshold of Force-sensitivity to be able to form such a bond, so any child born above that threshold is sent to the Temple to prepare for such a bond and the duties that come with it
however, over the centuries that have passed since the last Sith Wars, dragons have become increasingly scarce in the galaxy (*cough Banite Sith plot cough*), such that by the time of the Prequels Era, they're considered more or less extinct in the wild, and even within the Order, only a handful of older Masters are actually bonded with a dragon
enter Jango Fett, a man who, like most Mando'ade, had a strange mix of DNA due to his ancestors' tendency to adopt and intermarry with various species
a man whose DNA the Kaminoans were able to use to recreate dragons, according to a contract they received from the Jedi Order (one which none within the Order had known of)
in fact, they were able to create millions of new dragons, of all different types, some previously known and some seemingly new varieties
this led to a complete reversal of the previous imbalance: now, with only about ten thousand Jedi in the Order, there were not nearly enough Jedi to be able to bond with a dragon
as they try to start making assignments, it quickly becomes apparent that a single Jedi can in fact form bonds with multiple dragons at the same time
the reverse had obviously been seen, with a single dragon bonding to knight pairs or Master-Padawan teams, but there had never been such a disparity in the number of dragons seeking to bond with Jedi compared to Jedi
the first such case study was the established pair of Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alpha-17 adding a bond with Cody, but they were quickly upstaged by the case of Ahsoka, already sharing a bond with her Master to Rex, simultaneously establishing new bonds with Echo and Fives

ooooh dragon troopers? 👀
I only have Cody, Rex and Domino Squad sketched out, but I intend to eventually do more of these.
Tumblr media
I really liked the idea of Domino Squad being a bit of a hydra deal because 1) it's hard to coordinate when every single head is trying to do its own thing and 2) the loss of Hevy, Cutup and Droidbait is worse.

Not Just a RomCom: CodyWan AU
This actually did start out as a vaguely normal modern AU but then we all got distracted. Set up with help from @bytebun and @catboydogma.
Single dad Obi-Wan has a pottery studio. (Technically he's parenting his siblings, but he believes he deserves the Respect of a successful single parent.)
Anakin is, as per usual, just. Being incredibly rebellious and uncooperative with Obi-Wan's attempts to be a parent. Anakin, on a rebellious streak (number eighteen of the year) decides to skip out on Obi-mandated college application hours. Yes he wants to be an engineer, but Obi-Wan's pressuring him right now, and he does not want to do what Obi-Wan wants him to do, even if the thing Obi-Wan wants him to do is meant to help Anakin do what he wants to do. Anakin uses his sudden free time to go to the mall and, seeing a pop-up stall for modeling, decides to give it a shot. He's a pretty guy, he can probably do this, right? Can't be that hard!
(You know. He's eighteen. Maybe nineteen. It's that age.)
(Also it is VERY hard.)
Enter Cody, who is not technically, in and of himself famous… but he is the top modeling agent in the country, by virtue of having sourced and negotiated all of Bly's top runway and editorial models, and the guy who is now 'discovering' Anakin Skywalker.
I feel like there's a specific energy to amputee male model Anakin Skywalker and I like it very much.
I was just. Rolling around 'people of similar ages and maturities who have vastly different life experiences, and going 'hm, this is why power/maturity differences are a way bigger issue with teens and early twenties but way less of an issue in middle-aged people.'
Obi-Wan isn't a Big Name With Big Responsibilities, but he has been more or less single-handedly raising his brother and sister. Like yeah his friends and stepsister help out sometimes, but he's been doing this mostly alone since he was twenty-five. He also runs a small business as an artist/creator, and does all the management for it (taxes, advertising, insurance) himself.
Meanwhile, Cody helped out with his own younger siblings, but he was never the primary adult in their lives, and he's got a position that works around communications and networking, and a lot of the management bits get delegated, so it's…. IDK
It's a weird balance that does work out but it feels very odd and strange to both of them at first, especially because there's a Big Difference in financial statuses and the whole 'you are my little brother's new boss, sort of.' I think they initially connect over the parenting-younger-siblings aspect of their lives.
I'm torn between "he does plates and bowls on a wheel" and "he does insane custom fantasy pieces like overly detailed dragons."
Come enjoy this completely normal romcom [take note of the dragons they will be important later]
I do know that, whichever it is, he does classes, including "Wine and wheel" nights where people come in on dates to take a pottery class while tipsy. It's like drunk painting nights.
I want Cody taking Obi-Wan out on the fanciest dates, like the kind of NYC restaurant where an entree is $200. Sometimes dinner turns into "bitching about Anakin" sessions.
Obi-Wan: I cannot help you. Cody: You raised him. Obi-Wan: Yes. But you are the one who signed a contract to keep him around. You made this bed. Lie in it.
"I inherited this can of worms. You grabbed it off the shelf, paid in full, and were then surprised that there were worms."
Side note I've decided that the head of his legal department is Padme. She and Rex (IDK what his actual job is?) are in competition to gain Anakin's affections. IDK how legal that is but Padme probably ensured it was fine before she got involved.
Alternately, Rex is a fellow model (he's using it to pay for college) and he can flirt with Anakin as much as he wants (which is usually not that much), and Padme can't.
She wants to! Anakin is flirting with her! But. Legally. She can't. (Yet.)
Padme: Until your position has been secured in such a way that I cannot influence it, I cannot date you. Anakin: 🥺
And now we get to the part where it is... not just a RomCom.
Because I was... trying VERY hard not to talk about The Last Dragon chronicles (you know, The Fire Within, etc.). And then I did. And now it's part of this AU.
Quiet subplot to the entire romance and Anakin's modeling journey is the fact that Obi-Wan and Ahsoka are just making sapient dragon statues to hand out to their friends.
Obi-Wan: Okay Cody, as a symbol of my affection, here is a statue of a dragon. It's got some props that are related to your passions. It survives on your love. Cody: Aw, that's cute. Thanks. Cody, that night: [hears some small scraping noises and weird shuffling] Cody: [looks up and sees the dragon statue moving] Cody, whispering: what the fuck
HE THOUGHT HE WAS IN A ROMCOM WHAT IS THIS
Anakin is not very good at the dragonmaking. He tries, for Rex and Padme, but he's. Not very good at it, at least not compared to his siblings. Ahsoka has to go through it with him, step by step, so the dragons are Worth Giving.
They gotta be perfect.
Obi-Wan definitely makes other things as well but the Dragons are absolutely magical. (Vases and plates and whatnot are easier to sell, though.)
The one he made for Anakin (right after Qui-Gon and Shmi died) has a cyborg arm, because it just felt right. Ten years later, Anakin lost his arm in a freak accident, and everyone was like oh.
I feel like Obi-Wan's dragon might actually have a shield? Because he defines himself in large part around protecting and raising his siblings. His dragon is also less 'dragon' and more 'Boga the varactyl.'
Cody's needs to be something about connection and networking, since his whole thing in this AU is making connections and figuring out how to put people where they need to be. I'm partial to a spiderweb hanging from the end of the statue's raised tail, and also he's got a tie on.
Padme's comes with a fountain pen. Rex's has jaig eyes and feathered wings. Unrelated, I do think he's studying to be a social worker.
I'm not entirely sure what I want Ahsoka's role to be, insofar as what about her is reflected in the statue. I think I'm going to say she's a skater girl, so her dragon has a board and knee/elbow pads? Or possibly a paintbrush. IDK. Still poking her open.
A giant eastern dragon statue that watches over the house from a central location as a vestige of Great-Grandpa Yoda. It is in fact bigger than Yoda himself. It's one of those incredibly long and complicatedly coiled ones.
I think I really enjoy Anakin being just. Really bad at clay stuff compared to Obi-Wan and Ahsoka. Ahsoka is happily being primed to take over the family business one day.
What Anakin does eventually turn out to be incredibly, terrifyingly good at is steampunk dragon automatons.
Like this but it's real and it moves:
Tumblr media
(Source)
And you assume it's just like. A windup toy? And it is... when you're looking. If you look away (or it trusts you), it moves on its own. When Anakin's dragons move, everyone just assumes there's a battery or something.
Anakin's just really excited that he can continue the family tradition but like in his own way. Fuck knows he can't really do anything on his siblings' level with clay, but he can do clockwork.
It's the GG fan in me popping out, nothing is cooler than steampunk automata with minds of their own.

Some doodles of Cody and Rex from my Dragon shifter AU (AKA: my How To Train Your Dragon/ Clone Wars crossover)
Wanted to practice drawing the Duskfury/Cody’s dragon form. Plus conceptualize Rex’s dragon form.
Also since Cody was the first clone to gain his dragon from from his damaged chip, the first person he told/showed (other than Obi-Wan) was Rex. Except Rex was totally a dramatic little brother about it.
See my previous post about this AU for more details if you’re interested.

[Podfic Link] | Length: 17 minutes, 25 seconds
Original Work: Don't Borrow Trouble by @wanderingjedihistorian
Clone Wars: Alpha-17 & Cody | Rating: T
Summary:
“I’ve read the early reports,” Cody said. “We were made for the Jedi, but so far it seems like many of them aren’t prepared to be generals.” Seventeen grimaced. He’d read the reports too, seen some action in the early battles before he was sent back to Kamino to start the ARC program. “They aren’t,” he admitted. “They’re trained to be peacekeepers, not soldiers. That’s why they need good commanders at their sides.” Looking away, Cody replied, “Assuming they listen.”

WIP Wednesday
Have a snippet from a dragon clones fic!
“You’re done,” Seventeen called firmly.
Everyone else had cleared out nearly an hour before, and were enjoying a bit of downtime before latemeal. Seventeen wasn’t willing to see Cody push himself too far too early, and burn out before the ARC program ended. Cody had it in him to be the best. He always had. But there were still times he needed Seventeen to remind him when it was time to stop. Seventeen could only hope that out there, in the war, there would be someone who could do that for Cody.
“I’m fine,” Cody insisted.
Seventeen folded his arms across his chest, unimpressed.
“You’re done,” he said again, tone hard.
Cody huffed out an angry sounding breath but stomped away from the obstacle course and came to stand in front of Seventeen.
“What’s your problem?” Seventeen demanded.
Not many people knew all Cody’s tells, but Seventeen sure as hells did. This wasn’t an angry Cody like he first thought. No, this was a Cody too far in his own head. The physical exertion was an attempt to silence the thoughts that plagued him. But Seventeen never got him to open up by being gentle. That was never what Cody wanted from him.
