Best crime and thrillers of 2023
Given this year’s headlines, it’s unsurprising that our appetite for cosy crime continues unabated, with the latest title in Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series, The Last Devil to Die (Viking), topping the bestseller lists. Janice Hallett’s novels The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels, which also features a group of amateur crime-solvers, and The Christmas Appeal (both Viper) have proved phenomenally popular, too.
Hallett’s books, which are constructed as dossiers – transcripts, emails, WhatsApp messages and the like – are part of a growing trend of experimentation with form, ranging from Cara Hunter’s intricate Murder in the Family (HarperCollins), which is structured around the making of a cold case documentary, to Gareth Rubin’s tête-bêche The Turnglass (Simon & Schuster). Books that hark back to the golden age of crime, such as Tom Mead’s splendidly tricksy locked-room mystery Death and the Conjuror (Head of Zeus), are also on the rise. The late Christopher Fowler, author of the wonderful Bryant & May detective series, who often lamented the sacrifice of inventiveness and fun on the altar of realism, would surely have approved. Word Monkey (Doubleday), published posthumously, is his funny and moving memoir of a life spent writing popular fiction.
Notable debuts include Callum McSorley’s Glaswegian gangland thriller Squeaky Clean (Pushkin Vertigo); Jo Callaghan’s In the Blink of an Eye (Simon & Schuster), a police procedural with an AI detective; Scorched Grace by Margot Douaihy (Pushkin Vertigo), featuring queer punk nun investigator Sister Holiday; and the caustically funny Thirty Days of Darkness (Orenda) by Jenny Lund Madsen (translated from the Danish by Megan E Turney).
There have been welcome additions to series, including a third book, Case Sensitive (Zaffre), for AK Turner’s forensic investigator Cassie Raven, and a second, The Wheel of Doll (Pushkin Vertigo), for Jonathan Ames’s LA private eye Happy Doll, who is shaping up to be the perfect hardboiled 21st-century hero.
Other must-reads for fans of American crime fiction include Ozark Dogs (Headline) by Eli Cranor, a powerful story of feuding Arkansas families; SA Cosby’s Virginia-set police procedural All the Sinners Bleed (Headline); Megan Abbott’s nightmarish Beware the Woman (Virago); and Rebecca Makkai’s foray into very dark academia, I Have Some Questions for You (Fleet). There are shades of James Ellroy in Jordan Harper’s Hollywood-set tour de force Everybody Knows (Faber), while Raymond Chandler’s hero Philip Marlowe gets a timely do-over from Scottish crime doyenne Denise Mina in The Second Murderer (Harvill Secker).
As Mick Herron observed in his Slow Horses origin novel, The Secret Hours (Baskerville), there’s a long list of spy novelists who have been pegged as the heir to John le Carré. Herron must be in pole position for principal legatee, but it’s been a good year for espionage generally: standout novels include Matthew Richardson’s The Scarlet Papers (Michael Joseph), John Lawton’s Moscow Exile (Grove Press) and Harriet Crawley’s The Translator (Bitter Lemon).
Historical crime has also been well served. Highlights include Emma Flint’s excellent Other Women (Picador), based on a real 1924 murder case; Laura Shepherd-Robinson’s story of a fortune teller’s quest for identity in Georgian high society, The Square of Sevens (Mantle); and SG MacLean’s tale of Restoration revenge and retribution, The Winter List (Quercus). There are echoes of Chester Himes in Viper’s Dream (No Exit) by Jake Lamar, which begins in 1930s Harlem, while Palace of Shadows (Mantle) by Ray Celestin, set in the late 19th century, takes the true story of American weapons heiress Sarah Winchester’s San Jose mansion and transports it to Yorkshire, with chillingly gothic results.
The latest novel in Vaseem Khan’s postcolonial India series, Death of a Lesser God (Hodder), is also well worth the read, as are Deepti Kapoor’s present-day organised crime saga Age of Vice (Fleet) and Parini Shroff’s darkly antic feminist revenge drama The Bandit Queens (Atlantic).
While psychological thrillers are thinner on the ground than in previous years, the quality remains high, with Liz Nugent’s complex and heartbreaking tale of abuse, Strange Sally Diamond (Penguin Sandycove), and Sarah Hilary’s disturbing portrait of a family in freefall, Black Thorn (Macmillan), being two of the best.
Penguin Modern Classics has revived its crime series, complete with iconic green livery, with works by Georges Simenon, Dorothy B Hughes and Ross MacDonald. There have been reissues by other publishers, too – forgotten gems including Celia Fremlin’s 1959 holiday‑from-hell novel, Uncle Paul (Faber), and Richard Wright’s The Man Who Lived Underground (Vintage). Finished in 1942 but only now published in its entirety, the latter is an account of an innocent man who takes refuge from racist police officers in the sewers of Chicago – part allegorical, part brutally realistic and, unfortunately, wholly topical.

May as well do version two of the musical challenge that @lets-dance-to-joy-division kindly tagged me on. Last night I did five (six really) fairly new to me songs that could evolve into obsessions (pretty sure I'm well on the way with at least three of them). Tonight it's going to be five acts that I've been playing a lot as of late, so I'm kindof obsessed with the band if not necessarily a single song. Again, I don't like to tag people on these things, but if you want to play, you really don't need my permission or anyone else's; just do it.
Five musical acts that Kitty's listening to a lot lately:
Aesthetic Perfection
This will come as no surprise to anyone who has payed attention to my musical posts. I have been absolutely obsessed with Aesthetic Perfection for a good year anyway, and this song has probably been my most obsessively played. I damn near died when I got to be within I can smell your sweat distance of Daniel Graves twice on their recent North American tour. His music has evolved over the years from harsher, angrier stuff with a more electro-industrial edge to what he now calls industrial pop. He does lots of interesting things musically and in his videos. He has the freedom to do so as he told his label to piss off some years ago and he's forging his way independently. He's very fan friendly, and having met him in Baltimore last October, he seems like a nice guy who'd be fun to talk to at length.
Papa Roach
Wait, what? This is nowhere near that synthy dark dancey stuff I posted before. Yep. I didn't like Papa Roach when I heard their first big single, Last Resort, back in the day and I still didn't like it about a year and a half ago when a good friend said that he liked PRoach. But for the last year or so I have LOVED much of their music, including Last Resort. I do actually like rock, but the thing with these guys as opposed to the cock rock and glam rock I grew up with is that Jacoby Shaddix writes and sings about emotions and feelings, not just sex, drugs, and rock and roll. And his lyrics are very catchy and singable in the privacy of my own car. The songs are musically interesting with good use of bass and drumplay that is often more complex than a simple beat. They've also added some synth and electronic elements in their more recent work. It was hard to pick just one song for them, I love so much of their work now. Papa Roach was my big band obsession before Aesthetic Perfection.
Linkin Park
Yes, another rock group, but to me they've always been so much more interesting than that. Mixing rap and singing, two vocalists, Joe Hahn's turntable work, and again with the personal, deeply emotional songs. Their first album Hybrid Theory might be my all-time favorite album, and if not, it's definitely in the top fucking three. Back in the day, at work we called Linkin Park our "angry music." I left them behind for awhile after their second effort Meteora but started to get back into them when I discovered Burn It Down in the mid-2010s (definitely my biggest LP obsession song). It wrecked me when Chester Bennington took his own life. If anyone bothers to throw a funeral for me when I die, I humbly request that two Linkin Park songs be played--One More Light (still cannot make it through that song without choking up) and Leave Out All the Rest.
Ashbury Heights
The first three obsession acts were obvious to me, the last two not so much, but going by my Last.fm stats, Ashbury Heights is my fourth most listened to act in the last year and a half or so. I had never heard of this Swedish duo until they came up for me on Last.fm. Their sound is varied and they've had at least three female singers during their run (I believe they are currently back with their original). I don't like everything, I tend to prefer their older stuff, but what I do like is fun, basically synthpop like this song Spiders. My most obsessive song though has been Spectres from the Black Moss, a catchy tune about a person with mental health issues and an unsupportive partner. The repeated use of the line "no sympathy" is the musical equivalent of fuck you and it is glorious.
God Module
God Module is a bit of a surprise for fifth place as I've only really started listening to more than a couple songs of theirs relatively recently. Their song Plastic was one of the ones I was considering for the final slot on last night's obsession list (and it definitely will become an obsession as I listen to it more). Again with them I don't love everything, but what I do love has a very different and interesting sound with a good beat and something funky going on with the synths. Something stompy I could dance to at the club. Lunacy was definitely an obsession song for me and inspired one of my mixes. Looking forward to digging in to more of their work.
Josie Pace
Bonus artist! I have to add Josie Pace as while my online stats don't reflect an obsession, I listen to her CD a lot in my car. She was one of the openers on Aesthetic Perfection's fall tour. I had never heard of her before and was impressed enough to buy the CD at the show (not typical for me). I swear she is better live than on the recordings. She brings such energy to her performances. Her best stuff isn't even on the CD. The song I wanted to put here hasn't been released yet. Also check out her cover of Pure Morning. She is also extremely sweet and is very happy to talk to you, give autographs, and do selfies. I hope she gets some new music out soon! (Oh and @lets-dance-to-joy-division, she's from the Detroit area.)

You will come to the Balthis House, just a few houses down. She rented out the home while living in a back building until her death. On the corner of Peyton and Chester Streets was home to Mary Fristoe, who bought the property after inheriting money. In 1888 Belle Boyd gave a detailed recounting of her deplorable Civil War exploits at the chapel. The Williams Chapel is the only remaining antebellum Front Royal Church. One last night in Mathew Lane home of the Cavern where drinks are always on the agenda rain set in so we elected to get some food and have an early night. Not going to happen with all bars and clubs packed for dining so headed off to the San Carlo an Italian restaurant that is second to none. I have to say the best Italian food and service I have every experienced. Guess it goes you get what you pay for. A great last night.
Hit the road early Monday and headed to Chester which surprise surprise was basically shut down as today the Queen is finally being put to rest. Did get to go inside the Chester Cathedral though which is stunning even with the televisions all around so people can gather to mourn the occasion. We also got to walk the old Roman wall which surrounds the old town. This is still standing in full usage and one can only imagine just how far of their time they were.
Did not go the Llangollen as planned due to the fact that all tourism was shut down driving east to Conwy where we did the worlds smallest house this is where a gent over six foot tall lived, and a fore shore walk. Did the main street and a pub had opened to honour the queen and those so inclined could sit and watch the five hour procession while enjoying a drink and play one of the two poker machines inside. Rhondda, Julie and Lindsay took the opportunity while Allan kept himself amused.
Ceremony completed we drove back and up the coast of Wales to a seaside resort known as Llandudno Bay where the old television show “Faulty Towers” could have been based upon. Serious it was driving into a time warp. The local council had elected to cover the sand beach with stones to stop people walking along it. They then had filled in the top part of beach with a ten metre wide walk way to stop beach visitors walking on the side walk. Could not find a pub but every motel/motel has its own which charged very expensive prices.
It was here that when you watched television instead of watching advertisements the television went blank in memory of the queens final resting day. The shows fully operative for first time in ten days but without advertisements. Do not understand why the shows did just not run without continual blank screens. Only in Britain.
Slow start as headed off to Ireland. Stopped off at Conwy Castle which is well worth the visit. Like Chester the wall was built to last. From here a quick whistle stop at the Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Train Station. The gift shop is larger then the station itself. Hahaha
Finally to Holyhead where we took the four hour ferry to Dublin where we quickly moved towards Meath where we stayed for the night at the Daly Inn pub and even better food and service from very friendly staff.
From here Tom Tom again took over and we drove the longest roads through more narrow laneways towards the Giants Causeway. This place requires a long walk but worth the effort to see and walk. Back in the car we drove a few short miles to the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. A much longer walk to get to but for those brave enough to use the rope bridge dangling in the air 100 feet above the water. Allan volunteered to be the photographer and stay on the main land side.
Still trying to fill in the drive we drove through to Dark Hedges a former pathway leading to an estate. Was lovely but you are no longer allowed to drive through the walking was taking its toll. The drive into Belfast quicker without Tom Tom in control we us having drinks in our room supported by Subway.
Our only full day here in Belfast we decided to do the “hop on bus hop off” tour and not sorry we did. First stop the Titanic Museum which covers so much with a mechanical experience involved along with some great imaging and stories followed by an actual Titanic support ship. A must must do. Could have spent the day there.
Sadly we joined the bus again and did the tour of the city and visited the famous murals. The tour guide explained so much about the different murals and while one can never understand why the fact that they are at peace now is great.
Tonight we are off to the “Crown” hotel legendary for its architecture and decoy where we will enjoy a drink as the millionaires of the past Belfast lifestyle did. Should be great.

Fading Lights, the Final Page, and the Last Domino
Tumblr media
It is the night of December 2nd, 2021. I find myself sitting in the lower level of the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA, witnessing something I never thought I would have ever gotten the chance to see: Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks, turning it on again and playing as Genesis for what looks to be the final time as part of their The Last Domino? reunion tour. The band is reliving their glory years and busting out many old fan favorites. The beginning instrumental of "Behind the Lines", "Turn It On Again", "Mama", "Land of Confusion", and so much more. I am enjoying the show immensely. I am ecstatic and beyond excited when the band launches into "Home By the Sea." It sounds and looks exactly the way I dreamt hearing and seeing it live would be like. The song ends. Like a schoolboy staring at the clock in anticipation for the ringing of the final bell of the day, I wait with equal anticipation for what comes next. The supporting band members leave the stage and only Phil, Mike, and Tony remain. The lights are turned down low, a dark midnight blue covers the stage. Then, I hear it. That familiar little drum machine pattern that was first played live twenty-nine years ago.
They begin playing the song "Fading Lights," the final song off of the final album (We Can't Dance) they made together back in 1991. I stand completely awestruck. I stand with my jaw to the floor, having had no idea that they had decided to bring this song back for this tour. It is a very pleasant surprise and, little did I know, it would not be the only surprise in store for that night.
Flashback. It is Summer 1992. Genesis have embarked on the We Can't Dance tour in support of the album of the same name. "Fading Lights" was a song that never left the setlist for that tour, being played a total of sixty-nine times during the North American and UK legs of the tour. During that year, Phil, Mike, and Tony are still in their early forties. Phil stands in the center of the stage and delivers one of the most haunting and wistful performances of his career. Mike is out of sight but his gentle guitar playing can easily be heard. Tony sits and provides the mood with an equally haunting and wistful keyboard to accompany Phil, complete with the same stone-faced, concentrating expression Tony has had for his entire career. After the first two verses are done, Phil moves to his drum kit and joins the other two. Here, it is a rare performance of the trio playing together. Touring guitarist/bassist Daryl Stuermer is not there and neither is touring drummer Chester Thompson. For roughly five minutes, it is only the three of them playing together. Three men, three band members, three friends, playing live the music they created for the masses inside the confines of a recording studio. During these moments, time means nothing. There is only the bliss that comes with both making and enjoying music with the ones that you hold dear to you. In these moments, nobody ever thinks about the ending. Only the current moment exists.
Tumblr media
(From left to right: Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins, and Tony Banks performing during the We Can’t Dance Tour in 1992)
Flash forward. It is late Fall 2021. Genesis have embarked on a second reunion tour, "The Last Domino?." "Fading Lights" is a song that is on the setlist for every show on this tour. Now, Phil, Mike, and Tony have entered their early seventies. Phil, after years of physical health issues (most notably, a spine injury he suffered back in 2007 that damaged vertebrae in his upper neck) has to be seated during all performances. He is no longer the drummer of Genesis, instead only the now frail looking and dilapidated singer. Mike and Tony are luckier, looking more or less the same, just with a bit more grey and a few more wrinkles. They provide the instrumental here the same as they did all those years ago, as if nothing had changed. As if no time had truly passed at all.
Tumblr media
(From left to right: Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks performing “Fading Lights” on The Last Domino? Tour, 2021)
Despite Phil's weakened physical state, the vocal performance is still just as haunting and wistful as when he first performed it all those years ago, however, it is different now. There is a certain sadness that comes with hearing and seeing Phil in his current state. The difference between now and then is rather obvious: Phil sounds his age (seventy.) The voice is weak and strained, he cannot hold notes nearly the same way that he used to, his phrasing is rather odd in some spots. In any other situation, one would feel depressed having to see someone up on that stage that clearly cannot handle the wear and tear of it anymore.
Then again, Genesis were never like other bands.
On a tour that is very obviously a final curtain call for them, "Fading Lights" becomes much more than what it was when it was first performed in 1992. Here, it becomes a stand-out song that gains a certain magical quality to it, a song that becomes more special and only gains more meaning as we, the concert-goers, witness it. At the beginning of the song, Phil laments, "Oh, if only we could do it all again." A cute and nostalgic wish in 1992, but charged with so much more now in 2021. Phil goes on: "But now it's just another fading memory / Out of focus, though the outline still remains." There is a certain melancholy to Phil's performance here. The way he moves the microphone away from his mouth after holding a note causes his voice to fade, much like the memory he is speaking of.
In a way, what we are looking at here is a band who are now fading in more ways than one. Taking one look at Phil's current state is enough of an indicator. Another indicator is that the music of Genesis now exists more in the past-tense. Their story has been written and now all we can really do is look backwards. "Like the story that we wish was never ending / We know some time we must reach the final page," Phil sings, a sentiment that both he and the audience are definitely fully aware of. And what is this final tour if not a perfect representation of the next lines, "Still we carry on just pretending / That there'll always be one more day to go"?
The band forgo performing the entire song, which clocks in at 10:28 on the album, so we sadly do not hear the final verse of the song. Perhaps the final verse was too difficult to face. It reads:
"Another chance hello, another goodbye
And so many things we'll never see again
Days of lives that seem so unimportant
They seem to matter and to count much later on"
It is difficult to face the end of something. The end of a relationship, the end of a job, the end of living in a certain place at a certain time, but perhaps the hardest to face is the end of a life. Nobody ever thinks about their story while it is being written, it is only when we stop and look back that we realize everything and realize, almost too late, that which is fading and coming to an end. We think about the highs, the lows, the chances taken and the chances denied. The things we are proud of and the things we regret and wish we could change, whether you are up on the stage playing in a band or a member of the audience, we all stand united with those universal experiences.
Phil, Mike, and Tony end the song after the repeat of the line, "And you know that these are the days of our lives so remember." "Remember" is a keyword, because after this, the band launches into two of the most memorable and beloved moments of their past: the instrumental section of "The Cinema Show", the end of "...In That Quiet Earth," and then smack the audience into the euphoria that is "Afterglow." This, along with the rest of the show, is complete bliss.
"Fading Lights," to me, becomes one of the most memorable moments of that night at the Wells Fargo Center. The chance to see these titans of music in the flesh while they are still here is something that I will hold on my heart as I leave and return home, back to my regular life. However, in those moments when I am with Genesis in that arena hearing that song, nothing else matters. The world disappears and I am consumed in the fullness of that distinct moment. The music of Genesis has filled my life with beauty, wonder, delight, magic, love, excitement, and all other emotions that make great music come alive and stick with someone for a lifetime. I look at Phil Collins and see a man that is battered and hurting, but I find that I am able to smile because I can take comfort in the fact that he is still here. He is alive. He carries on the best that he can, living and providing the magic one final time. For both himself and for me. For my own part, I am one single person in a sea of adoring fans that add my claps into the wild applause and I, along with many others, give him a standing ovation later on in the show when he is the last band member introduced. In that moment I find there is nothing but love of the purest form in that arena and for two and a half hours we are all one, simply happy and enjoying the fact that we are here and that we are blessed enough to be able to take comfort in these moments in time.
Life, as it always does, goes on. Memories of the past find themselves fading. What else is fading? Stars? Headlights? Souls? Suns? Hell, all lights are on their way towards fading, but if we are lucky enough, we may find there are some moments that remain with us and that stand the test of time, never to be forgotten and are able to be carried along with us always.
As I leave the show to head home, I take a final look back at the arena. I look down at the little domino keychain in my hand that I bought at the merch stand, a physical memento of a night that has meant the world to me. I think to myself that it was an honor to be there. It really was. All that is left to say is this: Thank you Genesis. For all of it. The lights may be fading as the last domino falls, but the music and the memories of these nights will carry on and last forever. All things must eventually reach their end, so the saying goes. The band knows this and have said it themselves in song: “It’s always the same, it’s just a shame, and...
That’s all.“

Oh hey gal pal!! 💛 Absolutely. Crackalacking. Thanks for even asking. Now, because I know how much you love Tulip, I’m going with the chapter Keys. Again, it’s long, we will go through a whistle-stop tour of the highlights. (Amendment: It wasn’t whistle-stop. This is LONG. I’m so sorry. Feel free not to finish this.)
First, I’m starting with the chapter title, because I am still proud of myself for this 😂 I decided pretty much straight away that dismantling Tulip’s dungbomb was a pretty stupid task, and that it would take more than just this to persuade her. I replaced it with the frog choir TLSQ, to try and get that into the storyline in a realistic way. Keys relates to the keys to Tulip’s padlock, and musical keys. We’ll come onto those later.
“I like her. She’s a right laugh,” said Tonks, as the girls carried their Puffapods through the greenhouses in their first Herbology lesson of January. “She let me colour her hair last summer and she lent me a dungbomb after Filch confiscated all my Zonko’s goodies.”
I love the friendship between Tonks and Tulip. They are the living embodiment of chaos. I loved the idea of Tulip’s hair not being naturally the bright red colour we see in canon. It makes sense, because it’s not a natural looking shade of red, especially with her being of Japanese descent, and because of her character. She’s a teenage girl rebelling against strict parents - of course she’s going to dye her hair the most obnoxiously bright colour she could think of. It also let me have a little red herring in year 2 - the dark haired girl Artemis sees talking to Merula in Chapter 7 is Tulip, before she dyed her hair. And why have Tonks do it? The idea of Tonks dyeing Tulip’s hair is just hilarious to me for some reason, that’s why.
“I just do. I’d never really thought about why,” Barnaby said, and he tilted his head to one side like a puppy. “But she did say if I helped her find the Cursed Vaults before you she’d make me the most powerful wizard at Hogwarts.”
“And you believed that?” Rowan raised her eyebrows.
“Well,” Barnaby looked confused again. “Why would she lie?”
“Because she wants you to make her look more powerful,” Rowan replied. “Because you’re muscly and good at duelling.”
“You think I’m muscly?” Barnaby smiled and looked at his upper arms as if he’d never seen them before.
I read somewhere ages ago that assigning an animal to a character helps with characterisation. Artemis is a cat. Everything she does is catlike. It started as foreshadowing of her Animagus form, but actually it ended up becoming engrained in her character. Barnaby is a puppy. Specifically a big chunky Labrador puppy. I also base his character on Joey from friends, but I also think if Joey from friends as a Labrador puppy, to the point that if I ever get a Labrador, it’ll be called Joey. Anyway, I digress. The line about Barnaby’s arms made me snigger as I wrote it.
“Chester Davies, he’s a seventh year Ravenclaw prefect. He’s in the Frog Choir and the school orchestra, too. He’s a pianist.”
“He’s a what, now?”
“A pianist, Artemis,” said Rowan, tutting and rolling her eyes as Tonks began to snigger loudly. “As in someone who plays the piano. Honestly...”
Penis jokes will never not be funny.
“You must be Artemis,” he said, holding out his hand for Artemis to shake, which she did. He was tall, as tall as Bill, with high cheekbones, and dark hair and eyes, and a serious and slightly tired looking face. “I’m Chester. Penny Haywood said you’re auditioning for the spare spot in the Frog Choir this evening.”
“That’s right,” said Artemis, taking her hand back from him. It felt warmer than it had before.
Chester Davies is a hottie. Don’t @ me, okay. I just love me a man with a piano. Judging by Artemis’ reaction to that handshake, so does she.
“No, we just need to change the key for you, that’s all,” he moved his hands down the piano keyboard, and played the same melody on a different set of keys. This time it sounded deeper, darker. “Can you sing it down here?”
Aha. The various meanings of keys! Like I said, I’m super proud of this connection. And I love one word names for chapters, they just have something so powerful about them. As for Artemis’ voice, I’ve said it before that her voice claim is my fourteen year old niece. Her voice is really soulful and beautiful, but not the classic Disney princess voice that girls assume they should have. It suits Artemis down to the ground.
Artemis watched, transfixed, her eyes following his hands in the same way that Fergus’ eyes might follow spots of light moving on the floor, as his fingertips danced on the keys, making each one sing out a different note. Forget spells, or potions, or flying; this was magic.
There she is, being a cat. And there are those keys again. Really, though, this just showcases her love of music.
“There was a Muggle who used to live on a boat behind my house. Reggie. He had all these big circle things called records, and he used to play them for me. Jacob had some records, too, and our Grandma, when I was little. She was a Muggle, too.”
“Could she sing?”
“Yes, it was her job.”
Reggieeeeeee!!!! I’m referencing him here because I don’t want people to forget about him. He’s going to come back one day, because I love him. Probably not until year 7, but I might be able to fit him into year 6. I’m not sure yet. But either way, he’ll be back. And there might be a surprise. As for Artemis’ grandmother Mavis, she was always written to be a Muggle. I’d already published this before I came up with Ophelia, so she became a Squib instead. But, it’s not relevant here. Mavis lived as a Muggle, she never revealed her Squib identity, even to her granddaughter. There’s a lot the Hexleys keep to themselves, really. As for Mavis’ fate, she got senile in her old age and lived in an old people’s home. Artemis visited her a lot when she was young. She passed away sometime between Leander’s mysterious death in the Department of Mysteries and Jacob’s disappearance. God, those Hexleys aren’t a lucky bunch, are they?
“She used to sing that song to me,” she said quietly, still not looking at Artemis, “the one you sang for your audition. She used to say it was my song, just for me.”
I never name the song Artemis sings for her audition, but this is the clue to what it is. If you didn’t know, Merula is the Latin word for blackbird. The song “Blackbird” by the Beatles is really special to me, because I sang it myself at my friend’s wedding while they signed the register. (Disclaimer - I’m not a brilliant singer, we’d just finished university and they were on a really tight budget) It’s also links to a recurring theme in my writing of love and freedom. I’m a Pullman girl, through and through - what Percy Jackson is to you, His Dark Materials is to me. Seriously, half my work is plagiarised from HDM, including Artemis’ face.
“That was really kind,” she said. “Maybe Tonks is right to trust you, after all. I’ll give you my key. And I’ll help you get the other key off Merula.”
Tulip is a bit of a softie at heart. And this is why I think the frog choir task makes more sense in this storyline than the dungbomb. Tulip’s best friend was Merula before they fell out. It’s no wonder she wants to test Artemis and see if she can trust her - Merula would have told her all about how awful that Hexley is! This moment is Tulip coming to realise that she made the wrong choice of friend in Merula, and that she deserves friends that appreciate her for who she is, something that develops in the next chapter when she encounters her Boggart.

Singing Songs That Make You Slit Your Wrists
Pairing: Frank Iero x Reader
Genre: Angst, Hurt/Comfort
Summary: Written for Gothtober 2020, Day 8: “From Inside”.
Linkin Park invites you, and the other members of My Chemical Romance, to join them on the Projekt Revolution Tour. But, when their song, reduces Frank to tears, you realize that something is wrong. He confides in you, about his heartbreak.
You sat in the dressing room, at the back of the venue, feeling sweaty and exhausted, but good. You and the guys had played a killer set tonight. The fans had loved it.
“Where’s Frank?” you asked, sipping on your water bottle.
“I think he went to go watch Linkin Park’s set,” Ray replied, wiping his face on a towel.
“Oh, okay,” you nodded. “I might go watch them play, too.”
Linkin Park were the headliners on this tour, so their set came after yours. They were a really talented band. You were honored that they had asked My Chemical Romance, to open for them. They were really great guys to hang out with, too.
You left the dressing room, and began walking towards the stage. You found Frank, just behind the curtain. Beyond the back of his head, you could see the band rocking out. They were facing the crowd, so their backs were to you. But, Mike and Chester’s voices, still reverberated off the walls. You could hear, that they were in the middle of a song off their second album - “From The Inside”:
Trying not to break, but I’m so tired of this deceit
Every time I try to make myself get back up on my feet
All I ever think about is this, all the tiring time between
And how trying to put my trust in you, just takes so much out of me
Take everything from the inside, and throw it all away
‘Cause I swear, for the last time, I won’t trust myself with you
I won’t waste myself on you!
As the instrumentals kicked in, Frank punched the wall. The drywall crumbled under his fist.
“Hey!” you gasped. “What are you doing?”
“Y-Y/N?!”
Frank’s head whipped around, when he heard the sound of your voice. When he turned to you, you saw that his face was streaked with tears.
“Frank?” you blinked. “What’s wrong?”  There’s no way that he’s getting so emotional, just because of the song….
“Nothing’s wrong!” Frank insisted, wiping his eyes on his sleeve. “Just...go away!”
“I won’t go away!” you insisted. “You’re not the type, to get all weepy for no reason. Tell me what’s going on.”
“She deceived me, Y/N.” Frank rambled. “I can’t trust her...all my love was totally wasted on her.”
“Who are you talking about?” you asked gently, putting a supportive hand on his shoulder.
“My girlfriend,” Frank explained. “She’s cheating on me.”
“Oh my god,” you gaped, “are you serious? How do you know?”
“I...I just found out, tonight,” Frank stammered, beginning to cry again. “I left the dressing room, because I didn’t want you guys to see me like this. But, the song just made me feel even worse….”
“Sssh, it’s okay,” you soothed him, pulling him into a hug. He buried his head in your shoulder.  “Frankie, you’ve got eyeliner all over your face. Let me take you back to the dressing room, and get you cleaned up, okay?”
“....O-Okay,” Frank sniffled, his voice muffled against your jacket.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
“....Where did the others go?” Frank wondered, as you reentered the back room.
“I think they said, they were going to go hang out with Mindless Self Indulgence,” you recalled. You grabbed your box of makeup wipes, off the vanity. “Will you come here, please?”
Frank walked over, and sat on the stool, by the mirror. You grabbed a wipe out of the pack, and gently began to wipe at his face. The black tire tracks were all over his cheeks. How long was he crying, you wondered, before I found him out there?
“I look like shit,” Frank said glumly. “I’m pathetic…”
“You’re not pathetic,” you assured him, wiping the last of the makeup away. “Look - you’re all better now.”
“Thanks,” Frank sighed. “I’m glad it was you, at least, who caught me crying like a girl, and not Gerard, or Ray.”
“I doubt that they would have made fun of you for it,” you pointed out.
“I know they wouldn’t,” Frank shrugged. “But….fuck, Y/N. I’m a mess.”
You pulled him into another hug, and he just sat there for a second, clinging to you for comfort. He smelled like sweat and cigarette smoke. That shouldn’t have been an attractive combination - but, you found yourself inhaling it deeply.
“....You know my friend Shaun, right?” Frank said, pulling away at last.
“Yeah,” you nodded. “He’s from the same hometown as you, right?”
“Right,” Frank explained. “So, I got a text from him, right when we came offstage, earlier. He went to the drive-in movie theater, in Newark, tonight, to see the new Halloween remake.”
“And, then what happened?” you asked.
“He looked at the next car over,” Frank went on, “and that’s when he saw her! He sent me a picture.”
Frank fumbled in his pocket, for his cell phone. He flipped it open, and held it up to you, so you could view Shaun’s picture message. The image was grainy, but you could clearly make out the face of Frank’s girlfriend. She was passionately kissing a man in the passenger’s seat.
“Oh my god!” your eyes widened, as you stared at the evidence. “Who the hell is he?”
“I don’t know,” Frank said miserably, “but he sure as hell ain’t me.”
“So, she’s macking on some other guy, while you’re away, on tour?!” you realized. “Frank….I’m so sorry….”
“How could she do this to me?” Frank sobbed. “Why wasn’t I good enough for her?”
“Hey, hey - you’re good enough,” you assured him, holding him again. “She’s the one, who doesn’t deserve you.”
Frank jerked away from you, grabbing for his phone again.
“.....Should I call her?” he asked hesitantly. “Should I tell her that I know what she did?”
“Yeah, I think you should confront her about it directly,” you advised. “I mean, it’s clear as day.”
“This is the type of conversation that I would prefer to have face to face,” Frank frowned.
“Yeah, but we won’t be home for another two weeks,” you reminded him. “You can’t just ignore it, until then.”
“The tour was almost over, damnit,” Frank swore. “I….I was really looking forward to seeing her when I got back, and spending more time with her. Now...it’s like, I’m not sure, if I ever want to see her again.”
“Then, tell her that,” you urged him. “I’ll be right here, by your side, okay?”
“Thanks, Y/N,” Frank said softly, taking your hand, as he dialed her number. You gave his hand a reassuring squeeze, as the phone rang.
“Hi, Frankie!” said an oblivious voice, when she picked up. “How are you, baby?”
“Don’t baby me,” Frank snapped. “I know what you did!”
“What are you talking about, sweetie?” the whore asked innocently.
“Shaun saw you at the movies, you two-timing trash!” Frank scowled. “How….how could you?!”
“Oh, yeah, I went to the movies, with my cousin,” she lied.
“Oh, really?” Frank scoffed. “You like to stick your tongue in your cousin’s mouth?”
“Shaun needs to learn that snitches get stitches!” she snapped. “Fine, he ain’t my cousin. But, he didn’t mean anything to me, Frankie, honest. You’re my number one.”
“If I’m not your one and only, I don’t want to be jack shit to you!” Frank cried.
“What, so, you’re breaking up with me?” his girlfriend asked. “Come on….please forgive me, baby! I swear it won’t happen again!”
“Yeah, it will,” Frank said miserably. “People like you never change....I thought I could trust you. But, this is what you do, behind my back?!”
“Well, maybe you shouldn’t go disappearing, for months at a time, then!” the girlfriend screamed back at him. “A girl’s got needs!”
“All I need,” Frank growled, “is for you to lose my number - you and I are through!”
He hurled at the phone at the wall, in a fit of rage. The screen shattered, when it made impact with the cement.
“Fuck!” Frank cried. “Fuck, I’m so stupid!”
“It’s okay,” you said quickly, “Screens are easy to fix.  We can probably take it to a repair shop tomorrow, before we get back on the tour bus, and move on to the next city. Or, we could just get you a whole new phone…”
“I don’t care about the phone,” Frank said, sinking to the floor. “Just..leave it.”
“Are you sure?” you asked, already handing it back to him.
“Yeah, just set it down,” Frank said, putting his head in his hands. “I….I’m stupid, for trusting her. I thought she really loved me.”
You put the phone on the counter, and sat down beside him.
“Frank, I’m so sorry that she did this to you,” you said sincerely, putting an arm around him. “You don’t deserve it.”
“What if I do, though?” he said sadly, letting his head slump against your shoulder. “I mean, she’s right. I’m never at home.”
“She knew what you did for a living, when she decided to date you,” you reminded him. “You’re a musician. You’re going to tour a lot. There’s nothing that you can do about that.”
“But, when I was home, I was good to her,” Frank sniffled. “I worked so hard, to show her that I cared. When the album went platinum, I even bought her a car.”
“And she chose to screw some other guy, in the backseat?” you spat, revolted. “She really is a whore, Frank. She was probably just after your money, in the first place.”
“.....You don’t think she ever loved me, at all?” Frank asked. The thought seemed to make him even more depressed. Tears began to well up in his eyes again.
“...Fuck,” you swore, realizing you’d inadvertently twisted the knife. “Fuck, Frank, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.”
He started wiping his eyes on his sleeves again.
“Here,” you offered, pulling a handkerchief from your pocket. “Use this instead.”
“....Thanks, Y/N,” Frank said, taking it, and blowing his nose. “Thank you for being here for me, for that….breakup call. Fuck….it’s really over…..”
“It is,” you nodded, “But, that’s probably for the best. You don’t want to be, with a person who treats you that way.”
Without warning. Frank dove into your lap, burying his face into your shirt, as he began to cry harder. You held him tight, and gently stroked his dark hair.
“.....What if nobody else ever wants me?” he sobbed. “Why aren’t I lovable?”
“You’re lovable,” you whispered into his ear. “Frankie, any girl would be lucky to have you!”
The truth was, you’d had a crush on him, for the longest time. But, you knew he was already taken, so you’d never acted on these feelings.  You told yourself, you were fine just being friends. Secretly, you’d been so jealous of his girlfriend...but, you thought he was happy with her. You didn’t want to mess that up for him.
But, tonight, you considered, she messed it up, all on her own. Now..he’s a single man….
“You’re just saying that to make me feel better, Y/N,” Frank frowned. “The truth is….I’m nothing special.”
“That’s not true at all!” you insisted. “You’re an amazingly talented guitarist….you’re a kind person, and you’re fun to be around. You’re honest, and loyal, and….and, god, you’re so handsome….”
“I’m handsome?” Frank repeated. He picked his head up, and looked you in the eyes.
“Yeah,” you nodded, blushing. “Your hair looks so good, since you started growing it out. And I love the tank top you wore onstage tonight….it shows off the tattoos, on those muscley arms. When you started licking the microphone….I swear to god, I almost dropped my sticks.”
“Really?” Frank chuckled. It was the first time that you had seen him smile, all evening. “You thought it was sexy?”
“Yeah….,” you breathed. “I think you’re sexy, Frank. I always have. If I had you….I would never dream of kissing anyone else.”
“Then, have me,” Frank whispered. He leaned in, and closed the distance between you. You tasted the salt, of the tears, on his lips. And yet, the kiss was so sweet.
You pulled him closer, deepening the kiss, and winding your fingers into his hair. Was this real?
He pulled away after a moment, gasping for breath.
“Promise me,” he panted. “Promise me, you’ll never hurt me, like she did. Promise me you’ll always be true.”
“I promise,” you vowed. “Frankie, I’ve wanted you forever….I’ll be yours ‘til the end.”
This was exactly what he needed to hear. He crashed into you again, harder this time. You kissed him, and kissed him, until your lips felt sore. You would show him exactly how loved he was - even if took you all night long.

Note
First, thank you SO MUCH for all the fic recs you’ve been blessing us with! I really appreciate all the time and effort you’ve put into making these. Second, could you recommend some historical AUs? Thank you and I hope you have a lovely day :D
Thank you so much for the kind words anon. It’s so good to hear that you guys like these recs. I really enjoy creating these lists and finding fics that are both well-loved but also those who are underrated in the fandom.
I have a LOT of historical AU fics so I hope there are some you haven’t read before. The fics are, more or less, in chronological order, so it starts with Ancient Rome, moves on to the Middle Ages, then to Regency era, etc. etc. This should make it a tad easier to find fics from different eras. Enjoy!

Little does he expect to find new friends, new challenges, a budding attraction both emotionally and physically. Not to mention an enemy with far more nefarious and sinister plans than he could have ever imagined.
Erik Lehnsherr is set with a good business, a manor and grounds, staff and acquaintances he can lean on if needed. However, having tracked down and killed the man who killed his parents, he feels adrift, wondering if this is where he’s supposed to end his life; a respectable man with a respectable business.
Dragging a drowning Englishman out of the river starts him down an entirely unforeseen, but not necessarily, unwelcome path.

Lock Down Fest Masterpost PART I (20-30 March)
1917
feed me just enough that i’ll never need a cage by Cunninglinguist. (E) 7.4k,  Tom Blake/William Schofield. “Come on.” Sco stops walking, runs a hand over the faintest marking on a tree trunk. “It’s just a little farther now.” “I’m coming.” Tom huffs a sigh, yanking his shotgun strap over his shoulder so the barrel lands in his hands. They’ve been on the road for nearly a week now, an unfortunate consequence of their last shelter getting swarmed by an army of dead ones. Though skinning rabbits to eat over hastily made fires and taking turns sleeping against trees, spending the days and nights consumed with fear, and jumping each time a stick cracked were hardly desirable circumstances, it certainly wasn’t their longest or harshest stint on the run. They had endured worse, by far, and Tom had no doubt that this particular stretch of time would come to an end when Sco said it would. He knows the way, he always knows the way. Plus, Tom wouldn’t want to spend this time with anyone else in the entire world.
If The World Was Ending by RisingShadows. (not rated) 3.7k, Tom Blake/William Schofield.  When a dangerous virus begins spreading across the country William Schofield and Tom Blake quickly find themselves the last two standing of the team working in their lab.

Kevin disregards the emotional caption and instead checks the date. 18 March, the night he-  (The night he thought he had a hallucination.)

BOKU NO HERO ACADEMIA
Tell me it won’t always be this hard by Graendal. (T) 4.3k, Midoriya Izuku/Todoroki Shouto. He’d met Midoriya a few months ago during a field trip to the library. The kids had adored him, of course, even the ones who were usually shy about participating in new activities. Midoriya had a way of projecting a sense of all-encompassing safety and comfort with just his smile.Shouto had adored him too, maybe, even back then. A silly crush that had only grown during every subsequent field trip — which is truly absurd, considering the vast majority of their interactions at the time consisted of occasional eye contact while singing children’s songs. But now that they’ve spent hours talking almost every day for the past few weeks… calling it a silly crush might be an understatement. The idea that he’s actually been able to help Midoriya through this is inordinately pleasing. If there’s a silver lining to this at all — for him personally, at least — it’s that he’d seen Midoriya’s post requesting a virtual board game buddy. And that Midoriya is a patient enough person to teach Shouto how to play everything from scratch. He’d actually seemed excited at the opportunity.Maybe the opportunity for any sort of ongoing social interaction is worthy of excitement. These are strange times.

He interrupts whatever rant Patrick had prepared that starts with 'you idiot' by tucking his frozen nose into Patrick's neck and sucking the warm air coming from Patrick's skin into greedy lungs, and grins even wider when Patrick yelps, offended as he always is by a breach of his personal space.

Heidi was my favorite part of the show. There were some very funny parts to the show, especially if you are a theater buff. There are about 10 mins of total blackouts, which is mostly a chunk in within the first 13 minutes. Depsite that, a nice capture and the audience was very into the show. A- To Kill a Mockingbird - Broadway - July, 2019 (Hollis Mizner's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Jeff Daniels (Atticus Finch), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Scout), Will Pullen (Jem), Manoel Felciano (Horace Gilmer), LaTonya Richardson Jackson (Calpurnia), Aubie Merrylees (u/s Dill), Dakin Matthews (Judge Taylor), Gbenga Akinnagbe (Tom Robinson), Frederick Weller (Bob Ewell), Danny Wolohan (Boo Radley), Erin Wilhelmi (Mayella), Neal Huff (Link Deas), Liv Roth (Miss Stephanie), Phyllis Somerville (Ms. Dubose) NOTES: Very shaky video, never really settles down. Filmed nearly entirely through close-ups, which means a fair bit of the action is missed. Tootsie - Broadway - December, 2019 (theaterfan64's master) FORMAT:  MOV (HD) CAST: Santino Fontana (Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels), Lilli Cooper (Julie Nichols), Andy Grotelueschen (Jeff Slater), Sarah Stiles (Sandy Lester), John Behlmann (Max Van Horn), Julie Halston (Rita Marshall), Reg Rogers (Ron Carlisle), Michael McGrath (Stan Fields), Britney Coleman NOTES: Full stage shot of the show during it’s run on Broadway. There is washout, as it’s a full stage shot, but it is very very watchable. About 8 minutes is missing right before the Act 1 finale. Tootsie - Pre-Broadway / Chicago - September 11, 2018 (Preview) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Santino Fontana (Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels), Lilli Cooper (Julie Nichols), Andy Grotelueschen (Jeff Slater), Sarah Stiles (Sandy Lester), John Behlmann (Max Van Horn), Julie Halston (Rita Marshall), Reg Rogers (Ron Carlisle), Michael McGrath (Stan Fields), Anthony Wayne, Britney Coleman, Diana Vaden, Drew King, Harris Milgrim, James Moye, Jeff Kready, John Arthur Greene, Katerina Papacostas, Leslie Donna Flesner, Paula Leggett Chase, Shina Ann Morris NOTES: Excellent HD capture of the first PreBroadway preview performance. This is a fun show with terrific performances based on the 1982 movie. Santino gives a wonderful performance and earning early Tony buzz for Best Actor! Many changes and direction from the out of town tryout. A Tuck Everlasting - Broadway - April 4, 2016 (Preview) (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT:  DVD ISO (SD) CAST: Sarah Charles Lewis (Winnie Foster), Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Jesse Tuck), Carolee Carmello (Mae Tuck), Michael Park (Angus Tuck), Robert Lenzi (Miles Tuck), Terrence Mann (Man in Yellow Suit), Michael Wartella (Hugo), Fred Applegate (Constable Joe), Pippa Pearthree (Nana), Valerie Wright (Mother) NOTES: A more rare recording of the same performance as a more common capture. This was Carolee's final performance due to leaving for Finding Neverland. Wonderful show, performances and music! A+ Tuck Everlasting - Pre-Broadway / Atlanta - February 6, 2015 (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Sarah Charles Lewis (Winnie Foster), Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Jesse Tuck), Beth Leavel (Mae Tuck), Michael Park (Angus Tuck), Robert Lenzi (Miles Tuck), Terrence Mann (Man in Yellow Suit), Michael Wartella (Hugo), Fred Applegate (Constable Joe), Pippa Pearthree (Nana), Valerie Wright (Mother) NOTES: Beautiful capture of the Pre-Broadway tryout in Atlanta. This was Beth Leavel's first performance taking over for Carolee in the final few weeks of the run. Great performances and music! A+

The Mystery of Charles Dickens by AN Wilson review – a great writer's dark side
Was Dickens’s fiction shaped by the nastiness he never consciously acknowledged? A sprightly retelling of a well-known narrative
Near the end of The Mystery of Charles Dickens, AN Wilson quotes at length from a letter written by Philip Larkin to his lover Monica Jones. The poet has just reread Great Expectations, and is reflecting on the novelist’s attention-seeking tricks: “Say what you like about Dickens as an entertainer, he cannot be considered a real writer at all; not a real novelist.” It is a version of a complaint that has been made many times about Dickens the mere “entertainer”. “His is the garish, gaslit, melodramatic barn … where the yokels gape.” Yet, at the end of all his sentences of critical deprecation, Larkin’s final reflex is equally familiar: “However, I much enjoyed G.E. & may try another soon.”
Those with high literary standards have often enjoyed Dickens against their better judgment. In The Mystery of Charles Dickens, Wilson sides with the gaping yokels. He confesses the he has read Dickens with “obsessive rapture” since his childhood, but had to overcome the presumption, later educated into him, that his writing was insufficiently deep or sophisticated. “The death of Paul Dombey is so schmaltzy that we simply refuse to be moved, but then, damn it, we read and the tears well down our cheeks.” For Wilson, Dickens is an irresistible performer. One chapter of his book is devoted to “The Mystery of the Public Readings”, in which Dickens drove himself to near collapse (and made huge amounts of money) by touring America as well as Britain to perform readings from his work. In 1869, he had a stroke on stage in Chester, but still refused to stop the readings, partly because of the money but mostly because he was addicted to the instant responsiveness of his audience.
The highlight of his show was Bill Sikes’s murder of Nancy from Oliver Twist, in which, Wilson thinks, the novelist released some demonic aspect of himself – some yen for sexual violence – on stage. Murderous villains such as the gleefully sadistic Quilp in The Old Curiosity Shop, or the psychopathic John Jasper in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, were projections of his own cruelty. Wilson’s book is, you might say, bio-critical: “Dickens’s novels tell the story over and over again of his divided self,” he writes. The secrets of his life lie on the surface of his fiction. The dust jacket proclaims that the book goes “beyond standard narrative biography”. Which is to say that The Mystery of Charles Dickens does not reveal anything the previous biographers have not told us (indeed, it is conscientiously reliant on a small number of secondary sources). Instead, it shows, by a mixture of rational inference and I-feel-it-in-my-bones intuition, how the most powerful aspects of Dickens’s fiction drew on the most painful and secret aspects of his life.
The biggest secret of Dickens’s life, of course, was his clandestine relationship with Ellen (“Nelly”) Ternan, the young actor whom he first met when she performed at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester in The Frozen Deep, a play that he had written with his friend Wilkie Collins, and in which he himself was acting. She was 18; he was 45. For the next 13 years, Dickens paid for her to live in a series of discreetly located residences, where he would secretly visit her. The last of these was Windsor Lodge in Peckham, then a pleasant village outside London, with a railway station on the line from Dickens’s Kent home.
Each chapter of Wilson’s book is a different “Mystery”, the first being what happened to most of the £22 for which Dickens cashed a cheque on the day before his death. Dickens must have given it to Nelly for housekeeping. Which means that he must have made a quick trip to Peckham and that the “seizure” that killed him must have been induced by some hyper-energetic sex with her. Which means that hasty measures must have been taken to heave the dying novelist into a carriage to be driven back to his Kent home. “Exit Nelly, stage left.” (This enjoyable fiction, which has been hazarded by others before Wilson, is partly withdrawn near the end of the book.)
Next is “The Mystery of his Childhood”. Wilson is hardly the first to suggest that Dickens’s fiction was shaped by what he calls “the grotesquely sad galanty show of his childhood”. He briskly takes us through the story of the penury, the period in the debtors’ prison, the aborted education, the banishment, aged 10, to menial labour in Warren’s Blacking warehouse. There is less stress than usual on the improvidence of Dickens’s father, John Dickens (whose self-relishing orotundity at least inspired the matchless idiolect of Mr Micawber). Instead, Dickens blamed his mother. The ludicrous (Mrs Nickleby) or monstrous (Mrs Clennam) mothers in his novels bear the imprint of “the deepest needs of mother-hate”. Wilson asserts that “his flawed relationship with his mother is the defining feature, of the man and of his art”. Yet his privations made him a great novelist. The Blacking warehouse “saved Dickens the novelist, just as grammar school and Cambridge would have destroyed him”.
Then there is “The Mystery of the Cruel Marriage”. Nothing has more tainted Dickens’s reputation than his public repudiation (via an advertisement in the Times) of his wife, Kate, who had borne him 10 children and suffered all his demands for 22 years. Wilson’s house, he tells us, overlooks the back garden of 70 Gloucester Crescent, Camden Town, whence Catherine Dickens was exiled, with the company of only one of her children, Charley, their eldest son. The others were forbidden to see her. We have found out recently that Dickens tried to have her certified insane, so that she would be put in an asylum. Not only did he want to be free to pursue an affair with Nelly Ternan, he wanted somehow to declare that it was all his blameless wife’s fault. He was the wounded party.
But all the fury and resentment that he felt towards first his mother, and then his wife, inspired his greatest fiction, Wilson thinks. We should be grateful that he was so screwed up. Great Expectations, he believes, was a masterpiece of self-torment, formed from his own ruthlessness, his hunger for money and status, his family hatreds – all handed down to the novel’s narrator, Pip. “A helpful course of cognitive therapy, such as our contemporaries would have urged on a middle-aged man who had just visited such absolute mayhem on his wife and children” would have destroyed his creativity. Just as Pip owed his fortune to a violent criminal, Magwitch, its author owed his lucrative brilliance to “a secret, violent criminal”: himself. Or rather, the dark and nasty secret self that he never consciously acknowledged.
Wilson concedes all the contradictions and hypocrisies anatomised by John Carey in his brilliant, often openly exasperated study of Dickens, The Violent Effigy – but forgives him. Dickens had to contend with the “vast, smoky, cruel, boundlessly energetic, steel-hearted nineteenth century”, which made him variously cruel and sentimental. He was, after all, a nobody, who had grown up “with nuffink”. Alone among all great writers of the 19th century, he had “not merely looked over into the abyss. He had lived in it.” His lifelong insecurity was another creative asset.
If you are a Dickens aficionado, you will think that much of the book’s biographical narrative is well-known material, though here revisited in a sprightly manner. Yet its last, highly personal section suddenly shifts your sense of Wilson’s commitment to his subject. In his final chapter, he remembers first encountering episodes from Dickens at the age of eight or nine at his private school, which was “in effect a concentration camp run by sexual perverts”. The teacher who introduced him to Dickens was himself utterly sinister and Dickensian, the skill with which he impersonated Fagin and Squeers “all too convincing”. The shards of Dickens sustained his spirits among the privations and abuse visited on him by the paedophile headmaster and his monstrous wife, uninhibited sadists in Wilson’s vivid, detailed account. After this, nothing would convince him that Dickens should be condescended to as insufficiently “realistic”. And in returning him to the “abject terror and hopelessness” of childhood, but with that strange Dickensian stir of laughter (Fagin and Squeers, those comic turns), the novelist, hypocritical and self-deceiving as he might have been, has done him some matchless kindness.

BTS as... Rockers
Ngl, I panicked a little when I checked on the masterlist because an older post about BTS as rock band members was labelled as this title and I’d already written this one for like 3 members already. There’s various genres I mention, some of which are also metal and pop but I thought a simple general title would be best here.
Anyways, my second post coming back recently. Hope you enjoy.
RM
Mainly a classics man
Loves to analyse lyrics
and loves writing his own lyrics based on his current favourites
It’s like a form of literature to him
Loves to chill out to prog and psychedelic rock
Accidentally had the same music tastes as that weird geography teacher in school
Probably has a pet named after a member of a power / symphonic metal band
sorry I’m a bit of a Nightwish nerd and now I can just imagine him calling for his dog “Floor!” and everyone getting confused because they think he’s just shouting at the ground
this is the kind of genre he likes the most other than classic rock; that’s where the most literature references are. It’s poetry about poetry
Has a journal of art and lyrics quotes for when he’s super into a song
Could be mistaken for a geek in school
because to a juvenile ear, his taste in music might be challenging to listen to
like no one else had the patience aged 12 to listen to a 9 minute song or an instrumental track
and then even at 15/16, how many people your age would listen to Dark Side Of The Moon?
Guess he would say music is all about sitting back and listening and taking it in
Would love to be a songwriter for the right kind of singer
unfortunately though, he’s a bit of a loner
likes his own company too much
it’s probably the solitude that motivates him to write
too many more friends than he already has would be too much of a distraction
It’s not a sad situation though
music is what Namjoon loves the most
and “nothing else matters”
Oh yes, let’s have a bit of Metallica in there too
It’s not until he finishes school that he becomes more in touch with what people in the current world of rock and metal like
discovered “Rollin’” by Limp Bizkit like WAY too many years after it came out
“Have you heard this ace song man?”
“yep... in 2004 dude”
“oh”
But he’s no ashamed or anything, no
He’s proud to be a fan of the bands he likes
even if they aren’t to everyone’s tastes
“Well, sorry if this isn’t some 3 minute long four chord song repeating the same 5 words”
If they don’t appreciate it, their loss
Tumblr media
Jin
The old ones are the best ones
Think 50s rock n’ roll; Little Richard, Elvis, and so on
mixed with guilty pleasures of songs about ‘my baby girl’
Loves themed music nights
Whilst of course his favourites are the 50s themed ones
he also loves showing up to 60s nights to flaunt the flower power
or 80s nights in a fun wig as some member of a hair metal band
all the styles are very fun
but on a daily basis, he’s basically dresses like a teddy boy
tight trousers with white socks peaking out
jacket - sometimes a suit jacket, sometimes denim
as you can imagine, when a lot of this stuff comes back in fashion...
“Well, I did it first...”
you know, in this era he means he did it first
Loves a good finger clicker song
Once considered doing a tribute act around pubs and clubs
but he couldn’t decide who he wanted to be
Probably should take a role in some live production of Grease
he’s seen it enough times
and he can sing
He reckons he could never do theatre for long though
his fantasies are with playing instruments to perform
talented keyboard player
starting to get the hang of guitar too
but he does get carried away whilst trying to learn guitar
because he wants to add on all the cool moves NOW
He’s got some bangers he created on the keyboard though
he didn’t really intend to create original songs
it just happened one day after a break up
and he listened to Heartbreak Hotel
too many times
he just sat at his keyboard
and made something that really felt special
and then the day after that, he made a more upbeat song
and the week after that, he has 4 full songs in total
Open mic nights become something he enjoys
a bit of a local celebrity
“Would you play my grandma’s 80th party? Pleeeease?”
and aww bless him, he plays all the throwback songs at care homes
all free of charge
slips in some of his original music too
“Ooh, I’m afraid I don’t remember that one dear, must be my brain”
“Oh, no no no” explains Jin “I made it myself”
Old dears just love him basically
but so do the girls his age
Whilst some think the whole 50s get up is a bit lame
some go wild for it
because he dons all his outfits so well
and his songs feel so true to the era they were inspired by
you gain a love for the 50s just from watching Jin
Talented boy, keeping the 50s alive
Tumblr media
Suga
A lot say Yoongi has an acquired taste
an electronic element to rock or metal always makes it more interesting to him
loves industrial music - NIN for days
Linkin Park made most of his jams
cried for half a day at the news of Chester no longer being with us
Likes a bit of new wave, synthpop, all that
emo songs just help you through the bad times okay
Can equally enjoy a dub festival as much as a rock concert
some people think his taste is actually naff
but then they realise he also listens to the likes Foo Fighters or Sum 41
Plays like the same 30 songs on repeat
but his collection has so much more
He has some rock and blues for the road trip
he’s got your 70s singalongs for the party
Was briefly a DJ at a rock bar
got fired for not playing enough popular songs in his set
“wtf I thought this was a bar where people could appreciate this” huffs Yoongi
“yes but people want to sing to ‘down with the sickness’ or something, not ‘down in the park’!”
“stuff you then, I’ll take Gary somewhere else with me”
guilty pleasure: Kate Bush
A somewhat gothic sense of style
but not overwhelmingly gothic
He likes bandannas and black clothes
not always in black clothes though
sometimes the merch he wants just isn’t available in black
but no worries
as long as he can happily flaunt the music that makes him who he is
Tumblr media
J-Hope
Can listen to any rock genre
give him something and he probably already loves it
So yeah, the band members are pretty cool and all that
but what Hoseok has more interest in the backstage roles
he’d love to manage a rock band
be a tour manager
guitar tech
Much knowledge is stored in that brain of his
and he wants to put it to good use
He starts out as a promoter and organiser for the rock bar in town
which he eventually lives above
His events are ace
he can pick out fresh talent that everyone on that scene can enjoy
His showcase nights are the place to be
everyone can agree, he’s got amazing taste
no one can disagree with him
He’s a one man show and still managed to pull it off
he’s the promoter, the sound guy, the tech on all the instruments
way more professional than most other local music events
He takes pride in his work
did I mention he’s so good, it becomes a full time job?
As time goes by, he listens to less and less older music
but that’s okay
he’s happy with the time it takes to listen to all the up and coming bands
in the moment is where you should live
and he can still appreciate a band’s influences should they initiate conversation
“man, this dude really knows his stuff”
“will you manage our next tour?”
“can you do sound at our next gig? our guy’s rubbish”
and that one is like right in front of their current sound guy
The future is bright for Hoseok
his love for rock music could really earn him a solid living
Tumblr media
Jimin
Some say he’s a bit of a poser in his leather jacket
but he really does love his rock music
Sometimes a bit behind on modern rock bands or releases
Low key wishes he was born in the 50s / 60s
just so he could live in his favourite eras
his heart really lies with the classics
60s, 70s, 80s.
90s at a push
not the later 90s where grunge bands did pop
ew
actually any movie made in that time makes him cringe
like he’s all up for good clean fun
but christ it’s like they were trying to go back to the 50s or something
not everything is ‘swell’ you know
Don’t get him wrong though
he does also like some 50s music
He may or may not have spent that one time acting like Elvis in the mirror
it really hyped him up before a night out though
it may or may not have become a thing before going out in the evenings to boost his confidence
His all time favourite bands have to be The Rolling Stones and AC/DC
and no, he couldn’t pick between the two, ever
Doesn’t really have a desire to be in a band
but sort of accidentally picks up the bass to help out a mate in a band
and sort of accidentally becomes a permanent member
It’s just a cover band
but it’s so much fun
Sometimes, you can have a really bad day
and then listening to 23 people singing “I Love Rock n Roll”
kind of lifts your mood
“Play Wonderwall!”
gets a bit annoying to him
kind of wants to hit that one guy around the head with his bass
but he holds back
Because being aggressive wouldn’t be very rock of him
and whilst he does like punk music
he’s definitely not a punk
Screw all that political rubbish
music should be to enjoy yourself with
stop worrying about the world for one minute and
let’s sing about whiskey and cigarettes and just living life
“What do you MEAN you don’t know any Def Leppard songs?”
“For crying out loud!”
He tries to understand that not everyone will listen what the music he likes
“but... like seriously, how can you not though?”

V
Probably likes all the underrated bands
Loves vinyl
definitely collects vinyls
Likes to shop at vintage stores to fulfil his obscure taste
People are like “you paid £60 just for that?”
but to Tae, it’s worth every penny
He likes the classics too
he can sing along in a rock bar to all the well known tunes
old or modern
and there may be loads in his vinyl collection barely anyone recognises
but there’s some more familiar faces too
there’s The Beatles, Guns n’ Roses, Foo Fighters, anything like that
it’s just only like 20% of his huge collection
Whilst his style is inspired by those he idolises...
he can never copy them
that would be an insult to them and his originality
Plays guitar and writes songs
never anything soppy though
actually fairly hesitant to pick up an acoustic guitar
always plays electric
and the songs he makes are about having a good time, life experiences
but not about love
He can listen to a couple of cheesy tracks
he just won’t make any
“Who the heck is John Otway, Tae?”
“Oh, you know, Wild Willy Barrat”
“Willy who?”
“Cor baby, that’s really free!”
“....”
“Headbutts! da da da da da... Headbuttttsssss”
I feel like rocker V loves anything that feels slightly random
probably make his own secret songs that sound silly to others
Probably has a band that never gigs
it’s him singing and playing guitar
and a bassist and drummer that aren’t really sure why they’re here
but they kind of like the unique stuff he does
and the band is almost purposely bad
“It’s the imperfections that really give a song character”

Modern rock and metal
low key emo
Tears Don’t Fall by BFMV on repeat aged 14, his first break up
Lives for festivals
like when he goes to work, that is what he is earning money for
well, that and bills and food
has a jar for each festival he wants to go to this year
Also loves a bit of melodic punk
like when that one Australian band are finally coming to his country
he HAS to go
help me I’m really sad because this is me and The Decline were supposed to be coming to the UK and then this pandemic happened and now I might never see them criii
Has a playlist for every aspect of life
every feeling, every colour, every occasion
songs that remind him of a time, ones where he can visualise a colour...
many people don’t get it
“how many playlists?”
“how can a song be a colour?”
it just is
like come on, listen to this Red Jumpsuit Apparatus song
and tell him this doesn’t remind you of gold
Could be a journalist
knows everything and anything about his favourite bands
AVENGED SEVENFOLD
because it’s the perfect mixture of everything he loves about music
vests because M.Shadows
So badly wants to be in a band
tries every instrument you could find in a typical rock band
loves the drums
gets stuck on guitar though in his first band
well, he was just desperate to go gigging
he left after a year and a bit though
got boring
forms his own band instead around him being on the drums
Lives for this band
it’s like a rock band but with political lyrics
and they can perform at most events
they just fit any bill
gigs are booked almost every weekend
road trip with the lads
they travel like 50 miles just to be paid in beer only
Dreams of big time collaborations
that will probably never happen and he knows that
but it’s nice to dream, right?
puts on his own gigs a few years down the line
of course his own band are always on the bill
everyone thinks his gigs are a hoot
He even manages to book some lesser known punk bands
but they are a massive deal to him
“God, I love live music!”
“Do you always wear a black shirt guk?”
“Hey, I’m a drummer! It’s hard work; a lot of sweat involved... I’m sure no one wants to see my wet pits whilst trying to enjoy the show”
and then that person wishes they never asked...
but he’s right
he knows that a good band is all about the hard graft and work
and he is always so thankful for the great rock bands that influence him
