DEITIES Update – 2023 ➝ 2024 New Year’s Edition
Tumblr media
Happy New Year Everyone!
Typically I would write a formal blog post for my end-of-year update, but I'm writing something on the fly for the sake of timeliness ✨
I wish I could say I completed most of what I wanted in the year 2023, as I had several goals I thought were feasible. However, some of those goals had to be placed aside for a very sudden but fortuitous reason, that I feel worth sharing with ya'll -- which is that Iiiiiiii bought my first house! 🥹🥹🥹
(As you can imagine, this took quite a bit of my energy and time this past year, thus explaining part of my absence -- more details regarding my activity under the cut!)
---------------
From early August thru the end of December, my home-searching and closing process was incredibly long, stressful, exhausting, expensive (lmao), and time-inducing. I'm thankful to have had support from my agent, and well as my friends and family while navigating this ordeal, and I'm in the process of moving my items and services into my new home during the remainder of my apartment lease.
This home search combined with my full-time work, was a major reason why took a partial break from social media, and semi-hiatus from new art. This also affected my frequency of updating the DEITIES website and blog -- at least, on the front end. I did a lot of backend work and completed a major to-do with migrating the website and giving it a new primary domain -- so now, both deitiesofduat.com AND deitiesproject.com will redirect to the website. 👍
For the most part though, I used the 2nd half of 2023 to focus on some major life decisions, and leading into early 2024 I’m aiming to give myself a bit of a lifestyle reset. It's going to take some time to settle into this new normal, so aside from occasional media posts I'll continue to be quiet a bit longer. Once I complete some key home-owning goals and attempt to recharge, I'll aim to resume the goals I had in mind for DEITIES Project and my personal art, as well as engaging with my audience more (I miss interacting with ya'll, aha 😭).
In the meantime, thank you all for you continued patience and support! Despite being offline more-than-not this past year, I really appreciate the continue interest you all have in this project. DEITIES remains so important to me even with my shift in scope, so I'll do what I can to put iterate on it and give it all my effort when I have more bandwidth. Until then, wishing you all the very best in 2024!

Stoner Darling: Man..... These edibles ain't shi-!
[realizes the stare around them are actually eyes and they can't move]
Yan Entity: Human... You've returned... I apologize again for polluting your crops with my seed, but I missed your presence.. I hope you stay long as I've become fond of having you
Stoner Darling, internally - paralyzed in the creature's lap: what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck
Yan Entity: oh... you have to go already? You break my hearts so... See you soon
[Blinks and is back on the floor of their kitchen laying next to a batch of homemade edibles. They sit up and stare at the plate - slowly picking up another cookie]

Cabin 5 / Ares Cabin PJO Headcanons
Random thoughts. Kind of bored of not seeing any head-canons for this cabin.
Battle cry/war cry. Like their father Ares who screamed so loud on the battle field that even his worst enemies and allies shivered in fear, they can do something pretty similar in the span of the moment. But doing so takes a great deal of energy and exhausts them. Doesn’t usually happen, since it’s uncommon but it happens the more often you participate in war.
Some Cabin of Ares get along with many of the people in camp, after Clarisse decided to stop bullying people after the first book.
They’re able to understand which moves to make that will give them idealistic results: victory. But some of it can be reckless and they’re not able to think critically about the after effects or what will happen to the people around them if they do.
Cabin if Ares kids have this aura around them that scream power if messed with. It’s not as strong as the children of Poseidon, but it’s more like: mess with me and you’ll wish you could see your mothers face before you die. Similar effects can be found with the Children of Athena.
Most of the kids felt awkward giving food or other offerings to their father at first, since he was a pretty passive and cold parent. But Ares actually sits around and looks forward to seeing their faces and hearing their voices when they offer something in the bonfire during dinner time.
Ares’ favourite thing to do is to watch them fight during a battle, he loves to see what moves they can come up with and see them develop their own unique fighting style.
Many of the kids in the cabin felt insecure about fighting or sparring. The pressure that weighed on their shoulders to be a “master of all weapons” or a “war god” was a heavy burden. Occasionally, they would freeze up if too many people were watching them.
Many people do enjoy watching them spar, since the other cabins do learn a lot from them.
They’re surprisingly good teachers, since they criticise without caring if they hurt another persons feelings. They give good advice if their form, what weapons to use based on what makes them comfortable, power class and sometimes weight. They’re able to give constructive criticism that many people look forwards too, even people in the cabin of Athena look forward to it.
(Annabeth actually only started to improve once she watched some of the kids of Ares spar, since they fight so brutally. Her sparring with Luke inky taught her technique, not aggressiveness and brute force that you sometimes need to win a fight. Luke was good at beating around the bush, or dancing around his opponent to look for an opening to do a great deal of damage— but the children of ares find the most efficient way without feeling much tired).
Many people look up to them since they’re good at wielding all weapons without any proper training, but that doesn’t mean they get lazy. They’re one of the cabins that practice for the longest sometimes skipping dinner—until Chiron told them to stop making that habit, since it would be rude not to thank their father for such skills. (Also, socialising is good).
Many of these kids don’t actually enjoy military training that they got to go through when they finished summer camp. It’s pretty much a pain in the ass. But even so, they’re now good at using camouflage and tactical weapons, and even waiting for their opponent to let their guards down before striking.
They all have this things where if they feel extremely intense emotions during certain things, others in the room will also feel the intensity of it. The problem is that they could make glass shatter if it gets under control.
Sleep with the windows open, and they don’t have any curtains in their cabin. They don’t decorate the inside, but made sure to decorate the outside.
They actually started putting barbed wire on the roof because Hermes and Apollo cabin pranked them by making a bunch of birds shit in their roof - since cabin 5 were such jerks all the time. And they put the wire up to scare away birds.
Dogs are actually scared of some of the kids in cabin 5, no one knows why but I guess the vibes they give off are sometimes a bit too intense for certain animals.
Artemis and Ares are actually get along, not necessarily best friends but they do have respect for one another for wanting to protect young girls.
If any, and I mean ANY of his kids get kidnapped, abducted or even hurt badly— Ares will come in full battle armour ready to save them. He does get scolded by other Gods for ‘meddling in and sticking his nose in mortal business’ but he can’t help it.
Children of Ares often have the feeling to protect people around them, even if they don’t know them at all. During a problematic situation, they take the lead to get people to safety or even scouting out the area since their instincts and nerves never calm down during a potential fight if threat. They have this constant feeling of needing to be in control, to the point where they can even obsess over it.
Panic attacks are actually not as common as you think. Since they’re pretty good at handling their emotions if their own, in contrast to what people think of them as, they can actually be one of the calmest of the whole entire camp. To the point where it’s kind of creepy of freakishly calm they are during crazy things.
They zone out a lot and daydream because of the constant need ti escape since many of them are reckless during quests, their way of soothing themselves after a long day of a day off is to just stare off into space. Some friends from other cabins have ti drag them outside, so they don’t stay cooped up in their beds too long.
They love to play games like UNO, War (personal favourite) Pig and so on, but they absolutely suck at poker since you need a proper strategy to actually have a chance at that game. But they can make it pretty far if they are determined enough. However manny of them find it boring since it isn’t intense enough.
Thats all for tonight folks. I’ll make more head-canons tomorrow.

Apollo's golden hand I felt— just as what had always surrounded me crumbled down: it was Apollo's golden hand I felt; right when borders had to build themselves to stand higher than chaos would let them, it was Apollo's golden hand I felt. with the swift change and quick glances, while starting to fear the overthinking and picturing myself on the floor, it was Apollo's golden hand there. I reach to hear your divine message in this irregular path to healing where change can mean opportunity since you cleared my mind of doubt— yourself, warm Apollo, with just a golden hand of yours.

@akariamontgomery said: It’s the way that I was looking through the picture and was like “wow Montu is short” but then realized it was because he’s next to Sobek and Shezmu because Horus and Anubis are both around that height lol It looks so cool though to finally see all of them standing together
LMAODJFKSDFDS-- I laugh because I’m reminded of that one pic I drew when Montu looks smaller next to Shezmu (and where my proportions were more off) and now it’s coming back full circle. Victory bird can’t catch a break 😂
BUT YEH Montu is actually fairly tall at 5′ 10″, same height as Anubis! He just happens to be placed between two giants in the lineup (and Wep--).
Tumblr media
Technically the shortest guy in that lineup is Horus, he’s “““only””” 5′9″ -- but his hair is fluffy and adds an inch or two.
On that note -- I realize some of the heights in the full lineup may appear off by an inch or so because I’m trying to measure from the top of their scalp, not the top of their hair; Osiris was the easiest for that reason. Their website profiles do list their heights under the physical traits sections, but I can share them here for ease and comparison:
Sobek -- 7′ 0″ (~213 cm; Tallest overall in lineup)
Yamm -- 6′ 9″ (lmao-- ahem, ~206 cm)
Shezmu -- 6′ 8″ (~203 cm)
Ra -- 6′ 2″ (~188 cm)
Sekhmet -- 6′ 1″ (~185 cm)
Osiris -- 6′ 0″ (~183 cm)
Set, Thoth, and Wepwawet -- 5′ 11″ (~180 cm)
Anubis and Montu -- 5′ 10″ (~178 cm)
Horus and Mafdet -- 5′ 9″ (~175 cm)
Isis -- 5′ 8″ (~173 cm)
Anuket -- 5′ 7″ (~170 cm)
Nephthys and Hathor -- 5′ 6″ (~168 cm)
Serqet and Pakhet -- 5′ 4″ (~163 cm)
Bastet -- 5′ 2″ (~157 cm; Shortest overall in lineup)

I first imagined (un)lucky reader as fearful of their gift, but picture gremlin reader with that same power. An agent of chaos in alignment with none - given blessing by a deity of fortune upon winning its heart with their unruly ways. Inevitably catches on to some extent and all hell breaks lose for everyone, but namely reader's human yans. Gremlin reader is just having a field day watching it all unfurl.
-
Gremlin sets up a chair and umbrella in their front lawn, wearing their finest maid outfit as they draw a line on the pavement. A neighbor walks out as they take their seat, throwing on a pair of cat ears to top of their robes
Neighbor: What are you doing??
Gremlin Reader: Waiting. Check this. [Reader turns on their side, skirt hiking up to upper thigh as they shift. Stripped stockings on full display - the shadow hiding in their hedges to frame this one in a lifetime experience peers out to get a better picture. As their silhouette ghosts over the line - a flying motorcycle helmet crashes into their skull, knocking them out cold.]
Gremlin reader, scribbling on their notepad: hm, that's a first. So far it's been sports balls, bricks, and a printer.... Still need to send flowers up for that last one
-
[Yan luck deity in a council meeting]
"You are disrupting the very balance of our reality - for one mortal?"
Yan luck deity: Not just any mortal - observe. [Presents a video of reader sobbing in front of a vending machine, cradling their haul after the machine dispenses half of its load instead of their single bag of chips.]
Gremlin Reader: This - is so much bigger than me. I'd like to thank my manager, God, the guy I pocketed that two dollar bill off-
-
[Gremlin reader, holding a tide pod-
Yan luck deity: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

We're so used to referring to Apollo and Artemis as Divine Twins, but did you know that the earliest known Ancient Greek sources do not explicitly denote the two as being twins?
That isn't to say one text depicting a myth is more correct than the other - but I so rarely see mentions of Apollo and Artemis as not twins that I find it all the more dear. There is beauty in Solar and Lunar twins - but I also see the same beauty in siblings who are not predetermined to be each other's mirror by the fact of birth.
The first mention of Apollo's name in the Ancient Greek texts is in the Homeric Hymn to Apollo (3), trans. by Hugh G. Evelyn-White:
Tumblr media
Here's a link to the original.
They are not explicitly called twins and They have different birthplaces: Apollo's birthplace is Delos, Cyclades - Artemis is born in a place named Ortygia. It should be stated that only Apollo's birth is given any sort of detail, and it is unclear where Ortygia was.
Ortygia (center of modern Syracuse named after the Greek word for quail) in Sicily has been known to Greek colonizers since around the 8th century BCE, Homeric Hymns date to approximately the 7th-6th century BCE. It's possible that Artemis was born there. In this case, the locations are separated by the Ionian sea and a large part of Greece. Delos is a small island to the North from Naxos and right at the Southern ridge of Mykonos, Ortygia in Italy is the Eastern part of Sicily:
Tumblr media
Ortygia could also be attributed to a large number of other places. Strabo (63 BCE - 24 AD) in his Geography (10.5.5) stated that Ortygia is but an old name for Delos or for Rheneia, a small island in the Cyclades:
Rheneia is a desert isle within four stadia from Delos, and there the Delians bury their dead; for it is unlawful to bury, or even burn, a corpse in Delos itself, and it is unlawful even to keep a dog there. In earlier times it was called Ortygia.
Though earlier in the same book (6.2.4) he argues that Ortygia might also be in Sicily. He gives a detailed explanation of what we now know as the Old Town of Syracuse:
Ortygia is connected with the mainland, near which it lies, by a bridge, and has the fountain of Arethusa, which sends forth a river that empties immediately into the sea.
— The Geography of Strabo, Books 1-5 translated by Hamilton and Falconer
Ortygia is also a placename attested to different parts of Greece. For example, in Homer's Odyssey (5.123), a much earlier text, Artemis kills Orion in Ortygia and the place is not anyhow noted to be connected to Delos:
<...> until in Ortygia chaste golden-throned Artemis attacked with her painless darts and killed him.
— The Odyssey of Homer, translated by James E. Huddleston
Hymn to Apollo is not the only Ancient text predating any mention of "twins" that did not specify that the two were born at the same time. Hymn to Artemis (27) calls the Gods a brother and a sister while Hymn to Artemis (9) indicates that They were raised together (ὁμότροφον) without a notion of the circumstances of Their birth. Those are the earliest sources we know of, but there were many other authors and traditions that followed, some of which were:
Homer in the Iliad makes Them a son and a daughter of Leto
Hesiod mentions them being born from the same mother
Neither describe the two as twins.
Apollodorus in his Bibliotheca (1.4.1.) makes Artemis be a first-born so She serves as a midwife for Apollo
Plutarch in Pelopidas states that Apollo was born in Tegyra, Boeotia
Some later sources (Callimachus, Servius) consider Artemis to be first-born while some (Hyginius) do not specify on time of birth.
The first - and most prominent - author to speak of the Divine Twins is Pindar (518-438 BCE) in his Olympian odes (3.35), here he refers to Them as twins of Leda. At the same time, in the Nemean odes (1.1) he calls Ortygia in Sicily Artemis' birthplace and "sister to Delos" (might be metaphorical, as in sister-state). Orphic Hymn 35 to Leto (1st-3rd AD?) also calls Them twins.
It should probably also be noted that the cult of Artemis and the cult of Apollo are not always interconnected. While some locations (such as Delos and Ortygia, Sicily) have a history of implementing both Deities into the same votive tradition, some (Didyma, Claros) have worship of the Gods completely disconnected from each other. It is likely worth another post, but worship of Apollo didn't necessarily imply His sister, and vice versa.
With all of this being said, I do not believe that one version of the story is above another. And while I do find it fascinating - and logical - that the idea of Apollo and Artemis being twin-Deities has taken root, I do appreciate other, older and not, versions of the same legend.

Apollon's hand on a lyre, the warm light of morn, the voice most placid. Apollon's name echoing through day, reaching in and out on streams and on the chirp of birds.
