#21 - Lock, for @jilymicrofics
Rated T because of Teenagers.
For the fifth time, James rolled his eyes.
"I don't fancy her," he said. He'd repeated that sentence so many times, that James was almost believing in it; unfortunately, neither of his friends seemed to be buying it. "Why would I? She—she annoys me. She's friends with Snivellus. She isn't even that pretty."
Two truths, one big fat lie (with that lustrous dark red hair, green eyes that dazzled him, and a killer smile, Evans was the definition of pretty for James), but it seemed almost enough to impress his friends.
Then Sirius shook his head. "Prongs—you get all flushed when she's around."
"Maybe it's the reflection of her hair."
"You've been drawing sketches of her," added Peter.
"That—I'm an artist, I cannot choose who inspires me!"
"And you call her name in your... sleep."
James glared at Remus, who looked away hastily, but his friend didn't take back his words.
"It was just a random dream," he insisted.
It had not been random at all, but rather a continuation of the thoughts he'd entertained before sleeping—taking her to a flight above the Quidditch field, saying something smart that would make her laugh, impressing her with a daring dive, and when they landed on the grounds... now his dreams had been far more sensorial than his imagination. He could guess exactly how he had called her name then.
"Look," he said, almost desperate. He couldn't control how he felt about Lily Evans, but he could control what he told his friends, all of whom knew that he would never get a shot with Evans—she despised him. "You are all delusional."
Sirius exchanged a look with Remus and Peter before turning back to James. "So, you are telling me that if Evans harboured deep feelings for you—if she came marching here now and snogged you fully in front of everyone—you would just ignore it?"
For a moment, James relapsed, and he imagined Lily Evans throwing her arms around him, and kissing him right on the mouth. He was nearly sighing, but then he saw the knowing look on Sirius' face.
"It would be hard to ignore it," he said dignifiedly.
"He's got a point," laughed Peter.
"Oh, there is a better way of finding out anyway." Sirius grinned. "Evans is just around the corner." He waved his hand. "HEY, EV—"
James raised his wand at once. "Langlock!"
Sirius looked mortified at him, suddenly unable to speak, his tongue locked on the roof of his mouth. James threw him a victorious smile that vanished as soon as he realised that Evans had joined them anyway.
His gaze met hers before he looked away quickly, his face flushing.
"Potter," she called, sounding annoyed. "No spells on the corridors, you know it."
James glanced back at her, keeping his gaze at some point on her forehead, trying to avoid her green eyes. "I won't do it again, Evans," he said earnestly.
She stared at him, probably trying to figure out if he was joking or not; when James didn't say anything, she glanced at Sirius, still pointing furiously to his mouth.
"Won't you lift the jinx?"
"No spells on the corridors, remember?"
She almost chuckled. "I like Black more when he is quiet anyway," she mumbled, low enough so only he could hear it; then Evans winked and left with her friends.
James watched her go with a sigh. When he turned back, Sirius had his arms crossed, still unable to talk, but spotting a smirk that said too much in James' opinion.
"Oh, shut up."

Snow Cherubs & Delayed Deer ⛄️ 🦌
Tumblr media
Jily fic Summary:
If you are looking for seasonal vibes: Pining idiots, snowflakes, a hungover stag, posh purebloods, non-existent snowball fights, Black Family vocab...
Inspired by this video of Prongs (in reindeer form but ignore that!!) chasing a train
🎄Start of Christmas Holidays 6th Year🎄
“Ah,” a pause. “How do you do, Evans?”
Sirius Black looked momentarily surprised to see her in their compartment (their personal flipping compartment), along with the other marauders. But his Black Family training had kicked in automatically. Polite stand-offishness.
“Remus and I were on our way back from patrolling this half of the train, so I stopped here for a chat,” Lily said, staring up at him, not even vaguely intimidated. “What happened?”
“Nothing. Nothing at all,” he said with an evasive grin, which was clearly a big, huge lie.
Remus was looking at him sceptically and Sirius cleared his throat.
“Er, Prongs said to tell you lot he’s been… unavoidably… delayed.” He brushed snow off his school jumper and stamped more snow off his shoes, before shaking his wet hair vigorously.
“Arhh! Youh hoaking we, you wankah!” Peter kicked him in the shin.
“Can’t be helped, we were dealing with… important matters.” Sirius smiled at Peter and stole his last ginger biscuit.
“Matters?” Remus repeated, raising an eyebrow.
“Matters.” Sirius glanced from Remus to Lily in silent warning.
“Slytherin matters, of the mini Death Eater variety?” Remus obviously hadn’t gotten the memo.
Sirius’ grin defaulted to the I shall kill you later variety. Remus stared back. He obviously had received the memo, loud and clear, but had chosen to ignore it.
“Not again,” she said, sticking her legs up on the seat in front of her.
Sirius looked at his seat and then at her. She raised her right eyebrow.
“What?”
He raised his left.
“Did I say anything?” he remarked.
“Gods, I wish I could do that with my eyebrows,” Peter sighed despondently.
Sirius shook his head once more, liberally spraying them with slush. Lily looked at him with a puzzled expression.
“What?” He bit into the biscuit.
“Reminds me,” she said. “Of a dog.”
Remus stuck his head inside the newspaper he was reading.
“Really?” Sirius said, blinking innocently.
“The big black one that’s been hanging around the grounds, cute thing,” Lily added, narrowing her eyes. “His eyes are an unusual shade, silver, very similar to yours.”
Peter choked on his own biscuit.
“Oh, the attractive dog? The really popular one, with the sleek —“
But Lily wasn’t paying Sirius any attention.
“What in heaven’s name is that?” she said.
“Could I interest you in a caldron cake?” Peter shoved a box in her direction.
Lily ignored him.
“Remus, why is there a ruddy big stag running after the Hogwarts Express?”
“I don’t see- “
“There, can’t miss it,” she said, pointing out of the window.
There was indeed an ample stag, trotting after them at an increasingly frantic pace.
“What in God’s name is it doing?” she said, staring wide-eyed at him. “It looks almost as if…”
“Almost as if he’s late and missed the last train home for the holidays?” Remus mused from behind The Prophet.
Peter laughed, a touch hysterically, she thought - muttering something about worst secret keepers ever.

Chapter 14
~~august
Lily stood on the corner around the block from her house, spinning her wand in her hand. This was a crazy idea. Absolutely insane. And yet…
They had been trying to figure out for a week, with small notes and scraps of paper flying between them so fast that their owls must be exhausted. They wanted to get off together again, but Lily’s house was occupied by family staying (she was sharing a bed, so there was no sneaking James in through the window again), and James didn’t think he could keep Sirius out. Surely Sirius had a girlfriend or something that James could push him off on, or something, really.
This was the best solution they could come up with, sort of actually renting a hotel for the night. Perhaps it wasn’t too late to take that option.
Except…
There was something about this idea that had Lily really intrigued. It was a little bit forbidden. A bit taboo. If they were caught, and they could get caught, they could get in a lot of trouble. That just made it that much more exciting.
Lily didn’t want to find a hotel. She wanted to shag on the Knight Bus.

it aches a little part 3 (jily)
can be read from the beginning here!
The gentle clicks of James shoes echoed down the corridor as they patrolled, puncturing the stilted silence that hung between them. The only other disruption to the quiet was the nearly unnoticeable crackling of the amber flames that adorned the castle walls, flickering up out of the torch holders and casting soft shadows over James’s face. He was oh-so-lovely, in a way that sometimes physically hurt to look at.
The silence itself was smooth, almost silken, made of gossamer threads that hung between the two of them, pinned in place by small needles, fastening them invisibly onto Lily’s robes, onto her skin. Inescapable. Contrastingly, it felt as if the threads were merely draped over James, as if the discomfort was foreign to him, and the quiet could be shrugged off with a well-timed shake of his shoulders. There were other threads pinned to Lily’s robes too, interwoven amongst the silence, finer paradoxical strings of ease and discomfort that tangled together.
Nothing could ever be truly awkward, truly wrong when she was with him, but something between them had been upset, and their interactions felt considered and measured in a way that had become alien since the beginning of sixth year.

Canon is so scary like what do you mean Sirius black spent more time Azkaban than with his friends
What do you mean the marauders didn't live happily ever after with their lovers
What do you mean Sirius and Regulus never fixed their relationship and died thinking one hated the other
What do you mean Peter wasn't the cool uncle who bakes cake for Harry and Luna
What do you mean Lily Evans wasn't a swiftie and will never know who Taylor Swift is
Like, WHAT DO YOU MEAN??

#7 - Red, for @jilymicrofics
It was not fair, James reflected, annoyed, as he grabbed his things. He had been talking with his friends just as usual, but this time Professor Trent had bristled and now James was sent to sit on the last desk in the classroom, while his friends stayed in their spots. The only fair thing would be if they were all made to sit together there.
This year's DADA class was a bit of a joke, everyone knew. Professor Trent was their fourth DADA teacher in a row, and James supposed he was only concerned about surviving the year—their last DADA teacher had a weird encounter with a cave troll, and the one before that had nearly drown in the lake—
The sound of giggles distracted him from considering what terrible fate was waiting for Professor Trent, and he looked around. The girls were exchanging notes, hiding their giggles in coughs that would fool no one, but Professor Trent wasn't noticing it; it was not fair at all.
On the table in front of him, Evans got a note; she glanced behind quickly, their eyes met for less than a heartbeat, then her head snapped front before James could say anything. Evans scribbled something in answer and passed the note again.
"Subtlety, Evans," he mumbled, loud enough that she would not miss it.
She glanced back, pretending she was searching for something in her backpack, not looking directly at him.
"Not everything is about you, Potter."
"Still, I got your attention, didn't I?"
She ruffled, mouth snapping shut, and giving him her best basilisk-like glare; James smirked. He wasn't sure why, but he enjoyed a lot messing with Lily Evans; no one else would give him the same sassy comebacks, and just like always, Evans didn't let him down.
"With a head so big, how could I not notice it?"
She turned around, not giving him any chance to answer her, and moved her chair closer to her table, as far from him as she could; that left her sitting directly under a ray of sunlight coming from the window.
James smiled to himself; Evans would pretend she was ignoring him, but he could see the way she was tapping her fingers on the table, or shaking her head as if still discussing with him in her mind—or how she twisted the end of her ponytail before loosening her hair. Under the sunlight, her auburn hair fell in a swift motion, like a waterfall reflecting the sunset.
Professor Trent was talking now, something about homework that was worth some House points (something that James usually cared about), but he couldn't pay attention to anything but the way Evans' hair shined under the light. He had never considered it before, but it was hypnotizing; there were so many shades of red, darker and lighter, Gryffindor red or fire red, or just red, a shade so red that it should be standard for all colours that wanted to be considered red. Her hair looked so soft—if he could just slide his fingers through it, if he could just—
His hand was half-raised when the bell rang. Evans rose at once, and, seemingly against her best judgment, looked back at him, and when she caught James staring back at her, she crossed her arms and turned around, her hair whipping the air, leaving a trace of her shampoo in the air. Strawberries, James thought. It was fitting.
He was still standing in place, watching the last trace of Evans' disappearing by the door, just her dark red hair visible in the midst of all the students, when his friends got to him.
"I'm so bored," Sirius complained, yawning. "I can't believe he made you sit behind Evans—are you okay?"
"Yeah," James mumbled, unsure. "Why?"
"Your face is red."
That was fitting also.

I hate how everyone shits on soft! Remus Lupin like as if canonical he isn’t the biggest sweetheart ever.
Tumblr media
This TikTok post from @theonottineedusobad made me so happy and sad bc Remus is just so good™️ and I think the fandom forgets this for the new bad boy version of Remus that to me seems so forced and off putting
Let Remus be soft again!!! Let him wear his jumpers and read his books without smoking weed or stealing. Let him play pranks without being cold, let him be nice and gentle and sensible while also being a smart and mischievous teenage boy.
Let Remus be the glue of the marauders!! Not James or Sirius, REMUS!! Bc he literally is! Explore why James and Sirius, who probably were more rude and pretentious when they were younger, admired him so much that they broke the law for him. Explore the dynamics of the 4 boys as a group not just as best friend duo james and Sirius with a side of wolfstar relationship and a forgotten Peter.
As much as wolfstar shaped the fandom I really wish we could get a canon accurate marauders fic to see more of the friendships.

Mary is scared of cats so her and Lily never get one but Lily LOVES them, meaning whenever her wife goes missing, Mary immediately knows that she's broken into James and Reg's house to fuss over their two cats like a doting auntie
She has a spare key so she can go and see them whenever she wants even if they're not in
Every so often they'll go over to have dinner as a four and her and Reg will end up on the living room floor with the cats while James and Mary catch up in the kitchen
Mary: I'm going with Cas to see Marls and Reg play this weekend, to want a ticket?
Lily: nah, I'm seeing my babies
Mary: you're missing Regulus' semi-final match to go and fuss over his cats?
Lily: yup
Mary: you're missing Marlene's semi-final quidditch match? She'll kill you
Lily: ...yeah, on second thoughts-

AU where Lily got sorted into Slytherin and became best friends with Regulus cause you know they would hit it off. Anyways fast forward a couple of years and Regulus is basically gathering information from Voldemort as a spy and passing it to Lily and together they find out about the horcruxes so they go on a horcrux hunt and obviously they’re going to be successful cause have you met a more fearsome and competent duo?? Anyways once they win the war they go to Dumbledore and (very petty but well deserved) say that they accomplished more at 19 years old in the span of two weeks then he did in decades
