okay. let's do this shit.
Guess what, bitches? Mama bear's back and angry all over again. Remember when I said I might dive into a ragepost about how Bucky's treated after completing the one about Loki? This is it. This is the post. Welcome to fucking Thunderdome.
I will actually try to keep it civil. No promises, but I'll try. and I will not be accepting "constructive criticism" about my rage. Just so we're clear.
Got it? Good. Let's dive in.
In case you don't want to read the whole thing (I know I get wordy) here's what this whole post will boil down to: BUCKY NEVER HAD A FUCKING CHOICE. NEVER. NOT ONCE IN HIS ENTIRE ADULT LIFE.
Now, quick reminder: I don't read comics. I know nothing about Bucky's comic canon, except what Sebastian liked to bring up as often as possible during TWS/CW promotions: at some point, Bucky boned Nat. XD Since Bucky only exists as a Marvel property, I won't be bitching about other source material being disrespected like I did with Loki. This is all MCU, my dudes. And honestly? That's enough, because though we don't see nearly enough of Bucky for my liking, we do manage to get a rich, deep backstory to him in the material we're given, partly thanks to better writing in the early days of the MCU, and partly thanks to Sebastian Stan's phenomenal acting. Unlike the writers of the Loki series, Seb knows how to show, not tell. And gods, what stories those eyes show...
Let's start with the army. In an old post illustrating what an absolute BAMF Bucky Barnes truly is, I mistakenly said he enlisted, and a kind soul educated me on the incredible attention to detail Marvel used to pay - in this case, Bucky's ID number. 32557038. As this kind, eagle-eyed soul pointed out to me, the first two digits of that number - 32 - signify that Bucky was drafted, specifically from the NY, NJ, DE area (that last part is rather obvious, as Bucky and Steve are from Brooklyn lol). Bucky didn't choose to go to war. He was drafted. He was forced to fight, or go to prison.
Bucky was born in 1917, which means - again, as someone pointed out to me a while back - he came of age during the Great Depression. As a child, he would likely have seen his parents living comfortably and able to shower each other and him and his sister with gifts and fun memories, and then POOF. Stock market crashes when he's only 12-years-old, and life becomes brutal and painful. He manages to have some fun with his best friend Steve, and spends his teens/early 20s chasing girls and keeping his stupid, stubborn, tiny friend from getting beaten to death.
Steve constantly has something to prove. He's absolutely got what my mom always called "little man's disease", and Bucky's just doing his best not to roll his eyes too much at this asthmatic chihuahua constantly trying to beat up Tibetan mastiffs. While Steve keeps lying on his enlistment forms (an actual crime) trying again and again to get into the army and prove what a badass he is (definitely not), Bucky's had enough trauma and upheaval in his life and he just wants his stupid friend to calm tf down and live. Enjoy the fact that he doesn't have to go to war and get his limbs blown off.
And then he gets fucking drafted. This sweet, resigned realist who knows exactly how dangerous the war really is, is forced to put on a uniform and go fight strangers alongside other strangers thousands of miles from everything he knows. And on his last night of freedom, when he just wants to hang out with his friend, see some cool gadgets, and dance with a pretty girl, his stupid angry chihuahua friend feels the need to lie and try to enlist again.
Okay. Gotta get back on track. Ragepost about mistreatment of Bucky, not how much Steve annoys me. Sorry. Anyway...
Bucky's drafted, accepts his shitty lot with a brave smile, and is shipped off to Europe, where he is captured by HYDRA and presumed by the Allies to be KIA. Instead, he's strapped down, tortured, and given the HYDRA version of the super serum against his will. Steve rescues him, and Bucky knows he can't leave his idiot friend to his own devices to get his head blown off, so he dives right back into the fray. And then he falls off a cliff, loses most of his left arm, and is declared dead...again. This one's pretty damn valid, though lol. Without the serum no one knew he'd been shot up with, there is no way he would have survived that fall.
Here is where Bucky's story gets truly heartbreaking: His autonomy, his ability to consent is stripped from him through electroshock torture/brainwashing. The trigger words are conditioned into him during this process, and boom. Ten words in Russian, and Bucky Barnes is gone. Even the confused, hurting shadow of him is gone, leaving only a perfectly obedient killing machine, with Bucky's pretty face. He's strong as all hell, though, so they can't keep him fully under their control for long, not without more torture, when the disorientation of being fucking frozen wears off on longer missions.
I cannot stress this point enough, guys: Bucky. Had. No. Choice. Not like the draft, where his choices (go and get shot at, refuse and go to jail, or dodge and run to Canada) just suck. No, he literally didn't have a choice. He had his ability to choose stripped from him. If that's too complex a concept to really sink in, try this: His brain was fucking raped. Repeatedly. For decades. Nothing the Winter Soldier ever did was Bucky's fault. Nothing. Ever. Not remotely, no matter how you fucking slice it. Bucky is not an assassin. I almost said "not a killer", but he was a soldier, and a sharpshooter. He definitely killed when he was himself, but that was in a war, not a series of assassinations.
So far, imo, so good. This is just a rundown of Bucky's pre-show backstory. I don't love what he had to suffer, but I do love how it was treated in the movies. People were afraid of him, but when they knew the whole situation, Steve, Nat, and Sam rallied behind him. Natasha had plenty of reason to want the Winter Soldier dead; he'd tried to kill her multiple times and almost succeeded. Sam had no reason to help Bucky at all; he didn't know him, didn't trust him, and again, TWS had tried to kill him. But he stood by Steve, and when Bucky showed the clear difference between himself and TWS, Sam stood by him, too, and fought alongside him.
And it's very realistic, imo, that Tony didn't give a single fuck that Bucky had no choice. He watched this man murder both of his parents on tape. If TWS had killed my dad and I saw proof of it, I'd try to kill Bucky, too. Grief wins out over logic. Most emotions usually do. And that's a very important point we're going to come back to in a few minutes.
Bucky was really only in like ten minutes at most of IW and Endgame, and for multiple reasons I hate those movies, so I'm just gonna skip them, kay? Kay. On to the main event!
Here's where I get pissed off. Even if I didn't have an unhealthy attachment to this character, or the depth of appreciation for his tragic backstory that I do, the lack of continuity between the movies and the show alone would still piss me off. It always does. Don't even get me started on Joss "Continuity? What continuity?" Whedon and his (iconic, but flawed) shows. Ahem. Back on track...
Let me just get one little thing out of the way real quick: I fucking LOVE The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I love it. This show amazed me when I first watched it, and I still love it after many more viewings lol. I have only ever watched it all the way through without skipping over as much John Walker shit as possible the one time lol but I love how Sam and Bucky interact, and I fucking adore how Sam's arc was treated. I just wish they'd show the same care and attention to Bucky.
Because what they did to Bucky in this show is a fucking travesty. There was a tiny ray of hope in the pilot, when he called out Dr. Bitchface for being a terrible shrink. I thought that would be the start of him realizing he needed to find someone else and ignore the damaging shit that woman was telling him. But...nope. No such luck.
The show really had a strong start, I'll give it that. We see Bucky having nightmares of his time as TWS and struggling to hide how his traumatic memories are affecting him as he tries to live in the world again. He befriends the father of one of HYDRA's victims, which can't be good for Bucky (and we're shown it's definitely not when he sees the shrine in Yori's home to his late son) but it's sweet, how he's trying to connect and reach out to someone who's hurting and lonely.
They drop the ball a little with the whole... Bucky can hack a fucking car, but can't figure out Tinder thing. Had they just run with the fandom interpretation of the tiger photos line, that it shows that Bucky is bi and left it at that, I'd have been okay with it (and no, that is not because I ship Sam/Bucky. it's because Bucky is and always has been a certified nerd who loves technology and has consistently shown very little issue learning to use new gadgets). The outdated flip phone he handed his terrible court-mandated shrink was a burner; I liked that theory when I read it, especially since it's the only time we see him even holding a phone that old lol. This all could have fit the "Bucky is a sassy bisexual nerd" narrative and it'd be okay. Instead, the director was like "NOOOOOO that line was just to show how old he is and how he can't figure out all this newfangled technology!" Woman, you had him remotely driving someone else's vehicle with a tablet. That is NOT a man who can't figure out a damn smart phone!
But that's just a minor annoyance. What fills me with absolute rage is how everyone - not just the shitty therapist who lashes out at and purposely triggers her traumatized patients, but EVERYONE - Sam, Zemo, people who should fucking know better ALL treat him like he's a psychopath and a ticking time bomb. Like he chose to take the serum and he chose to kill for HYDRA, and he's just seen the error of his ways. *barf*
Bucky in the movies is established to be a victim, through and through. His guilt over what he was forced to do is natural, and that he sees himself as a monster makes sense... but that doesn't mean it's correct. The one and only thing I ever liked about Steve Rogers is at least he got it. He pointed out that none of it was Bucky's fault, he tried to show him that he was worth saving. That's the other reason I refuse to talk about Endgame. This post will get a WHOLE LOT LONGER and a lot fucking angrier if I open that door.
Zemo supposedly knows everything about HYDRA and super soldiers... So why does he treat Bucky like he's a corrupt serial killer? (this, for the record, is why I don't like Zemo) Why does he never point out that Bucky was given the serum against his will, or that his actions, when he had control of them, proved that he was never corrupted? Bucky never wanted to become superhuman. Bucky didn't even want to fucking fight!
Sam, despite constantly resisting the label, is shown very clearly to be Bucky's friend. By episode 3, he cares. He worries about how Bucky is getting lumped in with the other super soldiers in Zemo's speech... But he never really defends him. He says "what about Bucky?" but he doesn't point out that Bucky's a good man, he's fought so hard to help people, he does everything he can to avoid killing... And that fucking speech in episode 5. I was with him on "you gotta stop looking to other people to tell you who you are." I was like "YEAH! Tell him, Sam! Bucky, you're WORTH SAVING, boo! Your value does not hinge on someone else's opinion of you!" And then... Sam dropped the ball.
He not only continued the disturbing pattern of victim-blaming in this show, and in Marvel/Disney properties in general, but he gave really dangerously bad advice! No one in their right mind, mental health professional or no, would EVER tell a traumatized former assassin (whether he was responsible for his actions or not) to go confront his victims' families out of the blue with no warning and no one to mediate and keep things from going to shit. Yori already knew his son had been murdered because he was in the "wrong place, wrong time." How is it being "of service" to tell him you're the one who killed him?! Remember how I said Tony's reaction to learning the full truth about his parents' deaths was valid and would be an important point later? Hi! Welcome to later. THAT is the natural reaction to facing the man who murdered your loved one(s). And even if Yori didn't get angry and lash out, HOW IS IT "HELPING" HIM OR BRINGING HIM "CLOSURE" TO KNOW THAT HIS FRIEND KILLED HIS FUCKING SON?!?!?! This man befriended him, bonded with him, watched him grieve... And now he's learning this is the man who caused all his pain and heartache to begin with? That is so toxic and psycho I just... I can't even... UGH.
And then there's the equally toxic and damaging "deeply traumatized person just needed a stern talking to and a hug to be ALL BETTER AGAIN" ending. I loved seeing Bucky happy and socializing, but it was too soon, and it was unearned. And it sends a fucking awful message to people actually struggling with PTSD, and to their loved ones who don't know how to help them. Heaping more blame on them and then hugging it out is NOT helpful!
This show could have been damn near perfect with just two changes. That's all. Just two. 1) Someone, anyone, bringing up the reasons why Bucky was never a villain in his presence. Someone being in his corner and reminding him, like Steve did, that it wasn't his fault and he's not going to "snap". 2) More time devoted to Bucky's healing. Actual fucking healing, not the shit they tried to pass off as a magic fix-all. He can have his happy barbecue moment, just don't frame it as "everything's great now!" Healing isn't linear, and there will be both good days and bad. Some of the most fragile people in the world have the brightest smiles.
If we get a season 2, which this amazing show absolutely deserves, and they address this stuff, all will be forgiven in my book. Expanding on his story and his journey toward healing will help to reframe that "happily ever after" garbage as something more realistic. But as it stands now... Fuck Marvel.

OKAY
THE SPOILER FOR MLB
read at your own risk
CAN I JUST SAY SOMETHING (excuse my language please)
I LOVE ALYA SO MUCH (like honestly, she reminds me of myself sometimes :o)
BUT I HAVE A QUESTION
WHY DOES ALYA GET THE LB MIRACULOUS?!
SHE'S ALREADY SUCH AN IMPORTANT CHARACTER AND MARI PLACES TOO MUCH TRUST IN HER, LIKE IK THIS MAY JUST BE ME READING TOO MANY FANFICS WHERE ALYAS THE VILLAN (what! i was curious)
but its too much trust..
MARI KNOWS ALYA MAY HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE LB, WE ALL KNOW THAT FROM SEASON 1'S ORIGINS EPISODE.. BUT REALLY THINK ABOUT IT, WHAT MASTER FU TESTED MARI ON WAS IF SHE'D STOP TO MAKE THE RIGHT DESCISION AND CAN THINK ON HER FEET, ALYA LITTERALLY TOOK A SELFIE OF HER AS RENA FURTIVE- AND WE ALL KNOW THAT PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET CAN EASILY STEAL THAT PHOTO FROM HER (idk hacker tech, or maybe a akumatized villan) THATS NOT RATIONAL THINKING *before you say anything, ik mari can be like that (frightningle) but she'd never purposefully compromise her identity.
Also on my before point, im still thinking that maris doubting herself, its subtle (a lot subtle that chat's self doubt, i'll speak on that later) but its still there.. what if mari thinks that alya becomes a better lb and permanently gives her the miraculous, thinking she'd be better from the sidelines like master fu. MAYBE EVEN ADOPT A DIFFERENT MIRACULOUS!!! we all know mari's under pressure... and also possible depressed with high anxiety!
honestly, i feel like hawkmoth's suspecting mari as lb and mari may also be thinking his thought process... she might use any excuse to justify her reason- im honestly so scared...
ALSO HOW IS CHAT SO OKAY WITH THIS?
okay im done..
OKAY NOW TIME TO FANGIRL OVER HOW AMAZING ALYA IS-
Tumblr media
SSHE'S SO AMAZING LIKE- FIRSTLY-
LOOK AT HER, SHE RADIATES BADASS VIBES
AND SHE LOOKS LIKE MARI'S MAMA BEAR
OMG IMAGINE THE HOLDERS AS A GROUP OF CHOSEN FAMILY
ALYA DEFO THE MOM
SHE WILL PROTECT MARI
AND LB
YES
I STAN HER TOO MUCH, I CAN'T EXPRESS IT IN WORDS SO I'LL EXPRESS IT IN KEYSMASH

Riverdale S4 Ep7 Thoughts *Spoilers*
- FRED 💔💔💔Coming DIRECTLY for my heart I see, okay Riverdale
- WAIT… YOU’RE TELLING ME NO ONE RAN AGAINST HIRAM SO NOW HE’S THE FUCKING MAYOR? I, despite knowing nothing about how to be mayor, would run against him SOLELY so he wouldn’t win and I know I’d win because NOBODY trusts or likes Hiram fucking Lodge………………. god this show
- Do they guys not know that “the guy from the community center” is the one that found and took Dodger to the hospital? I mean I guess not because Archie’s a minor and doesn’t HAVE to stay, he could have just dropped him off and left but like… this is some fucking reaching shit right now. Archie as their enemy has never gone after them without Dodger attacking FIRST. He’s trying to help the KIDS, how does that make you think HE is the one who fucking did it???? The fucking reach… but also…. who DID do it 👀👀 Probably Hiram’s bitch ass…
- This bh scene of them talking on the phone while Betty packs could have been cute but at the same time it’s bh. Plus, I find it hilarious that Jughead doesn’t wait for Betty to say “I love you” back like???
- I love Choni, but God Toni looks EXHAUSTED. I hate how they’ve turned one of the healthiest ships into… this. Toni loves Cheryl which is why she’s not leaving her despite all of this batshit crazy shit going on, but Toni is caring and hardheaded (before they took away her personality smh) and she would shut this dumb Julian and Jason shit DOWN. Just let my girls be happy again, please… putting Cheryl through all of this bullshit CONSTANTLY is getting real old, real fast.
- Why do people always get afraid of killing someone when it’s self defense?? Like, you won’t get in trouble! You were P R O T E C T I N G yourself/someone you love. It’s the same mistake Alice/Betty made with that mystery guy that tried to hurt Chic or whatever, it was self defense but God forbid anyone actually goes to the police and doesn’t have something to use against them later on 🙄🙄🙄
- Veronica goes above and beyond I wanna cry
- Hiram really has to be a bitch ass ON THANKSGIVING? What a real dick… BUT YASSSSS FP BEING ON ARCHIE’S SIDE WE STAN
- FP not quitting because he knows that’s what Hiram wants, ALSO because he’d just put in another Minetta… ALSO SUPPORTIVE FALICE UGH WE STAN! Can they just get married already? They’re basically already married and I’m soft for them.
- FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE! FLIRTY ALICE!
- Hermosa does realize that the only reason she’s actually invited to a dinner with her father and his family is to manipulate Veronica, right? Like, throughout ALL the years even after her mother died we can tell he didn’t invite her because Veronica didn’t know about her. Like… I just…
- YES VERONICA!!!! WE STAN THE QUEEN BAD ASS BITCH OF RIVERDALE!!
- MARY 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 GOD I’M SO SAD
- Toni’s hair is amazing, and Cheryl’s dress is FIRE
- JUGHEAD WAS THINKING OF MR. CHIPPING WHILE HAVING SEX (I mean it’s implied because they’re cuddling in a bed and the way they’re holding each other tends to be how they hold one another after sex) I’M—THAT’S SO FUCKING FUNNY. I love that when they have sex both of them think of literally ANYTHING else.
- Betty with that hair and that shirt? Yes. See, if they weren’t almost step-siblings and didn’t bring out the worst in each other, this soft scene could actually be cute!
- BETTY… ORDER CHINESE FOOD? THERE’S A LEVEL 4 STORM OUTSIDE?? WHO WOULD BE OPEN DURING AN ICE STORM? Then again… Veronica is the baddest bitch and a go-getter so Pop’s would definitely still be open (also because of the still)
- POWER MOVE ALICE OMGGGGGGG FP IS LIKE “WTF NO”
- First of all, that “Yes my fantasy of eating junk food for thanksgiving!” Betty was so cute… but like that’s also a really weird fantasy… although they are almost step siblings, are still together, AND fuck to serial killer documentaries like weirdos so
- lmao “I’m too cool for everything” Brett put on that bunny mask… to scare Jughead? I know he’s annoying (although not as much this season THANK GOD) but damn you buried the kid let him breathe
- This dumb blonde bitch really thinks this kid brutalized Dodger like that despite CLEARLY being a sweet person like??? Maybe pay attention to the clues and don’t just take their word (who also said it was PROBABLY if I’m remembering correctly)
- That pajama jughead with Veronica in her PJ’s,,, the perfect duo that Riverdale will never give us. How fucking tragic 😭😭😭
- What, does Betty suddenly know how to make some kind fo truth serum or something?
- ALL THIS FRED TALK I’M SO SOFT BITCHHHHHH PLUS SHADE ON HIRAM?! Also,,, you can’t give a previous alcoholic drinks, also also that speakeasy is not yours but umm… it’s for Fred so I’ll let it pass
- LMAO BETTY YOU ARE NOT IN THE SERPENTS FUCK OFF. YOU SAVED A DOG. Oh bitch I just KNOW people are going to use that in those not-really badass edits of Betty… but at least Betty KNOWS that she’s not a sweet/nice person lol. Doesn’t mean I don’t miss when Betty was actually a nice, sweet, good person back in season one though
- OH MY GOD ALL OF THE KIDS STANDING UP FOR ARCHIE YESSSSSSSSSSS! WE STAN!!!!
- Can’t she just wait for, idk, dodger to get out of his coma and then ask him who did it? Like I know it was Hiram hiring someone but like???
- VERONICA OH MY GOD THE BADDEST BTICH OF RIVERDALE!!!! WE STAN!!!! STAB HIM HUNTY YESSSS
- YES MARY!! THE QUEEN OF RIVERDALE! Also them being surprised that she went mama bear? girl wbk Mary was a badass not to be fucked with
- HIRAM STOP TRYING TO MAKE FP GET DRUNK WE KNOW YOU’RE TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO FIRE AND REPLACE HIM
- OOH BITCH FP NO ONE IN THIS ROOM WILL CARE IF YOU KILL HIRAM. THEY’LL KEEP IT A SECRET!!!! Also,,, Billy Loomis vibes and uhhhhhhhhhhhhh YES
- WAIT,,, THEY REALLY FUCKING… OH BITCH??????
- NOT ANOTHER TEACHER STUDENT AFFAIR OH MY FUCKING GOD. DONNA I TRUSTED YOU, WE ALL TRUSTED YOU.
- “I’m a serpent, every bone in my body is a Serpent.” YES BRING BACK THE SERPENTS, TAKE OVER FROM JUGHEAD AND MAKE ALICE THE QUEEN YES UFDSOHFSHFS WE STAN FALICE
- Choni is so soft ughhhhhhhh <3
- UGHHHH NOW ONLY IF THEY COULD MAKE CHONI GET OUT OF THAT DAMNED PLOTLINE THAT’S RUINING THEM THEY COULD RULE RIVERDALE AGAIN
- NOT BETTY REALLY BELIEVING THAT DONNA WASN’T MANIPULATED… and people still want to call Betty a feminist icon? She’s ANYTHING but.
- How would you not realize a camera in your room?? It’s BLINKING.
- “Dig in, everyone.” A SOBBING
- “We monitor our patients very closely” *patient is gone* cliche of course… there’s no way they could get him out without tripping any alarms. My mom was in the hospital and on a respirator because she couldn’t breathe by herself and ANY slight movement that meant she couldn’t really breathe it would do like this jingle and it was really loud and wouldn’t stop until a nurse came in to fix it. But anyways this is Riverdale and nothing is realistic
- Mmhm Betty once again butting into things she shouldn’t and hurting someone in the process… why do people think she is a good detective again?
- NOT THIS BEING USED AS A WAY FOR JUGHEAD TO QUESTION DONNA’S STORY OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDD
- OMG ARCHIE PLAYING THE GUITAR AGAIN PLEASEEEEEEEE MY HEART
- THAT WAS YOUR DAD WATCHING OUT FOR US PLEASE SOMEONE GRAB MY HEART BECAUSE IT JUST FELL TO THE FLOOR.
- A PLAQUE FOR FRED I’M SOFTTTTTTTTTTTTT
- FP WEARING A LEATHER JACKET THAT I’M ASSUMING IS A SERPENT JACKET.
- If this means my Serpent babies are going to come back…. I’m going to CRY.

Thoughts on/reactions to the BNHA: Heroes Rising movie since I need somewhere to gush about it (now that I’ve gotten to see it officially in theaters):
NOT SPOILER-FREE/SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT
(As an FYI, I saw the film in the original Japanese with English subtitles. Not sure if I’ll ever watch it in the English dub, seeing as I didn’t watch the first movie or the anime in English dub. I don’t mind it, and I’ll watch clips of it here and there, but I don’t feel like going out of my way to watch BNHA in its entirety in English.)
In no particular order (this is long, kinda a mess, not verb tense consistent, iffy at a few points because I don’t remember some exact details, etc. Be forewarned. Split into sections for a semblance of convenience):
The Fight Scenes/Class 1-A (General Overview):
This movie is pretty action-packed! The majority of the film consisted of fight scenes—but never quite to the point that it felt tiring. Now, I’m no expert on animation or fight choreography, but I thought the battle sequences were STUNNING! I really feel like the animators put a lot of care into this film.
Speaking of fight scenes, I was pleasantly surprised to see how a lot of the less-centric 1-A students were able to get their time to shine. Uraraka got a cool Badass™ moment (kinda reminded me of her fight versus Bakugou at the Sports Festival). Sero goes all out on a villain (was it Nine?), getting thrown back, but still earning a concerned “Sero!” from Bakugou (so that’s a win). Aoyama is surprisingly a force to be reckoned with his Navel Laser. Shoji deserves the title of Honorary Big Brother to Katsuma and Mahoro (the kids) with the way he devoted himself to protecting them throughout the battles (seriously made me emotional at one point!). Tokoyami and Dark Shadow were sick as usual! Kirishima gets another Unbreakable moment—this dude’s seriously got guts!
Todoroki, while arguably one of the main protagonists of the series, admittedly didn’t feel like he got TOO much screen-time during this film (I feel like it’s because they wanted to focus on the relationship between Deku and Bakugou). That being said, his defeat of Chimera was AWESOME. It was a nice touch having him remember Endeavor’s advice as he prepares his final attack, his father’s profile dissolving into his own. Todoroki really went Plus Ultra there (almost too much, like, damn, I think you got him). There were a few times like that throughout the film, like with Bakugou vs. Mummy, where I was like, pretty sure these villains should not be alive right now, but accordingly to anime logic, they’ll be fine (plus, we can’t have the hero students be killing anyone...). Basically, everyone was really cool, and I think this movie proves how they all deserve to be at UA.
The climax battle (Deku & Bakugou vs. Nine): I kinda wish I didn’t spoil so much of HR before seeing it officially—not that it ruined my enjoyment of it, but I feel like it would have been more intense/emotional if I went into it blind. So I knew going in that Deku and Bakugou were going to share OFA (and I may or may NOT have seen clips of it online beforehand... because I have no self-control), but it was still really great seeing it on the big-screen! Didn’t cry like I thought I would, but the moment where Deku and Bakugou did their Detroit Smash together for the first time got me kinda teary-eyed, with them doing an All Might-esque one-fist-raised pose. It’s just so heartwarming to see these two work together, carrying on All Might’s legacy.
Deku + Katsuma & Mahoro (the two main, local kids of Nabu Island):
Speaking of getting emotional: THAT scene when All Might arrives post-final battle and he’s cradling an injured Deku in his arms and Deku apologizes to him for having to give away OFA because he feels like he’s failed him: OH MY GOD! Major props to Daiki Yamashita for his voice acting in that scene (as for all his scenes as Deku, of course), it was so raw and emotional! Same praise applies to Nobuhiko Okamoto for his respective scenes as Bakugou, naturally.
Also, I SUPER enjoyed Deku in this film! I mean, I’m already a huge Deku stan (perhaps this comes as a bit of a surprise, since I never shut up about Bakugou and Bakugou only), but you could really see his development in HR! He comes across as a lot more confident, steady, level-headed, and sure of himself than he used to be! It was incredible to see him fight too: his first encounter with Nine in the forest stood out to me in particular. Ever the strategist. Sure, he’s still a little bit of a push-over (he apologizes to Mahoro, who’s just a little girl, after she scolds him for not coming to “rescue” her brother fast enough—it’s a pretty funny scene), but he really feels like he’s filling out his role as All Might’s successor. Not to mention all the parallels of his relationship with Katsuma to Deku’s own relationship with All Might. Also, of course, Deku is a huge sweetheart, and it was so endearing to see him interact with the island kids. Katsuma and Mahoro might seriously have some competition when it comes to the cutest characters in this film: they really amped up the sweetness of Deku in this film. But maybe I’m biased because I’m a Deku stan so I’ll shut up now. But seriously, big mama bear vibes from Deku with the kids.
While I’m on the topic of cuteness, Oh My God, Katsuma and Mahoro were PRECIOUS! Now I understand why Horikoshi couldn’t stop drawing them—seriously, they are the total opposite of the usual annoying kids trope. Katsuma’s shyness/timidness was adorable. Mahoro’s sass and attitude was adorable. On top of that, they were very brave and protective of each other. Their brother-sister relationship was also very wholesome. But seriously, almost every time these kids were on-screen, I could hear people in the audience going “Awww” and I was like “YES! AWW IS RIGHT!”
The Bakugou section (because my adoration of him warrants an entire section of its own):
This doesn’t seem like too natural of a segue, but cuteness has now made me think about Bakugou and how he was in the film. Can I just say, I love how all the comical, raging Bakugou scenes made the audience laugh; I love that we all share the same amusement of this angry gremlin. The part where Bakugou finds out that Mahoro tricked him by making an illusion of a villain and he goes into Rage Mode to the 10th power was amazing. The edgy guitar rendition of Bakugou’s leitmotif playing in the background as they zoom into his furious face thrice as he gets increasingly incensed, with fiery flames in the background, was peak comedy. And then Deku has to hold Bakugou back as the kids escape his wrath. Even when the two tumble to the ground, Bakugou Grudge-crawls up to them with Deku clinging to his back. One of my favorite scenes in the film: it was hilarious. Oh, Bakugou. Never change.
Bakugou’s old ways aside, I do like how he seemed to warm up to the kids a little by the end of the film. His genuine smile and sort-of wave upon seeing the kids saying goodbye to them as they sail away on the ship was sweet! Earlier, when Bakugou first grabs Katsuma and carries him along to show him where the “villain” is, once they locate it, Bakugou immediately yeets Katsuma aside like an empty soda can (he was fine, of course). While, admittedly, I found that moment hilarious, I did feel the general reaction of audience also being like, jeez, Bakugou, you don’t throw kids like that, lol. I did like how, despite tossing Katsuma aside, Bakugou did grunt a quick “Go hide” to him, showing that he did care at least a little for Katsuma’s safety: more than he outwardly demonstrates, at least. I like how the whole “proper handling of kids” thing came back during the final battle when Bakugou catches Mahoro from falling when Nine tosses her aside (not totally unlike how Bakugou tossed Katsuma aside earlier.. hmm...). And Deku was the one who punched (kicked?) Nine at that moment instead (showing a little reversal of roles when it comes to saving and fighting). Seriously, Bakugou puts Mahoro down so gently on her feet too! It was so sweet! And then he proceeds to give her his whole “This is why I’m going to be the number one hero” spiel too. If my memory serves me correctly, I think Mahoro wasn’t even going to fall that far, and would have probably been fine if she just dropped to the ground, but Bakugou still went out of his way to catch her, which is great. But yeah, though obviously Bakugou is nowhere near as bad as Nine, I like how this was one of the moments which proved the difference between Bakugou and the villains, that his rescue demonstrates just the kind of hero Bakugou is eventually going to become.
Another moment like that, which I haven’t seen too many people talk about, is when Bakugou and Deku are immobilized by Nine’s 2 Blue-Eyes White Dragons, and Nine gives a speech on something along the lines of how power is great and he wants to create a world in which the strong rule over the weak, yada yada, total domination. Deku, of course, is infuriated by Nine’s evil plans, but I was also pleasantly surprised to see Bakugou tell him off too, telling him how he’s crazy for wanting to do something like that. Of course, it's been clear for a while that Bakugou is not necessarily the power-hungry, overlord type, but this moment really made a little more clear to me that Bakugou is more concerned with winning and the sense of self-fulfillment that comes with it, rather than ruling over others with his power (though I don’t doubt that Bakugou finds some enjoyment in being able to beat up villains. I mean, look at that feral smile).
Also, Bakugou melting a whole-ass mountain and hurling it at Nine. Freaking lava monster. That is all.
The Deku & Bakugou Dynamic:
Deku really wasn’t intimidated by Bakugou anymore in the film, so I appreciated those moments when Deku stood up to him and wouldn’t take his shit. One example was when Deku held Bakugou back from scolding the kids. Another moment I thought was great was when Mahoro called them about Nine’s arrival, and Bakugou answers the phone, thinking she’s crying wolf again, and starts to chew her out until Deku snatches the phone out of his hand. Bakugou just stares at him in shock, he looks so offended, haha! He can hardly get out a word of protest before just slumping in defeat, annoyed, but still letting Deku talk to Mahoro on the phone. Really like those moments where Deku takes charge like that.
Bakugou eavesdropping (as per his usual nosy self) on Katsuma and Deku’s conversation, in which Katsuma apologizes for their prank earlier, explains his story, and Deku talks about how saving and winning are both important (*hint hint, nudge nudge*). And Bakugou’s so engrossed that he doesn’t notice his popsicle melting until it drips onto the floor. And he just stares at it in vague bafflement. Yes. Good.
This was another really small moment, but it was cute, so I have to talk about it. Deku’s training outside and Bakugou runs into him on his patrol. They have their whole talk about how they’re going to surpass each other, and then, right at the end, Deku kinda just smiles at him. It’s such a fond smile, you can even hear him giving a small laugh along with it. And then Bakugou meets it with a determined stare, and he almost gives a gruff little “huh?”. It was just a funny little stare down they had there, except they’re coming at it with completely different expressions/sentiments. Bakugou almost seemed a bit confused by Deku’s happy smile; it reminded me of that moment during Deku vs. Kacchan 2, when Deku takes a moment to smile at Bakugou, impressed by his progress, and Bakugou gets pissed at him for looking so happy. Like, c’mon Bakugou, let the guy be proud of you! I think now, post-DvK2, Bakugou does understand Deku’s words/expressions a little better, but he still doesn’t seem to fully comprehend how much Deku respects and cares for him. Either that, or he doesn’t want to acknowledge it. Here’s to hoping Bakugou comes to realize it at some point. Bakugou-accept-compliments/affection challenge 2020.
I think everyone’s already said what there is to say about Deku’s decision to give OFA to Bakugou, and Bakugou’s reaction to it. Even so, I have a few things to add. One, I like how Bakugou’s grown to respect Deku as a rival/fellow hero in the movie, which is especially evident once Deku gives him OFA. Deku, of course, trusts Bakugou enough to give it to him, saying how it’s alright if it’s him, really hammering in that bond they have between them (that and well... he’s really the only other option here...). Two, Bakugou’s initial reaction after Deku implies that they need to share OFA, his expression right before he reaches out his hand to take it, has some people talking. I initially thought that the reason Bakugou looked so defeated/begrudging/upset, was because him having to accept OFA/help from Deku in order to win was a blow to his pride (kind of like in the Final Exam team-up). Or that it also means that Bakugou can no longer beat Deku at his strongest (Bakugou with OFA would become the better hero by default, kind of like how Endeavor rose to Number 1 after All Might’s retirement, instead of earning it through besting him fair and square). But I’ve also seen people say it was because Bakugou was reluctant to have to put an end to Deku’s dream (not unlike the way Bakugou put an end to All Might’s career?), since Deku was forfeiting OFA. Which I can kind of believe, but then again, this is why Bakugou is so hard to pin down: we rarely get his inner narrative, so his expressions are often multi-faceted/layered. So who knows what he was thinking? Granted, I tend to actually not give Bakugou the benefit of the doubt in these situations, but I do hope it was a mixture of all these things. But I think Bakugou really did feel bad about Deku’s hero career potentially being over: he even asks him if he was sure about his decision immediately after accepting OFA. Which is a huge 180 from the beginning of the series, when Bakugou WANTED to put an end to Deku’s dream. Now that’s growth.
This is going to delve more into just Bakugou himself, but I had additional thoughts about the whole OFA transfer thing, and how All Might (tentatively?) concludes that the predecessors returned OFA to Deku, even though, supposedly, it is non-returnable. The fact that Bakugou doesn’t remember the OFA transfer might be a better thing that I thought, since, if it really was the predecessors’ decision to give it back to Deku (and not just because he conked out before the transfer was done), then that just means that Deku is the one who is really worthy of OFA, and not him. At least, that’s one way of looking at it. Which might have crushed Bakugou, even though Bakugou likely doesn’t want OFA for himself. But I almost think that explains part of Bakugou’s reaction I mentioned in the previous point. Maybe, deep down, Bakugou doesn’t think he deserves OFA? Sure, Bakugou’s made it clear that he wants to become the best hero with his own power/Quirk, but it still hurt/confused him in DvK2 that All Might chose Deku. OFA itself choosing Deku and not him might as well just confirm that Deku is truly the better hero. Of course, we can’t really know for sure why the vestiges returned OFA to Deku. Personally, I would find it kinda funny/sad if OFA just thought Deku was better. Maybe it’s destiny? Maybe Deku’s journey is just not meant to be over yet? Or maybe, Bakugou, in the OFA mindscape, actually relinquished OFA to Deku of his own accord? Either way, as much as I love Bakugou, I think the vestiges were right in going back to Deku. Not even just for plot-reasons, but that OFA really is better suited for Deku. It’s a Quirk meant to be used for the sake of other people, and Bakugou simply isn’t of that mindset (yet?). I’m sorry Bakugou, but I’d choose Deku too.
Overall, I really feel like Deku and Bakugou’s teamwork was so natural and in-sync! They seem to act like one unit, not even having to talk to each other during the final Double OFA showdown, like they’re on the same wavelength or something. This film really made me believe that these two are going to become hero partners in the future or something, they’re too good together to be ultimately separated. Or maybe that’s just me being hopeful. We’ll see.

Wrap-Up/Conclusion:
There’s probably a lot more to discuss (that other people will likely touch on), but this is mainly what I cared about, so I’ll leave it at that. But just as a brief summary for everything else: LOV was good as usual, were mainly only at the beginning of the film; speaking of, that opening car chase sequence was pretty neat; the brief, Endeavor vs. Dabi was cool; Endeavor hugging Todoroki after they were rescued and Todoroki Not Having any of it was funny; Nine was alright as the main villain, could use some more depth, but I guess that’s what the short spin-off manga and bonus material are for. Hawks was great too. Even though I didn’t watch the English dub, I really liked the short clip I did see of him in English. His English VA suits him well (as does the Japanese)!
I don’t feel like going into critiques, even though there certainly are things to critique in the movie. I just enjoyed this film for the joyride that it is. Main nitpick: maybe NOT drop a bunch of high-schoolers on an island without a Pro-hero presence. Maybe NOT do that. But we got the Good ol’ Hero Commission going: “Oh boy, what could POSSIBLY go wrong???  🤷🤷🤷”
Oh, and I do think that this film is safe for anime-onlies. The only thing is that people who haven’t read the manga will see things/characters they don’t really know about it and will, thus, be left wondering a little about them, but I don’t think it’s a huge deal.
If you took the time to get to the end of all my rambling, thank you and congrats!  I didn’t include screen-caps for this post because the movie’s not on digital or DVD yet (and I don’t want to use other people’s camrips because Reasons), so I might do additional analyses once that happens.

The Royal Masquerade chapter 3:
Tumblr media
Ah so what if I wanted to marry Hunter? What will happen then? I mean he’s one of our LI’s and at the moment I think he’s going to be my main LI but who knows, might change in the future like it did when I was reading Royal Romance for the first time. I mean I originally was going to go for Liam but then Maxwell stepped in unannounced and swept me off my feet, so who knows.
Tumblr media
Dear Theodosia, what to say to you....you’re a Nevrakis, so I was kind of hoping you’d be a bit more receptive to hunting, Hell, your defendant, Olivia would be seriously up for this challenge! (If you know, hunting was still around in the 21st century as a nobile fun sport, but it’s generally frowned upon now, which is good) But hey, you do you, if you’re different from the other Nevrakis descendants then, that’s cool! I still stan you anyway!
(Also sorry for the Hamilton reference, couldn’t resist it, I haven’t had an opportunity to make like that since they referenced Hamilton in Bloodbound book 1.... or when I got ‘Your Obedient Servant’ vibes from the chapter where Ernest challenged Puke Richards to the duel in Desire and Decorum book 2..... but given Olivia has mentioned Theodosia before, I’m sure we’ll have a reveal that she is a badass! She’ll blow us all away, someday, someday...... okay I’ll stop now, I promise 😂)
Tumblr media
On the other hand, Percival, just wait for another 400 years and I highly doubt your descendants, Bertrand and Maxwell would stand for this (baring in mind they did get attacked by a bear on Bertrand’s stag do, so yeah) or relish the fact of capturing the bear.
Tumblr media
....I can already tell it’s going to be a repeat of Royal Romance isn’t it? I’m going to meet Emery Beaumont and fall head over heals with him aren’t I? Just like I did with Maxwell! History is going to repeat itself! Great! That’s just great! And just after my mc admitted to Damon Fierro that she was falling in love with Hunter as well! Which then got a mama bear killed (which of course I called him a monster to Hunter and explained what happened and my current LI got maaaad) and then I couldn’t adopt it’s bear cub because I was saving my diamonds for Royal Heir book 1 finale tomorrow! (Honestly, TRR/TRH gang aren’t even born for another 400 or so years and they’re having an impact on at least one of their ancestors lives 😂😂) all well, at least I have a week to prepare for the inevitable this time! And it might not even happen, I might not fall for a Beaumont this time! History might not repeat itself! I mean it’s unlikely that it won’t , but still could happen, but it’s best to accept now that I’m doomed to fall for the Beaumont’s and my MC will be part of Maxwell’s heritage while I can! 😂😅😂
....Also, if Emery looks like Bertrand and acts like Maxwell, I will loose it 😂 (I’m joking, PB probably won’t go that far with a LI.... although I am hoping he’ll at least act a bit like Maxwell, since Percival seems to act a bit like Bertrand....). Also, this means we could also potentially be one of Maxwell and Bertrand’s ancestors, (although not a direct one, as I think Percival is the direct ancestor of Bertrand and Maxwell) if we pick Emery as our LI.
