the time that glenn howerton was in a gay period-piece play about crossdressing

so awhile back i was poking around glenn howerton's wikipedia looking for movies and such that i might have missed, and i noticed it had a small theatrical section listed. this was never something i'd given much thought in the past, but on this particular occasion i was so hard-up for new Glontent that i decided to see what i could find about the three plays listed there, because i'd never seen anyone else have much luck with that and i love a good internet scavenger hunt. walk with me.

compleat female stage beauty caught my eye right away-- the title of the play itself is interesting, and i happened to know already that the most famous real-life duke of buckingham was the lover of king james. so of course i went delving...

and what should i find but the entire playscript for compleat female stage beauty, For Free, on archive dot org? anyone on earth can rent it and read it for an hour at a time, or for 14 days if you want to really take your time with it. i have to assume that this is NOT common knowledge among sunny fans (or anyone else), as the archive upload only has 99 views at the time of making this post.

to give a VERY succinct summary of what the play is about-- in the 1660s, during the english restoration, women were allowed to act professionally onstage for the first time in english history. this caused problems for the male actors who had previously made their careers playing female characters, such as edward kynaston, around whom the play centers. outside of his acting career, kynaston is a gay man, and he's in a romantic entanglement with george villiars, the duke of buckingham (NOT the same duke of buckingham who was fucking king james-- that was this villiars' dad. we love gay fathers and their gay sons!) kynaston struggles to find his place in a changing social landscape where it seems as though his talents are no longer needed or wanted.

before getting into the script proper, the book has some information about notable early productions of the play. this is great because it pins down a lot of details about glenn's involvement in the show that wikipedia left unanswered, but there's also an unexpected sunny crossover here-- in an even EARLIER production, the lead role was played by david hornsby!

(i also learned over the course of my deep dive on this that glenn's costar, lead actor brandon demery, was a fellow member of glenn's graduating juilliard group!)

things don't end well for kynaston and villiars, but still, the onstage relationship between the two is both electrifying and heartbreaking as it changes over the course of the show.

now, this WOULD be where i would include cast pictures or footage or any kind of photos of glenn in this show... but if any such material exists, it's not publicly available. i went so far as to email the publicity and outreach coordinator for the theater that hosted glenn's production of this show to ask if they had any archived materials, but she told me that they didn't.

but this production took place in october of 2000, meaning it was pre-that 80s show, meaning we can all sit and think about how a glenn that looked like This was acting in a gay period piece about crossdressing and gender roles and the mystery of human sexuality. dudes rock.

a bit of a disappointing note to end on, i know, but i really wanted to talk about this play and share it with people!! it's a super interesting and overlooked part of glenn's early career, but also i think the script is fascinating and very well-written in its own right. i definitely encourage yall to check it out on the internet archive if you're interested-- again, it's literally free!

Chapter 18: just the beginning

*This was amazing, the setup he had made was beautiful. A simple show of affection but it meant the world to you. The candles he had lit around the apartment had also wowed you.

The lighting was so elegant and the wine plus good conversation only added to the already amazing night. This date had been long overdue, and it was such a relief to just be there.

Listening to his own story was quite a lot to take in but you enjoyed how he had shown to trust you.

Edward in a way had been cursed from the start, the orphanage situation though was most shocking. It angered you the way the Wayne family had seemingly abandoned not only him, but all the other children there. You felt guilty for being fooled by their kind facades and empty words of worry.

They didn’t care, but you did.

Moving aside from the subject he had told you about his work as a forensic accountant, and his interest in puzzles, riddles and really anything to that nature. It endeared you how stereotypical he really was, the whole nerd thing looked good though.

After a few more glasses of wine and the finishing of your meals you helped Edward clean up the table and set up for the next part of your date.

The scary movie marathon you’d planned so long ago was finally happening and you couldn’t believe it. Pulling out the futon on the couch, you laid out a blanket and Edward followed up by setting some pillows down and an array of films. You sat down and once more he followed, you curled up into his side, your glass in hand. “You’ve really outdone yourself Ed..” you giggled leaning on him for support as you gazed up at him.

“I really love this.. it’s so sweet of you.” He chuckled and placing his arm around you he leaned in kissing your forehead. “For you, it’s worth it. Besides I wanna treat you nice, especially after the week you’ve had..” he cooed. You nodded and took another sip from your glass, emptying out the last of the liquid. Letting out a sigh you leaned back for a moment, “Need more?” Edward offered, starting to get up with his own empty glass.

You nodded, handing it to him. “Me too, I’ll be right back.” He seemed excited. “Can you grab my phone too? I need to tell them I’m staying the night.” You asked, batting your lashes at him. Edward gulped and then nodded, smiling wide as he walked to the kitchen behind you. Relaxing into the pillows, you leaned back and picked up the various DVDs in front of you. “Hey Eddie!”

You called, “Let’s watch this one first!” You set the DVD down in the spot he’d been sitting. “I can’t see it Hun.” He playfully called, sounding drunk as you. You laughed and then turned to face him as he was walking back in. “Sorry,” you giggled, “But look now, what do you think?” You asked, grabbing your drink from him. Edward grabbed it and nodded, placing it into the Tv and then sitting beside you again.

You smiled and cheered to ‘finally having a date night’ before taking a sip. Edward watched with silence and a smirk as the drink went down your throat. After a few more sips of the drink you began to feel a little sick. You must’ve drank a little too much because you were struggling to even sit up off of him, “Ed..” the words instantly trailed off and panic started to brew in your system.

Edward said nothing, his eyes now focused on the movie. You tried again, your body struggling to move as you pushed off him and struggled to sit up. You winced as your eye had hit the back of the couch slightly. He finally looked over at you and grinned.

A jolt of energy shook your body to move, forcing you to fight your way over the couch, but you were met with the harsh ground, yelping as you hit the floor. “Y/n.” Edward cooed, leaning back to watch you struggle, but he made no movements to get up. “I must’ve put a little too much..” he sighed and turned away from you getting up.

Your vision was starting to blur and time was moving in slow motion, you still fought to stay awake even as your body began to give in. Blinking heavily, you saw his black boots stride up to you, heavy thuds rumbling. “Goodnight princess..” he cooed and with that you whispered not forming any words as you passed out.

**This had gone perfectly. You had walked right into his plans. Even sipping the drink without taking another peak, amazing. He laughed to himself after you’d passed out on the floor, picking up your phone and sending the usual texts. You were gonna be out for a few hours which would give him time to sneak you out while Ron was on lunch.

Edward was so happy with his work he allowed himself to indulge in touching your face again as you slept. But he had another part to do and that included clean up. He was quick to rid any evidence you’d been there that night, even going in and removing the pings of your location. Every precaution had been taken to ensure you fell off the face of the earth.

Within a few hours he had been able to relocate you to his newest place, filled with his chemicals, some rats and a few files he’d kept there.

You were resigned to a small room that was supposed to be a walk-in closet, chained to the wall with a small padded bed underneath you.

He left you water and set up his final touches of a surveillance camera in the corner before leaving. Pleased with the work he had completed today.

Jimin is a pretty bOY

This is a continuation of our discussion on my last post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me, I think I agree with all of it.

Not sure how I feel about the calling eachother out bit or near scolding of others in the comments. Please let's be welcoming and respectful of others's thoughts regardless of whether or not we agree with it. It's ok to hold diverse views. We do after all come from different backgrounds and have accumulated different experiences and I think it plays out in how we see things. Everyone's opinion is valid. Plus, I purple yall.

Now, do I think he is trying to pack on muscles........? Yes. He said so himself in Festa when he said he would rush to the mirror when he thought he had gained some muscle only to find out his biceps looks like a muscled kindergartner.

He also said lately he's into exercising and staying in shape which is true because for quite sometime now since early this year he has been talking about how "weak" he is in their Vlives and have even given instances of him not being able to do certain things- certian simple and easy tasks- which is typical of him I'd say. He's always talking about how "weak" he is especially around JK and juxtaposing that with "but JK is so strong" which I'm sorry but I have to smirk at right now cos it's such a typical gay pick me simp thing to do. We've all been there.

Do I think he's trying to be a muscle bunny or revert back to his body shape around debut? Absolutely not. But I do think he is straddling the line of toxic masculinity which is what the conversation is about.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to stay in shape or even enjoying work outs. Last night I ran downstairs because I had left my stew on the stove and now this morning I called renew my gym membership because I discovered running can be actually fun to do... No. No it's not. The gym instructor would have to come for me kicking and screaming.

RM have said even though JM looks skinny and fragile he is one of the strongest within the group. Besides, this is not the first time he's expressed interest in working out and building his body- hello, on Era?

I remember people complaining he looked too buffed up in that period on SNS and PJMs quickly jumping in to clear the searches for it. The choreo for On required agility and endurance and required the members- not just JM build up some definition in their muscles.

We've seen them go through all that. So it's not simply a matter of black and white staying in shape or doing it because he feels pressured to do so. Especially, when you consider that he's undertaken some pretty unhealthy measures in the past in attempts to lose weight or soften out his body post these muscle building, weight gaining periods and we've always chalked it up to his dance and how as a contemporary dancer he has to look a certain way or this or that to try to justify and make sense of it. Next you, know there are six chapters of break the silence of him talking about all the dark places he's been, the pressures to look his best for his fans or for his job and all these other painful stories he's shared with us over the years. And it's like, but why? Why do this to yourself?

I'll never forget the look he gave JK when JK was talking about wanting to build muscles in one of the interviews for the promotion of Be- I think I made a post on it. When JK noticed JMs disapproving glare he backtracked saying he would want to stay skinny after gaining all that muscles.

I mean if I'm to be honest, he was bound to crack at one point. The signs were there being surrounded by all these men who adhere to the traditional aesthetics of a masculine body- from Namjoon to Taehyung.

I wish y'all will steer the conversation in this direction and make it more about gender norms and expressions and breaking stereotypes and diversity in the body aesthetics of men.

Jimin is a man too. He just isn't what people traditionally will label masculine. Androgynous is more an apt word in my opinion. How many times have I said, I think Jungkook hetero passes because his body aesthetics is quintessentially what most associates with a masculine man?

Breaking gender barriers is not just about embracing feminine apparels- that teeters on cross dressing quite frankly and can be a bit performative and baity. Then you have to consider their culture in itself has an inherent pro gender diversity feel to it.

Now, let me explain my problem with the Klout ad campaign a little bit.

Do you see how Tae stands out? And I'm not saying this to fuel the "Tae was their fav" debacle. It's the 007 feel... I'll explain in a bit.

Most often, alcohol advertisers as well as most advertisements intended to sell to men often try to appeal to men's internalized ideals of masculinity or try to shape and define what a man or masculinity should look like. These ideals are so often toxic and detrimental to men and mostly women too.

Take a look at these ads for example. All I had to do was google search ads for men.

Real men drink milk and look at the image they present as real men. This blatantly implies if you don't look like this, if you are not a strong cliff climbing man with abs you are not a real man.

The second image is subtle. I call it the 007 slash Kingsmen-esque ideals of masculinity. It portrays men as sexy cool badass- works out but isn't too buff, filthy rich or middle class, wears Rolex, designer clothes, is kind but has a mean exterior and is every 13 year old wattpad girls's dream of a man. In fiction, you see this kind of masculinity in characters such as Edward cullens to Christian Grey. And a lot of ads for men alternate between these two ideals of masculinity.

Do you see how they modeled Taehyung in these ads after this kind of masctheme? Tae looks the same in almost all the ads. 007 sexy cool badass.

Now, I may not be a makeup beauty guru or MUA or whatever, but one thing I've picked up on especially when it comes to makeup for men- BTS and Kpop idols mostly is that, they soften out the harsh features on their faces and make them appear more androgynous or effeminate to suit the Kpop look and they ditch it entirely in different settings.

So for instance, Tae and Kookie's natural hawkish eyebrows tend to get softened around the arch and edges- don't know how the fuck they do that- but it appears less in your face intense most times when they wear make up in kpop related contents.

However, in certain other contents that lean towards a certain gender theme those features are emphasized. Not to say hawkish features are masculine features. Just saying in men, Kpop idols, my observation is they soften those features out with makeup or surgery.

Now, take a look at JM in these ads and look at everything from his posture, make up, hairstyle and brows. It's as if someone took an eraser to his androgynousity and erased his feminine side. Take a look at his photo above and compare it to the ads.

I am not a man. But I feel the gender look they went for, intended to appeal to men, tapped into a rather outdated stereotype of what man and masculinity should look like.

What is a man?

What should a man look like?

What aesthetics of masculinity is Jimin gravitating towards now? And I'm not talking clothes, I'm talking the expression of his gender. Time and again, he's talked about how looking a certain way made him uncomfortable in the past because he was constantly fighting his feminine side. He is androgynous. Sometimes he leans more into his feminine side. Other times he leans more into his masculine side but this is the only time he's leaning into his masculinity that makes me uncomfortable to watch because like I said it bothers on toxic masculinity.

He's said whoever he was, the version fighting to look masculine, that wasn't him. So forgive me if I worry whenever i see him suppressing his feminine side and acting like 'one of the boys.' Him staying in shape is not synonymous with him erasing a valid part of himself or suppressing it. He can stay in shape, celebrate his masculinity and still be FILTER.

What I'm saying is, this not a conversation about him exercising. This is a conversation about an ad erasing his feminine side and boxing him into a narrow expression of his gender and how that might be affecting his view of himself especially in the way he's been gravitating towards a certain masculine aesthetics and how that could be toxic.

Tae has said the same thing and BTS have agreed the JM as of 2019 was the real JM according to them.They said he was that way- suppressing his feminine side, because there weren't much songs and choreos that suited him and so he had had to bend himself to fit with the others.

And so when I see him leaning a certain way I tend to wonder if his exterior environment is playing a role in that. I hope you can understand that.

He is a contemporary dancer and strength and flexibility are prerequisites for his craft. The company go out of their way to incorporate contemporary dance in their choreos for JM's sake which helps solve that problem of him trying too hard to look a certain way.

May be I'm projecting. May be my little brother is effeminate and I've always recommended Jimin as a role for him to tell him not to try to look different just because other boys look different. May be I've seen him try one too many times to kill himself in the gym trying to build on muscles and getting frustrated with himself because he ends up looking like someone else. You can't gym the queerness away. Society will never let you be who you want to be so you might as well flip it the middle finger.

These boys are being shaped by their environment. I hate to say this but the environment they are in isn't exactly progressive and the longer they stay in there cut off from the outside world...

Flying out helps. Meeting different people and being exposed to different cultures and conversations on gender expression helps.

Anywho, these are just concerns I have. Will have them till I see that's not where he is headed towards. But let's not act like these ad campaigns do not and can not psychologically impact these boys especially as these advertisers are not looking to tap into their own definition of gender and masculinity but shape it and redefine it to appeal to the demographic they intend to market to.

I think this is just a grey area for me. Rather than try to change JM to look a certain way in order to sell alcohol. I think the ground breaking thing would be to have a man who looks like JM show us how someone like him would sell a can of drink. I think that would be revolutionary.

anyways, fast forward three years, and y’all had become a relatively notorious couple at jj’s frat events 

you always rolled up with a deep squad of cute ass sorority sisters, usually meeting your boyfriend at whatever address he texted you after a late afternoon of happy hour drinking

jj’s frat brothers especially loved you for bringing along 5 to 10 girls to even out the ratio

afterwards, y’all would attempt (key word) to pour whatever handle of shit one of your friends would bring up on the roof with yall into the waiting mouths of the boys below you 

you poured fireball down jj’s shirt, knowing it would prompt him into losing the shirt all together

one of jj’s friends would sweep all of the cups off of the desecrated table, not caring that there was still a good amount of natty light in most of them, before propping one of your cute friends on the table for a body shot

you rolled your eyes as jj slid you on the table next, cutting off one of the younger members from going next

you laid back, trying not to let spilled beer saturate your hair, resting your head in one of the less-sticky spots on the table (a previously drawn dick sitting right next to your head)

you giggled as jj leaned over you to lick at your collarbone, rolling your eyes as he dragged his tongue down your chest in an effort to tease you

salt was sprinkled on the damp spot, before a very full shot of tequila was nestled in your cleavage - you did your best to not move, and spill it over your strapless top

your friend handed jj a lime, which he slipped between your teeth, allowing you to clamp down on the rind just enough to prop the juicy part of the lime upwards

jj grinned down at you, before one of his drunker friends started to yell about him “taking all damn day”

before you knew it, he was licking the salt off you, taking the shot from between your tits (hands free, like a champ), before taking the lime out of your mouth, tossing it to the side, and kissing you instead

you were laughing into his mouth as his friends started booing the excessive pda

he just flipped them off in response

it’s also worth noting that jj’s popularity at parties always guaranteed him a room upstairs, no matter who’s house y’all were at (you distinctly remember bringing him to a pregame to a mixer your sorority was throwing with another fraternity - jj somehow finessed kicking another fraternity guy out of a room at his own house, so y’all could use it)

it was a talent that came in handy more often than not

Unsolicited

 Edward knows he technically shouldn’t, but he’s bored at work and for once, the kids are actually quietly doing their own thing. He decides against his better judgement to open Facebook and scroll aimlessly for a moment or two, while time goes on. It’ll give him a chance to see what exciting lives the rest of his friends are living and envy those who aren’t stuck at work.

 He quickly notices a red little number up on the top right corner to signal that he has one unopened conversation and for a moment, he wonders which of his friends would have messaged him. There hadn’t really been any ongoing chats at the moment, so he’s pleasantly surprised and looking forward to hearing from his friends.

 He’s only a little disappointed when he sees that it’s not from any of his friends, but instead from a guy he’d met just last Friday in the most strangest of ways. (His friend had hosted a garage sale and had asked for help. Edward had gone. He’d brought along some of his own stuff. This one man – Charles – had bought his old wooden shoe rack. Charles had chatted Edward up. They’d exchanged contact information and had more or less chatted since then. It was a strange way to meet someone – but, not the strangest.)

 Charles is – cute and they had a pleasant chat. Edward certainly hadn’t minded the attention, even if it had come from out of nowhere. He’d been looking forward to meeting up with him again, but as the days had gone on and their conversations had progressed, he’d found himself slowly losing a bit of interest over Charles’ over-eagerness.

 There were just so many times Charles could say he thought Edward was attractive in an hour before it got redundant and annoying.

 Edward was flattered Charles was interested in him, but Edward didn’t want to rush this either. He’d just gotten out of a serious relationship and with the end of the school year looming close, he had other things to deal with. Once summer break arrived, he would have more time and more energy. In the meantime, however, he didn’t need this stranger he barely knew to wax poetics and tell him he wished to wake up beside him to see how he woke up – or whatever garbage he’d been told. Edward was willing to give this a go, but he wasn’t looking to settle down and get married with Charles after knowing him for three days and it quite honestly felt as though Charles had already booked their venue at times.

 He was – over the top and intense. Edward had appreciated the fact that Charles had told him he’d found him attractive when he’d first seen him and he liked that he had actually returned to chat him up. It had been a little weird when Charles had called him his beloved and stranger still when he’d apologised from taking up his time and keeping him away from his friends when they’d talked that first time, but Edward had let it slide and had almost found it charming – in its own bizarre way.

 Now, it feels as though Charles is trying too hard, when really he doesn’t have to. Edward thought he was attractive, had even told him so and was more than willing to see where this would lead. but if However, if Charles doesn’t slow down, Edward will back out and move on. (Which reminds him – there’d been that whole other conversation where Charles had told him that he looked forward to living their lives together and that he didn’t want to lose him. To which Edward had politely told him that it would be best to get to know each other first.)

 Edward wants some fun – not some intense long-term lovey-dovey besotted nonsense. At least – not after three days of talking with the man.

 Still, he opens the conversation, curiosity, and boredom getting the best of him, and at first, it’s nice, until Charles asks him if he could have a photo. Edward lets out a long-suffering sigh and is glad his students are too busy with their work to notice.

 Charles has asked to send him a photo right now, of all things.

 Edward is so not in the mood for any of this.

 “No. I’m in class teaching. My students are taking a test.” He writes out. He doesn’t care if he comes across as annoyed, but this man is being irksome in his own infatuated way and it’s – pathetic. He likes the attention, to a degree, he enjoys feeling wanted, but Charles needs to calm down his ardours.

 He leaves it at that and doesn’t bother with Charles for the rest of the day.

 By the time Edward’s done, he heads to his car and figures he’ll check again to see if he’s gotten a new message. There is still part of him that is curious about this whole ordeal and so he’s a little bit pleased when he sees that Charles has sent him a few messages after their last chat.

 He’s less enthused when he gets to the last one.

 The first was in regards to the whole photo debacle, saying maybe next time. The second mentioned that he was going for a jog. And the last message – the kicker really, was a photo Charles had sent of himself, shirtless and thankfully from the waist up.

 And to think Edward had nearly sent him a post-work exhausted face selfie for the fun of it.

 He grumbles, puts his phone away, and figures he’ll deal with it when he gets home.

 It’s not that he necessarily minded the photo – he did find the guy attractive to a point, but – it had been unprompted. Unsolicited. He hadn’t asked for a photo. He hadn’t been expecting a shirtless photo. He wasn’t in the current mood to receive such a photo. He could have been at school on break and gotten this photo.

 He’s angry and annoyed by the time he gets home.

 Edward putters around and leaves Charles on read. It’s one thing going after sex and expecting these photos and it’s another to get them out of the blues. He lets his friends know of this debacle and relishes in their reactions. He’s glad someone gets it.

 Finally, after making dinner, playing a few rounds of video games, taking a shower, getting his lunch ready for the following day, and having a nice chat with his friends, he decides to answer Charles.

 “Even if a photo of a woman, man, or person shirtless may be nice to receive, it’s always better to send it with consent and with fair warning. Especially when you’re not expecting one and that with my work, there are often children nearby.”

 He doesn’t expect an answer so quickly, especially since it’s been five hours since the photo was sent, but Charles, true to form, answers. Edward laughs out loud when he reads how very sorry Charles is and how he genuinely thought Edward would appreciate it. Edward sighs again and groans, passing a hand through his hair.

 He tries to find a polite way of trying to get this man to understand and he’s only a little surprised by how easily the words come to him, “There’s a time and place for everything. You don’t send these types of photos willy-nilly whenever you feel like it. There’s context, time, mood, etc. Consent and fair-warning. Imagine you were sitting with your family, friends, or kids and you received such a photo without warning. You can’t assume that the person on the other side is in an appropriate setting to receive these types of messages and images without checking beforehand.”

 It’s at times like these he wishes men could be less – like this. He likes a good shirtless photo just like anyone else who’s into men, but he hates that this seems to be a norm. And at least this was only a shirtless photo! He doesn’t want to think of the number of times when he was having a nice conversation about literally anything unrelated to the human body, only to find himself with a photo of a man’s junk, completely unprompted.

 Sometimes, he almost wishes he were into women just to be spared this.

 Edward figures he’s given Charles enough etiquette lessons for the night and puts his phone away. He pulls up something decent to watch on television and does his best to forget about the incident for now. If anything, he reminds himself, he doesn’t need to commit to anything with this besotted Romeo.

Today was finally the day of the battle , after a week of training me and bree decided we would not be fighting , we got ready and dressed for the " Battle " bree left before i did because i had some business to take care off . This was my outfit for the new born battle vs the cullen's .

I then knew they were telling the truth so i out my guard down .

I saw a silver wolf attack a new born then i saw a brown haired wolf being beaten by the newborn and then i went to rescue the wolf but he broke his ribs and i grabbed the new born and i slammed him on the floor and used my sword and i decapitated him . Me and bree stepped right behind the cullen's after the wolf got taken by his pack . I saw the vampires i had seen days ago , a short blonde girl that had an innocent look , along her side on her left there was a boy that was just as young as her and look identical as her with medium height and brown hair and look pretty hot honestly , on the girls right there was a very handsome man , he was really tall infact he was the tallest one out of all of them , he had an olive complexion and his hair was cropped he was just pure perfection ! Lastly a man who had beautiful light brown hair , he was also tall abd looked like a womanizer honestly along with the other tall guy so i did not get my hopes up .

Jane : Impressive , i have never seen a coven if a magnitude result intact .

Carlisle : we were lucky .

Jane : i doubt that .

Alec : it appears we missed an entertaining fight .

Jane : yes , its not often we are rendered unnecessary .

Jane : you missed one .

Then the dude next to the human let out a loud laugh that caught all of our attention .

The tall man lets out a growl to be hared directing it to edward obviously but then his attention goes towards me .

Jane : is that true felix ?

Suddenly a black wolf emerged from the shadows and bent down and walked towards me now i was sitting in the wolf and so was bree and the wolf took off running as fast as it could , bree was convinced had just been saved from her death and so was i but i wanted to be close to the man , i needed him . As the wolf was running i hared the tall man growl and yelled

And that was the end before we were half way away from the battle field .

A/N: A double update for yall tonight! I hope you guys are enjoying. It’ll really pick up after this chapter! 

William’s POV (just trying it. One more chapter is planned to have his POV but let me know if you like it and want more!)

"William you're dumb."

"Shut up Auston, you don't know anything!"

"I know enough that you're going to fuck this all up for us."

"I'm not fucking up anything." 

We were all out in the woods hunting. Animal blood was shitty but at least we got the thrill of the chase before we could get blood bags to satisfy the real thirst to be around humans. We were having fun until Auston decided to stop me.

"You're being selfish." He roared at me, his eyes turning black and veined. "We finally have a good life and you're willing to risk it all for some dumb fucking girl."

"Auston calm down." Morgan said earning a look of hatred from the other boy. "Now."

"This is such bullshit!"

"Auston. This isn't up for discussion. You know what I saw."

"She's not that bad dude." Kasperi said coming out of nowhere with Mitch.

"I don't give a fuck about any of this. She's a threat."

"She's my soulmate." I snarled pushing him to the ground. "You're just upset because you haven't found yours yet."

"Shut the fuck up! I don't care. I care about a weak little human who will react who knows what way to us b-"

"Morgan knows you idiot! He saw it. She's not going to react badly."

"Why are we even giving her a chance to react at all?" 

"Auston that's enough." Morgan yelled, silencing everyone. "You're behaving like a child. You have been the whole time and it's getting old, fast. As if William isn't having a hard enough time without you making it harder."

"Oh and by the way Aus, you should really stop following us around. She's noticed."

"There's no way she noticed."

"Listen you cocky little shit. She's talked to me about it. She's uncomfortable."

"Auston you promised us you wouldn't do that!" Mitch said hurt that his friend lied. Mitch always was the most sensitive person, especially towards Auston.

"I'm sorry Mitchy, but what if-"

"No Aus. You're supposed to trust Willy. You're supposed to trust Morgan, all of us actually. If you don't trust us what do we have? Nothing. And trying to keep him from his soulmate? That's so fucking low."

"Mitch I do trust you guys. I don't trust her."

"She's got a name." I mumbled.

"I don't care."

"I'm going to tell her Auston. I don't care if you give me the okay at this point. It's been 3 months and I'm sick of the secrets. If you can't get behind me finding true love and happiness, then you can just keep it to yourself."

"That's beyond stupid. He's created a new kind of stupid."

"Shut the fuck up you salty bitch!" Mitch practically screamed.

"I'm sick of this arguing. We're going home now." Morgan said starting to leave. "And if I find out that either of you killed each other to not deal with the other, I will kill both of you."

We all dispersed after that. I was beyond angry and took off. Just running, no particular destination, just going. I would never understand why Auston was acting like this. He's never been so broody and grumpy in the past few years I've known him. I hope Mitch could calm him down or talk some sense into him or something.

After a while I decided to head back home. I made sure that there was no blood on my face or anything and headed out. 

I didn't notice I was walking past (y/n)'s work until I smelled her. My senses were so intune with everything about her, if I concentrated I could hear her laughing with Amy inside. It made me smile hearing her get closer. I decided to wait for them and say hi. My still heart felt like it soared when she finally walked out. It only took a second for her to see me and come running up. She gave me a kiss and a hug that warmed me up completely.

"Hi." She said with a sweet smile.

"Hi baby." I wrapped my arm around her shoulder. "Hi Amy."

"Hey Will, we were just about to meet up with Mitchell for dinner if you want to join us?"

"Yeah sure I'd like that!"

We walked only a short way before we got to a little vegan restaurant. It was a really beautiful place. It was crawling with hipsters and elegant looking snobs. I didn't see the big deal about eating meat personally but I can't really complain since I don't eat a lot of human food.

We were seated quickly and the service was lovely. The food was also good. But I enjoyed watching (y/n) giggling and having fun with her friends. It was incredibly cute. She kept looking at me with these big happy eyes that made me feel like I was flying.

"What are you looking at?" She asked with a blush coating her cheeks.

"You. I'm just wondering what I did to get you to look at me with such beautiful eyes. I was just thinking I'm lucky."

"Stop doing the voice!" She accused blushing harder hitting my shoulder. I laughed at her.

"I don't even know I'm doing it until you say something." 

"I feel like that's a lie."

"Why?"

"You've got mischief in those eyes Willy."

"You guys are so cute." Mitchell said interrupting us. I almost forgot they were sitting there.

"Thank you." She replied quietly blushing.

"Don't get all shy, you are! You guys have such a sweet relationship." Amy said smiling at me.

"I just want to make her happy."

"Stooop!" (Y/n) said hiding her face against my shoulder. She looked up and smiled. "I wanna make you happy."

"You do." I kissed her forehead before looking back at the menu. "Does anyone want dessert?"

"No we're okay. We were about to get our check and head out."

"Don't worry about the bill, I'll cover it."

"Oh William you don't have to do that! We didn't invite you out so that you'd pay.."

"I know you didn't. It's no problem, honest. I just want to do something nice for you guys."

"Are you sure?" Mitchell said still looking very unsure.

"Absolutely positive. You guys go ahead."

"Alright I guess. It was nice meeting you William, nice seeing you again (y/n)."

"You too! I'll see you Saturday! Amy I'll see you tomorrow. We're meeting at the arena right?"

"Yep! I'll see you then!"

"Would you like any dessert?" She asked putting her hand on my shoulder. I shrugged it off but she put it back. I rolled my eyes at her disrespect.

"I don't but she would."

"What would she like?"

"Maybe you should ask her." I said losing the smile. She did the same and rolled her eyes towards (y/n).

"What do you want?"

"Willy I-" she looked really uncomfortable and it made me upset.

"Well? What do you want?"

"I um-"

"Spit it out."

"We'll take the bill please. We're not going to sit here and be treated this way." I said speaking up for my sweet girl.

"Oh um alright." She gave me the bill and left quickly. I put some money down and stood up with her coat to slip over her shoulders.

"Let's go baby, we can stop somewhere for dessert if you want something." I took her hand and led her out. She was still quiet. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah."

"Are you sure? You seem upset."

"It's dumb, just forget about it."

"Hey, don't say that. It's not dumb if it's bothering you." I pulled her over to a bench when I sat down and pulled her to sit on my lap. "Tell me what's bothering you."

"It was just that girl."

"I'm sorry she was so rude to you."

"It's not even that. I didn't like her flirting with you. I'm sorry I told you it's dumb."

"Is that what she was doing? I thought she was just being annoying."

"Will." She whined.

"I'm sorry darling but I really don't care. She could've been standing there naked and she couldn't have stolen my attention from you." She looked at me quietly for a minute and I was worried about what she was thinking before she broke into a big smile.

"I love you. I know that it's crazy early and you absolutely don't have to say it back, I just needed to say it. But please say something because my anxiety is threw the fucking roof right now." She said with a nervous laugh. I could hear how fast her heart was beating and it made me worried for a second before I realized it was just her normal heart racing. Funny that my lovely little human had a normal racing heartbeat.

"Do you honestly think for a second that I haven't completely fallen for you?"

"I don't know."

"Stop with your insecurities. I love you. As cliche as it sounds this was a love at first sight kind of thing for me."

"Me too." She said smiling super big.

"Let's walk." I said lifting us both off the bench making her squeal.

"Willy put me down!"

"Never."

"William!"

"Fine, fine." I gave her a long kiss before setting her down just for her to stumble. "Watch out bambi."

"Shut the fuck up. You can't kiss me like that and expect me to not be affected." She grumbled, taking my hand.

What happened next happened in slow motion for me, which was really saying something because everything usually moves really fast. A car slipping on slush, (y/n) turning in fear to see the car coming towards us, me pulling her to the other side of me, covering her body as the car crushed into mine. All slow motion. I was so terrified of losing her that I completely threw caution to the wind to save her. I looked around but we were on a pretty empty street. The driver was alive but unconscious. I looked down to (y/n) and she was just staring at me. I stared back not knowing what to say at all.

"Did you just pull an Edward Cullen on me?"

"No don't be ridiculous. Do you need to go to a doctor?"

"No I'm okay."

"We should check your head."

"No."

"Stubborn." I muttered, calling Morgan. She fell asleep. "Morgan I need you to come here right now. I fucked up."

also my answers here are suuuuper long, because i’m a rambling idiot who’s way too involved in my OC’s. so uhhhh sorry in advance,,,,,

1. what radio station(s) do you listen to?

Vana’s a Samurai stan. She wishes she wasn’t. But, y’know, Morro Rock it is. Once upon a time when she was an even angrier teen, though, she’d listen to shit just like Ritual FM.

(My music taste is all over the place, and though blues is technically my fav bc i love old music, i never listen to it in 2077. So I switch between Body Heat, the Dirge, Vexelstrom for like 2 songs, and ofc, Morro Rock. But of all stations, there’s at least one song that i HATE so I can never stick to one for a whole ride sknsksjsjs)

3. how did you feel about Johnny that first night in the apartment, and how does it differ from what you feel now after everything?

so i’m gonna cut a read-more here because i decided to just lore dump Vana x Johnny here so uhhhhhh rip also //SPOILERS//

Vana is an extremely, seriously private, guarded person. Before Johnny, Panam, Kerry- Jackie was the only person she’d ever truly let near her, to get to know her. So obviously waking up to someone else living inside her fucking head was one of the worst things that’s ever happened to her. Her past is also something she’s not particularly proud of, so Johnny getting to witness all that is traumatising. Getting Johnny out of her head was priority number one, even if digging the chip out would kill her.

But after getting fucked over by the VBs, and both of them thinking she was gonna die, Johnny takes her to that abandoned hotel in Pacifica- it’s the first time he’s given her even a sliver of kindness, and the first time she’s ever openly expressed her fears to him, even if he could already sense them before. Oaths and promises are something she holds to incredibly high importance, so obviously when Johnny gives her his dog-tags, ‘proof of my promise’, she never, ever lets them go, never takes them off. (she still doesn’t. they keep her grounded. holding them to calm herself has become a reflex, for whatever reason.)

Everything just seemed to slowly change after that. For two people who hate vulnerability, it’s the only thing that helped them actually see each other. As the Relic continues to take over, they both understand each other more, feel each other more- and eventually it becomes hard to discern where Vana ends and Johnny begins. In cliché Johnny x V fashion like yeah duh it goes further,,,, cockwhore!Vana,,,,,, but with that they also start to become extremely possessive and jealous over one another- Johnny immediately on the defensive about whoever comes close to her, Vana selfishly hiding and keeping Johnny’s existence to herself, even if it slows the hunt for a remedy to the chip- to the point of seriously toxic co-dependency. It’s full of volatile ups-and-downs, fights and make-ups, and Vana almost comes to like the fact that she never has to explain nor hide what thoughts and feelings pass through her mind, no matter how dark or vulnerable. She prefers most things to remain unsaid, but values the fact that they both have a clear, transparent understanding of each other regardless.

But there's also... softer moments. When Johnny puts aside his ego for once, he learns to like the quiet that Vana does, brief as it can be sometimes. He'll sort of just... stay around the room, even if just to procrastinate retreating back into her head, because they realise they like each other's silent, wordless company. He'll wake her up from nightmares, hold her neck and kiss her back to sleep, or until the sun comes up, if she can't. It's all tender things they often pretend doesn't even happen, out of pride, I think, but they both know deep down that those are really the best parts.

Comes to a place where she suddenly hits a wall, and realises, I don’t want him to leave.

She’s never the same again after Mikoshi.

(But uhh anyway fuck V I’m horny on main for Keanu so i was here for the whole riiiiiide yeeeeeee)

5. how do your loved ones (LI, found family, etc) feel about you being a merc? or if you’ve given up the life now that everything’s finished, what was their reaction?

Vana grew up in a rich corp family, and after all the shit she’s endured just to appease her father, don’t think anyone could hate corps more than she does (some details of her past here!!) So when Arasaka kicks her out and Jackie finally convinces her to start merc work, it’s amazing how quickly she slips into the role, almost like she was made for it- an anonymous face within the city, free to roam and drift as she wants, relying on herself and herself only.

Vana works quickly and quietly enough (though not at all with clean hands), relying on stealth and netrunning, so she doesn’t cause too much of a noise that’d have her loved ones (rare as they are) all too concerned. Judy isn’t scared Vana’d be caught in gunfire, because when Vana works, her targets rarely know she’s even there. She’s smart, cunning. Panam appreciates that these skills have helped her out, so she can’t complain. River- who is unfortunately more fond of Vana than she is of him, given that she’s not too comfortable at accepting affection- isn’t too happy about the life she leads, but hey, it’s her skills as a merc and as one of NC’s most adept netrunners that he even stood a chance of finding Randy as quick as he did, so he feels indebted to her for that. Kerry thinks it’s fuckin awesome that she gets to do as she wants and provides for herself, bestieeees

Given she isn’t all that close with many people- keeping her distance and all- the only people who seriously worry about her are folks like Vik, Misty, and Mama Welles, especially the latter two, who knew how much Jackie meant to her, and how easily she cracks under the weight of grief. The only thing, really, that concerns everybody around her, is how insatiable her bloodlust becomes, and how much she'd throw away just to try and quell it.

Johnny’s just in it for the ride. Rather she work for herself than a filthy corp, anyway.

After Mikoshi, losing Johnny, making it to the major leagues, she fuckin... just doesn't care anymore. She hates the big glass house that was practically forced onto her (reminds her too much of her stifling corp childhood), she hates that she has 20 cars that clog up her garage and not just her trusty red Yaiba Kusanagi, hates that folks keep giving her all this shiny golden shit that she doesn't want, like any of it's worth a damn. Since then she's hardly in one place- never at home if she can help it, and either wanders aimlessly around the streets and crashes over at Kerry's to sleep through grief. It isn't the merc life she wants to leave, but major leagues turned out to be a glittering pile of dogshit she wants no part in. She only really stays there because Jackie would've wanted it.

(i’m a lazy bitch like i don’t wanna be a merc. i wanna be one of those cute npc’s with the glowy earrings and bunny backpacks and skimpy plastic skirts, who picks up noodles on the way home to go watch watson whore. in my ideal life i am NOT the main character snnsmsnsks)

15. which NPC is your bff?

Kerry. Kerry is Vana’s ride or die. No fucking questions asked. Kerry’s the only person (besides Johnny, i guess) as close to her as Jackie was. He’s really the only person that ever gets her to smile, like really, stupidly, goofily smile, and despite being almost complete opposites, they just understand each other so well. Whenever they need something, they're the first person they'll call. Happens so often that just as Vana sifts through her contacts to find his, Kerry's already calling for her first. They're practically joint at the hip.

They both live loud, fast lives, but also know how to make time for silence and introspection, something they both need to stay grounded. Vana doesn't buy into his zen-wellness-yoga crap, but sure, she tries copying a couple moves while he's doing it on a lazy afternoon, before scoffing how this is fuckin' dumb and retreats back to the couch. Also, as much as she hates being reminded of the wealth that came with her corpo upbringing, she loves using up all his expensive products, and tends to klep a bottle of his shampoo when she runs out. Cute how she thinks he doesn't notice.

After what happened in Mikoshi, she practically lives at Kerry's place, just dozing away miserably as he lounges by the pool, or curl up on the couch to mindlessly watch his old Samurai tapes (he doesn't like it much, but if it helps her through whatever shit she's going through, he's not gonna take that away from her). On better days, when she actually pulls herself out of bed, he teaches her to play guitar, slipping in a couple tricks Johnny taught him. Funnily enough, the whole thing helps him find some closure too.

18. what’s your dream cyberware (either something that was shown in lore that wasn’t available in game or mental creation of your own)?

Anything that helps Vana become more deadly at stealth and netrunning. The most eddies she’s ever blown are on increasingly powerful cyberdecks, cooling systems, netrunning gear she can comfortably slip on under a jacket and boots- she likes convenience and functionality, but she needs it to be comfortable, too. She’d fucking kill for anything that lets her scale silently up walls and across ceilings, though- like a spider- and anything that lets her get her hands reeeeal bloody, but quietly. Guess that’s just called a knife, though.

5. Edward has the exact same coloring as her sister before they were both changed - Auburn hair and golden eyes. Her sister's are described as brown, I think, but I hc them as a light golden brown. So in my head, when Victoria sees him, the similarity is jarring. If you replace Edward with Edythe in the original saga, I think Victoria is even sooner to let him kill her (because that is how the fight has read to me since we learned Victoria actively suppressed her power (of survival!) during the fight). I think she'd keep seeing her sister as they fought, and when she killed her, the survivor's guilt might finally be eased by the image of Edythe walking away, because it'd look/feel like Anne was walking away and surviving while Victoria died. :(

4. I see her as having a very isolating childhood. Smeyer makes a point of saying that of the two sisters, Anne was the beauty. Their mother was a single parent and their father is implied to be the master of the house that she served at, so the whole family was probably ostracized. But I imagine Victoria, w/ her witchy features (orange hair and green eyes) and initially wilder personality, getting the worst of it. Sort of like Anne of Green Gables, but with less access to education, and a prettier older sister who was treated better (though not always well).

3. Victoria doesn't really know how to read. She was never taught as a human, and as part of Hilda's coven, they'd all still been adjusting to having a family at all, and hadn't had time to teach or learn anything more from each other yet when they were taken from her. Then, isolating herself for two centuries, she didn't need to. After James hunted and recruited her, he always responded to any expression of interest in the ability with derision, so she dropped it. She's picked up on certain things - it has been four centuries, after all. But only small things, mostly some parts of words common to street and shop signs. After she transforms Riley and the newborns, this becomes a real weakness. She can't understand if they write notes to each other - the real reason Riley is as powerful as he is is because he can make sure the newborns aren't using written messages to defy her.

2. Her ability to feel what she needs to do to survive is the vampiric manifestation of the coping/survival mechanisms resulting from PTSD caused by the abuse she and her sister when through.

1. Victoria's power to survive has more potential than she ever knew - it could've grown to be very powerful - and also had more of a grip on her than we saw. When her life is directly in danger, the pull feels like a yank on her brain and muscles - she hardly has to do anything to evade attacks. When her life is not in direct danger, it's like an unseen force is lightly touching her nerves - less of a pull, more of a gentle nudge. This is the force that disappears when her sister and coven dies, and reappears with James. She joins him because it "feels right". When he dies, it disappears again. The reason the nudge existed with Anne and again with James, is because the power to survive doesn't just move her to protect herself, it also moves her to protect the part of her life that she values, cherishes, loves - whatever makes her survival matter. Because protecting the reason she wants to live, keeps her alive as well.

The nudge that existed with Anne, was one that told her to keep Anne, and then all of Hilda's coven, alive. But there was no way to save her sisters once the Volturi arrived to claim Heidi, so it was either herself or nothing, so her body was yanked into running even as she yelled for her sisters to run. Once the last of her coven was killed, there was no one else she loved, and she had no real love for life, so the "nudge" went away completely.

The "nudge" that James inspired was because the possibility of him being the death of her was Never off the table, so her powers nudged her to keep him happy. She'd get random nudges to run away sometimes, but only for split seconds before he was paying attention again and the urge to stay resumed.

When he dies, the nudge disappears, because nothing has changed since her coven died. She still doesn't care enough about anything to have a purpose. So she cobbles together her own purpose - revenge, because that's what you do when you love someone, isn't it, and she needs something to break the silence. But it doesn't fix the problem, and eventually she doesn't want to go on. So, knowing how to survive and knowing what that means, she goes through the fight defying her power, avoiding its use, cursing Edward for taking away James because that was the only reason she could find to keep going.
