bella describing edward in twilight: he’s so beautiful. I’m completely dazzled by him
bree tanner describing edward in her book:
[Transcript:
YouTuber Mike’s Mic: “Could he be crustier, do you reckon? I don’t actually think he could be crustier. He’s like a moldy piece of bread with a moldy piece of cheese on it put under the grill, but the tray in the grill is too high, and the cheese melts and then burns, and the cheese fumes of the moldy cheese get stuck to the grill, so then any future thing that you put in that grill is gonna smell like moldy cheese. That’s his vibe.”

Bree Tanner deserved better, and not just from a narrative standpoint (although I think it would have been interesting to see how the story changed if she’d remained alive), but in regards to Bella. Bree gets only a handful of paragraphs in Eclipse, but we see Bella describe and empathize with her, even noting that the girl looked young, perhaps only fifteen. And then Bree is dismembered by Felix, and she’s never mentioned again.
Tumblr media
Imagine if Bella had hung onto that little girl, felt remorse and sympathy for her. Bree was, after all, turned and then subsequently killed because of Bella. All of the newborns were. But we don’t hear anything about them, only how they were violent monsters. They were all human once, but the narrative ignores this. Bree was an actual child. If it wasn’t for Bella, and by extension, the Cullens, Bree would have lived a normal life in Seattle.
Bella should have thought about all of this. It should have been in the back of her mind: guilt and sadness and maybe a little self-loathing too. And the continued fear that maybe when she went through the change, she would be that uncontrollable, bloodthirsty creature too.
Tumblr media
But of course, Stephanie Meyer chose to ignore Bella’s trauma per usual, and so we never hear of Bree again; instead we get sappy romance and a vampire-hybrid baby, Bella’s trauma forgotten and never truly addressed. But that’s nothing new here.
Anyway, Bree Tanner deserved better.

i love reading the end of the second life of Bree Tanner just for the perspective, i mean, do you realize the power that jasper emanate????
"And then another vampire with yellow eyes joined us. As soon as I saw him, any sense of security I had felt with those strangers vanished.
He was blond, like the first one, but taller and leaner. His skin was completely covered in scars, more clustered around the neck and jaw area. Some of the small marks on his arm were recent, but the rest weren't from today's skirmish. He had been in more fights than I could imagine, and had never lost. His honey-colored eyes gleamed, and his stance exuded the barely contained violence of a furious lion.
The moment he saw me, he crouched to pounce.
'Jasper!' Carlisle warned him.
Jasper straightened a bit and fixed his overly wide eyes on Carlisle.
'What's going on here?'
'She doesn't want to fight, he has surrendered.' The scarred vampire frowned, and I felt a sudden, unexpected wave of frustration despite having no idea what was frustrating me."
"Jasper, I think we need to take a risk," Carlisle said slowly. "We are not the Volturi. We follow their rules, but we don't dispose of others' lives lightly. We'll explain ourselves." "They could think we've created our own newborns to defend ourselves." "But we haven't. And even if we had, no indiscretion has occurred here, only in Seattle. There's no law against creating vampires as long as you control them." "It's too dangerous." Carlisle touched Jasper on the shoulder to gauge his reaction. "Jasper, we can't kill this girl." Jasper scowled at the kind-eyed man, and suddenly, I felt myself getting angry. He wasn't going to harm the amiable vampire or the woman he loved, that was certain. He sighed, and I knew everything was fine. My anger dissipated. "I don't like this," he said, but he was calmer now. "At least let me take charge of her. You two don't know how to handle someone who's been out of control for so long." "Of course, Jasper," the woman conceded. "But be gentle." Jasper rolled his eyes.
"Hey, you," Jasper said to me, again with bitterness. "Come with us. Don't make a wrong move or I'll end you." I felt anger rising again when he glared at me, and a small part of me wanted to roar back at him and show my teeth, but I had a feeling that was exactly the excuse he was looking for. Jasper paused as if he had just thought of something. "Close your eyes," he ordered me. I hesitated. Had he decided to kill me after all? "Do it!" I gritted my teeth and closed my eyes. I felt twice as defenseless as before. "Follow the sound of my voice and don't open your eyes. Open them, and you're in trouble, got it?" I nodded and wondered what it was he didn't want me to see. I felt some relief that he cared about protecting a secret. There was no reason to do so if he intended to kill me outright. "This way." I walked slowly behind him, careful not to give him any excuses.
"He led me closer and closer to the muffled crackling of the flames, so close that I could feel the smoke caressing my skin. I was aware that he could have killed me at any moment, but the proximity of the fire still made me nervous. "Sit here. Eyes closed."
The ground was warm from the sun and the fire. I stayed very still and tried to concentrate on appearing harmless, but I felt his piercing gaze on me, and it unsettled me."
"My eyelids flickered, but Jasper growled furiously at me, and I shut them tightly. I hadn't seen anything except the dense, lavender-colored smoke."
"Without any prior warning sound, something touched me and pressed firmly on both sides of my head. I panicked, opening my eyes and jerking my head upward in an attempt to break free from the hold, only to find Jasper's warning gaze inches from my face. "Enough," he said sharply, pushing me back down to the ground. I could only hear him, and I realized it was his hands forcefully pressing my head, completely covering my ears. "Close your eyes," he ordered me again, probably at a normal volume, but to me, it was nothing more than a whisper."
"Jasper removed his hands from my ears. 'You better open your eyes,' he said from a few steps away. The way he said it scared me. I quickly scanned around for the danger hinted at in his voice. My entire field of vision was obstructed by dark smoke. Jasper was frowning close to me. He clenched his teeth and watched me with an almost... terrified expression. Not as if he was afraid of me, but as if he was frightened because of me. I remembered what he had said earlier about me putting them in danger with something called the Volturi. I wondered who these Volturi could be. I couldn't imagine anything that this dangerous, scarred vampire could fear."
"Jasper hissed angrily at me and shoved me again, forcing me back to the ground from my crouching position."
i mean, fuck me jazz.

this is may be a dumb question but i saw something about it in the tags and you're a wordsmith and i do so adore your fics, so if the cullens adopted bree tanner, what do you think that would look like? like what would the dynamics be? (especially between bree, jasper and alice?)
There is no such thing as a dumb question anon! I have 0 recollection about any Bree tags, so we're going on totally fresh vibes.
Also wordsmith? I wiggle, thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoy my fics!
I also need to be totally transparent: I never read Bree Tanner. I know the plot, but like Midnight Sun, I never felt moved to engage with it. I also found that Bree's early life and Alice's was so similar it was slightly silly. So please excuse me if I fudge the details.
If the Cullens had adopted Bree... well. That would put a major spanner in the works because newborns and Bella would not mix well.
This means the family would have to split up, and that would be controversial: Jasper would have to go with the newborn, and Alice would go with Jasper because dealing with a newborn would not be a great time for Jasper. Rose and Emmett would probably go with them - Emmett could be useful with Bree, and Rose would both want to get away from Bella, and want to go with Emmett. I could see only Carlisle, Edward, and maybe Esme staying behind in Forks with Bella, honestly.
But that's a pretty dramatic twist in the Cullen dynamic and separation would definitely effect how Bree bonded with everyone - she would automatically be closer to the family she was 'raised' with, and defer to Jasper and Emmett before she did Carlisle, Edward or Esme. I could see Bree going to Jasper or Emmett for permission/help rather than Carlisle being something that really calls into question the dynamics of the family - and I could see Edward, Esme, and Bella as perceiving that as an insult to Carlisle. But whilst Bree is grateful to Carlisle for negotiating her freedom, her loyalties lie with the family members that 'raised' her and protected her. And I can see all four of them being very protective over her; ultimately the family would have this unspoken divide into two covens simply because of the split, and it would take time and communication to really heal it.
That's quite a complicated scenario, so let's backtrack and say that it was possible for Bree to start in Forks with the full Cullen family and become one of them. (We'll get through the rest of the family before we get to Alice and Jasper.)
Esme would dote on her; she would mother the ever-loving shit out of her - especially when Bree told her about her upbringing and her missing mom. I think Bree would take the place of the 'baby' of the family because she's both the newborn and the youngest of the family. Bree would absolutely soak all of this up, and probably drive everyone else nuts hogging Esme for the first few months.
Carlisle would be very kind to her, try to help her transition to animal blood, and very carefully give her the rundown on the laws of vampires, and the family rules. I can see Bree being wary of him as a father figure because of her father's abuse, but also be relieved by the fact he's protected her and he's telling her everything she needs to know. He saved her from death, that's huge considering both her bio father and Riley sent her to death. There would be a lot of respect there, and eventually affection, but it would be as openly affectionate as the relationship Bree has with Esme.
Rosalie would be distant at first, very put-out that they've adopted a stray and be very, very frustrated as Bree learns control and how to behave as a human. But as time passed, I could see Rose thriving as a Big Sister - teaching Bree how to do things like change a tire and take care of a car; teaching her to drive; how to throw a punch. Rose would be the one to go searching for Bree's mom and finding out that Mr Tanner was charged for her murder would enrage her. Rose is definitely the one who organizes a burial and headstone for Mrs Tanner, though she lets Esme and Carlisle break the news to Bree.
Emmett would love Bree. A kid sister? One who is doesn't mind being tossed in the air and is happy to go bear hunting multiple times a week? He's hooked. And I think that easy-going acceptance would go so far with Bree. He's just... friend-shaped, and he's got her back. If she's out of control, Emmett's got her in a bear hug and he doesn't even hold a grudge if she bites him. She feels very safe with Emmett, and loves playing video games with him, and more than once Rose has walked into their bedroom to find Bree lounging on their bed talking to him whilst Emmett sorts comic books or something.
Edward resents the fuck out of Bree because he sees her as taking the place reserved for Bella - the baby sister, the newborn. He's frustrated that they have to deal with Bree's newborn year, because no one will change Bella until Bree is in control and safe to be around - Jasper would flat out refuse and leave if he had to deal with two newborns, and having two at the same time - especially of opposing ages - would be a recipe for chaos. But he's also intensely aware that Bree was in literal hell both as a human and as a vampire, and he tries very hard to be kind and mostly just comes off as the bothered older brother. He's also the one that picks up on the fact that Diego is most likely dead, but she's so hopeful he cannot tell her otherwise. Bree tries to get on Edward's good side, but she just keeps messing it up - touching his sheet music, his CDs, accidentally insulting things Edward holds dear. It would be funny if it wasn't going so very wrong.
Bella as a human is scared of Bree, because it's so very obvious Bree struggles in Bella's presence. and because of Bree's association with Victoria and with Riley. Bree's pretty curious about Bella, but they don't have a relationship until Bella is a vampire. As a vampire, Bella is quite... dismissive of Bree; because of her shield, Bella doesn't experience the bloodlust Bree has, and she's married to Edward, where Bree has lost her mate. Bella suffers from an inability to see from other's perspectives and her own privilege in her change, so she has a low tolerance for Bree - especially around Renesmee. It takes time and they make peace, but they aren't ever close.
Jasper. Oh boy. Jasper has a very complicated relationship with Bree because of his time in the South. He hates being around newborns because of that; their emotions change so fast, they can be triggered from calm to frothing rage instantly, they bite, and they are so strong. Having Bree join the family was not on Jasper's agenda at all, but he's also past the point of executing newborns for existing and accepting that Esme and Carlisle want to keep her. He sees her presence as part of his penance and a step closer to being a better man.
Jasper would be the one that did the most monitoring of her because of his gift and his experience. It would take a lot out of him, and he'd hover at the sidelines, quiet and waiting. I think the stress of knowing that after Bree is 'done', he's expected to go and do exactly the same thing with Bella. That would be stressful and exhausting and depressing for him. And he would be the first line of fire when Bree was out of control - getting bitten by her would be a fun adventure into flashbacks of the south for him.
But I also don't think that he'd hold that against her at all. He'd be kind and he'd be patient because he knows what it's like to be lied to by a leader. He knows what it's like to wake up in a hellscape of death and pain and destruction. And he knows what it's like to be given a second chance by the Cullens. I think he'd be a lot warmer to her after her newborn period was up, and I think he'd eventually joke about any bite scars she gave him. I definitely think that Bree would see him as a protector figure, because of how he monitored her, but also someone worthy of respect, fitting in somewhere between Edward and Carlisle. He would also do a lot of the legwork for Rose trying to track down Mrs Tanner.
Alice would be Jasper's main support during Bree's newborn year, and probably be the ambassador between the pair so that Bree doesn't feel intimidated, rejected, or threatened by Jasper, and Jasper didn't get overwhelmed by Bree and lose his temper. I can also see Bree appreciating Alice's makeovers and becoming Alice's favorite person to dress up because she never had that opportunity before and Alice prides herself on being a very stereotypical big sister with movie nights and dance parties - something that Bree loves and would cause a little tension with Bella and Edward.
Alice would also essentially confirm that Diego was gone to Edward. She would also kind of confirm that Fred was alive, mostly because he makes her visions go wonky because of his gift, which I think Bree would be delighted by. Bree would like the reassurance that Alice's gift offered, that she could check that she was doing things right and she was safe. When it came to the next high school, I could see Alice and Bree both being enrolled as freshman so that Bree has someone to watch over her and she's got one friend in class to have a normal high school experience.
I hope those were the kind of takes you were looking for Anon!

Eclipse Book Review
Tumblr media
Eclipse
Author: Stephanie Meyer
Description: As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob - knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?
Rating: ★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Review: My expectations of Eclipse upon deciding to read it were low. However, I did not foresee it being this bad.
There’s just so much my patience can take when characters sour and grow petulant, and in Eclipse they all became insufferable. Not constantly, of course. Some characters much more than others, and some only in periods of time. Nonetheless, there was not a single character that stayed consistently likeable, especially the main trio.
In addition to this, Meyer’s lexicon is truly questionable. Such as using words as coercion and forcing in moments were the words were uncalled for. And then later not using the appropriate words for problematic situations and/or conversations. Eclipse is built on this, every brick of its foundation representing the questionable beliefs and morals of its characters.
Any few salvageable parts of Eclipse were decimated by the mountain of terrible writing and disgusting tries of concealing SA and grooming behind the thinly veiled excuse of its book genre. For instance, the fact that Jacob is not the first werewolf to imprint on a baby. Or the fact that Meyer’s bends the significance of the age of characters at her will to fit the narrative.
Besides this, the plot is severely lacking. There’s barley any pay-off for the already poor amount of build up, and in the end the insufferable love triangle overshadows the rest. There were just too many unforgivable acts occurring, too many moments where I screamed silently to cope with the absurd insanity, to see any redeeming qualities.
Eclipse reads like a desperate attempt to “spice things up” and instead managed to make the whole book series much, much worse.

excerpt from a book reads:
"She's got the most marvelous hair - sort of golden, but very deep, like a jolly old sunset - that's it, a jolly old sunset. You know, I never noticed things like sunsets until lately. Poetry too, there's a lot more in poetry than I ever thought."
"Red hair," said Tuppence unemotionally, writing it down."

Twilight Advent Day 21: What 5 characters always have with them
Tanya- A spare shirt (linking to my genderfluid Tanya HC), either a tighter or looser one depending on what she was already wearing.
Esme- Pen and paper, so she can write down or draw ideas for building designs
Caius- A dagger, he just does, he doesn't need it, but likes them, it annoys Aro
Tia- Rings, I don't know why but she gives me vibes of having a mass amount of rings on her person at any given point
Bree- A book, this is canon (from memory) and I love it so much. I feel like she is the type to read a fantasy or sci-fi depending on her mood.

Hi I couldn't help but notice from the Bree Tanner book that Diego and Bree seem to have similar interests to Edward and Bella (music and reading). I don't know if this is intentional to parallel their characters but it does make me wonder, had they both survived and lived happily either with the Cullens, Fred, or even with the Denalis in Alaska, if they could have had different interests or hobbies from the other characters?
Bree DOES feel a lot like Bella. I think SM even said that Bree is better than the average newborn at controlling herself, just not as amazing as Bella. So even there Bree isn't really a good example of a newborn, and SM couldn't quite bring herself to actual write that experience. Which, I mean, fine. Whatever. It's her story. It's just weird that she goes out of her way to tell us how wild and out of control newborns are, and then the two narrators who actually experience it are . . . unusually controlled. I get that Bree is supposed to be a "mirror" to Bella (literally the name of the chapter) but at the same time it's frustrating that the only two examples we get of newborn narrators are outside the norm. We never get a look at the average experience.
I could definitely have seen Bree being into music in a different way than Edward and Bella. Edward is composer and pianist, and both he and Bella seem to be kind of casual fans of music. But maybe Bree could be more like the average teen. Just her fangirling over her favorite bands, and I guess back in 2005 maybe still buying the albums or at least downloading them. Magazines with interviews, music videos, etc. We could also embrace the Spider-man and secret ninja club stuff and let her be into comic books rather than Bella's classics. She would have missed out on the Marvel Cinematic Universe because those came later, but there were other superhero movies.
Diego is harder, I feel like we didn't get to know him as much, since he and Bree just fell into insta-love. He was only a little bit older than her, but he had dreamed of going to college and getting and education. Fred is the scientist, of course, but maybe Diego would have some other academic interest. Maybe he's really good with math and puzzles, or loves to write. That would be pretty cute with Bree who loves to read. He could write stories or draw comics that she would love, and she would in turn encourage him.
Like, just let them be teens, right? They aren't like the Cullen kids who have been teens for decades. They are just ACTUAL TEENS who have only been vampires for a few months. They both had difficult home lives and now that they are free of that, let them have some fun and be teens for awhile.
