A refreshing take on the Cherry Magic prologue that unfortunately fell (a ltitle) short in the last few minutes.
Cherry Magic Thailand chooses the Jdrama route where we first meet Achi without his powers. It was nice to see the difference in culture immediately; from Achi’s living conditions to means of transport. Though I thought having Achi immediately lament on his life choices 2 minutes in was maybeeeee too quick.
It’s very interesting that Rock/Rokkaku here is introduced as Achi’s subordinate and their whole first interaction, with Achi feeling awkward that despite their big age difference he hardly holds a senior position over him, which in turn further proves Achi’s averageness. Plus, having Rock approach and get attached to Achi is going to rationalize an aspect of Karan’s jealousy which I am very excited to see. I liked the flashback montage about how different Karan and Achi’s progress in the workplace was. It gives the viewers a better idea of Achi’s mix of jealousy and admiration towards Karan and it’s also a first look into Achi’s feelings of inferiority that will eventually become an obstacle to his and Karan’s relationship.I also like how in the most recent flashback you can see Karan kind of burnt out, which should be around the time he falls (or has already fallen) for Achi.
*BTW Karan here is supposed to have won employee of the year 7 years in a row (from the FIRST year he joined) and honestly I find that less realistic than I found jdrama Kurosawa being in love with Adachi for 7 years
Besides that, however, I found some other scenes unnecessary and very exposition-y, even for a pilot episode. For example, learning about Achi’s trauma regarding romantic relationships should have come up later imo.
Unlike other adaptations this one didn’t really feel the need to excessively point out Karan’s popularity among women, which is a very vital plot point later on; I am not really big fan of that trope so I found it kind of refreshing; and it will come sooner or later.
I am VERY interested in Pai and Dujdao. Big fan of adding another relevant female character and one who is nice to Achi, at that! Pai is leaning to Fujisaki’s more extroverted and mischievous side while I think Dujdao has some of Fujisaki’s qualities as well but her role is more equivalent to a nicer Urabe-san or Achi’s very own Asahina-senpai. Side note, the implication that Pai-Dujdao are some kind of cupids that help Karan seduce Achi is a concept I can 100% get behind. It also seems like the boss will be a recurring character so maybe he’s the Asahina?  Anyway, the character department has me invested.
And speaking of characters - Jinta! JInta is…a character who is… not Tsuge. A lot of people are not fans of Tsuge, especially Jdrama Tsuge. But well I don’t know if the solution is to completely change him? He looks and acts way younger which is very contradictory to his role in the manga; Especially to his relationship with Minato. But, I won’t judge too hard yet since they haven’t even interacted on screen. The udon backstory is an AMAZING detail and the GREATEST introduction of the side couple in any version of the story.
So. Nothing is going to top the jdrama elevator scene and every adaptation is going to have to make peace with that. The lighting work during Kurosawa’s imagination in the office was a work of art and Achi’s (and Rock’s later) reaction was hilarious. The sound effects also got me a few times ngl.
Part 4 however…disappointed me. First off they replace the scarf scene with a way less emotionally charged umbrella scene. To which I ask, do you know how hard it is to make an umbrella scene seem so unromantic? And then we have Karan asking Achi to stay over and BEFORE Achi agrees, he reads Karan’s mind and his wild imagination. And then…agrees? The entire gag of the scene relies on Achi agreeing BEFORE he sees all that stuff and then immediately regretting it. Having him regret it after the fact is … pointless? I also found it very abrupt to jump to domestic life scenarios fantasies from the get-go when in all other version’s Karan is just contend with Achi being at his place (with his designated pyjamas). He’s a horny bastard in general, I am not denying the mole scene earlier but I felt like the domestic fantasies being shown so early on was a bit fanservice-y for the Taynew fans? (As someone who doesn’t gaf about these men outside their roles and as someone who knows Kurosawa personally this is what it felt like to me.)
Karan's smirk was precious though hehe.
TLDR the show has a very promising and compelling beginning but declines in quality in the last minutes. That being said, I still have faith that the next episodes will be better. The next episode clips I’ve seen are promising and since there was a lot of exposition (and scenes from later chapters) in the pilot it will probably help the pace of the later episodes. Personally, the jdrama hooked me with EP3 (the events of which will be in EP2 of the Thai one) so I think (and hope) the show will only get better from here!

Okay
Normally, most AUs i’ve seen is abt Saiki having powers nd shi right? What abt, Kuboyasu having powers? Mainly telepathy!
Hello Yellow, this is what I mean btw XD
Its a Cherry Magic AU!! Yes the one where the MC is a 30 y/o virgin nd becomes a wizard bcs of it.
..Except Kuboyasu doesnt get rid of it bcs his interest in sex is low nd his partner doesnt rlly like sex.
Said partner is Saiki ofc bcs well, who doesnt like kubosai?
It starts off with Kuboyasu being a 29 y/o virgin, whos working as a teacher. Despite going out often, he hangs around with his friends, which he doesn’t feel any romantic attraction to. Or so he thought.
In comes Saiki, who works in a manga company, taking after his dad. Except hes doing much better nd has a higher pay! Or sumn.. i’ll think abt it?
They both meet up unintentionally nd hung out together. Saiki probably liked Kuboyasu way before they turned 30 or something but Kuboyasu doesnt notice.
Until he turns 30, he gains telepathic powers, allowing him to read minds nd stuff. Being afraid of other ppl having the exact same power, he tried to close off his mind but to no avail. It isnt until a while later does Saiki realises that Kuboyasu can read minds that he tried to block out all thoughts of his evergrowing crush nd stuff.
Saiki nd Kuboyasu are Adachi nd Kurosawa respectively except they are also much much more different than the original two!
Fujisaki is probably Aiura or Teruhashi ( im thinking Aiura )
Tsuge is Kaido
Im not sure abt Minato, Rokkaku and Urabe..
Well Urabe can be Saiko? Saiki’s possible manager.
Give me ur thoughts!! I have so much more to write but well its like, 12 sumn nd i have stuff to do tmr so i gotta wake up super early—
PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU LIKE IT THOUGH I LOVE KUBOSAI ND CHERRY MAGIC SO SO

Cherry Magic! - A Modern BL Hit on Overcoming Rom-Trauma
Tumblr media
“For the first time in my life, there’s someone I want to get to know better. -Male 30 Y/O”
A delightfully charming BL manga has caught my attention due to the hype it’s gotten from various manga-reading circles. Yuu Toyota’s “Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!” has a really wacky concept, but there’s nothing wacky about how difficult it is for adult virgins to get into romantic relationships at a late stage in their life.
The story is about a 30-year old named Kiyoshi Adachi, who is still a virgin. After multiple attempts to have sex, Adachi gives up. He later discovers that at his age, he’s developed the ability to hear other people’s thoughts. For the most part, they overwhelm Adachi. When he accidentally hears the thoughts of his (very handsome) male co-worker Yuichi Kurosawa, Adachi learns that Kurosawa likes him romantically. Adachi and Kurosawa begin a slow and gradual build towards a relationship while overcoming their own insecurities.
There’s subtle societal pressure for men to lose their virginity as soon as they’re “ready” to. Movies showcase men having sex with women they fall in love with. Porn is accessible to all and viewed as a resource for men. For men, having sex with someone makes you all “grown up.” But no one talks about the what happens during and after the whole profile
For Adachi, he recalled a time at the age of 25, where he met up with a girl he liked at a restaurant hangout. However, when it was revealed that Adachi never had a girlfriend, the girl said she wasn’t sure about dating him. Adachi then swore off romance like the plague. It didn’t help when he sees his other friends being married or that other girls he liked never shared the same feelings as he did. This gets triggered when Adachi sees Kurosawa with a woman on the street, who he mistakenly thought was an ex-girlfriend.
I wonder how many people swore off romance after an experience like Adachi’s. There’s many adults who want to get into relationships at a later age, but can’t due to fear of judgment. The scary thing is how experiences like that become so ingrained in a black or white fashion. The responses become fight or flight. There’s no room for reflection.
Thankfully, Cherry Magic presents a good example of reflection. Kurosawa’s advances gives room for Adachi to think. Adachi once tells Kurosawa during a hangout that he always felt that he was depressed and wasn’t confident about his ability to be loved by those he wanted to help. But by being around Kurosawa both at and outside of work often, Adachi has a newfound sense of confidence.
When I think about what Adachi says here, I think about one good thing regarding depression. It somehow makes you more empathetic towards the things around you. In my own experience, I’ve been told how kind and nice I am towards other people. In a way, I’m sympathetic towards those who experienced bad things in life. Depression has led me to think that way.
I know most people see Adachi as a boring person, but Kurosawa doesn’t. Kindness is hard to go around and Adachi is pretty good at it. However, a side consequence is that we sometimes don’t pass on that kindness to ourselves. There’s a moment in Volume 2 where Adachi is sick and Kurosawa runs over to Adachi’s place to take care of him. Adachi doesn’t understand why Kurosawa is being nice to him. He then says he’s never had anyone taken care of him while sick outside of family and how lame he is for not having a girlfriend. But Kurosawa assures him that whoever will be his first romantic partner will have all the pleasure of introducing him to the joys of romance. It helps that Kurosawa knows how to say the right things to Adachi.
Adachi feels that he’s worthy of having someone in his life who cares about him while caring about them the same. It’s hard to admit that you want to be taken care of sometimes. And it might be harder to admit that you care about something other than yourself. The same could be said for Kurosawa as his own relationship history was full of disappointment due to people only valuing him for his looks. It wasn’t until Adachi comforts Kurosawa one time and telling him that it’s okay to feel like a loss that Cupid’s arrow hits Kurosawa’s heart.
I do see why Cherry Magic is really popular and has become one of Square Enix Books’ top manga hits. Both characters with bad relationship experiences getting together to save one another and make life meaningful. Plus, don’t be afraid of intimacy when your body reacts in a way that needs it. Modern life disconnects us from hidden feelings that genuinely tell us that it’s okay to fall in love when it comes. Love is sometimes messy, but it makes someone feel truly alive with all of the emotions that come with it.
Toyota seems to imply that those kinds of connections are the real magic of life and it doesn’t have to take a wizardly amount of knowledge to nurture them.

For the ask game: 13, 19, 23
Thank you!
13. What are 5 least favorite tropes?
I don't know if it's my top 5 but I hate:
Miscommunication
Jealousy/possesiveness (in a relationship)
Love triangle (unless it ends in polyamory)
Instalove
Forceful kiss
19. Did you drop any shows this year?
So many (since I'm extremely picky about what I want to watch): About Youth, Enchanté, Love in the Air, DNA Says Love You, Triage, Vice Versa, Mood Indigo, Between Us, Plus & Minus, War of Y and Senpai, Danjite Koidewa!
23. Who was the softest character/pairing in QL this year? Which pairing had the best communication?
Softest character: Takumi from Kimi no Hana ni Naru (the show isn't QL but he's bi so I'm including him)
Softest pairing: Maybe Adachi/Kurosawa from Cherry Magic the movie or Cake/Eiw from My Only 12%.
Best communication: Pat/Pran from Bad Buddy (if they count as this year). I could also nominate them for softest pairing since they're my faves.

Compare and Contrast Cherry Magic (Japan) and Ep 1 Cherry Magic (Thailand)
I hope Achi’s ‘clumsiness’, like Adachi’s, is largely phased out after the first episode.
I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to explain this properly, but one thing I found interesting is: Both Adachi and Achi are in a rut and resigned to it, but I think it bothers Achi more than it did Adachi. I don’t think Adachi really wanted more until he started to realise having more was actually maybe an option, whereas, Achi does want more, but he doesn’t believe having more is an option.
When it comes to Kurosawa and Karan, Karan being subtly burnt out was shown right away, whereas, Kurosawa’s loneliness and bouts of sadness along with the struggles he’s faced were gradually revealed.
On another note, Karan and Achi have much more of a relationship already. I don’t have a problem with this, but one thing I preferred about the Japanese version is: Adachi genuinely didn’t pay much attention at all to Kurosawa before he found out Kurosawa liked him. It was like, yeah, there’s Kurosawa, the popular office guy, and that was it. Even with him helping a drunk Kurosawa, I never got the impression that incident, in contrast to how life-changing it was to Kurosawa, made much of an impact on him. Yeah, I helped a drunk coworker once, it was nice to see even the popular can have down moments, I don’t really remember the specifics beyond this of that night.
Here, Achi is a little jealous of Karan. He wants to be more like him. He holds Karan up as something he himself should be.
Adachi, meanwhile, I think he would have liked to be more like Kurosawa, but he didn’t really dwell on this feeling, and he especially didn’t dwell on Kurosawa as a person until he started to learn, oh, this guy who’s everything I’m not, it turns out I have a really incomplete picture of who he really is and what he’s really like beyond what everyone, including me, has seen.
Sidenote, I don’t know if Karan is going to be a teasing character like Kurosawa or not. In the original, seeing sunshine-y Kurosawa teasing Adachi, and Adachi being all silently I really cannot deal with you right now was fun. Here, Karan’s suggestion they take the stairs had a genuine sweetness to it. It was like, okay, I have a solution that might help make you more comfortable, and bonus, it’d have me and you spending some time alone together.
I felt the quickly suppressed sadness and disappointment from him when Achi quickly rejected his offer. I’d say to Achi’s credit, Achi didn’t go, huh, taking the stairs would be good for me, but you don’t need to join me, bye, but I suspect it’s more that, like adult me (kid me loved stairs), Achi is not taking the stairs unless he actually needs to for some reason.
When it comes to Adachi and Tsuge and Achi and Jinta, again, I’m not sure if I’m going to explain this properly or not, but: Until the movie, I never saw much enjoyment between Adachi and Tsuge, but this doesn’t mean I thought they had a bad friendship. They struck me as two people who had a strong emotional connection, and due to this, they’d meet for dinner or drinks occasionally just to keep up with one another so that, when one of them needed emotional support, it wasn’t weird to call or text at like 3 am or something.
Jinta and Adachi, on the other hand, seem more like conventional friends who genuinely enjoy one another’s company. Their food fight was adorable.
I’m not good at recognising most animal behaviour, but even I know that the way that cat was panting was not good, just like I knew Pobjer from Don’t Say No was not happy or interested in any of the actors handling her (assuming the cat actor was female like the character).
This said, like many of the takes I’ve read, I do love how the connection between Jinta and his love interest is being fleshed out via the cat. But since I was pretty meh on Tsuge/Minato, I might be on Jinta and this guy, too.
Sing Harit Cheewagaroon is an impressive actor. To date, my favourite role of his is Todd from Not Me, but I like him here as Rokkaku’s counterpart.
The fact Karan choose Achi’s cake but didn’t show up for the party is cute. Him spending a month researching in the hopes of finding a great cake, and then, being, me and him aren’t actually friends, and he’s somewhat shy/socially awkward, I want him to being completely comfortable and enjoy his birthday celebration, here, friends of Achi’s, here’s a cake, don’t mention it came from me, thanks- adorable.
I saw the perfect take that encapsuled what I felt about Achi being sent, on his birthday, to give cake to someone who wasn’t even part of the celebration. Namely, I was all, What? Seriously?
Followed by the realisation it could be his friends pinging Karan’s crush and lowkey shipping the two.
If so, aw.
One thing that kind of worked and kind of didn’t is: In the original, I wondered why Adachi didn’t get a cab. Here, he tried, and he probably could have eventually gotten one, but it was also clear he was unlikely to get one anytime soon.
In the original, I don’t want to say bullied, but Kurosawa was more okay, you’re staying with me tonight, and Adachi sort of ended up in front of the apartment mentally going, how exactly did I end up here?
Here, this vibe didn’t exactly happen.
Like many, I’m disappointed we may not get an aroace character, but I’m not surprised. It’s too bad. Fujisaki was an awesome character, and it was nice to see a sweet, somewhat playful, competent aroace character who clearly had genuine emotional connections with other people. She wasn’t cold or misanthropic or traumatised. She didn’t want or need a romantic relationship to be happy, ditto a sexual one, and her friendship with Adachi and Kurosawa was awesome. Recognising they’d be happy together, she helped them get there, and neither ever thought anything was wrong with her.
Adachi was willing to be her beard, if she wanted him to, and they both supported her following her career goals.
Finally, I’m likely in the minority here, but I did not like Karan’s smirk at the end. Since I know the original and probably wouldn’t believe the show would go a certain way even if I didn’t know the original, I can put my kneejerk reaction aside, but whatever exactly Tay Tawan Vihokratana was going for, and whatever so many people got that they liked, I went somewhere different upon seeing that expression.

Are there any specific BL shows you would recommend to someone just getting into the genre?
Hmmm. This is always a hard one for me! Because there are so amazing ones but so many of them should come with warning and also if I start on the really good ones what happens when you finish those and realize the rest aren't that great?
Also, how do I give advice without knowing who I'm advising and their taste? That's the biggest issue for me with an 'intro course' because you never know what people like and don't like. There are people who hate every. single. show. I've recommended here.
Now, to clarify, I started on what I call the Netflix route. I watch The Untamed and then SOTUS and then found Viki and watched Love By Chance and that got me into the fandom. Would that work for everyone? Not a chance. But it just goes to show you that anything can get someone into a fandom if that's what they like.
So this is a list of BL shows i feel show the best of the industry... and a few on the list that are there because they show you what MOST of the industry is like as well. Take a sampling. Try a few shows. Don't limit yourself to any single country or genre. Sample.
There's SO much out there. You never know where your taste may take you. Search BL on My Drama List. Ask multiple people for where to get started. Look at gifsets on here and see what appeals. My taste may not be your taste, my idea of amazing may not be yours, my idea of the best of the best may not fit in with what you like.
So... ANYWAY. Disclaimer out of the way! Here's my list of where to start based on what I think is a good intro to BL itself through amazing shows and also trope-filled shows.
1. A Tale of A Thousand Stars: The story of a rich young man who needs a heart transplant, gets it from a young woman who was a volunteer teacher in a poor village and falls in love with one of the soldiers in the village. Absolutely lovely. Just fantastic. Gorgeous characters, amazing setting, fantastic story. Seriously. This will spoil you for a lot of lesser shows but if you start with it you'll know how good the genre can get.
2. Cherry Magic: Adachi is an office worker who considers himself awkward and boring and not very good at anything... until he turns 30, gains the power to read minds from being a virgin and discovers that the top worker at his office, Kurosawa, has a huge crush on him. The softest, sweetest, most gentle BL and just fantastic. Highest of the high recommendations. Seriously. A great place to start.
3. He's Coming to Me: Mes is a ghost. He's been dead for a long time. And Thun has been visiting, and seeing him, since he was a child. When Thun is going to University, he ends up taking Mes with him and their real adventure begins. Warning for death but holy shit is this one good. So good. Absolutely amazing and wonderful, plot-driven, a need to watch show.
4. Until We Me Again: WARNING: SUICIDE AND DEATH. In and Korn were forbidden lovers 30 years ago. Dean and Pharm dream of them every night and recognize each other on sight. Fate brings them together but can fate really lead to true love? An amazing show, absolutely beautiful, deep characters, deep plot, filled to the brim with emotion and highly recommended but heed the warning, okay?
5. Be Loved In House: I Do: When Shi Lei's new boss, Yu Zhen, takes over the jewelry store and introduces a rule that everyone working there must be single, Shi Lei is ready to throw hands for his friends. So what happens when he slowly finds himself falling in love with that strange man? This is just such a soft little show, filled with joy and softness and idiots. Absolutely a great place to start yourself on Taiwen BL.
6. All the Korean BL movies: I know that this is just a label but, like, literally all of these are soft and short and a great place to start to just get a feel for the shows coming out of Korea. Not as trope-y but just generally... good. ALWAYS watch the movie version.
Wish You: Tiny musician catches the eye of someone working for a record label
Where Your Eyes Linger: Bodyguard and the boy he guards
To My Star: Puppy movie star (who's more neurotic than he lets on) meets stiff chef (who's softer than he lets on)
Color Rush: In a world where a portion of the population can only see in shades of grey until they meet the person that lets them see in color... and are considered dangerous for this... a mono meet a probe. The best of the bunch!
Mr Heart: A marathon runner has stopped winning and another young man is hired to help him get back to winning. Honestly the weakest of these in my humble opinion.
Nobleman Ryu's Wedding: Historical Idiots being historically soft and historically stupid. That's is. Young man dresses as a woman to cover up that his sister ran away from an important marriage but the groom ends up loving him regardless.
7. Light on Me: A student who's never had a friend is convinced to at least give it a try and joins the student council where he meets a sweet young man, a jokester and an awkward and confrontational young man... and there's a lover triangle because what else would there be? Oh, this one is SO good and so soft and very emotional and sweet and has a fantastic love triangle and introduces you to tropes very smartly. Definitely a good place to slip into the genre and see how the tropes get played.
8. Ingredients: A chef lives with a musician and takes care of him every turn. Yes, it's an extended ad series. But it's also soft BL filled with every trope imaginable and it's a good place to just let yourself get used to Thai BL and how it feels.
9. Oxygen: When a rich young man who can't sleep finds himself at a coffee shop in the middle of the night, there's no way he expected to meet the love of his life. But when the barista offers him warm milk to help him sleep? He's lost. I put this one on here with a few reservations because there's a side pairing that is just horrible (skip all scenes with the doctors and the coffee shop coworker for your own good, okay?) but the rest of the show is just so good and so soft and I love it so much.
10. My Engineer: A sassy freshman meets a senior engineering student who is SERIOUSLY into getting sassed. A quiet introvert meets an extrovert who refuses to give up. One friend has been pining for years and has decided friendship is good enough. This one, again, goes on with reservations. It's a good start for getting into most of the more typical Thai BLs. Gives you the regular tropes, gives you the more typical relationship and friendship things... This is a good place to start if you want to be prepared for most of what you're going to watch, frankly.
There. I'll stop there. I think that's a good set. @absolutebl may have some more ideas? I kinda went basic on this list, no denials. And maybe a bit weird as well. No denials.

tagged by @ralbeleren, thank you! probably already did this once or twice but who cares lol :’)
1. your all time favorite bl and why
bold of you to assume I could choose only one lol. I can’t choose between I told sunset about you & theory of love bc they’re two extremely important shows to me, so that’ll be my answer. pretty sure not me is on that road too though ;)
2. that one bl that scarred you for life
what the duck: final call. I was a HUGE popoat fan & the final episode aired one day before my birthday even though I thought we still had more episodes left, and SPOILER but this show ends really badly & it broke my motherfucking heart. I sobbed uncontrollably for like an hour, no joke :(
3. is there any bl that made you feel single?
um, all of them lmao? if I had to choose one though it would be cherry magic bc kurosawa is the perfect boyfriend & stands by adachi through every difficulty, which is something I would like to find in a partner as I am pretty annoying :’)))
4. if you could change one thing from a bl, which one would it be?
that’s such a loaded question bc literally almost every bl ever would benefit from some rewriting here & there. but I would either change the what the duck: final call ending to a happy one, or fix the mess that was the later half of bad buddy.
5. that one bl you detest
everyone knows it by now... tharntype, I wish it didn’t exist & its popularity fills me with a rage I work really hard to control every day lol. let’s move on (:
6. your top 5
1) I told sunset about you
2) crossing the line
3) mood indigo
4) theory of love
5) atots, cherry magic or dbk... probably not me though
7. that trashy bl you lowkey like
ossan’s love, fish upon the sky, my mate match, gen y, love poison, my tee, what the duck, y-destiny... I’m kind of the queen of mediocre bl shows, let’s be honest lmao
8. your favorite korean bl
where your eyes linger
9. but also your top 3 for kbls
1) where your eyes linger
2) to my star
3) light on me
10. season 2? which one?
is this question about which season 2 I’d like to get? or which season 2 I can actually tolerate as a notorious sequel-hater? guess I’ll answer both, even though it’s obvious that I want ZERO season two’s. they can go die & I’ll be happy lmao. as for my favorite sequel, idk if dark blue kiss fully counts bc petekao were only a sideship before, but either that or still 2gether, both series continued the ships’ stories faithfully & didn’t ruin them which, YES, is sadly extremely rare.
11. a bunch of dramas will air soon. which ones are you the most excited for?
I legit already have thirty 2022 shows in my plan to watch list loooooool. for only bl shows we have enchanté, never let me go, the eclipse, kinnporsche, middleman’s love, sky in your heart, midnight chicken & unforgotten night :)
12. tag them
@lakorns, @disaster-j, @fck-inspector-m, @myfirstisthefourth, @happy-little-spleen, @anthrotmnt, @lettucebeshrimp & @nihilisticcondensedmilk

CHERRY MAGIC TIMELINE (DRAMA CANON)
I rewatched Cherry Magic over the last couple days as one does and thought it’d be fun to keep track of the dates/when things happen. For the most part it’s very easy as there are several very specific dates mentioned in the show.
You might notice several Saturdays where they’re at work-- this seems to be pretty standard in Japanese office culture, to work a couple Saturdays a month.
You also might notice a very major time jump that would have happened between Episodes 10 and 11-- I could write this off as a suspension of disbelief type thing, but since there are so many specific dates referenced in the show, and going off Adachi’s pain at keeping his secret from Kurosawa for so long in Ep 11 I think it might be accurate. Please let me know if I missed anything!! :)
Sometime in 2013 - Adachi and Kurosawa are both hired at Toyokawa. The dinner with President Matsuura happens and Kurosawa falls in love with the first person who's ever told him he's more than a pretty face.
Feb 14 2020 - Kurosawa gives Adachi some free chocolate he got off the street.
Oct 1 2020 - Urabe teases Adachi for never having had a girlfriend, tells him of the urban legend of becoming a 30 y/o virgin wizard.
Fri Oct 2 - Adachi's 30th birthday, he discovers his powers.
Fri Oct 9: this is the day the episode aired, and it also works with the timeline in later episodes - Adachi bumps into Kurosawa in the elevator and discovers his feelings. That night Kurosawa offers to help Adachi with his extra work, they're there so late Adachi misses the last train and Kurosawa insists Adachi stay over at his place. We get scarf wrapping, geeking out over manga, Kurosawa fantasising about Adachi in his jammies, neither of them can sleep.
Sat Oct 10 - Kurosawa makes them breakfast. At the office Kurosawa scolds Urabe for putting down Adachi's work. At the end of the day Kurosawa offers some files to help Adachi with the extra work Urabe gave him. Adachi chases after him and asks him out for dinner, but Rokkaku interrupts before they can go and tells them to come out drinking. We get Kurosawa lamenting over the lost date, Adachi helping out Rokkaku, The King's Game drama. Adachi goes to comfort Kurosawa and we have Kurosawa being sad and gay and Adachi assuring him he's just an anxious virgin and Rokkaku interrupts an almost kiss.
Oct 11-Oct 25 - Adachi avoids Kurosawa.
Mon Oct 26 - Urabe asks Adachi and Fujisaki to go buy desserts, they talk about love and life, and are harrassed on the way back to the office. Kurosawa comes to the rescue. Adachi discovers Fujisaki is the aroace queen of our dreams. Kurosawa patches up Adachi’s hand. Kurosawa has trouble with a big client and Adachi uses his power to help. Kurosawa thanks him and gives him a couple mochi cakes as thanks. Rokkaku invites Adachi for lunch, giving him a bunch of food and snacks in thanks for his help at drinks a couple weeks ago. As the two are leaving work that night they see a beautiful woman run up to Kurosawa and beg to stay the night with him. Adachi walks home in the rain and falls asleep in his wet clothes in a fit of despair.
Tue Oct 27 - Adachi is sick all day, and goes to leave work early. Kurosawa notices and insists on taking him home, and as they’re getting into a taxi the woman from the night before jumps in. She turns out to be Kurosawa’s sister and demands to stay over at Kurosawa’s again, making him go home with Adachi to care for him. Kurosawa spends the whole night nursing Adachi back to health.
Wed Oct 28: Kurosawa directly references the date, and it retroactively works for all the previous dates - Kurosawa makes Adachi porridge, and the “day one of our private sweet life!” fantasy. Rokkaku interrupts again, and asks to join Kurosawa and Adachi for the night. We get Kurosawa being adorably jealous, Adachi being a very sweet and supportive friend. Kurosawa thinks about how special Adachi is to him and wonders what he’s doing to himself and leaves in the middle of the night.
Thurs Oct 29 - Adachi is worried over Kurosawa leaving early and his distance throughout the day. As they leave the office Adachi awkwardly talks about how he’s never had anyone to take care of him other than family, and Kurosawa tells him he can’t stay with Adachi anymore. He confesses his feelings and claims the next time they see each other everything will be back to normal.
Fri Oct 30: When Adachi is confessing, he mentions “yesterday” so this does happen the next day - Kurosawa is away in Osaka for the day and reflects over his history with Adachi, and how he has to let go of his feelings. Adachi realizes how much he enjoys Kurosawa’s company and how he’s always thinking about him, and runs to meet Kurosawa on his way home. He confesses his feelings and they hug and we all cry, and as they walk home Adachi asks if he wants to go out to eat and Kurosawa teases him about going to his place.
Sat Oct 31 - Kurosawa bought a one-way ticket to flirt city this morning. He finds Adachi in the break room and asks him to spend the day together tomorrow.
Sun Nov 1 - Tsuge shows up at Adachi’s right before Kurosawa, and we have some prime clown to clown communication while Tsuge talks about how he agreed to go watch Minato dance. Kurosawa suggests they all go and we get: Tsuge being awkward around his crush, Kurosawa and Adachi giggling over Tsuge being awkward around his crush, a fight and Kurosawa blanking out for a solid four seconds over being called ossan. We get some more clown to clown communication, Adachi and Kurosawa walking home and having a very sweet conversation about taking things step by step, Tsuge catches Minato’s friend kissing him and runs away.
Tue Nov 10: Adachi refers to how they’ve been dating for 9 days - Kurosawa apparently stayed the night and they played video games together aww, they have a goofy morning together being in love. Urabe points out how happy Adachi is lately. Kurosawa and Adachi share onigiri for lunch and Rokkaku interrupts again. As they’re leaving the break room Kurosawa asks Adachi to have another go at their date this coming weekend and they see the poster for the design competition. Rokkaku later finds Adachi and angrily asks him to contact Tsuge. That night after work Adachi, Kurosawa, and Rokkaku meet Tsuge at a coffee shop and Rokkaku immediately starts a fight with Tsuge over his apparent homophobia, since he’s been avoiding Minato ever since he caught him kissing his ex. Tsuge assures them he has been avoiding Minato but not because he’s gay, and runs off to find Minato and they confess to each other, and later that evening have sex. As Kurosawa and Adachi walk home Kurosawa gives him the forms to sign up for the design competition, saying he’ll be rooting for him if he gives it a try. Adachi says Kurosawa has given him the confidence to try and they hug.
Wed Nov 11 - Rokkaku thanks Adachi for his help with Tsuge and Minato. Adachi hands in his application for the design competition.
Sometime in the next couple days - Adachi and Kurosawa go for coffee after work where Adachi apologizes for how much of his time the competition will take, and Kurosawa says their date can wait, but he’ll be expecting a reward later. Tsuge calls Adachi to gush over his relationship with Minato and tell Adachi not to be afraid of losing his magic, and Adachi starts to really think about being intimate with Kurosawa.
Sat Nov 14: Adachi mentions how there’s only three days until the deadline for his proposal. On the application form, it says the proposals are due by 5pm Nov 17th - Adachi shows his ideas to Fujisaki and Kurosawa, but Rokkaku calls it boring. Kurosawa tells him not to worry about it, that inspiration sometimes comes from nowhere.
Sun Nov 15 - Adachi and Kurosawa are hanging out at Adachi’s place, and they talk about the expectations of other people. Kurosawa suggests they get out to clear their heads and have a “practise date”. We get the sweetest montage of them having fun at Tokyo Dome, and then when Adachi gets sick Kurosawa privately worries about not being able to always keep Adachi happy. That night Adachi finishes his project proposal.
Mon Nov 16: Adachi refers to their date as “yesterday” - Adachi hands in his proposal, and asks Kurosawa to have another practice date with him that evening. He takes them to the bookstore and izakaya, and Adachi shows Kurosawa his proposal. They have a conversation about communication and how they should be able to relax around each other. As they are walking home Adachi accidentally responds to Kurosawa’s thoughts and thinks about how if Kurosawa knew they couldn’t be together in the same way anymore.
Sun Dec 13: This one is mostly speculation, but I feel it works as the conversation between Adachi and Tsuge is so fresh in his mind the next day, and Adachi also refers to Tsuge’s problems when they see each other on Christmas Eve - Tsuge and Adachi get lunch and Tsuge talks about his relationship troubles, and warns Adachi about not relying too much on his power.
Mon Dec 14: Kurosawa mentions how they have a week to prepare for Adachi’s presentation - Adachi has passed into the second phase of the design competition, and Kurosawa promises to spend all their time special training for his presentation. Adachi apologizes for how much of Kurosawa’s time he’s taking up, but Kurosawa assures him it will all be worth it to enjoy their “first Christmas together and the best date ever”.
Dec 16/17/18 - Montage of the two of them preparing for Adachi’s presentation. It’s also at some point during this week Kurosawa talks to Fujisaki about a restaurant for his date with Adachi.
Mon Dec 21 - Also known as Kurosawa and Adachi’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Kurosawa gives Adachi a bento reminding him to believe in himself, Adachi uses his power to connect with the planning and development committee and then feels guilty for cheating and then doesn’t pass anyway. Adachi tells Kurosawa about his powers and then admits he doesn’t know if he’ll be able to be in a relationship with him if he doesn’t have them, and they break up :(
Dec 22/23 - Kurosawa and Adachi are very sad and literally everybody knows. Urabe and Fujisaki both have conversations with Adachi about being happy/true to himself.
Thurs Dec 24 - Tsuge goes to see Adachi and tells him that he has to learn to communicate with the people he loves, even if it’s hard. Adachi races off to meet Kurosawa, they reconcile and hug and Kurosawa asks Adachi to be his office pal for life and fireworks go off and everyone’s cryin’.
Fri Dec 25 - First day of the rest of their private sweet life!!
Sometime over the next couple months - Rokkaku tries to suss out what Adachi and Kurosawa’s relationship and determines they’re just really good senpais to him... truly pure of heart, dumb of ass. Tsuge and Minato have a misunderstanding and then talk it out.
Feb 14 2021 - Kurosawa is in a jealous fit all day over himself, and then he and Adachi exchange true love chocolate <3

ok so i’m caught up with cherry magic
here are my thoughts:
Adachi: panic gay whom i love with all my little heart
Kurosawa: seemingly distinguished gay but actually panic gay inside. v confident in his relationship, love that for him
Tsuge: this bitch really said “i like you,” passed out when his crush said “yeah, me too, duh,” and then got that twink dick within like an hour. iconic.
Minato: he is the only one of these dummies who knows what the fuck he’s doing lmao, i respect him
Rokkaku: he’s baby. so protective of his friends. love him.
Udon: b a b y. I love her more than life.
shoutout to Fujisaki too. Her crush told her he wasn’t interested (indirectly) and she saw that Kurosawa loved Adachi and went like “you know what, that’s fair, I just want him happy” and I respect that. Distinguished, amazing person. New friend for Adachi?? Idk, I just love her.
I’m a dumb lesbian man, idk, maybe I just have a crush on her, leave me alone

this week has been a week of sad bl moments, with gen y, cherry magic, and tonhon chonlatee, and yet gen y was the only one that made me cry for some reason. i think it was because mark was so clearly left absolutely broken and alone. there’s no doubt that adachi and kurosawa care for each other deeply and they both know that. while ton and chon definitely have lots to work through, this most recent episode actually gave a lot of viewers a lot of hope for the future, while showing ton and chon being surrounded by a group of loving, supportive people.
mark, on the other hand, was left sitting alone, crying among something that he created with so much optimism and love. he’s repeatedly been pushed aside and pulled in different directions with kit’s hot-and-cold attitude, and at the moment where he though everything was looking up and he was finally going to get the guy, kit left him, essentially for another man. yes, of course, kit does not have feelings for either wayu or pha, but i can see how much pain it give mark to never be prioritized. kit’s own insecurities about mark not being genuine, and then not communicating that with mark, drove a huge wedge in their relationship that prevents them from moving forward. i hope they can address that issue sooner rather than later, because i’d like to see happy markkit soon, but i’d rather they work through it fully rather then the show rush it.

i realized by the third ep bc i wasnt totally paying attn the first time and im having the most traumatic month ever that adachi like....actually is a go-getter. he just thinks he isnt.
in the show he is older than i am but we are basically the same age. i've been loud, outspoken, tall, commandeering, and been a leader when i have to be. but if i had nothing pushing me? i know who i become. adachi got a job and does good work even if he believes he doesn't. that's not something i achieve or cuold do necessarily. he keeps his job, people like him, even if they walk over him, he's just you know. him.
but when he chases after kurosawa i never realiezd...like i would never do that. that's just not who i am and i wouldn't be able to do what he did. he thought about how much courage it took but, and this isn't in a bad way, he was like "WOW I DID IT!" but he fucking did it! he does it!
it takes me ages, i must deliberate, i have to think think think. he and i are different and lead different lives; he's more stable than i am financially and securely and he did that all on his own. it's weird to have someone so conflicted but be way more of a go-getter. i put on bravado but am extremely reserved and i would just take my time. if i had his ability i wouldnt do fucking shit about it. i'd be like ok time for EVERYONE to get the FUCK away from me and for me to like. go to a brothel. he handles it cooly and well. idk like....adachi is a lot cooler than he thinks. and i know he finds out what people truly think of him but seriously he's a chill fucking dude. he's also fucking hilarious. i'm glad people got to know him.
i am contemplating torrenting this in 1080p because it's too gorgeous to have it compressed to 720p and it really takes away from my experience because i think this is filmed very well but i can't exactly tell. it's a lot more complex than i remember it being but i was like....watching 5million things at the time. i wanted to take my time.
the thing about asian dramas and bl and stuff is that it's mine to do. i don't feel pressure because most people i know don't watch it. i can find my own thoughts and talk about them. i don't have FOMO really but if i do i will just....stop watching for months. it teaches me to slow the fuck down . it's better when not everyone around me knows because i don't feel this pressure it's just me.
i love films and well-made productions (not a huge tv fan) but asian dramas have allowed me to slow down. that doesn't mean they aren't without their extreme fucking challenges as someone who respects herself and the people that are marginalized the most. but it's good to fucking SLOW THE FUCK DOWN.
i'm sad tho bc i hate watching films alone and not in theaters so i become consuming way more asian media than i would like because that shuts me off to my people and the world too. but then again it's a bit of an escape even if it covers heavy topics i guess. sometimes. i think i turn to it the most when i cannot handle the heaviness of the world and feeling like being a black woman is going to drown me even if i am so proud.
there's a lot of cross-solidarity btw which is why so many black people do flock to the media. it isn't that we don't know we're being exploited and laughed at many times, or if we're fat etc, it's that there's an underlying struggle as well. still, it sucks to be reminded of our differences as well.
cherry magic is a really good example of a concrete world and a dreamy one and i think a person on MDL said this about it; to them it feels so like manga-y, very japanese, what they remember growing up on (ik it was a manga lol) and i think they get that right. also like....real actors. i don't necessarily feel the same way about ITSAY, but i think there's a lot less solace there. i've been asking people about what they think about ITSAY like what their issues with it were bc im genuinely fascinated to know bc visually taht story is really just...impeccable. tight writing. but there's something that is off that i don't feel with CM. there's a couple of reasons why but. anyways i am hungry and going on to ep 4. i cannot believe that guy who is adachi's friend is my age. ok he is not 30. HE LOOKS 35.
also if anyone watchedwe best love, doesn't the dude that's adachi's senpai who asks him to do too much work (this is where he and i differ, i would straight up be like hmmm probably not even in a work setting lmao) look like the guy from wbl?!?!?!?!?!??!?! u know the one
