Them : You have a "crush" on an anime/manga character? You mean you like a pencil drawing?
Me : Every fictional character ever is born in words and drawings, your refusal to acknowledge and use one of the greatest gifts of humans -- ✨imagination✨ -- is plain sad, much like life inside your head.

Just starting out on sketching. It is something I have always wanted to do, and admire as a skill in others. Hard to find time to sketch during work hours, but I've found trying to sketch between endless meetings is a good start.

Sacrifices and bonds :
WW II - Operation Dynamo (Dunkirk Evacuation)
Context : In 1940 during World War II, British and French armies, fighting side by side as Allies against Germany, were surrounded on all sides by German forces at a port in France called Dunkirk with nowhere to run.
The British commander, knowing the impeding doom that was closing in on them in the form of German troops, held on to the hope of a 'miracle' for which he had made preparations. This miracle was Operation Dynamo, a plan to evacuate the Allied Forces by sea before the German forces completely closed in on them at Dunkirk.
Operation Dynamo took place between 26th May 1940 to 4th June 1940. British rescue fleet of passenger ferries were sent to Dunkirk, but these were huge and could not get very close to the beach as the port was constantly being air-bombed by German air troops. In these desperate times, hundreds of small boats from all over the southern ports of England were gathered and sent to Dunkirk. The boats being smaller were less of a target in air-bombings. These boats took soldiers from the beaches to the bigger rescue ships, eventually evacuating almost all of them.
What's notable is that this fleet of boats that did the final rescue were fishing boats, cabin cruises and barges with majority of them accompanied by their own civilian crews. About a quarter of these boats did not return back home. Along with these civilians who braved the air-bombed Dunkirk port to get their soldiers back, were the rear guards of French troops. It is said that the French rear guard stayed at the port and fought on with the arriving German troops until the last rescue boat had left the port.
300,000 soldiers from the allied armies were rescued in this operation, 41% of them were French.
Tumblr media
Imagining....
The French and British soldiers who'd come to know each other, fighting together as Allies, developing bonds beyond the pacts signed by their nations, sacrificing their lives for each other when needed.
The French soldiers in the rear guard, knowing the battle was lost but not losing hope for the war and letting as many soldiers escape as possible, laying down their lives for French and British alike.
The British civilians coming with their boats to a battlefield amidst constant bombing, determined to get back as many soldiers as possible, a quarter of whom didn't make back home themselves.
All for the greater good of winning the war, and what it meant for their people.

One Piece Ep 946
SPOILERS AHEAD! Proceed only if you're up-to-date with the anime.
Big Mom gaining back her memory - analysis :
With all her memory wiped out, Big Mom only retained one thing, that had stayed with her since childhood -- her hunger pangs. She is naturally a kind person which is clear from the fact that she wanted to repay the people from Okobore town for giving her a bowl of red bean soup out of the little food they had.
But then with a major blow on her head by Queen, she gains her memory back. What is interesting is that the blow, according to me, gives her an experience of almost losing consciousness, and in that moment what she sees is her "precious" children. It is these memories of her children that get her memory back about her identity and her present.
I find Big Mom's back story pretty interesting, because it explains why she has a thing for "family" (much like Whitebeard did). One can say that her hunger pangs that have accompanied her since childhood are what define her. Her physical strength and her senses know no bounds when triggered by her hunger. But her family is what gives her the purpose in her life. We've seen her kill her own son when overcome with one of her hunger pangs, so it's safe to say that her hunger pangs are a major defining feature of her character but to understand why Big Mom does anything and everything, the family angle is very important. Neglected and abandoned by everyone she tried to hold dear in childhood, as an adult, she makes sure nobody in her family can abandon her, with her sheer power.
Tumblr media
She values her own children based on how much they can be useful in attaining two of her major goals - 1. keeping the family she has together and with her, 2. expanding her family/power (which in turn helps her fulfill her first goal). In these respects she is very similar to Vinsmoke Judge.
If we draw a parallel between Whitebeard and Big Mom, both of whom have the same end goal of having a family stand by them, the major difference arises in their means to achieve it and their definition of family itself. While Big Mom places great importance in her own bloodline, Whitebeard never cared for it. Whitebeard adopted all his sons and Big Mom is known to abandon her husbands once they have given her children. In terms of means, Whitebeard is pretty open-hearted about who he accepts and doesn't actively go seeking out expansion of his family. Big Mom on the other hand accepts people in her family based on strategic importance and also actively seeks to expand her family all the time.

can we talk about how beautiful this panel is?
A lot of people shit on One Piece for “having and ugly art style” but almost all panels have such an easy grace and cool composition/perspective that most people don’t even notice it anymore.
Look how this cool this pose is:
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of swordfighting in manga, but when was the last time you saw a perspective like this? It’s very unusual, with spottyhat’s hand pretty much in our face, pulled back, but pointing forward.
Just look at these perspecitves!
Tumblr media
A beautiful low angle, showing the moment when the guy forward cut the other in the back. It’s 2 moves in 1,  one when the forward guy stops and puts his katana away, and two when the other falls to his knees.
But even if he wasn’t, the angle and the composition, hell, their size itself would tell us who’s victorious.
Tumblr media
Or this! Guy finds a cursed sword, and decides he likes it, despite the long list of its previous dead owners.
The way the sword looks large from this angle, they are almost the same size! It’s basically in our face, we can see the pattern on the blade. It feels dangerous.
And the way we see the guy looking upwards! It could mean a power imbalance, if not for the grin, since this angle usually makes the subject more “innocent and puppy eyed” (remember the emo trend?) but it’s this way it’s a challage.
Who is the stronger, the man or the sword?
Or look at this:
Tumblr media
It’s no less than 3 moves in 1 panel, which is insane, but it’s so natural that you dont even notice it.
1) the two marines swinging their swords to cut Luffy,  2) Ace jumping in to push him down, + Luffy crouching down as a result 3) and the sword going through Ace (because he made of fire, but that’s not relevant here.)
Sometimes the panels can feel a bit overcrowded, but they make the conversation’s flow feel more easy and more like as if you were really there in the room with them:
(read everything right to left)
Tumblr media
Now look at the version where I put in some extra panel dividers:
Tumblr media
It just doesn’t feel the same, does it?
Or, one of my current favourites. Let’s break down this (pre-)fight scene:
It’s sunglasses guy trying to stomp on the spotty pants, mainly because he is an asshole, but it’s mostly the past grudges. Here he is, moving his leg, spotty pants desperate and doesn’t want to die.
Tumblr media
But.
But!
Tumblr media
THE FUCK!
The cavalry is here! HOLY HELL!
Tumblr media
Stunned silence. Snot guy is shocked. Bird guy and strawhat guy are motionless, lookin at each other standing over the saved man; the tension in the air is tangible between them.
Spotty pants is pretty fucking unhappy that he has failed and had to be saved, but being alive is still better than dead, so.
Tumblr media
And yes!
You felt the tension of the other panel right!
It’s a close-up of that one; they are still motionless and in the same position, but now we see their eyes and faces, confirming what we thought was going on.  There was so much raw force in that movement, yet since strawhat’s drawn completely motionless in every picture, instead of him jumping in, the way it’s stopped seem so effortless on his part. (Also this is where the anime adaptation failed - they showed stawhat guy looking up only now, instead of keeping the scene motionless. It’s a shame.)
Even if I didn’t know a thing about them, I’d sill be hyped for what happens next after this, but one thing is for sure.
An ass is about to be kicked, the question is whose it will be.
It’s pretty fucking awesome, have a look at it in whole:
Tumblr media
(Also, this is where one page ends, and you gotta spend those extra seconds to find out wheather he’d live. The rest in one huge page.)
Tumblr media
Oda is really brilliant when it comes to doing the panels and layouts. Look at this character introduction, which is arguably one of the best in the whole series.
Tumblr media
First, out of nowhere, there is a huge-ass explosion on an island. It’s a pirate’s base that we know but we haven’t heard of him for hundreds of chapters. We don’t know wheather he’s dead or alive.
The next is a narration bubble.
The is never any narration in One Piece.
Tumblr media
Pretty cold, isn’t it?
Then again, it’s a manga about pirates. The weak fail all the time.
We are also shown that the impact came from a man-shaped hole in the ground.
Tumblr media
W-what? Who is that? Isn’t it the weak that die? Will he jump?
Tumblr media
It’s still the same moment frozen in time, but from a different angle while we are told more about this man.
Who the hell is still alive after all of these, and more importantly, why would he want to throw away the life he miracoulasly managed to keep so far?
Why is no one stopping him?
Tumblr media
So he’s jumping down from the island in the sky. That seems definitely too extra for a suicide.
Tumblr media
You really feel like you’re too falling while reading a long panel like this.
Also, it’s divided 3 times at the top,  breaking the continuity. It’s not a sudden, quick drop; it takes a long time to fall through 10 km of clouds.
We “jump in time” with these, the exact same mechanism as in the group panel, where the divders broke the flow.
And the end is the long panel of the impact, the one we started out with.
Yet all of these panels the same, lagre picture, not seperate ones, so it’s still nice to look at.
Tumblr media
It’s also the same moment from two angles, the first from the point of view of others(as all the other ones before), but then, we are suddenly see the world as this mystery (dead) madman who’s just jumped from the sky.
Also, what the fuck is the narrator saying? Has the writer gone mad? How is this possible? The is never any narration, what can possibly be so important that suddenly a “voice from above” is telling us all this?
Tumblr media
We see a huge shockwave again, probably coming from the hole, with the other man scattering and voicing the readers’ thoughts aloud.
But we also see what the narrator is saying.
And it can’t be, right?
No one can survive that. And yet, we start to wonder…
Tumblr media
And fuck!!  We’re right. The man who’s just fallen 10kms from the sky is not only pulling himself up from the hole, but has already took out some others.
The original quistion still stands, as in who the fuck this might possibly be??
Tumblr media
SO.
BASICALLY.
He knew he woud not die, just hurled himself down from the sky for fun?? And all he got is a headache??
Tumblr media
HOLY SHIT!
IT’S THE GUY WE’VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT FOR HUNDREADS OF CHAPTERS!!!
AND HE DEFINITELY LIVES UP TO THE HYPE.
Remember, we started at “the weak die” and we progressed to “this guy is trying to die so he must be weak” to “he’s definitely dead” to “this guy can’t even kill himself he’s so strong and he finds it funny”.
Wow.
What a ride. And all of this, only in a few pages.
Or my other favourite, the end of the Katakuri fight (chapter 896 is basically just one huge fantastic ticking bomb, but that’s a different, brilliant matter), or more precisely these few panels:
Tumblr media
Not a word exchanged, yet it show us so much about the quiet, but all-encompassing, deep kindness Luffy has. He’s standing above an unconsicous enemy who spent the better half of the day trying to put an end to Luffy’s attemt to join with his crew again, and what does he do?
He puts a hat to his face, to hide his fanged mouth he’s been trying to hide from the world for decades.
And leaves without a word.
We don’t see his expression, but actions speak louder that that.
Anyway, I just wanted to say how I liked the first Law-Hawkins panel, but you know what? Let’s show some appreciation to the insane skills that made One Piece the brilliant manga that it is today.
Here, have a beautiful Ryuuma:
Tumblr media
UPDATE: here’s part 3. and part 2., part 4.)

NOT AT ZORO WAITING FOR LUFFY TO GET BACK AT THE SHIP
So I just watched the One Piece movie: Adventure of Nebulandia and I’m crying ‘cause Zoro —
WAITED
Tumblr media
LIKE LOOK AT THAT ^
Tumblr media
HE WAS ON A LOOK OUT BTCH
Tumblr media
“He’s here”
BRUH 😭 IT’S PROBABLY THE WHOLE OBSERVATION HAKI THING BUT HE SAID THAT ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER CHOPPER SAID “Let’s wait for Luffy” I’M NOT OKAY
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THAT SMILE. IK. YOU’RE HAPPY.
fuck offfffff  😭
Tumblr media
I understand Zoro, it be like that :’)
These tiny details has me dying.
And NO I’m not gonna talk about Luffy getting shot in front of Zoro, the framing of that whole scene, how devastated Zoro looked, the clear desperation in his voice when he shouted, “LUFFY!!!”, when the mushroom deadass took out his fighting spirit, yet he still managed to put such strong emotions in that one dialogue. I’M NOT SAD. Absolutely not. And the swords? the swords.
I love the movie, it made me like split-head (▰˘◡˘▰)

I gotta say it? But I think Kuma was the funniest fucker in hindsight. Yes during his big moments in Thriller Bark and Sabaody he was the embodiment of insurmountable power, with an intimidating presence that most villains in any other Anime could even hope to match, but looking back on it (one moment in particular) he had an amazing sense of humour.
That moment is when he sent Perona flying in Thriller Bark. At the time it was mild terrifying and horribly ominous how he had made one of the big players of the arc just vanish with literally a swing of his hand (foreshadowing things to come). He asked her his "If you could go on holiday, where would you go?" Line. Odd but okay, every Warlord has had a 'Thing' and this is his, before he promptly vanishes her fast than some one asking the Chinese Government what happened at Tianamen Square. Perona, the Goth Chick(tm) that she is says she wants to go to a gloomy castle and whats the first thought in Paw shaped Terminator's head?
MIHAWKS FUCKING CASTLE!
LIKE THE MOTHERFUCKER THOUGHT "WHERES THE GLOOMIEST PLACE I KNOW!" FUCKING MIHAWKS PLACE!
Plus Kuma knows Mihawk! Chances are that cause of the Human Drills Kuma is the only one who can reach the motherfucker with messages cause god knows the man doesn't have a phone. So Kuma would definitely know Mihawk is the quiet, secluded and brooding type and HERE IS THIS PASTLE COLOURED TWEEN YAPPING HER HEAD OFF AT HIM.
I bet Kuma was liek "Oh yeah. Mihawk is gonna love this" and sent her on her way.
And whenever Mihawk comes back from The War he find two brightly coloured nerds chilling at his place. One of whom he at least has a vested interest in so fair enough BUT THE OTHER IS JUST THIS RANDOMER WHO JUST WONT SHUT UP AND KEEPS ASKING HIM FOR STUFF WHEN HE JUST WANTS TO GET WINE DRUNK AND BULLY ZORO.
I CANNOT AND WILL NOT GET OVER THIS.
Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk.
