On the day before Adanma's birth
Mama came visiting
She said she had a rough night
And she couldn't stop thinking about me
On the day before Adanma's birth
Mama made me peppersoup
The whole house had the heavy aroma
Of Uziza and Uda spices
On the day before Adanma's birth
My husband kissed me tenderly
And laughed when I said I wanted frozen peppersoup
On the day before Adanma's birth
The sky was beautiful
It showered light waters on the earth
I watched the beautiful scene
And absorbed its familiar misty scent
From my special window
Mama chuckles each time she hears me call the window special
But my dark, handsome husband doesn't;
He understands every bit
We stood face to face by that window,
With extremely beautiful emotions overwhelming us
We spoke silently, our eyes passing numerous messages across
We were pregnant
And so,
On the day before Adanma's birth
We stood by that same window,
Kissing tenderly,
Reminding ourselves that our baby was on the way
On the day Adanma's was born
Light beamed on our family
Adanma's smile was light itself
And it beamed through every corner of our lives
And then I realized,
I had two babies;
My baby, and My baby

Everyday, after Shadé simultaneously blows and douses with water the kerosene stove's fire, she goes to sit at her favourite spot; the cool rock at the bank of the small stream separating her house from Yinka's.
Today, she watches as Yinka and his friends sit together, arguing about something she couldn't make sense of. Why strain her ears to listen? She thought. They were an unusual group. Most boys would spend cool evenings playing football, but not Yinka or Segun or Tade. They would sit around, discussing books they had read or were currently reading in school.
Shadé sighed. A sigh she would always produce at the thought of school.
If only, she thought. If only Maami and Baba Ola saw the need to send her to school, maybe she wouldn't need to sit at the bank of the stream, throwing and counting the pebbles she'd throw into it. Maybe she could be among the unusual group across, discussing academic issues. She would give anything to go to school and do better than Ola, she thought. But he was the first son and the prized offspring of the Olaniyan's house; no matter how dull he was, and no matter how smart she proved herself to be, people often forgot about her existence.
Shadé sighed again as tears rolled down her cheeks. She quickly wiped them off with the back of her hand and shuffled to her feet as she heard her mother yell her name from the kitchen.
What was it that she had done this time? "I'm coming Ma!" She yelled back.

Salty Water
It’s 1:45am
You’re not here
I face the ceiling, painting pictures of your smile on it
Your shy smile
The one you gave the first time I called you pretty
The one you gave when we held hands, walking through the bustling streets of Lagos
I sigh
It’s 1:55 am
Ten minutes of you in my memory
Feels like 10 seconds
And you’re still not here
It’s 2am
And I can taste my tears
I miss you
And it’s stupid
Why would I miss the one that hurt me the most?
It’s 2:05
I laugh like a maniac
Sniffling and dabbing my eyes
I sigh
Deep breaths
Men don’t cry
These aren’t tears
This is salty water

When it feels like you can't breathe
And the walls in your heart are caving
Remember, you have the strength
And the courage
To face whatever's coming at you
You will overcome
Yes you will!🌼

Close your eyes,
Breathe in,
Count one to three,
Breathe out,
Open your eyes,
You are fine baby,
It's just a phase;
It'll pass.
Again, You are fine.❤

May you see what you search for
Even in the deepest fog
May you hear what your ear itches for
In the noisiest storm
And may you breathe freedom;
The freedom of expression
