Racial Rights are also very important to us at Vanier Gardens.
Facts:
The groups that are the most likely to be victims of racism are : Arabs (59%), First Nations (28%), Blacks (23%), East Indians (23%), Asians (11%), Jewish (7%), Hispanic (5%).
The Aboriginal murder rate in Canada is 7 to 8 times higher compared to the rest of the world.  In Toronto, where Black people are 4% of the population, they account for as many as 40% of murder victims.
How can we eliminate racism?
Explore the unknown- learn about other cultures!
Think before you speak, since words can have harsh consequences on others.
Don’t laugh at racist and stereotypical assumptions.
Make friends of different backgrounds.

Vanier Gardens values Indigenous Rights, since we believe in equality and respect.
Here are some ISSUES that Aboriginal individuals face:
Poorer health.
Lower levels of education.
Inadequate housing and crowded living conditions.
Lower income levels.
Higher rates of unemployment.
Higher levels of incarceration.
Higher death rate amongst children and youth due unintentional injuries.
Higher rates of suicide
FACTS :
“Suicide rates are five to seven times higher for First Nations youth than for non-Aboriginal youth.”
“Disproportionate rates of tuberculosis at 26.4 times the rate of Canadian-born non-Aboriginal people.”
“Type 2 diabetes is now considered to have reached “epidemic” level.”
Some Indigenous Rights :
Rights to the land
Rights to subsistence resources and activities
The right to self-determination and self-government
The right to practice one’s own culture and customs including language and religion. - cultural integrity -
The right to enter into treaties.
How can we help ?
Respect the indigenous cultural norms.
Meet elders in their communities rather than have them come to offices, since it will show involvement and interest in learning.
Read Indigenous literature and listen to indigenous music to gain a new perspective.
Get involved in the Vanier Indigenous Circle.

Last week’s workshop with Naughty Nettle Medicinals and Programmes Coyote was definitely inspirational and a lot of fun. We had the opportunity to get in touch with nature through meditation and through learning how to use our other senses apart from our sight.
We became one with nature, which was a powerful and amazing experience.
We also got new skills by learning how to design our own "flutes" from Japanese Knotweed!
Japanese Knotweed
Uses:  bronchitis, cough, gum disease (gingivitis), sore mouthand throat,  lung diseases, skin disorders, and fluid retention.
Benefits:
Cognitive Aid - preventing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
Blood Pressure reduction
Gastro issues
Cancer Prevention
Insulin Control
