do you know where "no beta we die like x" comes from and how it is used?

The term "beta" in this context is short for "beta reader" - a person who reads a fic while it's still in the editing stage and helps the writer get it ready to post. Some betas check grammar. Some check canon compliance. Some are sensitivity readers. There are lots of things that betas can do.

So functionally, saying "no beta" means that the writer didn't get this checked by a second person before they posted it. It's a warning that there might be errors or typos etc. It's mostly used when an author has written something quickly and is posting without doing a lot of (or any) edits first.

As for where it comes from? It all started with a bumper sticker.

This image was an internet meme at one point, and it got meme'd on in the form of "no ___ we ___ like men"

Here on tumblr, one of the versions that got really popular was from now-deleted user @grec1a who created this version:

From there, it migrated to AO3 as the "no beta we die like men" tag, and very often the word men is replaced by the name of a character who dies in canon.

i could go on and on about aang and toph’s relationship for DAYSSS. the fact that he saw her in a vision before they even met is SOULMATE BEHAVIOR. and their dynamic is BEAUTIFUL !! theyre so opposite, especially in ideology, yet theyre so in sync! especially in battle, the way their bending compliments each other’s despite being opposing elements is insane! and their conflicting ideologies challenge the other in ways that encourage personal growth. this is especially beneficial to aang because by pushing him outside of his comfort zone, toph allows him to adopt new approaches and perspectives towards his bending and worldview which is crucial for the avatar to learn

I think antis tend to fixate on Katara linking her mother's death to Zuko in "The Southern Raiders" because that's the stated reason that she can't forgive him, but it's important to remember that this is not the main reason, and never was. She feels personally betrayed by him because she was so ready to trust him in the caves, after he said he had lost his mother, too. She did not see him as someone who she would always hate because he is fire nation. She saw him as someone who was like her, and connected with him instantly over it. And this was before he'd even switched sides. Once he's no longer supporting the fire nation and after he proves himself to her in TSR, it would be ridiculous to insist that she still associates him with her mother's death.

So one sketch of Luka riding bike has developed into this, complementing the scene between where Luka runs out of his cabin to the scene of him barging into the bakery.

An afterthought… that barging into the bakery was really cool, but when I actually thought about it, Tom or Sabine or any other customer could have stood right in the middle of the shop and they could have run over by bike. It was lucky no one was there in the open space, and Luka at that moment with no imagination to the harm he could have caused… that’s so unlike of you and so not cool Luka Couffaine.
