Autopsy Reference Page
A little intro:
I worked in a morgue for about a year as an autopsy assistant / intern. I have a portfolio and a certificate and everything. I've seen a lot of character designs with autopsy scars in them and stories with autopsies featured as a major event and wanted to provide some information on how autopsies through the justice system work, specifically FROM MY EXPERIENCE. This will not apply to private autopsies, though I will include a little bit of what I know about those at the end of this post.
If you are sensitive to gore, go ahead and skip this page. If you like writing gore or learning more about this stuff, welcome!
First thing's first: Who approves an autopsy?
Generally, it is the District Attorney. A DA will approve an autopsy for the following reasons:
It's a suspicious death
It was caused by the victim (self-inflicted)
It was an obvious homicide
It falls under the conditions stated in the state's constitution or laws
What conditions could those be?
This is going to sound really morbid, but most states have a clause that dictates any deaths in which the decedent is under 12 months of age must be autopsied. That's the biggest reason cited in laws outside of criminal justice cases.
Who performs an autopsy?
The people performing the actual evisceration are called Medical Examiners. In order to be a medical examiner, you must have a Medical Doctorate and be board certified in Forensic Pathology.
The Medical Examiner will also have a team of Forensic Pathology Technicians that help them before, during, and after evisceration. They often consist of both Dry Techs and Wet Techs. The difference between the two is that Dry Techs do not dress out in personal protective equipment (PPE) and will log things in whichever system the lab utilizes. Wet Techs assist in the autopsy by taking x-rays, removing organs, and weighing the organs.
What is PPE?
Standard PPE consists of a plastic gown, double disposable gloves to the wrist, disposable gloves to the elbow, boot covers, a surgical mask, a face shield, and what is known as a bouffant cap (the hair net / cap things you see surgeons wear in tv shows and movies).
The order I always put my PPE on was: boot covers, gown (with thumbs through the thumb holes), gloves #1, face mask, bouffant cap, gloves #2, face shield, elbow gloves.
Let's get into what you guys are really here for:
What does a standard autopsy look like?
So I like to make a distinction between these three stages: pre-autopsy, autopsy, post-autopsy.
Pre-autopsy is everything that happens before the body is open. This includes:
Weighing the gurney with the body bag on it
Moving the body bag from the gurney to the autopsy table
Taking pictures of the body bag BEFORE the seal is opened
Cutting the seal
Taking pictures of the body in the bag
Moving the body out of the bag
Taking more photos of the front, side, back, arms, and hands
Drawing toxicology (blood, urine, vitreous)
Taking fingerprints
The autopsy is when the Y-incision is created and the following occurs:
The organs of the thoracic cavity are taken, weighed, and eviscerated
The organs of the abdominopelvic cavity are taken, weighed, and eviscerated
The head is opened and the brain is taken, weighed, and eviscerated
The pituitary gland is removed
The esophagus and tongue are taken, weighed, and eviscerated
All organs are placed into a plastic bag
Post-autopsy includes:
Moving the body back to the bag
Placing the bag inside the thoracic cavity
Stitching the Y-incision closed
Cleaning any instruments used
Cleaning all surfaces, including the autopsy table and sink
Mopping the floor
In my experience, some of the things done during pre-autopsy, such as drawing toxicology and fingerprinting, can be done during the actual autopsy.
Why is toxicology important?
Toxicology is how we gain DNA and fluids for testing. Vitreous (fluid from the eyes) and Urine (fluid from the bladder) can be tested for metabolism of ethanol (alcohol) and other substances. Blood is used in testing for things like ethanol (alcohol) and CO (carbon monoxide) as well as DNA for identification.
Why do we need blood for identification?
In homicide cases, two forms of scientific identification are necessary. The order of importance / credibility of DNA collection is:
Visual identification - if they have an ID on them and we can tell that they are the person on the ID
Blood - a blood stain card is taken to test for identity
Fingerprints
Dental - if we have NOTHING ELSE, a forensic odontologist is called in to compare dental records to the teeth of the decedent
Little facts:
We do the Y-incision specifically for the funeral homes
Anything that you die with that the police doesn't collect for the family before the autopsy is put in holding until your body is released to the funeral home - including money
When blood has CO in it, it becomes a dark cherry red
Different needle sizes are used for drawing toxicology. The smallest size used is a 25-gauge. The largest is a 16-gauge.
Blood is drawn in this order: femoral (thigh), pericardial (around the heart), cardiac (in the heart)
Private autopsies are costly, ranging from $3000 to $5000
i think that's everything important. If you have any questions, have any additions, or find that this helped, send me an ask and let me know!
Be free!!!

Jason Todd & Autopsy Scars
If you're gonna give this boy autopsy scars you better talk about the commitment Ra's al Ghul had to bring this fucker back to life.
TW: gore
Give me Ra's sifting through the bag of organs smashed into Jason's thoracic cavity to find every piece of his brain. Give me Ra's piecing together his organs, putting them in Jason's chest so painstakingly carefully. Give me Ra's needing to supplement with other parts from other people.
Give me Jason forgetting certain things because parts of his brain are missing. Give me Jason with heart problems because his aorta didn't mend correctly. Give me Jason with asthma, or other pulmonary issues because his lungs were twisted up in that bag. Give me Jason, damaged but stubbornly pushing through it.
Y'all aren't committing and its making me sad as a forensic pathology assistant.

400 Word DC Drabble
Nightwing and Robin respond to an SOS for a college party turned hostage situation. Turns out, they didn't even need to show up.
Inspired by this post from @thebirdsandthebats ! Thank you for the idea, I hope I did it justice :)
Nightwing stood over the skylight, looking down at the situation below. There had been a normal college party going on that Tim had told him about, but things quickly went sour. A low-rank villain – some new guy Nightwing couldn’t bother remembering the name of – had attacked the party, taking most of the kids inside hostage. There weren’t many of them left. Most had escaped when the villain first attacked. Those who hadn’t were backed into a corner, huddled together as the D-lister hemmed and hawed about … something. Nightwing couldn’t really make out the words.
Robin stood next to him with his arms crossed. He frowned down at the new villain, sneering as he waved a gun around.
“He really does not have awareness, does he?”
Nightwing knew the question was rhetorical, a dig at the guy in the mask. Still, he said, “Apparently not. Shall we?”
Before they could break through the skylight, shattering the glass and making a grand entrance, one of the students broke away from the pack. Something about him seemed familiar. The villain had his back turned, so he didn’t see the guy pick up a folding chair. He also didn’t see the blonde guy take a full swing at the back of his head. The blonde guy clocked the villain over the head with the chair. A loud clang followed by the dull thump of a body hitting the floor resonated through the warehouse. Nightwing could see a noticeable dent in the chair’s frame. It was partially bent.
‘Damn,’ he thought. ‘That kid’s got a lot of anger.’
Then the student turned, and suddenly everything made sense. He was familiar because he had seen him before. He was the same guy that Tim had brought over for dinner, the same guy that Tim gushed about constantly, the same guy that collected every vigilante in Gotham to go beat up a cult of monsters and their masters just to get Robin back. The same kid – Bernard – that figured out Robin’s identity and loved him just as much as he had before the revelation. Nightwing was well aware, especially given the unhinged glint in his eyes, that Bernard had a lot of pent up anger and was angry enough to use it when the situation called for it… And sometimes when it didn’t.
‘Yeah,’ Nightwing thought. ‘We didn’t need to come. He had it under control.’

Jason Todd Angst Drabble
Jason likes to pretend that he doesn't care. The real problem is that he cares too much. Especially when it comes to his younger brothers.
Jason steers his bike to the side of the landing pad. He shifts the gear to neutral and cuts the engine before swinging the kickstand down with his foot. He sits for a minute, straddling the bike. He waits until his breathing has calmed down. He swings his leg over the bike and stands. Just stands. He can’t turn around.
A small hand with long, thin fingers rests on his shoulder.
Tim.
No one else has those weird little spider hands. Jason looks over his shoulder, glad for the helmet still on his head. If it wasn’t, Tim would see glowing green.
“It’s okay.” Tim squeezes his shoulder lightly before letting go. “No one will blame you.”
Jason sighs. “He will.”
Tim’s mouth turns to a frown. “He’ll get over it.”
“And if he doesn’t?”
Tim is quiet for a moment. The blue of his irises burns bright. If Jason didn’t know better, he would assume that Tim had taken his own dip in the Pit.
“Then we’ll make him.”
Jason nods and takes his helmet off, trusting that his eyes have gone back to normal. “Okay.”
The Batmobile roars into the cave. Damian is out of the car before the engine can cut. He slinks over, his posture prim and straight. Jason can see the tightness in his shoulders, though.
Tim taps the toe of his boot against the ground. “How is he?”
“Livid.”
Damian’s admission causes a churning feeling in Jason’s stomach. He feels ill.
The engine of the Batmobile turns off. The driver’s side door opens. Batman – not Bruce – storms over to the three boys. It was nights like these that make Jason wish Dick didn’t work over in Bludhaven. It was most nights, honestly.
“What were you thinking?” Batman growls.
Jason stands still. He can’t answer. His throat is too tight. He feels a phantom burning sensation across his neck.
Batman continues, gruff and angry. “A man died tonight. Because of you. You’re meant to use non-lethal rounds only and you deliberately–”
“He was going to kill Robin.”
Batman, stunned by the interruption, stands for a moment. He says nothing. Until…
“Robin can take care of himself.”
Jason can’t take it. “NO! He shouldn’t have to!” He points to Tim. “You didn’t see what I saw! He was cornered. He was scared. I wasn’t about to lose another brother! I had no choice!”
“That was not for you to decide!”
“Could you get your head out of your ass for two seconds!?” Jason feels like he’s a teenager again.
“We don’t ki–”
“You dont.” Jason’s voice was frigid. “You don’t kill. But what about them? The people we’re fighting? They do. And they aren’t going to take anyone away from me.”
Jason walks away, leaving Bruce – no longer Batman – standing in silence. He hits the button on the elevator up to the manor. As the elevator bells sounds, Jason looks at Bruce.
“Be glad they stand with you. Because you don’t deserve them.”
He steps inside and lets the doors close behind him, not turning around until the view of the cave disappears.

Psych, it's angst!!!
You guys have given me nothing but joy in creating this >:) Enjoy this little drabble giving Bernard even more issues!
As always, if you enjoy, you should check out my Ao3 :)
It wasn’t Bernard’s first time at a Wayne gala, having attended as a “friend” of Tim’s more than once. But it was the first time he was attending as Tim’s boyfriend – and he was loving it. Tim wouldn’t leave his side, a real, wide smile plastered on his face. And Bernard kept their arms looped together at all times, pressed against his boyfriend’s side. The night was going so well.
Too well.
It had to end eventually.
Gunshots rang through the air. Bernard was shoved to the ground behind an overturned table. Tim pressed up against him, hiding the two. He was breathing heavily.
“We need to go.” He sounded panicked. Not for himself, but for Bernard.
Bernard knew why. He knew all about Tim’s nightly activities. He shouldn’t have to be in that kind of danger outside of the suit.
“I’m staying.”
Tim whirled. He stared at Bernard. “What?”
“I’m staying. These people will need an EMT.”
“Yeah,” Tim agreed, “one on the clock. You’re off tonight!” He could barely be heard over the screaming and gunfire.
“I’m. Staying.”
Tim was silent for a moment. Only a second or two. And then…
“Fine. But so am I.”
“... Okay.”
No sooner than Bernard had said it, a shot was fired. Tim jolted forward with a stuttered cough.
“Urk!”
He squeaked as he fell forward into Bernard’s arms. The blonde saw red blossom from Tim’s gray suit jacket, near his right shoulder blade. Bernard looked up. The muzzle of a gun met his gaze.
The masked man squinted, peering down at the young man in Bernard’s arms. He yelped as he was shoved to the side, gun spinning across the floor. A large man in a red helmet stood in his place, shielding Bernard and his boyfriend. Bernard stared up at the Red Hood with unseeing eyes. He was almost in a trance, cradling Tim’s very still body against his own.
The Red Hood glanced back at them and swore. The words were distorted through his helmet’s voice changer. Bernard could hear the words, though he felt he was underwater.
“O! I need an extraction!”
He was quiet for a bit, pointing his gun in the direction of the other attackers.
“No, it’s Tim. He’s been hit. Not in uniform.”
He holstered his gun, the screaming having gone quiet. The sound was lowered to a murmur, though Bernard hadn’t noticed until then. He was too preoccupied. He glanced back down at his boyfriend’s limp form. He squeezed just a little bit tighter, afraid Tim would fall to pieces if he let go.
Tim groaned. Bernard sighed, shoulders slumping low as he bent forward over his knees. Tim rested stomach down across his lap, the blood from his suit jacket still flowing. Bernard pushed Tim off to lay on the firm floor before ripping off his own suit jacket to apply pressure to the wound.
“I’m sorry,” he muttered. “I’m so sorry.”
A rough gloved hand rested on his shoulder. He looked up, not letting up on the pressure of his hands.
“Nothing to be sorry for, kid.” The Red Hood looked down at him, eyes of his helmet glowing bright. “Hang tight ‘til your squad gets here. O called ‘em in.”
Bernard could do nothing but nod.
As he looked down again, he could hear nothing but his own thoughts. Red Hood’s words meant nothing when they weren’t true.
He had been the stubborn one.
He had insisted on staying.
It was his fault.
It was his fault.
It was his fault.
The flashing red of ambulance lights illuminated the walls. A wailing siren pierced the night.
“My fault,” he whispered.

Trying my hand at writing a little drabble:
Robin is honestly quite glad that he has Cassie's number when the guy he got half a date with becomes possessed.
Based on this post by @chamiryokuroi , thank you Cham for answering my ask :) this was fun. 10/10 will ask again
The flash of a knife as it plunged deep into a tan chest. Shocked gasps and held breaths. Then…
The thrum of drums. The whistle of panpipes. Thick purple fog rolled through the crumbling remains of the warehouse.
Robin watched as the body on the stone altar rose, the distorted laughter of two voices in the singular body echoing in his ears. He watched as Bernard, the young man he had been on a date with not even 24 hours ago, opened his eyes to reveal glowing orange.
“Oh, how I missed having a body,” he drawled, the two voices distorting his words. “It has been a while since I’ve been given a proper sacrifice.” He chuckles darkly. “Ooh! This will be fun!”
Robin sighed before reaching into his utility belt and pulling out his phone. The blonde tilted his head as he watched the hero dial a number and put the device up to his ear.
“What are you doing?” the distorted voices asked.
The dial tone ended as the other side picked up with a click.
“Hey Cassie,” he began.
Orange eyes widened, black sclera on full display. “Wait. Wait!”
“What’s up, Rob? You rarely call from this number.”
Robin glanced over at Bernard, the current vessel of Dionysus, as he waved his borrowed hands.
“I’ll leave, promise! Just, please. Pick anybody else!” he begged.
Robin sighed again and rolled his eyes. “We’ve got a situation. Can you get to Gotham? Fast? Your uncle is in my b– uh, friend’s body.”
Cassie groans. “Damn, which one?”
“Dionysus.”
The man in Bernard’s body shrieks. “Don’t tell her that!”
“Can you help?” Robin asked.
“Yep, be over in two.”
“Minutes?”
A gust of wind blew past him as Cassie landed.
She smirked. “Seconds.”
Across the stone room, there was a groan and a flash as Bernard’s body split, separating him from the new consciousness invading his mind. Bernard stumbled to his knees. Robin ran over, helping the disoriented young man up. When he looked up, Bernard’s arm slung over his shoulder, Cassie was shouting at a young man with orange fringe and pointed teeth.
“I can’t believe you!” she screamed, dragging him away by the ear. “Do you have any idea how embarrassing it is having to drag your ass back to Olympus!?”
“Ow. Ow. OW! Lighten up on the ear!” the young man screeched.
Cassie growled as he whined. “You better hope that grandfather is nicer than I am.”
“No, wait–”
Cassie disappeared in a flash, taking Dionysus with her. Robin and Bernard watched, one much more aware than the other. Robin sighed, his back slouching. He looked at Bernard, who was looking around with confusion. He smiled lightly, face softening as the blonde tried to find… something. Robin wasn’t quite sure.
“Let’s get you home,” Robin told him.
“Wait wait!” Bernard cried, flailing in Robin’s hold.
Robin slumped as Bernard writhed. “Woah! What? What is it?”
“I just… Can you tell Tim… Tim Drake… that I wish we could’ve finished our date?”
Robin hoped he wasn’t blushing, feeling his throat tighten and his cheeks warm. “Uhm… Y-yeah. Of course. Though, you’ll probably get the opportunity to do it yourself…”
Bernard grinned. There was a glint in his eyes that Robin couldn’t quite place.”
“I sure hope so.”
Just a quick little brain dump. If you want to read some of my more polished works, check out my ao3
