Welcome to the Zine O’Biology
A multi-fandom Star Trek Zine.
Do you have strong opinions on Vulcan fra’als, Cardassian tails, or how the heck Trill symbionts reproduce? We want to hear from you!
The Zine O’Biology is a fictional comparative xenobiology academic journal set in the Star Trek universe. If you’ve always wanted to wax eloquent for up to 3000 words about your theories on alien biology, welcome to your new home!
We want all your theories about all your favorite aliens! This is a friendly but competitive academic journal where the content of every paper is a little bit suspicious (is this paper based on rumor or fact? What is the methodology?) and some competing authors leave snarky comments on one another’s work. So just like a real academic journal, except ours features the Great Green Anthurium.
We welcome xenobiology articles on all Star Trek aliens from all series!
The final format will be a PDF that you can scroll at your leisure or print at home in order to have a physical copy of the Zine. (This way there is no money involved.)
--SEEKING SUBMISSIONS FOR--
Alien biology articles
Alien biology artwork
In-Universe advertisements
Letters to the editor
ALIEN BIOLOGY ARTICLES
How do Andorian genders work? Are Cardassians actually lizards? Why do Klingons have so many redundant organs? What’s the biological purpose of Bajoran nose ridges? What’s the best cement mix for emergency surgery on a Horta?
You’ve been pondering alien biology for years. This is your chance to infodump all your favorite theories to an eager audience of your fellow nerds!
Articles will be separated into two categories: reproductive biology or general biology. Yes, we also want all your theories on what every species is packing downstairs…and how they use it.
Journal articles should be fun and engaging, but also written in your interpretation of a pseudo-academic style, since this is a highly respected Federation xenobiology journal. If you want to keep things more lighthearted and less academic, check out the section on Letters to the Editor.
ALIEN BIOLOGY ARTWORK
If you have independent illustrations about alien biology we would love to see them! If you would like to provide illustrations for one of our journal articles, tell us what species you want to illustrate and we’ll do our best to match you up!
Art should be in a square, scaleable format, printable at high resolution at 4x4 inches.
JOURNAL ADVERTISEMENTS
Even in a post-need future, academic journals will need a little extra funding. Submit your ads for Ferengi Oomox Creme, Self Sealing Stem Bolts, Gently Used Federation Technology, and, of course, “reproductive aids.” The weirder the better! Have fun with it!
All art needs to be printable at high resolution
Ad Sizes:
1 column (vertical) 3.5 x 7
half page (horizontal) 8 x 5
banner (narrow horizontal) 8 x 2
in-text (square) 3.5 x 3.5 scaleable
in-text (half-square) 3.5 x 1.75
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Do you have a great idea, but it’s not enough to fill out a 3000 word article? Submit it as a “reaction” to a previous journal article. Feel free to lay into a mythical researcher who does NOT understand why their biological theory is wrong and yours is right!
Max length 800 words. Enjoy making these plenty frothy!
WE NEED SUB-EDITORS!
The creators of this Zine are all notorious Vulcan Fuckers. Since we want the Zine O’Biology to be open to all alien species, it is only logical that we seek your expertise.
We’re seeking fans from all over the Star Trek universe to spread the word that yes, it’s time for us to all come together in the spirit of explaining how our favorite aliens come together.
Sub-Editors will be in charge of helping us solicit articles and art for their specific race of aliens and editing those articles in order to fit into the Zine. If we don’t have a sub editor for a species, we’ll do our best, but the chapter on that species won’t be as good as it would be if folks with real fanon knowledge were involved.
WANT TO GET INVOLVED, BUT YOU’RE NOT A WRITER OR ARTIST?
WE NEED:
Graphic designers to help with Zine layout
Social media promoters
Alien art and article wranglers (ie: get your fannish friends involved!)
--HOW TO GET INVOLVED--
Fill out the Art or Writing Google Form letting us know your interests or reach out to the Editor in Chief at [email protected]
DEADLINES:
August 1, 2024: Last date for everyone seeking an art or writing partner to submit their request. We don’t guarantee you’ll be partnered up. It depends on how many people are interested and what aliens they want to draw/write.
August 18, 2024: Art/Writing partners notified. NOTE: it’s both fine and encouraged if you want to submit as a team from the start! This is for people who do not have a partner and would like us to find them one.
August 30, 2024: Final call for all journal authors, artists, and advertisers to let us know what species they’re working with, how many submissions they plan to send, and whether their submission will be general or reproductive biology.
October 20, 2024: All art, advertising, and journal submissions are due
We hope to have the Zine O’Biology ready for your enjoyment by New Year’s Eve 2024. We all have full time jobs and lives, so that date may change depending on the volume of submissions.
FAQ
What if my biological theories are totally different from another author’s?
Yes. Perfect. We love it.
We want to see everyone’s theories! Canon gave us scraps, but together we will make a meal! Expect to see many mutually contradictory articles. That’s part of the fun!
What about Smut?
Yes, we are accepting E rated submissions! The journal will be separated into two sections:
General Biology
Reproductive Biology
General Biology is everything but the genitals
Reproductive Biology should include actual descriptions of the mechanics and biology. Think of it as creating reference material for smut writers and artists.

Call for Writer Submissions!
Goosewax Online Journal is an independent site dedicated to helping talented new writers enter the world of literary journal publication. Submission is free, turnaround times to hear back are about a week, and previously published work is a-okay! I'm a writer too and I know how maddening the journal submission process can be, so I founded Goosewax to help writers get their foot in the door and gain a publication credit without the frustration that usually comes with submission.
I'm looking for short stories, creative nonfiction, and poetry. There's as few rules as possible, but be sure to read the listed requirements on the submission page before submitting. If you have any questions, feel free to DM my main Tumblr @jellogram or email [email protected]. There's also an FAQ linked in my pinned post. You can check out previously published works at the home page: goosewax.wordpress.com
Where to submit:
This is a very new journal, so reblogs are greatly appreciated as I try to get the word out! Thank you!

Art and Publications 2023 in review
Another year, another wrap-up, another reflection. This art year was on the light side. Yeah, saying that is like a broken record: As with bike touring (which I’ll get into in a subsequent post), I never do enough. But it’s more a bummer this year, as last year things were more on the up, as I started painting again. But I don’t remember picking up my watercolor kit at all this year. True, I did…

hello! i apologize in advance this is probably something that you get asked a lot. but do you have any recs on literary magazines to submit to? im a trans poet, ive been writing for over a decade but never shared anything and ive been wanting to try to send my stuff to get it published somewhere. obv ive been google searching but theres so many big and small publications and i was wondering if you have ones you like especially and/or tips on how to choose a magazine/journal to submit to. thanks a lot! <3
no worries, thank you for reaching out!! i've been publishing for like 8 years + an editor for almost 4, so i always appreciate the opportunity to help people new to the world find ethical publications that will treat their work with the care it deserves.
first and foremost: there are going to be pubs out there that are awesome and i don't know about. you may be the one to discover them for yourself! one aid in finding the best mag for your work is the wonderful, writer-created chillsubs. it's a fantastic platform that keeps a huge list of mags and presses and their relevant stats, and lets you create an account and bookmark those you're interested in. everyone i know uses them, and it's very worth it given the sheer volume of mags out there.
i also have some recs of my own, ofc. i'm going to list them below. if they pay (which i prioritize) I'll mark them with a $. some are trans/queer focused and some aren't, but all are pubs i've either edited and/or published with and can confirm their ethics + respect for writers.
manywor(l)ds - my mag! i'm co-founder and eic. break genre _ shapeshift with us. ($)
Sinister Wisdom - old, well-regarded lesbian+ lit mag, now open to everyone who is/loves a dyke. I'm guest-editing an issue on Madness with them, now open for submissions!
fifth wheel press - run by a beloved friend and comrade of mine. i've published here. excellent transparency, care, great for first-timers. ($).
kith books - headed by trans literary icon kat blair. a mag/press/community centered around bodymind non-conformity and noncompliance.
Honey Literary - QTPOC-centered, unabashedly pop-culture + social justice oriented. the vibes are simply immaculate.
Whale Road Review - not queer/trans focused, more oriented toward....'grown up' poetry/prose/pedagogy papers. Katie Manning (eic) is a fucking gem.
Graphic Violence Lit - just had my first experience publishing with them, and their care + consideration for the whole writer is amazing. they publish boundary-pushing work.
beestung - one of the brainchildren of Sarah Clark. nb/gq/2s SFF. I just edited a few guest issues w them and have published with them. amazing work. ($)
A Velvet Giant - genrequeer work. the editors are experienced, enthusiastic, and amazing at promoting writers long after publication. it's a family! ($)
Ethel Zine + Press - handmade with love by Sara Lefsyk (as you can see, trans/nonbinary/2s sarahs dominate indie publishing, as well we should :3). Sara is a sensitive and care-full editor and bookmaker whose every publication is a work of art.
Protean - pro- as in proletariat. awesome left mag with a mix of politics and culture and everything in between. they take reprints! ($)
Mudroom - publish your work along with a picture of your mudroom/shoe rack. very responsive editors who will hype you tf up. ($)
The Institutionalized Review - for psych survivors. the editors concreteness of vision and dedication to their community know no bounds.
Just Femme + Dandy - queer and fashion-focused! led by the inimitable Addie Tsai. They pay *handsomely*. ($)
In addition, there are also some "big" mags I have had excellent experiences publishing with and wanted to shout out. These are harder for a beginner to break into, but worth keeping on your radar + have been fantastic to me as a writer.
Electric Lit
Split Lip Magazine
The Offing
Nat. Brut
Santa Fe Writers' Project
Bodega
New Orleans Review
Augur Magazine
I hope this is helpful to you + others! the literary world is ever-changing and this is just a snapshot. Hopefully you find some that you like!

do you have any resources for questioning people (esp gender?)
It's hard to answer this without more detail tbh because I'm not sure exactly what form of resources you're looking for. The biggest pieces of advice I can give you are 1) read everything, 2) follow trans people, and 3) actively experiment and play with your gender.
Read queer history, read old zines, read memoirs by trans people. Read trans fiction and queer theory. Follow trans people whose content resonates with you.
Get out there and do gender in person if it is safe for you to do so: try out different names and pronouns, meet other queer and trans and gender non-conforming people, try out expressing your gender through your appearance in different ways.
If you're looking for specific recommendations:
The Gender Quest Workbook - Starts out very basic Gender 101 style, with questioning gender roles and then moves towards exploring gender expression and transition.
My Queer Year - I'm still working on this, have been for more than a year. Not gender specific, it's more of a planner + guided journal with a queer theme. A lot of the topics can be personally related to gender; I've written in mine on topics including dysphoria, euphoria, gender expression in public, and medical transition.
Accepting Gender - Gender workbook based in ACT (acceptance and commitment) therapy. This is on my list to read, and I'm not yet familiar with the actual content of the book. It's an option that exists.
I'm going to recommend transreads.org. There are a bunch of books on there available in pdf format that you can just download and read.

Website Update and Announcement For Major Project
Our website, The Chimeras Library, has been updated.
Changes include:
An Updated "Symbols Found In The Alterhuman Communities" which now includes the symbols for endels, archetropes, and conceptkin!
An overhauled "A Deeper Look Into Cladotherianthropy."
Added a Spanish translation of  "A Timeline of the Therianthrope Community." Translated by the alterhuman aike.
Added a Spanish translation of "A Timeline of the Fictionkin Community." Translated by the alterhuman aike.
Added a Spanish translation of "A Timeline of the Alterhuman Community." Translated by the alterhuman aike.
Added a Spanish translation of "A Timeline of Plant-Identified People in the Otherkin Communities." Translated by the alterhuman aike.
We're also happy to announce a major project we hope to be sharing in the near future.
The Chimeras Archive.
The Chimeras Archive will consist of an ever updating link to a Zotero account hosting citations for the over 500 items of various media related to the alterhuman community, mentioning alterhumans, or of interest to alerhumanity.
Categories that will be included: academic books, dissertations, journal articles, academic lectures, theses, non-academic books, documentaries, lecture or convention panels, magazine articles, zines, TV broadcasts, newspaper articles, radio broadcasts, podcasts, novels, comics, games, movies, plays, and more.
The Chimeras Archive is an updated version of a project we have been working on for the past decade. We are committed to collecting materials as they relate to alterhuman and sharing their existence with others. This includes not only collecting the citations of these many different kinds of media but also acquiring physical/digital copies of these materials.
Unlike our other projects which have designated versions published in pdf form. Our plan is to instead run a live and updating Zotero listing and a document where the same information will be listed in written form.
As this is a massive overhaul of our existing project, the completion into these two formats is taking a significant amount of time please see our "Academic Publications, Non-Academic Publications, Media, Art, and Fiction Related To Nonhumanity" for the previous rendition of this project in the mean time. We plan on releasing links to our Zotero and the live document in the near future once we have had a chance to better layout the groundwork for them.

A while ago i sent you this poem [https://sprachgitter.tumblr.com/post/736478972385345536/one-day-the-exile-and-the-fleeing-will-have-earth] and a few weeks ago, I wrote my grieving friend a ghazal. She would like to see it published so we've decided every time I'm agitated or overwhelmed with people's apathy in North America, I'll submit it to another publication/zine/journal. In my friend's words, "Nothing scares them as much as words" 🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉
I remember this poem its so amazing. Thank you so much for saying this, I think your friend is right, nothing scares them as much as words. Please do keep talking and talk about the other struggles in Darfur, DRC, Tigray, and around the world as well. Let us work together to make a more free world!

A point that I think I recall learning from Doug Henwood’s old Left Business Observer ’zine is that you can find more frank discussion of the realities of capitalist economics in the business section of a good newspaper than in the news pages. That’s because whatever the businessmen’s biases, they really do want reliable business information. Back during the big gas price crunch, there were all kinds of nonsense about U.S. oil production running in the political press, but also a lot of really solid (albeit tedious) articles in the business press. You really see this in the perennial complaining about 538’s election forecasts. If you think of these forecasts as business intelligence for people who like to gamble on elections, you’ll see that the forecasts are really good. They’re not good in the sense of “the candidate who they say will win always wins,” both because that’s impossible and also because that would be bad forecasting. They’re good because roughly 70% of the candidates they say have a 70% chance of winning actually end up winning. This is to say their forecasts are well-calibrated, and if you could find deep and liquid markets in which to bet on all these races, you could make money following 538’s advice. The reason people are always mad at them is that even though there’s a great deal of public interest in elections and predictions, it’s cheap talk, fandom-style interest. Few people really care about accuracy, so even though the track record is excellent, the site makes no money and is apparently on the chopping block. I use that as an example not because 538 is the only good journalism around, but because the nature of their project is that you can actually clearly demonstrate that they are doing a good job — and it doesn’t make a difference! I bet there is some small business trade journal somewhere that has staff who are really sweating the details on trying to understand to what extent shoplifting has risen and where and what the policy drivers of it might be, but you’re definitely not going to find that in the mainstream press.

Prompts, prompts, and more prompts!
Hello everyone! We have decided to throw some prompts out there from people who may not be able to participate (or are already participating), but had amazing ideas!
The First: Consider dehydration levels and their impact on the Vulcans self lubrication system. Their bodies are designed to conserve moisture and yet they self lubricate. So at what level of dehydration does their system cease prioritizing that function in favour of greater survival? Prompt courtesy of @celestialvoyeur
If you would like to submit a prompt DM me or send an ask!

Hello! For the summer prompts, if you feel the inspiration, I'd love to see "sunburn" and "mosquito" combined please! 💜
2. Sunburn + 29. Mosquitos
from summer prompt memes here
i'm at the beach for a little bit, so i am in a beachy mood and wanted to send these guys off to one too!! been so busy with zine stuff that I haven't had time to write a silly fic in a while, so here's a short one :-)
----------------------------------------------------------
“This is fun, isn’t it?” Newt says.
Hermann, swathed under a large sunhat and a loose terrycloth button-down, peers out at the ocean with an expression that Newt might call, generously, vague skepticism, and ungenerously outright distaste. But the crease in his brow smooths out as he turns his attention towards Newt, and he quirks up the corner of his mouth. Not exactly a smile from anyone but Hermann. “Er, yes,” he says. “It’s very—hot. But lovely,” he adds quickly. “Very—hot, and lovely.”
Newt hasn’t been to the beach—for non-work related reasons, which is to say a beach that isn’t crawling in, like, enough xenobiological radiation to kill him under ten minutes without the proper PPE—in what must be almost fifteen years at this point, back since the days when he used to crouch for hours over tide pools and scribble barely-legible notes in a composition book before he had to hustle back off to campus for class. Baby’s first field journal. The Pacific coasts are still very much a gamble for a fun day out, but they’re chilling outside DC for the week while they’re traded between nearby universities and fancy banquet halls to get their hands shaken and backs patted or whatever, and by God (Newt decided) he was going to take Hermann on a good, proper beach date if it killed him. Metaphorically. Hopefully not actually with kaiju blue poisoning, because that would suck.
Whether through the lingering effects of their drift or Hermann just being fluent in Newtonian mannerisms at this point, he picked up on Newt’s ulterior motives for insisting on getting a jeep from the car rental place pretty much immediately. He was at least surprisingly chill about it all: all he did was tell Newt, calmly, that he’ll need to stop off at a department store for the proper attire, and that Newt might want to consider a motel room as well so they don’t have to spend seven hours on the road in one day, both of which were pretty reasonable requests. Newt was just planning on swimming in boxers. Not like anyone but Hermann would be able to tell the difference.
They hit miserable traffic on the world’s most terrifying bridge while the A/C sputtered tragically at them (Newt is so asking for a partial refund, it’s July man, come on), and Hermann stared out the window at the ocean a long drop below without making a peep while Newt tried to awkwardly fill the silence with anything that came to his head. Mostly about how much fun they were going to have. They shelled out ten bucks for parking at the public access beach and even more money to rent a tattered umbrella, and the beach was just enough on the wrong side of practically empty that it set both of them on edge (though Newt could tell Hermann was trying to hide it). People are still a little wary of setting foot within fifteen miles of an ocean.
It's romantic, Newt told Hermann, and he tried to rub sunblock on his shoulders sensually, but accidentally jabbed his thumb in the wrong way and made Hermann full-body recoil away from him. I can handle that, he told Newt tersely, but he gave Newt a small thank-you kiss anyway as he wrestled the bottle away from him. The umbrella doesn’t work—too many metal prongs broken with age or over-use. Newt wonders if they dug it out of the bottom of the pile or something. Not wanting to risk getting impaled by a spoke, they ended up closing it and just hoping the sunblock does the job right.
“You’re hot and lovely,” Newt tries, lamely.
Hermann doesn’t acknowledge Newt’s half-assed flirting beyond a small sigh. Newt can’t blame him. Hermann lifts the brim of his hat, peering at a fly that’s just landed on Newt’s calf, and Newt winces a second later when it bites him. "Fuck," he says, and slaps at it. It buzzes away angrily to Hermann’s ankle, presumably to bite him too, so Newt leans forward to valiantly shoo it again. Hermann looks down at him in mingled annoyance and fondness. “Biting flies,” Newt sighs. “Forgot about these bastards.” Benefits of living in various UN-sanctioned basements for ten-odd years, weird bugs that like to cause you bodily harm are a rare occurrence.
“Newton, ah,” Hermann says, adjusting the brim of the hat against a sudden gust of slightly fishy sea-breeze, “how long did you want to stay out here? On the beach, I mean?”
“As long as you want, dude,” Newt says. It’s date-day, and when they drive back they’ll be consumed by their lectures and suits and making good impressions again, so he wants to enjoy himself for as long as possible. More specifically he wants Hermann to enjoy himself for as long as possible. Then again—he’s hot and a little on the sting-y side of tanned, and he’s pretty sure he just saw a mosquito settling on Hermann’s shoulder. “Why, did you want to leave?”
He sounds pathetically hopeful and immediately feels guilty about it. He hyped this up to Hermann so much, he’s not gonna ruin the guy’s fun. “No, no,” Hermann says. “Of course not. I’m having—er—a wonderful time.” He begins to scratch absently at his shoulder. There’s a small bump rising up from what looks like a gnarly patch of sunburn.
“Cool,” Newt says.
“Bit buggy though, isn’t it?” Hermann says. He scratches at another mosquito bite on his ankle.
“It’s not too bad!” Newt says. “I can deal with it.”
“If you're sure,” Hermann says.
They pack the rented jeep up around sunset when the public beach blessedly closes at last. Newt drops the busted umbrella twice on the dunes on the hike back to the parking lot, and Hermann (who’s clutching on to Newt so he doesn’t lose his footing on the uneven ground) finally loses his sunhat for good when he tries to bend down to help Newt the second time: it’s caught in the wind and blown out to sea. They watch sadly as a wave swallows it. “I’ll buy you another one,” Newt says.
They sit in silence in the jeep for a few minutes when Newt starts it, enjoying the A/C (however weak it is) after a day spent in the thick humidity. Hermann’s bony shoulders and fine cheekbones are lobster-red. He’s scratching absently at his thigh. It’s the first time Newt’s ever seen the guy in shorts, and he can’t even enjoy it through the uncomfortable haze of guilt. “Newton,” Hermann finally sighs. “I very much appreciate your, er, enthusiasm for the day, but—” He touches the back of his red neck, wincing, and cranks the A/C up a notch. “—perhaps next time, we might just see a film, or go for dinner?”
“Oh, my God,” Newt says. He sags in the driver’s seat. “Fucking yes, please. That was awful.” It’s cruel to rip them from the comfort of their underground lab and drop them back into the elements of, like, the great outdoors without some build-up, even if this was in fact all Newt’s doing. Like a zoo putting a penguin in a lion habitat or something. Except Newt was the one to tell them to do it.
“It was terrible,” Hermann agrees.
“Why the hell didn’t you say something?!” Historically Hermann has never, ever had a problem bitching at Newt about even the slightest inconvenience or perceived annoyance.
“You went to all that trouble,” Hermann says, “and I was trying to be—” He grits his teeth. “Nice.”
“Gross, dude,” Newt says. “Don’t ever do that again.”

i do feel like we’re giving band of brothers a bit too much credit here. there is still a very deep undercurrent of “america is the best country on earth and yeah the war was bad but in the end we were a big ol’ Band of Brothers.” there’s a reason a lot of actual vets of recent American imperial wars thing TP is better
I mean... yeah? that's what I meant by "WW2 Nostalgia Propaganda of the Bush Regime (that the US government used to fuel the war on terror) and that's why I said The Pacific is a critique of that specifically.
my posts' point wasn't "which show is better than the other (i.e. BoB vs GenKill vs TP)" in terms of "what show has less america-first propaganda"? my posts' point is: the writing of BoB, GenKill, and TP are far superior to MotA simply by having a point/something to say about war that goes beyond "this shit sucks" and "💫cinema💫"
and if this is in reply to my "oh i hate hbo war it makes me want to examine the american public's relationship to war and how it's depicted in their war media" uuuuhhhh. i IMPLORE you to read that post again. properly this time?
............ sorry, that was snippy. just. reading comprehension's your friend, buddy.
anyway, if you wanna have that convo by all means we can have it. Though anything I can say about it has already been said better by Christopher Hayes and his essay The Good War on Terror (that you can find an EXCELLENT zine on, over here) and the journal article Operation Enduring Analogy: World War II, the War on Terror, and the Uses of Historical Memory by David Hoogland Noon, which is also very good. I sound like a broken record recommending them so much, BUT THEY JUST GET IT OK.
If you want a more contemporary essay try this one by the Washington Post The Danger of American Nostalgia for World War II by Robert G. Kaiser. This has a whole section ripping into BoB the show and Ambrose's work. Alas. It is behind a paywall. But there are ways around that *wink wink.*
edit: ok, sorry I'm being a little mean and a lot snippy HAHAHAHA but I really do feel like you're shouting this argument from the other side of the room-- meaning, it has its place as a conversation, but maybe not in the conversation that was already happening (i.e. why MotA's writing sucks). next time, I think we'd both benefit if you yelled 'SIDE-BAR' or 'WAIT, CHANGE SUBJECT' first before launching into a new tangent. kisses to you anon, I'm not mad, I promise. I have tone problems.
