there's this borderline hysterical laugh garak breaks into a couple of times during the early seasons that is so special to me. like. this man. this man is so high (constantly) and probably drunk (frequently) and he's at all times teetering on the very brink of despair that only pure spite, immense stubbornness, and getting to gaze at julian bashir's smiling face across the lunch table once a week is holding him back from tipping over. and then he has to deal with people like skrain dukat and gul toran on top of that and you can practically hear the cracks forming as he's barely holding on to whatever remains of his sanity by the skin of his teeth

I enjoy Kira/Keiko as a ship, but I wish that most of the discussion about them didn’t center on the “O’Brien polycule”. I’m interested in how their dynamic changed from vaguely adversarial in “In the Hands of the Prophets” to friendly in later seasons. I want to know how they navigated the differences in their opinions on faith and religion. I want to know if/how Keiko’s thoughts on Bajoran religion changed over time. I want to know if Kira experienced any lingering resentment toward Keiko. I want to know how long it took them to become friends – if one or both of them made a great effort to mend the divide between them. I want to know if they have disagreements after that or if they carefully try to avoid speaking about topics where their opinions differ. There’s a lot that’s potentially interesting about their dynamic outside of how it relates to Miles.

A quote that describes Garak really well for me, is this one from Lazlo, from WWDITS
"You really are the most devious bastard in...new York city"

thinking about the recurring theme of sisko being someone who constantly comes adrift in time, literally and metaphorically, physically and emotionally. no matter how much he wants to stay here, and how hard he tries to, he drifts, he comes unmoored. you exist here. and always existing here means he can't exist there simultaneously; one precludes the other. and the grief of that truth that rings like a bell through his whole existence at once. hm.

This was all I could think while watching this 💀
[Video description:
clips from an episode of strange new worlds, edited with audio from deep space nine.
The camera focuses on T’Prill, T’Pring’s mother as she speaks, but instead of her voice it’s Zek, the Farengi leader from Star Trek deep space nine. He says: “I predict a big future for you Pel, you certainly have the lobes”
The camera then cuts to Spock and the voice of Pel says “so, you like my lobes?”
The camera briefly shows T’Pring, looking at Spock with confusion as Quark’s voice says “Pel?”
The camera then cuts back to T’Prill, and Zek’s voice says “yes, I do”
Finally the camera cuts back to Spock who takes off his fake Vulcan ears as Pel’s voice says “good! Then you can have them!” The voices of Zek and Rom can be heard screaming as he does this.]

Very preoccupied with Garak’s brain implant right now. What level of pain would trigger it? Like would it only kick in if he was actually being tortured, or would all pain of all kinds turn it on? I like to imagine it’s the latter and Garak went like fifteen entire years without experiencing any physical pain. Maybe he’d even stub his toe on purpose if he needed a mood booster.
And can you imagine the unbelievably difficult adjustment period he must have had after it was turned off? Getting a cut and expecting it to feel good. Waking up with a stiff neck after sleeping poorly and groaning in pain rather than moaning in pleasure. Finding out he’s not nearly as kinky as he thought he was. Maybe he didn’t used to mind at all if his needle pricked his finger but now he has to learn how to sew all over again without hurting himself.

You know, the more I watch Deep Space 9, the more Sisko is becoming my favorite Star Trek Captain. In some ways, more so than Picard, and definitely more than Kirk (I haven't seen Voyager yet). Like, don't get me wrong, it took a season before Avery Brooks seemed to settle into the role, but once he did... ugh... *chef's kiss*
Heck, I didn’t think I'd like DS9 nearly as much as TNG, but the whole cast has grown on me. They feel alive in ways TNG didn’t, not to say that TNG was in any way flat or uncompelling because that also was. Like, I don’t know how to put it, but the cast is just so vibrant in DS9 in a way that doesn't feel as overtly space melodrama.
