Fire Resistant [Part 2/2]
Title: Fire Resistant [Part 2] Characters: (Young) Enji Todoroki, Black Female OC Manga/Anime: Boku No Hero Academia (My Hero Academia) Genre: High School, Platonic Relationships Summary: A couple years after graduating, Enji is making his name as Endeavour when he crosses paths with a familiar face in an unexpected way.
Part 1 here! Part 2
It was the middle of a search and rescue mission when Endeavour saw her. A little girl who should definitely be sitting in a first grade class somewhere, disappearing into the flames. What kind of child-
No one else seemed to notice her so he dashed over and peeked around. Shouldn’t this kid at least be afraid of all the noise? “Hey, little girl! Get back here!”
She paid his booming voice no mind, skipping further into the wall of flames. Those fighting the blaze were already stretched thin as it was. And how had no one else noticed her? Considering his size, Endeavour would’ve been surprised that he himself noticed her but that was what a hero trained for. This was what the BEST hero did.
When he finally caught up to the munchkin, he had to physically snatch her from running off again, causing her to yelp. He turned off the flames on his shoulder, holding her out at arm’s length as she squirmed. “What is wrong with you? Can’t you see the danger you’re in?”
Her little face scrunched up and she fought even more to get away. Endeavour switched to holding her with one hand to avoid crushing the tiny thing.
***
When all was said and done, nearly everyone was accounted for. Until one of the sidekicks screeched. “Endeavour, there’s a kid by your leg! Cut your fire off!”
He did, looking down.
The little girl jumped in surprise and began tapping around his leg, blinking curiously.
“You again,” Endeavour muttered.
Another sidekick walked up. “You know this kid?”
Endeavour watched the girl patter around his legs, presumably looking for his fire. “I got her out of one of the buildings earlier. She was just wandering around with no sense of danger or fear at all. Shouldn’t someone have claimed her by now?”
“Well uh-”
“Rhoda!” a female voice exclaimed accompanied by pounding footsteps.
The little girl looked up, smiling when her gaze fell on the woman rushing toward them.
Endeavour scowled at the two as the unknown woman scooped up the little girl and nuzzled her cheek. He folded his arms. “Where were you? Your daughter nearly burned to death.”
The woman huffed, unabashed by the large man’s demeaning tone or stature. “Well, seeing as she is, as you rightfully assumed, my daughter, I have no doubt in my mind that that could never happen. The smoke would take her, maybe, but she’d never burn.” She peppered kisses over the child’s cheeks, mirroring the little one’s grin.
The sidekicks exchanged looks. “What do you mean that couldn’t happen? That fire was crazy huge and she was just wandering around in there.”
Endeavour frowned at the woman. “It’s ridiculously irresponsible for you to leave such a young child unattended. Fire or not. What kind of mother are you?”
The woman matched his frown with an upward tilt of her head. “I would’ve hoped you would’ve gotten an attitude adjustment since joining the workforce, you walking blowtorch but nope, still the same Enji. Just bigger.” She settled a bit, readjusting the girl in her arms. “Nice control on the flaming facial hair, by the way. Much less drama than the shoulders, I imagine.”
Endeavour regarded the woman with disdain before surprise took over his features.
The sidekicks were beside themselves. “Did that lady just call Endeavour-”
“He wouldn’t attack a civilian, would he?”
“She’s got balls of steel, considering he saved her kid.”
The woman grinned as she saw the recognition in his eyes. “Yep! It’s me!”
Endeavour heaved a great sigh. “She inherited your quirk, that’s why you’re so confident.”
“Uh huh! My genes must be super strong cuz Rhoda’s fire-resistant just like her momma!” She giggled as the little girl patted all over her face before pointing down to Endeavour’s boots. “Go on, Enji! Op, I mean, Endeavour! Sorry, you’re on the clock still. Light ‘em up!”
Endeavour blinked slowly. “She inherited your lack of a sense of danger as well. I should’ve known.”
Little Rhoda scrambled down and patted around the Flame Hero’s boots again, pressing both her hands to where his toes would be.
Molly tilted her head at Endeavour. “C’mon, humor me, please? It would make her day. She loves seeing you on tv.”
One of the sidekicks raised an eyebrow, whispering. “A kid who likes Endeavour?”
The young Flame Hero grunted. “I’m not some sideshow for your spawn.”
Molly folded her arms. “You’re lucky she can’t hear or that would’ve hurt her feelings.”
He scrunched his eyebrows. “What?”
“Rhoda was born deaf. But as you can see,” she motioned down to where her daughter was sitting on Endeavour’s right foot and hugging his leg. “Doesn’t slow her down not a bit.”
“With you for a mother, I don’t see how it would.” He huffed.
“Why, thank you. So you do still have some acknowledgement in there somewhere.” She grinned. “Please give her some flame. Just a couple bursts? I promise I’ll be out of your hair right after!” She clasped her hands together with puppy eyes.
“Hmp. You haven’t change at all since we were teenagers. Do better for your kid.”
Molly huffed lightly, shaking her head. “Oh no, I have.” She looked down at the girl with a fond smile. “You might get it when you have kids. IF you ever have kids.” She barked a laugh. “Oh my gosh, imagining you as a father! I couldn’t picture it in a million years.”
Endeavour glared at her.
“You’ve got the ‘shape up’ face down though, if you do ever find some poor woman to settle down with your workaholic backside.” She crouched down on her heels, tapping Rhoda on the shoulder.
The little girl looked back at her, tightening her grip on Endeavour’s leg.
Molly held out her hand, waving her palm towards herself and tilting her head.
Endeavour watched them at his feet for a moment. His foot ignited a bit, small licks of fire dancing about his boot.
Rhoda jumped before her eyes went wide with delight and she patted his leg, looking back at her mother in awe.
Molly smiled up at him as she watched Rhoda run her hands curiously up and down the flames, giggling as they returned as soon as she removed her little hand. “Thanks, Endeavour.”
He tossed his head in indignation. “I need to get back to the agency. You’ve held me up long enough here.” He barked orders to the remaining sidekicks, berating them for standing around.
Molly smiled as Rhoda allowed her to detach her from the flaming leg. “Good job, Enji.”
He actually tilted his head to look at her as he turned to leave, waiting.
“You stuck to that intense drive of yours and undoubtedly pursuing your goal. Living up to that hero name of yours. I don’t mind my daughter looking up to you in that regard. We’re both rooting for you.”
Endeavour acknowledged her with a nod. I guess being a mother isn’t a waste of your potential if you managed to birth a child with the same attributes. “Two of you isn’t the worst thing that could happen to society.”
Molly shook her head with a grin, shifting her daughter in her arms so Rhoda could wave goodbye to her favourite young hero. She waved as well.
Endeavour put up a hand as he walked off.

Todoroki Family AU but it’s just the parent trap in reverse.
Fuyumi and Toya scheming to get Enji and Rei to divorce so that they have don’t to live together anymore.
“I’m so sick of you, let’s live in different countries.”
Fuyumi wants to live with Enji & Shoto and Toya wants to move abroad with Rei & Natsuo.
To Toya’s dismay, they do divorce but just move down the street so the kids can be close to eachother. He has a dramatic meltdown about it.

“endeavor could’ve been a good dad if-“ he chooses his bride because of her genetic makeup and has no qualms with her feeling forced into this marriage, endeavor's creepy power dynamics existed before dabi was born 😭🤚

"If you're too short to stare down your nose at someone, keep your chin down, your eyes up, and don't blink. It's not as threatening, but it will show you are not afraid." -Mai (probably)
...
In exploring various avenues to go about a Ghost Hunt/My Hero crossover, one of the more entertaining dynamics I think would be the interactions between Mai and Endeavor.
To put it bluntly, there is a strength behind Mai’s character that I don’t think we in the Ghost Hunt fandom give her near enough credit for, and that is the fact that on a fundamental level, Mai is fearless.
As per general anime protagonist behavior, she is almost exactly like Deku when it comes to doing what she perceives to be the right thing.  Reckless, yes, and she is often running headlong into danger, but it’s important to remember Mai has also never been afraid to call anyone out on their bad behavior.
Within minutes of meeting Ayako, she called her out for talking down to her classmate, a classmate she was not even particularly close to.
She often calls out Masako and Naru both for their condescension and attitudes.
Takigawa was physically holding her back from going after the faculty at Rokuryou.
She called out Lin pretty quickly for his bullshit.
And she straight up yells at everyone in the very first case for their bickering and posturing even though she barely knew any of them.
In canon, Mai jumps at ghosts and she is easily unsettled/frightened, but even against Urado, she still has the inherent resolve to think, ‘Okay, you need to go.’
Also recall the fact that she has not hesitated to out Naru twice on minor secrets solely because he pissed her off.  That whole bit in the Labyrinth case where she demands to know why he didn’t tell them the full reason why they were there and he just answers with how ‘some people don’t know when to keep their mouth shut.’  Yeah, he didn’t say that because he didn’t think she could keep the secret.  Homeboy straight up knew she would weaponize that information if given the chance.
For all her compassion and the ‘good girl’ vibes we remember her for, Mai is petty af.
...
This is why I like writing Mai as an adult.  Canonically as a teenager, she’s already formidable in her own way.  As a young adult who’s dealt with Naru and company for a few years and has subsequently gotten used to the constant razzing and sass the whole group brings to the table (and let's be real, nobody in My Hero Academia would be prepared for the full force of SPR's combined sass,) adult Mai would be a force of nature.
So as intimidating as Endeavor is, I legitimately think Mai’s reaction to him would be a resolute,  “I don’t care if he’s three times my size and on fire, nobody speaks that way in my presence and gets away with it.  Hold my purse, hold my beer, time for a verbal ass-whooping.”
And then there’s Yasuhara saying, “Go off, sis,” and filming for posterity.
Speaking of SPR's favorite bespectacled fiend, Yasuhara has definitely hit on everyone in the top ten.
Tumblr media
Yasuhara and Mai both have probably ended up in this situation, possibly at the same time and the end result is always the same:
Naru stepping in.
"What exactly is your plan here? Putting them down or harming them are your only two options right now, only one of which is the smart option. Unhand them. You're embarrassing everyone."
...
SPR really be the Animaniacs sibs to every Pro with an ego. Which is, like, 90% of Pros. And villains.
...
But yeah, general cattiness between Mai and Endeavor:
"I didn't see you there, Taniyama. Perhaps your lackluster and unremarkable costume was to blame."
"Not all of us are trying to signal that Gondor calls for aid."

It seems good to me that Horikoshi has decided that ED has this past with his father and in my opinion this does not make him look "soft" or that he justifies his actions on the contrary, this reinforces the personality and thoughts that we already knew about him. He himself said in today's chapter "that ugly heart of yours"
Yes indeed. I get the confusion, because honestly, the writing of this whole scene is a hot mess.
But one thing to me was clear - I feel like Enji's reaction to (his/the) father's death is some kind of mix of shame and anger about his father being weak and a loser and there is no admiration / understanding for his heroism.
Enji, instead of letting himself grieve and process, curses the weakness and tries to overpower it. He chooses a hero name that signals his aspiration to reach superhuman strength through sheer effort, he hides his emotions / grief behind a flashy show of power. The flaming beard apparently has a lot of symbolism. It's a mask Endeavor puts on to project strength, intimidation and eventually distance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking back to past chapters, it's interesting to see that while he trains / interacts with Touya without the flame-beard, with Shouto it is always on, and after Touya's death, Endeavor constantly hides himself behind his fire.
And in Touya's home-coming scene, there is a lot of focus on Endeavor's fire-covered eyes, how he got even more power-crazy. Touya was not wrong in that his father did abhor his weakness even if it connects back to Endeavor's own inability to face, process, accept his father's and his own weakness.
So to me, what stands out as significant in this chapter is that while his past self reminds him WHY he wanted to be strong, Endeavor switches off the flame beard. He stops pretending that he's someone he's not, he stops hiding his weakness, and I guess he's ready to let his heart fall to pieces.
Tumblr media
This is obviously not the big father-ending (yet) that we've been waiting for from Endeavor because it would be absurd if he could just punch his way out of it (after the whole High End fight showed him that he cannot). But possibly it's another step for him to truly face that fear he himself never properly faced, or to understand the heart driving his own father when he died such a "useless death" trying to save someone and failing.
Maybe, accepting his father's heroism - the heroism of someone weak - is something he needs to do before he can step up and just be a father rather than trying to project strength towards his family.
It's actually very ironic how Endeavor mentions Deku as an unattainable goal, because Deku is the person whose own origin moment is running against a villain with a backpack and no hope of victory. The ultimate heroism of the weak. And if All Might wasn't there, he and Bakugou would likely both have ended up dead just like the girl and Enji's father. But in the logic of the narrative, something so reckless and desperate is meant to be still a positive thing - because the heroism of the weak matters as long as the next person steps up and the chain is unbroken.
The entire group fighting here now is weak. Hawks is reduced to two swords and a handful of baby feathers, Jirou has a non-combat quirk and she's kind of helpless in the air, even Dark Shadow is at a disadvantage fighting in full daylight. But each of their actions matter and add up. It's not that they don't have a weakness, but they cover for each other's weaknesses.
So maybe if Endeavor accepts this truth in his own "ugly heart" and stops worrying about strength and power and being No 1, he's going to be able to look his children in the eye and just love them as they are - with that existentially terrifying knowledge that comes with being a parent; that life is fragile, and no matter how hard he "endeavors", he can't control it all through more power.
All he can do is face his weakness, his past, his sins, his grief and just "endeavor" to do what's right in the next moment.
