This Land Is Our Land: A Blue Beetle Story
Made by Jacoby Salcedo, Julio Anta, and Francesco Segala, releasing October 2024
Blue Beetle's YA graphic novel debut, will tackle contemporary issues well-known to the Latino community. Immigration and perceptions of border life and issues will be addressed, framing current events in a DC context. Contrary to the recent film, which takes place in Palmera City, Jaime will be operating in his hometown of El Paso, Texas, in a retelling of his origin story.

Mamo, by Sas Milledge
Tumblr media
⭐⭐⭐⭐
When Mamo, the witch of Haresden, died without a proper burial, the local magic went haywire: harvests are failing, the tides are rising, the fae have begun to overstep their boundaries, and Jo's attic has a new resident poltergeist! Orla, Mamo's estranged granddaughter, has returned to set matters right. But that could mean binding herself to the village for the rest of her life, the very fate she left to avoid. With Jo's help, Orla will have to find a way to save Haresden without sacrificing herself in the process.
This was an adorable graphic novel with a cute sapphic side plot. The plot is very simple, with not much more to it than what's in the summary, but I'm glad it wasn't padded with filler. This way the story was short and sweet, taking just as long as it needed and no longer. The character interactions were really the star of the show, here.
While anyone can appreciate the love story, I feel the themes of being fundamentally misunderstood by family will resonate strongest with a queer audience. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the magic in this story was a metaphor for anything, but Orla's struggle certainly had parallels.

Lenni Reviews: "Brooms" by Jasmine Walls & Teo Duvall
(Image Source) In 1930’s Mississippi, magic is common but either banned or severely restricted for people of color. Despite this, Billie Mae and Cheng Kwan introduce young Mattie and Emma broom racing in order to participate in underground broom racing to earn money to learn magic from a real school. Despite the abundance of characters, it’s easy to empathize with their struggles and hopes. The…

HEY, KIDDO
Tumblr media
[Book cover for Hey, Kiddo]. (n.d.). Retrieved March 2, 2023, from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey,_Kiddo
Hey, Kiddo by Jarrett Krosoczka is a memoir and graphic novel that chronicles Krosoczka’s childhood living with his grandparents while his frequently absent mother struggles with drug addiction. Krosoczka’s mother gave birth to him at a young age, without any help from his father, and also consistently struggles with drug use. Krosoczka’s grandparents stepped in a legally adopted him to help him grow up in a safe and nurturing environment. Still, throughout the memoir, Krosoczka learns more about his mother and even his absent father, which causes complicated feelings that he is forced to deal with. Using drawing as his outlet, Krosoczka was able to overcome his demons and create healthy relationships with those he once felt animosity towards.
Jarrett Krosoczka’s Hey, Kiddo is an incredible true story that tackles many issues that children and teens are unfortunately forced to overcome, such as abandonment, domestic drug use, anger, and resentment. Krosoczka does a fantastic job illustrating his childhood and providing a range of emotions in his writing to allow the reader to help feel what he was feeling. Krosoczka also gives pieces of advice at the end and describes that learning how to understand his mother’s addiction and his father’s reason for remaining completely absent helped him create a special relationship with both of them. Growing up, he was unable to understand why his situation was the way it was and was even embarrassed at times, but he overcame these issues. This memoir is an excellent read for everyone, especially those who struggle with the same problems. Krosoczka does a great job of giving the reader a sense of hope and ensuring that everything will work out how it is supposed to. I would give the storyline a 10/10 rating and a 10/10 rating for the illustration. Creating this memoir as a graphic novel enhances the story and the emotions felt and allows the reader to form a relationship with Krosoczka without really knowing him. While I believe this is a fantastic read, I’m not sure it would be a teen's first choice to read independently. On the other hand, if it was a class assignment, I believe teens would be surprised after reading it and realize how much they enjoyed it. All in all, this does not take away from the memoir’s story or quality.

The Infinity Particle
By Wendy Xu
In this gorgeous graphic novel by Wendy Xu, co-creator of the award-winning Mooncakes, a young inventor falls for a lifelike AI and confronts questions of freedom and autonomy. Clementine Chang moves from Earth to Mars for a new start and is lucky enough to land her dream job with Dr. Marcella Lin, an Artificial Intelligence pioneer. On her first day of work, Clem meets Dr. Lin’s assistant, a humanoid AI named Kye. Clem is no stranger to robots—she built herself a cute moth-shaped companion named SENA.
Still, there’s something about Kye that feels almost too human. When Clem and Kye begin to collaborate, their chemistry sets off sparks. The only downside? Dr. Lin is enraged by Kye’s growing independence and won’t allow him more freedom. Plus, their relationship throws into question everything Clem thought she knew about AI. After all, if Kye is sentient enough to have feelings, shouldn’t he be able to control his own actions? Where is the line between AI and human? As her past and Kye’s future weigh down on her, Clem becomes determined to help him break free—even if it means risking everything she came to Mars for.

This book meant a lot to me. It's been a long, hard year, in a series of extremely difficult years. So it was nice to read some science fiction where All This ends, not in doom, but in a better future. Reading "The end of late stage capitalism & the age of billionaires" as part of the history/world building of the story felt like a breath of fresh air. As well as seeing actual A.I. instead of the thieving aggregates we're currently subjected to.
I also related to both Clem & Kye with their respective abusive parents, and taking the step to run towards your own future and sense of self. SENA is also adorable, and I'd love to have a little friend like them.
This is my favourite of Wendy Xu's books thus far, and one I'll probably return to whenever I need a pick-me-up.

The graphic novel debut from rising star ND Stevenson, based on his beloved and critically acclaimed web comic, which Slate awarded its Cartoonist Studio Prize, calling it "a deadpan epic." Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from N.D. Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones. Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are. But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.
