This weekend
I'm prepping the collected edition of TJ AND AMAL for its third printing. It's a strange feeling. ICC offered me the chance to make any revisions I wanted and while it's tempting to clean up all the old art and things I'd do differently now than 10-15 years ago, that way lies fucking madness. So I'm just making some text and formatting corrections.
And friends, I had never done this before but going through that comic ONLY reading the text was goddamn wild

While few folks may pick up a comic solely because the lettering is good, BAD lettering can absolutely ruin a comic.
Emi Gennis did a WONDERFUL talk about lettering principles at CXC, and it's a must-watch for comic-makers learning their craft.
I can think of precious few lectures on comics stuff where I agree with every single point, but I agree with every single point on this one. I've considered making a balloon placement video, but now there's no need to, anything I might say is said here.

It’s always worth checking back on old experiments. Back in 2007, my studiomates and I were all getting frustrated with the terrible smell of our ellipse template sets. For those who don’t use them, these things always smell awful. We decided to ask the manufacturer about them.
They wrote back and we blogged about the exchange.
Well I just want to let you know that it’s been 15 years. I checked yesterday, and the templates all still smell like a big bowl of Doritos and feet.

I’m deep in the penciling mines for Seacritters which means I’m drawing a lot of stuff I find absolutely delightful but won’t have cause to share with the reading public for at least another calendar year. I DO NOT CARE FOR IT, so here is Mr. Slapdash challenging a potted plant to a duel.
(If you’re late to this party: Seacritters is a swashbuckling comic adventure series for fans of Redwall and Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s being written by Kate Milford and illustrated by me and published by Walker Books and when I finish it in eight bazillion years it’s gonna knock yer socks off. I’m posting more about it on Patreon if you like process porn and enabling a cartoonist to make a living wage.)

My submitted cover for The Call of Cthulhu comic adaptation I drew for Caliber Comics. The publisher has yet to sign off on this cover, but I am pretty proud of it so I'm showing it off anyway
