I gamify word counts.
Here, have my custom template that I actually use. Because gatekeeping resources is wack.
I sometimes write up to 4,000 words a day for my day job, and then I’ll sit down in the evening and write more.
I'm able to make this work (for me, just for me, most of the time) because I've discovered that I can trigger dopamine hits with visual cues like colors and a progress chart.
So I made this word count tracker.
It's nothing too fancy, but it's got pretty, live-updating colors, a chart that tracks my progress, I can set a goal if I have one. I keep one of these in almost every writing project folder.
It works really well for me, and it helps me when I'm feeling freaked out by a word count or a blank page.
Just Input your word count goal and your word count by day. That’s it. It’ll track your progress, color it in by weight (so satisfying), and you’ll see the graph get closer and closer to your goal.

Annual Writing Tracker
Hi Everyone! As we start the new year I have revamped the writing tracker I've been using for a few years now. Big thanks to the original maker https://ko-fi.com/katecavanaugh , and to additional help from @haztobegood!! If you would like to use it, please make sure to duplicate it before attempting to edit. There are quite a few instructions on the first page to help you navigate it, make sure to give those a glance! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1M2WfbllpErPa2bYKtP3kbE8VobLzsQc3D0XiMk7t6is/edit?usp=sharing

kristen trying to convince fabian to pursue mazey by causing a small earthquake and saying “if there’s one thing i know, when love is in the air, there should be a tiny emergency!” hits a little different when you rmr that her and tracker’s first meeting was at the black pit bar and their first kiss was followed immediately by an undead brawl

it is all chaos and entropy. the thing is that the chaos and entropy make it beautiful and lovely.
yes, it's true that nature and the universe are uncaring and unspecific, and that is terrifying. i have lived through some of the unfairness - i got born like this, with my body caving into itself, with this ironic love of dance when i sometimes can't stand up for longer than 15 minutes. i am a poet with hands that are slowly shutting down - i can't hold a pen some days. recently i found a dead bird on our front porch. she had no visible injuries. she had just died, the way things die sometimes.
it is also true that nature and the universe are uncaring and unspecific, and that is wonderful. the sheer happenstance that makes rain turn into a rainbow. the impossible coincidence of finding your best friend. i have made so many mistakes and i have let myself down and i have harmed other people by accident. nature moves anyway. on the worst day of my life she delivers me an orange juice sunset, as if she is saying try again tomorrow.
how vast and unknowing the universe! how small we are! isn't that lovely. the universe has given us flowers and harp strings and the shape of clouds. how massive our lives are in comparison to a grasshopper. the world so bright, still undiscovered. even after 30 years of being on this earth, i learned about a new type of animal today: the dhole.
chance echoing in my life like a harmony between two people talking. do you think you and i, living in different worlds but connected through the internet - do you think we've ever seen the same butterfly? they migrate thousands of miles. it's possible, right?
how beautiful the ways we fill the vastness of space. i love that when large amounts of people are applauding in a room, they all start clapping at the same time. i love that the ocean reminds us of our mother's heartbeat. i love that out of all the colors, chlorophyll chose green. i love the coincidences. i love the places where science says i don't know, but it just happens.
"the universe doesn't care about you!" oh, i know. that's okay. i care about the universe. i will put my big stupid heart out into it and watch the universe feast on it. it is not painful. it is strange - the more love you pour into the unfeeling world, the more it feels the world loves you in return. i know it's confirmation bias. i think i'm okay if my proof of kindness is just my own body and my own spirit.
i buried the bird from our porch deep in the woods. that same day, an old friend reaches out to me and says i miss you. wherever you go, no matter how bad it gets - you try to do good.
#writeblr#warm up#i can't write rn but i have SO much words in here bc im reading the chorus of dragons books#(just started book 4)#and this woman's writing is just LIVING in my brain. let me out!!!#(i read roughly like 2-4 books a week usually bc i go on long walks with my dog but when a book is REALLY good like. it eats my life. )#anyway ...... so like here's a story that idk i've tried to explain to other people as being wild#but maybe im the only one who thinks it is wild???#so i play pokemon go (i just started in jan) bc i love pokemon and as i have mentioned i walk goblin for like an hour in the morning#and i don't like a lot of fitness trackers due to the fact it makes me .sad. but i also wanted the little digital rewards. enter pokemon go#anyway so they make you make friends to complete quests. so i used a reddit thread. i do not usually use reddit. i don't have an acct#i lurked. i just googled like ''pokemon go reddit '' and randomly added a bunch of numbers#i was on that page for all of 15 minutes. there are THOUSANDS of responses on that page.#here's what's wild: in that group of people. even though i am not on reddit and it was one random event once#it turns out one of those people lives in the town i live in. or at least very close. i only know this because#when we send each other gifts. it's from the same freaking area.#i can't ask them to meet up bc pokemon go doesn't have a messaging app lol but like . what are the fucking chances that#a random person posts in a random reddit thread and HAPPENS to get added by someone ELSE from their SAME TOWN#who by pure fucking CHANCE is ALSO playing pokemon go and looking for friends#i googled it there's only 42000 people in my broad region. the .......... smallness ! of the world!!!

What motivates you to write?
Tumblr media
Honestly so many things. Kudos, comments, and the thought that I may eventually be published. But the most accessible motivation I have right now is my Excel spreadsheet. I've tried the tracking apps and add-ons before, but I can't be as consistent as the apps want me to be, so I end up with large sections left blank. With my own spreadsheet, I can delete the void data from days I didn't write anything, leaving us with the line graph above.
I input all the information, and usually work out the blue line values by getting a word count for my entire document, and subtracting the value I last inputted. It's ridiculously simple and I would recommend it to everyone tbh. You can do it by one-shot word count (as I've done here), by single chapter, multi-chapter, series, or any combination really.
Unfortunately, my stats don't have time spent represented in the graphs yet. I'm tempted to include it with my next set of stats though, as I usually redraft and edit my fics a bit before I do anything with them. For example, the count in the middle of about 100 words actually took a good hour or so, but the count is lower because I spent it deleting and rephrasing stuff.
But yeah. My motivation to do anything right now is statistics and graphs, because food, reward, and sleep no longer work :') Does anyone else do this? I feel like it's pretty useful but IDK how widely used this is haha

I saw your DD graph asking for other ideas, so... if you still have any desire to do further Dracula graphs I'd be curious to see how the word count per character breaks down (not how much they speak but how much they write. Adding all their diary entries together, etc.). Obviously Mina wins by default from having typed up the whole novel but outside of that detail, how much did each person author?
Thank you so much for this ask! What an interesting data set this one is! Lots of unexpected information.
So first off, if you just want to visualize the author breakdown, ta-dahhhh!
Tumblr media
Seward was staunchly in the lead, talking his head off and burning through those wax recording drums like no ones business. Poor Mina for having to transcribe it all. In total his words made up 39.3% of Dracula. Nearly 40%!
Seward unsurprisingly had the most individual entries overall at 47, and had the longest streak for being the narrator in an entry at 10 days (09/02 - 09/11) with Mina following right behind at 9 days (08/10 - 08/19)
Mina surprisingly was 3rd overall both in word count and number of entries. She wasn't even in the top 3 for most words in a day which is as follows.
1 - Seward October 3rd - 9942 words
2 - Seward September 29th - 7206 words
3 - Jonathan October 3rd - 5944 words
Van Helsing only had 9 entries total but still came in number 4 for word count, in front of Lucy. It's interesting to note that the amount a person writes doesn't correlate to the amount of time they are being written about/appear. Which is why Arthur and Quincey don't even beat out the newspaper clippings for words, lol.
There are lots of authors we only hear from a single time, like Sister Agatha. So I've decided to make a small fry pie as well. (Authors under ~500 words)
Tumblr media
The captain of the Demeter and Van Helsing both had more days written than Lucy! Though I didn't break up number of entries, like when the log of the Demeter had 3 or 4 on one day or Lucy wrote a letter and in her diary.
If there is any data I haven't presented here that you're interested in feel free to tag me or shoot me an ask like this lovely person did!

personal headcannon that jawbone and tracker have like dog allergies (not deadly but think like severe lactose intolerance type reactions) and like people who are lactose intolerant, they will still eat things that hurt them cuz it tastes good which leads me too:
there is a constant battle between jawbone, tracker, and their respective partners over whether they are allowed to have hot chocolate or not.
jawbone: i should be allowed to eat whatever i want. i am a grown man!
sandra lynn (actively confiscating the cocoa he just brewed and replacing it with tea): yes! a grown man trying to poison himself for the sake of hot chocolate.
kristen and sandra lynn are unlikely allies in the war against their partners need for a sweet drink that will ruin their stomachs. sandra lynn is great at hiding the hot chocolate mix where they can’t find it and kristen has spilled every drink that she’s ever looked at so if they do it gets destroyed.
just. shenanigans ya know

(bleeding slightly from the eyes but with a sincerely cheerful smile on my face) HELLO fellow NaNoWriMo people! I was going to spend October writing and planning so I could hit the ground running November 1 and finally finish the first draft of the project I started last year...
...but instead I have spent 100% of my free hours the past few weeks on: crafting a spreadsheet.
a beautiful, beautiful spreadsheet for NaNoWriMo participants. ("it's for NaNo," I told myself over and over as the hours crept by; "IT COUNTS AS PREPARING. IT'S FOR NANO.")
the spreadsheet is simple, yet elegant. intuitive, yet complex. informative, yet not too heavy on the data. a soothing periwinkle shade greets you upon opening it, followed by an energizing indigo.
the spreadsheet says: "shh. come here. you will reach your NaNoWriMo goal and you will do so beautifully. no don't look at the hidden row; it contains Math. look at your word document. and then come back here and update me and see how my charts spring to life for you, my brave writer."
and then it kisses you on the forehead and/or mouth.
all for the low low price of $4.99!!! and PLEASE can 3 to 5 people kindly purchase it so I can justify to myself how I have written (checks my own copy of this spreadsheet) less than 2,000 words this month when I was supposed to have written (checks spreadsheet again) at leaset 3,000 by now. IT'S FOR NANO.
Tumblr media
^this is her btw. if you even care. my lover. my darling. my spreadsheet. i had to use exclamation points due to the Etsy of it all but please know that this spreadsheet was crafted by a true tumblrina who has been in the posting mines since 2010. thank you. goodnight.
