Blood flecks off of Kristen’s bracelets, the charms that she and the other Bad Kids had picked out one day, stringing beads and thread together to create friendship bracelets. 

There’s blood on her bracelets, blood staining the colors and drying on her skin. She shakes her wrists aimlessly, trying to get the blood off but it’s dried, it’s there, it’s not her blood it’s Buddy’s. 

Her friends are asleep on the train. Fig and Gorgug are fast asleep, leaning on each other in the seats across from her. Fabian is stretched across a row of seats, snoring softly. 

Adaine sits next to her, her eyes unfocused. Kristen can’t tell if she’s trancing or not, but she doesn’t want to disturb Adaine if she is. 

Fig had texted Sandra Lynn that they won the Last Stand and that they were coming home. She didn’t say anything other than that, the six of them figured they should tell Jawbone and Sandra Lynn in person. 

Cool hands slip into hers and Kristen jolts, looking over to meet Adaine’s eyes. 

“I could feel you thinking.” Adaine whispers. Her eyes flick down to Kristen’s bracelets and she casts Prestidigitation, the blood disappearing as quickly as it appeared. 

Her bracelets look good as new, as she jangles them once to make sure they’re back to normal, it feels like shackles removed and she drops onto Adaine’s shoulder, like strings cut all the energy keeping her up since six yesterday morning gone. 

Adaine shifts, moving her arm to wrap around Kristen, stroking up and down her arm, casting Prestidigitation, removing more of the blood as she starts to sing softly, an old Elven lullaby that Kristen remembered hearing Aelwyn singing on the trip back from the Nightmare Forest, all of them exhausted and dirty, piled on top of each other in Tracker’s Moon Haven. She wondered how Tracker was, after they all left Falinell. Kristen hasn’t texted, but she wants to. She doesn’t want to bother Tracker, though, and if another cleric dies because of her- 

Kristen isn’t alone, but sometimes she feels alone, even with Adaine’s arm around her shoulder and her face in the crook of Adaine’s neck. 

Cassandra? I don’t know if you can hear me, but I wanted to let you know that we’re okay, and we’re trying to help you. We’re going to help you, and your wife, and everything will be okay, because it has to be. 

Kristen’s eyes close as Adaine continues to sing, the occasional movement of the train sending her in and out of sleep until Riz wakes them all up an hour later as they reach their stop, pulling out files from his briefcase and spreading them out on the deserted train station. Kristen’s paying attention, but just barely, the cold of her energy drink seeping into her fingers and spreading deeper. She yawns and rests her head on Gorgug’s shoulder, content to sit back and let Adaine and Riz talk it out. 

Adaine’s lullaby plays in her head and she struggles to keep her eyes open, the sky turning from a dark blue to purple as the sun rises.

People who think Tracker and Kristen should be endgame/are soulmates genuinely fascinates me. I don't mean that as some sort of shipper-hate or something, but I mean it as I know them. I used to be in that relationship. My first relationship after coming out as lesbian was exactly the same. We started dating in high school and stayed together for a few years. We were attached at the hip and one of us grandfathered in the other into their friendship group. One of us had some more experience as a dyke. Even how we interacted with each other was about as similar as it could be to Tracker and Kristen. We broke up amicably and through a lot of tears, promising each other to stay close friends. One of us got a summer depression over it and one of us became very productive over it. We didn't speak for months despite the promise and then when we saw each other again it was some weird parasocial/psychosexual dynamic none of us would recognise. We had a mutual friend who eventually chose a side. One of us got into a relationship soon thereafter and brought it up to the other in the most toxic imaginable way. We still cared about each other like crazy. That first insane lesbian relationship you're in is gonna set its mark forever and you're supposed to grow from it. Ally knew exactly what the vibe with Kristen and Tracker was because this is such a universal experience for young dykes. can't believe im still not done yapping but lets talk about tracker again because at first i was so genuinely upset with how unkind she was being, she completely misunderstood kristen and assumed the worst of what she was saying even when kristen tried to explain to her that she was asking earnestly and not passive aggressively, she dismissed that. however, as soon as she was shown kindness and she broke down? i immediately recognized her behaviour. you know when someone has been dependent on themself their whole life? you know how they get very defensive about their life decisions? tracker was kicked out of her home as kid, was probably homeless for a while, contracted lycanthropy very young, went to live with her (drug dealer at the time) uncle who didn't have much time for her with all his adventures and shenanigans, she was probably left home alone alot, she stopped going to school which means she probably mostly hung out with people older than her, tracker is a girl that had to grow up way too fast, she had to make her own life decisions and hope that by some miracle they were the right ones, and i bet she hated that dismissive look that adults give children whenever they make a decision that they dont agree with, i bet there were alot of times where she had to fight for her spot in life, to be taken seriously, and when she finally reached the top, when she finally did something that, to everyone, seemed like a good decision? her girl.. no. her ex girlfriend, comes around, looks at all of it, and questions that decision that she worked so hard to make, and thats tough, so she had to defend it with all her might, she got nasty and mean out of fear, and kristen, like she has always been, was the water that softened trackers' rough edges, she put a hand on her shoulder and assured her that: no i'm not saying you made a bad decision im asking if your heart is still in it...and her words are full of love and worry, worry for tracker, which is a rarity for the wolf girl that had to grow up way too soon.
