Growing up
I’d always have to sleep with a night light
But it had to stay in the hall
No direct light or it was too bright
I couldn’t sleep in complete darkness
It was too unnerving
Maybe just for a little girl
Unsure what laid beyond her bed
But even as an adult
I don’t know what’s out there
What demons try to reach me at night
Or what assassins the world has trained to come after me
I leave the nightlight plugged in in the hallway
If it’s ever off I’ll know
But I never turn it off
If I lay awake at night at least I can see who stands in the doorway when my thoughts haunt me
But in complete darkness I can’t see them
And I’d like to see the face of my destroyer before they destroy me
I always sleep with the night light on
Just so I can see what the world holds for me in my weakest hour
When I’m not at my best and when I’m stripped from my bearings on my knees begging for a way out
I scream till my throats raw and I cough up blood but no one ever comes
I’m on my own
I always was
But I’m alone with my nightlight
And the light makes it less dark
Even when my eyes are shut and the blankets are pulled over my head
My knuckles white and my hands shaking
Even with the nightlight I started learning
It’s not who that will stand in my doorway ready to best me
It’ll be the what that stands there, the next thing to knock me to my knees
I’m so tired of fighting but I promised to never give up
No matter how many knives the world throws at me I want to see it’s beauty
It’s out there somewhere under the coal and the fire
Under the hatred and the lies
Under all that darkness there is beauty
There is light
I always sleep with a nightlight on
So it can remind me what I’m living for
I’ll find more one day
But for now I have my own light to begin my journey

UNFUCKWITABLE: My confidence didn't come from what people call "concern trolling." A bunch of friends, family members and naysayers reminding me that I'm fat didn't make me the person that I am today. I almost lost EVERYTHING before I found my happy. And the crazy part is that it was here side eyeing me the entire time. My heart told me I was beautiful and strong. Even my reflection would give me two snaps of approval but people failed me every time. I was too fat, now not fat enough to some to have this conversation and even accused of pretending to have a disability to cover up the mere fact that I'm fat. Honey please -- I know I'm fat (and spare me the "you're not as fat as me" and "don't talk about yourself that way" comments.) For the Chicago marathon, I'll be running my 5'3 1/2, 236 lbs muscular leg, gym day arms and three pack loose gut ass across the finish line. Please continue trying to educate me on my own body. Continue reminding me that you can walk faster than I can run. Remind me about my unhealthy eating habits any time I pick up a piece of carb. And I'll keep showing you this 48 inch muscular ass with stretch marks to kiss after I'm done with these 26.2 miles. Keep watching. I'll keep entertaining you with my success. A Slow Death
Today i woke up at 3 am. Nothing describes a lonely heart more than someone who wants to sit in bed and stare into oblivion trying to figure out where I am supposed to be and where I am supposed to go from here. I feel as if I have a boulder pressing down on my chest, slowly crushing me with the weight of my own anxiety and depression, while I lay there and try to lift it's constant gravity off of me with no end in sight.
Today I looked at Instagram, it felt like I was scared to scroll, anxiety rushed over me as if I was going to see something I didn't want too; then i realized, i am afraid to see her, one quarter inch swipe up and I could see her smile. The problem was not that I'd see her, it's that when I see her, her smile will not be because of me, her joy won't be because I helped her achieve it. She is my depression, she is my anxiety. If it was possible to forget her I don't think I would be able to do it. It hurts me so much but in the end what is life but a bunch of memories; but why does life have to be a bunch of memories and why do they have to be only the ones that cause my head to spin, my heart to ache, my chest to crush and my eyes to water.
Why can I not remember the last time I was happy? Why can I not remember the last time I smiled? What is the point in living my life if all I can remember are the opposites of bliss.
Why am I still here; and why do I need to stay. P.S I am broken

(Re)Finding Freedom
I began running in 2014... or rather began running seriously. Before then, running had just been something I had to grit my teeth and do every month for a fitness test in order to stay on my university’s varsity sailing team. Going into my senior year in undergrad, I started to take it more seriously. My initial mentality was, “well, if I just keep running, this whole business will be over faster.” Slowly but surely I got stronger and could run farther and run faster and I actively began enjoying the activity, which is good because when I ultimately quit the sailing team to focus on trying to graduate on time while trying to balance inevitable drama that comes from living with 5 other girls, I needed the outlet. 
I ran my first 5k road race in November of that year. A local turkey trot to support the Rec center in my home town. It was a frigged morning, frost on the ground, and people bundled head to toe. In spite of the cold, I managed to PR my 5K time (a PR time I still have yet to beat, though I am getting closer every day). I worked hard to maintain my running performance over the winter, in spite of Snowmaggedon in New England, and the polar vortex temperatures. I continued to watch my distance and speed increase on the treadmill until it was nice enough to run outside again.
At the height of my running, I could just go on for miles. I would go to my local state forest and intentionally get lost, running 8 or more miles in one go. At the behest of my running friends, I signed up for my second road race, a 5 miler on the 4th of July. It was a blast, and running with friends made it so beyond fun.... and then everything unraveled.
 It began with feeling lethargic and tired every day, which, at the time I attributed to the excessive celebrating that comes with the summer season. Then I began to notice other things. When propping myself up on my elbows, my fingers would begin to tingle and fall asleep, my body and especially joints felt stiff and swollen, I’d come home from coaching sailing and have heat rash every day. I would try to run and could barely make it a mile before I was too exhausted and my knees too swollen to continue. Soon, every day I felt like my body was covered in pins and needles because the swelling was causing my nerves to go off like fireworks.
After over a month of doctors visits, tests, and agonizing frustration, I was finally given an answer to what was happening to me. “I believe you have Lupus,” the rheumatologist I’d been referred to said it so calmly, but I guess that’s what they’re trained to do. Lupus... but didn’t Dr. House say, “it’s never Lupus?” Two months of oral steroids and a new regimen of immunosuppressents finally got my flare to stop getting worse. I was told to minimize my exposure to the sun, do easy non-impact exercise, and that, “we will go from there when you’re feeling better.”
It took me 3 years to get back to running. Partially due to my disease, and partially due to time management. (Who really has time to exercise in Grad School anyways?) I ballooned in Grad School, gained 30lbs, was living a sedentary lifestyle, but I finally had control over my disease. When I moved back home to start work full time I had been able to cut my flares down to less than 3 a year. 
This new control over my disease gave me the will power to take control over my weight and my life. With the help of a weight-loss program, I was able to lose the weight in a healthy way during the first 4 months of 2018 and I finally got the courage up to begin running again. Muscle memory is such a wonderful thing, and running again just felt so right and so natural. I was determined to never let go of this feeling ever again.
To maintain my motivation, I signed up for a trail running 5k in June of this year. I was beyond nervous. It had been so long since I raced, and my pace was (and still is) nowhere near where it was in 2014/2015. Even so, I committed, I ran the race, I beat the average pace, got second in my age group, and cried when I crossed the finish line.
Don’t call it a comeback. I just needed a hiatus, to get my disease under control, get my life together, and regain the confidence I once had every time I ran. I have since signed up for 6 more races this summer. I will be tackling my first half-marathon, a trail running race with 2,200 ft of vertical gain. And that has nothing on the 11-miler I plan to tackle this weekend which boasts 3,400 ft of vertical and summits Jay Peak in Vermont. This weekend’s 11-mile will be the farthest distance I’ve ever run, and farther than I ever thought would be possible for me, but 5 days out from it, I’m not worried. I know I’ll finish, and I’ll get there when I get there. It will be hard, and it will test me, but I finally know now, that I can, and I always could, because I’ve (re)found the freedom that running brings, and I’m never letting go of that again.

Honey it's too hot for clothing today... but I suppose laws and stuff means I cannot walk around nude unless it's for art. Nevertheless, training for the Ironman 70.3 and Javelina Jundred 100K is going great thus far. I have a total of 14.5 miles of cycling in and loads of stair training. I did a bit of calisthenics in the park but haven't touched my run yet. If I miss it, I'm not too worried. Back to back long run on the schedule for the weekend will keep me honest. I'm excited about talking to my running coach... yes, I have one now! I hears she's a sweetheart but I know she's going to kick my ass and make me a better athlete.
