sometimes I think about that guy on amazon who reviewed pride and prejudice and did an entire angry, weirdly math focused rant about how awful darcy is and then ends it all with "I could carve a better man out of a banana"

From what I can see, all the commentary on the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie thinks this story is trying to answer its philosopical questions, and completely overlooking the fact that all the answers these characters find are the wrong ones. The right answer is in The Hunger Games and Catching Fire and Mockingjay. You can tell because the main character of this story is the villain in the other ones.

figured i'd do this again..bit early i guess..
#to cheer me up.. i feel bad atm.. these things don't even make me feel very good tho bc i'm such a narrative/sketch-based artist..#but Proper Beautiful Finished Pieces are what grab attention and look good at the end of the year all neatly lined up lol.....#so looking at a “yearly review” where i can only choose 'the best image of the month' (??) is like...What have i even been doing...#i did a month by month look back on twt for myself instead..but even that doesn't express the quantity of comic-based stuff..#that i do put a lot of time/heart into..but alas i feel bad bringing even them back..RTing/reblogging my own art simply feels bad lol..#AND WHY IS IT ALL B&W...trying to accept that i LIKE doing that and sketching and scribbling..not like i'm trying to like..Get Artist Job..#this year was so profoundly lonely at times bc i spent all my time drawing instead of socialising and trying to find friends....#please please please have achieved more of your dreams in the future so you can look back at 2023 and think..#It was good that happened so that it got me further to the future. Or whatever i guess.....................#regardless i did have a great amount of fun drawing and improving this year and dwelling deeply & heavily on witch hat atelier.#art-wise and emotionally....march july & september were the best months i think..AUGUST WAS SO WEIRD SUMMER IS SO EVIL ALWAYS.#thank you very much if you are reading this for enjoying & leaving nice tags & such like <3 i've realised how fulfilling that is to receive#really keeps me posting stuff here instead of keeping it all to myself in my head#i wish everyone in this world could have a safe and happy end of year. i wish living in this world were easier

i think the biggest difference between babel and the secret history is the notion of telling versus showing.
richard tells us over and over again about the beauty of the hampden college campus, about the lovely days spent at francis’ house, about how beauty is terror, about the sense of belonging he found in his classics class. but the story explicitly shows us the reality is not what richard preaches. they killed their friend, they justified it in the name of hellenism, they were horrible to each other, they all lost their minds. there’s layers to the storytelling and an incongruous, inverse relationship between the true story and its teller.
babel is exceptionally well-researched and the story is as comforting as it is harrowing and its deffo a book society needs. but the story doesn’t actually show us anything that it doesn’t explicitly reiterate through its dialogue and actions again and again. robin thinks to himself that the british empire is evil (true) and then we immediately see an example of how the british empire is evil. the story spells itself out to the reader as history spells itself out to robin. it’s thematically exquisite but the narrative style is uninteresting.

I saw this post and it reminded me of the time I was looking for a review of a cute little cookbook I’d seen based on a book series, and this reviewer went through to make and review some of the recipes.
For some reason, she chose a bunch that used ingredients she didn’t like.  And she rated those recipes poorly. Because of how it tasted like the thing she didn’t like.
She did pick one recipe she was excited about, though. Only she didn’t bother to include all the ingredients. And then rated it poorly because it tasted really bad and dry and idk, maybe I did something wrong, the recipe wanted three cups of dried fruit and I only used a cup of raisins, anyway, terrible bread and would not make again.
So, if you ever get a comment on your fanfic, that amounts to, ‘why is this thing in here, it’s terrible, ew, like I know you tagged it but it’s still gross and I hate that I read it, ew,’ just know it’s really, really, really not you.
There will always be people out there that want to punch themselves in the face so they can wonder why their nose hurts.

Someone’s gotta do a critical study of those TikTok-type point of view videos of, you know, getting bullied by a cool girl when you were in sixth grade, or having your mother-in-law be rude to you, or getting the brush-off after paying a visit your divorced dad wasn’t expecting (not a hypothetical, had this just inexplicably pop up on my YouTube Recommended), I think they started out as observational comedy skits with the occasional cathartic edge and resonated because so many people relate to them, but at what point are they an exercise in deliberately putting yourself in a bad mood (as opposed to accidentally putting yourself in a bad mood, which is the typical practice of social media)? And at what point beyond that are they just training videos teaching you how to hate more types of people and bundle loaded assumptions about them into your interactions, should you encounter them in real life? Because we’re well past that point, baby!

i might end up watching that one certain series about hell because i want to give my honest opinion on how it turned out as a former fan, but my judgement of 2 minute opening alone is that i really dislike the way they went about the exposition,,, it's kinda drawn out and presented in an uninteresting way, which sucks cuz a few small changes could make it way better - instead of having the protag just read out what she probably already knows, why not have it be a flashback of her father/mother reading it to her and then cut to present day ,,, and also loredumping right off the bat is an easy way to make things boring, pls quicken the pace or leave stuff to the imagination that's a better hook imo. also while i'm not a christian (ex-pentecostal christian, agonistic) and i'm aware that it might be a setup showing how lucifer is maybe lying to/twisting the original story that he tells his subjects, or a "what if"/converging of different forms of christianity/general mythology, the incorrect theology made my ass itch 😭😭😭😭 PLS read the bible or at least be aware of the main points of the teachings before you write a show about any religion

dont get me wrong i am more excited for this atla remake and the inevitable renaissance part 2 than i have ever been for anything in my life. however im also terrified of what changes this is going to bring to the fandom. Obviously the 2020 renaissance brought a lot of new and good things (zukka, a ton of amazing fics, etc). But more people joining the fandom means new people joining ao3 and interacting with fics and authors and artists too. Even in the few years that i've been active in fandom i've noticed a dramatic shift in how people interact with artists and authors especially. And I can't see this not getting worse as more people whose main social media experiences include tik tok and instagram coming to ao3 and tumblr. Like these people are used to content creators who revolve their content around what their audience wants because its their job, and I know this isnt going to translate well to the culture around ao3 writers especially when unconsolidated comments and 'advise' is already a problem for a ton of authors. And for people who dont understand that fics and fanart are supposed be transactional in the sense that you need to leave comments and kudos and reblog stuff when they're used to simply liking something *maybe* being enough. Idk whats going on with other fandoms, but I do know that these things have been an ongoing issue for the atla fandom and like I said, I can't imagine having another 'renaissance' and this stuff not getting worse.

Honestly just reading the reviews for the JS Elektra retelling left me with my head in my hands. Big Vito Corleone energy. Look what they did to my girl (except pls don't)
Tumblr media
My worst nightmare besides the people who write bad "feminist" myth retellings are the people who read greek myths as if they are a pg rated movie with characters you either like or dislike and the skeleton of a plot with the narrarive depth of a puddle. Supporting women's wrongs is a fun hobby that I myself as a lesbian often partake in but if you read the oresteia or any derivative of the oresteia with only the mindset of stanning clytemnestra or electra and completely disregard the complexities of this story which is about the moral degradation of revenge and blood feuds and the necessity of replacing those things with a fair court of law so shit stops going off the rails (and disregard the motivating factors of FATE and GODS which are inescapable in GREEK TRAGEDY i.e. agamemnon HAD to kill iphigenia and clytemnestra HAD to avenge her and electra and orestes HAD to avenge their father which is all motivation enough even without electra's further motivation of her mother and stepfather literally abusing her so of COURSE she aligned herself with the fantasy of the only parent she felt truly loved her) then I don't know what to say other than I think you're an idiot. And if you cannot write these complex characters that were so fully human and well-done in their original conception hundreds of years ago in a way for your audience to understand and sympathize with them at least as much as aeschylus' audience did, again, centuries ago, then you're a bad writer.

i hate the argument against one piece that’s like “a good show shouldn’t need 1,000+ episodes to get good”. you’re gonna make me rip my skin off. why the fuck would one piece fans waste 25 years of their life waiting to “get to the good part”? one piece isn’t 1,000 episodes because it needs to time to get good, it’s 1,000 episodes because it’s simply a long story: it’s a journey, an adventure.
in the same breath, one of the most fantastic things about op being 1,000 episodes is that, in all that time, it hasn’t run itself into the ground. it just continues to get better and better.
