Fire Emblem: Three Houses Thoughts

As someone who has always enjoyed JPRGs (thanks FFX) I kind of went into FETH knowing I would probably enjoy it. It’s character driven! It has different classes for each character! You can romance a character of your choice! There are goddesses, ultimate weapons, dragons, and a magic system! How could I not like this game?

The thing about FETH is it didn’t really throw any twists or turns that I couldn’t have predicted my way but the conclusions were still satisfying. The story was good but not in a ‘woah, change my life’ way. It did its job but its not FFVII or Tales of Bersera good in my eyes. No. It’s the characters and their individual stories that kept me playing.

I played Verdant Wind btw so there will probably be some spoilers for this route in my notes below.

You can’t really speak about Verdant Wind without first mentioning Claude. He’s the House’s Lord and the person you chose to align with at the start of the game. I chose The Golden Deer because of Claude. I’m not ashamed to admit it. I spoke to all the students, liked the look of some of them, felt meh about others, but when it came down to the choice I had to go with my gut feeling- this guy feels down to earth compared to the other two. I feel like he would be a laugh to hang out with. Plus he’s pretty.

I wasn’t wrong. Claude speaks to others as if they are his equal... because they are to him, and part of that also means that he isn’t afraid to make fun of his classmates or even his rival houses. Claude is top bants, and of course he remains pretty up to the point of the time skip- where he looks straight up handsome. Golden Boy indeed.

But my favorite thing about Claude- and the rest of the characters really- is that what you first see isn’t what is really going on. Claude might speak causally with people but he is extremely mistrustful of people at the beginning of the game. He keeps all his cards close to his chest under the pretence of being a ‘schemer’ but while he does have a sharp mind the real reason for this is he doesn’t trust others to take him and his goals seriously. He’s been treated as an outsider his whole life. Been discriminated against. Moved from pillar to post at the will of the nobles and seen discrimination happening from the other side as a result of this. Which is why his route is perfect for him. In between Edelgard, Rhea, and Dimitri, Claude is the third party, trying to make the best of a situation and struggling to see both sides. He wants to gather all the information he can because he would hate to have a wrong opinion due to trusting the biased opinions of others. He finds the truth for himself.

But Claude doesn’t stay that way. Yes, his goal from the beginning has been to tear down the wall separating Fodlan from the outside world but.... ironically he had to tear down the wall within himself that was separating him from others as well. Claude at the end of the game is a very different person to the Claude at the beginning. He is open to Lorenz and Hilda’s suggestions, willing to share his plans with Byleth and others, up to the point where he reveals his ultimate goal to the others and they stand by him. Nobles, commoners, Crestbearers and Crestless. Claude truly becomes a leader in that scene. He inspires in a way all leaders should and leads by example.

And it’s not just Claude...it’s all of them: Hilda, Lorenz, Leonie, Lysithea, Ignatz, Rapheal and Marianne all develop over the course of the story (especially if you do their Supports) and their development feeds into both Claude’s and Verdant Wind’s story.

Let me talk about Marianne for a second. I honestly didn’t think much of her to start with- oh here’s another ‘I’m so sorry’ fragile girl- I thought- I’m sure she’ll stay exactly the same, the way they always do.

Nope. Marianne is a mess. She’s a severely depressed, suicidal, living from day to day, barely taking care of herself, mess. I like that the game highlights this as her being utterly unhealthy. It’s not edgy goth girl, or cute shy girl, it’s Marianne being a danger to herself. The game writes her despair as being rooted in her Crest (the cursed Crest of the Beast) but it is ridiculously easy to read this Crest as a metaphor for Mental Illness. She’s told to stay away from others because of it because she might hurt them. Her father suffered from it before her and it was passed down to her. If people knew the nature of her Crest they would shun her as something dangerous and untrustworthy. And lastly, it is achingly clear how much she wants to be freed of it... even if that freedom costs her life. I’m reading it as a mental illness metaphor and I’m sticking with it.

But its her supports that bring her back to life. The people around her speak to her in various ways befitting their character (I like this too) and each one highlights something different that they see in her that is admirable and good. Rapheal admires her affinity with animals. Lorenz admires her quiet nature. Ignatz recognises how easy it is to appreciate the small things when with her. Claude recognises her strength in being different. Etc. etc. None of these things cure her but by being around people and seeing that they don’t reject her but accept her instead her shell begins to crack. Maybe it doesn’t have to be this way, Marianne begins to think. Maybe there are small parts of myself that are not only tolerable but... wanted in others. Maybe I don’t have to apologise for my existence.

It’s hard to say when Marianne truly turns a leaf because much like real life, change doesn’t happen in one moment, but it’s important to recognise that she does change. She still has the Crest at the end of the story (read Mental Illness) but she noticeably is able to speak her mind without apologising, able to offer her help rather than shying away, and most importantly able to laugh. It’s amazing how vocal Marianne is after the time-skip. She’s still Marianne but a healthier person. And I love her for it.

I won’t go over the other characters as I’ve spoken plenty about my two faves but I do love them all. Yes, even Sylvain. Can’t agree with his methods but I do understand and empathise with his reasons. And people are often like that.

Going off characters and into other things:

Gameplay-

I liked it but made the mistake of choosing Normal. It was ridiculously easy by the mid-way point. I would defo play on Hard in future games. However I love the strategy of choosing who fights who, when to draw someone back, when to use Gambits etc. Also love the class system. Pegasus Knights go brrrrrrrr.

Music-

This is a ‘it does its job’ for me. Nothing really stood out asides the final boss theme. But it didn’t annoy me or get bland so there’s that!

Monastery Life-

Pre Timeskip- Was fun. I liked trying to recruit students and finding lost items and doing all the support raising stuff. It was a nice break from battles.

Post Timeskip- Eh. Not enough students around to justify it tbh. It didn’t bore me but I did find myself wanting to go back to battles, story, or supports.

Verdant Wind story- I like this route for its lore and for how it mirrors Claude’s character. I did not like last minute villain even if I liked his theme. I was kind of surprised Sothis never came back?? Killing the students I didn’t recruit was fucking cruel. Have no idea what happened to Dedue. Maybe he went to the Bahamas for a long holiday after losing out to the kill.

I want to play the other routes to understand Edelgard/Dimitri/Rhea’s viewpoints but I do feel like VW is a complete story in itself. You don’t need anything else but Claude really. Why get messed up in politics and Crest shit when you can try to end racism, right? Who the fuck cares about that other stuff.

Anyway in conclusion this game to me succeeds for two things- compelling character development and compelling character relationships. I’m kind of astounded tbh that the writers wrote so many characters and yet made them all compelling in their own ways.

I bought a Golden Deer shirt because I am so invested in these characters so they’ve got to be good.

@lochnessies I didn’t want to reblog your post since it was long but if you don’t mind me adding my 2 cts to the Empire and your Empire essay

honestly i’m so glad i’m not the only one who nerded about the empire

I’m totally on board with your assertion about Agarthans and the Empire, the agarthans are the one who are the masterminds behind everything wrong happening in Fodlan (Nemesis 1 to Nemesis 2) and how the Empire who started good ended up being the decadent place we’re told about in-game that disappears in 75% of the endings.

However, I have several nitpicks or additions to make.

From the interview, apparently, humans already got their hand on “relics” before Nemesis pulled his stunt. Nemesis wanted to most powerful weapon available, so he ended up tearing Sothis, the leader of the nabateans, apart.

In the fake Church-approved story, Nemesis was king of the Liberation because he got rid of invaders coming from the North. We actually don’t know why the guy styled himself as “King of Liberation”, he apparently wanted to get rid of “liars” in his info blurb in VW, but then in the same route, when Billy fights against Maurice, Maurice asks if Billy’s come to “liberate” him... From this, I’m assuming Maurice, a former Elite, thinks “Liberation” is some sort of euphemism for death or a merciful death, idk. Bar Edel’s story, there is no real clues in game, or even outside, that Nemesis wanted to get rid of “divine beings”. I personally think he wanted to be the strongest so if lizards had to die for this then so be it, but bar that? I have no ideas about his own, personal motivations (save for “Thales’n’pals asked me to do it and they seemed so nice so I did it”).

Wilhelm Paul Hresvelg being one of Nemesis’s men who was lured away by Seiros and her dragon bros is a take that is very prevalent in the fandom, but has no basis in the game.

The Adrestian Empire officially existed in 0 when Seiros crowned the guy, but Enbarr was chosen as its capital because it was the largest city. The War of Heroes “properly” started 3 decades later as Wilhelm wanted to unify the continent.

Lycaon I’s death heralds the end of the war, meaning Wilhelm died during the WoH. Apparently the Church of Seiros was created before the war, even before the Empire, by followers who were inspired by her miracles or something.

But yes, there used to be a religion before the “Church of Seiros” given how Seteth met his wife in a church in Enbarr, still I cannot say for sure it was here before the first Agarthian war.

Word of God also said Seiros and her friends rewrote history because the Elites and Nemesis were too popular at that time and she wanted to “quell the flames of war and chaos” and keep balance. Kind of unrelated, but given how Marianne is treated in Modern!Fodlan because her ancestor was a (literal) monster, if Seiros revealed the truth about Gloucester, Daphnel and their friends maybe Lorenz and Ingrid would be persecuted and hated like Marianne is...

I don’t have anything to add to the rest, but some tidbits regarding the Empire and what I could hc i mean interpret from them :

Apparently, in the jp version of Hanneman’s C support with Dorothea, Hanneman says in the beginning nobles were supposed to guide and protect people, but in Modern!Fodlan it’s now just a way to discriminate between nobles and non-nobles.

Maybe at its inception the Empire had this idea about what nobility meant, but with time, the notion became used as a tool and emptied of its original meaning, idk.

We also have the “Feast of Decadence” novel, it is fiction (apparently?) but the author, writing this book, thought it was perfectly normal to have northeners being torn apart in the background.

This novel is supposed to happen way after the WoH ended (the Emperor is Lycaon III and we know from Ferdie’s support with Edel (or was it in Feh??) that the Emperor in 100~ was a woman, so she couldn’t have been Lycaon II) but in this context it was normal to have slaughters during a feast celebrating the wedding of the new Emperor.

Given how Rhea has bad history with slaughters for “fun” (as far as she knows Nemesis had no reason to kill everyone in Zanado?) I am pretty sure that if she had been around for Wilhelm I’s wedding, this spectacle would never have happened. Same thing for Lycaon I, the two Emperor she’s sure to have met. Which signifies that either post-Rhea the Emperor thought it was fun to watch northeners suffer, which also adds another kind of discrimination between people from the North and those from the South or the author of this novel had a blood kink and thought it’d be a nice detail, or the author wrote this “decadent feast” to criticise the Empire.

Which ultimately leads to : During Lycaon III’s time, or shortly after, northeners being torn apart during the highest ceremonies were something that happened casually, or it was plausible enough that people from that time could believe it happened.

So combining Hanneman’s “at first nobility was supposed to be this but ended up twisted” and “people ate a lot of bread and fish in honour of Saint Cethleann it was wonderful and northerners were being torn apart and we all laughed” means that even before Ionius IX pulled his centralising policies in place, the Empire was heading down a dark path.

The Southern Church is banned in 1065, way after the Kingdom and the Alliance were recognised as independant nations. In some localised versions (the SP one I think?) it is explained they were banned because they led an insurrection.

So even before Ionius, we have the Empire growing intolerant to its own citizens, stopping being “nobles” in the first sense of the notion, and apparently their ally since creation leads an insurrection. Then, the agarthans happen and they wreck things.

If I had to compare, I’d say Ionius IX and his extreme policies (destroying Hrym and sending Agarthans to Ordelia, a territory in the Alliance, because they helped the people from Hrym) were inevitable since due to the Empire’s decadence, but Edel getting the means and opportunities to start her war was brought by the Agarthans.

It’s as if the Empire is going downhill and you can either choose to let it disappear (SS/AM/VW where the Empire doesn’t exist anymore, it crumbled) or go with it to the bottom of the hill (CF).

Well, this was supposed to be 3 parts but....yeah apparently my brain was like "Nope, it's not." I have AT LEAST two more parts to this little story and it sort of has gone off the rails from the Adele song I based it off of, but that's okay, because it wasn't a complete retelling of the song so...Also, I would like to say that I am back bitches!! I have had two very long days of rest and I am happy to announce that I have at least half of the AUJ part 13 written. I cannot wait to post it and for you all to read it! Also like a HUGE thanks to everyone that comments and kudos on all of my works, it really makes my day, especially after a long and stressful day at work. I know I've been complaining about work a lot and I shouldn't, so I won't anymore. Anyways, please please please comment and let me know what you think, I do appreciate it! Gendry was dumbstruck.

Arya Stark had come back into his life bringing a whole shit storm behind her. He never expected to see her face again, let alone have her in his house. When she left him standing in the rain alone five years before, he truly believed that he would never see those haunting gray eyes stare in his direction again.

He had an opportunity to see her again, but passed, thinking otherwise. He knew that there would be repercussions to seeing each other again, that’s why he stayed away from the Stark family welcome party. He didn’t want to dredge up all those old feelings that he tried so hard to repress.

Unfortunately for him, Arya Stark showed up on his doorstep three days later.

She was the exact same as when she left. Her hair was noticeably longer, but aside from that difference, everything else about her remained the same. She was still quick witted and sharped tongued and her ability to get him yelling with arms in the air never faltered. She was the same Arya…and he hated it.

Only Arya Stark could rile that reaction out him. Only Arya Stark could turn a light-hearted conversation into a screaming match and only Arya Stark could make him fall completely and irrevocably in love with her.

He had tried for years to get her out of his head, but every little thing around would remind him of her. He even went as far as to distance himself from the Stark family, causing great divides between him and Jon’s friendship. It didn’t seem stupid at the time, but know, as he was looking back on his past he realized that he was nothing more than a stupid bullheaded man.

He would have saved himself a whole lot of trouble if he would have just listened to Sansa all those years ago.

The memory of that night was still fresh in his head; burning into his brain making him remember every detail.

It was Jon’s and Dany’s first year wedding anniversary and there was a huge celebration at the Stark manor. Nearly all of Westeros was invited making it the second largest gathering of wealth since their actual wedding.

Jon and Gendry’s friendship was on the rocks, but he was still invited due antiquities between the two.

Arya had been gone for nearly two years and he was just starting to feel like a normal person again. Millie and he had been dating for a year and Mott’s had just given him the shop, making him a business owner. He finally felt like he belonged around the wealthy that mingled beside him.

“Gendry, it’s so good to see you!” Sansa had exclaimed as she gave him a swift hug.

He had been wandering around the hors d’oeuvre table stuffing tiny crab cakes into his mouth. He was ravenous and couldn’t wait for the main event to start before eating.

“Lady Sansa! You look lovely, as always.” He said, returning the hug.

She gave him a small smile before popping a crab cake into her own mouth.

“I didn’t think that we would see you tonight. Where’s Millie? I’ve heard so much about her from Stannis.” Sansa inquired as she took a sip of her wine, washing the crab cake from her mouth.

Gendry shrugged, “I didn’t think I would be coming either, but Millie suggested that I come and mingle. Oh, and she is on a business trip…with Stannis.”

“Ah, that is why the infamous Baratheon is missing.”

Gendry nodded, sipping from his mug of ale.

“I’m surprised, really.” Sansa suddenly said.

Gendry furrowed his eyes in confusion, “About what?”

“Well, that you moved on.” She glanced towards Gendry. He still didn’t mean what she was saying.

“Come on, Gendry! Even a blind man could see that you loved Arya. You were pinning after her when she left nearly two years ago. I honestly believed that you would wait for her.” She confessed to the brawny man before her.

Gendry scoffed, “Well, I can’t wait for her forever.”

“Is that why you’re marrying? Because you can’t wait forever? Or is it because you want to wipe your memories clean of Arya? If it is what I think it is, then you will never be able to forget her, so stop trying and wait for her.” She said to him a stern voice.

Gendry was left speechless cueing Sansa to make her leave.

He couldn’t wait for her. Not when his life was moving forward and hers was…well he wasn’t quite sure what her life was like and he couldn’t wait around to find out.

Now he wishes that he had.

Gendry wanted to believe that his marriage was filled with love, but if he was being completely honesty with himself, there was nothing but emptiness in his relationship. Aside from knowing her name and her religion and where she came from, Gendry knew nothing about his wife, Melisandre. They had met at his uncle’s dinner party shortly after his father’s death.

He remembered staring at her from across the room and being so enamored with her beauty. Her hair was long and resembled the shade of blood. Her face a long and angular, giving her an angelic like quality. It was like he was hypnotized from the very beginning. Stannis had introduced them and from the moment they meet, their relationship was filled with nothing more than meaningless sex and lust.

Gendry had hoped that love would make it’s way into the relationship, and after a year of dating, it seemed as if it was. But as soon as they married, he realized that the love was still missing. It didn’t help that she spent countless weeks away on her business trips with his uncle. She claimed that they were gathering followers for their religion and boosting the company’s membership. But Gendry didn’t believe it, he never believed it.

He knew that she was cheating on him with Stannis, but he was just too caught up in his own life to ever confront her about it. With the taking of Mott’s and the up keep of a manor, Gendry hardly had anytime to sleep, let alone prove that his wife was cheating on him.

On the days and nights that they were both home, they hardly talked. She would be in her study, while Gendry spent his time in the garage tuning up the classic VW Bug his gather had left behind.

In their three years of marriage they had seen each other a total of six weeks, making his marriage nonexistent. He kept telling himself that the next time he saw her he would present the divorce papers that have been in his desk drawer for the last two and half years, but every time he tires, she ends up pulling him back in like a drug he can’t quit.

But not this time.

No, this time there is a reason for the divorce and he let her walk out of his house without so much as goodbye.

He pulled the divorce papers from his desk and waited for his wife’s return.

A/N : I made this mood board for a better visualization of the story!

You woke up the next morning with the worst headache, obvious a hangover was in its wake. You looked over to your nightstand to check your clock, confused because your alarm hadn’t gone off yet. But, your clock wasn’t there, and that wasn’t even your nightstand. You sat up quickly, realizing this wasn’t your bed, and you definitely weren’t in your room. As you tried to remember where you were, you felt the bed move beside you, and you heard ruffling of the sheets. You glanced over to find golden tanned skin, thick lashes pressed softly together, tender lips hung open with deep melodious breaths, and blonde tendrils dancing around the pillow.

You smiled at the sight, until all the memories of last night started coming back. Your smile dropping into a horrified expression.

How could you of let that happen? What were you thinking? You wanted to hit your head against the headboard, but you couldn’t bring yourself to interrupt the peaceful sleep of Billy.

He looked so beautiful, so vulnerable. You almost felt special, like you were the only person ever up until this moment who’s seen him in this state. You watched as his muscular back rose and fell softly, his cheek pressed closely to the fabric beneath him, his shoulders smooth and round, and his tanned arms draped loosely over the pillow.

Before you could stop yourself, you reached over and lifted one of his curls from his eyes, and placed it away from his face. As you did, you noticed the pearl on your finger staring at you.

You quickly pulled back your hand, shaking your head, in a desperate attempt to clear your mind.

You then adjusted yourself under the blankets, making space between you and the sleeping boy. Ripping your eyes from him, you placed them on your ring.

The pearl looked dull, not as lustrous as it did when you first received it, and for the first time, it sat awkwardly on your finger, almost as if it didn’t belong there.

You sighed, squeezing your eyes shut, placing your face in your palms. You didn’t know how to feel, you were so conflicted.

Once you finally picked your head up from your hands, you scooted out from under the sheets and stepped on the carpet floor. You stood to your feet a little too quickly, resulting in a dizziness spell, you struggled to keep your balance. You had made the educated guess you were indeed hungover.

You noticed rather immediately you where in fact naked, and you hurriedly searched for your clothes on the floor. You snatched up your panties and bra from the end of the bed, and tugged them on. You found your jacket under the bed, and pulled it over your shoulders and zipped it up. You couldn’t find your belt, but your shoes were on the other side of the room. You walked over and slipped them on, sighing.

You bit your lip with indecision. Should you wake him up? You decided not to, he looked too peaceful.

You quietly snuck out the door, closing it softly. Once in the hallway, you stepped over sleeping bodies and made your way over to the phone in the kitchen.

You decided the best option was to call Steve, you’re fight seemed small now, irrelevant. All you wanted was to forget everything about yesterday, and to hear his voice again.

You waited, but no answer.

You checked the time on the oven, 6:32 a.m. You scrunched your face in confusion, he was definitely up by now getting ready for school.

You called again, no answer.

You groaned, you needed to be home to have enough time to get ready and be at school on time. Why wasn’t he answering? He was the one calling you all night last night.

So you called Lisa, tapping your foot on the tile floor.

“Hello?” She answered.

“Lisa! It’s me Y/N. I’m stuck at the party, please come get me.” You whisper into the phone, careful not to wake or disturb any of the waisted teens.

“Are you kidding?” She laughed.

“What? No! I’m being for real ... just please come get me.”

“Steve didn’t take you home last night?” She asked, confused.

Your heart started racing, realizing she didn’t know the full story. “Um, no. He never came, I turned out to be fine, I didn’t need him with me. Listen Lisa that’s really not important.” You tried to cover yourself up.

“Okay, okay. I’ll come get you.” She agreed.

“Thank you, I owe you one.” You sigh into the phone, before hanging it up.

You stepped outside, the light bothering your headache. The cold morning breeze froze your bare legs, and you held yourself tight in Lisa’s leather jacket. As you waited for her to pull up, you let your mind wonder to last night, and with confusion you wondered why Steve’s face kept showing up in your memory.

You noticed her small VW Rabbit, and you made your way to the passenger door. Once you stepped inside, you thanked her again.

“It’s fine Y/N, I wouldn’t leave you here anyway. You want me to drop you off at your house?” She asked, as the morning talk show people rambled on about something on the radio.

“Yeah, I just need to get out of this outfit and take a shower, I feel dirty.” You blurt, hoping she doesn’t look too deep into it.

She laughed, “So it was that crazy huh? You seem kind of hungover, you okay?”

You nodded, “It wasn’t that bad, the music was good. I just wanted to get drunk, that’s all.”

She laughed again, “Now I know why you didn’t want to invite Steve.”

You laughed with her, she was right, sort of.

She parked in your driveway, and you kissed her on the cheek goodbye, “Thank you again.”

Once to your front door, you opened it softly hoping to not wake your parents, who normally woke up after you left with Steve to school.

You made your way to your bathroom, and took a quick shower. You ran your hands over your body with your wash, and you couldn’t help but envision Billy’s hands doing the same. You blinked away the thought and continued getting ready. You scrunched up your wet curls, and applied your daily makeup. You quickly stepped into your room and let the towel fall from your body. You slipped on a white cable knit sweater, jeans, thick white socks you scrunched up underneath your tight rolled pants, and your white Reeboks. You pushed in some gold butterfly earrings, and grabbed your bag from your bed.

You checked your alarm clock, 6:54 a.m.

Fuck, school started at 7:15, so you quickly picked up your phone from your nightstand, and dialed Steve’s number.

You bit your lip, waiting for him to answer, he didn’t, it rang for ages.

You sighed irritated, you needed him this morning.

You called three more times, as you did you watched the time tick by on your clock.

You slammed your phone down, frustrated. What was his problem? Why wasn’t he answering your calls?

As you sat with your arms crossed over your chest, you heard the heavy deep engine of your school bus pass your neighborhoods street.

You jumped up frantically, racing to your front door, but you were too late, you watched your bus as it made its way to Hawkins High.

You groaned, running your fingers through your hair. If you weren’t calling Steve you wouldn’t have missed the bus, idiot.

You couldn’t just take your moms car, she had to have it to go to work that day. So, you did what you felt was your last option, you walking into their quiet peaceful room and shook your moms shoulder until she awoke.

“What? Y/N? What are you still doing here?” She asked, confused and groggy.

You sighed, frustrated, “Steve never showed to pick me up, and I was trying to call him as the bus left.”

She scrunched her face up as she sat up, “Did he not he answer you?”

You shook your head, “Nope ... I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine, just give me a second to get ready.” She waved you off, getting out of bed.

You smiled and nodded, leaving her room and heading into the kitchen, grabbing a orange for your breakfast. As you popped a slice into your mouth, you felt your headache pound beneath your forehead. You groaned, wondering if it was from your hangover or your irritation. You walked over to the medicine cabinet, and pulled out a few pain killers and popped it into your mouth before swallowing them down with the tap water.

“Y/N, come on.” Your mom called from the front door.

You hurried to her side, closing the door behind both of you. “Thanks mom, I don’t know what happened.”

As she pulled from the driveway she asked, “Wasn’t he the one who was calling you all night last night?”

Heart played softly through the radio.

“What do you mean? He called me once.” You said confused.

“No, I’m pretty sure he called you more than that.” She said with a hint of annoyance.

You sat stunned, this new information adding to the weirdness of him not answering your calls.

As your mom pulled into the drop off area of your school, you said goodbye quickly before escaping the car, and fast walking on to your campus.

You made your way over to the student parking lot, scanning for Steve’s BMW. You needed to talk to him, you were furious with the act he pulled this morning.

You spotted him leaning against his car, waving his hand around as he talked to Todd, one of his teammates from the basketball team.

You approached him, taking a firm stance beside Todd, crossing your arms. “Hey Todd, can you give us a minute?”

He glanced over at you, “Yeah, whatever.” He shrugged and walked off.

You stared at Steve, he was looking down at his feet, arms also crossed over his chest.

“Can you tell me what the hell happened this morning?” You raised your eyebrows.

He scoffed, “Your mad?”

“Yes Steve! I missed the bus because I kept calling you because you never showed up, I had to get my mom to drive me! Why didn’t you answer my calls?” You tilted your head down to try and get his eye contact, but he just averted his eyes, looking over at the school.

“It’s not hard to guess.” He murmured, glaring at whatever he was looking at.

“The fight we had? Listen, I’m sorry. I know I over reacted, and I didn’t know you were calling me last night-“

“I know,” he cut you off, “You were too busy, at Tiffany’s party.”

Your breath hitched, “How do you know about that?”

He rolled his eyes, pressing off his car and walking away.

You grabbed his hand, pulling him back to you, he snatched it from you, his eyes finally meeting yours, “Don’t touch me.”

“What?” You gasped, then grabbed him by the arm this time when he turned again. “Steve stop-“

“No!” He yanked from you once again, but stepped closer to you, “Don’t fucking touch me!”

Teens standing by their cars in the parking lot turned their attention to you too, including Billy, and the group that surrounded him by his Camaro.

You shhhed him, “Why are you acting like this?”

“You’re joking right? Don’t act stupid Y/N.” He glared down at you.

You stared back at him, your heart sinking. “I-I’m sorry-“

“What? Sorry you got caught!” He yelled.

Your head was spinning, “Steve please-“

“Sorry you cheated on me!” He asked, his face twisting in pain.

“Listen to me-“ You tried to speak, raising your hands up to him.

“For fucks sake Y/N I saw you! You don’t need to explain anything! I fucking saw you and Billy go into that room last night! You fucked him at that fucking party!” He screamed, his face was red and his eyes were watering.

Billy and his circle watched the scene from afar, he took a hard hit from his cigarette. His heart was racing, as he watched you break into a sob.

You felt your tears run down your face and you frantically tried to say, “Steve please, listen, I-I was thinking of you, I was thinking of you the whole time!”

Billy’s chest clenched, he ignored the stares that flew to him. His mind went to this morning, when he threw his arm over in bed to pull you closer to him, but you weren’t there.

“That’s bullshit and you know it.” He laughed, wiping his eyes.

“No, no it’s not bullshit. I love you Steve.” You were practically begging at this point, not caring about the attention you too had made.

“You love me huh? Even when he gave you those hickeys on your neck?” He pointed at them, your eyes widened, How did you not notice?

He turned around, walking away from you, you ran after him, “Steve please just let me explain-“ you grabbed his hand again.

He snatched it from you one last time before saying, “Stay away from me Y/N.” Leaving you alone, shaking with sobs in the parking lot.

Billy sighed and blinked away the tears that threatened to fall, taking a hit from his cigarette. He’s never felt this way about someone before, normally if he found out that a chick wasn’t into him he’d just laugh it off, but he wasn’t anywhere close to laughing, he was heartbroken. His group turned back around, along with everyone else in the parking lot, whispering about the act that just broke out.

“Don’t take it to heart man,” Tommy patted Billy on the back, noticing his distress, “Plenty of bitches in the sea.”

The day was painfully long, you had heard your drama make the rounds of the school for what felt like the thousandth time. In art, you avoided Billy completely, even though you could feel his stare burning into the back of your head. At lunch, Lisa comforted you, as you apologized for not telling her sooner. And when the final bell rang, you made your way too the bus ramp.

As you walked with your head down, avoiding the eyes of everyone, hands grabbed you by the waist pulling you behind a building out of view.

You stood inches from Billy. He seemed to be more distraught than you, his eyes bloodshot and puffy. “We need to talk.”

You tried to push him off you put he tightened his grip, “About last night, about Steve, Y/N, he ... he doesn’t make you happy.” He exclaimed.

“Yes he does.” You defend him.

“It doesn’t seem like it.” He snapped back.

You pulled away from his grasp rolling your eyes, and turned around and walked off. He grabbed you by the waist again, turning and pulling you to him.

“Please ... just let me drive you home, we can talk about it.” He breathed, holding you close.

You brought your hands up to his chest, and shoved him away, as he stumbled back you spat, “About what? There’s nothing to talk about.”

You turned and sped away before you could see his face, knowing you hurt him. You made your way to your bus and found an empty seat, putting your headphones on that were connected to your Walkman, it played Cinderella, and you leaned your head against the window, before letting your mind spin with thoughts.

You knew for a fact you loved Steve, and you regretted hurting him. But, you didn’t regret getting closer to Billy. You loved the way he made you feel, the way he excepted every piece of you, unapologetically. But, you couldn’t tell for sure if you were just one of his many accomplishments, another notch in his belt. But, you knew Steve loved you, undoubtedly, the ring guaranteed it.

Once the bus came to your stop, you walked down the steps and down to your house. You opened the front door, home alone. You went into your room, kicking off your shoes before falling on to your bed.

You let a few tears seep in your pillow, before sitting up. You glanced over at your phone on your nightstand, staring at it.

You grabbed it and dialed Steve’s number, knowing he wouldn’t answer, but you just wanted to try. You held it up to your ear, waiting.

No answer.

You set it down, sighing. A piece of you didn’t want to mend your relationship, a very small piece of you. But it was there, and you couldn’t ignore it. You tried to convince yourself that Steve’s disapproval with the choices you made in your life didn’t bother you, but they did, a lot. The thought of not having to deal with that anymore, made you feel relieved. But, also guilty, extremely guilty. You shouldn’t of gotten mad at him in the first place, and you definitely shouldn’t of gotten drunk and cheated on him. Cheated? Was it cheating? You technically were broken up, you had ended it with him, you weren’t really planning on getting back together with him, you only decided differently this morning, after waking up next to Billy. Was all this really driven by guilt? It couldn’t of been, you loved Steve. But ... Billy made you feel so understood. He made you happy, as much as you wanted to deny it, he was right. You weren’t happy with Steve. But, you thought of him when you slept with Billy, Why? Because you love him! And you don’t want to think about your problems you just want to remember the good time with him, like when you’d be intimate together. You tried to remember what is was like sleeping with Billy, you had a faint memory of his face, and his body in the moonlight. You smiled, touching your lips, remembering the kiss you shared in the living room of Tiffany’s house. You knew that if you weren’t drunk, you probably wouldn’t of done it, but, something in you didn’t regret it. You really wanted to know what it was like, to be the girl that Billy Hargrove pursued. It hurt to think that he just used you for sex, but, you couldn’t tell for sure if that was really the case. The small things he’d say to you, made you wonder if you really weren’t like every other girl. Like when he offered you a ride instead of taking the bus, and when he parked outside of your house, practically begging you to go to the party, and when you did, he said he had been waiting for you all night. Was that all just a part of his act? Did he do that with Tracy, or Tiffany, or Sherri, or Diana? The list went on, and you felt the churn in your stomach, the feeling of heartbreak. But, was that it? Or was it just because you hadn’t eating anything but an orange today. You groaned, realizing your feelings for Billy ran deeper than you thought. He had a hold on you, and he didn’t know it. In fact, after the way you talked to him after school, he probably thinks you hate him, and regret everything. You thought you did, you really thought you did. But, after thinking about it, you realized - yes, you did love Steve, but only the fabricated part, the part that cuddled you in his bed and gave you a promise ring, and ... you felt more for Billy than you ever thought was possible.

Thursday

Virgil stared at the empty conversation for what felt the millionth time, trying to find the right words. Fuck it. I need to just do this. Like a bandaid. I can do this.

[To:Patton]- Hey Patton, this is Virgil.

[To:Patton]- From your coffee shop the other day.

Fuck, that was bad. Well, there's nothing I can do about it now. He opened the case files he brought home to review, trying to distract himself, but gave up after about 10 minutes and started watching The Office for the fifteenth time. He was three episodes in when his phone went off.

[Patton]- Hi!! I hope this doesn't come across as pushy or anything, but do you wanna go out sometime? I'm really bad at communicating through text, and I think you're really cute

[Virgil<3]- it totally doesn't. Yeah, I'd love to meet up. What are you up to on Saturday?

[Patton]- Going to the de Young with you, hopefully? I have a membership

[Virgil<3]- That would be amazing!! I've been dying to go see the Monet exhibition.

[Patton]- Me too! I'll pick you up at noon on Saturday, then?

[Virgil<3]- Sounds great!

[Patton]- I can't wait! I guess I don't need to ask where you live lol

[Virgil<3]- haha yeah I guess not. I'll see you then :)

Virgil put his phone down and took a deep breath. Holy SHIT am I really doing this?? Patton's so cute, but I'm a mess. But it's Monet at the de Young, and Patton seems so… good. Like, too good for me. God, I'm really good fuck this up, aren't I?

[Patton]- Take a deep breath; it's gonna be great. There's absolutely no need to worry :)

… Holy fuck I'm so gay. Patton had attached a selfie with a huge smile and a thumbs-up.

Saturday

Taking a deep breath, Virgil looked in the mirror and adjusted his tie. He didn't even wear ties to work, but a date to see Monet's works in person deserved better than his everyday work attire, let alone his usual weekend outfit of a t-shirt, an old hoodie with purple plaid patches, and black jeans. He tried not to think about the last time he wore the black tie, but he couldn't shut the train of thought off fast enough.

It's raining. Of course it is. He loved the rain so much; it's only fitting it's raining when we have to say goodbye.

"He'd hate that we're all here being sad, you know. He'd say we were being lame and that he deserves something more fabulous. He'd also be pissed that I'm talking to you, not him, at an event about him, even if it is his funeral. So, Remy, you dramatic, self-absorbed ass, I'm standing in front of all of these people, and I'm gonna talk to just you.

First of all, I'm more sorry than I can say. You told me he would be willing to break his rules, and I didn't trust you. You were always right, and I hated that. If you were here, you'd tell me to shut the fuck up and say that I know I love you. I absolutely and completely love you. And that's why it kills me that I couldn't protect you. You weren't just my partner, you were my best friend, and I failed at the absolute minimum. God, Remy, you deserved so much better. I'm sorry I couldn't be better.

But fuck this melancholy shit. You told me once that you wanted to put the 'fun' in funeral. So, everybody," Virgil continued, addressing the crowd again, "as Remy said so often, 'let's cut the shit and drink'. Scandals downtown is ready and waiting for us to fuck shit up in his memory."

Coming back to the present, Virgil wiped the tear from his cheek and rolled up the sleeves of his purple dress shirt. Patton's gonna be here any minute; I need to finish getting ready.

Before he knew it, there was a knock at the door. He took a deep breath and was glad he did when he opened the door and briefly forgot how to breathe, because standing there on his doorstep was 5 feet and 7 inches of the most beauty Virgil had ever seen in one person. Patton wasn't the most conventionally attractive- whereas society as a whole prized hard lines and defined muscles, Patton was soft lines and the kindest eyes imaginable. Virgil couldn't explain why, but Patton exuded kindness and trustworthiness. He didn't realize he'd been staring until the sound of a throat clearing startled him.

"Oh, um, I was staring, huh?" Virgil asked, embarrassed.

Patton nodded, blushing. "Yeah, but I was too. You look really good."

"Thanks, you do too, but I guess you already knew that I feel that way." In his efforts to avoid eye contact, Virgil noticed the pin on Patton's shirt- simply reading 'they/them'. "Are those your pronouns?"

"Yeah, they are." Patton's posture immediately shifted- standing straighter and narrowing their eyes. "Is that a problem?"

"Not in the slightest." He smiled when Patton visibly relaxed, their megawatt smile returning in full force.

"Wonderful! Now, let's go see some art almost as beautiful as you. I'll drive." Patton winked and started walking. It took Virgil a second to remember how to breathe, let alone move, but he quickly caught up once he did. He stopped short again when he saw their car- a classic black VW Beetle in perfect condition.

"Holy shit, Patton. Your car is gorgeous."

"Oh my goodness thank you! She was my dad's."

"Like I said, it's- she's beautiful. Maintenance must be a nightmare, though. What year is she?"

"1955. Maintenance isn't that bad- my dad taught me how to keep her in shape after I came out in high school. He thought getting my hands dirty would turn me into 'a real man'."

"Shit, I'm sorry, Pat." They shrugged.

"It's no big deal. Joke's on him- I'm still queer as hell, but now I can keep this beauty in good shape. Get in! She's old, but she won't bite!" Laughing, Virgil got in the car, and they left for the museum.

"Monet was a founder of Impressionism as a counterpoint to Realism, which had been popular for about ten years before Impressionism started developing and twenty-four years before the term Impressionism was first used.

Realism grew in popularity with the rise of photography; artists wanted their works to look objectively real, and strove to remove emotion. They largely focused on the working class and depicted life as it was, without any sentimentality or heroism.

Monet never really bought into that. His early works works, though chronologically in the Realism era, were always painted with intense emotion, and he rarely painted people. He began playing with the concept that what we understand of reality is just our perception, and he was far from alone in those thoughts. Marx held that belief as well, going further and saying that all we have in our minds are ideologies, not facts or truths, and they act as filters, shaping everything we experience.

Rousseau died two centuries before the rise of Impressionism, but he summed up the philosophy well when he said 'I feel before I think'. Monet's paintings, while indistinct and 'messy' up close, evoke strong emotion only when one looks at the piece as a whole. We feel it before we get close enough to see and think about what it's really made of." Strictly speaking, Virgil didn't need to be speaking softly into Patton's ear with his hand on their waist, standing so closely behind them that he could feel the movement of their chest with each breath. Neither of them, however, would ever dream of complaining.

Patton reluctantly stepped out of Virgil's embrace and turned to look at him in awe. "That's incredible, Virgil. How do you know all that?"

"Oh, um, thanks. I really like art philosophy, and Monet is my favorite artist. I dunno, something about making order out of chaos is really calming."

"I feel the same way! Life is sorta like a puzzle, or Monet's brush strokes. Each one, taken individually, doesn't make much sense. We all feel and experience things like that, things that are confusing or sometimes even scary. But as we keep going, we find more and more pieces, and things make more and more sense. Feeling like a half-missing puzzle set is okay, as long as we remember the big picture. If any of that makes sense." Patton chuckled nervously, scratching behind his ear.

"No, it made perfect sense. What would you say the big picture is?"

"Well, I'd say it's doing as much good as possible. Whether it's big things, like being a doctor, firefighter, or teacher, like my brother, or small things, like putting a smile on someone's face with a pun or a good cup of coffee. It's our duty as people to make the world around us a better place, however we can."

"That's a really beautiful way of looking at things, Patton." Virgil gave them a small smile. He started to say more, but he was interrupted by the growling of his stomach. "Oh, shit. I was so nervous this morning, I forgot to eat. Wanna go to the cafe and get lunch? My treat, since you still haven't let me pay you back for the coffee."

"I told you, it was a gift! And don't think for a second that I didn't notice that you tipped almost triple what you would have paid if I had charged you." Their smirk was only slightly lessened by the fact that they had to tilt their head back slightly to make eye contact.

"You got me there, but I'm still buying. No, stop that- no amount of puppy dog eyes can change my mind."

"Well, you can't blame a guy for trying." Patton shrugged. "Alright, let's go get some food. You're already almost alarmingly skinny- if we don't get some food in you, you might disappear altogether." Patton started walking backwards towards the cafe, not breaking eye contact.

"Hey! I'm a perfectly normal weight for my height." Virgil started walking too, shaking his head.

"Which is what, 6'3? You need to eat more than the average person, not less. Skipping meals isn't good for you, kiddo."

"I know that. You're just really cute, and I got nervous," he admitted, blushing.

"Flattery will get you everywhere. Now come on, let's eat." They winked before turning around and skipping away. Virgil followed, completely smitten.

"Mr. Dean, a minute?" Logan called after his least favorite student. It was almost 7 pm- students on campus at this hour outside of football season was unheard of, and the last game of the season was weeks ago.

"Greetings and salutations, Mr. Reed. It's JD, though. Mr. Dean is my father." He sauntered to Logan, disdain clear on his face. Logan couldn't be sure if it was towards himself, Mr. Dean, or both.

"Yes, erm, JD, what are you doing on campus so late? Your attendance record in my class alone indicates a disinclination towards being here during school hours, let alone so late."

"That's just the thing, Mr. Reed. No one wants me to be here now."

"Ah, I see. A contrarian. It's not safe to be out here alone, however. The sun set hours ago, and there's a killer on the loose, if the news is to be believed. Come with me, I'll drive you home."

"Thanks, sir, but I'm fine. I'm a fighter, you see. Let the bastard come after me- it'll be the last mistake he ever makes."

"Save the bravado for your peers. I will not take no for an answer- if anything happened to you, it would be on my conscience. My car is in the parking lot. Go." Logan commanded.

"If you insist." He gave a mocking bow before turning away from Logan and walking to the car. If he turned back around, he would have seen a cold, malicious smile spread across his teacher's face. He didn't turn around.

on my shelf: soundtrack to my third year of uni - summer

Now that was a busy semester! It felt super long (and super short). The first half was relatively relaxed but I’ve been permanently stressing out about something uni-related (usually my English Lit oral exam) since the end of May. But the worst is finally over and I can finally make this post as per tradition!

Basically, in the first half of the semester I listened to a bunch of different stuff, but since May I’ve basically only listened to one group and consumed almost exclusively their content... dear readers, I have become an ARMY. I never thought it would happen, but here we are. More on that below. Let’s get into my soundtrack for the semester (and this time it’s basically in chronological order)!

SWMRS: Berkeley’s on Fire (2019)

My first encounter with SWMRS was seeing them open up for All Time Low in my first or second semester and I loved them. But I couldn’t really get into their first album (Drive North) and Berkeley’s on Fire also took me a while, but only because I was so busy listening to Charlie Burg in February. I think this album is much more representative of who SWMRS are as a band and of the group I saw live in 2017. It’s diverse but full of energy from start to finish. It’s got heart, it’s sincere, and it talks about a whole range of topics that are sometimes important and sometimes more heartfelt. I especially loved listening to “Bad Allergies” during allergy season, because, well, same. This album gets you moshing alone and also contemplating life, which is very much my cup of tea. My favourite track is probably “Trashbag Baby”.

The Maine: You Are OK (2019)

Another band that I have listened to before, on and off, and never really found much of a connection with (though I did kind of love American Candy - the Warped Tour Instagram account gave out digital copies for free once, so I downloaded it because- free things). Some of my mutuals were very excited and in love with this album though and I also needed to hear that message, so I checked it out and completely understood what they were on about. I’d call some of the songs “epic” without them sounding forced to be like that - they don’t have that stadium rock, U2/Coldplay/Imagine Dragons feeling, where it can sometimes seem heartless and corporate. This album drips with love and heart and genuine caring. It makes me feel uplifted and wallowful, comforted and sad, all at the same time. I especially love the first four tracks and would recommend checking out “Slip The Noose”.

Vampire Weekend: Father of the Bride (2019)

It finally happened!! For the first time since I became a fan in 2013/14 Vampire Weekend finally released new music!!! And it’s so good!!! For a solid like 2-3 weeks this one album was all I listened to. It’s both quintessentially Vampire Weekend and somehow also totally different than their previous stuff. Although, MVOTC was also a pretty big change and now it’s just a normal part of the trilogy. Album 4 is very long, but listening to the whole thing in one go isn’t any effort at all, because the tracks are so diverse and the order they’re in mixes the styles up nicely. You have some country-leaning tracks (the duets with Danielle Haim - which had me very excited because I love HAIM) that invoke more classical country and are very tasteful (as is the entire album to be fair). You have upbeat, fun tracks like “This Life” and even “Harmony Hall” (that brings back one of my absolute favourite VW lyrics: “I don’t wanna live like this, but I don’t wanna die”) that still have a dark undertone (”This life and all its suffering / Oh Christ, am I good for nothing?” over a boppy guitar). You have moody songs like “My Mistake” and rock-y songs like “Sympathy” and just basically a whole bunch of different things that all have that undeniable VW essence, even with a whole lot less of Rostam. I can’t forget the first time I listened to the album at midnight and was surprised by every new song. Would recommend for summer listening, but probably every other season as well. “Sympathy” is my favourite track.

BTS: (basically their entire discography since The Most Beautiful Moment in Life) (2015-2019)

Quick rundown of my history with BTS (even if probably no one cares): ARMYs start showing up everywhere on the internet in about 2015 and I’m annoyed by them and by the K-pop industry because of the manufactured feeling I got from the music (although I did love SNSD’s “Gee” - it’s a classic after all). The first time I really paid attention to them was around the time “FAKE LOVE” was released and gained a lot of international attention. I wanted to check out the hype. I disliked it so much, it made me uncomfortable because of how they looked and there was just too much going on for me in the music and in the video. But I’d also heard of “DNA” being popular and I kind of loved that song, although the music video was still too busy for me. Same with “IDOL” when that was released - super overwhelming. I wish someone had told me that they also had songs that weren’t nearly as overwhelming and very much my taste in music. But I figured that out by about May this year. So they started promo’ing “Boy With Luv” and I checked out a couple of their live performances on American TV of it and was pretty impressed by the song, their look, their dancing... When they were at the Grammy’s J-Hope’s smile seemed so genuine, friendly and warm, and that was the moment I thought - oh no. Here we go. Ultimately, it was their performance(s) on SNL that got me hooked. I wanted to know their names and watched a bunch of YouTube videos explaining who everyone is and their personalities got me. Everything I thought about K-pop - they weren’t and aren’t it. I started watching interviews and loving Suga because he can be so dead-pan. I started listening to their music and it just made me feel so good. Even though I don’t understand 95% of what they’re saying exactly, I can still tell, because their genuineness, their heart, their message comes through in the music and the tone of their voices. Map of the Soul: Persona was the first album/EP of theirs I listened to and I was kind of skeptical about if I’d like their music in general or not, but then I listened to J-Hope’s Hope World and decided to give their other music a proper chance, and I’m so glad I did. They cover so many different styles of music that there’s definitely something for everyone. Their music, their personalities, their seemingly endless video content, their message, their authenticity, their love for their fans, their existence is literally the only thing that got me through the past couple of months. Because of them I was able to wind down after a long, stressful day and just laugh out loud. Because of them, I didn’t have a chance to wallow in my sadness. Man, this is sounding so cliché and sappy, but whatever, this is the truth. And while I was very embarrassed to admit it a couple of months ago, I can now openly say I love BTS. I love every member (but since this is a thing in kpop fandoms: my bias is Yoongi/Suga and my “bias wreckers” are Hobi/J-Hope and Jin) and I love every album/EP (but at the moment especially Love Yourself: Tear). Some songs I love a lot are “Seesaw”, “Epiphany”, “134340″, “Pied Piper”, and “Spring Day”.

This was a long post, I’m sorry! But I just wanted to get all of that out there, also just as a reminder for myself of why I loved these four albums so much this semester. The take away from this post, I think, is that sometimes, it might take a while before you appreciate something, but when you do, it’s all the more rewarding.

How do I stay sane on the information superhighway?

A month ago, I read an article written by Angus Hervey on Future Crunch with the title “The Information Diet”. It stroke the right note in conveying the brutal truth: We are drowning in a chaotic pool of information.

As with everything in life, we can only truly process information through moderate input. However, it is so hard to control how information can come through to us. In fact, we receive new information mostly passively, through social media networks, TV and radio.

The Original Information Diet

This is when The Information Diet comes into action. It is a guideline on how we can keep ourselves informed and where we can find more trustworthy sources.

The Information Diet by Angus Hervey suggests that a healthy diet should consist of:

Mindset = dietary philosophy aka “a central organizing principle” around which to create the diet

Books = wholewheat grains

Email newsletters = vegetables

Podcasts = leafy greens

Reddit = beans and pulses

Specialist publications = fruit

Social media = junk food

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

My version of The Information Diet

Before having discovered the article, I had already realized my problem with information overload. There were times when I found myself reading too many things, yet I could not remember a damn thing I’d read. I was overwhelmed by the amount of information coming at me through all angles: Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn newsfeed, newspapers, radio, email newsletters, etc. (luckily I don’t watch TV, or else it would have been another strain on my poor attention).

I felt like a rotten VW Beetle on the information superhighway.

During an episode of immense frustration, I decided to review all of my information sources. After all, we can never know everything because knowledge is infinite, so the least I could do for myself is to entertain my brain with the most relevant things.

I started by jotting down my problem zones aka things that annoy me the most, both in degree of frustration and frequency of disturbance. It came down to these:

I spent way too much time scrolling mindlessly through my Facebook newsfeed. I’ve already unfollowed all trivial pages and prioritized more “informational pages” by marking them as “see first” pages. Somehow, the better posts would run out in no time and I would go back to watching meaningless short clips and cracking up at countless memes. At the back of my mind, I knew I should stop scrolling and get real stuff done. In reality, I wasted hours every day just by lying in bed with my phone hovering over my tired eyes.

My addiction to checking emails is real. I can’t help but keep my mailbox all-read and organized at all times. Add to that a dangerously large amount of email newsletters that I’ve subscribed to, and you’d find me pulling my phone out to check for new emails every 10 minutes. Not only did I subscribe to advertisement newsletters from brands, but there were also informational newsletters, which I used to justify my overuse.

I felt like I don’t have time to read books. Even when I did sit down with a book, my mind kept wandering and I couldn’t concentrate.

Step 1: Tackle the Facebook newsfeed

I’ve been actively not checking my Facebook newsfeed since December last year and I must tell you, it’s hard (duh). I deleted the Facebook app on my phone a long while ago, so every time I want to access Facebook, I must do it on my phone browser. It helped just a little, because I was still binging on the newsfeed occasionally. The difference between an app and the mobile site is not as significant as I thought.

Until The Information Diet brought the Newsfeed Eradicator to my life. It is God in the form of a browser plugin, whose sole mission is to eradicate the Facebook newsfeed from desktop and mobile browsers. Users are still able to view posts and everything else when they go directly to the user profiles and pages.

The Newsfeed Eradicator is truly the saver of my dilemma. Now, I can freely check my FB messages without being lured to scroll for just-a-little-bit on the newsfeed.

Step 2: Unsubscribe to irrelevant newsletters

There have been newsletters that I found useful in the past. For example, I subscribed to my favorite fashion brands to know when sales were to happen. Nowadays, I don’t support fast fashion anymore and thrift most of my clothes, so I can’t see myself subscribing to fashion brands’ newsletters anymore.

Step 3: Subscribe to more relevant newsletters

Now, this is the most important step to take on my journey to staying sane on the information superhighway. This is the part where I set down boundaries to keep me on track. Over time, I’ve accumulated a list of newsletters which I find informative, helpful and interesting to read.

To avoid being in a filter bubble, I prefer a variety of newsletters from authors of different backgrounds. My interests are technology, productivity, psychology, philosophy, and climate change, so I make sure that I receive numerous opinions about the same matter before deciding my own POV.

Here are my personal favorites:

TLDR

They really deliver what they claim. It takes under 10 minutes to go through the newsletter. All news are up-to-date and relevant.

TLDR is the first “techie” newsletter that I’ve subscribed to. I’ve recommended so many friends to check it out. The world that we live in is becoming increasingly influenced by technology. The digital transformation affects each and every one of us. Therefore, it makes so much sense to be informed.

Future Crunch

Of course, I have to mention Future Crunch. After all, it is where I found The Information Diet.

The team at FC introduces themselves on their homepage:

Future Crunch is a group of scientists, artists, researchers and entrepreneurs that believes science and technology are creating a world that is more peaceful, connected and abundant.

As a result, FC newsletters feature scientific and technology breakthroughs all over the world. It is nice to be reminded of the good things happening in a world where only breaking news can make headlines.

Dense Discovery

My inner nerd sang heavenly songs when I found out Dense Discovery – “a weekly newsletter helping web workers be productive, stay inspired, and think critically.”

Besides being abundant with useful information, DD itself is a beautifully crafted email newsletter in a very much friendly and readable format.

The Whippet by McKinley Valentine

At last, a worthwhile newsletter by a female author! McKinley Valentine is the woman whom I aspire to be. She writes eloquently and finds stuff you wouldn’t normally find on the internet. Her newsletters are a combination of her own writing and links to interesting stuff she’s been reading about, with absolutely zero mention of Trump or any other contemporary politics (her words).

There are some more newsletters that I subscribe to, but for the sake of this lengthy post, I decided to feature my most favorites here. If you are interested in knowing more or are looking for newsletters about a certain subject, be sure to check out The Information Diet article. You will find an exhaustive list of recommended newsletters.

My advice for beginners: Start with a few and slowly add more along the way. If you subscribe to a bunch of newsletters all at once, you may feel overwhelmed when your inbox is flooded with information. You can’t just trick the brain into acknowledging that reading these newsletters is good for you. It already knows. But upon a huge pile of information and potential overload, your brain will automatically protect itself by refusing to process anything. Also, remember to keep your newsletters in check from time to time. If you stop reading a certain newsletter, be sure to find out why and unsubscribe if necessary.

Step 4: Befriend podcasts & audiobooks

This step is solely personal preference. Because I’m having trouble reading physical books, I turn to audiobooks to temporarily solve my problem.

I think that my attention ability has been damaged by my endless scrolling on social media, to the point that I can’t concentrate to read a few book pages anymore. While I slowly reintroduce my brain to long-form reading (by reading rather lengthy articles and newsletters), audiobooks are here to save the day.

I don’t force myself to hear audiobooks all the time nor do I set any goals. I just listen when I feel like it. This mentality results in me voluntarily listening to an audiobook whenever I’m commuting, standing in line or running errands. I’ve been a productivity freak in the past, and boy oh boy did it mess me up. Nowadays, I know better than to force my brain to do stuff it doesn’t want to. Surprisingly, I can get more stuff done without feeling like I have to do anything at all. There are days when I just want to be a sloth, and that’s totally fine. We are not our productivity.

Back to audiobooks: I prefer ones that are narrated by the authors because they certainly know the tone better than anyone else.

If you are new to audiobooks and don’t want to commit to a subscription service like Audible yet, there are many good audiobooks on Youtube to try out. What I do: I download these audiobooks as .mp3 file, then listen on my phone via an app called BookPlayer. It’s super easy to use and doesn’t gobble up much precious battery juice.

I can’t speak any better for the necessity of an information diet. We should stay well-informed and practice our critical thinking ability before the information flood gets ahead of us.

Taemin/Kibum; a couple of kids (part 1/2); PG

“Wanna have a sleepover tonight?” Taemin asks casually during fifth period Psychology.

“I can’t, sorry,” Kibum says. “Nicole and I have the same Lit project due on Friday so I’m gonna spend the night at hers instead.” He shrugs like he’s declining a simple offer to hang out instead of what they both know it really was.

Kibum comes to him first.

Taemin knows he’s the first because it’s 9:34 on a Thursday night, Kibum taps on his bedroom window, and he has a duffle bag pulled over his shoulder.

Taemin had been eating graham crackers and watching anime in bed when the knock came, and he’d been reasonably confused, but he’d let Kibum in anyway. As he watches Kibum wiggle over the windowsill, he takes note of how he’s wearing several layers of everything and how his little VW bug is parked out on the street.

“Hey,” he says when Kibum straightens up and tugs off a beanie or three.

“Hey,” Kibum smiles back, unwrapping a few scarves from around his neck like this is completely normal. “Can I spend the night?” he asks. “Or, the weekend?” He coils his scarves up neatly and tosses them and the beanies on Taemin’s Chair of Stuff in the corner. Taemin glances at his left cheek where he has hastily applied makeup over a slightly swollen spot and then back to his eyes. There’s something as off in them as the rest of this situation.

“Sure,” he shrugs, pushing Kibum’s bag closer to the wall gently with his foot. It rustles with the sounds of makeup and jewelry and coins. “Why didn’t you come through the front door?” he asks curiously. Kibum looks up from where he’s wiggling out of a few pairs of sweats and shorts.

“I didn’t feel like bugging your parents,” he shrugs. Taemin hums knowingly. Good point. It is kind of late. They can officially ask if he can spend the weekend tomorrow after school. “Hey, you know that extra backpack in your closet?” Kibum asks then. Taemin glances at his closet quickly and nods. It’s his shitty old one from middle school that he doesn’t even know why he still keeps. “Can I borrow it?” Kibum asks.

“You can have it,” Taemin says. He really doesn’t care. Kibum makes a noise, almost a protest, but he’s smiling again when Taemin turns back to him with a curious hum.

“Thanks,” he says quickly. Taemin nods again, taking a few steps back to sit on his bed and watch as Kibum unbuttons four or five shirts and folds them all neatly. He gets settled like he was before, bundled up in his blankets and everything, except on the right side of his bed instead of in the middle this time. Kibum heads to his closet and tugs the backpack off of the shelf Taemin had thrown it on. He walks back to his duffle and bends down to unzip it, then pulls out a bunch of stuff to transfer to the smaller bag. His makeup bags, his jewelry boxes, a bag full of coins and a wad of cash, brush and comb, toothbrush toothpaste and floss picks, body wash and shampoo, his hair straightener, phone charger, various snacks, and on. Then he fits all of his clothes in the now empty space next to what clothes were already in there.

When he’s done, he zips both up and pushes them even more out of the way. He’d had his pajamas under all of those clothes and he fluffs his fingers through his chalk dyed bangs with a satisfied little hum.

“There,” he says, straightening up brightly. He bounces over to Taemin’s bed and wiggles under the blankets with him, taking a graham cracker for himself and peering nosily at the laptop screen like usual. “What are we watching?” he asks.

“Swimming anime,” Taemin says, wiping a speck of dust off of beautiful Nagisa’s face. Kibum rolls his eyes and shifts to get more comfortable with his head against Taemin’s shoulder. He first nuzzles his cheek against Taemin’s shirt, but then hisses in pain and moves to rest his temple there instead. Taemin gives him his right earbud and sticks the left in his own ear, tapping the spacebar to start where he left off.

He’s not going to ask.

He can guess what happened anyway. It’s not like it’s not obvious. Taemin knows who Kibum is, knows who his parents are, knows that they one hundred percent to not approve of the kind of person that their kid became. He saw Kibum’s post about an hour ago that said nothing but “fuck it i’m gonna do it.” It’s not hard to put all of the evidence together. And Kibum obviously doesn’t want to talk about it, so Taemin’s not going to bring it up.

“How do you not have any napkins?” Kibum grumbles, reaching over Taemin for a tissue from his bedside table to catch his crumbs in. Taemin snorts. The tissues are his napkins. He flicks a graham cracker crumb at Kibum’s neck and ignores his indignant squawk in favor of focusing on his swimming anime boys instead. Kibum settles after a minute and does the same.

In the morning, Kibum scoots into Taemin’s bathroom after him, does his makeup up all nice and pretty, and throws another stuffed bag into the backseat of his car so Taemin can ride shotgun on the way to school.

“Wanna have a sleepover tonight?” Taemin asks casually during fifth period Psychology. He props his cheek up in his hand so he doesn’t fall asleep from the cozy warmth of the heated air, such a nice contrast to the snow falling outside. Kibum glances up from where he’s scribbling down the homework in his planner.

“I can’t, sorry,” he says. “Nicole and I have the same Lit project due on Friday so I’m gonna spend the night at hers instead.” He shrugs like he’s declining a simple offer to hang out instead of what they both know it really was. Still, though. Taemin hums. That’s a relief. He knows for a fact that Kibum hasn’t landed a friend’s place to stay at every single night in the passed month. He has a lot of friends, but sometimes luck just isn’t on his side. Taemin still feels guilty about the one time he had to turn Kibum down because his brother was having his girlfriend over for dinner.

“Well, if you’re free, let me know,” Taemin shrugs. He doesn’t want Kibum to have back problems from sleeping in his car again added onto all of the other shit he’s dealing with. He would be offering his bed every night if he thought Kibum wouldn’t get annoyed at him for it. He treads carefully, though, stroking Kibum’s pride, only offering every now and again like he would normally.

Kibum did come over just last Saturday, which Taemin guesses was recently enough. It wasn’t to spend the night, though; just to hang out and almost casually switch some clothes with the duffle bag that Taemin moved into his closet before he went to crash at Woohyun’s. Taemin took the liberty of hanging up some of his nicer winter clothes so they would be less wrinkled, which he knows that Kibum appreciates even if he did scoff at the lazy way he did it and spend ten minutes rehanging them all the proper way.

Taemin doesn’t know exactly why it is that Kibum has only told him. Maybe it’s because he’s usually so quiet about everything. Maybe Kibum just thinks he’s super trustworthy or something. They have been friends for five years, ever since art class in seventh grade. But of their close friends, he knows that Kibum spends more time with Jonghyun, and he knows that Minho definitely has more to offer in terms of both space and time, and he knows that Jinki is far more responsible than he is. Still, he hasn’t asked. Kibum has his reasons. And he’s a good friend. If he was the best person in Kibum’s mind to come to, Taemin isn’t going to go out of his way to prove him wrong.

It’s honestly fucking astounding how loud Taemin’s bathroom shower is when he’s not the one inside of it. He watches the door, amazed at how he can hear every rush and splash of the water as Kibum showers. It’s only loud in his room, too; he checked if he could hear it standing on the other side of his bedroom door and it was as muffled as showers usually are, which is good. It’s just… weird. To not be the one in there for once.

As he’s listening to the shower, he also hears Kibum sniffling grossly for the umpteenth time. It’s followed by two sneezes, the clatter of what sounds like Kibum’s tiny face cream container, and a barely audible hissed curse, and Taemin rolls his eyes. Holy shit.

The water turns off a few minutes later and Kibum steps out a while after that, towel hung over the heater to dry and dirty clothes folded neatly over his arm. He throws Taemin a quick smile as he tucks his clothes into his bag. Taemin looks him up and down appraisingly. Hmm. Blowdried hair, thick socks, his warm pajamas, and a loose beanie. Good.

“Here,” he says when Kibum comes up to join him in bed. He picks up the little medicine cup he went out to the kitchen to get earlier and holds it out. “There’s little tongue strips or a nyquil.” He couldn’t remember if Kibum could swallow pills or not so he just got both.

“Oh,” Kibum says, his voice thick with his congestion. “No, I’m good,” he mumbles, waving Taemin away. Taemin just looks at him for a moment.

“You are not getting me sick just because you want to pretend like your life is fine right now,” he says bluntly. Kibum winces and glares at him but Taemin holds out the cup insistently anyway. “Take the medicine,” he commands. “It’s not like I wouldn’t give it to you regularly anyway.” He shrugs. That’s like. Half true. Technically, he would never need to give medicine to a sick friend because a sick friend wouldn’t be spending the night, but also, if a friend did happen to get sick around him, he wouldn’t not help them. Kibum hesitates for a moment more, than sighs shortly and snatches the little strip packets out of Taemin’s hand.

Taemin puts the cup with the pill in it back on his bedside table gratefully. Good. Now Kibum won’t be sniffling every five seconds anymore and they’ll be able to sleep and then go to school tomorrow with enough rest.

Taemin frowns at his last thought, looking back up to Kibum. School. Ugh.

“You really shouldn’t be going to school like this,” he mumbles.

“Yeah, right, let me just ask my fucking dad to call me in sick,” Kibum snaps. His voice is harsh and sharp and Taemin blinks, taken aback at the suddenness of it. Shit.

“I didn’t--mean it like that,” he says, rubbing his nose embarrassedly as Kibum takes a few sips from his water bottle to wash the medicine down. “Just,” he says. That it sucks. That he can’t do that, that he can’t give the school an excuse for needing a break... but obviously, Kibum has been bitter about that for a while already. “Why don’t you just… skip tomorrow?” he asks. “You can stay here and use my laptop.” He doesn’t mind. It’s not like his parents are home during school hours anyway. “I think it’s like, five days in a row without an excuse before you’re considered truant.” It’s just a little cold. He can get better before that easily. Kibum scoffs, though, shaking his head.

“So, what, the school calls my parents and tells them I didn’t show up?” he asks. “I bet that will make their day, that I’m fucking floundering on my own.” He yanks Taemin’s blankets down so he can wiggle into the bed with him, but pulls them up to his chin and curls up into a grumpy ball. Taemin sighs, pushing his hair out of his face.

“That’s not…,” he starts. That’s not the point. A few days missed because of a cold isn’t floundering. And the imagined opinions of his parents aren’t worth risking his health over. “Like,” he says. “You don’t--”

“Taemin, can you just--” Kibum says loudly, but his words get cut off by a gross sounding cough. He muffles it into his pajama collar and pops back up when he’s done with a tired groan. “I don’t want to talk about it,” he mutters. “I’m sick and cold and you’re stressing me out.” His words are clear but the little fingers he curls into the edge of the blanket are guilty and pleading. Taemin looks at him for a silent moment before snorting and shaking his head.

“Nice excuse,” he mumbles, wiggling to get comfortable and turning his desk lamp off. He’ll wake up early tomorrow, make some honey lemon tea or something for Kibum to sip throughout the day, and make him take more medicine before they leave. At the very least.

“Oh my god. Finally.” Taemin looks up from the manual of the game he bought earlier at Jonghyun’s voice. His friend is hopping off of the low wall and stretching, his usual wide smile back on his face as he watches his sister’s van putt into the dark parking lot of the mall. Taemin grins. Good. Jonghyun had been overhyping his hunger for the past, like, ten minutes. It stopped being funny after three. He tosses his game back into his bag while almost everyone else in their little mall group stands up as well: Amber, Yeri, Krystal, Sooyoung, Other Jonghyun. Kibum stays on the wall, but scoots closer to Taemin now that they’re the only two left.

“See you guys Monday,” he says, waving big at all of them. Taemin nods, waving small.

“You sure you two don’t wanna come?” Jonghyun asks, opening the back door so the others can climb in. “We’re going to get dinner at McDonald’s.” He wiggles his eyebrows invitingly. Taemin snorts.

“We’re leaving with my bro when he gets off work,” he says. “We’re gonna get free leftover cinnamon rolls.” They’ll be cold and kind of stale, but still. Free. And he can smother his in the free leftover glaze packets also. Kibum nods easily next to him with an agreeing hum. Jonghyun shrugs, hopping into the passenger seat himself.

“Alright, then,” he says. “Later.” He shuts the door and Taemin waves again as everyone else waves back until they’re out of the parking lot. Then he stretches his arms himself, yawning into his elbow. “Wanna go sit in Hollister until my bro calls?” he asks Kibum. Taesun’s shift doesn’t end for another forty minutes and he can’t take a nap out here in the cold. Kibum hops off of the wall and hikes his bag more over his shoulder.

“Actually, I wanted to go to Target for a little bit,” he says. Taemin blinks.

“Why Target?” he asks. “You go to Target for like. Toothpaste and cotton balls and--oh.” He rubs his nose as he realizes that that is exactly why Kibum wants and needs to go to Target. “Okay,” he says simply. He doesn’t want to draw attention to the fact that he had to ask such an obvious question. Kibum seems to share his sentiment, because he acts like Taemin didn’t even say anything other than “okay.” He flashes Taemin his regular smile and tugs him back into the mall, the only indication that his pride took a hit in the way he clutches the strap of his bag more tightly than usual.

Taemin is hit with that wave of productivity he always gets when he walks into Target as soon as he steps over the threshold. He guesses that’s what happens when he usually only comes here to get school supplies and cheap bodywash. He scoots over to the little bins of dollar things, inspecting the little toys and pens. Kibum comes over while Taemin is inspecting a pretty cute set of pink nail files. He shows Kibum the box; after a moment of consideration, Kibum takes it and tosses it in his basket.

When they set off deeper into the store, Taemin sticks to Kibum’s side and lets him lead. He doesn’t know where anything is in here; half the time he gets lost at the smaller target by their school. Kibum wanders to the hygiene aisle first. He walks down the shelves, checking a list on his phone every so often and lowkey squinting at price tags. Taemin shuffles along behind him as he collects an assortment of things: powdered shampoo, floss, deodorant, baby powder, an eyeliner pencil of a brand that Taemin remembers him scoffing at before. He swats Kibum’s hand away from a bag of cotton balls and tosses a bag of cotton rounds in his basket instead.

“There are more in there and two sides each, like, doubles it for the same price,” he shrugs. “Also I see coupons for them all the time.” Kibum hums vaguely in thanks and tugs him to the food aisles next. There he gets little packets of powdered emonade and ramen, and then Taemin loses track of him for a few minutes because he spots a section of his favorite chips and immediately zooms over there to inspect them all. His dad always says they got discontinued. He’s such a fucking liar. Taemin grabs three bags and hugs them to his chest protectively before he realizes that Kibum has wandered off without him.

He powerwalks passed the aisles in search of his friend; he finds him in the laundry section and skids to a halt. Aha. Kibum gives him the most judgemental look when he oh-so-casually tips his chips into the basket but doesn’t comment. Instead, he frowns between two boxes.

“What do you think, Generic One or Generic Two?” he asks. He holds up the boxes to show Taemin the different laundry detergents. Taemin looks between them slowly, and then at the box of fabric softeners in the basket. This seems… not right.

“I… have a laundry machine,” he says slowly. Kibum’s next breath catches such a small amount that if Taemin didn’t know him as well as he did he wouldn't have caught it.

“Yes, I am aware of that,” Kibum says. “Which one?” he wiggles the boxes again; Taemin reaches inside and picks up the fabric softeners to read the back.

“And you’re leaving most of your clothes at my place anyway,” he says. “I can--”

“No, I don’t--need you to,” Kibum says shortly. Taemin looks up into his eyes.

“It’s like five dollars for one load at the laundromat,” he says quietly. “Plus how much it takes to dry. Plus gas to get there.”

“I know that,” Kibum says. “Just--” he reaches for the fabric softeners but Taemin jerks them out of reach.

“You can use mine,” he says firmly.

“No, Taemin, I don’t--fucking--just let me do this on my own, I don’t need--”

“Kibum,” Taemin says. He tosses the box onto a random shelf and puts his hands on Kibum’s shoulders. “I get it.”

“You don’t know--”

“I understand the concept,” Taemin says. Yeah, he doesn’t know from firsthand experience, but he knows his friend. “I know you’re trying to do this as much on your own as possible. I know you’re trying to prove your parents wrong even though you haven’t even seen them since it happened. I know you feel guilty getting so much from me already. I know you don’t want to ask for more help.” He slides his hands down to hold Kibum’s wrists. Kibum is glaring at him, jaw clenched. Taemin keeps going. “I know that you don’t technically need me to do this for you. But, Kibum. I want to help you. Let me do this for you.” He gently tugs the boxes out of Kibum’s hands and puts them back on the shelves as well. “Please,” he adds. “Swallow your pride for this one thing and wash your dirty ass boxers at my place.”

Kibum is taking slow, heavy breaths through his nose as he glares at Taemin. If this were any other time, Taemin would be extremely fucking intimidated. Now, he holds Kibum’s gaze evenly for so long that people would start to think they were weird, if there was actually anyone in the laundry section of a mall Target at 8:30 on a Friday. It’s a long, long time until Kibum releases a heavy breath through his mouth and tugs his wrists away from Taemin’s hands.

“You say that like you think I have any pride left,” he snaps. Taemin sighs and rubs his hand over the back of his neck.

“Well, just because you don’t think…,” he mumbles back. “I can’t even make myself a real breakfast in the morning and your grades are better than mine.” He’ll be every ounce of Kibum’s pride if he needs it, but he knows Kibum has pride left. Just because it’s buried under a mountain of stress it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Kibum shakes his head, but he snatches up the detergent and dryer sheets and returns them to their right shelves.

“I’m just agreeing with you because I don’t want to start fucking crying in the middle of a Target,” Kibum tells him as he grabs his sleeve to yank him to the next aisle. Taemin shrugs. They’ll talk more and he’ll admit that he’s grateful and Taemin will apologize for putting him on the spot like that in a few days or so. They’ll be good.

“My bro has debate club on Wednesdays,” he says. “And you know my parents don’t come home until late. You can come over then.”

“Fine,” Kibum says.

24 Hours with a 2019 Volkswagen Passat R-Line.

I am no stranger to the rental desk, some of my friends and colleagues think I am extremely strange because I randomly like to rent cars for longer road trips, and since my Explorer is old and tired its been retired to city only duty, anything inside of my AAA towing range is fair game.

Whenever I need to go visit family across the state, or plan a road trip I now just rent a full size car through Avis, the company I work for offers a significant discount code that can be used for work or personal, so I end up with a full size for under $30/day anywhere in the world. Partner this to a $30 coupon code I also happened to get from Avis last year, and I ended up with the option of renting a full size car for $3.14 for the day (taxes and fees). Who wouldn't?

Normally, I rent from airports, but there happens to be a hire desk down the street from my workplace, so I set a reservation on a Friday afternoon and dropped by Sunday morning. There were two people on line in front of me, and the single gentleman behind the desk did an excellent job of addressing everybody in order and making sure he knew what was going on. While I waited I surveyed the parking lot for every full size car they had, I have learned if I know what they have on the lot, its easier to schoomze my way into the car of my choice, and in a few cases have gotten some upgrades. On this particular day there was a 2017 Toyota Camry, a 2018 Nissan Altima, and a 2019 Volkswagen Passat R-Line. Now, I have rented a Passat before, and wrote about it extensively on a road trip to Yosemite and back on one tank of fuel when I was living in Northern California for a summer. But I hadn't tried out the R-Line before, and this model had a new engine for this year, or I should say its actually a de-tuned carry over of the 2.0T Found in pretty much everything VAG makes.

This new engine makes 174 Horsepower and and 184 Ft-lbs of torque. Initially when I picked the car up I assumed it had come with the old 1.8T that I already had experience with, but after a very short amount of driving I felt a significant difference in behavior.

The old 1.8T had tons of torque down low, and a very mute dead spot that was actually very hard to catch in most situations, the torque was great for anything below about 5000 RPM, but it started running out of puff beyond this. This new 2.0T unit had a completely opposite personality. There is a significant dead spot between 2000 and 3000 RPM that when taking off in a hurry actually made for a noticeable delay in power, then it all rushes in at 3000, revs consistently till 5000, then it takes off again up to redline.

This is very out of character for any VAG product I have experienced in the recent past, almost every car I have driven has consistent torque and power bands with only a short flat spot at low RPM because of the turbocharger spooling, this new engine feels peaky, it feels like it has a personality.

Partner this to the old 6 speed auto that VW has used for over a decade, the R-Line package doesn't change much about the performance of the car, it does offer larger 19 inch wheels with fatter tires, a body appearance package with Piano black and chrome grills, body cladding, an interior tech package with CarPlay and Android Auto, along with something that surprised me; Adaptive cruise control. This I had never had experience with, so I was excited to try it out.

The 6 speed auto seems to be more lazy than I remember, I recall with an old 1.4T Jetta and the 1.8T Passat I had rented, there was very little delay with tiptronic shifts, and even though the R-Line Passat ads the GTI style steering wheel with paddle shifters, the upshifts seem much more delayed, especially 1 to 2, I could feel a significant window when the gear would disengage, then the next would engage, but this would only happen in tip-tronic mode, if I put it in sport and let it shift automatically it was damned near as quick as a DSG, which I felt was odd.

I drove the Passat 300 miles to visit family, and on 87 octane fuel it achieved an average of 33 MPG. I expected more as the 1.8T model I had rented I was able to do 800 miles round trip on one tank of fuel, and averaged 42 MPG, mind you I was driving in Northern California, so I had a lot more hills, and lower speed back roads to help out with my average, but I wasn't hyper mileing in either car. the 2.0T seems to be just as quick, but less fuel efficient, also this is with winter fuel, so additives may be effecting averages as well. Steering feel was numb when going slowly and very sharp when going fast, typical of VW electric power steering.

The adaptive cruise control was weird at first, there is 6 settings for distance and a setting for speed, so far as I could tell if I was going faster than the car in front of me, it would catch up to the car, leave a significant distance between myself and the next car, and match its speed identically. in a few situations I could feel the brakes automatically engage as well when the car in front of me would significantly slow down. At first it was discomforting, then it became completely 2nd nature, it completely disarmed me from worrying about what the car in front of me was doing. So I started having to be cognizant to make a pass when possible so I didn't turn my brain off.

The thing I liked was that as soon as I turned my indicator on and tried to lane change, the ACC would see a free lane and would start accelerating back to my preset speed as soon as I started the lane change. No harsh downshifts, no jerkiness, just smooth power.

The seats felt identical to every modern VAG product, dating back to my old 2010 Jetta, sitting down in it felt like I was back in my old VW, very supportive of every part of my back, legs and buttocks, a long journey could easily be done in them, and the back seat was enormous.

My biggest qualm cam in the form of the trunk, I needed to do a grocery store run prior to my road trip, and I had a few garbage bags filled with bottles and cans. The trunk was huge, but it was damned near impossible to stuff the garbage bags in the opening to the trunk, and I couldn't help but think "this car would be perfect if it were a wagon" Why offer such a huge trunk if you have such a limitation of what can go into the opening?

Overall, this car is a solid 8/10 in terms of daily driver status, it was quick enough to have fun it, offered plenty of room for passengers front and back with comfortable seating surfaces, acceptable fuel economy and performance, a refined and smooth/quiet engine, and had all of the perfect modern features and ergonomics one might want in any modern car. The unfortunate part about this is that the Passat is a very handsome and conservative car, it has aged quite gracefully but it is overdue for a refresh, and it doesn't feel like that is going to happen any time soon.

Experiences

This post will probably be very unorganized and maybe a bit hard to read, but it's more focused on keeping some thoughts and memories then people reading it.

All of the following themes are too short for a whole Post (I think so, at least) but I still want to include them in this blog.

Military

A few days ago I met the first boy in my age, who wanted to be a soldier when growing up. Before I had never met somebody with the dream job of being a soldier, or at least nobody told me about it, if they wanted to be a soldier.

In Korea between the ages of twenty and thirty as a man, you have to work somewhere around two years in the military, but women can also go to the military. The military is very present in the streets. Not with guns or something else threatening, or at least I've never felt threatened by any of the soldiers I’ve seen and met, but you always see young men in uniform walking around on their day off.

To come back to the boy I met… I asked him why he wanted to work as a soldier and he told me that if you want to have a safe salary and a safe job you should work for the military. In Korea the Job market is very competitive, as far as I've noticed, because grades and education are so highly valued, there are a lot of very skilled people ending up in positions where they don't live up to their potential. Not at all. I that regard I can understand him quite well, but I didn’t get the chance to ask him about his views about a soldiers potential duty to kill people. The language barrier was unfortunately too high, but maybe I’ll meet him again when I speak Korean better.

German culture

I've noticed that if you are in a different country you not only learn about the country but also a lot about the country you are from.

Here are a few things I've learned about Germany so far, while being in Korea:

1. The handshake you have with someone carries a lot of information about the respect, the interest and the opinion of each other.

I've been to a dinner with my guest mother and some of her former colleagues (my guest mother works in a charity organization, I don't know if on a volunteering basis, or if she gets paid.). But on that dinner, had to give a lot of handshakes and bows and when I wanted to shake the hand of one guy, instead of giving me his hand, he did the handshake with his pinky. I instantly noticed, how disrespected I felt, even though before I had never thought that a handshake would show respect. Over the evening I noticed in myself, that I really felt like I didn't like the guy, even though I have never really spoken to him. In the middle of the dinner, I thought to myself that it probably wasn't his intention to disrespect me, but I still noticed that even after that I couldn’t look over it and still disliked him. Another thing I noticed that is transported in a handshake is whether the person you are about to greet is interested in you or not. I think whoever stretches out his hand at first is the one, more interested in greeting and getting to know the other person.

2. Germans don't really have national pride, but more (if at all) an appreciation for the institutions around them. We don't hang Germany flags in our classrooms. Here in Korea above every blackboard, there is a small, framed Korean flag. We don't hang Germany flags in the public. In Korea, you have Korean flags on the side of the highways. Not only a bit but every ten meters another one. Sometimes after our Korean classes Maja, Ainhoa and I go to an old market in Guri. In the ceiling of the building is a huge Korean flag, and on the pillars holding the roof, on each one is another smaller flag.

3. Germany is unbelievably ordered. I think I mentioned that in a different post already, but Korea seems to me like a prototype, that is constantly being worked on to have more features or newer technology. The buildings seem between 50 and 2 Years old, same thing with the advertising-signs on them. The stores themselves are one old and crappy store beneath a new and totally tidy store. It's really hard to describe. And the same goes for the people. On one hand you have people that seem completely “unmodern” and on the other hand, you have students in their twenties running around with their new iPhone X. It's really a lot of contrast.

Traffic

The traffic rules are a lot looser than in Germany. And they are also very different, for example, you can regularly just do a 180 degrees turn. For the delivery services, they don't apply at all, I feel like. They just drive over the sidewalk, red traffic lights and nobody seems to care. It's so different than the first few times I drove with my guest mother I was pretty worried, especially because a lot of the Koreans just use their smartphones while going 40 km/h. They seem to still have control of the situation, but sometimes its a bit worrying. There are also a lot more speed bumps and other stuff to make the drivers drive slower. Also, the drivers use the (i don't know the proper name) red triangle light, that makes all lights at the same time blink. They use that light so often. The cars driving on the road are also completely different to Germany. There I feel like Audi, VW, and other German brands are just normal. Here you have basically only Hyundai and KIA. And some other brands, that I've never seen in Germany.

The usage of English

English gets used pretty extensively and I feel like its seen as a sign of “Westernness”. And if they use English it's in often very weird context and oftentimes it doesn't make sense or is just ridiculous.

Some examples:

1. When you walk into a Lotteria, which is a Korean burger store, you see their advertisement which says: “scientifically the best burger you will ever eat.” But not only that is a bit weird, over the kitchen they don't have something like “kitchen”, no, they have a huge sign saying “Burger Labrotary”.

2. On a lot of t-shirts, there is stuff printed that doesn't make any sense at all. There are literally shirts, pullovers, and bags full of random words.

3. I once visited a noodle restaurant with my guest parents and on one wall there was some sort of collage with random words making up a teapot. It was a bit weird but some of them had a connection to noodles or something like that, but there were also totally unrelated words.

Very reserved in public

Yesterday I went to Seoul with Maja and Ainhoa, because we had to attend a small meeting with some other Rotary-exchange students. It was a meeting concerning a Busan-trip we’ll have next month. Anyways, on our way back we drove with the subway. The subway we were in was like most subways. You have two opposing benches and in the middle, there is room for people to walk through.

On the opposite side there was one old man standing at the exit, the on the Bench there were two middle-aged women who were looking at one smartphone and quietly talking to each other. Besides them, a man in a suit, also between forty-five and sixty and then on the far left a couple in their twenties. On our bench, there were on the far left two women, who I didn't really pay any attention to in the whole situation. Then in pretty much the middle, there was one seat between me and the women on my left, I was sitting, to my left Ainhoa, then Maja and finally on the far right a man, about thirty years old.

At one point the man on the right of our bench started ranting and insulting the people sitting in front of us. I didn't really understand what he was saying. I only understood that he was saying something about their smartphones, I'm guessing that he wanted them to put them away and pay attention to him. It was a very strange experience. He started screaming and raging and literally, nobody reacted. Not even in the slightest. They were dodging eye contact and nobody talked to him. The women kept on looking at their smartphone and talked at exactly the same paste and noise level as before. The Couple ignored him as well, only the businessman seemed a bit tense, but he didn't engage into any. The man started to rage so much that Maja switched seats and sat down beside me, but that was pretty much the only reaction he got. Until the young man on the left, who was with his girlfriend said, that he should be quiet, he would be very noisy. Then the man jumped up with his fist ready to punch and apparently threatened the man. He stayed very calm and later Maja and Ainhoa told me that he was saying something along the ways of “I dear you”, or “Try it”. After he had said that the raging man switched seats and got out of the train at the next station. But before he left the train I saw him, I'm guessing apologizing to a man near the exit.

It was a very strange situation. First of all, it was the first time I felt threatened in Korea so far and the first time I felt like I was in danger. But it was also an interesting experience because you could see how everyone realized, that the man was about to fight someone, but everyone stayed extremely focused on whatever they were doing that the moment. The old man near the exit just stared along the train, the two women kept looking at their phone, the businessman listened to music and stared at his feet, the couple kept whispering to each other. It was a very strange atmosphere because it was so tense and everyone tried to not show, that they were feeling that as well.

I didn't focus on how everyone reacted when the man was jumping up, because I was so focused on him, and whether or not they would start to fight, but when I switched my focus again, nobody had really changed.

This situation showed me once more, how much volume and body language really can communicate. And that to make somebody feel fear of something like that you don't need to have the right sentence, it's enough if you just show that you are ready to just punch the shit out of your opponent.

But probably more interesting than that was how clear it became in that particular situation, how focused most Koreans are to not disturb, not be noticeable and not engage in confrontation. Of course, there are always exceptions and I think that guy was one of those, but nobody tried to interrupt him or something like that until it was nearly too late. And it also showed to me that “minding your own business” is held very high in Korea.

All in all, I’d say, that I'm glad I was in that subways. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have gotten such a clear presentation of those parts of the Korean culture.

“Can you tell me 10 things you could do with a pencil other than write?”

The answers included some basic responses such as erasing, but I was really surprised by some of the other responses. One of the candidates we ended up hiring said A tool to pick the earwax out of your headphones after you’ve used them which I thought was so honest and funny (come on, most of us have done it!). It’s a nice break from traditional accounting questions and also shows how well candidates can think on their feet.

“If I had an airplane full of jelly beans and I wanted you to get them all out, but in a very sanitary way so I could still eat them, what would you do? You have 24 hours to do this, but you have unlimited funds.”

My response was that I would hire 2 cranes and put one on each side of the plane. I’d buy big inflatable pools and put them under each exit on the plane. I’d then connect the left crane to the plane’s left wing, and tip it up, making the jelly beans fall into the pools. I’d repeat the same process with the right crane and wing. There would be some jelly beans left, so I’d then hire a crew, in full hazmat outfits (just to drive the sanitary point home), to clean up the rest of the jelly beans.

“Do you personally change the oil in your car?”

Years ago, after completing a business-related master’s degree, I interviewed for a supervisory position at a firm that specialized in data entry jobs for nearby auto-parts manufacturers who required quick turnarounds. I was questioned in rapid-fire fashion by a team of three people — and questions came so fast that I had little time to compose my answers. Suddenly — out of the blue — a panel-member asked this question.

Since all of the previous questions had asked about my job-related supervisory experience, my college business courses, my personal management style, or how I would handle a contrived employee problem, I was definitely caught off guard. Trying to gain a few seconds think about how to answer, I asked them a question: What does changing my own motor oil have to do with this management position?

They told me that since quick turnaround on their data entry jobs was critical to meeting their clients’ requirements, they couldn’t afford to have much down-time in their facility. So when there were problems with any of their data-entry equipment, supervisors were supposed to try to resolve the issue without calling the vendor for repairs (and waiting for a field technician who might not arrive for hours). For that reason, they only wanted to hire supervisors who weren’t afraid to get dirty fixing things. (Personally, I thought there were surely better ways to determine my mechanical aptitude!)

Anyway, I told them that I personally did most of the repairs necessary to keep my aging 1973 VW Beetle roadworthy, and I was offered the job. However, since I disliked my interview “treatment” and thought it might be indicative of their organization’s management culture (and had three other interviews lined up), I turned down their offer on the spot.

I was applying to work as an English teacher for a nonprofit in the education industry and was being interviewed by the Program Director. In the interview, he asked [this] question.

It really caught me off guard! I responded that I would be a refrigerator because I’m a chill person who’s usually stuffed with food. It was a goofy answer, but the interviewer laughed and mentioned that he liked my creativity. I ended up landing the position!

People answering in positive are most likely to promote negative competition, a toxic work culture while detesting collaboration and teamwork. Answering in negative, on the other hand, is the sign of an individual who believes in fairness and giving credit to the deserving people.

“What if you find out your boss is having an affair with a colleague?”

Reason for Asking: We asked this to check how efficiently can a person demarcate personal and professional boundaries. While one person might look to extract personal benefits in this case, the other person might work as usual with negligible impact on working relationships. It’s an excellent question, if you are to judge a candidate on “professional ethics” and the ability to retain “confidential” information in their head. However, it’s important to check the reasoning behind the answer to arrive at a conclusion.

Typical Responses: The question evoked wild responses. However, we preferred candidates who demonstrated a strong work ethics and chose to step out from overlapping personal and professional lives. The initial premise was to choose candidates who stay away from grapevine and fostering rumors at workplace, ultimately leading to a toxic work culture.

“If a plane was filled with Skittles and you had to empty it as fast as you can, how would you do it?”

My answer: It depends on the kind of plane. If it were one of the planes people go skydiving out of, it’d be easy to just fly the plane, and open the hatch to let the skittles fall out. If that didn’t get them all out, I’d use a broom, and just sweep the rest out.

Context: This was for a position as a Marketing Assistant at a Financial Institution and was asked by the VP of Marketing.*

“How do you make an omelet?”

My answer: You start by getting the tools: a pan, a stove, and a spatula. Then you take out the ingredients: 3 eggs, oil/butter, cheese, chopped bell peppers, chopped mushrooms, and chopped bacon (Of course these ingredients are optional and interchangeable). Place the pan on the stove, and the butter/oil in the pan. Turn on the stove to medium heat and allow the butter/oil to get hot. In a separate bowl, crack open the eggs, and whisk them together until they get fluffy. Pour the eggs into the pan, and add the ingredients. Allow the eggs to cook through and slide the omelet off of the pan onto a plate, folding it as it slides down.

Context: This was for a position as a Content Writer for a small business and was asked by the Founder and CEO.*

I was interviewing for a job at GNC, the health nutrition store, as a simple associate to work the registers. The interviewer was the manager of this specific location in a small town. The interview was going fine, all of the normal questions asked, and then she asks that question.

WHAT. Is that even possible? I fumbled over my words for a couple minutes and then simply said – I’m so sorry, I really don’t know how to answer that question. She then moved away from the question, so I said – What’s the answer you were looking for? How would you answer that? and she responded with I don’t know. THEN WHY EVEN ASK THE QUESTION?

As our team have scaled I have conducted over 50 interviews in the last three months and I recently inserted [this] tricky question just to see what our job candidates would say. The question comes from the book Zero to One by Peter Thiel.

The question shows you if person answering the question has engage in any sort of deep thought and also about how they approach business and life in general. There really is no right answer to the question moreover it just really shows you what level of thinking the person answering it is operating at. This is highly valuable if determining the candidate is an A, B , or C player.

I gave the attending ER doctor all information including I had drank beer an hour before I got there. OK, now, For the 16 hours at the hospital and the multiple blood tests, everybody including the Dr's said everything looked good! and the Dr. that discharged me explained to my wife in detail about my blood work, said things were fine. So, why would my CHP (Capital Health Plan) health insurance company be contacting my primary? Especially about alcoholism counseling, this has NEVER been an issue in the past! I'm so upset! The federal government is not going to provide funding for private insurance. The second reason is it's common knowledge that the best Universities in the U.S. are private schools such as Duke, Stanford, and the Ivy League. These universities fill most of the highest paying jobs in the country. Some jobs even go as far as to require a degree from one of these schools (Stock Brokers on NYC Stock Exchange.) These highly paid graduates can donate larger amounts of money back to their respective colleges than the average Joe who graduated from a generic state funded university. No one is going to donate money to the private insurance companies. We can't even get all the people who qualify for insurance to sign up and that's the problem! About a year ago my husband and I sold a car. We went through the usual channels with dealing with the plates, calling the insurance company and so on. Well today we got our yearly insurance cards in the mail and didn't recognize one of the cars they had given us a card for so I went over the statement. It turns out they have been billing us for insurance on a car we sold over a year ago. We never really noticed how much we should be paying in insurance for our cars and only get our statement once a year with these cars. We only pay $1504 a year for what we thought was two cars and I had assumed that was pretty good. In fact we were paying for three cars and an extra $663 a year on the car we sold. I haven't contacted the insurance company yet but my question is what are my options here? Will they give us the money back for the year we payed on a car we legally sold and what do they need, if any, proof of that?
