bianca pisses me off so much. i've had to help raise 2 children in this goddamn house, and not once did i ever think to leave them with a group of strangers that seem like good people. i would sooner loose a fucking limb then leave them with people i havent even known for a full day. you can say what you want, but i still think it's bullshit that bianca left nico like that.

Things about Tower of Nero that I want to highlight to remember them forever:

Lu being an absolute badass woman, I just love her too much

Piper McClean being canon wlw, she was actually kissing another girl, we really fell in love in october

Chaos being canonically female (just chaos being mentioned as a deity rather than what's below tartarus)

nobody DIED, like no one on the good side at least?? yes plenty of beings have died throughout TOA, but nobody died in TON?? so many died in TLO and BOO, I expected to mourn someone and I didn't have too??! it made me so happy

solangelo. that's it. solangelo makes me happy.

will being incredibly supportive of nico, and instead of stopping him, going with him on dangerous adventures because he doesn't want to leave him alone. also them treating Nico's PTSD for what it is

WILL SOLACE CANONICALLY GLOWS IN THE DARK. HE'S A GLOWSTICK BABY.

also will just appearing at the gates of the throne room, glowing in rage because someone touched his boyfriend (and tried to kill his dad), and him just marching through everyone (everyone else letting him), just to pick up his hurt precious boyfriend and take care of him.

meg McCaffrey got her happy ending. she's baby, she deserves her family and her happy ending. also Lu being the mother and the 12 children being siblings?? that's one hell of a way to tell nero to fuck off and right his mistakes. we love meg.

dionysus being the best olympian after apollo. the duo content we needed, and now will never get

nico mentioning bob and how he wants to go look for him, because he can still be in tartarus

rachel still being a Total badass and hitting people in the eye with her blue hairbrush thus being iconic

meg acting as lester's anchor and only reason why he didn't let go of the ledge, not falling into chaos, is top tier 'reasons why I cried reading', because if you think about it, Meg is the first ever friend apollo ever had, and them being best friends is everything to me

also apollo choosing to go looking as lester rather than apollo because lester feels like home is on top tier 'reasons why I cried reading' too

again, the only thing apollo did in the end (once he was god again) that could be described as 'godly' was be in several places at once, fly his chariot, and get meg her unicorn

but apollo shooting fucking fire out of his hands is crazy asf, it was so cool. he really got amazing godly powers this book.

rick being bold enough to showcase abusive parenting knowing that a huge porcentage of his readers are minors, helping many realize that they could be in abusive households, and giving them a tool to reach out for help

apollo defeating nero was so satisfactory, because you realize in the end, that nero wasn't really a monster, he was monstrous, but still very much human (if only with some godly power), and pretty useless once he couldn't hide behind props and weapons, his being wasn't powerful, he was just under layers of protection

the jackson/blofis scene was so warm and loving, they really are willing to put their family in danger, baby estelle in danger, to help 'percy's friends' even tho she knew percy didn't like apollo, but she still takes in everyone who needs help, and paul being a loving and accepting husband

sally working on her SECOND novel, she really is having her best life

none of the big heroes from other series having protagonism, besides nico and will, instead giving the other kids from camp halfblood their chance to show they're just as worthy as the "heroes of olympus"

(still I would have loved to see a scene with everyone else, like the heroes of olympus guys, fighting together one last time, just for nostalgia's sake - I legit hoped to see percy and annabeth arriving with chiron in triumvirate tower, but yeah)

the arrow of dodona may have been a dumb, cringey, and slightly ridiculous thing at first, and I personally rolled my eyes everytime it said anything, but it knew what would happen from the start, and without its sacrifice, apollo would have achieved nothing. we stan one arrow

nico wearing a white cowboy hat. idky but it makes my heart swell with joy. he a gay cowboy

y'all know I love Apollo's arch, and I just gotta point this out. his trials, his time as lester, started with him falling to earth, and ended with him getting up after purposely throwing himself off the earth, towards tartarus, almost falling to chaos. that's really clever writing.

the olympians watching over him, and some actually being concerned for him rather than his progress.

poseidon not really giving a fuck about the world or council meetings anymore because percy's not there anymore

athena being the only one apart from artemis who trusted apollo could do it makes me warm fsr

lester deciding that the best way to retell his adventures is by singing is hilarious to me, he really thinks it'll solve everything

Grover not telling percy and annabeth jason died seems so funny to me, he really said "nah it doesn't matter much, field trip, yes"

"hey man" my heart broke in twenty million pieces. like I don't know where I expected to see jason. but that wasn't it. and it hurt me as much as it hurt apollo man.

(also I kinda hoped we would see nico summon his spirit or smth, but I'm actually happy nico realized that jason went by his own choice, and he was in peace, so he decided not to summon him, because it was alright. that hurt too)

kinda love how lester passes out after literally every battle. it reminds you that even tho he's apollo, his body isn't. I'm sure we all would pass out too if we did a quarter of what lester did in the span of 4 days. his body isn't made to endure that, it doesn't even have a halfblood endurance, it's a weak mortal body

the trogs were fucking hilarious. their screeches and grrs, idk there's something ridiculous and so childish about them, it's so fun

really happy that apollo never had a /real/ love interest (reyna doesn't count), cause that wasn't what his story was about. instead he got to make so many friends, and have quality time with them and his children, it's amazing

apollo being thankful people were telling him he'd grown, and was more human, because he realized that was the best thing he could have learned from his time as a mortal

also him saying fuck you man to zeus and his speech, like "no asshole dad, I did learn, I'm not going to see this as punishment, it was a great time in which bad things happened but I enjoyed it." yes, we love apollo not letting zeus win

getting to see what everyone will do now. nico and will figuring out rachel's prophecy, probs saving bob. rachel living her best life away from her parents. leo doing what leo does, always helping those who have no one else. the hunters' open storyline about this fox, possibly hinting at content? piper settling down in a quiet life is what she deserves tbh, she's earned quiet life with a cute gf, wish her the best. Frank and hazel being the best praetors, and I bet they will continue to be so. And annabeth and percy, who chose their happiness over all, at last

kinda wish we got to see someone still really miss jason after apollo becomes god again tho lmao like apollo missed jason more than the others, nico and piper being the exception. I mean, leo is fine and dandy, hazel and frank are okay, percy and annabeth are done mourning... I just we got to see any of them really mourning, rather than reading they mourned. it would have made it feel more emotional

the last conversation and the last words in general. "the sun always comes back" and "we're friends now. call on me. I'll be there for you" that shit got me sobbing my heart out. rick really managed to do right by the books and end it like he should have, unlike BOO. he took what made TLO good and used a similar formula. it's very different from "and for once I didn't look back", but it still fills you with warmth and the feeling that even though it's over, it's okay.

I'm just really emotional, this is all I can think about, but you bet I'm gonna add more when I remember

Tower of Nero (spoilers)

Okay. Wow. That was an emotional rollercoaster. Just a few things I loved (and a few things I really didn’t)

Meg and Apollo’s relationship never ceases to amaze me with its pureness

I’m so proud of Meg. Over the series she’s become a favorite of mine (maybe not a Percy favorite, but a favorite), and I’m in love with her character development. Subtle but powerful

On that note, APOLLO’S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IS ASTOUNDING

There were several times throughout the book (one chapter in particular but I can’t remember which) where I just had to close it and breathe. This boy became a hero somewhere between book one and five

I loved the individual Rachel-Will-Nico content, that was beautiful. I have a ton of respect for Will Solace as a character, and Rachel deserved a spotlight in this series, and Nico just hhhh. You know

I really like the little reminders and implications that the big three kids are still top notch. That was a big deal in PJO and I really like that in TOA whenever a big three kid shows up, it’s a big deal. They’re powerful. And boy, did Nico represent in this book

Blue. Plastic. Hairbrush.

BOB?!?!

I also loved the little walk backward through memory lane. It wasn’t much but little things. The Chariot of Damnation. The hairbrush. The fall to Tartarus. All the bright-eyed new campers at Camp Half-Blood, my heart really couldn’t take that. All the mentions of Kronos and the Battle of Manhattan

You guys caught those references to the Kanes and Magnus Chase, right? I may have screeched

Hera?? Am I? Stanning you???

Nero is absolutely disgusting, I hate his guts

The Arrow of Dodona, I’m sobbing

Estelle!! (You knew I’d get there eventually). Rolling on the floor, I am so ride-or-die for that baby, but I am upset that we didn’t get to have an actual scene with Percy and her together

I love the Jackson/Blofis household though, and I was dished another huge dose of respect for Paul Blofis. He’s gonna be a great dad

“You’re a doofus sometimes, Valdez, but you’ve got a heart of Imperial gold.” I can’t think of a better way to close Leo’s story

I really like Styx letting Apollo live? Just something about that moment seems very cool to me

And the way that section ended. That last line about him pulling himself up. Chills

Actually, that entire fight with Python right up till the end was super beautifully written

Here’s the most honest thing - Percy Jackson. I wanted to see more of him, I always do, and Annabeth too. I burst into tears when she said, “Architecture.” I understand Rick’s reasoning, and I’m glad they got to go on that road trip with Grover, they all needed that. But in this last book, I just. Really wanted to see him beat up some monsters one last time

The idea of Percy and Annabeth getting to be at Camp Jupiter, and Percy hanging out with Frank and Hazel again, they’re gonna have fun

Seeing Jason. Gosh, I was crying my eyes out. I’ve missed him so much

I appreciate Dionysus

I appreciate Meg getting to go home

I love Apollo with all my heart

And I love Percy Jackson more than words can describe

oh my gods u guys

i just finished tower of nero like a week or two weeks ago. i had felt many emotions.

first off nico di angelo. sweet baby boy. my heart is breaking just thinking about him. HE WAS A WRECK U GUYS IM SOBBINg. and will 'supportive boyfriend' solace. where can i get me one of those? their love is amazing. istg i will start crying. nico keeps losing people wtf. i'm so glad he has will to help him get through his stuff. will probably has som problems that aren't just nico's problems that wasn't mentioned in the books and i'd bet all the money in my wallet (which isnt much but yeah) that nico would also be there for will. the loyalty of that kid. they will put their life on the line for each other. they are the perfect couple.

apollo. the character arc. it's as good as zuko's character arc™. i hope he never forgets his experiences in toa. his relationship with meg is one that i stan so much. i think he doesn't really get that sibling relationship with artemis where they have to take care of each other. with them being gods and all. with meg, he really learned how to care for people close to his heart. and the people they encounter, he is exposed to the give and take value that kind people have. like em and jo. leo and calypso. grover and the dryads. camp half blood. camp jupiter. he is exposed to the oppression from those with power. istg rick's books really do be enlightening and contemporary.

meg is such as awesome character and i love how her arc expands the topic of abusive households and manipulative guardians. sometimes i wonder if she was modelled after me but all plants i touch die. anyway, it's really hard to see the truths of a situation that you're experiencing and i'm glad that meg had people to love, support and help her get through that toxic relationship.

the ending. oh my goodness the ending. the trio is back! percy-annabeth-grover road trip. we got it, guys! we're still not over jason's death, but i'm glad the characters are healing <3. piper got a girlfriend. too bad it's not me but good for her. my heart just aches for this characters. i'm so happy for them.

i have to reread to really get everything but i'll do that after exams kjshdkssjdhf.

PJO/HOO OPINIOS (or just bunch of random stuff)

*Also spoiler alert i suppose*

I didn't like Annabeth right away, it actually took me a long time to grow on her (sorry Annabeth)

I am fine with Piper but she can sometimes annoy me, like she was fine in tlh and then the moa happend and she annoyed me when Jason was talking about romans or Reyna, Piper was always so weird about it that Jason could clearly see that something is bothering her and than he had to constantly assure her that he is going to stay ( EVEN THOUGHT HE BASICALLY LEFT THE ONLY HOME HE EVER KNEW AND FRIENDS HE HAD FOR 12 YEARS AND THEY HAVE RIGHT TO KILL HIM ON SIGHT BECOUSE HE IS AN OUTLAW AND PIPER IS LIKE YOU ARE GOING TO LEAVE ME FOR REYNA LIKE ?????? GIRL HE ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE)

And then she was ok in hoh (she had like 4 chapters but they were good chapters) and in boo she redeemed herself i liked when she embraced her Aphrodite side as to say and was all about accepting all your feelings and being yourself and i really liked every Piper chapter in boo....and then toa happend and she moved on with speed unknown to men ( I'm fine with her having a girlfriend she seems happy but she moved on so fast )

Frank and Hazel deserved more love i really loved them, they are both cinnamon rolls that can and will kill you if they wanted to

I actually didn't mind when Percy turned down immortality or lost his Achilles curse

I like the idea of camp jupiter better then camp half- blood, i personally wouldn't go there because 1) i am procrastinator and incapable of being up early and 2) i would probably die there

Jason deserved better, my poor child didn't deserve THAT

I don't mind that Reyna is single, she is strong on her own (same for Thalia)

Also you can't blame her when she immediately offered Percy to be praetor and to help her, she was in desperate situation with Jason missing like 8 months and doing everything herself, and Octavian who probably materialised himself in her office every other day saying things like WHERE IS JASON or WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO REPLACE HIM or HE IS DEAD BY NOW I SHOULD BE PRAETOR

I don't blame her for offering it to Percy but i still didn't like that he was actually made praetor at the end of son ( i am weird i know )

I never understood the hate for Rachel and why was Annabeth so mean to her (i know it was because of Percy but still)

It doesn't make sense that at the end of boo Reyna and Piper are that close to eachother, when did they bond (btw i liked the scene becouse it showed Piper's growth)

But wouldn't it make more sense that Jason was there instead of Piper ( Jason and Reyna deserved one normal conversation i said what i said), or even better Piper can still be there talking with Reyna and then Jason approaches and sees them, then Piper just stands up and leaves and says you guys need to talk, which would still show her development becouse she knows that both Jason and Reyna need that talk and she now trusts Jason completely and respects Reyna and knows how much she secrfised for this war, and then at the end Jason is the one who offered Reyna to come to camp half-blood if she needs rest, wouldn't that be way more impactful becouse he knows how is it to be leader all the time, and how exosting cj can be and also he would be there ( they know eachother for 4 years i mean you have to invite your friend to visit you). AND THEN WHEN HE DIES SHE CAN REMEMBER THAT OFFER AND COME TO CHB AND HAVE THE REST SHE ALWAYS WANTED, I MEAN NICO IS THERE AND I AM SURE HE WOULD BE HAPPY TO SEE HER, AND SHE WOULD NOT JOIN THE HUNTERS (sorry people but i don't like that she just randomly desided do join hunters and was like YAY VACATION)

I don't know why people say they wanted Grover to be more in HOO , i love him too but he just wouldn't fit in there

I also don't want dark Percy, when he said he deserved to die for poisoning that godess in tartarus and when even Annabeth was scared of him it was too much for my heart ( i love angst like every other person but my heart just can't take it )

I still like that moment tho and all of tartarus even if it's pain to my heart

We stan Will in this household, he and Nico deserve to shine in solangelo book and their quest to tartarus

I don't want Bob to be rescued, if that voice Nico heard was even Bob ( sorry not sorry, i like Bob but if he got saved then his sacrefice wouldn't mean anything in HOO )

i also think this is SO evident in how the fandom + rick treat annabeth's stepmother like her dad was so clearly abusive why can't ppl extend that sympathy to her stepmom and maybe by some crazy stretch of the imagination she's being manipulated too? oh right because she's not white

This is such a major issue. I touched the stepmother narrative in the other Hera ask, but I’ll take any chances to speak about the dynamics about Mrs. Chase and Annabeth! I know some Annabeth stans are really hard on this stance on Mrs. Chase being awful but I ask you to really reconsider. What was that awful about her behavior?

The evil stepmother syndrome is a really strong and unfortunately still widely used narrative to hate on women. I’m not denying the fact that “evil” step-parents exist but with Annabeth and Mrs. Chase it’s clear that this narrative was a one-sided illusion. Of course, Annabeth went through hardships and an awful childhood as she interpreted Mrs. Chase’s ways as a direct affront on her. Annabeth was seven, a literal child. The fact that it pushed her that far that running off seemed to be a better option than staying at the house because of constant fears of reliving trauma is terrible - on her parents behalf. Annabeth thinking that way is only logical. I’m pretty sure that most of us as kids had that moment where we’d just love to pack and up and leave. Very few truly act on that.

Annabeth Chase truly had parents that failed her. Massively.

The question is: why are people putting the blame on Mrs. Chase? If you want to snap someone’s neck, then it definitely should be Frederick Chase’s! He’s the mortal parent that failed his daughter. He rejected her and treated her so terribly and unwanted that she actually fled the house. That is incredibly fucked up. Now that’s a deadbeat dad. I don’t care that that white dude is rich and a Harvard graduate. This dude should rot. Not saying that Athena is off the hook as she put both Frederick and Annabeth into this situation in the first place and she’s a terrible godly parent to have (I did a whole essay on that whew!).

I do think Mrs. Chase being not-white also does it make it easier to hate on her - she’s presented as this bitchy Asian stepmom until Percy sees a little bit more of Annabeth’s home, gets first glimpses behind the facade and notices that there’s more to this issue and that all of that roots back to a large misunderstanding and Frederick Chase being a coward of a father.

It’s time to face a truth. Something I’ve already said: Mrs. Chase isn’t Annabeth’s new mother, she’s Frederick Chase’s wife. I hope you guys get the difference. There is no obligation between Annabeth and Mrs. Chase to have a mother/daughter relationship. Yes, Mrs. Chase should be at the least civil with Annabeth and at best become a friend of hers of some sort. Or if things are really going well, be a new/third parent for Annabeth with Annabeth’s permission. Patchwork families require so much coordination and patience and time and love.

But as shitty as it sounds to hear: Mrs. Chase has smaller non-halfblood children that she has to prioritize. Could this be a bio/non-bio kid deal? Probably. Should it be? Probably not. But scared toddlers add tons of stress to a household. The entire Chase household being influenced by Devine forces and Annabeth’s scent attracting monsters as well as Annabeth going in about spiders, of course sets the ground for issues and misunderstandings at home.

But Frederick Chase as someone who knew about the godly ways should’ve intervened and set the record straight. So, again: Why is Mrs. Chase getting all the heat now? There’s no reason. At least not for me...? Percy, Annabeth, Grover, Nico, etc...these characters aren’t reliable narrators, you know? They omit, they confuse, they deflect, they downplay. They do a lot. They’re kids. They’re not as mature as Percy’s narration lets you believe. And getting everything third hand from Percy is how the reader dives into the conflict. An even smaller frame placed on an already small frame.

While I think that weaving a misunderstanding into the plot isn’t something inherently bad, I think that waiting that long for the resolution of it (wasn’t it in TTC? Annabeth spoke about her family for the first time in TLT of course), may come off as very icky. Should’ve been a resolution a book prior, but it is what it is. I mean so many things have passed in the meantime in the story telling and I don’t know how many kids think that Percy’s perspective on that matter is plausible from the get go.

So let us hopefully grow from this and Riordan’s one-dimensional narration stays buried and we give Mrs. Chase the proper chance and development that is needed.

Tower of Nero Reactions

Tower of Nero absolutely wrecked me, exactly as I knew it would, but I can now say -- without a doubt -- that Trials of Apollo is my favorite Riordan series by far. It feels like a fitting ending in many ways, a capstone to an amazing journey that started back in 2005 (not that I’ve been around quite that long, lol).

Anyway, below the cut are some of my thoughts on this last book. Emotional roller coaster is an understatement, and I am still very much processing. (Also, I will keep tagging Tower of Nero spoilers until the end of November, just fyi.)

I don’t even know where to begin. This is going to be a long post...

I’ll start with the good news: ✨💜✨💛✨NERO✨💛✨💜✨

Not even kidding, I will never shut up about Nero. Trust me, if you told past me, at the very beginning of ToA, that in 2020 I’d be stanning Nero, I wouldn’t have believed you. Nevertheless, here I am.

Obligatory shout out to Pajama Nero, the moment I knew there was no going back 💜

I actually high key appreciate how the Triumvirate’s power was handled. I assumed as much at the end of Tyrant’s Tomb, but for Commodus and Caligula’s power to consolidate in Nero was perfect.

I’m trying not to scream about Nero, I promise. He’s just? God tier. Literally. 💛

The ultimatum? Throwing a party while NY burns? Even Dionysus said Nero has panache. His interior decorating and architectural sense? Impeccable. 💜

Ngl, Luguselwa betraying Nero had me VERY nervous until he completely called them out. His entire monologue? “I’m afraid your hands have offended me.” ??? 😳

Let’s be honest: every throne room scene killed me. Every line Nero had killed me. Why is he Like That?

How Nero made himself a metaphorical Kronos? Poetic cinema.

Making Nero tear apart his own fasces? I’d noticed that Riordan included the fact that Nero committed suicide in the glossary since book 1, and,,,yeah I was scared something like this would happen. Not this. This was worse.

His death scene? Oh my gods, I was a complete mess. How dare Apollo revoke Nero’s divinity? How dare Nero be burnt by his own divine power? How dare his last moments be spent sobbing, terrified? How dare Python literally drag Nero’s essence to Delphi and absorb it? *on the verge of tears*

I’m not going to get super into this rn, because it’s complicated and I’ll start crying again, but Python being the evil behind it all? The snake playing his own game, using both Apollo and the emperors as pawns? Whatever horrific power he had over the Triumvirate, and over Nero specifically? Nero taking it upon himself (for selfish, terrible reasons, yes) to step in and make sure that Python didn’t destroy humanity? When Nero, even with all his power, was fucking terrified of Python? I-

In Other News

I’ll be nice. Good for everyone who got their happy ending. I think Apollo’s “check-ins” were written fairly well. I think his personal feelings regarding being a god again were handled well in relation to his story arc.

How Apollo addresses the reader in closing? Oof.

What hurt the most, I think, is the way Triumvirate Holdings / the Imperial Household was handled. I knew it wouldn’t be done well. It still hurts.

We get some throwaway lines about Meg maybe inheriting the tower, CHB getting the Greek fire, the Germani being “regular people” but like,,, No?

Triumvirate Holdings is the largest, most influential company on the planet. Nero directly mentions the issue this poses: “You can’t destroy bank accounts with a bow and arrows.” All of that? Just? What? Isn’t a big deal?

I refuse to believe the Germani are just peachy integrating into society.

I refuse to believe the Imperial children are just peachy potting cacti in Palm Springs.

^ All of this will get its own post, because I’ve written posts about it before that I should follow up on. I’m just Bitter.

When Dionysus said “it appears some of us do get happy endings” I Felt that.

Okay, so I’m a slut for medical dramas but I also get frustrated when there’s a lack of diversity or when queer/PoC/disabled etc characters exist solely to suffer at the hands of writers. Could you rank the current medical dramas from best to worst in terms of diversity?

HO’S UNITE!

I completely understand. Not only in the lack of diversity but also a lack of the KIND of diversity. I have a weird theory about television and often movie casts. Of course this ranking is only of the shows I watch. Worst to Best.

The Resident

The Good:

The show begins with the audience following Devon Pravesh, a Gujarati and South Asian man. He’s on of the most realistic characters considering most medical shows seem to gloss over the fact that most people in medical school as well as working practitioners look an awful lot like Devon and less like Conrad. They have the shoot-for-excellence-at-all-times Nigerian immigrant surgeon and all around bad-ass Mina Okafor, and of course The Raptor, AJ Austin who was adopted by a Chinese man and a Black American woman. The newest edition of Dr. Barrett Cain adds another bit of chocolate goodness to look at too.

The Bad:

Aside from Mina’s poorly cast mother Lynne Whitfield and the introduction of Devon’s parents the show hasn’t figured out how to weave in the different ethnicity's and backgrounds of their characters of color. No one speaks in their mother-tongue, celebrates any holidays or traditions tied to their respective cultures and religions and of course the most obvious. EVERYONE here is straight and able-bodied. And there are only TWO female leads, with most of the other recurring female characters being sent away or killed off.

The Good Doctor

The Good:

Although not the first medical drama to introduce a character with Autism it is the first to have one as the lead and his autism is a focus of the show. In the beginning there was the English born Dr. Jared Kalu, we know he comes from money and is assumed to be Asian, the actor is actually Nigerian and white, after he left the show Dr. Park was introduced. The Good Doctor has had the most Asian representation on a medical show I believe EVER in the history of prime-time television. Allegra Aoki, Dr. Aurdrey Lim, and Dr. Jackson Han round the out the Asian representation on the show. Carly Lever, Dr. Claire Browne, and Dr. Marcus Andrews are represented as black or mixed-race Black Americans. Dr. Neil Melendez is the only Latino or Hispanic character he really doesn’t lean into it. Dr. Glassman and his wife are both Jewish.

The Bad:

The Good Doctor is doing something different having an autistic character as the lead, and although Freddie Highmore is a talented actor, he isn’t autistic. Also it would’ve been even better if Shaun could’ve been Shauna. A chance was missed here by taking a look at the often under diagnosed sect of girls and women who are autistic. The show has a lot of women on it both recurring and regular but ALL of them, just like the men,are straight. And a missed opportunity too considering the actress who plays Carly has been married to a woman since 2013. Also, Carly and Claire can pass the paper bag test, NO ONE is bilingual, and if they are they don’t show it or any of the other aspects of their cultural differences it’s very “American.

Chicago Med

The Good:

Out of all the One Chicago Shows, Med has the most racially diverse cast as well as diverse recurring characters. They have four black women on the cast. April Sexton whose real surname is Suassuna is Afro-Brazilian, who speaks both Spanish and Portuguese, attends family functions based on her heritage and has even shared a few anecdotes and beliefs from her culture which also include her brother Dr. Noah Sexton. Ditto for the recurring character Dr. Isidore Latham. He has Asperger’s, is Jewish, and observes all aspects of Judaism including wearing a kippah, and sharing some Jewish based jokes. Dr. Ethan Choi is believed to be Korean and Iranian born Dominic Rains has been added to the cast as Dr. Crockett Marcel rounding out the leads of Asian descent.

The Bad:

Ethan’s ethnicity and race has only been brought up when it was being demeaned. Other than that the show leans heavily on his military background to give him depth but gives zero basis for any customs or cultural traits he probably had growing up. Nary a mention is given about Crockett’s race only his southern New Orleans heritage leaving us as an audience wondering if he’s Creole? Spicy White? No idea. Also April is Brazilian but almost exclusively speaks Spanish when not speaking English to her brother which is by far the strangest considering I have never met anyone who chooses English if they are raised in a multicultural household, and definitely not in conversation with their family members. But never Portuguese. All of these shows fail at representing Black American cultural, which leaves Maggie and Sharon with very little to share. And of course the most obvious. There are no LGBT characters on the show. None are leads and it doesn’t appear as though they are adding any or thinking about opening any new doors within the characters.

New Amsterdam

The Good

New Amsterdam does a lot of things right. My dear Vijay Kapoor who’s Indian identity is very wrapped in who he is, from his accent, to his prayers, mannerisms, and discussions of his past he isn’t just a token he’s a full character. Although the show has yet to address it Dr. Helen Sharpe who is obviously black is played by Freema Agyeman who is not so obviously half Iranian on her mothers side. But she is English and her disposition, her language and slang are represented in that regard. Lauren Bloom is a neurodivergent character with ADHD and a struggling addict. Dr. Floyd Reynolds is Black American who has Sunday dinners at his mothers. And Dr. Iggy Frome is a gay married man with 50 bajillion Pakistani children and aiming for one more. Recurring characters, Dr. Valentina Castro, Dora, and Casey are all Latino and Evie Floyd is mixed race, white and Black American. Not to mention this show has plethora of diverse peripheral characters, little people, hijabs, turbans, kippahs,everywhere, you name it you’ve probably seen it. The show has to be diverse because it’s in New York and it’s supposed to be an international hospital. The place is MASSIVE.

The Bad:

All that diversity, all the difference, cultural richness, ripe stories running amok and the entire show is centered on a cis-het white man. Not mention Casey and Dora don’t even have last names. Maybe that’s why the actress isn’t on the show anymore and is now on Emergence, New Amsterdam’s rival at that time slot.

Grey’s Anatomy

The Good

Where do you start with the longest running medical drama on television.

They’ve had it all and still do. They constantly have LGBT characters, who are shown to get hot and heavy the same as their het-counterparts. Where other shows have two men bird-kissing like they don’t even want to touch, Levi and Nico are rolling around in ambulances and hooking up in on-call rooms. Ditto for the women, I stan Callie x Arizona especially their golden years. Nothing will ever touch the way Arizona used to say “Calliope” when they first started dated, it still makes me smile thinking about it. They’ve had addicts, alcoholics, neurodivigent characters, every race you could think of, Muslim, Christian,Jewish,and atheists. All kinds of socio-economic backgrounds. If you can think it they’ve had it and there really isn’t much reason or room to list all the characters both recurring and regular who have checked damn near every box.

The Bad:

It’s time for more brown Asians. And a regular neurodivergent character although there is more than enough room to diagnose a few of the characters if they wanted to. I’d be happy with a deaf doctor too. Also Carina DeLuca is currently the only Bi-character and she’s been kind of only used as a bed warmer which is...well, yikes.
