My thoughts on Vicious by V.E Schwab which has left me broken and suffering
Don't read if you don't want spoilers. Also, I haven't read Vengeful yet so I'd appreciate no spoilers, please!
Sydney is a bean and I love her even though she's not as innocent as she looks
Mitch, I love you with all my heart and I will buy you all of the chocolate milk that you want
Victor my asexual baby I love you, you sick twisted bitch
Eli my favourite murderer I love you as well, you sick twisted bitch
I started reading fanfic for this book less than 100 pages in
Victor and Eli's relationship and it falling apart fucking killed me
They're so obsessed with each other and it's toxic but I still desperately want them to be together
"Victor Vale was not a fucking sidekick" FUCKING GET IT VICTOR
Them being in the same hotel the entire time took me the fuck out
All the scenarios where they could have just seen each other in the hotel and not been able to do shit cause there were other fucking people
Serena is a bit of a bitch and I kinda hate her more than Eli even though I know Eli is FUCKED UP
The pacing was brilliant, and the fucking worldbuilding was fantastic
Victor and Eli hate each other so much, but to this day no one has known them as well as they knew each other and it kills me that they are now ready to MURDER on fucking sight
They finally found their equal when they met, after years of trauma and looking out for only themselves, and then they both became scared of the vulnerability and weakness of being known that they end up betraying each other
If Victor had just trusted Eli with his life, as Eli had trusted Victor with his none of it would've happened
If Victor had just waited, or not tried to keep up with Eli none of his would have happened
EVERYONE HERE NEEDS THERAPY. The most mentally stable one is fucking Mitch who believes he is cursed
Victor's little found family of strays kills me
LOVE stabbing our totally PLATONIC best friend up against a wall while stabbing him cause that totally doesn't give off any gay vibes
Same with PROMISING TO REMEMBER EACH OTHER FOREVER AND NOT DYING
I haven't even gotten to the ending yet but in short the entire thing fucking killed me and I love them and how twisted they are and weak they are for each other but again ready to murder on sight
just the gay vibes people
In conclusion, I am FUCKING DISTRAUGHT at the fact I don't have Vengeful yet. I am broken, in tears and pain and I want to re-read immediately and pick up on things I didn't notice before and just THE VIBES PEOPLE THE VIBES.
I have no one to rant at either which makes the pain worse

Better Off Without You
Part 2 of Better Off Without Me
Pairing: Victor Vale x fem!reader
Summary: Ten years after Victor pushed you away, you meet again. Your roles have been reversed, and Victor must work to show you that he wants you. First, he must deal with your reluctance to be near him.
Warnings: spoilers for Vicious, mentions/depictions of insecurity, angst, fluff
Word Count: 2.9k+ words
A/N: Title from better of without me by Matt Hansen (Spotify link).

“Victor,” you coo. “C’mon, we have stuff to do. Wake up, sleepy head.”
“No.”
Victor reaches out and takes your hand as he answers, though he doesn’t move from your shared bed. His answer is precisely what you expect, and the peaceful look on his face seems… completely out of character and slightly concerning.
You wake quickly and sit up with a gasp. The darkness is your only constant, and the empty space beside you serves only as a reminder of what you have lost. Textbooks and diplomas line the bookshelf across the room yet your college memories only remind you of what could have been different.
Less than twenty miles away, Lockland stands sentinel, where gothic architecture meets country club. The idea saddens you because once, you sat in Lockland trying your hardest to get close to Victor Vale. And then he pushed you away.
You want to forget Victor. The promise that you made to stay close is one that you could easily break, that you should break. It would only take a moment to pack up what truly matters and leave it all behind. But the 22-year-old Victor in your mind makes you stay; the Victor that leaned in close in the library and wanted your attention is the one you try to remember. The questions you had the night he let you go – although he let you go the moment he met Angie – continue to plague your mind. Looking back, Victor gave you every sign you needed to see that he wasn’t interested, he would never pick you, and that the dream life you wanted was just that: a dream.
You must get out of bed and escape your memories, so you get dressed and leave. As your mind races, you don’t notice which direction you are walking.
✯✯✯✯✯
Ten years have changed a lot of things. Victor Vale is nothing like the kid he left behind a decade ago. Now that he is free from the chains of Eli Ever, and from prison, and in a position to get everything he has ever wanted, Victor finds himself stuck. Every night in prison, Victor thought of the things he would get when he got out: a shiny, materialistic reward waiting in his future. Even as his mind wavered between which would be more rewarding, a comfortable bed or a room of his own, there was one constant. Victor craved someone more than any of the things he thought of.
“Hey, didn’t you go to school at Lockland?” Sydney asks from the backseat.
Victor clears his mind of his daydream, of a past that led him to a different future, and hums.
“It’s, like, ten miles from here,” she adds.
“Too dangerous,” Victor answers quickly.
“Oh, yeah,” Sydney agrees sarcastically. “I’m sure the exact same security guards from the night you died are just waiting for you to show your face again.”
“Why the sudden interest in Lockland?”
“The kid has been in hotel rooms since we picked her up,” Mitch points out. “Surely a driveby in the middle of the night won’t hurt.”
Victor rolls his eyes; he is used to Sydney and Mitch teaming up against him (even Dol, when he’s around). He sighs but nods, and Mitch slows to turn toward Victor’s past.
✯✯✯✯✯
The only thing that has changed is the addition of one streetlight. In the minimal light, the stretch of sidewalk where you last saw Victor looks just as dismal as in your memories. A girl laughs on the other side of the tree, and you turn to walk away. Someone is blocking the path, and you freeze, unsure if you’re dreaming, time traveling, or incredibly unlucky.
Victor says your name and takes a step toward you. You match his step as you move back, keeping distance between you. The distance was his decision, he forced you back, yet he seems surprised by your movement.
“Vic, we…” Sydney begins, but she trails off when she sees Victor.
“You stayed close,” Victor says softly. “I thought that was just-“
“A trick to convince you to pick me instead of someone else?” you suggest as you remind him of what he said the last time you spoke. “But it doesn’t matter, right? If I don’t matter, which we both know I don’t, then where I live doesn’t matter either.”
“I-“
Victor can’t form a sentence and feels inadequate for once in his life. He looks at you and remembers what you used to be like. You were bright and open, and whatever light you used to have that you were kind enough to show Victor has been thoroughly put out. By him.
“I went to prison,” Victor says.
“I know,” you answer. You cross your arms as an added layer of defense, but your fight-or-flight responses are kicking in. You hate that you remember Victor knows all about those adrenal triggers.
“You said you’d stay close for me. If you meant that, my friends over there could use a safe place to stay, to lay low while everything blows over.”
Sydney and Mitch wave when you look over, and you fight the urge to ask Victor why he let other people trail along with him but was so against letting you in when he needed someone most.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” you respond. “You don’t like me, Vic, so let’s just do what we do best and walk away from each other.”
As you and Victor continue staring at one another, you’re both feeling the same thing: reluctance. You want to be there for Victor, but he left once, and you know he will do it again; you invited him to get close once and have regretted it ever since. Victor, however, is only reluctant to stay with you for your safety. He has feelings for you, and they hit him with full force as he looks at the sadness in your eyes. The sadness and loneliness that he caused.
“Bye, Vic.”
You turn to leave, and Victor refuses to let you walk away once more. He has to do something before you are too far to reach. Again.
“I love you!” Victor calls.
The statement catches you, Victor, Sydney, and Mitch by surprise. You stop with your back to him and wonder if you really are dreaming. Victor doesn’t know where it came from, but he knows that it’s true. He may not even know what love truly is, but if he is going to find out with someone it is going to be you.
“I tried not to,” he adds. “I had to deal with Eli, and you were so close that it scared me. But don’t make me watch you walk away again, not without giving me a chance.”
“Stop,” you demand as you turn toward him. “You don’t get to walk back into my life after ten years and tell me that you love me. You broke me, Vic! I let you get close, I was desperate to keep you close, and you shattered everything I thought we had. I can’t do this again. I won’t do this again. You may think you love me, but I know you well enough to know that you don’t. Using me to get to the point that you need is not worth it, Vic. If you need help, say that, but don’t lie to me.”
“I lied to you once. And it wasn’t tonight.”
“Stop,” you repeat.
“I need you. You are the only thing I have ever needed.”
“Prison will make you think you need a lot of things.”
“Can you just, for a second, consider giving me a chance to show you that I am not the same as I was ten years ago.”
You chuckle, but there is nothing funny about losing Victor a second time. “I have no doubt about that… You have a week, and then, like it or not, one of us is walking away.”
Victor takes the chance, and as he follows you home, he decides to be selfish for once. He wants you, and he is going to get you. Of all the mistakes Victor has made in his life, two of them haunt him: not telling Angie how he felt, and letting you go. Now that he can admit that he loves you like he’s never loved anyone before, he wants you to be with him. A week isn’t much time, but Victor is going to use every moment to convince you and get what he wants.
✯✯✯✯✯
When you wake the following morning, you assume that running into Victor at Lockland was a dream. However, the noise that can only be described as chaotic coming from your kitchen makes you think differently. Mitch and Sydney are in your kitchen, and Mitch’s efforts to stay quiet are canceled out by Sydney’s excitement to be out of a hotel room (if only for a week).
“Sorry,” Victor mumbles as he walks behind you. “She doesn’t get out much.”
“Thanks to you,” Sydney adds quickly.
“It’s no problem,” you say softly. “I, uh- Do I want to know why you need to lay low?”
“Probably not,” Victor answers. “But if you ask, I’ll tell you.”
You move to the left to increase space between you and Victor as you shake your head. The reluctance from last night has strengthened, and you briefly consider locking yourself in your room until they leave.
Victor places a mug before you. “You still like it the same way?”
You nod and pull your favorite drink closer to you. Victor's actions and words align, but the stark contrast between the current Victor and the Victor that forced you to walk away years ago makes you hesitate.
“Most people say, ‘thank you.’ Since you’re cute, I’ll assume you thought it,” Victor says.
Hearing the exact words you said to him in Lockland makes you look up quickly. Victor has that look, the one that looks like he might smile, and you smile at him before looking back to your mug.
“I’ll assume it’s still a hard pass on the hugs, too,” you whisper.
“Maybe you’d be surprised.”
You decide not to ask, and as you focus on ignoring him (as much as you can sharing a living space, at least), Victor realizes that your roles have completely reversed. You and Victor have traded words, actions, and responsibilities down to the smallest detail of your relationship. It’s like a dance, and Victor is already confident in his new position, but he has to convince you to trust him to lead.
After Sydney and Mitch leave to get Dol from the hotel, you and Victor are left alone.
“Why’d you disappear?” Victor asks.
He breaks the silence, and your brows furrow at his question.
“I asked you in the library, before everything happened, and you never really answered.”
“It doesn’t matter, Vic.”
“You do matter,” Victor promises. He leans forward to look into your eyes; his are serious as he holds your attention and repeats, “You matter.”
“At some point, though, you have to admit that your life was probably better. That you were, I don’t know, better off without me,” you reply.
Eye contact with Victor has never been easy, and you used to have to work relentlessly for it. Now, he holds your eyes with conviction and something else you can’t place.
“You disappeared because you thought I didn’t need you? How did that-“
“Vic.” You stand and tear your eyes from his as you add, “We’ve got a few days until we go our separate ways. Don’t make this harder than it needs to be.”
“Why can’t you see-“
“No!” you interrupt. “I saw ten years ago, and you blindsided me. I’m smarter now, Vic, and I am not losing you again. I gave you space once, and maybe I never should have stopped.”
Dol barks at your front door, and you return to your room. It was a mistake letting Victor this close, and you don’t know if you can trust anything he says.
✯✯✯✯✯
Something happens during Victor’s fourth day with you. When you exit your bedroom for breakfast, he catches your eyes over the table and gestures toward your back door. Despite your doubts, you follow him. In the privacy of your backyard, you wrap your arms around yourself and wait for Victor to speak.
“Do you want to talk about it?” he asks.
You shake your head, and Victor looks away.
“I didn’t want to disappear,” you admit. “I came to see you in the cafeteria one day, but Angie was there. You looked so happy that I couldn’t- didn’t want to interrupt. All I ever wanted was for you to be happy, Vic, and I gave you the room to do that.”
“I-“
“You loved Angie. I could see it. So, when I heard she died, I thought you might need a friend. I was wrong.”
“Look at me,” Victor requests. “I am not giving up on you again, but if you want us to leave, we will.”
“I don’t know what I want.”
You wipe your hands across your cheeks as Victor watches. He wants to reach out and offer the soft touches you used to give him, but your reluctance to let him in is something he can easily see.
“I have been hurting for ten years,” you whisper. “But I want it. I still want you, so badly, and I think I can trust you. I’ve been wrong before.”
Victor steps toward you, and when you don’t move back, he takes another step. When there are only inches between you, he holds your eyes with his again.
“I want you to be mine,” he murmurs as he raises his hand toward your shoulder. “Selfishly, thoughtlessly, mine.”
Sydney clears her throat in the doorway, and you and Victor look over simultaneously.
“Are you okay?” she asks Victor.
“I was better before you interrupted,” he replies. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Are you dying again? Do you have a fever or something? Because-“
“Syd, what is wrong with you?”
“You’re being… gross.”
“She sounds like you,” you murmur.
Victor takes a deep breath before asking Sydney to give him a minute.
“You have two days, Vale,” you say when he turns to you. “If you are willing to work as hard as I did, we’ll see where things go from there.”
“Tell me you can see it,” Victor asks.
“You’re not giving up on me again and unless I ask, you’re not walking away,” you reply. “I know. But I spent years fighting to get close to you. Besides, Sydney clearly thinks you have a parasite or something, so how am I supposed to know this is really you?”
Victor rolls his eyes and opens the back door. He follows you in, and when he sees your smile is back, he is glad he wasn’t dreaming when he saw you at Lockland a few nights ago.
✯✯✯✯✯
“I’m going to miss that mattress,” Mitch says as he packs his bag.
“Dol likes the yard,” Sydney agrees. “Back to hotels, I assume?”
Victor is still in the guest room, and you knock on the door before entering. He zips his bag and sits on the edge of the bed as you approach him.
“Did you mean what you said at Lockland?” you ask.
“Which time?”
“This one.”
“That I love you? Yeah. You’re one of the only things I needed- craved in prison.”
“Really?” you ask with a smile. “Because Mitch said you talked about getting a bed and a better toothbrush all the time.”
“In college, when you would talk to me, there was this light in your eyes,” Victor says. “I haven’t seen it in a long time.”
You reach out and smooth your hand over the shoulder of his trench coat. When he doesn’t move or comment on the touch, you step closer.
“Prison give you all the time and space you need?” you murmur.
“Something like that.”
 “Have you reconsidered my offer?”
Victor looks up, and his almost smile returns. He clearly understands what you are referring to and moves his arms out.
“Test away.”
You step forward and hug him, and when Victor’s arms wrap around you, you believe him. Not what he said when Angie died, but everything he has said this week.
“Now that I’ve had one, we can’t stop,” you say against him. “So, I guess that means your hugs are addictive. We’ll have to test this further.”
Victor mumbles something, and you squeeze him. The initial reluctance you felt, the fear of being pushed away again, brought you closer to Victor than ever.
“You really love me?” you ask.
“I do. But-“
“You’re not perfect. I know; I’m not either. I don’t expect this to be easy, Vic. Surely you remember how hard I worked in college.”
“Seems like you’d get tired.”
“As if I could get tired of you,” you tease.
Victor pulls you into another hug and doesn’t move when the door opens. You push him away gently and see Sydney staring at Victor.
“Does this mean we’re staying?” she asks.
“It means I’m staying,” he answers with a shrug.
“You’re welcome to stay as long as you want, Syd,” you offer.
Sydney thanks you before watching Victor with her head cocked. “You’re weird,” she decides before she leaves.
“I didn’t want you to leave,” Victor admits. “The night that Angie died, I had unfinished business with Eli. After dealing with that, though… I’m ready to get what I want.”
“That’s me?” you ask. Your faux surprise makes Victor groan until you add, “Does that mean you’re selfishly, thoughtlessly mine, too?”
Victor looks into your eyes and smiles. “Forever.”

“Okay. Never have I ever,” he said. “Been ice skating.”
I looked off to the side, lips in a thin line before I took a sip of my drink. The group went silent, as I was the only one to take a drink.
“You’ve never been ice skating?”
“How have you never been ice skating? You live in New York!”
Turning to my best friend, I narrowed my eyes at her. “I grew up in Florida. Where it’s hot about 99.9% of the time.”
“What about that other 0.1%?” Mitch asked.
“It’s actually cold,” I chuckle. “Floridians don’t really like the cold because we’re so used to the heat, but don’t quote me on that.” I looked at Mitch, our eyes locking. His was telling me that he was forming a plan.
I've had a thing for Mitch for the last few months. I mean, who wouldn’t?! His eyes are the perfect shade of brown; a whiskey, caramel color. His hair is black and little long, perfect for, eventually, wrapping my fingers around. The arms, the abs, the everything. This man is pure perfection. Do we work together? Yes. Same department? NO.
While he goes out into the field, I stay in the office and make sure they have all the intel they need, as well as all the supplies they may need. I’ve gone out with them about 3 times by request of Irene Kennedy, but other than that, I’ve been at a desk.
My phone ringing brings me out of my thoughts. As I get up to retrieve it, I see from the corner of my eye that Mitch stands as well. Once I reach my phone, I answer it with, “Yeah?”
“It’s that any way to speak to your grandmother?”
“Oh, sorry, Mamaw. Habit,” I said.
“Well, that’s quite alright. Listen, sweetheart, I was calling to remind you about the Christmas party. You’re still going to come, right?”
Shit. “I forgot about the party,” I said, apologetically. “But, I will try to make it. I just need to talk to my boss and see if she’ll let me have it off, which she might because I hardly ask for time off.”
My Mamaw chuckles. “Well, that’s okay. Just let me or your dad know if you’re going to be able to make it. I need to go make some cookies for the girls at church.”
I chuckle. “Alright, Mamaw. I’ll talk to you in a couple days.”
“Alright, sweetheart. I love you.”
“I love you, too.” I disconnect the call, and hang my head, sighing.
“Everything okay?”
I turn around, looking into those whiskey eyes that have my heart without their owner knowing it. “Yeah. I just forgot about my family Christmas party. The very party I look forward to every single year. I’m sure if I ask Kennedy for it off, she’d give it to me. Though, it’d have to be a few days.” I look off beside him, my brows drawn in.
Mitch chuckles. “Well, you can ask her tomorrow.”
“I’ll do that,” I say. Sigh. “So, what was that look earlier?”
“What look?”
“That look you had on your face that said ‘I’m forming a plan.’”
“Well, you said you never went–”
“Don’t tell me you’re gonna take me ice skating,” I interrupt.
He raised a brow, shaking his head quickly. “What’s wrong with that?”
“You do know how clumsy I am, right?”
“She missed her chair the other day when she went to sit down,” Victor said.
“Fuck you,” I said, looking over Mitch’s shoulder. I looked back at the man in front of me, sighing. “Are you asking to come with me?”
He shrugged. “How else am I going to teach you?”
“You do realize there’s skating rinks in Central Park, right?”
He again shrugged, then sighed like this conversation was boring him, which in turn made me sigh.
“Fine,” I said. “You can come. There’s a skating rink about an hour from my dad’s, where I’ll be staying.”
~~~
Irene let me have two weeks off, which is surprising. I never ask for days off, so that’s probably why. Mitch came with me to Florida, and we had a nice time at my family’s Christmas party. The next day, which happened to be a Sunday, Mitch and I decided to go to the ice skating rink, which I must say, I wasn’t all that bad at… once I got the hang of it.
“Mitch!” I yelped, grabbing onto his arm while laughing. For the very first time since I’ve known him, I actually saw a smile spread across his face.
“You got it!” he chuckled.
I was laughing so hard at that point, I almost fell over. Mitch led us over to the edge of the rink, where I bent over the side, laughing. When I stood back up, I looked at Mitch, who still had that smile on his face. “I almost fell like five times!”
He chuckled, grabbing my hand and lacing our fingers together. “Come on. I’ve got something else in mind.”
“You’re not gonna take me to a back alley and fu–”
“No!” he interrupted. “I gotta take you to dinner first.” He winked as we made it back to the carpet. He led us to the benches, where we took off our skates and put our regular shoes back on; his being his normal boots and mine being my favorite boots I wear every fall and winter that were starting to come apart.
After we both made it back to the car, Mitch started it up, looking at me almost expectantly.
“What?” I asked.
“Where’s the nearest grocery store?” he asked back.
“Uhm,” I said, thinking. “It’s like three minutes away, why?”
“You’ll see. Bring it up on GPS.”
I took my phone out of my jacket pocket, bringing up the nearest grocery store, which happened to be an Aldi. Mitch drove us to the grocery store, where we both got out of the car. He took my hand as we both walked into the store, grabbing a basket on our way in.
Mitch walked us around the store, grabbing everything he wanted to put into the cart. Milk, eggs, flour, white sugar, brown sugar, butter, chocolate chips.
I smiled as he put a few more things in our cart. “Are we making chocolate chip cookies?”
“How’d you guess?” he asked.
“Well, considering I like to bake, and you put the ingredients for chocolate chip cookies in the basket, I just assumed.”
He chuckled, as we walked to the front of the store to check out. Once all of our items were rung up and we bagged them, we walked out of the store and back to the car. I brought up my dad’s house on the GPS, and off we went!
When we made it back to my dad’s, we got started on mixing the ingredients for the cookies before putting them in the oven.
“I’ll see you in about 10 minutes, my loves,” I said, blowing a kiss to the raw cookie dough.
Mitch chuckled as I stood back up straight. I gasped before walking around Mitch to the living room, where my dad and stepmom were sitting on the couch, watching a Christmas movie. I asked where the stuff for hot chocolate was. Once he told me, I booked it straight for the pantry to grab those ingredients, which was just cocoa powder and marshmallows.
“You making hot chocolate?” Mitch asked.
“You bet your ass I am!” I exclaimed.
“Make us some!” my stepmom said.
I chuckled, grabbing two kinds of milk from the fridge; regular whole milk and almond milk.
“Almond milk?” Mitch wondered.
I nodded my head. “Mhmm. For me. I’m lactose intolerant.”
He nodded once in understanding as I grabbed six mugs from the cabinet in case my stepsister and her boyfriend wanted some as well. Once the milk was all heated up enough, I put the necessary amount of cocoa powder into the mugs and mixed before adding the marshmallows.
Two of the mugs went to my dad and stepmom, and just as I predicted, my stepsister and her boyfriend came and took two of the other mugs, marshmallows and all!
I made Mitch’s the way he asked before I took the Reddi Whip from the fridge, putting some on mine before adding a couple of marshmallows and taking a sip. I smiled and sighed in contentment, happy with how I made the hot cocoa.
The timer on the oven started beeping, letting us know that the cookies were done. I went to grab the oven mit before I saw Mitch bending over, grabbing them out of the oven, hand covered with the oven mit I was looking for.
Seeing him being so domestic made my stomach flutter with butterflies. I sucked in a breath as he put the cookie sheet on the stove to start the cooling process. Seeing him being this way made the crush I had for him grow tenfold. Deciding I couldn’t wait to eat a cookie anymore, I grabbed a plate and put about six cookies on it before grabbing my mug and heading outside to sit by the pool.
Mitch followed me, sitting in the chair next to me. “So,” he started. “We’re sitting by a pool when it’s cold outside. Why?”
I shrugged. “Best way to see the stars, I guess.” I heard him hum, like he was agreeing with what I was saying. “Listen. I’m glad you came with me. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had this much fun or smiled as much as I have.”
“That’s not because of me,” he said.
I looked at him as he was looking down at his lap. “Yes, it is. Mitch, it’s because of you I’m having a good time, not because of my family. Well, they’re part of the reason, but you’re the main reason.”
He looked at me, seriousness in his eyes, then smiled a little. “Thanks. You’re the reason I’ve had so much fun, too.”
“Oh, my goodness,” I heard my stepsister’s voice. “Just kiss already!”
I looked back at Mitch after having looked around for my sister. Shrugging, I said, “Why not?”
He stood up before walking over to my chair, holding his hand out for me to take. “Better do as the lady says.”
“Wait!” she said. She disappeared for a moment before reappearing with her boyfriend, who stuck something on the top of the door frame. “Now you can kiss.”
Mitch and I walked to the screen door and looked up. “Mistletoe.” We looked at each other while chuckling before our smiles died down.
I reached up and placed my hand on his cheek at the same moment he tucked a piece of hair behind my ear before bringing my lips to meet his. It wasn’t a long kiss nor a short kiss, but long enough for me to feel those electric sparks.
We pulled apart for a moment before our foreheads met.
“This is something I’ve been missing and will look forward to,” I whispered.
“What’s that?” Mitch whispered.
I looked him in the eyes, hand still on his cheek as I smiled, “Holidays with you.”
A antihero who believes himself a villain, a villain who believes himself a hero. V. E. Schwab never disappoints me!
This is a book for comic books fans, but also for people who’ve never read comics in their lives. It has everything: superpowers, a Magneto-vs-professor-X relationship, and a little bit of craziness.
I love how Victor could be the boy next door (or the class’s nerd), and he himself doesn’t fully realize who he really is and can be. Or maybe he doesn’t really care, not until he has done what he needs to do, what he lives for.
I love how Sidney is not the girl next door (or maybe she is). She is tougher than anyone gives her credit for and she knows.
I love how Mitch is the opposite of what you would expect from him, how he keeps trying despite saying the opposite, how he never stops caring, even when it’s the hardest thing to do.
Schwab’s characters and stories always feel extremely real, wether they’re set in a fantasy world or in a small American town.
There is always this light political take, enough to make it impossible to ignore, but always discreet in its own impossible way.
This is one of those books that, at a first glance, are not my cup of tea, but I know this author is special, so I started reading it anyway. I was right: I already grabbed the sequel!
this is the least hinged i've felt in awhile anyways vengeful part 3 ascension
DOMINIC HI
"dominic in his camoflage as human"
oh god this part is such a good reminder of how shitty EON is too. locking people in cages. not trying to help them, just to contain them and use them. just reading it I can feel Dom's panic it's terrible i feel so bad for him.
Dominic Alexander Rusher
June stop alluding to your backstory it's making me curious
Marcella is such a girlboss
well at least Eli knows he's mad
it's so funny how marcella blames misogny for all her struggles with taking over the city and destroying everyone in her way. I mean there's definitely misogyny but that's not the only reason. personally i like to blame homophobia for things i don't like
YOU GO JUNE
poor jonathan royce :(
i think i would have liked ian campbell to live. but he was too noble for this story of villains
marcella bringing down the warehouse...iconic
Sydney keeping bits of Serena around is so morbid. travel-size dead sister
her personal shopper 💀
marcella has an exceptional amount of things wrong with her.
vicious and vengeful work very well together. eli and victor's relationship reflects itself; the active focus on taking the other down switches. even which one dies at the end. i want to know how a third book will interact with that dynamic. they've each had their arc. what do they do now? together?
noo june baby don't tell marcella about victor
giggling i love seeing victor from someone else's eyes it's so fun like that's my creepy fucked up guy
u go sydney
F I X M E
Merit PD's strange shit alarm
GIGGLING AND SQUEALING AND SHAKING THIS JUST. AAAH. EELI SEEING THE PICTURE OF VICTOR. THIS PROBABLY SNHOULDNT MAKE ME SO HAPPY BUT IT MAKES ME SO. GIDDY GODDAMNIT
VICTOR VALE & MITCH TURNER, the villains series
when they reached their cell, and he still hadn’t answered, victor stopped, rested his back against the bars, and looked at him. not at his hulking shoulders or his meaty fists with their scarred knuckles, or the tattoos that ran up his neck, but at his face. he looked him in the eyes, even if he had to look up a bit to do so.
Hidden Gifts
Day 10 of 12 Days of Ficmas
Pairing: Victor Vale x fem!reader
Summary: You sneak out to buy Christmas presents, but when Victor wakes up to find you missing, he inflicts pain until he finds you.
Word Count: 1.1k+ words
Warnings: angst, fluff, it's somewhat implied that the reader is an EO. This could be platonic if you ignore 1 little thing.
A/N: The hot chocolate gif is based on 1 line from the fic bc none of the (far too few) Vicious gifs matched this. Sorry this is kinda short, but I will be working on the Victor series over the next few weeks! Feel free to send me ideas, requests, or feedback! :)
Tumblr media
You sit up slowly, willing the bed frame not to creak as you stand. Sydney’s door is open, but she’s asleep, her arm wrapped around Dol as his snout rests against her neck. Smiling at the sight, you continue sneaking down the hallway, glad that Victor’s door is closed and Mitch is sound asleep. Pulling your coat on, you slip out the door, away from Victor Vale.
The streets of Merit are busy, last-minute shoppers milling in and out of stores. Christmas decorations make the town seem brighter than in broad daylight, and the Christmas spirit feels tangible.
Finding the perfect gift for Sydney, you put it in your basket and continue shopping. Victor is the hardest to shop for; you’re not sure what he would want. Another trench coat? World peace? Who knows.
✯✯✯✯✯
Victor rolls over, his eyes fixed on the ceiling as he wakes. His pale brows furrow as he realises something feels off. The pain dial in his mind always has at least three outward connections: Sydney, Mitch, and you. Occasionally, there are more, like when Dom is around, but now he can only feel two.
He gets up and walks across the hall, the steady sound of Mitch’s breathing alerting Victor to his presence. Moving toward Sydney’s room, his concern grows as he wonders how and why she would be gone at this time of night. She’s curled in her bed, wrapped around Dol, though. Which only means one thing: you are gone.
Victor approaches Sydney’s bed and lays a hand on her shoulder to shake her. He says her name, whispering an apology to Dol when he stretches awake.
“What?” Sydney asks, her eyes still closed.
Victor says your name, and Sydney’s eyes open.
“What about her?” she asks, sitting up.
“She’s not here. Do you know if she went somewhere?”
“No, she didn’t say she was going anywhere. Are you sure she’s gone? Maybe she’s just in the other room.”
“I can’t feel her, to control her pain I mean. She’s not here, Syd.”
Sydney gets out of bed, maneuvering over Dol, who is content to go back to sleep, aware of Sydney’s anxiety but too tired to care. No one blames him.
“Mitch!” Victor says as he enters the bedroom.
“Too early,” Mitch grunts.
Victor ignores his complaints and asks if he knows where you are. Mitch rubs his eyes before rolling over to look at Victor.
“She’s gone?”
Victor’s jaw clenches before he walks to the front door. Sydney and Mitch follow him, wondering what his plan is.
“I’ll find her,” Victor vows, pulling his coat on. “Stay in here. I can’t wish a good night to all.”
The door slams shut, and Sydney looks up at Mitch.
“Was that a Christmas quote?” she asks quietly.
“Yeah,” Mitch answers, his eyes on the door. “He cares about her, so…”
“He’s going to find her no matter what.”
Mitch nods, directing Sydney to the kitchen as he gathers the ingredients for hot chocolate.
“Do you think she’s okay?”
Mitch smiles as he says, “She can handle herself. And I don’t think we need to be concerned about her safety or well-being, not with Victor out there.”
✯✯✯✯✯
As Victor walks down the street, he turns the dial up more than necessary. What should be causing people to turn away from him is instead making people fold in on themselves and collapse in pain. Victor notices that nearly every person in Merit has a shopping bag, so he starts looking into stores. He wonders why you’d be out shopping without telling anyone, even as he searches a store window for you.
The next store he approaches has too many Christmas decorations in the window to see anything, so he sighs before walking in. Tired and dealing with an anxiety he isn’t used to, Victor turns up the dial as he walks down the centre aisle. Several people groan with pain, and Victor ignores everything as he tries to focus on finding you with the pain.
“Vic,” you whisper harshly, somewhere in the store.
He turns down one of the aisles and finds you staring at him, holding your shoulder like it’s in pain.
“What are you doing?”
The pain immediately lessens, and you drop your hand, several shopping bags falling by the full basket beside you.
“You left without telling me,” Victor explains, “what was I supposed to think?”
“You were supposed to stay asleep! It’s midnight, why are you here?” you argue.
“Why are you here?”
“Because I’m buying Christmas gifts. Believe it or not, Sydney and Mitch, even you, deserve Christmas. We don’t have to hide anymore, Vic. Well… now we do because you knocked out half the people in this city.” You add the last part sarcastically, but Victor knows you’re right.
The people in the store recover and begin shopping again, in just enough nudging pain that they don’t look at you.
“Let’s go,” Victor demands, turning away from you.
“I need to pay for this.”
You see Victor’s shoulders rise and fall with his exasperated breath, but he gestures for you to lead the way. He stands behind you, glaring at the young cashier until he finishes ringing up your purchases and begins gift-wrapping them. Victor silently opens the door for you, taking some of the bags and turning everyone away as you return to where you should have been all night.
Victor opens the door and follows you inside before setting your bags down. He turns to face you, tossing his coat onto a nearby chair.
“You can’t just leave like that. Those gifts aren’t the only ones that need to be hidden, and you know it,” Victor says.
“And you know that I can take care of myself, Vic. It has been a terrible year and I just wanted to do something nice, make this Christmas special, is that so bad?” you respond, crossing your arms.
Victor sighs and drags his hands down his face. “I care about you, as much as it pains me to admit,” he pauses as you stifle a laugh, waving a hand to make him continue. “When I woke up and you weren’t here…”
“You assumed the worst.” You place a hand on Victor’s shoulder and promise, “I’m not going anywhere, Vic. I care about you, too, and Sydney, Mitch, and Dol. You’re stuck with me.”
Victor looks at your hand on his shoulder, then grabs your other hand, pulling you into him before he tilts your chin and kisses you.
“I knew I should have gotten mistletoe!” Sydney whines as she walks in. Her attitude changes when she sees the bags, approaching them to ask, “What’d you get?”
You gently slap her hand away and reply, “You have to wait ‘til Christmas morning.”
“Yeah, kid,” Victor teases.
“You do too,” you tell him.
“Just for those gifts, right?”
You roll your eyes, smiling as you walk away with the bags.
“Just for those, right?” he yells after you.
anyway you heard about my vicious collage au (i’m writing first chapter and i have the storyline planned...kinda) but i have another idea:
social media au
where Victor is anonymous blackout poetry author on twitter and Mitch is his no. 1 fan with a crush (because that no-face poet has really pretty hands, okay?)
