Underrated Fanfic Friday!

Continuing our veela theme, we have I want her by janelealart and wizardlywordsmith. I read this one awhile back and loved it!

Obviously, you can see why I was attracted to the veela fics, they have a propensity to have obsessive/pining men, my favorite thing!

This contains all of that with a draco determined to resist his feelings to the degree that he moves on the other side of the world to avoid our girl! Of course, Harry and Ginny are having none of that 😉

This is a quick and light oneshot! Read it in a break during work! 😁But it will leave you wishing there was more!

Draco awakens his creature inheritance on his 14th birthday. It's a great news right?

For him and his housemates? Definitely. For anyone else? They find out pretty fast it is very much not.

As it turns out Draco is a very fierce and very temperamental flying chicken (Veela) who promptly adopted all the Slytherin lower years as his 'chicks'.

He would go into an absolute feral rage if ANY of them were hurt and deal with the preparators with no mercy or whatsoever. Let's also be said that Veelas are very, very vengeful creatures.

So as it should be other houses would learned very quickly that hurting one of the lower year Slytherins are a serious health hazzard (for them) and need to be avoided like the plague if they didn't want a pissed of pureblood or worse... a floff with anger issues and very sharp talons and instant combustion abilities out for their blood.

JKR Writing Fleur Delacour: So this french bird is super sexy but she's also incredibly shallow and vain and snooty, y'know how the French are. She's high fem which is a bad thing, tomboys are the best. She's also just incredibly annoying and full of herself. Constantly making herself the centre of attention even though nobody likes her and they call her phlegm behind her back. Hilarious, right?

90% of Fanfics when Writing Fleur Delacour: At first she comes off as entitled & full of herself, but as time goes on it's clear she's actually incredibly kind, compassionate and loyal. She also has a keen sense of matters of the heart. For the younger characters she takes on the role of a wise older sister. She's loyal and nurturing and and will always be there if you need someone to talk to. She is from a noble matriarchal race of fierce warriors and will fight tooth and nail to defend what is hers.

What are your thoughts and opinions about fleur? I think she is really interesting and had a lot of character potential. Also what are your thoughts on veelas in general. Personally something about it to me just feels off.. idk

I've talked about Fleur before in this post, as well as her parallels to Percy in this post. 🥰

As for Veela in general, I think they're just a lazy "twist" on the Sirens of Greek Mythology, and it's incredibly sexist.

Both Sirens & Veela are beautiful women who are overly sexualized & tend to represent "dangerous" temptation by women (i.e. the Sirens' song leads men to their death while the Veela's dance hypnotizes men and makes them act stupid & impulsive).

To make things even more misogynistic, Veela hair is considered "temperamental" in a wand, and when Veela become angry, their faces start "elongating into sharp, cruel-beaked bird heads, and long, scaly wings were bursting from their shoulders" & they can throw fire from their hands. JKR basically mixed the 'overly emotional woman' stereotype with the 'hell hath no fury like a women scorned' stereotype. 🙄

I do find it funny that it's implied that Veela can only hypnotize people who are attracted to women, so if a character isn't overly affected by them, then they could either be gay or strong-willed, and good luck guessing which one! 🤣
