I spent the first hour of my 25th birthday thinking about Ben Hargreeves, as one does.

And thus I present…

A Collection of Ben Hargreeves Thoughts And Theories

- INSANELY misunderstood in my opinion

- There is a difference between how Ben was as a child versus who he is as a (ghost) adult

- The Hargreeves all remember the child Ben was, while Klaus knows who Ben became and loves him for it

- Ben as a child: sweet, quiet, kind, gentle, polite, snarky, serious, timid, fearful, still, obedient, know-it-all

- Ben as an adult: loyal, determined, jaded, unapologetic, realist, tough love, practical, sad, sarcastic, caring, desperate, annoyed

- Everyone says Ben was “the best of them” when they were teenagers; I imagine that he was always there for whoever needed it with a kind word or just a hand to hold. Ben just wants to help, I think that’s one trait that stayed with him into adulthood.

- He was afraid of the Horror growing up, obviously. He didn’t want to use it, we can assume from this that he never took pleasure in the death and destruction it brought. He literally says “I didn’t sign up for this.”

- Seemed to go along with Klaus’ pranks, even enjoy them. He might have had a bit of a wild side as a teenager that faded a bit after he died.

- We know he was scared to move on to the afterlife when he died. I think it was because he didn’t want to leave his family yet.

- He stayed with Klaus all those years, and he didn’t have to. He CHOSE to. I think he wanted to stay with Klaus, give him someone to hold on to and watch out for him no matter how frustrating it got.

- But even though he wouldn’t abandon Klaus, Ben very clearly got angry and frustrated and annoyed with him, and understandably so. He had to watch Klaus waste away the life he didn’t get to have.

- When he says as much to Klaus when they’re at the motel, I don’t think this was Ben choosing to rub the reality of his death in Klaus’ face. I don’t think he was doing it to be malicious, because that’s not Ben. I think that he was trying to give Klaus something else to focus on while he was reliving his trauma. Tough love - yeah, what he was saying was undoubtedly hard for Klaus to hear, and I’m sure Ben was airing out his own grievances, but I think it was in the name of distraction more than anything else. If Klaus could think about what Ben was going through instead of focusing on the memories, that could help him in the end.

- In regards to the S2 possession: I chalk that up to poor writing and poor characterization. Ben ASKING Klaus to possess him makes sense to me, but everything else that he does without consent I see as a failure to understand Ben’s character. After everything they went through as kids, after everything Ben himself went through, after the things he probably saw happen to Klaus on the streets, I simply refuse to believe that Ben would have “no regrets” about taking control of Klaus’ body like that. The person the writers have set up Ben to be prior to those scenes would NEVER have been okay with that. Honestly, in my mind, those Ben scenes are not canon.

-That being said, his decision to save Viktor makes perfect sense. As much as he clearly wanted to stay with Klaus, he knew he would finally make an impact on his sibling’s lives if he could get to Viktor and help him control his powers. Again, he showed Viktor tough love along with compassion: he didn’t let him give up.

- But wanting a hug as he goes? There’s the Ben they all knew as kids.

- I think he probably regretted not getting to tell Klaus the truth in his last moments, which is why he asks Viktor to do it. He didn’t want Klaus to carry around the guilt he must have felt at the idea that he made Ben stay. Ben, despite growing harder and more jaded in death, is still kindhearted.

- Predictably, dying greatly affected his personality and the way he saw things as he stayed with Klaus.

Perfect Failure

Ghost!Ben Hargreeves x gn!reader (platonic)

☆= In which the reader gets a good but disappointing grade on an essay and ghost!Ben Hargreeves comforts her

The day has already been horrible enough in your opinion. It started right in the morning when you slept a bit too long to get to school on time, which was really frustrating. And after waiting anxiously the whole day for getting that essay back, you nearly cried when you held it in your hand. You worked your ass off for this. Sure, you had started only a week before the deadline, but you invested time for research and writing, while you had to manage everything at home, due to your mother being in the hospital at the given time. And now it was a B+? Only a B+? Your first essay was an A- and while a B+ wasn’t bad at all, it was quite the disappointment.

That all leads to you being at the Hargreeves Estate now, not being able to sit at home in self-pity. Some entertainment, even if it’s in form of the weird fun that Klaus provides. Your mother didn’t mind, the Hargreeves always been close family friends after all. Looking through the house you noticed that Klaus wasn’t home, he would be back surely, so you sat down in the living room, looking around. The room was decorated with art of all sorts, books everywhere, only the most expensive and nice things. Things that overachievers created. People who where good at what they where doing. People who where extraordinary, gifted even. Not like you, you thought. Everything you tried, you did good in the beginning. Never average for being a beginner, but as time comes by you just don’t improve, you stop being better than others at what you were doing.

Not that that’s a bad thing, but it was never enough for you. How could it be enough if you are always stuck in second place? When everything you do is good, but never very good, never perfect? If others would ask you what your talent is, you would answer them that it is to fail. Don’t get me wrong, you weren’t a person who is good in everything. In most classes you had average, maybe good grades, but that didn’t stop you from wanting to be at the very top of the things you were good in.

Frustrated and maybe even a bit angry with yourself, you let out a huff as you threw a pillow across the room, knocking over a probably expensive vase. Not that anyone in the house would care about that. “My, that bad of a day, huh?”, you look next to you, Ben had suddenly appeared on the soft cushion.

“Got that damn essay back”, you frowned, crossing your arms in front of you, “Only got a B+, which is so not fair. The content of my essay was good. Perfect even. I only failed in the other categories, so I failed overall. I am a failure.”

Now it was Ben’s turn to frown. He was no stranger to that attitude of yours, the days you would push yourself past your limits, when nothing was good enough. “Come on now.” He sighed, “Failure? You do know that it’s not true. You did well in that essay.” You huff once more, as if he just had offended you in the most ridiculous way. “Exactly. I did well. Not perfect.”

The ghost was quiet for a second before realizing that this issue was way deeper than just wanting to be good at something. You wanted to be better than others. Like the constant need of surpassing others was bubbling up right inside you. “Y/N, you do realize that you don’t need to be better than others to be good, right? You are perfect just as you are. I know you want to be better than the best, but no matter if you score higher than them or fail something completely, it doesn’t change what you are worth.” You look at him, letting out a small laugh. “Ah, so poetic ghost-boy.” “Y/N! I am trying to be serious!” But he can’t help and has to laugh as well. “You are good enough, you hear me? I mean, even if things are more difficult for you, you always try your best and you still succeed. That’s something you can be proud of.” “You really think so?” “Of course.”

Ben had to smile, his eyebrows slightly raised while looking at you, “Just compare yourself to Klaus. You are extremely gifted next to him.”

You burst out laughing “Ben! So mean!”

I wanted to do Sloane but I unfortunately don't know enough about her character (I'm watching S3 with my dad and we're only up to Episode 3) :(

Triggers: Sickness? Implied intoxicated Klaus

Synopsis: Number 1 of the Umbrella Academy gets sick and consequentially bedridden? How would the rest of the Academy handle the situation as individuals? Written in a setting where they live together in the house (probably S1 without so much apocalypse rush?); NOT MEANT TO INTERTWINE WITH THE PLOT

Let's be real.

Luther gets a cold? He can handle it, he's fine, he doesn't need help, he's been sick before, and he doesn't want his siblings to help him in any way or be helpful

(he is lying on all of the above)

We'll review each sibling down the number line and start with everyone's favourite boar headed mama's boy.

Diego I feel like would know before Luther knows that he's sick (or getting sick)

He goes out and buys some cold and flu medication, "just to restock", and hides it in Luther's bedside drawers when Luther's out and about

This is the most he does, because he knows his brother, even though he's stupid as hell sometimes, can handle a cold

(he will be significantly more tolerable during this time, Klaus absolutely bullies him about it in a fond, Klaus kinda way)

Now, Allison. Allison, Allison, Allison.

Allison (a weird word now that I've typed it 5 times in a row) is of course very attentive. She also picks up on Diego's behaviour.

She, unlike Klaus, isn't a dickhead, so she smiles to herself about it and nothing more

She will be the one who checks in every few hours and makes sure that Luther's taking his meds and staying in bed

"Luther, I don't care that you think you're fine, you are not moving."

"What? Why?"

"You're sick???? You're contagious- Luther stop trying to get out of bed stop it"

"Allison, I'm fine, really"

Luther proceeded to cough so bad he doubled over, and Allison promptly pushed him back onto the bed and tucked him in with a little less patience than she had before

She knows this contact will definitely make her sick later, but she cares about Luther more, and future Allison will know not to repeat his mistakes

On to number 4, my personal bias

Klaus is a dick yes? We all know this?

Good, good, just making sure :)

He will be the person to also check in every few hours; he somehow accidentally falls perfectly in line with Allison's routine, so they swap out so efficiently Luther thinks they've coordinated it beforehand

("You think I planned this? Oh you silly little big boy.")

Klaus will try his best to keep Luther entertained but let's be honest here

It just makes Luther wish his meds had melatonin. And that he'd taken double the amount.

He will go on for actual hours about random shit he's seen, will laugh at his own jokes constantly

I'm placing this in S1 sort of time period so he's sober but barely and Ben is also there

Klaus will randomly adjust stuff on Luther's bed to make him more comfortable, like fluffing up couch pillows and readjusting his blankets

"Klaus, how do you know how to do all this?"

Klaus takes all the credit in a panic, not wanting Luther to be all grumpy when he says Ben's being a control freak

Ben looks very exasperated at having credit, like always, being taken from him and given to Klaus

But, Ben thinks to himself, at least his brothers aren't screaming at eachother.

Five is cynical. That's his nature. He's a grown man who has to relive puberty and the general public; he's not happy

That doesn't stop him from wanting to help his brother, even if he's pea brained

He will adjust his med dosages based on his body and tolerance so that they actually work

He'll do the dumb little math to make sure his brother can get his coughing under control - he's starting to think the walls will start crashing down if his elephant coughs keep ringing out through the house

He will also elect himself as volume control. He's very respectful, very calm and polite—

*SLAM* "FIVE IM SO GLAD I FOUND YOU I HAD SUCH A WILD FREAKIN NIGHT MAN—"

Klaus is promptly teleported onto the porch in the rain by a very pissed off Five who was supervising Luther for the night

"You idiot! Your brother is sick and trying to get better in there! For once in your pathetic life will you just. stop. talking!?"

"Okay okay okay okay can we go back inside now it's cold :("

Five warps them both back inside

Klaus doesn't interrupt him or Luther's sleep for the rest of the period

Five is vv protective in his own, violently dysfunctional way

Victor is probably the most awkward about the situation

He's been sick, obviously, and he knows Luther can get sick, obviously

He just can't wrap his head around how he's able to help

He's by far the most quiet and mellow visitor that Luther could have that isn't boring (Pogo)

Usually, Victor will just talk to his brother about whatever either of them can think of

A lot of apologies come from both ends because they're both just two awkward brothers trying really hard to bond

In a way, it's nice, because they learn a lot about eachother this way

Luther learns how Victor realised he was transgender and learns what exactly that means going forward (pronouns, medicals, etc.)

Victor learns how Luther truly felt about being "Number 1" and how much pressure he feels to fit that name

"I never realised how difficult it was for you to just be yourself," is the mutual thought that they voice

it's met with obvious, joined laughter, because of course the other has no idea what it's like, but then there's an understanding

When Luther finally does get better, it's easy to see that he and his siblings are all a little closer; between having to co-ordinate with eachother and work together to tend to their brother and having to keep arguments slim "because it'll fuck up the healing process", they've all grown closer and more understanding of eachother

It's something they're sure their father would've resented seeing.
