#types of therapy

Does anyone know if there’s any kind of therapy for impulsive suicidal behaviour and self harm?
Or any cause? I don’t know why I’ve become this way. When I stop to think about it it’s scary.

Therapy Tuesday: Grief Therapy
While not a type of therapy in and of itself, grief therapy can help in processing large losses. Grief therapy isn’t restricted to recovering from someone’s death, either. It helps with any large loss. The loss of a job, a friendship, a romantic relationship, a pet, or any loss that leaves you struggling is what grief therapy is designed for. Also, there isn’t just one type of grief therapy.…

Types Of Therapy: Overview of Four Major Approaches
Tumblr media
Determining the most suitable therapeutic approach for you can be a daunting task, especially if you're seeking therapy for the first time. There are a multitude of therapy types available, and practitioners typically focus on their areas of expertise.
In order to provide some guidance on your therapy journey, we have provided an overview of four major therapy types and their approaches to give you insight into what you can expect.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Therapies, and Trauma-Focused Therapies are distinct therapeutic approaches with different focuses and techniques. Here's a brief summary and comparison:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
Focus: CBT addresses dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors, aiming to change negative patterns.
Techniques: It involves cognitive restructuring, identifying and challenging negative thoughts, and behavioral interventions.
Applications: Widely used for various mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and phobias.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT):
Focus: Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, DBT combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with acceptance and mindfulness strategies.
Techniques: Emphasis on emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and mindfulness.
Applications: Effective for individuals with emotion dysregulation, self-harm tendencies, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.
Mindfulness-Based Therapies:
Focus: Centered around mindfulness and awareness to promote mental well-being.
Techniques: Meditation, breathing exercises, and mindful awareness to cultivate a non-judgmental present-moment focus.
Applications: Used for stress reduction, anxiety, depression, and enhancing overall psychological resilience.
Trauma-Focused Therapies:
Focus: Tailored for individuals who have experienced trauma, addressing its impact on thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
Techniques: Specific trauma-focused interventions such as exposure therapy, cognitive processing therapy, or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).
Applications: Effective for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related symptoms.
Comparison:
CBT vs. DBT: While both involve cognitive restructuring, DBT incorporates acceptance and mindfulness, making it suitable for those with intense emotional struggles.
Mindfulness-Based Therapies vs. Others: Mindfulness therapies focus on present-moment awareness and acceptance, promoting a different approach compared to the more cognitive or trauma-focused methods.
Trauma-Focused Therapies' Uniqueness: Tailored specifically for trauma survivors, these therapies directly address the impact of traumatic experiences on mental health.
In summary, these therapies offer diverse approaches catering to different psychological needs, with CBT and DBT addressing a broad range of issues, mindfulness-based therapies promoting awareness and acceptance, and trauma-focused therapies specializing in trauma-related conditions. The choice of therapy depends on the individual's specific concerns and needs.
Conclusion
There are numerous therapy approaches available, and determining the most suitable option depends on your unique circumstances, personality, and objectives. The initiative you've taken to conduct research reflects a positive step towards accessing the support that aligns with your needs.
While it is prudent to seek a therapeutic approach tailored to your specific mental health needs or circumstances, it is crucial to bear in mind a few important considerations:
The strength of the therapeutic alliance, signifying your confidence in your therapist and their capacity to assist you, plays a pivotal role in your therapy success. This aspect is considered more significant than the specific therapeutic approach, as highlighted by the American Psychological Association.
Numerous therapists embrace a versatile approach by integrating various therapeutic methods, rather than restricting themselves to a single type of therapy.
Irrespective of the therapeutic method you ultimately prefer, it is essential to consider the qualifications, background, and overall approach of prospective therapists.
At Therapy Center of New York, the first ~10 minutes of your initial consultation session are designed to enable you and your therapist to learn about each other and help determine a mutual fit and positive rapport.
Keep in mind that therapy is a collaborative process involving both the client and therapist. Feel free to arrange an intake all with our office today to initiate your journey into therapy.

When Danny decides to reincarnate, centuries after his adventures, he chooses a random Dimension of Heroes and Villains.
He's expecting adventure! Heroics! A life worth bragging about in the Afterlife!
He wakes up in a tube, staring down at surprised teen heroes as they release him and another person.
Later, he finds out that he's a clone of Batman and Superman, and the other clone is of Superman and Lex Luthor.
He came into this world expecting adventures, not a weird custody battle about him and his brother (because that's what Conner is) between two A-List superheroes.

What Is EMDR Therapy? - July 11th, 2022
With such a wide range of therapy practices, you may have come across terms or acronyms such as CBT, DBT, Play Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Parent Child Interactive Therapy, and the list goes on.  It can feel daunting to navigate these terms and the best next steps in finding a therapist.  (And a disclaimer, if you are considering therapy or looking for a different therapy option, know that it is not on your shoulders to know all or even any of the terms.  Get connected with a therapist and let them help you navigate what works for you).  But if you are interested in learning about a specific approach, may I offer a bit of what I am learning about EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) was originally developed to support war veterans in healing from trauma.  It has now been adapted to focus on all individuals of any age with their unique present concerns.  This approach believes that past emotionally-charged experiences are interfering with present emotions, physical sensations and beliefs about oneself (such as “I feel worthless even though I know I have worth”).  EMDR helps to break through emotional blocks that may keep us feeling “stuck” in unhealthy patterns or unwanted emotional reactions.
Tumblr media
The most well-known and unique component of EMDR is that it uses rapid sets of eye movements to help process and re-conceptualize disturbing experiences, much like what occurs during the REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.  During REM sleep, our brains are attempting to process things that are troubling us.  EMDR is similar to this process, yet is more focused and intentional.  The EMDR therapist will assist their client in alternating between rapid eye movement, deep breathing, and reporting what they are noticing.  This process is what allows our brains to update memories to a healthier present perspective, while also decreasing the intensity of the negative emotion or physical sensation connected to disturbing thought.
EMDR might be considered a more wholistic approach to therapy, as it recognizes the impact of disturbing experiences on our whole being – mind, body and heart.  EMDR focuses on the brain’s ability to constantly learn, adapt, update and heal.
As a therapist who has both experienced EMDR therapy as well as practices EMDR, I have been amazed at the brain’s natural ability to heal.  This is a process that gently guides clients through difficult experiences safety, allowing them to remember and feel the emotion and sensation without getting stuck there.  This is absolutely an approach with the message of hope!
If you are interested in learning more about EMDR therapy, there is more information at the end of this blog.  You can also contact our CAFCA office to inquire more, or to request an EMDR therapist.

Therapy Tuesday: ACT Therapy - Part 3
C= Commitment Last week I reviewed the A in ACT. It includes acceptance, distancing from the emotions so you can name them without judgement (also called cognitive diffusion), and being present in the moment. From there we take a step into accepting that people, ourselves especially, are more than our thoughts or emotions. This is called “self as context.” The purpose of this step is to get us…
