Back in my hating DEH phase. Fucking hate that show and its message.
I feel like so many Dear Evan Hansen enjoyers like the show because of its music and its actors and the one gripe they usually choose with DEH critics is that they aren’t taking the story seriously. As if the only gripe with the show is “Evan Hansen impersonated a suicide victim so he could bone Connors sister”. But that’s not necessarily the problem. The problem is that Evan doesn’t get any backlash from the Murphys. Not really. And you can argue that forgiveness is important to the story but forgiveness is a choice. And Evan didn’t deserve forgiveness because what he did was awful and really fucking bad- and it doesn’t matter that he’s mentally ill. Being mentally ill doesn’t excuse you from responsibility. That’s why being mentally ill sucks.
And I feel like the show only works for people who aren’t chronically mentally ill- because it doesn’t accurately portray someone who is chronically mentally ill. We know that Evan Hansen is supposed to have GAD and because of that, depression. But why would that make him delusional? It wouldn’t. Evan knows he’s lying and feels bad about it but is so attached to the idea of having friends that he doesn’t want to give it up because he’s getting attention from lying. There are so many better ways for Evan to help his mental health that would not involve ruining his own life or destroying other peoples trust or turning literally “the internet” against the Murphys.
And it’s SO INFURIATING that the same year Evan Hansen SWEEPED the Tonys for its shitty gospel-esque church music and horrid portrayals of the mentally ill- Bandstand by Richard Orebacker, starring Corey Cott and Laura Osnes- a story that aptly portrays not only Anxiety and Depression but PTSD, Good and accurate portrayals of OCD, ADHD, Autism, and chronic pain. It had phenomenal choreography, true-to-form Gershwin inspired tracks and a unique perspective on Greif and DEH still left with 6 awards and bandstand left with 1

he is babygirl (he is a mentally ill teenager who is abusive to his sister and struggles with substance use, depression, and anxiety and probably bpd and the only idea i have of his personality stems from the lies of another incredibly mentally ill teenager)

I WAS WATCHIN DEH TIKTOKS AND I SWEAR TO MIKE FAIST- I DON'T WANNA HEAR ANOTHER WORD OF "So apparently in the movie *insert very real thing that happened in the book* and did that ever even happen in the original show?" LIKE OKAY I have not seen the movie (I do know the story though, duh, and I'mma watch the movie tomorrow) BUT I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT IT IS SO BAD THAT EVERY SINGLE PERSON ONLINE HAS TO HATE ON IT!!!! Also with the 'Ben Platt is too old' thing: I HAVE WATCHED CLIPS OF THE MOVIE AND HE DOES NOT LOOK TOO OLD TO ME!!!!!!! And are we gonna talk about how awesome Ben Platt is in general??? He has like, a wicked voice and is flat out amazing, and all we can talk about is how hes TO OLD FOR THE ROLE I'm sorry but no. I'll let ya'll know if I change my mind after watching the movie but- DEAR EVAN HANSEN SAVED MY LIFE SO PEOPLE CAN SHUT THE FUCK UP

aaaaa okay i don't normally post but i'm getting desperate and i need to ask tumblr
there's this fanfic i read like six years ago now, with evan x connor x jared, on wattpad i'm pretty sure.
i think connor was trans ftm, and it had jeremy and michael from bmc as supporting characters, and it ended with it revealing that the entire thing was in jareds head to cope with the reality of his life (connor committing, jeremy + michael being bullies etc), and it ends with him jumping out a tree

(Evan sits there for a moment, staring at the tie, paralyzed. Finally, he stands. He slowly puts on the tie, a certain reverence to this.)
this is a redraw, see a side by side with the previous 5 iterations here!

i was scrolling through the matt kemp tag and saw one of your posts about loving his evan and you are SO RIGHT. matt kemp is forever my fav evan, i saw him last year during his hometown performance and he was simply incredible (sorry to send an ask talking about a post i think you probably made forever ago, but god i don't see people talk about his evan enough).
Wait...did you see the Saturday matinee in Rochester?? Because if so, then we literally saw the exact same performance.
But yeah, he was IMMACULATE. I'd actually been praying for him to go on as Jared but seeing his Evan was such a blessing. He highlighted Evan's kindness and empathy at the beginning so perfectly, and then his downward spiral in Act 2 was unbelievably raw. I was way back in the balcony and I could still tell how wet his face was from all the sweat and tears and probably spit. You probably saw my post where I said it, but he really seemed to be aware of the physical side effects and stopping antidepressants and conscientiously showing how they affected Evan.

October 10 - Scars
Day 9 Day 11 All Days (Prompt list)
“Stop moving.”
“It’s taking so long.” Evan whined.
“Because you won’t stop moving.” Jared snapped. He grabbed Evan’s chin and shoved it upward again.
Evan’s neck felt like it was going to give out. He’d been at this angle, staring at the ceiling for nearly an hour. His tailbone hurt from sitting on the bathroom counter too. But Jared was intently focused on his work, oblivious to Evan’s suffering.
“How much longer?”
“Quit talking.” Jared said, dipping a brush into his red body paint.
Evan groaned until Jared flicked him.
“Okay.” Jared said a few minutes later. “Look at me.”
Evan lowered his head. It hurt. His neck was stiff and sore.
Jared studied him. “It looks pretty good.”
Evan turned around to look in the mirror. Across his neck was a large fake scar. Jared had used a mix of scar wax, body paint, fake blood, and a pack of cheap Halloween makeup. To be fair, he’d done a pretty good job for having no makeup experience. It really did look like Evan’s throat had been slit.
“Wow.” Evan touched the fake gash lightly. “It’s really good.”
“I know. I’m incredible.” Jared picked up the scar wax. “Turn around. I need to add some on your face and do a little bruising.”
Evan sighed but did as he was told. He was only letting Jared do this because they’d signed up to work in a haunted house for a little extra money and Evan certainly wasn’t going to attempt his own makeup.
Jared titled Evan’s face toward the light. He smoothed the wax out on Evan’s cheek with the tip of his finger. Evan closed his eyes because if they were open he just had to stare at Jared’s face and that made him fidgety.
“Oooh. That’s good. I’m so good.” Jared hummed, leaning back.
Evan felt his fingers prodding again, this time near Evan’s eyebrow. Then a brush, cold and wet, running over each spot.
“Open your eyes.”
Evan opened them.
Jared studied him. “It looks good. But you don’t look dead enough.”
He picked up the cheap three-dollar eyeshadow pallet he’d found at Spirit Halloween and rubbed his finger into a gray and then into a light blue.
“Look up.” He instructed.
Evan lifted his chin again.
“No stupid. Just your eyes.” Jared tilted Evan’s head back down and then started smearing the powder under his eyes. His touch was gentler than Evan had been expecting.
“Are we done after this?” Evan asked even though now that he wasn’t craning his neck, he didn’t mind so much.
“Art is never done.” Jared muttered, tilting his head to see if the eye bags were even. “It’s closer.”
He leaned closer and suddenly Evan could feel his heart pounding in his chest. He knew that Jared wasn’t going to kiss him but Jesus Christ did it feel like he was going to for just a split second.
Jared leaned back. “Needs more on the left.” He picked up the pallet again.
Once he was satisfied with Evan’s eyes, he returned to the scars, adding fresh fake blood to “spruce them up.”
Evan groaned and hung his head as Jared reached for the body paint again.
Jared tilted his chin up slightly. “Stay still.” He said softly.
Evan ignored that request. He leaned forward, just a little.
“That’s not staying still.” Jared said, and then he kissed Evan.
Evan pulled Jared closer, which made him realize how close Jared already was. Why was he standing so close in the first place? How did he expect Evan not to try and kiss him?
There was a soft thump that Evan ignored because he was preoccupied with the fact that he was still kissing Jared. Still tugging at his collar and still feeling arms around his waist.
“Work.” Jared said suddenly, pulling back. “We’re-we have work. We have to leave in like five.”
“Right.” Evan looked down and identified the thump he heard as Jared dropping the body paint onto the floor. For some reason that made him feel very satisfied. “So I’m done?”
“You’re done.” Jared patted his knee.
Evan hopped off the counter. He looked at himself in the mirror. He did look dead. Mostly.
“You need to look paler.” Jared commented, grabbing his mask from his desk. He’d lucked out in that department. No makeup for him.
“I don’t know if you know this,” Evan said, slipping his shoes on. “But I do not control the paleness of my skin. Besides, I’m pretty pale already.”
“No you’re not.” Jared looked back at him, grinning. “You’re blushing.” He grabbed Evan’s hand and pulled him to the stairs. “Come on. We’re gonna be late on day one.”
