So, one of my besties would do this A LOT where she would just switch into Spanish and I’d just be there like ???

So I thought it would be funny if you did that with Ais here

Imagine you’re in some kind of argument, a stupid, light one you know— and to annoy him

YOU JUST SWITCH INTO A WHOLE DIFFERENT LANGUAGE

He’s completely stunned, red eyes wide as you just start rambling, (very passionately) in a language he doesn’t understand

As you go on though, he just becomes utterly impressed, watching your mouth as he studies the words coming out of it (and just because he’s flirty LMAOOOO)

After you’ve had your fun, he comments something like “Impressive, Sparrow.” And then asks you, ofc, if you can teach him what you said

To tease him a bit more, you don’t tell him for a bit until he BRINGS OUT THESE GIANT PUPPY EYES

So you do start teaching him, just long evenings hunched over books or a paper as you teach him different phrases and words, the candle light dancing on his focused gaze.

And one day, out of the blue, he starts calling you Sparrow in the language you were speaking(and you also hear him practice words while talking with Princess—AND ITS SO ADORABLE)

After he’s becoming pretty good at it, you then proceed to tease other people(Leander) by randomly switching mid-conversation into a different language <33

NOW WITH THIS ONE, it reminded me of this really cool video of a guy switching between loads of languages in one song

Maybe it’s even one of his favorite songs ??? And hearing you sing it in so many languages would absolutely knock him off his feet.

Another thing I think he’d go CRAZY FOR

Pet names, in whatever language.

Like ?? You call him something like “Mi amor…” for Spanish, or “Tesoruccio.” For Italian ??

He’s done for. Doomed. Dead. Will beg you to repeat it over and over while he showers your hands or arms with kisses.

He’s also one that would definitely be okay with you calling these pet names in public—he wants to be all smug that HES the one called yours.

He probably also learns whatever language you speak as well, might already know it because bro probably had tutors that taught him so many languages man.

In return for the pet names, he probably calls you something like “λατρεία μου” or “latria mu” (My adored !!! 🥹 in greek)

Kuras

NOW, THIS IS INTERESTING

I’m guessing since Kuras is an Angel, he knows like ??? Every language?

So when he finds out you speak others, he’s instantly curious, impressed, and now it’s quiz time.

You pass by a certain object, plant, anything, and he asks you how to say it in your language(s). Even if he may already know, he likes to hear it coming from you, enjoying the glint in your eyes as you explain things.

Another thing he’ll do, is when you’re having a library date, he’ll hand you a book and request you translate it. Either from your language to—whatever language people speak in Eridia ?? Or from that language to yours.

These will turn into nightly strolls with you translating a poem or book as he strides beside you, golden eyes locked on every word.

In return, he’ll translate whatever text into a language you don’t know. (I wonder if angels have a specific language??)

A name for him, I think it’d be cute if you called him 아름다운 천사 (Beautiful Angel in Korean !!)

Whether this is after or before you know he’s an Angel, he finds it both amusing and endearing. (Or painfully ironic if his life as an Angel is a tough subject)

Mhin

OKAY SOSOSOSOSO !! Mhin evidently thirsts for knowledge, they’re a lil nerd and they’re rlly bad at hiding it (A mood really. one of the reasons I love them <3) and my friend mentioned they’re more of a listener? So like I can see them just—paying very close attention to every word you say

At times they may not seem to be listening to you as you ramble, or catch a few words of slang from your language(s). But they’re actually secretly a sponge and soak up every little detail.

And now this may be just me but Mhin gives off such I must impress you with all my random facts vibes.

They ask questions about the languages you speak, the slang, the meanings, how to pronounce things correctly, everything

And then they do their own research, soaking up all they can before appearing to you one day and just starting the conversation in your language(s)

When you show any sign of being impressed, they will look away blushing and try to act cool but nahhh buddy you aren’t fooling anyone we know you spent forever working on that

Similar to Ais, lots of late night lessons where you get to teach Mhin about your language(s)! Just you two looming over an open book, Mhin scribbling down notes, looking so concentrated and you even spot a smile starting to form as they start getting better and better. (I love themmmmm 😭)

Mhin asks you to quiz them a lot, and looks so !! !! Just proud of themself when they pass. (Before realizing it and their self loathing kicks in and they revert back to >:( ) You want to tell them that they don’t need to be quizzed but look at their face !! Let them impress you okay !! They’re top 1 student !!

If you want you can joke about them having to call you Professor(Mc) or something but ur just gonna get a deep frown and glare like 😒 nuh uh AHAHSHS

Vere

Ohhh vere my nemesis. (He’s the toughest for me to write i have to like mentally and physically ambush him in a fast food parking lot before I can get anything outta him)

(I love him so much though so here we go !! Thanks to my friend for giving me a lot of help in this one because otherwise I’d be a doomed woman)

My friend brought up since he’s a fox, he’s very sensitive to sound !! So when you’re speaking in your mother language, he notices how your tone might change, watches as your tongue moves against your teeth or the top of your mouth, idk but he makes it a sensual thing somehow 😭

Definitely flirts with you in your language(s), says the most outrageous thing and watches as you get stunned or flustered by it, absolutely delighted that no one but you (or anyone who’s unfortunately being nosy and can understand) knows what he’s saying.

Okay this may be dumb but it’s so funny to me imagine Vere like putting on his most smooth, seductive tone, convincing the people around that he’s gonna say like the most erotic thing but he ends up just saying something like 💀 “Avocados” in your language(s) or like “Leander looks like a chicken breast” he does it to see you laugh but also because Leander overhears and could tell his name was said and thinks Vere is like— finally coming around but only you two rlly know Vere is just sexily roasting him.

Due to recent lore being dropped, and in his lil character sheet, it says Vere has a huge love for the arts. I think it’d be really neat if you introduced him to things specifically written in your language(s) !! Like books that originated from your country, plays that are only acted in that language(s), just a tour of the language! And if he doesn’t know your languages(s) then teaching him is gonna be like 💀 somehow so flirty

Will definitely call you Professor(Mc) but he makes it sound absolutely horrendous and cringey and you will regret it you probably should turn back

Jokingly will ask if you’ll give him a golden sticker if he behaves—do it, just to humble him.

OKAY this is a long one but I dont see people talk about Grace and I deeply adore her shes my second favorite (almost tied with first (Qi) tbh) and deserves more love.

Heres the line that I pretty much based this on:

When I fist saw that line I was like oh thats interesting but then I learned about what she was and I was like OH MY GOD SHES TALKING ABOUT HERSELF. Because what are the chances she just happens to have a sister with a very similar job as her, and the wouldnt you get sick of a life like that implies she doesnt like her job even if she does actually have a sister.

(Also this line from her engagement letter)

NOW THINGS THAT I IMPLY THAT ARE NOT CERTAIN BUT ARE TRUE TO ME (you do not have to read this to understand anything I just want to talk about her):

She genuinely is interested in archeology. Her collecting various things for archeolgy could have just been her making herself seem more convincing, but she does genuinely seem very informed on the topic. AGAIN, could be her being more convincing, but I wouldnt doubt if she actually majored in it (or at least took a few classes) because it would make sense to play a character with something youre kind of knowlegable about, and she seems to know quite a bit about specific school practices and genuinely be opinionated on archeology's place in the world. Also, her likes indicate this is something shes genuinely interested in and passionate about. THE DIGGING HOLES IN THE GARDEN THING ALSO IS NOT MADE UP, and she says "Old habits die hard I guess", implying (at least to me) that she did it for similar reasons or maybe that she found something that inspired her to be interested in archeology.

She definetly seems to not really have faith in the system shes in, or at least doubt in it. Im not saying shes radical or anything (IF WE ARE GETTING SPECIFIC (Using current day terms) she seems reasonably moderate, pretty center left yk but I wouldnt be surprised if she believed in more socialist policies and shes clearly informed in whats going on, partially because of her job and also because I think being informed is important to her) and she still does work for the government, but she seems to not really be completely content with it. I dont really have any concrete proof for that besides this line which is really just how she thinks:

NOW she says she wasnt really involved in politics, which I think at the time shes saying this is true. I wouldnt be surprised if she was more involved when she was younger, but I think for the most part she has ideas. She really likes to think (also proved by this line, I think she thinks a lot of thoughts in a similar vein but for the most part doesnt share them because they dont really fit her brand) and I feel like that would translate more into thinking more of ideals than actual politics, especially since she feels like people who are noble and want to make a difference cannot under the current system.

I feel like there were more lines in quests and what not with her being more disillusioned but full disclosure this could entirely be an illlusion of the mind palace.

Since she also mentions specifically making a difference, I also decided to extrapolate that was strongly about her as well. Wanting to make a difference being attatched to her choosing the job is also something not said at all, but something I decided to connect because it makes sm sense to me

I THINK THATS ALL. But a lot of this is largely headcanon since we dont have that much info on her (Character development is still low, therefore I cry and sob and make things up completely BECAUSE ITS FUN.)

Summer wedding: Thanksgiving before the separation drabble

He goes to grt the biggest.

"What are you doing?"

"What its a turkey? Go big or go home."

"How about go big and have to wake up at 3 am to cook it."

"Oh," he thought for a second "but I want to give you and Maya the best Thanksgiving ever so that's fine."

"Ari and what are we going to do with the leftovers? "

"Who said anything about leftovers?" he was rubbing his stomach. 

"Fine but when you're bloated and gassy don't come to me complaining. "

I still grabbed him some Tums and gas-x and some kid medicine for Maya just incase. 

"Ok" I said as Ari wrapped his hands around my shoulders,

"We got Turkey, stuffing, pie cranberry sauce and real cranberries, corn muffin mix, we can just buy them you know."

"No I am making it."

Thank god I didn't tell Ari about making your own stuffing then we'd probably never eat. And I was also smart enough to tell him cranberry sauce is just mushed cranberries and sugar and that half the fun is how it comes out in the shape of a can  "Gravy don't its my favorite gravy you can make yours too from whatever but just in case, biscuits, butter and  We just need ice cream and cookie dough."

"Ice cream and cookie dough?"

"Yea me and Maya need to eat something before you finish cooking. 

Maya flew in the night before Thanksgiving and she was so excited to experience a "real American Thanksgiving." It was practically impossible to get her to bed. But after three stories and if your father doesn't get to sleep now so he can wake up, well never eat explication she closed her eyes.

I layed back in bed tired I thought Ari was too but he has this smile.

"What are you so happy about?" I turned on my side to face him. 

"I've got everyone I love under one roof.  You're happy,  Maya's happy. What else could a man want?"

Ari was happy. He wasn't sure how he ever found love again but he did and it was even stronger. He was happy just holding her pinkie. There was something about her smile that just made him feel fulfilled, whole. And holding her was heaven all the nightmare about bullets and prisons, holding her just eased it all away into oblivion. 

He gave her a kiss, "you tired?" 

"Yes" she giggled and rolled her eyes. "Your daughter is right down the hall and you have to get up early did yiu set the alarm.

"Yes" he rolled his eyes 

"Don't. I want to eat before 9pm and trust me that's happened. And you know I get hangry." 

Ari turned on his side with a smirk.but really her hangery… she should join mossad though, things would get done faster.

"What are you doing?" 

"Going to sleep like you asked" he sighed.

"Two can play that game" she thought. 

"You always hold me." She said with a whimper and sniffle.

He turned over with an immediate "babe come here im sorry."

"He was too easy," she thought h. But it's true he'd walk over hot coals for her without a thought. He pulled her in close and gave her another kiss.

"You knew I was only teasing baby right?"

"Well I was hoping."

He was just studying her face for a moment or two swiping his thumb across her cheek before wrapping his arm around her waist. 

"What?" She asked with a bit of a smile.

"You're so beautiful. I love you so much you know that right?" He was sincere and she was blushing.

"Ari where is this coming from?"

"I just feel so happy, blessed to have my , my family under one roof. I'm just-"

There was a knock on the door 

"Glad we just kissed aren't 'cha." He rolled his eyes but she was right. 

"You can come in sweetheart."

"Abba I had a nightmare. A giant turkey was chasing me."

"Oh no!  Well I can promise you there are no turkeys around here.  Minus your father. He's a big 'ol turkey."

"I thought we were having turkey tomorrow."

"We are but its all ready to be cooked ok no turkeys are alive in the state."

"You promise?"

"I promise."

Ari watched the scene gaining from ear to ear as he played with his girlfriends hair. She being used to it didn't pay any attention but this family scene made him happy. So happy.  Maya felt comfortable seeing comfort in his girlfriend not just with him. 

"You want someone to tuck you back in?"

"No I'm ok as long as you promise no yurkey."

"No turkeys."

"Goodnight Maya 

"Goodni-" was all Ari could get out before Maya closed the door. 

"Well I'm insulted."

"She likes me better"

Ari smirked as she stuck her tongue out. 

"Not too fond of your attitude"

"Oh yea you gunna fix it?"

"No I've got a turkey to cook. I need my sleep." He crossed his arms

"What hey I thought we were cuddling."

"Sorry babe come here." He opened his arms and she rushed close to his heart. She loved hearing his heart beat.  It was slow and soothing. And Ari couldn't sleep without her warmth the way her lips just brush against the base of his neckline at time or how her hand had seemed to lay claim to his body as he would never move it once she had fallen asleep. Holding her was something he  could never give up. He watched for sleep for a while and then pulled her closer.

"Ari go to sleep" she sounded a bit drunk but she always did she when she said this in the middle of the night. Somehow she always knew when his mind needed to be told to rest. So he kissed her forehead.

"Yes my love" she smiled and with that he went to sleep. And he'd need it because the next day he really regretted buying the biggest turkey.

First Fic - God, I think my first fic was some spin off of a teenage spy series on wattpad *shudders* but my first ao3 fic was a silly little abandoned newsies fic which was. Interesting. I will not link it but its up for archive purposes, I owe @radioactivepigeons a lot for the encouragement, not sure if I would be still writing now if it wasn't for that kindness :)

Latest Fic - is Queer Eye-Eye Captain! Which is an ofmd queer eye au and I will link it because it took me a year to write and I think its very fun. Its my first 'long fic' (ie. Its over like,, 2K) and it took a lot of effort to actually finish it instead of getting excited, posting it, and abandoning it 😅

Fic in a Fandom I Only Wrote Once For - there are a couple but I think we'll go with There's No Such Thing as Stupid Pain which is a little startrek disco one I wrote after a night shift when I hurt from lifting a patient weird. I adore startrek discovery but I've just never written anything else for it yk?

Favourite Fic in the Fandom I Wrote Most For - are any of us surprised that its newsies after my train wreck of a brain (and bank account) last year? I think my favourite is probably Go to Bed just because its cute and I like the UK Davey/Crutchie dynamic, with an honourable mention to Hear Her Voice and Hear it Still which isn't that well written but I love the concept for.

Fic I Wish More People Read - ooh hard one, maybe I am to See to it That I Do Not Lose You which was for the fic exchange, just because I wrote and rewrite it So. Many. Times.

Fic I Agonised Over the Most - It is what it is because it's an excerpt of a much larger fic sitting planned out in my wips that I really want to write but idk if it will ever happen. Shout out to Build a Problem which I accidentally abandoned bc it started sounding too much like something I would write in high school and it needs serious revisions

Fic that Sprang Fully Formed - Babywipe Blues it's only little but it practically wrote itself, only took me 10 minutes. Amazing what procrastination can do.

And a Work I'm Proud of - Queer Eye-Eye Captain! Again just because I'm loving it now and also You're Safe Now because even though I don't love how it was written now, someone liked it enough to translate it into French which I think is very cool :)

18. Do you enjoy research? Which fic of yours required the most research?

I don't enjoy research! Which is why I try to avoid it when writing fic for fun and general Writing Practice (well, I do fact check things like "how does blood work" and "how long do bones heal" and other details that are important to the plot, but I won't be going on Wikipedia dives or anything like that). If/when I write something with the intent of it being Published, though, I think I won't mind researching as much because. you know. it would be a more high-effort project all around

As to the fic that required the most research, probably The Breach, just because it's long and the plot relies on LogisticsTM a lot more. I've had to look up stuff about tourniquets, drowning (I think), tried to figure out what a room in a train car would be called in the Victorian era (I still don't know) and for a while checked Google Ngram a lot to make sure I didn't use words that were too modern. I kind of gave up on that last one, though, because it made writing a lot more exhausting and, also, I remembered that Candela Obscura (the setting I'm loosely basing the fic on) doesn't limit its characters' vocabulary like that and still gets the gaslamp vibe across. I still try to avoid words that interfere with The Vibe too much, though.

25. What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?

I think this happens on different stages for different fics, but I love the moment where things just click into place. For The Breach, it's outlining, specifically figuring out the exact sequence of scenes for the next part and how to combine the different POVs; for Cold Water (my recent Pillars of Eternity fic) it was weirdly the editing stage. I would write a chapter, go "eh, needs improvement", go away, and then I would come back to it a while later and just move some words around and it would suddenly turn into something Really Cool.

So, I guess the general answer is that my favorite thing is figuring out the flow of the fic! Whether it's on a line-by-line level or on a plot level.

There's several on there I'm curious about but imma narrow it down a bit ^^; I saw Dragonriders and Dragon x Slayer and got all jazzed cause Dragons. Unicorn Field Guide and Arc of Magic sounds interesting, but then I spotted Lancer Yoko and almost shot out of my seat, PLEASE tell me about it. (also a bit unrelated but I love that I recognise several of these titles/au's. all of em are great too)

Putting this under a cut cause it'll get long

Starting with the one that's the least fleshed out, the Dragonriders AU is, well. it's a dragonrider au lol. All the main Arc V characters have dragons, and it's a fantasy world that semi-similar to something like Eragon crossed with Dragonriders of Pern, but you know, legally distinct.

I was doing designs for some of the dragons for them, like translating Odd-Eyes into a more traditional looking dragon and such. I didn't really have too much more to go on, so it might end up being more an aesthetic doodle thing than a fully fleshed project, but i dare to dream lol.

Dragon x Slayer is a sort of original fantasy world with Arc V characters, where there is this mountain range where the kingdom of dragons is, and it's cut off from the rest of the world by a magical barrier that prevents dragons from leaving. It was put there hundreds of years ago after a war between humans and dragons that the dragons supposedly lost, ending up with them being sealed away. Meanwhile, in the human world, adept humans go to an academy to learn how to be slayers, to kill dragons that manage to pass through the barrier before they can kill humans.

The longest story short, the dragon boys are all of course dragons in this au, with the ability to shift into human forms. They are the sons of the dragon king Zarc, who has become dangerously unstable since the barrier was erected. The dragon boys each find their own ways to sneak out from under Zarc's increasingly strict eye in order to explore, and one by one they all meet humans for various reasons, who come to learn that the dragons aren't necessarily as dangerous as they were led to believe. Reiji, for example, is a top of his class slayer who was tasked to enter the barrier and kill a dragon as part of his graduation exam, but he was injured during his time in the mountains and rescued/nursed back to health by Yuya.

The basic crux of this one is that the leaders of both factions (Zarc and Leo) are becoming increasingly warlike against each other while the people underneath them are trying to find ways to make connections with each other and mend the rift between the two kingdoms.

The Unicorn Field Guide is in its most basic early stages, but this one is basically one of those fun fake field guides a la Dragonology about my concept for unicorns in my fantasy universe. Basically, unicorns are a universal constant that seem to spring up out of nothing and are anthropomorphized concepts of natural forces (stars, trees, oceans, etc), and the field guide is like a scientist going around to different dimensions and cataloging all the unicorns they find there. This is mostly an excuse for me to get to draw lots of unicorns lol.

Arc of Magic is another Arc V AU lol. this time it's a retelling of my favorite middle grade fantasy series, Avalon Web of Magic. Basically, Yuzu, Ruri, and Selena (Rin joins up later) are regular girls from the real world who are tasked to become mages in order to defend another fantasy world from the destructive spread of the Sorceress and her corruptive magic that is killing the magical animals. Also Yuya is a ferret.

Lancer Yoko is a canon divergence where after the events of the Battle Royale, Yoko marches up to Reiji and pretty much demands that he let her join up with everyone because like hell is she letting Yuya go off on his own and she needs to go get Yuzu back for Shuzo anyway (girl's practically her daughter tbf lol). She mostly acts as a sort of coach/trainer for the other Lancers and helps Reiji develop unique action fields for each of them (because i think crossover, while a function of the story and also easy to animate, is boring) that play to their strengths to help them have an edge over their opponents.

I didn't get very far with my notes for this one, but I think I'd still have her separated from Yuya at the prison arc, cause as much as I love her I don't think Yuya would really grow if his mom was hovering over him too much lol. Instead I think she'd get teleported along to wherever Reiji was in Synchro arc because on the other hand, Reiji stands to benefit immensely from having a real mother hovering over him lolllllllll

◉ Congratulations! You should commemorate this because this is email number 1! For that reason, I’m answering this. But four questions is too much, so I’ll just answer one. Regarding your first question, there are parts of myself that resemble the first person narrators that appear in my novels, but there are even more ways I do not resemble them. And I feel like for each novel, the parts that are similar and dissimilar vary in different ways. Or rather, it may be better to think of those narrators as “the me who I had the potential of being.” This is called “subjunctive past perfect” in English. It’s “the one I could have been, if…” Perhaps the fun in writing novels is trying out this subjunctive mood. Because it’s something you can’t do in real life.

#002: If I wrote it now, I could have written it better…

◎ My favorite work of yours is “Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World.” I met this book in January of 2014. It was written almost 30 years ago yet it hasn’t lost its freshness. In fact I think there are a lot of things in it that still resonates with present day society. My heart trembled when I finished reading it.

I have since reread it a number of times.

You often say in interviews and such that you could have written that work better if you wrote it now. ◉ You’re 19, right? This is pretty obvious to say but I too was 19 once. It was a terrible period in which the world felt like it would turn over. And yet the world is not something that could easily be turned over. At that time, I think the most important thing in my life was to take in as much material as I could, and analyzing all that material took many years. That's why I think the most important thing for you now is to gather as much material and to store them neatly. You can think about what these experiences mean in your own time later on. For now I think it would be good for you to read lots of books, meet as many people as you can, fall in love deeply if it’s possible, and worry to the point of not understanding anything anymore. That's what I did back then.

Ripley likes when eight holds their face? Or squish their cheeks . Or headpats. :^) they are embarassed about it though (cus what if she thinks its annoying etc. She doesnt but still) so they never told eight outright, she kind of discovers it on accident lol but hey she likes touching ripley's face so it all works out! It makes them feel pretty, a little bit.

When ripley has trouble sleeping (which is often so to be more accurate : when eight notices that ripley has trouble sleeping) eight will talk to them about whatever is on her mind, recite a few lines of whatever poem she's been thinking about, maybe even sing a little... though they feel guilty about keeping her awake. her voice really helps them relax.

Ripley kind of mumble songs Sometimes... one might call this singing even. But its not also lol. It makes eight really happy to hear them "singing" for no reasons but they are way too shy to do this if its not literally karaoke night 99% of the time. they only do it when they think they're alone or that eight is sleeping or smth. The song they hum is usally some daisy bell old songs type. Of songs ok the word song is there too many tile anyway

Ok one more thing. They can actually go wild on karaoke nights though since singing is The Point so might as well. But usually only if they duet w eight or a friend at least....theyd have trouble on their own(they sing as badly as possible on purpose...)

Ripley got their ear lobes pierced at the same time as eight lol. She was asking them what kind of earrings she should get once she gets them pierced and they were like idk i never had earrings before. "What ! But why?" "Idk,? Im not a big jewelry girl i guess. Also not allowed when doing agent work so" eight got a pair of gold sun earrings and got ripley a pair of silver stars("uh ripley, what is your favorite time?" "Like of the day? Night time, peace and quiet... why?" "No reason ! ^_^"

They both can be.. Chivalrous? yeah. toward the other in a way... so sometimes alex or other ppl have to witness their opening-the-door-for-the-other-first wars and shit like that. Which is Very funny to Me

When they carry groceries back home ripley always tries(and usually succeeds a little bit at least) to take the bags that eight carries

Ripley learnt/learns octarian for eight👍 every now and then ripley makes sure to compliment her in her own language etc.. also its practical to translate for her when she forgets a word, or its meaning.

They both have matching keychains somewhat... Eight has an orange inkling squid form keychain And Ripley a pink octo :)

Eight likes puzzles ! She thinks its fun to try and complete one with ripley every now and then.... but they dont always have the patience for them and sometimes try to brute force them, its okay though, eight thinks its funny lol. Plus it works sometimes so...

They have a plush of the other :^) eight made one of herself, ripley and alex after alex joked about how itd be funny if they were "marketable plushies"(the meme etc). They look very wonky but are greatly treasured.Ripley keeps theirs at home but eight actually takes plush ripley with her outside sometimes. Takes pictures etc and sends them to ripley LOL

ripley knew... one(1) magic trick (the coin one where you make the coin disappear but then you pull it out from behind the ear). Learnt it as a kid, was watching a show on the tv (the one at home was Very broken at that time...) of the local shop lol... then the owner saw them and they ran away. One day she does it on eight and shes like. "Woah !?" Cus she never saw a magic trick before LOL even a classic like that, and she tries to guess how it works etc. After a few guesses she understands how, and since then ripley tries to learn new tricks for eight to figure out... a small thing they have between the two of them

Ripley doesn't consider themself to be too good at writing stuff but they felt bad about not at least trying to write a poem for eight considering how many she wrote of/for them sooo they tried to write one.... Their handwriting is usually shit so and spent hours following a calligraphy tutorial LOL. Bought fancy paper etc... theeeen when it was time to read it to eight they lost All Confidence so they just gave her the poem for her to read. And she does ! she starts to get teary eyed in the middle of the poem and ripley's all like "oh shit is it that bad?? Im so sorry" but no... she loves it ! She now has the poem with her always... follded,in the inside of her phone cover

Ripley isn't too good at showing affection in public spaces beyond hand holding and like semi hugs cus theyre shy (but also its like. "Well id feel horrible if people thought badly of eight due to the fact that shes with an ugly lil thing like me... i dont know...") they dont mind if eight is the one kissing them they just have trouble being the one to do so... but sometimes they get brave and give the back of her hand a lil smooch prince kiss style LOL . Or a small kiss on the forehead :^)

Eight has a picture of ripley as her phone's lockscreen, and ripley has a picture of eight as their phone's home screen :^)

When ripley is in a very good mood they will lift eight off of her feet and spin around when they hug her ^_^ eight likes it it's funny... and cute.

When they hold hands, eight gives ripley's hand a lil squeeze every now and then :^). Ripley. like.. rubs the back of her hand with their thumb?

Interview with Golden Brown (December 2023)

Golden Brown is the work of Stefan Beck. This year, on Inner Islands, he released Weird Choices back in February and Wide Ranging Rider in September. Here we get to hear more about his creative practice and other musical endeavors from this year.

1. What are some recent inspirations?

I was lucky enough recently to see Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Zakir Hussain, and Rakesh Chaurasia play live. It was an absolutely mind blowing performance that I'll carry with me for a long time. Their album As We Speak has been a favorite of mine this year and it was such a treat to see this music live. Four brilliant musicians playing acoustic instruments, they create this amazing sound that is somehow greater than the sum of its parts, even though they are all absolute masters of their instruments. Zakir Hussain is a mad genius of rhythm and the most melody forward percussionist I have ever seen live.

2. You have been playing live a fair bit this year. How has it been translating your pieces into the live realm? Do you take a different approach from the studio versions?

It's been fun trying different approaches with live versions of songs. They do usually take on a different character than the recorded versions. With some of the Wide Ranging Rider songs, this has involved changing from acoustic to electric guitar and incorporating some effects. A few times I've experimented with weaving a few songs into a flowing suite if they are all in the same key/tuning. I try to do things a little differently each time, improvising and changing arrangements. One of my favorite gigs this year was opening for the River Arkansas at the Fox Theater in Boulder. I was lucky enough to have my friends Macon and Robin from the River Arkansas play bass and drums with me on a few songs. They are super talented, intuitive musicians and brought such a fun and different vibe to the music.

3. How composed vs. improvised are the pieces on Wide Ranging Rider? There are obviously strong melodic motifs in every piece, but are there also sections that are more freeform?

Wide Ranging Rider is the first Golden Brown album to be fully written throughout prior to recording. I usually rely on some of the serendipity of layering improvisations when making music, so this felt really different. Improvisation played into some of the arrangements with the additional textural elements of electric guitar and keyboards on songs like Ambergris and Dusty, but the fingerpicked acoustic guitar for each piece was fully realized prior to recording. 

4. How do you write a piece like Wide Ranging Ride I or II? Is it following a feeling or trying to capture an image? How does it go for you?

I didn't have a specific image or feeling in mind when writing, but there is a certain energy that flows throughout. It's kind of tough for me to put into words, but there definitely is shared DNA between those two pieces as well as Little Rider and Withywindle. Similarly, Cobwebs and Sage and Scurvy have some melodic elements and vibe in common.

Wide Ranging Rider I has been something I have been playing for about 20 years, but didn't feel complete until WRR II came about. I was writing a lot in open G tuning (DGDGBD), and at some point realized that several of the themes I was working on were connected. Originally, WRR I & II were arranged into a single long suite, with WRR II sandwiched in the middle of WRR I. Eventually, I decided I preferred them split into separate pieces to open each side of the LP. But I may try and play the full suite live at some point.

Wide Ranging Rider I and II as well as Kirghiz Light are linear compositions. The form is something closer to ABCDEFGA rather than a more typical progression of like ABABCB or ABA.

5. Do you feel like your work with the guys in Prairiewolf has influenced your solo work at all?

I do! It's been really wonderful making music collaboratively in addition to my solo pursuits. And I am lucky to have Tyler and Jeremy as bandmates who I can bounce ideas off of. The most apparent influence is on some music I'm working on for release in 2024 hopefully - it's kind of my version of a Bill Laswell style ambient dub album. I used a drum machine for a few of the songs, a first for me as Golden Brown. I had a lot of fun running the drum machine through my effects and kind of live dubbing the rhythm track as I recorded it. And Jeremy was kind of enough to play some synth and keyboards on one of the songs. It's pretty different in sound from most of what I've done before, though High Tide at Gold Beach (2012) is probably closest. The end result I think will be the most Prairiewolfish I've made music under the name Golden Brown.

6. How did the Prairiewolf group come together? The three of you fit together in such a nice and seamless way.

It was serendipitous for sure. We had all sort of met online and gathered to try it out in early 2022. It wasn't perfect from the get go but there was definitely some synergy there. It's been really fun to watch it develop. Jeremy and Tyler both are really good listeners as well as excellent musicians, and we share a lot of common musical ground. I try not to take it for granted that it works as well as it does. We are working on our second album together and it's pretty exciting. We have a good batch of songs, more than we can fit on one album, and it seems like we are continually coming up with more. We've also leaned into playing live this year and have gotten into some good zones as a result. 

7. Who might a dream collaborator be with someone from an older generation?

Bill Frisell for sure. I can't think of anyone who's had a bigger impact on my music. My dream would be to have a musical voice as emotive, singular, and recognizable as Bill Frisell. My dad first played Good Dog, Happy Man for me over twenty years ago and that music has become integral to me as a musician. I love almost everything Frisell has done but that album, Ghost Town, Nashville, and the Intercontinentals are very special.

8. Do you have any rituals to get you in the zone to work on music?

Not really, often it's just a matter of playing and trying different things until the conscious part of the mind turns off and I am relying more on my instincts. Sometimes that can happen quickly, sometimes it can take a long time. And sometimes in the moment, I have no idea whether what I'm working on is good or not and just need to set it aside for a listen with fresh ears later on. But the one thing that does really help is having my little music room downstairs - to be able to play whenever I feel like it without having to set up/take down makes a big difference in terms of getting in the flow.

9. You had mentioned that The Actual Star was an influence on your Weird Choices album. Were there any literary inspirations on Wide Ranging Rider?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy was definitely an influence. Withywindle is named for the river valley in the old forest where the hobbits encounter Tom Bombadil. I felt like the melody/picking pattern kind of reminded me of Tom Bombadil bopping along through the forest. Jeff Vandermeer was also an influence, more on Ambergris than anything else (maybe with the juxtaposition of the natural/organic element of the acoustic guitar with the modified, delayed sounds of electric guitar and keyboard.) But I was also reading his Southern Reach Trilogy when a lot of the music on Wide Ranging Rider was being written and arranged, so there is probably more influence there under the surface as well.

10. Words of wisdom you like to recall in times of need?

Robert Hunter's and John Perry Barlow's lyrics from the Grateful Dead songbook have deeply soaked into the core of my being. I have a list of affirmations from Dead lyrics that is an endless wellspring of solace and inspiration. Apologies in advance, this is extra nerdy.

I've been meaning to say this earlier, but I was scrolling through a tag of yours and saw you talk in ancient Greek and it reminded me that you *do* in fact know ancient Greek and that is so, so fascinating to me, goodness gracious. I believe the tag had something to do with not being able to capture the emotion properly in English, which intrigued me supremely. Are you self-taught or did you grow up with it?

I love Ancient Greek so much! Practicing it is one of my favorite hobbies! I’m not smart enough to be self-taught, but I was extremely lucky that I got the opportunity to learn it for free a few years ago- so now I just keep up with it for fun! I absolutely would recommend it to anyone interested in learning! (or any dead language for that matter!)

I definitley think that Ancient Greek matches my way of thinking better than English (maybe it’s because of my particular neurodivergencies… I’m not sure!). It’s definitely a life goal to become fluent in it :)

Are you interested in learning it by chance??

One of the things I love about languages is that each one captures something different about the human mind, and idk in the moment my emotions just really wanted to be expressed in Greek! All I could think when I saw Oswald in that gifset was “σμικρος” (pronounces smeekros). “μικρος” means “small”, and adding the “s” at the beginning makes it this super cute diminutive. And then after that my brain just switched to Greek and it was the only way to communicate the rest of how I felt lol.

Ok I’m going to geek out about translating now I apologize in advance…

(I’m also going to embarrass myself a little here lol), but if you translate it literally, it says, “he is both very tiny and I love him the most! But god why! Ai! My heart grows because of great love!”

But ofc, every language has its own “vibes”, so if you “converted” it to English vibes, the translation is more accurate. So it’s more like: “he’s so small and cute and I love him so so much! Ahhhhh god why do I love him so much!! My hearting is melting because of it!”

But the vibes are still unique to the Greek, and it matches my brain-flow better, so that’s why my brain wrote it in Greek instead of just writing the paragraph above in English.

Ok this post is getting super long but I can’t stop talking, so I’m going to put some Greek details under the cut, but no pressure to read it if you don’t find it interesting! /gen

“τε… τε και” can be translated as “both...and”, but “και...και”  is also used to say “both...and”. So “τε… τε και” is more like “this one thing! But also this other thing!”

and by putting “ο” (“he”) before the “τε” (which you wouldnt do with “και”), you can really emphasize the subject

Ofc there’s “σμικρος” instead of “small”.

Another thing is that in English we say “very” and “the most”, but in Greek it’s “μαλα” and “μαλιστα”- so you’re like adding on an ending to the word to kinda show that overflowing feeling.

The “αλλα δια τι! αι!” is a very Ancient Greek exclamation that I love to use- it literally is just “but WHY! Ah!”, but using “αι” (ai) instead of the synonym “οιμοι” (oi moi) gives more a sense of shock than grievance.

“η καρδια μοι” is “my heart”, except “μοι” is more often used than “μου”- so instead of being “the heart of me”, it’s literally “the heart to me”, which gives me this more unique sense of possession that I really like.

In English, we would say “my heart melts for him”, but using “δια” as the “for” really creates a sense of cause (like “he’s the cause of my heart-melt”), which feels like a more powerful way of saying it.

But yeah basically all these little differences add up and makes it feel different than expressing the emotions in English!

Trailer Breakdown!! Part One?

I'm really not sure how to feel about these two. neither of their designs really jump out to me.

It does seem kind of interesting that they seem to be very different in terms of one looking very modern and the other looking more long time ago. Is that going to be a difference between the two schools? That one wants to adopt modern ideas and practices and technology and the other wishes to remain close to their roots and never change? That could potentially be the driving conflict here, with both of them eventually resolving it in the end and compromising about still participating in their culture while also adopting new ways to make things easier.

Now, on to the designs. Let's start with the violet one first because it seems slightly more interesting to me.

Well first of all, an electric typing seems inevitable. I actually really like this design from the waist up. It's just those jets?? on its legs?? that i'm not really a fan of. I love it's sleek form and I'm always a fan of arms in that shape with those claws. I think it's just a very fun set of proportions. The puff of the chest is kind of fun to me, looks a little silly but i like it. reminds me of a frog croaking. The face is really good. I love the shape of it and it's actually really cute. I also like the little lighting shaped thingys? on its head. They aren't my favorite part of the design but they aren't bad either. What i really enjoy are all the grooves on it that give it look that it's made of metal sections. And the way it appears to be made of metal with the electricity powering it being visible is always a fun design choice. Its stomach area seems like to me that it's glass or some other clear material with again that electricity powering it. I also love the tail. It's so sparkly and pretty and it's got a lil lightning bolt on the end! Also i just checked it's name! Miraidon! Which of course first reminds me of the Japanese word Mirai which translates to future. This seems to fit very well with it's futuristic design! And the -don on the end just seems to invoke the idea of a dinosaur or dragon to me. Which given its reptilian appearance makes sense.

And for the scarlet one, i'm not really sure where to start. It seems to have a lot of details on it.

I do like the crest on its head a lot. The feathers? and long tendrils? seem fun and flow-y. I also really like its eye color, the piercing gold color is very fun. The spines running down its back also seem to make sense. I like the triangular pattern on its tail and the diamond shape on its arms. The webbed feet? I'm a little confused? Does he need to swim? Is it based on a real animal i'm not aware of? The feather looking bits on the top of the tail/bottom of the back also confuse me. They look a little awkward. But my two least favorite bits of the design would have to be the weird tentacle things on the shoulders and the thing on its chest. The tentacle things look shiny in a way the rest of the body doesn't and it seems to not mesh well with the rest of the design. As for the thing on its chest it lowkey looks like half a tire got hot glued to him. However, i just noticed the little swirly white design on its chest and i really like those. But back to the chest thing, both designs seem to have this on it and i'm wondering if it's based on an animal or mythological creature i'm not familiar with. Its name is Koraidon! while this doesn't stick out to me in any way other than the -don at the end again pointing towards them being especially close to each other lore wise. I will check if Korai means anything tho. Well apparently it's the plural of Kore which means "an archaic Greek statue of a young woman, standing and clothed in long loose robes." It can also mean early, untimely, or precocious in Hungarian. The definition of early would make the most since given its traditional/prehistoric look. But i'm not sure why one wuld have its name rooted in Japanese and the other in Hungarian unless its just the fact that mirai and korai sound similar.

Now, here's a question i have: why do they look so similar? Now i mean we know sets of legendaries can look similar and they often do. Obviously they are meant to relate to each other in some way just from the way pokemon games work. But what is that relation? Well very obviously they have almost the exact same shape. Just one looks more natural and the other looks more man made. I wonder if that goes back to the different factions having different ways of doing things. Is the more natural one the original legendary pokemon who looks over the area and the man made looking one actually made by the other faction in an attempt to achieve the same results? I mean, the series is no stranger to artificially created or edited pokemon.

Ok, this thing

It's clearly the electric mouse or "pikachu clone" for this generation. It's name is Pawmii and i think while it's cute it doesn't stand out in any way compared to the rest of the electric rodents. I do like its little face and chonky legs tho.

Lechonk! Fist up, I have to mention the name. It's perfect. Next, the design. It seems to be just a fairly general pig. Not my favorite pig design we have but i do love his nose and round body. His cartoon-ish proportions make for such a fun and silly look.

I feel this little quirk of his is almost definitely based on irl pigs hunting for truffles. I also think this would make Lechonk a wonderful addition to any team meant for a chef character.

Now, This little thing

It is absolutely adorable! and i can't wait to see it's evolution. I love seeing what grass pokemon evolve into because so often they are based on a seed or sprout and it can be hard to tell what they will turn into. That being said, dose anyone know if Smoliv seems to be based on a particular seed or sprout? Also, can we talk about that name? First we had one with chonk in the name, now we have one with smol as well. And just look at it. It IS smol.

Well that also seems like it could be a clue towards what plant it's based on! It honestly looks a little like an olive to me just in color and shape, but i've never had olive oil plain?? So i can't really verify if it's bitter. Ah, I just realized its name is a play on olive. I must have been too excited to notice!

OK now the non pokemon designs! The professors are very obviously still continuing the theme of tradition vs technology.

I mean just look at them. Also excuse me for a second but, AAAAAAA TWO PROFESSORS??? T W O? *ahem* I'm fine now.

First up the Scarlet one. I gotta say, i LOVE her hair and her whole look. She looks epic as heck. Ok just checked, her name is Sada, which just seems to roll off the tongue so well. Her outfit doesn't stand out as amazing to me to me but it also isn't bad either. I like her belt, necklace, and hair accessories. But other that that she seems pretty ok to me. I also like her mismatched bracelets. Her face and posture seem to indicate she is more outgoing, confident, and openly happy. I also adore her coat, like yes it's a lab coat which seems so modern and technological and against her design but the little details on it make it work so well.

Next the Violet professor, His outfit feels kind of lacking to me. I've never been a big fan of the futuristic skin tight suit thing and that's pretty much all he has going on. :/ I do like his coat tho. Also his name is Turo apparently. Which the first time i read it my brain autofilled it as Turrón. I like the name Turo less than Sada but i guess it isn't horrible. Just not my tastes. His stance and facial expressions seem to imply he will be more reserved, cold, and not express emotions in as open or extreme of a manner as Sada.

I love that while they both have lab coats on, they're personalized, the fur and tooth or stone clasps on hers and the triangular shaped buttons and more blocky shape to the coat are very fun. I also like that neither of them are exactly white in the art. They are tinged orange and purple respectively. That's less of a design and more of an art thing but i adore when ppl don't use actual white, it adds so much more color and vibe to the picture.

Ok, well that seems intriguing. So it's not exactly that they have different approaches to things as a tradition/new thing. If both things are lore "passed down" then it seems like both tradition and technology were passed down? Or i guess it could be that they both have the same lore they are working on it's just how they choose to use it that changes things, that would then continue my previous train of thought.

Now!! It seems like we've had our rival revealed!

And! Her name is Nemona! Which seems very pretty to me! It also seems like her outfit is different depending on what version of the game you are in. I wonder if she will be a childhood friend who goes to the same school as you or if she's a rival from the other one? I also notice all her accessories that aren't part of her uniform seem to have their own style to them. Her glove, over the shoulder bag, and shoes are all black white and red with a distinct style to them. That makes it seem like that is more her style and if she were to pick her own outfit it would be more in that style. Which i think is great! As a character in a uniform it's important we can see her own style shine through! It may be even pointing towards her having an original outfit later on. I also love her freckles, they're so cute! Her eyes are a wonderful shade of amber and i like her hair and skin color. However, if her design has one negative for me it's the green in her hair. I love dyed hair don't get me wrong but the green with her accessories just reminds me of the stereotypical christmas colors. I've never really preferred green and red together and my personal distaste for christmas really makes it worse. But i'm pretty sure that's just a personal bias affecting it.

So! She's a friend! This may mean she will be in the same school as the player. Or it could be that they are friends despite being in different schools. It also mentions her being an experienced trainer and she looks visibly older than the protagonist. This could place her as an upperclassman helping the player. She can also be seen saying "Are you these three's Trainer?"

This implies she doesn't even know the players team at the beginning of the game. It could be that's when you first meet her or it's just that she's known the player for a while and since you get your first pokemon as of the start of the game she isn't aware of what your pokemon is yet.

Soooo, i know this probably isn't new info, but i haven't been on there before as i haven't been that interested until this trailer came out. I find this very interesting. Especially the phrase "you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story" This is interesting because even though Legends Arceus seemed a lot more open then a standard pokemon game, i definitely wouldn't describe it as open world. You are still stuck in specific areas until you complete a certain part in the story and the constant need to travel back to town to move anywhere else is slightly inconveniencing. But this seems to imply that you can wander anywhere and at any time with no limits from story progression. That is just, perfect. It's pretty much exactly what i've been dreaming of since i was a kid. Just a chance to exist in the pokemon world and run around doing what i want. I also really hope they keep the side quests and minigames from Arceus. I'd love to be able to wander around populated towns and talk to people helping them in different ways. Perhaps even being able to do minigames at establishments in exchange for some money? I know i'm probably getting ahead of myself but man i've just got so many thoughts running through my head.

Anyway, last thoughts. This games looks like it's shaping up to be really fun! I'll probably do another post like this breaking down more of the trailer but for now let's wrap things up. I love the open world feel to it. What I'm really hoping for is the cities to behave just like the wilder areas in some aspects. I'd love to be able to catch pokemon like trubbish, pidove and other pokemon that seem like they would live in cities there!! And of course that leaves me with one final idea. IMAGINE A GEN V REMAKE WITH MECHANICS LIKE THAT!!! :D Unova was based on the USA so seeing the big cities in it full with pokemon everywhere inhabiting it would be SO!! Much!!! Fun!!

Small Note for anyone who actually read this far!: I've only ever played 3 mainline games and i've only ever beaten one! So if something i said doesn't make sense that may be why. I'm also WAY too excited to think correctly so uh... apologies if i'm being stupid. hmm. i struggle a lot doing like full pieces like paying attention to composition and doing shading n stuff.. thats Hard its a once in a blue moon kind of thing for me. i dont Dislike them i just dont want to draw them 95% of the time. i probably just have to practice more.

also, ref sheets and i know this bcuz i have been recently doing those for art fight. ITS NOT THAT I HATE THEM... I LOVE THE END RESULT ITS JUST. A PAIN. i used to rly enjoy doing ref sheets id draw them all the time for fun idk how. tho tbh in some ways drawing them traditionally WAS easier, more used to holding a pen that way ig yknow

Nico was my fave when reading the original series as well! Though I did end up latching onto Leo more when HoO came out, I still always have a soft spot for Nico.

Funny you say that about Jamil, I just saw some super awful takes abt him recently (again) that just made me feel like people are reading a completely different story, though part of that can be blamed on how the EN translation changed some stuff that kind of completely change the context of his situation.. honestly, given what you wrote abt Annabeth I think Jamil would also fit in Athena cabin - he's smart, capable, cunning and a strategist, plus he already has the gray eyes. He'd likely be the head of the cabin too.

I agree! Lots of people have pointed out there's a lack of Leo & Nico interaction in canon despite their similarities and I think that's such a shame, while I don't ship it romantically I really wish there could've been a friendship between them. I wish there was more emphasis on platonic relationships in general in HoO, so many things could've been explored further but we didn't get to :(

Me too! I'm usually reluctant to share my thoughts in case anyone reads it and thinks "there's no way you actually think that/that's stupid", but I'm really glad I can share with you and chat about ideas because it's so nice hearing what someone else thinks. Along with that I have made PJO OCs that I have been faaar too shy about showing people, but I they're precious to me and maybe I will post them one day...

Leo just using latest shows as bg noise would fit so well and be so funny lol, he'll know a few things here and there about whatever's going on but be completely wrong about some things that die-hard fans get mad at and give him a long lecture about the series that he barely retains because he didn't expect it. tumblr is such an inconsistent, buggy mess it's ridiculous sometimes. recently i discovered that i had blocked someone whose url i recognized but who i didn't ever remember blocking and don't know why i would've, so i unblocked them immediately but i was just like?? how did that even happen?? could've been a mistake on my part but i also wouldn't be surprised if it was a glitch 😭

i latched on so hard to nico as a kid because i was an edgy emo kid who really related to him ADKJGHDK. so of course as an edgy emo bisexual teenager i started loving him even more when house of hades came out. but like i said before, leo is easily my favorite of all the new characters from HoO! i have some criticisms of HoO as a whole but i like leo so much that i used to want to be a hephaestus kid mainly so he'd be my brother (and before that, i wanted to be a hades kid for reasons that are probably pretty obvious LOL).

oof, yeah, i do play twst EN and... okay, i was going to go off on a whole tangent here about jamil and kalim and how the localization watered down their entire fascinatingly tragic dynamic but it got so long that i realized it could practically be its own post. so i removed it and expanded it into its own post. it's here if you'd like to read it, but tl;dr is i agree with you completely lol. jamil is one of the most misunderstood and mischaracterized boys in the fandom and i think the changes EN made definitely have something to do with that, which frustrates me immensely because outside of certain choices made with both scarabia and pomefiore i tend to really enjoy the localization. the way they translate idia's dialogue is comedic gold.

anyway, though, i was also thinking athena might make sense for him! and i know i previously said riddle could be head counselor of the athena cabin, but i can totally see it for jamil too. although, i wonder, how would it affect things if kalim was also present at CHB? would jamil still need to keep his head down, make sure not to outdo him at anything, and reject any sort of position of authority so kalim wouldn't look bad? would he give the head counselor position to someone else (not kalim, i don't think they'd be in the same cabin) if it was offered to him? which reminds me, another idea i had is that i think it could be interesting if jamil was the son of a minor god while kalim was the son of an olympian, possibly giving jamil even more reason to resent him. or it could even be the other way around (say kalim's parent is a minor god and jamil's is an olympian, so jamil is more powerful than kalim but has to act like he isn't) too.

personally i do think romantic leo/nico is cute and it's a ship that i have a lot of nostalgia for since i read a ton of fics for it way back in the day lol, but i'm not shipping them in this twst AU! i'm a multishipper who loves nico and will together too and i really just wish leo and nico had gotten to be friends in canon. i strongly agree with you that HoO should've focused more on platonic relationships, and i actually basically said all of this recently in a post here!

HMMM oh man, i'm nowhere near as creative as i wish i was when it comes to fashion because i'm bad at visualizing how things go together lol. but my first thought is that nico canonically insists on wearing his worn out old aviator jacket everywhere up until it literally gets torn to shreds. and then in TOA he buys a black leather bomber jacket and starts wearing that everywhere instead. so i think he'd insist on wearing his bomber jacket over his school uniform like idia does with his hoodie! he'd wear a black shirt instead of a white one, like vil does, and i could see him wearing the vest but i don't think he'd bother with the tie, blazer, or gloves. he'd also wear black converse and maybe he could add some more of his Emo Kid flair by wearing a cool studded belt or attaching chains to his pants or something, i think that'd be fun.

for leo, i would love to hear if you have a different idea than what i say because i'm not as sure about how i think he dresses! but i get the vibe that his main consideration is comfort and how well he'll be able to work in something, like he doesn't necessarily dress badly but he's very casual and doesn't wanna put a ton of time or thought into his clothing. so i could see him maybe wearing the gloves and blazer, but not bothering to put on the vest or tie or button his shirt up at the top, and just grabbing a pair of work boots for shoes.

hey R! :) as usual, this got away from me, so i'm putting most of this under the cut.

📙 What’s your favorite genre to read, and do you have any recommendations within that genre?

the gothic, babey!! 18th- and 19th-century gothic novels in particular. i love their atmospheric settings, their eeirness, their uncaniness, their exploration of the psyche, their tendency towards "doubling" and parallels between the Self and the Other, and (especially, but not exclusively, in the 1890s imperial gothic) their engagement with contemporary fears and prejudices. a couple of my favourites would be:

the castle of otranto (horace walpole): the first gothic in english literature (published in 1764)!! set in the middle ages, it's fast-paced, it's intense (a character gets horrifically maimed about five pages in), it's (trying very hard to be) shakesperian, it's very funny at times. there is plenty of uncaniness and a fascinating framing device where the author pretends to have found the manuscript of the story somewhere and translated it from the italian. that has so many narratological implications, and i am here for it <3

frankenstein (mary shelley): the (gothic) novel of all time. it's got everything you'd possibly want from a book. arctic exploration. romantic theory of child development & education. science. body-snatching. taking a nap after creating your son out of corpses. sublime descriptions of nature and natural phenomena. a main character who is soooooo trans, but you don't know in what way. gothic doubling, so so much doubling!! seeing your own reflection, your own Self, in the Other (rejecting those parts of yourself before others see them). biblical parallels. much more paradise lost that you'd think. grief and rage and desperation. deeply fascinating narratological structure. i could go on and on but that's the thing about frankenstein. it is open to so many different interpretations and once you read it, you can't stop thinking about it.

the lifted veil (george eliot): this one is predicated on an absolutely fascinating concept. i won't say much, as i don't want it give it away, but the narrative cycles back to the beginning at its end, with an absolutely chilling effect. there are some very fun references to frankenstein in there. it's george eliot, so of course there's masterful psychological portrayals involved. the main character is utterly pathetic and i am here for it. a supernatural situation presented realistically, with very well thought-out consequences.

the island of doctor moreau (h.g. wells): this one is a 'scientific romance' ('romance' in the older sense of 'adventure story'), as wells put it himself, but it decidedly has that eerie, unsettling gothic atmosphere. the horrors of science, and vivsection (an extremely controversial practice, even at the time it was written) are at its core :) it's peppered with interrogation of what 'humanity' actually is, or should be, and interacts with contemporary science in some interesting ways, but mostly it's just a well-paced, entertaining adventure, with a very believable protagonist.

i could go on and on, really, so i'll stop (almost) here. some of my other favourites are, of course: jane eyre, wuthering heights, the beetle (this one is a mess, and yet i can't help loving it), the hound of the baskervilles (which began life as the draft of a typically gothic novel, and evolved into a sherlock holmes story!!) and, of course, dracula <3 honorary mention to other classic gothics which i didn't enjoy reading quite as much (mainly for stylistic reasons), but which contain some great ideas and/or characters: the picture of dorian gray, carmilla (i also read 'green tea' from the same short story cycle/collection and uh. it sure is A Story.), and the strange case of dr jekyll and mr hyde.

2. 📚 Do you have a go-to reading spot or do you read everywhere?

i do much of my reading on the bus while i commute (if it is not overwhelmingly noisy). otherwise, i try to make the most of any setting. i tend to bring at least one book with me wherever i go, even when the chances of actually sitting down to read are slim. i think one of the nicest places would be the public gardens (when i'm bothered to walk all the way over), and theoretically the seaside, but i always get distracted somehow when i'm at the latter. i also enjoy reading in the attic, as it's, y'know, the quietest part of the house.

No... But I'll go more depth and ramble if you'd like me to privately... But for now, let's say the meaning is special to me. My favorite line, the second line of the chorus, "give me what you are"

Made me think of you. The whole song is in my interpretation about wanting to and seeing another wholly for who they are, every crevice and all, good and bad, as well as experiencing things they've yet to experience... and for some reason, I came to think of you. Whether it's because I feel you're willing to learn and know me that well, or whether I want to learn and know you that well doesn't matter, I just know it's encapsulating whatever I feel around you. The first line "give me your heart, your hand and the rest" makes me think of a silly scene at the finale of a slice of life romance movie; you and I running in some lavander field while we take each other's hands with some newfound child-like determination to go explore and experience anything that crosses the plane we travel. Its cheesy but kinda cute? Bonus? Make it a little kitty and a dog being confused as hell as they run into this beautiful field ready to take on the vast world, it's unknown horrors and beauties~!

Fun fact about me as promised is that I enjoy romanticizing or dramatacising things. Mainly where it's appropriate to do such and in doses... But I think life is to be lived as if it's art and even if it isn't... Why would I not take up a harmless challenge to experience everything to the fullest as if I am the yn character. Basking in moments that make me feel most connected to other souls due to simply being human and experiencing things... Think you can handle this wannabe* theater kid?

My turn! Let’s see, a fun fact about me... I think the most prominent one would be that I’m a total hopeless romantic. I’m a sucker for all things love and romance no matter if it’s grand gestures or small details, even down to the cheesiest or most cliche things. I believe in things like fate and destiny and soulmates because I feel like love is simply beautiful enough to make all those make sense. And I think because of this I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve, I don’t hesitate to express how I feel as long as it’s not at the cost of anyone’s comfort, and when the time is right, I always make my intentions clearly known if I’m interested in getting to know someone in a more than friendly way.
