Certainly! I'm more than happy to oblige.

First though I'm gonna need to tldr: the history of Y Ddraig Goch before we get onto the (accidentally) canonically trans part.

A brief history of Y Ddraig Goch:

(The modern Welsh flag)

Y Ddraig Goch first appears in the tales of the Mabinogi (Charlotte Guest version) in the tale of Lludd and Llefelys where it is fighting a white dragon. The fight is also described/expanded upon in the c. 829 AD text Historia Brittonum (attributed to Nennius) - where the red dragon represents Wales and the white dragon represents the Anglo-Saxons. In the story the red dragon triumphs over the white. Of course, Geoffrey of Monmouth also covers the story c. 1136 in Historia Regnum Brittaniae in which he introduces the concept of the red dragon heralding the arrival of King Arthur.

Geoffrey of Monmouth claims Arthur used a banner featuring a golden dragon. But we also know the accuracy of Monmouth can be questionable at times. Owain Glyndŵr did use a banner with a golden dragon called Y Ddraig Aur - raised in 1401 at Caernarfon - Glyndŵr chose this banner as a nod to the supposed banner of Arthur and his father.

Later on the Tudor monarchs (being a Welsh family) adopted a red dragon on a white and green background in their heraldry. Eventually Y Ddraig Goch on a white and green background became the official badge of Wales in 1800. The design became the official flag of Wales in 1959.

Now for the thing you're all here for -

So, as outlined, the history of the dragon as a national symbol of Wales goes back a long way. If we're just talking post-1959, there's some interesting implications for Y Ddraig Goch's depiction.

This is what the Welsh flag (and Y Ddraig Goch) looked like in 1959 when it was officially adopted as the flag of Wales. It looks broadly the same as the first flag and has some common features - such as not having a penis (or, as in the correct heraldic terminology - a pizzle). Meanwhile, in the arms of the Tudors (specifically Henry VII)

the penis is almost always included. So much to the point that the present royal family still includes the penis. While pretty much 0 depictions of the dragon in Wales include a penis. So you could interpret this as the dragon is seen as male only by the British royal family and as female everywhere else (which kinda implies that at some point the Tudor dragon had an mtf transition in Wales and she keeps getting misgendered by the royal family every time she is depicted in (mostly) England).

So much to the point that in 1995 this pound coin was made by the Royal Mint featuring the pizzle on the dragon with all four feet touching the ground as opposed to standing up (passant rather than rampant).

But in Wales you'd be hard pressed to see a pizzled dragon anywhere. Ergo, we can only conclude Y Ddraig Goch is trans and she transitioned in Wales and keeps getting misgendered in England.

[note: This is mostly tongue in cheek - but I do think it's fun to extrapolate that the Welsh dragon is trans because of the differences in depiction between Wales and England. Like many things Welsh, it is misrepresented by England and the idea of the Welsh dragon being misgendered only in England is, I think, a good metaphor for a whole lot of English treatment of Wales.]

Unrelatedly, there is a gay Welsh flag held at the National Museum of Wales which has a very wonky dragon which I find very endearing.

~ Completely unrelatedly ~ never forget the time someone was trying to homophobic to me by suggesting that I was disrespecting all the soldiers who died 'for the Welsh flag' by making it rainbow colours and not red - arguing that any change of colour of the dragon was disrespectful. Reader, my bus pass at the time for Mid Wales Travel had a purple dragon on it.

Watched Nimona today and I'm absolutely losing my shit

Anyways one of the things that hit me super hard was just. The idea that. That people will only ever see you one way, that nobody will ever change the way they perceive you. But then Nimona points out to Bal that he changed the way he saw her, didn't he? And that just. Most people won't change the way they perceive you. Because they're too stuck in their bigotry, or because they don't really care about you that much, because they never really cared that much to begin with. Those people aren't worth your time. They aren't worth flipping out over. The people who do bother to change because they really care are the people you need to hold onto.

I'm very very closeted, but I've been really thinking about this because I'm surrounded by friends and family who I know are too stuck in their bigotry to change for me. They'd never accept me as anything but a girl. But well, those people don't matter. Not as much as the friends I have online who were immediately willing and happy to change up their pronouns for me. And I even stress about strangers, about strangers who might find out my gender is nonconventional and judge me for it, or strangers who assume I'm a woman and refuse to listen when I correct them. But realistically, they don't matter to me. They never did. I can't change the way people perceive me. I'll never be able to. But I can hold onto the people who care about me enough to change on their own. Those are the people who matter.

Also I just wanted to say I desperately want to emulate Nimona's attitude in this movie. The way she brushes off all of Ballister's questions about her origins with just "I'm Nimona." That's the attitude I strive for. I don't have to answer strangers trying to ask me "why/how are you nonbinary? What does that even mean? What's between your legs? Did you get the surgery?" I don't have to answer any of it. I'm me. I'm here. You can accept my name and pronouns or not, your choice. I don't care, and I don't owe you an explanation.

Sorry just...this movie touched me in a lot of ways, and I was struggling a lot this past week trying to force myself to be a girl, and I decided to watch this movie at the perfect time, and I've really gotten renewed vigor as a transgender individual and I'm trying to take heart and take pride in who I am again. I needed this movie a lot.

just watched this movie with my grandma and Oh My God I need more people to see it, this is genuinely amazing. I can't even describe it I'm at a loss for words. Ik it's supposed to be a comedy and probably has some problematic stuff because of the time period, but there's some shit in here that makes me go "Holy fuck they did that???" and also Marilyn Monroe my beloved, you're doing amazing sweetie.

Just. Two guys initially dressing up in drag to evade mobsters, but then one of them starts to really enjoy it???? And ends up falling in love with a millionaire??????? One guy does typical goofy straight shit and then his buddy is just busy dancing the tango with a guy he met at the hotel lounge and gleefully announcing their engagement the following night????? AND THEN WHEN THE BUDDY TRIES TO DISCOURAGE THE MILLIONAIRE FROM MARRYING HIM (WHILE USING HIM AS A GETAWAY DRIVER BTW) THE GUY JUST COUNTERS HIM ON???? EVERYTHING?????

This Wyvern asks goes out to a group I usually butt heads with, that being trans activists, and trans identified people themselves, however I genuinely want to know your takes on it. As with all wyvern asks if you aren’t comfortable sharing via reblog, my anon asks are open. If you submit an ask with a visible username I’ll message before posting to verify whether that was intentional or not, as I don’t want anyone receiving unnecessary backlash for simply answering a question from a mean ol’ radfem.

Detransitioners, you are more than welcome to answer as well.

Detransitioning, I believe we can all agree, is understudied. There aren’t really many studies on it to help socially or medically. To try and learn more about it, I try to read posts under the detrans tag, and other associated tags.

Under these tags are posts about wanting to be misgendered and forced into detransing as a kink. Usually I see this from transmen. Their blogs are covered with those types of posts. So my questions are as follows:

Do you believe these blogs are legitimate? Why or why not?

If you are kink critical, what kind of impact do you think this type of kink will have on the trans and detrans communities?

If you do not consider yourself kink critical, is this an exception for you?

Do you view this as fetishization? Or a legitimate kink?

If you yourself are trans, does this come off at a form of “chasing” (for lack of a better word)?

What is your opinion of someone who is willing to oblige this kink?

I know this is meant to be ocs directly in the community, not the allied ocs, but he is dating OV, a nonbinary person, and is so very gay for them so he counts and it feels wrong to leave him out. His powers are growing and controlling Venus fly traps and Snapdragons, two carnivorous plants and as you can probably tell he is a villain, however after meeting OV, depending on the AU he tends to lean towards the good side, sometimes being a police officer, or a regular civilian, only bringing out old habits when needed, and don't let the expression fool you, he is a total softie and such a bottom when it comes to his partner, as you can see he's the one stealing/wearing his partner's oversized hoodies.

i actually really love how samantha shannon is handling trans/nonbinary characters in her roots of chaos world. they blend seamlessly into her world building, so much so that i don't always notice there's something different. non binary noble? they sure as fuck don't want to be called lord or lady! they are styled 'lade'.

someone uses they/them pronouns? cool! we're not going to waste time going through an explaining that. it's just instant, all our characters refer to the person's preferred pronouns without any second thought.

she really keeps saying, yeah? this story has dragons and witches and wyverns. and it's gonna be queernorm too. don't like it? well fuck off.

Steddie Soulmate Mark AU Prompt(w/ trans Eddie)

I want one of those soulmate AUs where people have like moving animal tattoos to represent their other half. They start off as baby animals and grow as their soulmate grows. And their tattoos are able to move onto their soulmates skin through touch and thats why shaking hands is important to tell if the animal will go onto the others skin.

And Steve is born and he thinks he has this little black snake that is his soulmate. Its cute and loves to dance along his shoulders and curl around his neck like a necklace. His parents tell him that snakes mean his soulmate is gonna be a little ruthless, a little cold blooded, but a lot determined.

As he reaches puberty though the snake unfurls and low and behold is actually a little wyvern dragon that has kept its wings and legs curled tight to its body through adolescence. It's horns start to grow into a beautiful curled crown on its head and it's scales remain all black except on the underside of its wings where there are spatterings of white, pink, and blue scales that look like stars against the dark.

But mythical creature marks come with a lot of superstitious belief like his soulmate will be crazy or a murderer or something along those lines. That his soulmate just isn't right.

His parents are pissed when they see it, and tell him he is better off without his soulmate because people represented by fantasy creatures are just going to be trouble for him.

And so Steve sleeps around and becomes a king among teenagers but he still secretly loves his little dragon. Knows his soulmate is beautiful and majestic and ignores when anyone jeers at him that he has a some crazy girl out there waiting for him in an asylum.

His dragon likes to show off and be seen, no matter how much he gets teased for having it, and will splay out on his chest with wings spread to preen any time he has his shirt off. The dragon likes to puff fire and smoke out whenever his soulmate is angry, and will curl around his heart when his soulmate is sad. Steve loves his dragon and even though they have a bad reputation, the other kids love it because its different.

When he learns monsters are very much real, he thinks that if someone is really bad then their mark would surely be a demagorgon. Ugly and vile and terrifying. It solidifies in his mind that his dragon can't possibly be what all the books say.

He thinks for sure Nancy has to be his dragon. She's fiery, determined, beautiful. She's not and the little bird she has won't go onto his skin and his dragon wants nothing to do with Nancy in turn. He is disappointed but falls in love with her all the same. His heart still gets broken when she tells him its all bullshit.

He thinks Robin too might be his dragon. She's smart, funny, playful. But then Russians drug them and she's sure as hell not into men when she shows him her own mark which is very clearly a female lion. He gets a Best friend and she tells him that she thinks his dragon is beautiful and so the person it belongs to has a beautiful soul.

But then Steve gets to thinking, because he's never seen someone with an animal so clearly the same gender as they are like Robin and her lioness. Hes only ever known people around him with the opposite like Carol and her male peacock for Tommy. He doesn't even know how to tell if his dragon is a boy or a girl and that confuses him more because he never even thought to look at boys and try to imagine them as his dragon. Wonders if maybe he should start.

Then In a boathouse scared for his life and with a bottle pressed against his throat, his beautiful dragon curls around his neck and then slides so easily across his skin onto Eddie Munsons hand.

Turns out his dragon doesn't mean anything bad or awful, it just means Eddie wasn't really born in the right body but his soul is represented just the way it was supposed to be. Magical and loud and beautiful.

Steve's soul animal could be whatever but I always figured he would be like a golden retriever. Because I mean. Look at that boy. And Eddie would be so confused that he got just such an ordinary animal because there's no way he would ever end up with a golden retriever boyfriend right?
