Top 3 cutest baby monsters and why
This is such a a cute ask, especially for the mood I'm in 😭
👇🏽
1. Naga- because they are little wriggly noodles! Little chonky noodles with chubby cheeks 😍 While they are a little further along than human babies when they are born, they have to learn to stand up on their tails, so until they get the core strength and coordination, they scoot around like little caterpillars. They also have to learn how to pick things up with their tails, so they love a playpen filled with balls or soft toys. They are shy babies, instinctually aware that they are helpless. They are comfortable with their close family, but don't particularly like strangers or extended family members who get in their face. It takes some time to develop their venom but they will bite you with their baby fangs if you frighten them.
2. Werebears- because they look like little cubs before their bodies fill out. They like playing in the grass or climbing small boulders from only a few months old. They are outgoing, curious, and surprisingly quick for those little legs. They are more likely to engage a stranger and want to be doing whatever their parents happen to be doing. They love their siblings and are friendly with other little ones, but they don't always know their own strength. Parents have to carefully supervise them so they don't get in over their heads.
3. Mothpeople- because they are little voids with big red eyes peeking out from their baby down. They are more shy as babies and tend to cling to their mothers. They like the dark, so before they can control their emotions, bright lights, even regular home lights, will send them into a crying fit. They also don't like being left with strangers and will fluff up their wings and hide until you earn their trust. You will most likely find them playing quiet games that they make up or sharing their baby babble with imaginary friends. There's no science on it, but imaginary friends are so common among mothbabies that the legend is they can speak with spirits. Most mothpeople don't remember their baby friend, however.
Bonus! I think Gorgons would make cute babies. Especially since most babies aren't entirely aware of what limbs go where and what they do, so a gorgon born with snakes for hair would have to be swaddled up in a very specific way so they don't fuss. While they won't turn their immediate family members to stone, gorgon babies that end up in public are generally blind folded with something soft until they have control over opening and closing their eyes. When they grow up, they can swap that out for sunglasses. Adolescent Gorgons LOVE experimenting with different colors and frames. While being blindfolded sounds a little sad, gorgon babies sharpen their other senses through this period of their life. They like music and the voices of people. If one was on your lap, they would want to press their head against you to listen to your heartbeat. They also like to be cuddled and to explore their world with their chubby little hands, so you need to stock lots of sensory toys and activities.

Hares, as you may already know if you've been following my better half @broncoburro or @forevergoldgame (if you're following neither, you're missing huge amounts of context for the setting!), are nothing like the hares of the real world. They are massive leporids from Northern Vestur and one of the few meurian animals remaining after a historic event known as the Great Hunt where humans wiped out most of the planet's remaining meurian species in order to harvest their meur for relics about 350~ish years ago. They are obligate carnivores and known to hunt humans when the opportunity arises.
The baku is a large, lumbering omnivore with a similar ecological niche somewhere between a panda and a regular bear. They're a rare species, endemic to a single far-flung region of the world, having only just barely escaped extinction. See, while the Great Hunt was headed and funded by the Tri-Kingdom, its reach spanned the entire known world - but the further from Vestur it travelled, the less discriminatory the hunts became. The local peoples who were paid to hunt on the Tri-Kingdom's behalf had little idea of what meur was and what meurian animals were actually useful, leading to mass to mass culling of "useless" meur-touched animals like the baku, whose unusual sleep-inducing abilities cannot be wielded by humans. Regardless of their uselessness, the damage had been done to the species, and only the mundane offshoot survives - though rumors persist about meurian baku.
Sphinxes are scavengers that can be found across the deserts and savannas of the mainland. Unlike their meurian cousin, the manticore, they never evolved meurian flame breath, and their 'stinger' is no more than a vestigial sickle buried beneath the fur of their flowing tails. Instead, they specialized further into human mimicry, using their ability to copy human speech to hunt domesticated animals, naive children, and drunkards.
Now you might be thinking: "why would a teenage girl want to own any of these as pets? None of these sound like animals that should be pets." Well, first off: you'd be hard pressed to find a young girl that doesn't want a wolf or a tiger as a pet, that's just how they are, c'mon.
Second, there are three primary reasons Rhea thinks this is a more realistic idea than it is:
Tumblr media
Exotic "pet" owners among the upper class: While exotic pet ownership isn't big in Vestur as a whole, it has a notable presence among the Southern upper class, both noble and common. Rhea is the duchess of the Southern Kingdom so she is well aware of every instance of somebody paying excessive amounts of guilder to import something they shouldn't and stick it in their courtyard. As I've mentioned before, this is a sin Ancha is guilty of, having gotten swept up in a past "teacup baku" craze/scam some 4 decades ago. Unlike her peers, however, she kept her baku, Fig, even after he outgrew his alleged "adult size" of 1'9" at the withers. Others culled theirs once they became large enough to cause mass property damage. Ancha knows Fig is a massive, terrifying wild animal and does not recommend anyone repeat her mistake, but being raised in captivity he cannot be returned to the wild and so she's committed to caring for him for as long of his estimated 70~ish year lifespan that she's here for.
Haretouched Northerners: The "haretouched" is a strange phenomenon that exists in the North. Now, we haven't posted a formal explanation of what exactly being haretouched means yet - I'll save that explanation for Dan to write at a later date. In the meantime, to very briefly summarize what it means: occasionally, a hare will bond with a specific human. Those who have bonded to a hare are said to be "haretouched" - or more bluntly, cursed. The haretouched are treated as pariahs by broader society, though they are begrudgingly tolerated in the North itself and destigmatized by Northern nomad clans. While Northern nobility has done its best to keep the haretouched out of their bloodlines (save for the Lord of the Nomads, who is seldom acknolwedged, much less counted), occasionally a fluke will occur regardless and you end up with someone like Quincy or Lamonte. Rhea, of course, is just a Southern bystander who thinks the idea of having a murder-bunny for a friend would kick ass.
Captive beasts performing in circuses: Self-explanatory. Sphinxes especially are a popular choice for exploitative entertainment because of their mimicry abilities, and are often trained to have "conversations" or "sing."

Monster Lore Tidbits
Gryphon moms often "bully" their chicks the toughen them up and prepare them for when they leave the nest. Ace received a myriad of bullying from both his mom and his older brother. Things like stealing food, kicking him out of comfier spots in the nest, and lots of rough housing. None of which is ever malicious and both ease off when noticing Ace getting overwhelmed or truly upset by their efforts. Ace, now at NRC, displays similar behaviors with Yuu, often stealing her food, teasing her and bugging her to get a reaction, and other such things. Only to soften up and apologize when Yuu started to get truly upset with him.
While Driders can be loners more often than not, there are groups of Driders that can from in a communal fashion. These communities will consist of many nests in a large underground area complete with things like a a food storage area for the whole community and even a communal nursery for extra protection of fertile egg sacks and slings. Hunting parties are formed to grab up food quicker and bring in more food for everyone. Rook was born into a community and started hunting with the hunting parties shortly after he was too big and too old to need the nursery's protection. This was actually a good thing as "communal" driders are more socialized and can be more friendly than driders that live on their own. This is one of the main reasons why Rook is so friendly and is perfectly fine sharing a dorm with other monsters.
In a way, phoenixes are immortal. When a phoenix dies, their body turns into a large pile of ashes. Within a couple of days, they will rise again as a chick from their ashes. This new chick is a new life. They will not remember much if anything from their previous life and even if they do, it's small flashes of broken fragments of what used to be. When Ortho passed, Idia had originally left his ashes where they lay, believing if he moved them then it would interfere and make it harder for Ortho to form again. This had been an awful decision as a storm had come through and swept away most of Ortho's ashes into the waters surrounding the Isles of Woe. Idia was devastated. Without his ashes, Ortho would never come back. Idia gathered up what little he could salvage into a small vile. This vile is actually build into Ortho's body. There's tales of those with psionic powers being able to read a phoenix's memories from their ashes so Idia wanted to see if Ortho's algorithm and enhancements could do the same.
Winter Elves live a nomadic life. Unlike Spring Elves who only move homes every year or two years to make a new area flourish or Summer and Autumn Elves who hunker down where they choose to stay for years at a time, Winter Elves only stay in one place for days and maybe months before moving along to a new place. Silver's original family had to stay a month in the outskirts of Briar Valley as Silver's mother was going to give birth to Silver any day then. Silver was only 2 weeks old when he was robbed of his family. That little lean-to they lived in wasn't built to last and with Briar Valley still deep in yet another war, it became a causality. Lilia still wonders if this was some sort of turn of fate. If he hadn't gone to survey the damage, Silver would have laid there in the rubble and starved to death or became easy prey for some heartless predator. A lot of students are surprised to see a Winter Elf in their school. Usually the ever nomadic Winter Elves teach their children themselves rather than stay long enough to send them to schools.

got any dragon!ghost and werewolf!soap headcanons? for fic research purposes, of course
I have very particular lore for dragons and werewolves (lycanthrope in general) so I don't know if you'll use them for your fic but I'll leave that up to you
___
A run down of my lore:
Dragons are incredibly powerful magic users. They use their magic to shapeshift into a mortal form (usually a human-like form but not always). Unlike any human magic users, dragons don't need a power source or a conductor (like a wand) to perform spells. There are two groups of dragons, the Mun and the Arcane.
The Mun are your classic giant, flying lizards while the Arcane are not what you would look at and immediately recognize them as a dragon. The Mun are are more adept in physical combat and destructive magic while the Arcane are more adept in spellwork (though they can be just as devastating in a fight like a Mun).
The Mun are the ones most commonly interacting with non dragons, going out into the mortal world. The Arcane are rarely seen out of their kingdom among floating islands and mountains in their home realm.
_
Lycan come in many shapes and forms. The gift of lycanthropy can be hereditary or given to someone through a short ritual (the lycan has the person drink their blood). Some bloodlines result in stronger lycan. The families in these bloodlines tend to be very proud of their heritage and big on staying true to one form. Wolf lycan with wolf lycan, bear lycan with bear lycan and so on.
Hybrids are possible and do exist. They're usually outcasts from lycan that share a true form. Anyone gifted lycanthropy from a hybrid are said to have unstable forms but no one really knows if that's true.
The matter of changing during a full moon is very real. All lycan are forced into their beastly forms during this time but this is not the only time they can change their forms. Lycan from long bloodlines have adept control of changing their forms while lycan outside of these bloodlines may not be able to change their forms as frequently as they would like.
(Lycan are not very strong magic users and are capable of doing basic spells with the aid of a conductor but outside of that they're not much good)
___
Ghost, like all dragons, is very adept in magic. Due to his mortal form being near identical to an average human, Ghost is able to hide amongst humans as a magic user rather than a dragon. Due to Ghost never changing into his true form, no one knows what he looks like. He can easily have two lives, one as a man and one as a dragon, and no one knows. Ghost doesn't really have a life outside of 141 due to dragons not being very welcomed into society. This has lead to him contemplating returning to his home realm (which he has almost done several times).
(I like the idea of him as a Arcane but Mun works too)
Soap is a lycan and is loud and proud about it. He's very in control of changing his form whenever (his mohawk stays when he changes) and uses that ability when on missions. He has a pack instinct and bonds with the members of his team and becomes very protective over them. After joining 141, Soap found himself lonely because those he pack bonded with aren't with him. After taking out Hassan, Soap bonds with Ghost, making him a part of his new pack.
(Personally, I like the idea of Soap not being a 'true form' lycan but either someone from a short bloodline, a hybrid, or someone who was changed into one)

They’re holding you closer as they lead you further and further into the wood~ and you can’t help but to fallow after them with a growing smile of your own~
After all..

Do they know..
That You walked into Their Woods on purpose?
Day after day, strolling in without the slightest scent of fear~
Do They know you sang that little song Just to get their attention??
Maybe..
Maybe..
Maybe, that’s why they picked you~

Vampire Fact #12 - How to Identify a Vampire
I’m back with another vampire fact! In fact, all folklore facts are now back, so expect to see more of these!
The winner of the last vampire fact’s Patreon poll was “how to identify a vampire” (that was a hot minute ago because I had to take a break from these), very much like my previous werewolf fact on how to identify a werewolf.
Tumblr media
I won’t be covering pop culture vampires in detail/providing a list of how to identify vampires in pop culture. I’m not so deeply versed in vampire pop culture as I am werewolf pop culture; I only study vampire folklore, not their modern media, unlike with werewolves. I familiar with some of it, for sure, but I’d never pretend to be any kind of expert on broader vampire pop culture.
Please note the following is not to be considered a 100% complete list, as there are many, many vampire legends out there! This is just several of the more “popular” methods of identification and perhaps some of the better-known.
Some Folklore Vampire Identifiers
Pale - There are some stories in which vampires actually are pale in folklore, and in which being particularly pale might be a sign of vampirism.
Reddish or purplish skin - Conversely, vampires can also be identified - especially in Eastern European regions - by having “reddish” or “purplish” skin and perhaps even a swollen appearance. All of this comes from drinking too much blood. It’s basically the opposite of being pale: they look flushed and reddened instead of pallid. This one was not uncommon.
Red eyes - This didn’t always mean red eyes as in red irises, like in a lot of popular culture. Often, it could also mean similarly to the flushed appearance: it meant bloodshot eyes, eyes full of blood. But some might also be interpreted as having red irises, and let’s face it, red irises are very cool.
Unnaturally beautiful - This one isn’t uncommon in legends, either: unnatural beauty. Vampires in many stories seduced their victims, and it wasn’t too unusual for things to get steamy, either. Again with the conversely, though...
Unnaturally hideous - Vampires can also be unnaturally hideous. We’re talking like really nasty, because they’re monsters - often these are the monster vampires, demons, not vampires that were ever actually human. However, sometimes signs of being a vampire could also be just human traits that are considered hideous, such as having a caul, being exceptionally hairy (judgmental much?), etc.
Only comes out at night - This is an obvious one in both popular culture and folklore. Often in folklore, however, vampires also only came out at night because it was the only time they actually left their graves. Vampires didn’t come out only at night because they were burned by the sun in folklore (they actually weren’t!), but because they were nocturnal.
Signs of undeath in coffin - Often, vampires were identified via actually unearthing the coffin and taking a look at the corpse. There were many signs that might show a corpse was actually leaving the grave as a vampire, such as growth of the hair or fingernails, the eyes being open or partially open, blood around the mouth, reddened eyes, or a swollen reddish or purplish appearance, as if the corpse is engorged with blood.
Well, there’s a few, at least! There are so many vampire legends I won’t cover “all” of them until, you know, I write the Vampire Facts book someday (maybe? Werewolf Facts the book is definitely on the way, though). At any rate, be sure to tell all your friends how to find vampires today by reblogging this post!
Oh, and no, fangs are not included in folklore.
Also, if you are curious about vampire weaknesses, be sure to check out my post on that, too, as well as the vampire masterlist (linked at the bottom of this post)!
Until next time!

Hello, this has probably been a question in the past and it can be kinda gross to think about but
Do you guys think vampires can take shits?
Given their diets, my theory is that they have a system that is mostly urine but depending on the blood (and what said blood might have added) it can be similar to birds where their waste is both things.
I know it's a bit gross but I've been wondering because I obessed a little too hard on dietary habits on dinosaurs and then went right up into vampire obsession. So, the question happened in the mix up.
Anyways, vote now and reblog for a bigger sample size! I'd love to hear opinions!
