If anyone - like me - wanted to read the short story published in New Voyages 2 by Nichelle Nichols, I've managed to find it and the whole book is viewable here on openlibrary.
I also just spent some time making it into a PDF, but can't figure out how to attach a file to a post, if you can at all - let me know in the comments!

For Trektober Day 25: Shuttlecraft. This is the first chapter of a Uhura x Scotty multi-chap fic.
Summary:
Scotty and Uhura were sent out on a scouting mission in one of the shuttlecrafts. It was a simple mission. Nyota was there to open up communication with the locals, and Scotty was to get her there and back. Too bad easy missions never remain uncomplicated.
Preview of story:
Uhura clutches her hands around the edge of the shuttlecraft’s navigation controls. Scotty was leaning all the way over the helm control, knees pressed against the metal protectors along the bottom of them, face contorted in pain and determination in his eyes. Despite the speed at which they were crashing through the atmosphere Uhura doesn’t panic. She forces her eyes back onto the computer’s screen. There’s no need to be scared. They won’t die. Scotty’s the best engineer in the whole fleet, and she’s had to take over the navigation console often enough that she can find them a place to crash. She slides her fingers along the buttons and controls. Land. They’d need dry land, preferably an open field.
The force of their descent pulls water from her eyes. Quickly, Uhura blinks the tears away. They were quickly flying over a desert. Her heart races frantically. A struggle to forage for food is the last thing they’d need. Uhura quickly plots in a random location code for somewhere about two hundred kilometers ahead of them.
“Our engines are gone! We’re running on momentum alone at this point!” Scotty announces as he pushes himself further back into his chair. He pulls back his foot and launches it into the metal protection plates under the console. “Stay where you are lass!”
It’s more of a plea than an order.
That realization drops her stomach all the way into the soles of her feet. Uhura braces herself for the crash as the new coordinates lock-in. The scans read sporadic trees and shrubbery. It’s at least a better chance. “Can we give ourselves a boost?”

I wrote another silly little Spirk fic. (https://archiveofourown.org/works/53251780)
And… and someone read it. And they drew a fanart… of that fic. Of… my silly little words?! That I wrote at 3AM. Someone… someone took time form their day… to draw a picture of my silly little words! :’)

Reminders for new ao3 users (in no particular order):
- filter your searches like you would on a library website or in an online catalogue
- don’t post placeholders, fic searches, or recommendations as fics. DON’T! It’s against ao3 TOS
- there is no algorithm. ao3 sorts by date posted/updated unless you filter with specific search criteria
- ao3 is a non profit. that means it doesn’t sell ads to make money — it only survives on donations. this is why it can show you so many fics without ever flashing an ad or pop up at you!
- report fics that break TOS when you see them (I.e., placeholder fics, searches) to help other users navigate better
- the tag “dead dove, do not eat” doesn’t equate to gore/awfulness automatically. it is a complementary tag that enhances current tags. E.g., if the fic is tagged “gore” and “dead dove, do not eat” the author really wants you to mind the gore tag
- most fandoms have a variation of “no beta, we die like (x character)” and they all link back to the “No beta” tag
- publishing a new fic sometimes means it won’t show up in the fandom/pairing tag for a few minutes
- subscribers receive update emails at different times, depending on when you update/publish your fic. there’s no good way to predict when an e-mail will be sent — it can be in 30 seconds, or two hours later
- some fics are restricted by authors to those with ao3 accounts only. if you see a blue lock in the upper right corner, that fic is only visible to logged in ao3 users
- you can block commenters now! this didn’t use to be a thing
- updating a fic just to stay at the top of the pairing tag/fandom tag is a dick move. unless you’re legitimately editing or adding chapters, this just annoys readers and fellow authors, and people will skip over your fic

I'm genuinely disappointed about Ao3 turning off guest comments. It's a necessity at this point from how many spam bots/AI bots there are, and people who plain up harass authors, but it's so fucked up that it has to happen, and honestly so sad because some of my favorite comments EVER are from guest commenters. And I hate that me leaving my works unlocked potentially opens me up to getting my work copied by AI, or my comments spammed with fucking porn GIFs which was apparently a thing that was happening. It's just honestly sad that we can't even have one good thing anymore without AI and shitty people ruining it.

I still remember the day I first watched Star Trek and I thought, "Wow, Kirk and Spock would make a really good couple, I wonder if there's anyone who ships them," and then I looked up 'Kirk and Spock' on the Internet and the first thing that came up was the fucking Wikipedia article about the history of slash fiction and that it was Kirk and Spock who invented modern fandom.

One of the things I love most about Star Trek is that is goes on forever. You like a character? Beyond the episodes, there's more than likely at least dozen novels about them. Not enough? Have a ton of comic books where they go on even more adventures. Still need more? Here's a thousand fanfics. Here's a background graphic from an episode seen for 0.2 of a second detailing their education and qualifications. Horny for them? There's art for that, fic for that and maybe even naughty photos of the actor. Starships your thing? Here's a technical manual explaining how things work, and a set detailed floorplans. Want more? Here are books on the histories of the pretend starships, with endless variant designs and backstory for their creation. Still not enough? Walk around the ship on the laptop or computer as if you're there. You like the aliens? Here's a novel detailing their backstory. Here's a pretend travel guide to their planet. Still not enough? Here's an old Star Trek book with details about their anatomy. Still want more? Here's a fan diagram of the alien's penis.

still cannot believe Star Trek canonically made an episode where the plot was ‘Spock goes into heat and is going to die unless he has sex but then he rolls around on the ground with Kirk and pins him down and chokes him and after that he’s fine".
Also this episode establishes that touching and sharing thoughts is so intimate that it is used to seal an arranged marriage pact...in the same episode where in an earlier scene Kirk just casually grabs Spock’s hand and Spock seems cool with it.
Oh. And ALSO. After Spock has explained to Kirk that he is in heat and needs to have sex or die he’s all “Captain, there is a thing that happens to Vulcans at this time. Almost an insanity, which you would no doubt find distasteful." And Kirk’s response is to kind of raise an eyebrow and say “Will I?” in a way that suggests very much the opposite.
I just. This show was something else huh. No wonder it manifested modern fandom and fanfiction culture.

if captain kirk irresponsible? why huge baby cow eyes???
if captain kirk bad captain? why-
you thought i was gonna talk about his voluptuous titties fat ass sparkling personality and unflinching moral character ? no.
if you say kirk is a bad captain i will kill you. I will shoot you into space like they did to bill shatty when he wouldn’t shut tf up about going to space
except unlike bill shatty ill send you up naked and defenceless into the vast chasm of space your lungs will explode and your eyes will fall out or some shit (i saw that in a doctor who episode)
kirk drift is getting out of hand and my response to this is ending all kirk drifters and repopulating the earth with kirklophiles such as myself and my dad paul.

Do not complain to me about how hard it is to navigate ao3 on mobile, young one. I hid under the bleachers and read Spirk fanfics on a BlackBerry during gym class. We are not the same.

I wrote this for Trektober 2023 Day 24: Cuddling for warmth.
Summary:
Sulu is trying to keep Chekov cheered up and warm as they await rescue on a frozen planet in the middle of a blizzard.
Preview of story:
Sulu looks down as he sits. “Freezing on a planet while awaiting rescue,” Sulu explains with a cheeky smile. His unsteady hands tear open the emergency bag. Despite the struggles, Sulu can still smile and seem rather unbothered by it all. How could he be so calm? Chekov starts to rock in place. “First time?”
“Yes?” Chekov answers the question with another. How often does one find themselves in this situation?
Sulu pulls out one of their emergency blankets. They were thick, red, cotton coverings on the inside, with a tin-foil-like substance on the exterior to help keep the elements and temperature out. Sulu wraps one end of the blanket around his right shoulder, stretching it behind his back. Then holds the extra end out on his left arm towards Chekov. “Come here.”
The younger man hesitates as he stares at Hikaru. Sulu wags the blanket in his hands. With a huff, Chekov rolls his eyes. He clenches his fist before pressing his knuckles into the ground and sliding himself closer to the senior helmsman. As Chekov’s shoulders bump against Sulu’s arm, the other man wraps the blanket around him. Pavel takes the corner of the blanket from Hikaru’s hand. Sulu pulls his side of the blanket over his own shoulder further.
Huddling together like this really was warmer. At least for their backs. The cold that had been seeping in through his collar slowly ebbs away. Yet his fingers and toes were still aching. How much longer must they wait? Captain Kirk had promised to be back in minutes. Long before the snowstorm blew in. Now an hour later, the blizzard was truly setting in. The thought sends shivers wracking through Chekov’s body. His teeth clink and clash against each other. Even clenching them wasn’t enough to stop the shaking.

On a mission gone wrong, Sulu is accidentally ejected into the dead of space. In the moments that follow Chekov must deal both with the situation as well as his as of yet unspoken feelings. Will he now ever get the chance?

Comments versus Bookmarks on AO3
A few people seemed appreciative of my post about how to use AO3's Marked for Later feature, so I thought I'd follow up with another tip about comments versus bookmarks. As part of the amazing @justleaveacommentfest I noticed a few people mentioned leaving nice comments in bookmarks, and I thought it might help to have a little info about how comments are different from bookmarks, and why it's better to send a comment if you want to make an author happy or make fandom friends or have an interesting discussion.
Bookmarks *are* viewable by everyone, unless you make them private. If you plan to say anything negative in your bookmark, please make it private. It's not really the flip side, however, that leaving positive statements in your bookmarks will reach the author, though.
Most authors are alerted when they get new comments, either through their dashboard or via email if they choose, or both. Yay! Serotonin boost, and also the ability to reply back and start a conversation! Plus, readers can have great discussions with each *other* in the comments section of a fic! If you're super into a fic you can read comments on the chapter even years later, and sometimes find the author adding additional thoughts or discussing their thought process while writing! It's like DVD extras for fanfic! (Do kids these days know what DVD extras are any more? Damned if I know).
You don't really know, as an author, when someone bookmarks one of your fics. Some authors, particularly when they are feeling low (cough cough) may also look at bookmarks to see if there are nice things there. This would basically just involve clicking on the bookmarks for each of your fics individually to see if there's anything a.) new and b.) nice in them.
This is an act of desperation. It's not really a wise thing to do, as 99% of bookmarks have no comments, or just list the title and author in fear of the fic being deleted some day and not knowing what you're missing. Even worse, if you, as an author, get desperate enough to cruise your bookmarks, you are as likely to see someone say something like "Meh" or "This got boring so I stopped reading at Chapter 5" or "Too many werewolves 3/10" in a werewolf fic than you are to see a nice compliment.
So, if you loved a fic and want to memorialize your love in a bookmark, be an extra super-duper sweetheart and cut and paste that into a comment for the author! Make the AO3 environment enriching for both authors and fellow readers in the comments section, and protect your friendly local author by not providing intermittent positive reinforcement for the negative behavior of scrolling through bookmarks!
I still recommend bookmarking fics. Bookmark those favorite fics you want to come back and read later, or use bookmarks to leave yourself little reminders if they are nice or in private bookmarks if they are not nice. Bookmark good resources, like how to code things in html or how to use AO3 filters most effectively. Find awesome new things to read by looking through the bookmarks of your favorite authors, because if you vibe with someone's writing you may also vibe with their favorite fics to read!
